Amateur Footballer SEASON 2016

10 SEPTEMBER

If you get injured, what’s your game plan?

Injuries in footy are inevitable, but sitting around a waiting room or waiting weeks to see a specialist doesn’t have to be.

Take advantage of the same elite services used by professional footballers, and get back out on the park with your mates sooner.

Injured VAFA players now receive fast track priority treatment at Epworth Richmond, Victoria’s largest private hospital emergency department.

Erin Street, Richmond Open 24/7.

Epworth. Better.

In 2011, a fantastic secondment opportunity in America came up and while I was quietly petrified, I knew it would change my life. In just 5 months, I met an incredible range of people, and was really challenged professionally. I grew up more in that short time than in the 5 years prior – there’s no other situation where I could learn as much as I did so quickly. DOM MOLLUSO Audit Manager, William Buck

PROMOTION AND PREMIERSHIPS Seven clubs achieved the success of not only earning the right to play in a Grand Final but also promotion to a higher section. It has been seven years since Pt Cook commenced as a senior club as an extension of their juniors. In that time they have played in four finals series and this is their first Grand Final as they play local rivals Westbourne Grammarians in the Division 4 Grand Final. Both of these clubs promotion to Division 3 is a well-deserved reward. We have seen a number of teams in recent years go from Division 4 with one of these, Kew, now playing in Premier C. Maybe this is ambitious strategy but achievable. Hawthorn and Glen Eira have clearly been the two outstanding teams in Division 3 and this was showcased with dominant performances on the weekend. Hawthorn have been a club who has sat in Divisions 3 and 4 for most of their history but they have been building over the past five years and this promotion is well deserved. Glen Eira have gone through various incarnations and the latest partnership with Monash Gryphons has borne fruit immediately. They deserve success after a few barren years. Preston Bullants commenced in Division 4 in 2013 and immediately earnt promotion coming from sixth after the home and away season. They have become a finals specialist winning the Division 3 premiership in 2014. Two years in Division 2 before winning both finals on the way to this weekend’s Grand Final. Four years in the VAFA and a chance at winning a third flag. It has been a frustrating time for Old Geelong since being relegated from Premier C in 2010. In the previous four years they have lost three preliminary finals so it was with a great deal of relief that they finally got the win on the weekend and are back in the Premier Sections. There may be something building at OGs and they along with Old Mentonians will be welcome additions to that section.

Mazenod and Caulfield were both relegated from Premier B this year and finished on top of the Premier C ladder. Mazenod ran out convincing winners on the weekend and have bounced straight back. Caulfield will need to regroup under former Big V coach Simon Williams, when they do battle with Peninsula. The Pirates seniors have never won a senior premiership nor been as high as Premier B. A huge match in their 37 year history. Congratulations to St Bede’s Mentone Tigers who lasted two years in Premier B before winning promotion on Saturday. Beaumaris were undefeated in the first half the season and clearly the best team in Premier B. Since then they have played ten matches for five wins and five losses. They take on Old Scotch who have found some form of late winning their past five. One of these relegated Premier clubs will be rewarded with a ticket in the Premier section. It was a tense match at Sportscover Arena on Sunday with the loser out of Old Xaverians and University Blacks eliminated. Well done to Old Xaverians who get the opportunity to continue their finals campaign against University Blues on Sunday. Old Trinity were magnificent on Saturday, particularly in the second quarter where they gained the ascendancy and won the right to play in their second consecutive William Buck Premier Grand Final at IKON Park. Cut throat finals have that added pressure and this was clearly evident on the weekend. I have enjoyed the two Preliminary Final model that the AFL introduced and I believe this works even better in the VAFA with the two winners, apart from the Premier Section, earning the double prize of a Grand Final berth and promotion. Good luck to all those playing in the fourteen VAFA Grand Finals on the weekend. COVER: Old Scotch in action during 2016.

DEFENCE VS. OFFENCE Six goals from Brendan Goss led Old Xaverians to a thrilling 15-point come-from-behind victory over University Blacks at Sportscover Arena. Trailing at every break throughout the day and by as much as four goals 16 minutes into the third term, Xavs mounted their comeback via controlled possession and defensive pressure in a sensational fourth term performance. Four unanswered majors in the final quarter solidified the Xavs’ victory as Tyson Thomas and John Shaw led the charge from the midfield. Shaw engaged in a competitive one-on-one battle with Blacks big man, Josh Steadman, in the first half but managed to wrestle back the momentum and give first use to the Xavs midfielders. Despite getting a number of opportunities to close the gap late in the fourth term, the Blacks were unable to penetrate their own forward 50 as Dan Noonan and Nick Wynne intercepted everything which came their way. Matt Handley (three) and Thomas (two) added five for the Xavs as Goss put on a forward line masterclass. The wide expanses of Sportscover gave him more freedom to get on the lead and he rarely made a mistake with the set shot from beyond 45m. The Blacks were irrepressible for the first three quarters as Hugh Curnow starred with a bevy of disposals and elite ball use. Matthew O’Brien popped up for three goals and loomed as the genuine x-factor, while Brent Sheahan got better as the match progressed. Xavs will now meet University Blues in next week’s preliminary final after they went down to Old Trinity by 61 points yesterday. Old Trinity will get a chance at redemption in this year’s William Buck Premier Grand Final after they booked their spot in the big dance with a comprehensive 61-point victory against University Blues at Sportscover Arena. After an even first term with just one point separating the two sides, the T’s piled on nine goals to one in the second as Brendan Iezzi, Ben Howell and Andrew 2

Kyriacopoulos gave constant delivery to the T’s power-packed forward line. Iezzi was particularly outstanding as he won clearances, tackled ferociously and pumped the ball inside 50. Luther Juric was electric as he sent through three goals in the second-term blitz, while Seb Nicolosi and Alex Polidoros added to their totals. Ed Weatherson continued his stellar season as top-scorer with four goals for the T’s, while Tim Gaeppen and Cam Williams registered two each for the Blues. Marc James found plenty of the sherrin as he claimed ownership over the far wing, while Dan Batarilo and Clayton Hinkley fought hard for the Blues. They will now face the winner of Old Xaverians and University Blacks in next week’s preliminary final, while the T’s rest up ahead of their second consecutive shot at their first William Buck Premier cup. University Blues and Old Xaverians will lock horns in what is going to be nothing short of sensational. The Blues will not give up nine goals as they did in the second term against the T’s and the Xavs will likely not fall behind for the first three quarters. Defence vs offence. Kobe vs Duncan. Goss vs Cuningham. Shaw vs Williams. The wide expanses of Sportscover will fall into the Xavs’ hands, but when you average 57 points against throughout the home and away fixture, you’re doing something right. Quinton Gleeson is a genius and his attention to detail will fix any holes evident against the T’s. Ted Woodruff and Pat Hawkins have taken the Xavs from a mid-tier team in the first five rounds to the form side of the second half of the season. Game on.

PREMIER B

WHO WILL JOIN ST BEDE’S IN WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER? Four teams entered the battlefield that is Premier B finals footy and only three came out the other side. Well done to St Bede’s/Mentone who were the first to claim a Grand Final berth as well as a spot in the William Buck Premier section in 2017 with their 27-point win over Beaumaris. They will be joined by either the Sharks or Old Scotch after the Cardinals came from behind in the last quarter to hold off a determined Monash Blues unit by seven points.

BEAUMARIS (1ST) V ST BEDE’S/MENTONE (2ND) Both Beaumaris and St Bede’s/Mentone had similar paths to the finals. After being relegated from Premier section, the Sharks wasted no time indicating that they fully intended to climb back up asap. They went undefeated through the first half of the season, with a draw against Fitzroy their only blemish. Although they were tested several times in the later rounds, they never dropped out of the top two and finished up the top of the tree. The Tigers got off to a slow start with a couple of early losses, but seven wins in a row through the middle rounds catapulted them into the upper echelons and they spent the second half of the season in the top two, trading places with Beaumaris. Their four point loss to Monash in Round 18 meant they relinquished the minor premiership. The two sides first met back in Round 4 and the Sharks took a six goal win, but the Tigers got their revenge in Round 11 snatching a one-point heart-stopper. Chris Richards got the Tigers off to a great start after a blistering tackle from Michael Barnes allowed the ball to spill out and he finished it off. Beaumaris had the next three scoring shots but couldn’t find the big sticks, and the Tigers joined in with a couple of behinds of their own. Drew Kelly finally broke through for the Sharks, finishing well after Daniel Gribbin crashed the pack and Sam McBain put on a nice spin move. Patrick Hurst replied for the Tigers a couple of minutes later, a neat little sidestep allowing him space to finish a nice goal on the run. Alex Smout took a strong contested mark and converted the set shot, giving the Tigers a two goal lead at quarter time. The second term was all Beaumaris, although they once again took a long time to find the goals with misses from Lachlan Boyd, Gribbin, Matthew Petering and Josh Ward. McBain finished off a chain of handballs at the 18-minute mark and was soon 4

followed by goals from Gribbin and Milne as the Sharks kept the Tigers goalless for the quarter and took a ten-point lead into half time. Jaryd Robertson scored first for the Tigers after the break and Beaumaris added another couple of behinds before Gribbin took a strong contested mark and scored the Sharks first, extending their lead to two goals. The Tigers fought back with goals to Erish Uthayakumar, Paul Wintle and Barnes, restoring the lead, before a late goal to Stephen Milne made it a one-point game at three-quarter time. The scoring end to this point had been the City End, and the Sharks looked to continue that trend when they found Milne one-on-one in front of goal twice in the first five minutes and he kicked goals both times, giving Beaumaris the ascendancy. However, the Tigers managed to reverse the momentum, starting with a great tackle to Barnes who was rewarded and converted the free kick. George Rowlands and Uthayakumar followed soon after, but a Milne goal halfway through the term brought the margin back to three points. In the end the Tigers finished with a rush, with goals to Barnes, Robertson, Josh Cowan and Uthayakumar in the last ten minutes allowing them to run away with a 27-point win and, as a result, a week off, a Grand Final berth and a spot in William Buck Premier.

OLD SCOTCH (3RD) V MONASH (4TH) Old Scotch and Monash might have finished with the same win-loss record, but they got there in very different ways. The Cardinals spent the first half of the season in the top two, but five losses in six games late in the season saw them having to fight for a finals spot. Premier B newcomers Monash lost their first three games and were cellar-dwellers early on before eight wins from their last ten games saw them barge into the top four in the second half of the season. However, they weren’t the only ones, and found themselves needing to beat top team St Bede’s/Mentone in the last round to progress to finals action. The Blues got up in a four point thriller, ensuring fourth place and a sudden-death elimination final against Old Scotch. The season series is tied at 1-1. Old Scotch won their Round 2 encounter by 41 points before Monash squared the ledger in Round 13 with a two-point victory. Much like the game the previous day, both sides took a long time to find the goals and it was the team wearing blue who struggled the most, with THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016

Monash adding three early behinds before Tim Macmillan nailed a set shot from the boundary to open the Cardinals account 17 minutes into the contest. Max Van den Broek added another one a minute later before Andre Headberry took a ‘speccy’ and converted the set shot for the Blues. Van den Broek marked a Monash kick-in and kicked a late goal, giving the Scotchies a ten point lead. The second term was an even contest, with the Old Scotch lead remaining in single-digits for most of the time. It was goal-for-goal early on, with Nick Cox taking a contested mark and kicking truly in between goals to Nick Petering and Macgregor Cameron. James Sansom marked from a Monash kick-in and slotted the goal, but a late one from Nick McConville brought the margin back to three points at half time. Scoring dried up in the third quarter, with just three goals kicked and the last score for the quarter was at the 17-minute mark. Jono Daggian was rewarded for a great tackle at the top of the goal square. Lachlan Byrne-Jones drew the ire of the Monash fans when he dropped a simple mark in his defensive area, allowing Cameron Pither to pounce and get one back for the Blues. Hayden Calway took a contested mark and nailed the set shot, giving the

Cardinals a two goal lead. I had to leave at three-quarter time and even though OId Scotch seemed to be in control, I had a feeling I’d probably miss the best quarter of the match. As both teams entered the final term playing to keep their season alive, the intensity and tempo lifted and the small crowd came to life. Monash found an extra gear and kicked the first three goals of the quarter through McConville, Maddison Hardiman and Liam Darcy. At the 26-minute mark, Old Scotch hadn’t kicked a goal and the Blues had the lead and all the momentum. However, there was another twist in this tale when James Bowden marked inside 50 and nailed the goal, bringing the scores level. A couple of minutes later Ben Whitfort was caught holding the ball in the backline and Daggian kicked truly, somehow giving Old Scotch the lead. Sansom kicked a point at the 30-minute mark and the Cardinals had put the game out of Monash’s reach, ending their season and setting up a Prelim final showdown with Beaumaris.

“NODDERS AWAITING A CHALLENGER” It’s been an incredible season once again in Premier C. Each week, no team were guaranteed a victory and every side were made to earn their four points. It made for an exceptionally exciting finish to the home and away season before the finals action began. The finals lived up to all expectations, except one. Mazenod far exceeded my expectations and have become immediate favourites for the Premiership. They completely blew Caulfield out of the water, defeating them by 83 points. Mazenod were not missing any opportunities this September, making an immediate impact from the first bounce. The Nodders on the day could only be described as, ON. They did not miss a beat, completely controlling the ball and playing on their own terms for the entirety of the four quarters. Caulfield missed their chance early to remain in the contest before the Nodders kicked away to a 23 point lead at quarter time. But this would be the closest the Fields got for the remainder of the day, thanks to another sensational performance by Robert Mann and well helped by Jaydyn Hill. The Fields were held goalless in the second term as the Nodders piled on another 3.5 to extend their lead beyond 40 points. The Fields scoring drought was broken in the third term as they managed another two goals bringing their game tally to 3.8 but it was the Nodders midfield dominance that proved too strong, feeding their forwards. Bradley Kovac, Rees Thomas and Thomas Cincotta kicked truly, captaliusing on the forward entries, finishing with three goals each, followed by six other goal kickers. It was a forgettable performance from the Fields who finished the game with 4.13 and an 83 point loss, and will now face the Pirates for a second chance at a Grand Final. The Nodders will now enjoy a weekend off, resting up and no doubt be in attendance at Trevor Barker Oval, examining their Premierships threats. Peninsula were superb on Sunday as they ran out 26 point winners against Old Ivanhoe 6

Grammarians at Box Hill City Oval. The Pirates were electric with their run and carry, constantly cutting open the Old Ivanhoe’s defence. The Pirates switched the ball at every opportunity and through the pace off their half backs and wings, were virtually unstoppable with their ball movement. Despite a dominant first term from the Pirates and the Hoes unable to kick out of their defensive 50, along with eight scoring shots to one, it was only a 17 point margin at quarter time. With the Hoes only managing two goals to half time, the Pirates felt somewhat safe with a 21 point lead at the main break, but the Hoes weren’t done with yet. Brilliant tap work from Dave Bruno gave midfielders Sean Everington and Michael Del Monte first touch and electrifying clearances to fight back from their deficit. Adrian Del Monte was clever up forward, setting up teammates when not kicking one of his four goals as the Hoes gave him most of the forward 50 to work with. Pirate captain Stu Grigg, kicked a crucial goal in the third term, to keep the Pirates in the lead. A correct decision was made after the siren by the umpires to not allow a goal to the Pirates during the third term break, leaving only a 6 point lead to the Pirates after the Hoes gallant fightback. With the last quarter determining next weekend or not, the game went up a notch. The Pirates simply out played the Hoes and looked to execute their style of movement far more efficiently in the final term, sticking to their structures and rarely panicking. Chris Johnson’s injuries and niggles seemed to get the better of him, sitting out the last 10mins of play, as the Hoes faced a tough comeback now a man down. The Pirates seemed to read the play better, getting numbers back for the Hoes kick down the line, switching play and giving their forwards superb entry. 26 points was the final siren margin, as the Pirates now face Caulfield at Trevor Barker Oval.

MY TIP Peninsula Pirates to defeat Caulfield by 17 points.

Richard Evans, VAFA Life Member - On Saturday I was Duty Officer at the Ajax v Preston Bullants Under 19 Preliminary Final. With little more than ten minutes left to play and only eight points separating the teams a heavy collision took place between an Ajax player and Tom Beck of Preston. Tom came off worst with cuts to his face and very severely concussed. Without care for the state of the match Ajax’s Reece Israel immediately assisted Tom. He helped him to his feet and tried to get him to the boundary line out of harm’s way and made certain he was O.K

SPORTSMANSHIP ALIVE AND WELL IN VAFA In the hurly burly of Football---and indeed life, it is these spontaneous acts of Sportsmanship, and human decency that reinforces what our game is about and what epitomises Amateur Football. As a former Board Member and President of our Association I was proud of what I witnessed. Indeed the VAFA, the Ajax Football Club, Reece and his family should be equally proud for such a demonstration of Sportsmanship. Tom was taken by Ambulance and I am advised he is thankfully O.K. with no major problems.

GRILL’D RISING STAR 2016 GRILL’D RISING STAR SHORTLIST: After a thorough deliberation process, the six nominees shortlisted to win the 2016 Grill’d Rising Star Award are in. Those shortlisted and in the running to take out the coveted award are Mitch Hughes (St Bernard’s), Harry Hill (Old Brighton), Tom Fisher (Old Brighton), Christian Carnovale (Hampton Rovers), Luke Gogis (Ormond) and Jack Holden (St Kevin’s). The

Rising Star Award has long been an accurate prelude of future football success, with previous winners including two-time Woodrow Medallist Brendan Iezzi (2007), VFL listed players James Fletcher (2015), Anthony Scott (2014) and Nick Wynne (2009) and AFL player Dan Nicholson (2010).

MITCH HUGHES (ST BERNARD’S) What the club said: “Some of Mitch’s strengths include being a strong one-on-one player, displaying great pressure and defence, can kick on both sides of his body with accuracy and he is known for laying strong tackles and feeding the hand ball out.”

CHRISTIAN CARNOVALE (HAMPTON ROVERS) What the club said: “He made his senior debut in 2014 and featured in the premiership that year. Despite his age, Christian is renowned as a leader both on and off the field, and as such was announced in the leadership group this year. Carny is a beast in the midfield, attacks the ball and lays a strong tackle.”

HARRY HILL (OLD BRIGHTON) What the club said: “Harry‘s reputation preceded him and when he weaved through a pack and goaled for the third time against the Rovers in Round 3, to set up a seven goal lead at half-time, we knew we were looking at our next champion.”

TOM FISHER (OLD BRIGHTON) What the club said: “Tom uses the ball beautifully and loves to take a big mark, often sliding across a pack as he did in the goal square at Hampton earlier in the season, to kick the sealer against the Rovers. He is one of several youngsters thrust into leadership roles after the retirements of so many of our players, but his courage and skill is quickly establishing him as one of our most valued players and clubmen. “

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016

LUKE GOGIS (ORMOND) What the club said: “He plays a similar brand to Joel Selwood showing courage and silk skills. Luke’s strengths include being a strong contested footballer, he has high work rate and is efficient by foot. He is renowned at the club for his tackling pressure and defensive skills. He has played TAC and Frankston VFL and has stood up at all these levels.”

JACK HOLDEN (ST KEVIN’S) What the club said: “Jack plays a lot like Steele Sidebottom as he tends to find good space and has the ability to play in a number of roles. He reads the play and understands the game very well.”

FIFTH AND FINAL FIGHT Old Mentonians and Old Geelong will meet for the fifth time this season after the Oggers downed PEGS by 40 points to book themselves a spot in the Division 1 Grand Final and Premier C in 2017. It is the dream finale. After one of the most unpredictable seasons in VAFA history the two best teams in the division meet once again in what will be a battle for the ages. After their four encounters this season it is two a piece. Isn’t it fitting that we have a decider of such epic proportions? A slight breeze was the only factor preventing perfect conditions at Bill Lawry Oval on Sunday and it was the Ogs that played the conditions best all day long. The first half was largely controlled by Old Geelong, yet poor conversion cost them dearly as it did in their previous final against the Panthers. The 25-point half-time margin flattered PEGS and they did their chances no harm in the third stanza with a clinical five goals straight. 22-points was the margin going into the last. There was a pulse for the boys from the runway. Unfortunately for them their hope was short lived as the Ogs ran away, broke the lines, moved the ball exquisitely by hand and produced six final quarter goals to book themselves a well-earned spot in the big dance. Former Cat and team of the year midfielder George Burbury was the star of the show with a bag of five in a dominant display. Jock Grimshaw and Ryan Parsons added two crucial majors of their own. Another star Ogger Colby O’Brien was absolutely everywhere, Sandon James played his role to perfection and under 19 revelation Harry Morrison showed he is well and truly worthy of a spot in the Oggers finals outfit and will provide much excitement moving forward. It was a disappointing day for PEGS as they were unable to bounce straight back up to Premier C following relegation in 2015. David Borg was the focal point up forward with three majors, Daniel Flaherty added two of his own and Cam Livori capped off an outstanding season with two majors 16

and the honour of being named PEGS best player on the big stage of a preliminary final. Brad Jones, Daniel Ryan and Jack Condon all fought valiantly. Another season in Division 1 waits for PEGS who will hope to go two wins better in 2017. Now… onto the big one. A pre-season dating back to November 2015, team bonding activities, gruelling time-trials, the marathon that is the 18 round home and away season and two weeks of finals footy all comes down to this weekend. Anything that has happened prior to this Saturday counts for nothing. This is what defines players; their performances on the big stage are what count. Coaches will demand players to stick to the game plan and structures, although it will be difficult for all not to get caught up in the emotion that comes with playing in the culminating fixture. Who will make a name for themselves? Who cares the most? Who wants it more? Who will stand up? All will be answered as these two proud clubs go head to head at Coburg City Oval. Both sides will need to go in with detailed plans to curtail the opposition superstars. For Old Geelong, George Burbury is the obvious one who will have a fair say in how close they get to holding up the cup. However, ball magnets Colby O’Brien and Hugh McKay will cause headaches as well. Josh Hutley will provide run and carry from the back half, Sam Youngman could bob up and kick a handful and of course the Panthers best defender simply has to go to the competitions premier centre half forward, Callum Wood. There will be plenty to think about for the Panthers. As there will be for the Ogs too. The Panthers line up is jam packed with match winners and their depth across the board has been an obvious strength all season. Dynamic forwards Kyle Conlon and Darcy Brown are perhaps where their greatest strength lies. These two are a dynamic duo that complements each other superbly. Cam Sharp has the ability to cut a side to pieces along the wing,

Aaron Hodges provides fantastic rebound from defence and the rangy Dustan Mills is very hard to match up on and will cause serious qualms for the Ogs. It is fair to say both sides will have a lot on their plate all over the ground. The scene is set. I have no doubt this game will live up to all expectations. As has been the case for many fixtures this season it is a real toss of the coin match up. I can’t quite put my finger on it but I have a feeling the it is time for the Ogs to unleash, make a stand and head to Premier C with a flag under the belt. Old Geelong by four points for me!

Congratulations to both sides for all they have achieved throughout this enthralling season. It has been a pleasure to watch. Saturday will be no different.

ST JOHNS OC V PRESTON BULLANTS Preston Bullants secured Division 1 football for 2017 and a Grand Final place as they defeated West Brunswick by 41 points at Garvey Oval. Coming into this game off defeating Yarra Valley OB, the Bullants remained that form with only inaccuracy keeping West Brunswick in touch. Preston put through 3.7 in the first to the Magpies 2.2 to lead by 11 points at the first change. Again the Bullants would kick more behinds than goals in the second quarter as both sides kicked 2.3 to have the margin remain at 11 points at the half. Coming out of the long break, West Brunswick had their chances to reduce the margin as they had more shots on target than the Bullants but no goals to two in the Bullants extended the lead to 20 points. The floodgates opened in the last as five final quarter Preston goals to one ended West Brunswick’s season a week earlier than they had hoped. Preston Bullants ruckman Nathan Parkes was the dominant tall on the field as he was ably supported by Alex Ricco, George Warton, Damon Marcon, plus Sean and Dean Calcedo. Damon Marcon was also the major goal kicker with three goals as they were shared throughout the side. Christopher Simpson remain valiant in defeat for West Brunswick alongside Evan Lloyd battling up back. Bill Irving was the Magpies only multiple goal kicker.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW St Johns OC off their week off will face Preston Bullants with it all on the line. Despite being the class of the competition all season St Johns OC have split their season series with the Bullants, winning by 32 points at Thomas Carroll and the Bullants on top at W.R Ruthven by nine points. The JOC’s are the most rounded of the two sides and were rewarded with five players featuring of the team of the year sides. Captain Glenn

18

Costas and fellow midfielder Corey Ely will be important creating impetus from the midfield for the JOC’s as they lead the pack of small but large body midfielders. Anthony Brannan will be tasked sparking run from the half backline with tall defender Dylan Webb needing to back up his impressive lock down performance against West Brunswick alongside John Ayama. Up forward Aaron Thornton is the obviously talking point as the Division’s leading goal kicker but Trent Edwards and Rohan Scott have stepped up of late to be a foil for St Johns. And the St Johns forward line will have to be at their best as Preston Bullants strength remains their defence with team of the year full back Reed Jepson more than likely going to try and lock down Thornton. They have a strong bodied midfield of their own with Damon Marcon and Dean Calcedo likely to even many contests with hopefully good supply from ruckman Nathan Parkes, who was stiff to miss the team of the year. Their forward line is a more even affair with Marcon kicking many as he rests forward and Jake Powell has stepped up as late. As it shapes up, defensively and through the midfield both sides are extremely strong and can’t see either side (injuries aside) taking complete dominance through these parts of the ground. Whereas up forward, Preston Bullants don’t seem to have the targets that can put on a massive burst on the scoreboard in comparison to St Johns OC trio. As a result, in a tight affair I believe that a few extra goals contributed by either Thornton, Edwards or Scott will be the difference.

TIP St Johns OC to defeat Preston Bullants by 15 points

HAWKS AND SAINTS BOOK THEIR PLACE IN THE GRANNY

After the excitement of two semi-finals that were settled in the final quarters – one being settled in the final minutes – the preliminary round weekend games were all but over after the first quarter! After two thumping victories our grand finalists have been decided. Lets check out the games...

HAWTHORN AFC DEF. POWER HOUSE AFC Hawthorn has monstered their way to the Division 3 Grand Final with a 143-point demolition over Power House, 179-36, at St. Bernards College on a perfect Saturday afternoon. Powered by five-goal hauls to Jason Ince and Russell White the Hawks used a dominant first half performance to put the result beyond a shadow of doubt in a complete team effort. It was perhaps unfair that Power House’s season ended with such a whimper given the courage the club showed to reach the second week of the finals after entering as winners of seven straight games. The House continued to play with the ‘nothing to lose’ mentality that got them albeit surprisingly to this stage in the first place after their come from behind win over UHS-VU last weekend but it was no match for the Hawks. Hawthorn showcased their slick ball movement and outside running with Luke Piccolo and Sam Gold continuing their scintillating form resulted in the forwards receiving pin-point passes that they were able to convert. Hawthorn peppered the scoreboard throughout the first quarter posting five goals with four behinds while Power House were able to get two majors of their own before the siren sounded. It was however a second quarter onslaught by the Hawks that snuffed out any chance of that they would wilt in the Winter Sun as they kicked 11 goals to one to go into half-time with an unassailable 85-point lead. From there it was party time for the Hawks faithful as they piled on another 10 goals to two in the final half including holding Power House scoreless in the final term. James Theofanis worked tirelessly for the House up front and was rewarded with two goals but it was the Hawks stifling defence that proved too strong in the victory. Being able to slow key forward Nick Nagel holding him to a lone goal after he had booted a combined 18 in the previous three weeks proved to be vital in stopping any Power House attack. The loss brings an end to an inspired campaign for head coach Ant Voyage and his men, after a tough 2015 season the squad 20

were able to double their win total this season and make a return to Finals footy. A disappointed showing but they can find solace in the fact they were one of the best teams in the Division for the last two months of the year, something to build upon in 2017. For Hawthorn their stellar season continues on and they have sent an ominous warning with the resounding victory as they have another crack at that elusive premiership title and the ensuing celebrations down at Rathmines Road on the last Saturday of the season.

GLEN EIRA DEF. LA TROBE UNIVERSITY Glen Eira has marched through to the clubs first grand final since 2011 after a commanding 74-point win over La Trobe University, 108-34, at Garvey Oval on a sunny Sunday afternoon. In a contest with the highest stakes on the line, it was Glen Eira who used a superb opening term to jump out to a 20-point lead at the first siren and didn’t look back. La Trobe entered on a five-game winning streak but struggled to settle into the game, evident on the scoreboard as they quickly fell behind and couldn’t fight their way back into the game. In the magnificent opening half where they out-ran, outtackled and out-smarted the Trobers, the Saints shifted to another gear in the second half. The Saints stepped on the gas in the third quarter to open up a 60-point lead at three-quarter-time. As they kicked five goals and conceded only one goal in the third, while adding another four and again only conceded the one goal in the final term to run out the massive victors. Matthew Cassidy was the star of the game dominating from the opening bounce, while Leigh Stevens was on fire in front of the big sticks adding a game-high five goals. Julius Waras Carstensen was brilliant with four goals, while Roman Zemlinsky was another of the Saints who stood up in the contest. The Trobers who had been scoring with ease over their winning streak averaging 105.6 points per game failed to make an impact at the attacking end that has brought a subdued close to their amazing season. After finishing 10th in 2015, the Trobers were sensational in 2016 finishing with the best defence in the Division but unfortunately the rock solid backlines faulted when the season was on the line. Elliot Kelly was a star throughout the year, assisted week in and week out by Jacob Christie, while upfront Mitchell Gleeson had a stellar year taking out the goal-kicking title, some definite THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016

building blocks for a renewed tilt at the title in 2017 but today was all about Glen Eira. After stumbling into the Finals losing two of their final three games to fall to second on the ladder, the Saints shook off any signs of being a potential upset candidate with the controlling victory getting back to the defensive focus that saw them go undefeated for the first 15 games of the season. Although next week is their biggest test attempting to slow the high scoring Hawks.

PREVIEW Now it is time for the biggest game of the year. As the high scoring Hawthorn Hawks face off against the tenacious Glen Eira Saints. They have been the best two teams all season long. They split their two

regular season match-ups with each club winning at their opponents’ home ground. The game will feature 10 of the 22 from the team of the year in a star-studded affair. The Saints will face the almost insurmountable task of slowing the ferocious Hawks scoring, they have done it once already this season but weren’t able to replicate the same success when Hawthorn visited Packer Reserve in the final round of the season and squared the ledger. Now we have the decider in what has the potential to be an instant classic, but I believe the Hawks team-based offensive firepower will be too much for the Saints to douse and result in the Hawks finally celebrating that elusive premiership.

WARRIORS OR DOGGIES? Point Cook were able to account for Mt. Lilydale un-scathed as they just harassed the Rams for four quarters. Mt. Lilydale tried hard all day but, simply didn’t have the firepower. The Rams struggled in the mid-field and couldn’t penetrate the forward 50 anywhere near as they would’ve liked. Meanwhile, the Warriors looked on from the sidelines. This is a match-up we’ve probably been predicting since half-way through the year. The undefeated Westbourne, boasting the best defence and easily the best attack Vs. Point Cook, who have also had a dominant year and the only team to lose to Westbourne by single figures during the year. The stage is set for that “One day in September” and a game to remember. Before we get into it all, let’s review the Prelim:

PRELIM: POINT COOK DEF MT. LILYDALE After Point Cook lost to the Rams by 10pts on 23/7, the Doggies knew not to take this final lightly. Mt. Lilydale were full of confidence entering into the game with a near full side. But, all of that was disposed of and put to rest as Point Cook came out early firing five goals to three , in scintillating fashion. On this occasion though, the winning quarter was when the Doggies put their “claws” to the Rams throat, led by Mason Kip across halfback, holding them scoreless and still hitting the scoreboard 6-5, setting up a 10 goal buffer in the long break. The only thing I predicted wrong for Point Cook, kicking straight and “cannot afford to rely on mid-fielders this week to shoulder the scoring”. With William Dawson out, BOG Jordan Lampi stood up with 7 majors, his 2nd highest for the year and was head and was damaging. Robbie Milne (2 goals) also did his thing with his pace and two-way running. Sam Young, who hasn’t played since 18/6, came in for Dawson and kicking 3 goals against a quality side was a major plus, being another option up forward. After half-time, the Rams were able to show some form but, still lost the 2nd half by 22, a more respectable deficit. Tim 22

Legg, never stopped trying as did Dave Brambilla from the backline whilst Stephen Donald (4 goals) and Jai Perrett (2) were the only ones that seemed to fire. Point Cook’s 83 point victory is definitely a confidence booster. They’ll need it as they head into the big one against Westbourne . . . .

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW Well, we are finally here for the Grand Final and at the time of printing, the VAFA have not yet confirmed a venue. The choice of neutral ground should not be a factor for either side as both the Doggies and the Warriors are used the “finals size” grounds. Whilst Westbourne will easily go into the game as clear favorites, Point Cook still have something to say about this week’s outcome and I pose some burning questions: Westbourne averaged an incredible 155 pts a game in the home/away season and 86 pts in 3 games against Point Cook, shows the Doggies were on the right track. The Warrior defence on the other hand, held opposition sides to a mere 43 pts and 50 against Point Cook. When you look at Point Cook, 115 pts per game in scoring and 61 pts against. If you’re a Doggies fan, this could be your hope heading into the match. If it’s low scoring and control the tempo, could this play into the Doggies hands? The strengths of both sides is the goal-kicking power. Westbourne forward-line of Collins (73 goals), Chris Hudson (39), Johns (35), Hunter/ Schiano (30 each) are active leaders, can kick from anywhere and share the ball. At the other end, Herbertson (27), Lampi (31) and Hegarty (15) from the mid-field are super important. Could Sam Young be the 2016 Shane Ellen? But, William Dawson (85) is super important for the Doggies this week. Surely he won’t miss? Will he be 100%? At the other end, the West Brunswick backline have been incredibly solid. Whilst the majority THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016

of the ball was spent in the forward line, the tall mobile backline of Rompel, Dimitriadis, Imber, Salamone and co have done their job. Point Cook boast Mason Kip, Robbie Milne who are quick, Cox, Kerr and the likes need to stand up. Do you play a spare in defense? Do you tag Mason Kip down back? Then there’s battle of the mid-field. . . . it’s 50/50 but, we’ve spoken about Point Cook’s midfield scoring and the Warriors will be accountable. Westbourne have done nothing to change my vote. I’m tipping the Warriors.

THANK-YOU Lastly, after completing my second year as a scribe, first for Div 4, I wanted to take the time to thank a few people that have made my life easier during the season. Thanks for Christian Burgess for his support and filling in for me for a week. @GeoffreyReilley

10 YEARS AGO – 2006 The Old Xaverians were back in contention by storming home against Uni Blues in the A Section preliminary final. Although a couple of goals down at three quarter time the Xavs kicked 8 goals to 1 in the final term with Lynch and Handley too hard to cover up forward for the Blues. Best – Ockleshaw, Santalucia, Hackett, Sapuppo, Lynch (5), Mollard (Old Xavs) and Peterson, North, Rankin, Steele, Henderson, Torney (Uni Blues). It looked like being a terrific grand final - Old Xaverians V Old Haileybury the following week. In a high scoring B Section preliminary final, Old Brighton were too good for Old Essendon Grammarians. Little separated the two teams at the first two breaks but Brighton took a significant lead by three quarter time by 6 goals. Old Essendon kicked another 9 goals in the final term to win 27.10 to 16.11. Best – Perrett, Pirrie (7), Dawes, Tolj, Phelan, Jakobi (Old Brighton) and Leask, Velardo (3), Flaherty (3), Clifton, Goullet, McPherson (Old Essendon). In an absolute thriller in C Section, St Bedes Mentone Tigers defeated AJAX by the narrowest of margins 21.12 to 21.11. The Tigers came from behind in the dying minutes of the game. Fraser Cameron, C Section scribe, described the match as a ‘brilliant game of footy’ and ‘truly befitting the word Grand’. Best – M Wintle, Sawers, Zakic, Beveridge, Hayes (4), Groves (StB) and Janover, Ritterman, Gold, Sutton, Lewski, Israelsohn (AJAX). Old Carey were premiers in D1 Section by defeating Rupertswood comprehensively 19.16 to 12.8 and had led all day. Best – Collins (6), Mullins, Ratcliffe, Angus (4), Howgate (Carey) and West, Sweeney, Gaunt, Phillips, Plummer, Dressier (Rupertswood). Oakleigh won the D2 Section grand final over Peninsula Old Boys 23.12 to 12.11 and never looked like losing from quarter time when they established a 5 goal break. Oakleigh’s Trevor Bromley won the A R ‘Tony’ Fellows best on ground award. Best – Bromley (4), Rutter, Counihan, Harold, Kitts (4), Collins (Oak) and Murphy, Bannister, Bowen, Madden, Fergusson, Bruce (Peninsula). Jamie Kvins and Brent Woodhead were the field umpires. 44

St Bernards published a tribute to ‘Gus’ Mitchell, one of their favourite sons and a much admired figure within the VAFA. Gus was a Life Member at St Bernards, played 100 senior games, won a club best and fairest award, served a year as club captain before entering a coaching career. Gus coached the U19’s to a winning grand final in 1968 then went on to coach the senior team from 1970-79, during which time the Club won its first A Section premiership in 1975. In 1976 Gus coached the VAFA representative team and had earned many other credits for contribution to the local community.

20 YEARS AGO – 1996 St Kevins Old Boys won the C Section premiership. Said to be in near perfect conditions, SKOBS kicking with the aid of a light breeze led at the first change by 2 points. SKOBS had an excellent second term with on-ballers, Dollman, Bowles, Brady and Moore driving the ball forward on numerous occasions enabling their team to hold a half time lead 8.8 to 4.4. St Kilda/South Caulfield struggled with the breeze in the third tem despite the efforts of HayesDewar, Tkocz, Astapenko and the Ryan’s and trailed 5.6 to 11.3 at the final break. The Saints hit back hard early in the final term but SKOBS held on to take the flag 12.15 to 9.6 with the best named as Narasdi, Gribble (3), Garvey, Burden, Dollman, S Kennedy (SKOBS) and Hayes-Dewar, Tkocz, M Ryan, Astapenko, Mihaljevic, O’Sullivan (StK/SC). Monash Blues took the D Section pennant by defeating St Leos Emmaus 11.6 to 7.4. The Blues had taken the lead by half time and refused to relinquish it in a low scoring match. Best – A Barker, Kiers, C Barker, Rogers, Donnelly (4), Hipwell (Monash) and Dinicolantonio, Stephens, Pitcher, Robinson, Ronchi, Mackenzie (StL). In the Coaches Clipboard section of The Amateur Footballer, AFCA/VAFA Executive member and Ormond Senior Coach, Geoff Reilley, interviewed Old Trinity Senior Coach, Simon Dalrymple whose team would be in the B Section grand final the following week. The interview was part of a regular feature in The Amateur Footballer. Simon’s background at the time was – single and operating his own sports marketing business. Previously completed his masters in Sports Science having THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016

obtained a Graduate Diploma in Sports Science and Coaching from Deakin Uni. Simon was also operating as a marketing consultant for the Box Hill football Club in addition to coaching football and cricket at Trinity Grammar. (In more recent times Simon is currently known as a key member at the Bulldogs AFL Club as Chief Recruiter and the person mainly responsible for building the outstanding list at Footscray). Simon told Geoff at the time of the interview that he enjoyed being around football at club level and hoped to do so for a long time!

30 YEARS AGO – 1986 The A Section preliminary final was between De La Salle and Collegians after Collegians had lost to North Old Boys in the second semi and De La had knocked Ormond out in the first semi. Collegians with the wind kicked 7.5 to 2.3 in the first quarter with Richard Herman dangerous up forward. De La came back in the second quarter with their spearhead, Kerin, the main problem for Collegians. It was an even third quarter although Collegians missed many opportunities to convert. The last quarter showed Collegians to be worthy challengers and they earned the right to have another crack at NOBS by winning this match 16.19 to 12.10. Best – Wright, Irvine, Hinchen, R Herman (6), Newman, Schober (Coll) and Greene, Cooke, Hanrahan, Maher, Anderson, Connolly (DLS). Old Xaverians (18.8) were too strong for Fawkner (11.24) in the B Section prelim final with their accuracy in front of goal a feature compared with Fawkner’s numerous misses. Old Xavs were too face the hot favourites, Old Paradians, the following week in the grand final. Best – Summers, Atkins, Peter Curtain, L O’Sullivan (4), O’Shaughnessy, Grummett (Old Xavs) and Roach, Kerslake, G Busst, Rhodes, Hoare, Buckley (Fawk). Banyule had a fantastic day in the C Section grand finals with both seniors and reserves winning. The seniors won 19.18 to Old Trinity 12.17. Best – O’Brien, Hoare, Brockwell, Power, Gibson (3), Gray (Banyule) and Gordon, Cowley, Wallace, Pontefract, O’Shaughnessy, Rienarts (OT). The reserves also won comfortably 10.12 to Hampton rovers 4.9.

40 YEARS AGO – 1976 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016

Old Melburnians defeated Old Haileyburians in C Section grand final 12.22 to 8.15 and gained the H J Stewart premiership cup. OM’s kicked 6.11 to 0.1 in the first quarter and held sway for the remainder of the match. Old Xaverians won the D Section flag against AJAX 20.17 to 15.7 to take home the E F Atkins Cup and La Trobe Blacks won the P A Matthews Cup for competition in E Section, 12.8 to 4.10.

60 YEARS AGO – 1956 In a memorable year with the Olympic Games held in Melbourne, an Exhibition game of Australian Rules was played on the last day of ‘the games’ between a VAFA team and a team of amateur players from the VFL and VFA. The successful VAFA team comprised R Collins (MHSOB), G Gill (Uni Blacks), P Harkness (Old Scotch), L Wakeling (Old Paradians), A Capes (Uni Blacks), P Rochow (Coburg), C Empey (Commonwealth Bank) R Tindale (Old Scotch), M Keogh (Uni Blues), L Williams (Ivanhoe), L Grant (Power house), J D Anderson (Old Melburnians), R Fenton-Smith (Ormond), J Hayes (Uni Blues), I Merrick (Coburg), Bryce Thomas (Old Melburnians), R Pettigrove (Coburg), G Hibbins (Collegians), Murray Mitchell (O Melb A), J.Hannan (Old Melburnians) and Joe Kelly was coach. Les Wenker was the field umpire and Jack Wilson and Bill Quinn were the boundary umpires.

80 YEARS AGO – 1936 In A Section Collegians had enjoyed a successful season and met State Savings Bank in the Grand Final. SSB were the last team to defeat Collegians way back in late May but Collegians were too strong in the big game winning comfortably 11.18 to 6.11, their first premiership since 1904 and their sixth since the VAFA was founded in 1892. The VAFA President, Mr H J Stewart was in attendance and had been captain of Collegians for 10 years and was the last premiership captain of the club. Best – A Wilson, H Day, K Dowding, K Evans, F Heard and MacKinnon (Collegians) and H Bennett, R Bennett, C Chandler, T Paide, (State Bank). Two rovers from the match, Clarrie Vontom (Collegians) and Alby Rodda (SSB) went on to play VFL with St Kilda and Melbourne respectively. 45

SHARKS END XAVS SEASON, SKOBS AWAIT IN FINAL! Two of this season’s best teams went head to head at Waverly Oval on the weekend, with a spot in the Grand Final up for grabs it was going to be an exciting and tense contest. The Xavs, coming off a strong win against Scotch the week before and Beaumaris coming off a shattering one-point loss to

one will be an absolute cracker.

It was a tight start, with Beaumaris taking the early lead going into Quarter Time leading by only five points, with both teams kicking poorly on a blustery day at Waverly. The Old Xavs rallied immediately and kicked four goals to two in the second term to lead by a goal at the main break.

Premier: Beaumaris by 3pts Best on ground: Beattie – Powell (Beau) Reserves: Old Xavs by 4pts Best on Ground: Tom Lyon (OX)

The Old Xaverians will play St.Kevins in the Under 19 Reserves Grand Final, both grand finals will take place at Trevor Barker Oval, Sandringham. Reserves at 11:50 and Premier at 2pm.

GRAND FINAL TIPS:

Both teams lifted their intensity again in the second half, with the Old Xavs holding a slender lead at the final change, leading by nine points. Troiani and Lucas were starting to get plenty of ball, and Cullity continued to dominate around the ground. Tobin was solid as always, and worked to try and get his team back into it. Beattie – Powell was proving a handful for the Xavs, he booted five goals for the Sharks, as they ran away with the game in the final term, kicking six goals to two to advance the Grand Final and break Old Xaverian hearts at the same time. It was a good season for the Xavs, who should be proud, following last season’s Premiership, they were simply bested by a stronger opposition and will bounce back next season better than ever, coaches Pete Callinan and Pat Kennedy should be proud of their efforts this season. They will now focus on helping the Reserve side win the Premiership, something they haven’t done since 2011. Beaumaris will now take on St.Kevins in the Grand Final, the top two teams in this seasons competition, it will be a willing contest, and one that could go right down to the wire. If their Semi-final was anything to go by, this

Caulfield Grammar booked their place in the 2016 Grand Final with a surprisingly comfortable victory over a wasteful Old Melburnians outfit at Bill Lawry Oval. Caulfield came into this final in hot form and would have drawn confidence from their 20-point win over OM’s in round 16. They got the jump early on, winning plenty of ball out of the middle and providing their dangerous forward line with scoring opportunities. Both teams were wasteful in front of the big sticks throughout the match, however OM’s three quarter time score of 0 11 was damning. Matt Ball was dangerous as usual for the winners kicking two important majors, whilst Nick Baltas was best afield.

AJAX and Preston Bullants battled it out last weekend with both teams getting amongst the footy all day. AJAX started off strong and led the whole game with Preston Bullants trailing not far behind. Charles Hamilton, Ben De Winter and Michael Alter all were getting a few touches and managed to get in the best for AJAX helping them bring home the win. With this weekends looking to be a big one between Old Haileybury and AJAX it will be the team who brings there best game that will take bring home the victory and the glorious section winners title. Old Haileybury v AJAX

Parkdale Vultures v Caulfield Grammar

U19 SEC. 3 Ormond will feature in this season’s big dance after toppling minor premiers Williamstown CYMS in a heart stopping preliminary final at Box Hill City Oval. The sides couldn’t be separated in the first half, and whilst Ormond had the better of the play they didn’t execute in front of goal. The minor premiers flexed their muscle in the third term, controlling the ball out of the centre and capitalising on some Ormond turnovers. They took a 28-point lead into the final change, and appeared to be cruising towards a grand final berth. The Williamstown coaches would have been alarmed by the opening five minutes of the final quarter, Ormond’s midfield were doing as they pleased and in the blink of an eye found themselves within striking distance. The Monders took the lead by a solitary point late in the final quarter and that was the final margin as Williamstown players visibly distraught by the result. For the winners, Dimitri Fasoulis was the match winner with five majors in a standout performance. Jake Slee kicked five in defeat for Williamstown to end a sparkling season in front of goal.

GRAND FINAL

Collegians v Ormond

UNDER 19 SECTION 5 Mazenod took the lead early against Parkside with the Mazenod boys getting amongst the action. Parkside quickly turned there low scoring quarter around and managed to get in front by half time. Both teams fought hard going into the second quarter however with Harry Dehne, Marco Creek, Archer Hogg and Marcus Daminato all getting in the best and starring for Parkside they were unstoppable in the last quarter and snatched home the win. Parkside won’t have it easy this weekend coming up against De La Salle in the Grand Final but I know both teams will bring there best to take home the victory. De La Salle v Parkside

UMPIRES CORNER

@VAFAUA

EVEN THE EXPERIENCED GET IT WRONG… With finals being played over Saturdays and Sundays, we know we see a few umpires turn up on the wrong day. So far, we only know of those who turned up on a Saturday for the Sunday game… no harm done, other than to a few egos and a few dollars in petrol. However, we were very surprised to hear that veteran campaigner Mark ‘Gibbo’ Gibson has fallen for the same trap in his duties as umpire observer, arriving on Saturday at Northcote for a Sunday observation. Of course that could have just been Gibbo taking his usual precautions, thinking that he may need a good 24 hours to walk to from Bill Lawry Oval from the nearest available car space…

GRABBING YOUR SIBLING’S GEAR When you live in a family of umpires, there’s always a risk you’ll end up with the wrong gear. Unfortunately for boundary umpire Hugh Bennett, he didn’t end up with the shirt of his brother Henry, but that belonging to his sister Ava. Even more unfortunately for Hugh, VAFAUA past president Greg Rolfe was on hand with camera…

THANK YOU CLUBS With the season drawing to a close all of us at the VAFAUA would like to say thank you to all clubs for your hospitality throughout the season. We know we’re not always the favourite people on the field, but we do appreciate the invitation to socialise at the after-match, and for everything you do for us on match days, from bottles of Gatorade to the bags of ice for the older umpires amongst us! The relationship we have with clubs is the envy of other umpiring groups, and makes our job so much more enjoyable. We wish all clubs the best of luck in your finals today, and look forward to seeing you all again next season.

THANK YOU UMPIRES Congratulations to all umpires who have been appointed to a Grand Final this week. This appointment is the culmination of all of the hard work that you have put in throughout the year, so make sure to take time to enjoy it! Unfortunately, there are only so many appointments to go around this week, and a lot of very good umpires have missed out on a Grand Final match. We hope that you’ve enjoyed the season, both from an umpiring and social perspective, and that we’ll see you back better than ever next year. On Thursday night we will be announcing the grand final appointments for the premier grades following our traditional last training session for the year. All umpires are encouraged to join us for a light run and a few games, followed by a social evening in our rooms.
