Amateur Footballer SEASON 2016

3 SEPTEMBER

If you get injured, what’s your game plan?

Injuries in footy are inevitable, but sitting around a waiting room or waiting weeks to see a specialist doesn’t have to be.

Take advantage of the same elite services used by professional footballers, and get back out on the park with your mates sooner.

Injured VAFA players now receive fast track priority treatment at Epworth Richmond, Victoria’s largest private hospital emergency department.

Erin Street, Richmond Open 24/7.

Epworth. Better.

In 2011, a fantastic secondment opportunity in America came up and while I was quietly petrified, I knew it would change my life. In just 5 months, I met an incredible range of people, and was really challenged professionally. I grew up more in that short time than in the 5 years prior – there’s no other situation where I could learn as much as I did so quickly. DOM MOLLUSO Audit Manager, William Buck

OLD MENTONIANS ON THE MOVE Three teams have already tasted the sweet success of winning second semi-finals and earning promotion to a higher section. That is what make this weekend of matches so important; five preliminary finals are being played, with the winners receiving promotion and the right to contest the grand final. Most of those who read of this column are well aware of the battles that occur throughout years of toil to get to this position. Old Mentonians were relegated from Premier C in 2002. For 14 years they have remained in Division 1, oscillating between finals appearances and avoiding relegation. They began the season in scintillating form and won each of their first four matches by over 100 points. They continued their winning ways until Round 7 where they lost the first of three in a row. They played Old Geelong on Saturday who had beaten them both times the two clubs had met throughout the home and away fixture. Except for the OGs supporters I don’t think anyone could begrudge them the win and promotion to Premier C. Westbourne Grammarians were the unlucky losers in the Division 4 finals last year when they finished second but suffered elimination in the first week of finals after the top side were also defeated. Due to this, we revamped our final six structure whereby the top two go straight to the cut throat preliminary final. Westbourne remain undefeated this season and have also gained promotion. St John’s return to Division 1 after four years in Division 2. They won the Division 2 premiership in 2011 but only lasted the one year in the higher section. Hopefully, this time around they are able to retain their players and build on their playing stocks to reach the Premier sections for the first time in their 26-year VAFA history. This weekend is the commencement of the finals for the three Premier Sections. The top four in Premier played each other with the Uni Blues displacing Old

Xavs in the top two giving them a double chance. They take on last year’s runners-up Old Trinity. There is a chance the two Melbourne University teams could play off in the William Buck Premier Grand Final. They would both need to win to keep this alive as it has never occurred in over 100 years since the two clubs separated. Old Scotch has regained their early season form but weren’t able to catch St Bedes/Mentone Tigers or Beaumaris. Monash Blues has had a terrific first year back in Premier B and thoroughly deserve their finals position. Congratulations also to former VAFA representative player and Monash coach, Paul Groves, on his appointment as the inaugural Western Bulldogs women’s coach. The two clubs relegated from Premier B last year, Mazenod and Caulfield Grammarians, will contest the Premier C second semi-final. I am sure there has been a lot of hard work done behind the scenes to put them back in line for promotion. Peninsula do battle with Old Ivanhoe at Box Hill City Oval. Two positions were advertised on vafa.com this past week. A part time role to commence immediately for the VAFA Women’s Club Development Officer. This role will initially be two days a week during the off-season, with the possibility of expansion when the season commences in 2017. Interest has also been generated in the naming rights of the new women’s competition. Expressions of interest has been requested for possible Board vacancies. The Board has nine elected positions and two Board appointments and it is anticipated that there will be some vacancies for the 2017 season. With the commencement of women’s football and the redevelopment of Sportscover Arena it is an exciting time to be involved with the VAFA. COVER: Peninsula Pirates do battle with Old Ivanhoe for the second time in two weeks.

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER

Nick Armistead

DOUBLE CHANCE DILEMMA AHEAD Finals were locked in. Relegation sorted. The only thing which could have changed in the last round of William Buck Premier football was the positioning of the four finals-bound teams with regards to the double chance. And don’t for a second think the double chance isn’t important. Of the past six Premier seasons, only Collegians has made the grand final after finishing outside the two (fourth in 2014). The Lions were unable to attain the ultimate prize that day, giving further emphasis to the importance of the fall back should one be unable to claim victory in the second semi-final. At the half way mark of both the Uni Derby and Toorak Park clash, one could have been forgiven for thinking the order of the four (OT, OX, Blues, Blacks) was not going to change. It looked as though the loser of the T’s and Xavs would be safe as the Blacks did a number on the Blues and led by 27 points with 12 scoring shots to five.

HOW WE WERE WRONG. While the Blues struggled to get their hands on the ball forward of centre with the majority of firsthalf play in the Blacks 50, momentum swung as Blues’ Will Cuningham, Marshall Rippon and Paul Nunn dominated possession. Closing the gap to 11 points at the last break, a Tom Quinn overthe-shoulder stunner gave the Blues the lead with five minutes remaining. Despite having a chance in the last 15 seconds, the Blacks were unable to capitalise as the Blues celebrated their return to second position on the ladder. Tom McKenzie, Clayton Hinkley and Cam Williams kicked two goals each for the Blues as they continue to outscore opponents in the absence of Tim Gaeppen. They’ll now play the T’s for the chance to progress straight to the grand final, while the Blacks will face Xavs in a do-or-die elimination final. Ultimately, Saturday was a disappointing day for Xavs. Not necessarily for the loss to the T’s but because of injuries to key personnel which seriously jeopardises their finals campaign. John Shaw, Ben Kennedy and Nick Serafini all failed to run out the match due to injuries suffered in 2

@NickArmistead gameplay. Kennedy and Serafini were both on ice prior to the main break, while Shaw hurt his hamstring in the second half. While the prognosis of both Kennedy and Serafini are currently unknown, Shaw is likely to be out until grand final weekend. Despite these injuries, Xavs took it up to the T’s until the final siren. Trailing by five points at the first break, Seb Nicolosi caught fire and sent home three majors in the first six minutes of the second term. They were irrepressible in that short burst and, had it not been for a knee knock which prematurely ended Nicolosi’s purple patch, they may have extended the winning margin. From there, the T’s were able to keep Xavs at an arm’s length with Andrew Kyriacopoulos and Gabe Hamilton finding plenty of it and Jack Osborn returning to his elite mid-season form. Ned Hunt remains a concern with an injured back putting a line through his past two weeks and Nicolosi will be monitored closely, but the T’s will now face the Blues for a shot at redemption. He may have been held goalless over the weekend, but Matt Handley officially took out the William Buck Premier goal kicking award for the second consecutive year. His 51 majors outperformed teammate Brendan Goss (47) and dynamic OMs and Blacks duo, Al Armstrong (41) and Lochy Dornauf (41). De La Salle, St Kevin’s and Collegians each concluded their 2016 campaigns on a high with Round 18 victories. With the conclusions of their respective seasons, there were a number of retirements from those three matches as Andrew (Scott), Steven (Salopek) and Leigh Harrison (DLS) bid farewell amongst a host of other VAFA stars. A comprehensive writeup on each retirement will be released later in the year, but I wanted to congratulate each player who has contributed so significantly to their club’s individual success. As for now, we set ourselves for two blockbuster semi-finals between the best four teams in the competition. The T’s have won both home and away matches against the Blues this season, including the Uni side’s only loss on home soil. Dig a little deeper and one will see those two wins have been decided by one and five points, respectively. Both sides have played against OMs on Sportscover Arena (venue TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD Old Trinity v University Blues Old Xaverians v University Blacks

of this weekend’s final) and both have recorded victories. The T’s are dangerous in short bursts and have proved they can win games on the back of dominant one or two quarter efforts. The Blues are defensive juggernauts and grind out victories by stifling their opponent’s scoring ability, averaging just 57 points against. They both have outstanding midfields, with the T’s run and carry in stark contrast to the Blues contested ball. Sunday’s elimination final will come down to the wire. No two ways about it. Historically, Xavs

play Sportscover Arena better than any other team in the competition and proved their love for the wide expanses of EP with a 61-point win against OMs in Round 12. Conversely, the Blacks lost at Sportscover earlier this year, but have the Cam Roberts and Bede Mahon-factor; two finalsproven stars who know how to get it done. From the outside, both game styles are similar with contested ball and retention of possession high on the agenda. Whatever you may have planned on Sunday that doesn’t involve VAFA football, cancel it.

PREMIER B

David Chalmers

NO SURPRISES HERE Congratulations to Beaumaris,

St Bede’s/Mentone, Old Scotch and Monash who are the four teams through to the 2016 Premier B finals. Round 18 didn’t produce too many surprises, with the higher ranked team taking the points in four of the five matches. The exception, of course, was Monash. They faced the biggest challenge of the round, taking on thenladder leaders St Bede’s/Mentone and needing to win to ensure a finals berth. They hung on in a fourpoint thriller, leaving Fitzroy out of the finals even though the Roys gave themselves every chance by notching a comfortable win over Parkdale. The Tigers loss also meant they gave up top spot, as Beaumaris ran away with a victory over Ajax. Dan Anthony (OB) and David Fayman (Ajax) finished level up the top of the league goal kicking with 46 goals. Stephen Milne (Beaumaris, 43), Nathan Smith (Hampton, 40) and Michael Barnes (St B/M, 39) rounded out the top five. Old Brighton Grammarians finished their season in style with a convincing 49-point win over Old Haileybury. After winning just two of their first ten games, the Tonners won seven of the last eight and ended up sixth. Dan Anthony and Tom Fisher were the stars for the Tonners and spearheaded a blistering second quarter which set up the win. The Bloods lifted and kicked six in the third but Fisher and Anthony replied with one each and the Tonners went into the last quarter leading by 28 points. The Tonners didn’t let up, and Michael Karayannis chipped in with three goals. After winning three of their first four, Old Haileybury finished a disappointing Premier B season by losing 13 of their last 14 games and will contest Premier C in 2017. Old Scotch consolidated third place and will enter the finals with confidence after posting a commanding 73-point win over the Hampton Rovers. The Cardinals took full advantage of the wind, posting eight goals in the second term and finishing the game off with nine goals. James Sansom had a day out with seven goals, while Sam Anderson finished with three. After losing five of six through the middle rounds, the Cardinals finished the season with three wins and are as good a chance as any of the other three contenders of returning to Premier section. Hampton will look to rebuild in Premier C. After trading places with St Bede’s/Mentone 4

@DAChalmers81 throughout the final rounds, Beaumaris found themselves back on top after defeating Ajax and watching the Tigers get pipped by the Blues. Ajax failed to take advantage of the wind in the first term, but still held a two point lead at quarter time. The Sharks then kicked four goals to none in the second term, setting up a handy half time lead. Ajax fought back in the third, winning the quarter and getting within 14 points at the last break. Brandon Joel got the underdogs off to the perfect start with the first goal of the final term. From there the Sharks took control of the game, with goals from Daniel Gribbin, Matthew Petering and two from Lachlan Boyd giving them a comfortable win and finishing off an impressive season. Fitzroy have had a much improved season, spending much of it in or just outside the top four. In the end the Roys destiny was outside their own hands, since even if they won against Parkdale they were relying on either Monash or Old Scotch losing. Daniel Bisetto kicked the opener for the Roys and Tim Boland replied soon after. Goals from Peter Baccanello, Corbin Stevic, Jack Dalton and Matthew Brown followed and the visitors had set up a handy lead. The Vultures fought back with the wind in the second term, holding the Roys scoreless, and only inaccuracy (4.7) prevented their eight-point lead from being greater. Fitzroy returned the favour in the third quarter, kicking four goals to none. Trailing by just 19 points and kicking with the wind in the last, the Vultures had an opportunity to throw a spanner in the works for Fitzroy’s finals aspirations. However the determined Roys were not to be denied, kicking three goals to two and taking away a 28-point win. It was a positive way to end the season in Rory Angiolella’s 150th game, but their joy soon turned to disappointment when they learned that Monash had upset the Tigers by four points, keeping their fourth spot and edging Fitzroy out. Match of the Round honours definitely went to the Tigers v Blues showdown at Brindisi St. Both teams had everything to play for. The Tigers wanted top spot on the ladder, while Monash were playing for a spot in September. Both sides had won four out of five going into the clash. Monash got off to a blistering start, racing to a 34-point lead on the back of a seven goal opening term. By half time it was all square as the Tigers fought back, but the Blues had the edge in the third term, crafting an eight-point lead and setting up a massive final quarter. Both teams combined for seven goals, six of which were kicked in the first 15 minutes. A set shot from Luke Velluto was countered by Nick THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016

Please email your match reports, thoughts and feelings by Sunday afternoon to dachalmers@gmail.com

Woodland, who kicked truly after cleverly roving a stoppage. Erish Uthayakumar was in the action with two goals in two minutes for the Tigers. A goal to Blue Liam Darcy was answered by the Tigers and Uthayakumar had another couple of chances to put the Blues away but was unsuccessful. Darcy kicked what turned out to be the last goal of the game 23 minutes into the quarter and from there both teams could just manage behinds. Lachlan Mirams had a kick inside 50 in the last few seconds but missed his target, allowing Monash to clear the ball and hold on for the win.

The race for the Premier B premiership is wide open and I believe all four teams are a genuine chance to take The Big One. The first week of the finals see Beaumaris and St Bede’s/Mentone square off to go straight through to the Grand Final, while the winner of Old Scotch and Monash will meet the loser of that game the following week in the Preliminary. My semi-final tips are St Bede’s/ Mentone and Old Scotch.

‘WHAT WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR’ The top four sides (Caulfield Grammarians, Mazenod, Peninsula, Old Ivanhoe) have all been well aware of their finals campaigns for a matter of weeks, using the recent games to prepare, taper and ensure their lists are fit for September action. But the relegation zone at the opposite end of the ladder, made for some exciting finishes to the home and away season, including a number of upsets in recent weeks. A standout performer for me has been Old Camberwell’s efforts in the back half of the year. After round 12, the Wellers had two wins to their name and looked a certainty of finishing in the relegation zone. But, to their credit, the Wellers won five of their last seven games; to finish in 6th position and well clear of relegation. Ormond and Oakleigh will be relegated to Division 1 as they both finished two wins behind Marcellin. Looking at the finals ahead, I think we are going to have the most intriguing September clashes across all grades. All four sides are more than capable of claiming the top prize. All four play significantly different styles of football, and hold keys to their finals success. Caulfield are a scorekeepers nightmare, often hitting the scoreboard from all angles playing a ruthlessly attacking brand of football. Mazenod have the ability to choker-hold oppositions attack with one of the best defensive lines in the competition, providing the ball manages to be pushed pass the Nodders outstanding midfield. Peninsula are the excitement machine, playing an all out attack style combining experienced heads with youth and flare. Old Ivanhoe – when they are on, they are ON! They play tough and physically intimidating football, beginning with their midfield. Dave Bruno and Carl Groth are the most difficult combination for opposition to stop in Premier C. Listed below are what I believe are the keys to each sides success during the finals race: Caulfield:

• They are the high scoring juggernauts of the competition. Accuracy is their key. If they can convert in front of goal, they have the ability to bury opposition. (have kicked 67 behinds in the 6

last four games). • Will Barker – a goal kicking midfielder who is in superb form, kicking 27 goals for the season. Arguably the in-form player at the business end of the season. Closely followed by Louis O’Keefe (51 goals) and Declan Reilly (28 goals from 13 games). Mazenod: • Defence: They aren’t a high scoring side, but have the ability to stop opposition in their tracks. The Pirates are the second highest scoring side in the comp but have been reduced to 65 & 50 points when confronted against the Nodders. • Mckeogh, Kovac & Cincotta – all kicked more than 25 goals for the season. Opposition can generally stop one, but all three? Peninsula: • Run and dare - They are an exciting side to watch. Their young brigade offer flare and pace through Moignard, Feldgen, Kellerman and Fletcher. The more they can play with dare and take the game on, the more challenging they will be. • Healthy list – They have the personnel, but only three players have played all 18 games this year. An injury free list is a must for the Pirates! Old Ivanhoe: • A Graders – An A grader is someone I consider in an elite category of Premier C and is more than capable of playing in William Buck Premier. Every side would love to have an A grader on their list. I believe the Hoes have at least four. Carl groth, Mal Mitris, Dave Bruno and Adrian Del Monte. If they fire, The Hoes won’t be stopped. • Round 18 form – The face a round 18 rematch, where they stopped The Pirates attack and outmuscled them to the final siren. Round 18 form will take them deep into September. TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD Caulfield v Mazenod Peninsula v Old Ivanhoe

The premier C ‘Team of The Year’ has been significantly difficult to assemble. A squad was initially selected combining 42 players names all worthy of selection. The squad was then reduced to 22 players based on their form in selected positions, coaches feedback (club and opposition coaches), times players were named in clubs best and my personal opinion. The Coach of the ‘Team Of The Year’ was awarded to Simon Williams. Simon took the reigns as Senior Coach after their 2015

season, when the club won only two games and was relegated. Since taking charge, Simon has led Caulfield to 15 victories and a minor premiership. Caulfield stated that, “One of the Club’s aspirations at the start of the season was to bring stability and a sense of ‘club’, and Simon’s contribution to both of these aspects cannot be underestimated. The players, and coaching panel have got right behind what Simon is seeking to create , and the results speak for themselves.”

14 YEARS IN THE MAKING

Congratulations to University Blues star, Pete Summers who had to leave during the middle of the game to make it for the arrival of his daughter, as tweeted below by the club.

Old Mentonians will be promoted at the end of the season to Premier C after spending 14 years in Division 1. A huge congratulations goes out to Old Mentonians for their success!

Every player dreams of kicking that match-winning goal during finals and the chance generally arrives each weekend for someone to stand up and be the hero as the games draw closer margins. Riley McDonald kicked truly to put Old Trinity in front of their Premier B Grand Final with less than two minutes remaining. But to make it even more special, it was his last kick in his last ever game.

Inspirational Fitzroy co-captain Rory Angiolella played his 150th senior game with the club against the Parkdale Vultures last Saturday. Rory, who was made captain of Fitzroy five seasons ago aged just 21, led the club to the Premier C grand final and into Premier B in his first season as captain. Rory has played all of his football with Fitzroy, starting with the junior club. Last year he had an outstanding season taking out the VAFA Premier B best and fairest, the GT Moore Medal. During the week coaches and team mates described Rory’s natural leadership qualities but also his unflinching toughness, competitiveness, loyalty and willingness to do anything for the jumper. That’s why the Fitzroy faithful love having him on their side. Congratulations Rory.

Nick McArdle followed his father John ‘Perc’ McArdle and brothers Matthew and Daniel to SKOB and where, as Captain of the Reserve side, he will play his 150th game in next weekend’s Semi-Final match. Nick is now in his eleventh continuous season at SKOB where he first played with the U19s back in 2006. He made his Senior debut in 2008 while still U19 and has gone on to play many outstanding Senior and Reserves games, including many Finals matches. Well done Nick, from all at SKOB

100

James Betlehem, now in his seventh continuous season at SKOBs, will reach the 100 game milestone in the Premier Thirds 2nd Semi-Final this coming weekend. James joined the Under 19s in 2010 where he played a total of 38 games and was appointed co-captain in 2011. James then moved to the Seniors where he has played mainly Reserves and Thirds football. James was a member of both the 2014 Premier C Thirds and 2015 Premier Thirds Premiership teams, undoubtedly the highlights of his time at SKOBs. We hope there are many more highlights still to come! Congratulations, James!

Congratulations to young gun Louis O’Keefe on achieving this milestone last week. Coming straight out of CGS into the seniors & to play a pivotal role in the 2011 “B” Premiership, Louis’s game has gone from strength to strength as a key forward. High marking & agility are the key to Louis game, as he causes many a head ache to opposition defenders . Well done “Bos”.

VAFA CONGRATULATES YOU IN REACHING THE MILESTONE

Andre Lister – After a prolonged absence & returning to the club in 2016 Andre has made an immediate impact in taking up the number 1 ruck role. Andre’s high leap & tap work is second to none & he has played an important role in our club’s resurgence this season.

James Anderson – A member of our 2015 U19 Premiership side, James has stepped up to take on a key defence role in our Reserves this season. James is rarely beaten down back, as he continues to work hard to develop his game. All at CGFC look forward to his continual improvement in the years to come. Matthew Nolan joined SKOBs from De La Salle in 2014 and has now played in two Premiership teams. He was a member of the Premier C Thirds team of 2014 and was in the Premiership Premier Thirds side of 2015. With the Premier Thirds Gold team playing in the 2nd Semi-Final this weekend, there’s a good chance that he could make it 3 Premierships in 3 years! Good luck, Matthew!

PANTHERS AND PEGS PROGRESS Old Mentonians are officially the first club promoted to Premier C this season after recording a stirring nine-point victory over Old Geelong at Sportscover Arena. In doing so the Panthers have booked their spot in the Grand Final and ended the VAFA’s longest current streak in one section after spending 14 years in Division 1. The Panthers trailed by 16 points at half time and then clawed it back to four points at the final break. Eventually, they managed to run over the Ogs in the last and clearly had more left in the tank going into the latter stages of the game. It was a great show of character by the Panthers, who had failed to knock over the Ogs in two previous attempts this season. Former Big V U/23 representative Dustan Mills was the star of the show with a dominant four-goal display, finding form at exactly the right time for Old Mentonians. Lewis Oliver and Comrey Edgeworth also played pivotal roles in the come from behind win. From the Ogs perspective, they now have to reset for a knockout preliminary final after losing grasp of a game they had control over. Tom Balcombe showed he is capable of stepping up on the big stage as he turned in a brilliant performance that featured two majors. Ryan Parsons was their only other multiple goal scorer and Sandon James continued his consistent form. PEGS now await the Ogs where a spot in Premier C and a grand final berth will be on the line.

and was the star in front of goal for PEGS, while Cam Livori and Ryan Jones had it on a string. Strong contributors were few and far between for Lions. However, Joel Costello capped off a great season with a strong game, as did Corey Bannister and Jarrod Bannister added two goals to his tally to finish on 75 goals for the year, a fantastic return from the premier key forward of the competition.

PEGS has handed out a lesson in finals footy after they stunned Therry Penola to the tune of 62-points. PEGS jumped the Lions with a four goal to one opening term and then proceeded to kick six goals to none in the second to take a 52-point lead at the main break, all but sowing up their spot in the preliminary final. Therry managed to be competitive in the second half but it was all too late as PEGS’ dominant first half was enough to ensure a resounding victory. The match left a sour taste in the mouths of Lions supporters who have enjoyed a mostly positive 2016 after being relegated from Premier C. Tylar Vujanic kicked five

Lastly, this week is an extra special edition of The Amateur Footballer as the various teams of year are unveiled. I was tasked with the enjoyable yet strenuous job of coming up with Division 1’s team of the year.

This Sunday at Bill Lawry Oval we are presented with a tantalising encounter between minor premiers Old Geelong and the in form PEGS. Old Geelong will feel confident following their 78-point demolition of PEGS in round 18, but as we all know finals footy is a completely different kettle of fish and anything could happen on Sunday in a game that is absolutely no certainty. Old Geelong has class all over the field, while PEGS rely heavily on their key forward and ruck stocks to provide most of the grunt work. This will be an enthralling clash. I’m going to play it safe and back the minor premiers to recapture their form and set up a grand final between the two most consistent sides of Division 1.

unfortunately some of the best forwards and midfielders couldn’t quite sneak into the side. As always there are going to be some players to miss out who are extremely unlucky. Special mentions must go out to Ben Ratcliffe (Therry Penola), Lachlan Ezard (Brunswick NOBSPC), Mitch Woods (St Mary’s Salesian), Hugh Mackay (Old Geelong), Brad Jones (PEGS), Adam Pattison (Old Paradians) and Michael Nitas (Whitefriars). Each player

selected truly deserves their spot. Congratulations! Also, well done to the coach of the TOTY, Luke Mahoney. When trying to pick a coach for this side, I wanted to select someone who portrayed the ability to inspire and get the absolute best out of his charges. Mahoney was certainly able to do this within the final six weeks of the season as he led his club outside the relegation zone.

PROMOTION ASSURED FOR ST JOHNS St Johns OC guaranteed a grand final berth and Division 1 football in 2017 as they defeated West Brunswick by 41 points at Trevor Barker Oval. Despite kicking a goal into the wind to start the match, St Johns OC were overpowered by West Brunswick as three Magpie goals saw the margin push out to 14 points at the first change. The West Brunswick momentum wouldn’t last as the midfield of the JOCs took over to kick four goals with the wind and only a contentious free kick and goal at the on the siren allowed the Magpies to only trail by seven points at half time. The wind remained strong in the second half, but unlike the first quarter, West Brunswick could not wrestle back midfield control. St Johns OC kicked 3.2 into the breeze as 1.5 for West Brunswick as it looked a tough task to overhaul the 16 point three quarter time. St Johns OC forward line that had been held in check the first three quarters finally showed their potency and West Brunswick had no answer in the five goal to one final quarter. The win for St Johns OC started from the backline as key backs John Ayama and Dylan Webb locked down the dangerous Magpie forward line and were rarely beaten and were named as the best two players. Aaron Thornton and Trent Edwards were both held in check for much of the game but added three goals each for the JOCs. The man who had held Aaron Thornton, Evan Lloyd was West Brunswick’s best with William Dylan kicking two goals as their only multiple goal kicker. Preston Bullants shook off a slow start and inaccuracy to end Yarra Valley OB season with

a 53-point victory at Whitefriars College Oval. There were ominous signs early from Preston as they controlled the first quarter in most assets of the game except on the scoreboard, kicking 0.7 to Yarra Valley’s 1.3 to trail by 2 points. The Bullants pattern of inaccuracy continued by adding five second quarter behinds, but added three goals to the Bushrangers one to turn the quarter time deficit into a 13-point lead. Needing to lift their scoring power after half time, Yarra Valley OB had their first multiple goal quarter adding two goals but conceded another 4.6 to trail by 30 points and have an uphill battle in the last quarter. The Bullants made sure that the game was outside of reach for the Bushrangers as they only allowed one goal and slammed on five goals for their own. Andre Marcon was the Bullants best alongside dominant full back Reed Jepson, as Jake Powell continued his goal kicking form with four goals. The Bushrangers leading goal kicker Jordan Canham was the only multiple goal kicker with two, with Ryan Pollard adding another battling performance for Yarra Valley OB. West Brunswick will play the Preston Bullants in next week’s preliminary final at Garvey Oval. The match up appears to be a very even one with the two fixtures between the two sides sitting at one win each. West Brunswick is the more rounded of the two sides known for their overall club depth, whereas Preston Bullants are very strong at the top end of their squad. It shapes up to be a very interesting Saturday afternoon in Bundoora. TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD West Brunswick v Preston Bullants

LA TROBE STEALS WIN ON LAST GASP GOAL; POWER HOUSE POWERS TO WIN A stellar couple of games were on the menu for the Semi-Finals of Division 3. A stirring come from behind win by Power House to announce their premiership candidacy. While La Trobe waited to the very last minute to break the hearts of the Swans and move onto the next round. Lets check out the games…

LA TROBE UNI DEF. STH MELBOURNE DIST In a game that went down to the final moments, La Trobe has emerged victorious and advanced to the Division 3 Preliminary finals with a 3-point victory against South Melbourne Districts, 78-75, at Westbourne School Ground. Predictions based on recent form quickly went out the window as the lately inconsistent South Melbourne produced one of their best performances of the year to take the fight right up to the red-hot La Trobe University pushing them to the brink. The renewed vigour almost worked as it took a last minute goal from Bryce Dowler to allow La Trobe to steal the win and move onto the next round. From the opening bounce La Trobe was made to work desperately scrapping and fighting for the ball, as South Melbourne took the early ascendancy dominating the opening quarter of action to take a 23-point lead into the first break. The second quarter however was a change in fortunes for the two clubs as the Trobers found something, adding four goals of their own while restricting the Swans to a lone goal reducing the deficit to only two points heading into the half-time break. After the main break the tussle continued as both teams continued to trade punches trying to gain the advantage as the game entered its second half, La Trobe wrestled away the lead during a third quarter where they were able to add three goals but the Swans failed to capitalise on the scoreboard lamenting wasted opportunities as they added only one goal from nine scoring shots, a fact that meant La Trobe held a narrow 3-point as the game headed towards its climax. In an exhilarating final term, South Melbourne were able to slow La Trobe’s ball movement and battle their way back into what they thought was an insurmountable lead of three points as the game entered its final moments but it proved too be enough time for Dowler to break the hearts of the travelling Swans fans and see La Trobe advance. Declan Ryan was influential for the Trobers wrestling their way back into the game 20

by finding the ball, kicking a goal and leading his team back into the contest. Ryan in his man of the match performance was supported all day by Elliot Kelly who again was spectacular in season 2016, something that has been quite common as he has been the Trobers best player all year long. For the Swans Blake Parkinson was the star with two goals and Jackson Consiglio was the best for a South Melbourne Districts outfit that will look to this performance to drive them towards greater success but they will have to wait until next season.

POWER HOUSE AFC DEF. UHS-VU AFC Power House has joined La Trobe in the Preliminary Finals as they stormed home with nine goals in the final half in a stirring come-from-behind effort to defeat a stunned UHS-VU by 18 points, 86-68, at Garvey Oval. Both teams showed early game nerves with neither club able to take control of the game. The deadlock with finally broken as Vultures’ spearhead Mitch Sweeney slotted the first goal of the game as Nick Devereux started to command the centre of the oval. While at the other end it took a superb solo effort from Darragh Leonard to get Power House their first goal on the board as scoring was hard to come by for the House in the early going. Adding to their woes UHS-VU jumped Power House from the opening bounce of the second term as they began to dominate the game. The Vultures showed flashes of their best in a dominant second quarter using their defensive pressure to stifle Power House from benefiting from the three-goal breeze. UHS-VU used the strong team effort in the second term to hold a 16-point lead heading into the main break. Power House stamped their authority on the game after the half-time break charged with the words of encouragement from head coach Ant Voyage still ringing in their ears, the House rammed home five goals in the premiership quarter to take the lead. Their tackling pressure was too much for UHS-VU as they began to lift around the stoppages and the UHS-VU counter attacks that they used to devastating effect in the opening half began to dry up frustrated the Vultures as heightened emotions saw tempers begin to flare between the two sides. The damage had been done as Power House continued to outwork their opponents in the final TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD West Brunswick v Preston Bullants

period as they added another four goals to run out the 18-point winners. In another performance that continues his scintillating form James Walsh stood above every player on the ground, lifting his side to the resounding win and establishing themselves as a true Premiership contender. Power House sharpshooter Nick Nagel maintained his stellar form recording five majors for the second straight week after kicking eight majors in Round 17. Nikolai Amourgis joined Devereux and Sweeney among the best for the Vultures who tripped up at the worst possible time of the year losing their last two games of the season after winning eight straight dating back to Round 10. Although it is another example of how form can swing in the heart of the VAFA as with the win Power House now extends their winning streak to seven straights games as they have found form at the best possible time of the year and pose problems for Hawthorn.

PRELIMINARY FINALS PREVIEW The field is reduced to four with two blockbusters as Preliminary finals to decide who will face-off on the last Saturday of the season. Power House take their red-hot form into a match up with the ferocious scoring Hawthorn, hoping to slow down the highest scoring team in the entire VAFA. Over the past seven games Power House has held teams to an average score of 66 points an impressive feat but this defensive pressure will face its biggest test against the Hawks whom averaged 141 points a game, a test that might be too much to overcome. Meanwhile in our other final, the Trobers will look to take the fight right up to the Saints. Back in Round 4 in their only match-up of the year, the final 30-point margin didn’t reflect Glen Eira’s dominance on the

WESTBOURNE V ?? The finals series have started with two scintillating matches last Saturday and there’s more in store. Westbourne continue to dominate the field and are the first team to earn the right to play off in the Grand Final. Point Cook played catch-up all day and despite a late rush simply ran out of time. Eley Park owned the match for 80% of the time but, it’s about who’s leading when the siren goes. This time it was Mt. Lilydale that shone through and as a result, the Sharks have bowed out. The stage is set for an awesome Prelim. But first, let’s check out the semis:

S/F 1: WESTBOURNE DEF POINT COOK The match between 1 vs. 2 kicked off with a fast start by Westbourne, kicking 4 goals to nil in the 1st and slowly increased that lead throughout the day. Point Cook squandered opportunities and some poor ball skills and turnovers led to a number of Westbourne goals. The scoring then stalled for 15-20 minutes with the Warriors on a safe 27 pt buffer which took them into the long break. It wasn’t until Westbourne had built the lead to 51, before we saw a couple of late goals to Point Cook in the last quarter. Point Cook were able to reduce the margin to 33 when the siren sounded. Although heavily tagged Jordan Lampi (4 goals) was one of Point Cooks best along with Robbie Milne who ran hard all day. For Westbourne, Dale Collins (1 goal) was well held but, the Doggies had no answer for Nick Schiano (4) and Chris Hudson (3). BOG was Adam Imber, who hadn’t had a BOG since April 30. The Warriors will be riding high but, there’s a weeks rest and just one more hurdle . . . . S/F 2: ELEY PARK DEF BY MT. LILYDALE When a game’s largest lead was 15, you know you have watched a tight contest. This match between the Sharks and the Rams was one for the ages. The Sharks started off well and led early with 2 first quarter goals to Paul Tempone (3 goals) in only his 5th game for the year. Andrew Zaicos of 22

Eley Park, also was busy early but missed a couple of opportunities to give Eley Park a greater lead. The match grew tighter throughout the day saw scoring become harder as the match went on. BOG was the Rams Daniel Dimitriou (3 goals), who was instrumental in controlling the middle and ensuring the Rams stayed in touch. Sharks, Jesiah Mc Garvie was dominant early playing off half back but, the Sharks disposal into the forward line lacked polish and the Rams were able to spread well, piercing the Sharks zone, led by Captain Sam Hickey (1). Also for the Rams, Max Hampton didn’t affect the scoreboard but, set up countless scoring opportunities from the middle and half forward. Mt. Lilydale were able to get the ascendancy early in the last qtr and led by 4pts with under a minute to go. Trent Sigalas took an absolute screamer for the Sharks, 30 out but, missed the shot to win the game as the bell rang. The Rams now face a hungry Point Cook, who want another crack at the Warriors.

PRELIM PREVIEW As Westbourne get the week off, our Prelims are now going to be at their ground. This Preliminary final between Point Cook and Mt. Lilydale, shapes up to be epic. After both sides have split their matches this year, anything is possible this week. When each side lost to their counterpart during the year, kicking straight was a bug-bear. Will this determine Saturday’s victor as well? Both coaches, Roger Hand and Ian Denny, should know each others game plan inside out and who can do the damage. Just had dot a few I’s and cross some T’s Whilst going into the game as favourites, Point Cook averaging averaging 115 pts a game and only 75 against the Rams, would be a concern THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016

but, as previously stated, kicking straight will alleviate this. The Doggies cannot afford to rely on mid-fielders this week to shoulder the scoring. William Dawson especially, needs to fire. Kicking 5 in the win and goal-less in the loss speaks for itself. Jordan Lampi, is another impact player from the mid-field that needs to fire who is without doubt, the most damaging to the scoreboard with 24 goals for the year. Other factors are down back where Mason Kip has controlled proceedings all year along with Robbie Milne. Both enjoy running forward and starting the wave forward. At the other end, Mt. Lilydale have have been building towards this moment for a few years now. Whilst there have been some up and down

performances, half their issue has been trying to keep their stars on the park, such as Captain Sam Hickey (11 games), Stephen Donald (30 goals in 8 games) and Ryan Gromadovski, who we haven’t seen since July. Their evergreen players who have been big for the Rams, playing every game, are key Mobile forward, Max Hampton (48 goals), early B&F favourite, Daniel Dimitriou (17 goals), Backman Dave Brambilla and Sean Gibson (24 goals). The Rams were my dark horse at the start of the year and it’s completely up to them. Good Luck to both sides. My tip . . . . . Point Cook Point Cook vs. Mt. Lilydale

GRILL’D RISING STAR 2016 LUKE GLOBAN — BEAUMARIS Luke is in his second year at Beaumaris having played at Sandringham Dragons in the U18 TAC Cup competition last year. He has carved a niche in the team with his hard work ethic and great defensive run. Luke is the type of player everyone wants to play with because he endeavours to maximise his ability and plays his heart out each week. Luke reminds the boys of Billy Hartung from Hawthorn and has a bright future ahead of him.

5 YEARS AGO – 2011 It was Collegians V St Bedes Mentone Tigers in the Premier A Section 2nd Semi Final. St Bedes has finished on top by 2 points after 18 rounds but in this game Collegians took an early lead and never looked like being headed in a powerful and polished display. Even though the Tigers kicked inaccurately Collegians always held the upper hand and won their way into the grand final 16.8 to 7.16. Best – Holst, Taft (4), Ries (3), Inglis, Dixon, Croft (Coll) and Anstey, Phibbs, Hellier, Shakaib, Collins, J Tyquin (StB). Old Xaverians won the 1st semi final easily from Uni Blues and only a 6 goal to 2 goal final quarter provided the Blues with a respectable score. The final score was 17.7 to 12.12. Best – Lynch, Handley (7), Goss, Wynne, Rogerson, Purss (Xavs) and Monteith, Hayes, Torney, Maddocks, Watts, Paterson (Blues). Caulfield Grammarians won the Premier B 2nd semi final defeating St Kevins 13.13 to 10.9. Caulfield came from being three goals down at three quarter time and it looked extremely dark for Caulfield when SKOBS kicked the first goal of the last quarter into the wind. Steve Lawrence, coach of Caulfield, had warned his young charges that the challenge would come and they responded magnificently led by Louis O’Keefe who kicked 4 goals in the last quarter as Caulfield stormed home winning 13.13 to 10.9 to reach A Section for the first time in many years. Best – Slonim, Shanahan, L O’Keefe (4), Perkins, Wood, Parsons (Caulfield) and Edgar, Keogh, Waldron, Marchesani, Murphy, Wissell (SKOBS). In the Premier B 1st semi final St Bernards overran Old Brighton despite being 3 goals down at half time. St Bernards kicked 12 goals to 4 after half time to cruise into the preliminary final the following week. Best – Pearson (5), Angel, Madden, Schroder, Gleeson, Stapleton (StB) and Dickerson, Marston, Dewar (4), Reilly, Mentiplay, Skewes (Old Brighton). Old Geelong’s Stevie Lansdell played his 200th game having joined the club in 2000. He had been a member of the 2005 premiership team. Steve became captain of the club in 2006 and had remained in this role for 5 years.

10 YEARS AGO – 2006 In A Section Old Haileybury qualified for the Grand Final in two weeks time after defeating Old Xaverians in the 2nd semi final, 15.10 to 11.9. The Haileyburians had come from behind being 4 goals down at quarter time, reducing the gap to 44

2 goals at half time and taking over in the second half. Best – Trollope, Mohammad, Langford-Jones, McLauchlan, Jenke, Mackenzie (OH) and Lynch, Ockleshaw, Hackett, Santalucia, Bingham, Lethlean (OX). Sacha Koffman and Mark Gibson were the central umpires. Uni Blues easily defeated Old Scotch in the 1st semi final 10.22 to 2.8. Best – Rankin, McConnell, Brookes, North, Gleeson, Solly (Blues) and Pugsley, Wigney, Widmer, Dick, Quail, Barton (Scotch). Russell Davidson and Grant Wardrop were the central umpires. In the C Section preliminary final St Bedes Mentone tigers won their way back into the grand final by defeating local rivals Parkdale Vultures 18.12 to 5.9. Best – Scafidi, M Wintle, Windebank, Collins (4), Hilton (3), Zakic (St Bedes) and Hecker (3), Stephens, P Sullivan, Tully, MacGeorge, S Sullivan (Parkdale). Rupertswood won the D1 Section preliminary final over Old Geelong 14.15 to 8.14 and were delighted to enter the grand final from fourth position at the end of the home and away season. It appeared Rupertswood were peaking at the right end of the season. Best – Phillips, Quigley (7), Sweeney, Bishop, Ata, Collins (Rup) and Bell, Gates, McCarthy, Legoe, Lansdell, Cox (OG). In the D2 Section preliminary final Peninsula Old Boys were too strong for Aquinas Old Collegians, 14.3 to 11.8 and had led from start to finish. Aquinas had done well to challenge for a spot in the grand final given they finished in 4th place after 18 rounds. Best – Murray, Coghlan, Bannister, Atchison, Murphy, Glenn ((Pen) and Evans, Toomey, Whitehead, Williams, J Jess, Den Braber (Aquinas). South Melbourne Districts won the D3 prelim final over Elsternwick 22.12 to 6.16, the match being all over by half time with a 9 goal lead. Best – Batchelor, Cheevers (5), Moojen, Ray, Hanna, Costello (SMD) and Culshaw (3), Mason, B Mahony, Yemm, Hodgkiss, C Mahony (Elst). In D4 Section, Power House were certainly the power on the day when they overran Eltham Old Collegians 13.17 to 5.9 in the preliminary final, Steve McCarthy and Robert O’Gorman being the field umpires in control. Best – Hill, cooper, Driessen, Boland, Miskelly, Sosic (PH) and Turner, Foo, Runco, Dummett, Thomas, Stockdale (Eltham). Old Mentonians congratulated Chris Dwyer on reaching 250 games. A former Reserves captain, Chris had won six best and fairests at his club during his journey.

20 YEARS AGO – 1996 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016

In C Section St Kilda South Caulfield disposed of Marcellin Old Collegians in the preliminary final, 21.17 to 11.10 and would play St Kevins’ Old Boys the following week. St Kilda South Caulfield failed to nominate their best players but Marcellin named Waters, O’Flynn, Bello, Gill, Collins, Theisz. St Leos Emmaus were too strong for Caulfield Grammarians in the D Section preliminary final, 12.11 to 6.3, St Leos defence completely shutting down Caulfield’s forward half. Best – Meehan (5), Douglas (3), Henricks, Shacklock, Vaughan, Pitcher (StLeos) and DiCrosta, Markovic, Williams, Whitmee, Cassidy, Harris (Caulfield). In E East Section, Aquinas’ Jason Livingstone was on 96 goals for the season but had the chance to reach ‘the ton’ the following week as his team easily won the preliminary final 18.14 to Old Carey’s 9.9. Best – Lambourne, Cultrera (5), Colliver, Morice, Phelan, Kerkhoven (Aquinas) and Auldist, Jackson, Hickey (4), Yarnall, Popplewell, McQuie (Old Carey).

30 YEARS AGO – 1986 Preston MBOB were defeated by Balaclava in the D Section preliminary final with the ‘Bala Boys’ in control from the opening bounce and winning 17.16 to 12.13. Best – McGrath, John Sist, Rosewarne, Rafferty, S withers, Patterson (Bala) and Meese, Kiervan, Ryles, McGowan, Brydson, Johnstone (Preston). Elsternwick won a trilling prelim final in E Section over State Bank, 12.16 to 12.6. Best – Bean, Thompson, Hill (4), Mahoney, Coldebella, (Elst) and Cloke, Matherson, Jenkins (8), Coghlan, Curtin, Goldsmith (State Bank). Uni High School Old Boys defeated Whitefriars Old Collegians in the F Section prelim final, 13.10 to 8.15. Best – Buckman, Gathercole, Clements, Zanin, Kufner, Ferguson (UHS) and Tierney, Hughes, Dunn, Huntley, Barclay, Coghlan (W/Friars). The G Section preliminary Final saw Monash Whites easy winners over Parkside 16.11 to 7.13. Best – Kotsanis, Farley (5), Brooker, Leech, Kavanagh, Ellery (Monash) and Graham, Ridd, Bastow (5), Clarke, McMurtry, Solerno (Monash). Paul Cox (Ormond) won the C R Newbury Medal for the Best Player in Under 19 Section 1. Mark Daffey (St Bernards) won the G W McTaggart Medal in Under 19 Section 2 and Mark Thackwray (Ivanhoe) won the I A Brown Medal in Under 19 Section 3.

40 YEARS AGO – 1976 It was a thriller in the A Section preliminary final after St Bernards burst out of the blocks with 6.10 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016

to De La Salle’s 2.2 in a display only marred by poor kicking for goal. De La fought back in the second quarter to lead narrowly and then held St Bernards in check to be only 12 points down and kicking with the wind in the last. St Bernards although still inaccurate in front of goals, went on to win the game by 2 points. Best – K Phelan, Nazdzieleski, Angel, Aughton, Mitchell, Drennan (St Bernards) and Lyons, Groves, Donegan, Power, Bothe, Wright (DLS).

50 YEARS AGO – 1966 In D Section, Old Geelong met Old Carey in the Grand Final and the game was played at a ‘cracking’ pace form the word go. After Old Carey hit the front at quarter time leading by 11 points, OGs responded in the second quarter with 5 goals to lead at half time. Geelong were better in the second half and won comfortably in the end, 13.5 to 7.11. Best – Sprague, Reid, Poolman, Lewisohn, Allden (4), A Balzey (OGS) and Seccombe, Fink, Constable, Murray, Marsden, Steele (Old Carey).

60 YEARS AGO – 1956 In the A Section 2nd semi final it was a real slog. The game was won in the first quarter when Ivanhoe kicked 2.7 to Old Melburnians no score. Although OM’s came back in the second quarter to be only 4 points down at half time, only 1 goal was scored after the main break and that was by OM’s. Ivanhoe kicked 1.10 after quarter time and held on to win an enthralling match by 4 points, 3.17 to 4.7. Ivanhoe were now through to the Grand Final and exactly 50 years on, 15th September 2006, ten of the surviving members of the grand final team met to celebrate the achievement at a dinner at the Heidelberg Golf club. The dinner was organized by Ian “Mick” Anderson and the MC was former, respected A Section scribe, Don Blackwood whose father Jack had been Secretary of Ivanhoe Amateur Football Club back in 1956. The ten members were – Lloyd Williams, Russell Burt, Ian Anderson, John Miles, John Manuell, Jim Horne, David Burt, Ken Aldred, Jack Neeson and Geoff Hickox.

70 YEARS AGO – 1946 Melbourne High School Old Boys played Old Melburnians in the B Section Grand final with MHSOB victorious 18.12 to 12.14. Among the players for MHSOB were Alex Johnson at full back, later President of the VAFA and Alf Keam on a wing. Alf was later Secretary of the VAFA, both wonderful administrators and contributors to the VAFA. 45

SKOBS AND SHARKS PLAY OUT A THRILLER AS FINALS GET UNDERWAY! St.Kevins and Beaumaris gave us a taste of what is to come in this finals series, with a one point St.Kevins win in the first Semi Final of the Under 19 Premier competition. It was a thriller from start to finish at the Waverly oval, with Beaumaris taking the early lead, before being pegged back by the Skobs boys. A seven goal to two quarter from St.Kevins ensured they went in at Half Time 15pts ahead before Beaumaris rallied to take a nine point lead into the final change. It was an enthralling battle, and a fitting final between two of the best sides all season long, and going into the final term both sides knew that their passage to a premiership would be much easier by winning this. It was a tight tussle in the last quarter, but one that saw nine goals kicked. Beaumaris toiled hard all day, and deserved it just as much as St.Kevins did, the agonising margin though shows that Beaumaris are here to win this thing and they will go into this week’s clash against the Old Xaverians full of confidence, and with revenge on their minds, as St.Kevins take a week off before lining up in the Grand Final. Gibbins kicked six goals for the Sharks in what was a dominant display, with Baruhas, O’Brien and Cusack kicking two apiece. Lucas, Baruhas and Cusack were best on ground for the Sharks, along with Gibbins and Grigoriadis. They will reset and hope to get past a tough Old Xavs side next weekend. St.Kevins had a raft of goal kickers but Outen was strong with four while Barnett and Clough booted two each. Outen was probably the best player on the ground and was supported by Dimattina and Kerr. St.Kevins have the week off now and will play the winner of Beaumaris and the Old Xaverians in the Grand Final. The Old Xaverians took on Old Scotch at Sportscover on Sunday afternoon and were able to come away with

the victory to advance to the Preliminary final against Beaumaris. The Xavs were put in an unfamiliar position of playing in an elimination final instead of having a double chance, and they took their chance in a strong display against the old foe. The Xavs made inroads early and didn’t give Scotch any breathing space throughout, and put the score on the board when they had to. Scotch simply weren’t able to claw back the advantage and the Old Xavs ran away with a 35pt victory to advance to week two of the finals series. Troiani booted three for the Xavs and Veljkovic, Lucas, Pirrie and Phillips all bagged two each. Cullity played a blinder as did Whitehead and Vice-Captain Matt Smith. For Scotch, Martin was handy with three, Goodey also booted three and Maxwell and Mason were good throughout, but couldn’t get the team over the line. It was a positive season for Scotch, who will look to bounce back next season, bigger and better than ever. In Premier Reserve the Old Xaverians knocked off top side St.Kevins by six points, with the VAFA’s leading goal kicker Jack Rennex booting 5 to take his tally to 93 for the season. Harry Kelly was strong, as the Xavs advance to a Grand Final, their first under 19 seconds team to get there since 2012. De La Salle will play St.Kevins in the Preliminary final after accounting for Beaumaris by 12pts. Cook kicked three and Morris was the best player on the ground.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016

HOLMESGLEN U 19 SECTION 2 Parkdale Vultures booked their spot in the 2016 Grand Final with an emphatic victory over Old Melburnians at Gerry Green Reserve On Saturday. The Vultures came into the match in a rich vein of form, having taken out the minor premiership winning 16 of 18 games for the season. The ‘Burnies were also in solid form, however by half time they found themselves completely outclassed and outmuscled by a Parkdale side brimming with confidence and up for the fight. Jack Vorbach was best afield, grabbing this match by the scruff of the neck as he has done so often during the back half of the season. Caulfield Grammarians came out on top of fiery elimination clash with St Bedes/Mentone Tigers at Glenhuntly Oval. The match appeared to be going to script at quarter time, as Caulfield jumped the Tigers taking a 28-point lead into the first change. The second quarter belonged to St Bedes/Mentone as they started to get the ascendency in the middle, clawing their way back to a 10-point deficit at the long break. Caulfield steadied in the third term and completely controlled proceedings, inaccuracy in front of goal the only blemish on a dominant premiership quarter. They would run out comfortable 23-point winners to book themselves a preliminary final berth against Old Melburnians. Jack Webster and Nick Baltas were prominent for the winners.

Old Melburnians v Caulfield Grammarians

U19 SEC. 3 Ormond held off a gutsy comeback from Mazenod at Colombia Reserve on Saturday to book a place in next Saturday’s preliminary final. The ‘Monders led all day, and could have put the result beyond their opposition save for some poor kicking for goal in the second quarter. They took a 31-point lead into the half time break and it could very well have been much worse for a Mazenod side that looked flat from the first bounce. The second half was a stark contrast, all of the sudden the Nodders were winning the ball around the contest and finally their forwards got on the end of some quality ball from the engine room. They were within reach at three quarter time, and their last quarter charge was nothing short of inspirational. Mazenod’s mainstay up forward, Matt Perry, was almost the matchwinner. He booted four goals to nearly drag the Nodders over the line. The final margin of seven points was representative of a match of two halves, and a feeling of relief more than anything might be sweeping through the Ormond camp as they look ahead to next week. Collegians and Williamstown played out a thriller at Fearon Reserve on Saturday. Both of these sides has earnt a double chance as they prepared for their top of the table clash. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the minor premiers who got the jump on their opposition. Williamstown looked decidedly flat in the first quarter, as Collegians took advantage jumping out to a three goal lead at the first change. It was only a matter of time before THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016

Williamstown clicked in to gear, and they owned the second quarter to take a slight lead in to the rooms. The punters at Fearon Reserve might have been forgiven for putting this result to bed at half time, as Williamstown looked to have settled their first quarter nerves and were the best team all season. However, Collegians were determined this day. They came out in the premiership quarter with a ferocity at the contest that couldn’t be matched by Williamstown. The five goal to zero quarter set up an enthralling final quarter. As expected, Williamstown came hard at their opposition. They blew some chances in front of goal and were devastated as time expired, down by three points.

Williamstown v Mazenod

UNDER 19 SECTION 4 With a big week of finals beginning last weekend, all eyes were on the two games that were being played to see who will stay and who will go. Old Haileybury took on AJAX in what looked like it was going to be a tight game with the first quarter neck and neck. By half time Old Haileybury kicked away with AJAX trying to keep in the game as much as possible. Jesse Velleman, Adam Sekler and Ben De Winter all getting amongst the action from AJAX but it wasn’t going to stop Old Haileybury get away in the last half with Durras Seccull kicking nine goals and Jack Munro kicking four helping Old Haileybury come home with the victory. The second semi final took place at Ruthven Reserve between Preston Bullants and PEGS with both teams giving it there all to try and take home the win. With the scores even at quarter time all the boys were wanting to try and get the lead by half time. At half time Preston Bullants managed to get the lead going into the second with Christian Fontana, Jordan Hamilton and Brian Hutchinson all supplying the pressure around the ball and helped there team take home the win. AJAX v Preston Bullants

UNDER 19 SECTION 5 To kick off the round we had Mazenod take on St Bedes/Mentone Tigers with both teams fighting hard all game. SBMT were left to only scoring one point by quarter with Mazenod showing off there defensive pressure. As half time rolled round SBMT managed to get a few goals on the score board but with Tom Riley, Jake Charman, Matthew Kovac and Lachlan McKenna all getting plenty touches, Mazenod came running home with the win. With both teams fighting for a spot in the Grand Final in two weeks, the Parkside and De La Salle boys were bringing there all to the game. By half time De La Salle managed to kick away with Parkside trailing not far behind keeping the pressure up. De La Salle led in the last half with James Bailey and Jon Epifanidis kicking three goals each to contribute to there score and helping them garuntee a spot in the grand final. Parkside v Mazenod 47

UMPIRES CORNER

@VAFAUA With the pointy end of the season getting sharper and sharper, appointments become even more prized possessions. From this week on, fewer umpires are required, and the coaches’ job of appointing umpires becomes even more difficult. To those umpires who have missed out on finals this week, thank you all for your efforts throughout the season, and we hope to see you around the grounds supporting your colleagues. To those who continue, we wish you the best of luck in your matches, and know you will represent yourselves, and the VAFAUA community, to the best of your abilities. Another Milestone! Well, we thought we were finally out of milestones after Peter ‘Teasa’ Teasdale notched up his 300th, but we were rather wrong. This week David ‘BT’ D’Altera notches up his 600th VAFA match.

Grand Final Announcement Evening Grand Final Appointments (for D1 – D4 and U/19 grades) and Preliminary Final Appointments (Premier grades) will be announced following training on Thursday 8th September. This is a great evening to get together and to celebrate the achievements of our umpires, and Greg Rolfe has even promised a meat tray raffle. We’ll also be firing up the BBQ. We’d love to see all umpires and their supporters (parents very welcome) down on Thursday. We had a huge turnout last year, and we’d love to see the rooms bursting at the seams again this year.

David joined the VAFA from the VFA in 1985, and after a solid year missed finals with a knee injury. He went on to umpire 450 games as a Field Umpire, before following the well-trodden path of field umpires into the goals. Since joining the goal umpire ranks he has completed another 150 matches, mostly in Premier C and Division 1, including numerous goal grand finals. Congratulations ‘BT’, and we’re sure you’ve got another few hundred games in you! New Committee On Thursday evening the membership voted in the 2017 VAFAUA Committee. The committee is very similar to last year, with a few title changes. We welcome Haydn onto the committee for the first time. Your 2017 committee is: President : Owen Hinson Vice President: Andrew Hartnett Secretary: Michael Gough Treasurer: Mitch Nire Social Secretary: Haydn O’Connor General Committee: David Anselmi General Committee: Adrian Keane General Committee: Daniel Silfo Congratulations to all of these gentlemen on their election.
