HARDEST GAME TO WIN IS THE PRELIM Congratulations to the seven senior teams who were successful in gaining promotion last weekend. In VAFA football the preliminary finals are often the most tense as the winner gets a double reward whilst the loser is left to ponder what might have been. None are more nervous than those teams who lost their second semi and play against the buoyant winners of the first semi who seemingly have nothing to lose. They are my favourite games of the season and is why my preference would be for each section to have two preliminary finals. Anticipation would be high as promotion would all come down to one cut throat match. We have had the final six for a couple of years and Northern Blues won the premiership from sixth spot last year in Division 4 and this year won a one point thriller against Emmaus St Leos to go to Division 2. In the other preliminary final in Division 3 Richmond Centrals wrestled control in the final quarter to defeat Aquinas. The Snakes came from fifth position to gain promotion. Both years the final six has brought up some unexpected results creating added interest in the section. West Brunswick faced a few anxious moments when trailing Canterbury by six points at the last change. However they were too strong and fully deserve the opportunity to take on the undefeated Hawthorn in the Grand Final. Whilst disappointed with the loss, Canterbury should be pleased with their first year in the VAFA, winning a final and building a club that should see them progress. After going through last season undefeated, Kew managed to continue their good form and have gained successive promotions. A former powerhouse of the VAFA, Kew is beginning to get back to their former glory. They displayed great
tenacity to fight in the final quarter after being headed by Old Eltham Collegians. Kew haven’t had it their own way in the second half of the year but they, along with St Mary’s Salesian, have been the stand out teams in Division 2. On behalf of all the VAFA community I pass on our deepest condolences to the Bannister family on the sad loss of Ricky. Ricky had suffered complications after an accident had left him a quadriplegic. On the back of this, Therry Penola Football Club displayed incredible resilience to defeat Old Geelong. Therry suffered their only defeat of the year in the second semi against Williamstown, and return to Premier C after being relegated from that level in 2005. In each of the above matches, the second semifinalists rebounded however it wasn’t the same story for Marcellin and St Kevin’s in the Premier sections. Both of these clubs would be extremely disappointed losing to Parkdale Vultures and Old Carey respectively. Credit must go to both of the victors as they suffered relegation in 2013 and were able to re-group and gain promotion immediately. Premier section joined the finals race with University Blacks reaching their first Premier Grand Final since they won the premiership in 1974. It has been a great period for the club after winning consecutive premierships in the former D and C sections in 2004 and 2005 and the Premier B flag in 2012. They will be joined by either St Bernard’s or Collegians who do battle on Saturday. Good luck to the 900 players representing their club in the twenty Grand Finals played across Melbourne this weekend and we hope to see you all back playing in the VAFA next year.

BLACKS BACK AFTER 40 YEARS In what might be considered one of the best games of Premier football in the past few seasons, Collegians outlasted Old Scotch in a 1st semi final classic to send the Cardinals to a sixth straight defeat in finals. You have to go back to 2003 the last time Old Scotch won a final. For the second straight year, Old Scotch had a first semi final win there for the taking, but lost in thrilling a high scoring finish where the opposition finished the stronger. The action at Trevor Barker Oval was in stark contrast to what transpired at Sportscover Arena. University Blacks were methodical and relentless in their dismantling of St Bernard’s. We must firstly congratulation Blacks on reaching a Premier (or A Grade) grand final for the first time since their last premiership at this level in 1974. That in itself is a huge achievement, but the way this Blacks side have been travelling this year, they could be celebrating a 40 year anniversary and setting a new achievement to celebrate in the future on the same day. The other take away from the weekend is that the two sides that rested half their lineups in round 18 (St Bernard’s made 12 changes this week whilst Old Scotch made 10) against the same opposition, both failed to win. Ross Lyon might do it in the AFL because Fremantle have to fly for 10 hours every second week, however there is an uneasy feeling about it at VAFA level. Sure, both sides had sore bodies amongst their ranks, but surely these players could have been managed over a three-week period starting from round 15? It is of course hard to make these assessments when you are outside the club, but the sentiment from outside (and for that matter from some supporters of both clubs) was don’t flirt with form. It’s a tough call particularly on Old Scotch who had tried the alternative way last year and still lost, what’s more they hadn’t guaranteed finals until Round 17. However it is something where the results mean we cast a negative assessment on the tactic. It was always a concern for St Bernard’s coming into this match that they didn’t have enough scoring options. The numbers were stacked against them. 2
Blacks had 10 players with more than 10 goals to their name this year, St Bernard’s had four. Blacks had outscored St Bernard’s by two goals a game and for that matter had conceded almost three goals a game less. That five goal difference was essentially the difference between the two sides. Whilst the margin was within four goals for much of the match, that four goals felt much bigger. The opening exchanges promised a lot. Tom Sullivan and Adam Bentick were winning clearances, but Blacks were not only tackling hard in the packs, they also ensured that pressure was immense on the handball receiver anytime they were fed from Bentick and Sullivan. Bede Mahon and Tom Napier were just as potent in and under for Blacks. What’s more, Blacks skill on the outside seemed to be at a higher level. Despite all this grunt work, Blacks were only two points up at the first change after a late Chad Jones goal. Tyson Kruse was reasonably well held by Nathan Kazuro, but the Blacks midfielder sill was able to use his lethal left boot to devastating effect on a couple of occasions. The stars though, were the Blacks defenders. Tasked with stopping the Bernards key forwards, Laurie, O’Rourke and Blake all put their hand up at key moments. The pressure from the midfield helped as time and time again St Bernard’s players missed targets, but nevertheless the Blacks defenders were always calm and in control. St Bernard’s challenged for five minutes after the main break, reduced the margin to 14 points, but that’s where the resistance ended. Blacks broke clear, looking like winners and will enter the Grand Final next week as favourites regardless of who they meet. Collegians form of late has been irresistible, as has that of Shura Taft. The last five times Taft has pulled on a purple jumper he has booted: 6, 2, 6, 8 and 7 goals. The seven he kicked last week PREMIER — TIPS IN BOLD St Bernards v Collegians

were in a first semi final. It was a memorable performance in a memorable match. Taft wasn’t the only performance of note. Nathan Giles has gradually been building into a force out of the Collegians back half, complimenting the already well-documented talents of Tardiff and Zimbachs. Josh Kamenar’s form gives the Lions a very settled look at the back. The last quarter was a beauty, so much on the line, it was goal for goal. Both sides missed chances but each miss wouldn’t have killed the game anyway as quick as a flash the ball would be at the other end. It was fast free flowing football, aided by a fast surface in magnificent conditions. Nick Ries spent most of the last term in the defensive 50, but he couldn’t prevent Ed Barlow drifting forward to kick a couple. But he should have had at least another. Barlow kicked one from the boundary then missed his next chance, a set shot from 15 meters out. Another goal to Taft was immediately followed by a goal to Hill at the other end. Then Passador missed with a free team mate in the square and the Scotch misses were starting to add up. A minute later Courtney Hylton baulked around two opponents and kicked truly. Taft booted his seventh after the siren but by that stage the contrasting body language of delirium and despair was on display. Collegians were through and Old Scotch will have the summer to think about another season that got away from them. See Preliminary Final preview on page 58

PANTHERS PROMOTION AS SKOB BLOW DOUBLE CHANCE Old Carey gained promotion back to Premier section, and a Grand Final berth with a five goal win over St Kevins.
going into the final break with a 32 point deficit to chase. The breeze had subsided so that was a very defendable margin.
In ideal conditions at Sportscover Arena, the Panthers avenged their final round loss to SKOB, and consequent forfeiture of the double chance ladder position, with a convincing preliminary final victory.
St Kevins blew a couple of early chances in the final term, as Old Carey attempted to lock down the run that SKOB needed to harness if they were to challenge. Carey managed two goals into what was now a slight breeze that all but sealed the game in their favour. SKOB outscored Carey in the quarter, however most of this scoring was done in junk time towards at the end of the game as the Panthers were resting their stars.
Cam Howat won the toss for Carey, and chose to kick with the advantage of a fairly stiff breeze, blowing to the scoreboard end in the opening term. St Kevins had the run of play for the opening ten minutes of the quarter, wining football plenty of inside 45 entries. Wayward kicking and turnovers inside 45 meant SKOB couldn’t convert, however. A St Kevins forward-line turnover saw the play switch rapidly through the middle, and Cam Howat snared a classy running goal seconds after. From thereafter, the Panthers capitalised on the assistance of Mother Nature, kicking five goals and holding SKOB to two behinds for the quarter. The second term saw St Kevins have eleven scoring shots at goal, only two of which were converted as majors. Free running, attacking football was played by SKOB the ground over, as Carey were virtually unable to touch the ball. Inaccuracy would damage the St Kevins game ultimately, marring what was otherwise an excellent quarter. As they kept the Panthers to only one behind for the term, this was SKOB’s chance to stamp their mark on the game, however they just couldn’t deliver the blows. St Kevins came out frenetically after the main break, out running Carey and managing the first two goals to be kicked to the Glen Huntly Road end that drew scores level. This intense period play looked set to help SKOB on thepath to victory as we approached time on, Carey were struggling. However the Panthers were not done with and they pounced with three quick-fire goals that changed the momentum of the game completely. Carey won all the contested ball, and dominated clearances. A further two goals meant five goals for the quarter and SKOB instantly looked deflated 4
Old Carey’s pressure defined the hearty win, setting up success all over the ground. While it meant Carey won more inside contested ball, and dominated clearances, it also stressed the opposition, who at times appeared anxious and rushed; especially in the forward-line where fumbles, dropped marks, poorly executed passes and missed shots were painfully common. The Panthers proved themselves as worthy Grand Final competitors with this win, putting to bed fears that a successful season, most of spend at second position on the ladder might have been crumbling after SKOB usurped the envied position in round 18. Cam Howat starred in the win, racking up possessions and kicking a goal trademark goal from beyond 50m, Tom Roach and Joel Rice led the inside pressure charge for the Panther’s midfield, Lachlan McQueen-Miscamble was important in defence and Ryan Bongetti’s job on Steve Salopek and Ben Dowd interchangeably meant that they had little influence on the game. Many of the Willows at TH King will truly be weeping on the back of this loss. Another campaign where SKOB missed promotion to Premier and relinquished the double chance, I think St Kevins can take many positives from a strong season. With a young side and dynamic style of running game, St Kevins’ opportunity for finals success is beginning, rather than ending in the mind of this observer, and they will be back stronger and with even hungrier next season. This week of course sees the culmination of the Premier B season in the Grand Final at Sportscover Arena on Sunday. University Blues certainly go in favourites, after a stellar season and striking win in their first final. The week off will most likely advantage the Students, but in light of some odd losses to the likes of Old Ivanhoe and Caulfield during the season proper, perhaps a week off could disrupt the Blues’ momentum? Old Carey need to be hoping for such a turn of luck, as with Uni Blues at full strength, it is almost impossible to tip against them.
Rippon and co, but this looks to be the only aspect of the game Carey can win. With an explosive forward-line that relies on no one player, and a steadfast defence that is one of the best in Amateur footy full stop; Uni Blues are too strong an outfit overall for the Panthers to slay. Taking nothing away from Carey, who’s last two wins have demonstrated a great amount of bravery, grit and skill, the Blues have been by far the better team all season and this game is theirs to lose. Carey will need to recreate the efforts of Steven Bradbury if they are to be a chance in this game. I’m tipping Uni Blues by six goals.
It does appear possible that the likes of Howat, Rice, Roach, Bongetti and Freemantle could win the midfield battle over Summers, Mugavin,

VULTURES SOAR INTO GRAND FINAL The Parkdale Vultures have booked themselves a date with the Hampton Rovers in this weekend’s Premier C Grand Final. The Vultures were able to hold Marcellin at bay on Saturday in the Preliminary Final, dictating the play from start to finish, leading at every change to win by 17 points at Casey Fields. The win has also secured the Vultures with a spot in Premier B for next season, a year after they were relegated. Meanwhile the Eagles were left to lament another disappointing finals campaign, slumping to their third straight exit in as many years. Despite being the benchmark all year, they couldn’t produce their best football when it mattered most. Aside from the second quarter, spectators weren’t treated to an overly free flowing game of football. Both sides struggled to penetrate the oppositions defence with limited scoring opportunities coming in the second half. Particularly in the second half, a number of stoppages ensued, both teams struggling to break free from the congestion. The Vultures set the tone from the outset as they made the early running, peppering the goals with Lopo and Boland lively across half forward. It was clear the Vultures were out to target Marcellin playmaker Jarrod Carlson, every opportunity they had they got stuck into him, at one stoppage three players made a bee line for him. It must have worked with Carlson relatively well held throughout the day. Both defensive units were on top early. Both sides rebounding the ball out of defence with relative ease. Chapman was nullifying the influence of Bolger and Bolger’s miss from 20 metres out almost directly in front painted a picture of things to come. The second term was played in a distinctly different style to the other three as the floodgates opened with both teams going on the attack. With only 16 goals scored on the day, a staggering 10 came in the second term, both sides kicking five apiece. Lopo and Sullivan joined the frenzy up forward for Parkdale kicking two each, enjoying some excellent delivery. Marcellin knew they’d have to lift their intensity if they were to get back in the 6
contest. They applied a series of strong tackles having a ripple effect throughout the team, as each player lifted their workrate. McPherson had two for the term and a Viney snap on the stroke of half time had the Eagles within striking distance. Trailing by eight points at the main break the Eagles would need to produce a stellar premiership quarter. But they failed. Parkdale’s defence, led by Chapman and Price refused to allow the Eagles any space, intercepting anything that came their way. In an error riddled quarter, mainly brought about by relentless pressure from both sides, turnovers were at a premium. The only player on the ground who could penetrate the goals was Tim Boland whose two goals in the term were crucial, and ultimately the difference in the outcome of the game. Bolger’s first goal four minutes into the final term gave Marcellin renewed hope and minutes later a brilliant solo effort from Gasparini had the Eagles within 13 points. Marcellin’s endeavor couldn’t be questioned but time was against them. However, at the other end of the ground, Boland took off where he left off in the third, gathering countless possessions and almost nailing the final dagger into Marcellin on several occasions. Having missed two shots previously Boland’s third attempt on goal was enough to sink Marcellin, sealing a memorable Vulture victory. It was fitting that Boland had the final say, the exclamation mark on a best on ground display. As the siren rang the scene of players strewn across the ground told vastly different stories. Their emotions palpable. A sea of Marcellin players were hunched over in despair, trying to fathom how they’d fallen short again. On the other side of the spectrum the Parkdale players pumped their fists in the air in utter jubilation, embracing one another, trying to comprehend the thought of playing in a Grand Final. GRAND FINAL PREVIEW After the Vultures 85 point round one hiding at the hands of the Hampton Rovers little did they think they would meet again 5 months later, in a Grand Final. But it’s a testament to the resolve of this Vultures outfit. It hasn’t been an easy road for the Vultures, but they appear unfazed. The Rovers have had the luxury of the week off, however as we all know sometimes it can be to a side’s detriment, as they have lacked a genuine hit out in the lead up to the Grand Final. Conversely the Vultures have been forced to work hard in their two finals, and perhaps fatigue could be a factor as the game wears on. The Vultures go into match with the belief that they can beat the Rovers. In round 11, the second meeting between these two sides, the Vultures dismantled the Rovers by 70 points. I’m always looking for a bit of value whenever I’m at the races, and I love seeing an underdog prevail. The Vultures head into Saturdays clash as outsiders and I think they can push the Rovers all the way, but may fall just short.

VAFA COMMUNITY MOURNS THERRY PENOLA’S RICKY BANNISTER The VAFA Board, Staff and the entire VAFA community extend their deepest condolences to the Bannister family and the Therry Penola Football Club on hearing the sad news that favourite son Ricky Bannister passed late last week. The injury Ricky sustained created numerous challenges for him and he had been battling a number of health related issues since the accident. True to his character, Ricky fought hard but eventually the battle became too great, even for him.
He is now at peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with Emily and William as well as Wayne and Maureen, Corey, Shaun, Jordan, Jess and Jarrod in these sad times. The Therry Penola seniors had a magnificent win on Sunday in their Division 1 preliminary finals with Ricky’s two younger brothers, Corey and Jarrod playing key roles in helping the Lions to back to back promotions and Grand Final appearances.

Congratulations to St Kevin’s PATRICK AUGHTON – Patrick or ‘Woosh’ is the only remaining player from the 2004 SKOB Premiership team. 10 years later he has the chance at another premiership in his 200th game. Woosh is a stalwart, an amiable embodiment of SKOB culture. Finishing at the College in 2001, he has played a vital role at SKOB since. A part of the 2004 and 2007 premiership teams, he also captained the Reserves in 2005. Woosh’s services to SKOB are outstanding. It would be a fitting result for the Reserves to secure a premiership in his milestone game.

THERRY SECURE REMATCH As they did in 2013, Therry Penola has taken the long road to the big dance, ensuring a rematch with their semi-final combatant Williamstown CYMS in the Grand Final. The Lions knocked off Old Geelong by 19-points having held a marginal lead at every change. It was an emotional day and one where all in attendance felt for Therry Penola and their star forwards Corey and Jarrod Bannister at the news that their brother Ricky had lost his battle with his debilitating injuries and died a few days earlier. For Therry Penola their victory guarantees backto-back promotions, but Sunday at Garvey Oval will determine if back-to-back premierships will travel with them into Premier C.
second, gave Therry a 14-point lead heading into the first break.
PRELIMINARY FINAL REVIEW
The OG’s chances were in the balance in the third and initial signs kept them alive with two quick goals from Scott Howard and Will Sharp revived proceedings. Old Geelong players and supporters began to get antsy as decisions weren’t going there way and the Oggers blew a chance to pull the margin to just 12-points. Jarrod Bannister started to run rampant in the forward 50 but could not add to his three goal tally .The rambunctious crowd finally got a breather as three-quarter time sounded with Therry leading 10.13-73 to 8.8-55.
Therry Penola drew first blood with Michael Pell slotting the opener as some curious Williamstown CYMS bystanders curiously watched on from the stands. Old Geelong didn’t linger on their reply with Vice Captain, Andy Leahy spreading well and running into the forward 50 unmarked and kicking the OG’s first. Early on the OG’s appeared on song and weren’t intimidated by Therry, playing physically inside and providing strong outside run. Both seemingly struggled hitting targets and splitting the middle when in goal kicking range. That was until Matt Costello broke the deadlock after a good bit of play and a great smother by Ben Ratcliffe. The OG’s pressure stuck fat throughout the first term causing Therry to over possess, with Rupert Kemp on the receiving end and striding into an open goal. Two late first quarter goals, including Pell’s
16
Old Geelong’s Aaron Bird capitalised from Therry’s dropped mark and missed tackle to kick the first of what became a shoot-out quarter. The two sides went goal for goal as the Bannister’s, Corey and Jarrod, got involved ending the half with five between them while big man Josh Hoevenaars kicked two at the other end. The OG’s appeared nervous late in the term sending Captain, Colby O’Brien to sit in the whole at stoppages in the defensive half. The negative measures were all but ineffective as Corey ran back with the flight and into an open goal as the margin skipped out to four goals by halftime.
Football’s always been about taking your chances, and Therry missed theirs to bury the OG’s early. Callum Wood made them pay further, kicking the goal and reducing the deficit to two goals. Matt Costello answered with a crumbing goal and blasting it into an unguarded goal, while Jarrod Bannister kicked his fourth and paid homage to his late brother, Ricky, kissing the armband in a beautiful moment. That goal

his fifth capped off the game as a contest. Jarrod Bannister’s five goals and Corey’s two highlighed an emotional day for the Bannister family, their friends and the club, as the boys honoured Ricky’s memory on the field in a manner that deserves admiration.
GRAND FINAL PREVIEW The top two remain. The best Division 1 has to offer, Williamstown CYMS and Therry Penola survived the gruelling home-and-away season and now face off for the fourth and final time in 2014 to claim the section’s title. The CY’s proved in the 2nd Semi-Final, almost unbelievably, they could dominate the Lions. Williamstown come off the week’s rest and having beaten Therry a fortnight ago, surely has them the favourites? The CY’s forward line of Jack Gray and Matt John match up well against Therry’s less-agile backmen. The two kicked four apiece two weeks ago and will again create anxious moments for those paired against them alone in the 50.
DIVISION 1
Or is Therry Penola’s 18-1 reign throughout the year too hard to dismiss? From the Bannister’s to the Egglestone’s and all the class in-between there is serious talent that is difficult to suppress. Therry’s advantage is any one if these players can get off the chain and cause damage. If Jarrod Egglestone or Matt Lyons do so, the CY’s midfield will struggle. If it’s Paul Edwards or Brock Egglestone their forwards will. And if it’s the Bannister brothers, the score will certainly be lopsided. That being said, Therry Penola’s calibre sways the tip in their favour. Predicting the minor premiers to claim the silverware and deserved back to back flags by three goals.

@BrentyMann
THERE’S NO TOMORROW So now it’s down to two. The best performed sides of 2014 and the two most deserving. It is one feat to make the finals; it’s a whole different feat to perform in them. The pressure rises, not just on the barometer, but around the footy as well. The time and space enjoyed by some players during the year, is reduced to playing in a phone-box. It’s about winning critical one-on-ones. Controlling the ball offensively and being fanatical defensively, matches are defined by a tackle; a shepherd; a spoil or a mere Matthew Scarlett toepoke on the ball. The little things count more than ever. Role players are viewed as heroes, while stars are revered as legends. Reputations are enhanced or diminished with a single act. Its trench warfare and the sides willing to scrap and fight to the death generally succeed. The player that’s willing to put their head over the ball, to put their body in places it shouldn’t be and sacrifice their welfare are treasured. This is why players and coaches alike put the extra yards in over the arduous summer months. Games like this are what drives players during those biting nights at training and what keeps players coming back, year after year. The quest for success is what drives athletes of all sports, it’s embedded and until achieved a senses of unfinished business lingers. It stays with coaches and players as they vow to improve over the offseason, and to conquer that final hurdle next year. In Grand Finals, structures and order that coaches abide by get thrown out the window and chaos ensues. Glory can hinge on a single act, and elation be smothered by misery. After losing to St Mary’s Salesian a week prior, Kew’s fate rest in its own hands, but Old Eltham were not going to lie down. The Turtles beat the Bears earlier in the year, and after dismantling Old Paradians their confidence was sky high. Their physicality and intent was evident from the start, a trait which they sustained for the entire match. The jumped the Bears, and even after conceding the first goal, the Turtles had the better of the
18
opening term. The Bears adjusted their approach to suit the conditions in the second and reversed and one goal deficit into a one goal lead at the main change. The Turtles were not going to go quietly and came out firing in the third. In a low scoring affair, their hardness around the footy allowed them to stay in the contest and found themselves up by three points at ¾ time. The final quarter was set-up for a match-winner. Someone to drag their team on their back and carry them over the line. A touch of brilliance can turn a final in your favour and break the hearts and backs of the opposition. Bears’ spearhead Andrew Brazzale did just that. He showed last year and again during this year that he’s a “big game” player and his performance on the weekend was nothing short of outstanding. Even though he was well held for most of the day, he shone like a beacon and lit up the last quarter. Kew kicked five goals to two in the last and secured victory by 14 points. Brazzale’s seven goal haul led the Bears into their second successive Grand Final and with that promotion into Div 1 in 2015. For Old Eltham they will be bitterly disappointed, but weren’t disgraced by any stretch. They gave everything they had but sometimes class is simply intangible. After winning their first final in sometime they’ll hit the summer months with a steely resolve and a hunger for redemption. How much can we take away from two weeks ago? St Mary’s Salesian has the form side of the second half of the year but were 0–2 against Kew before their semi-final encounter. They went into that clash on top of their game with redemption in mind. The fact they hadn’t beaten the Bears was that one glitch in their year to date. Question marks still lingered about their ability to perform away from home, and whether Kew had their measure...well they put pay to both. They won that clash with upmost ease as Kew barely

gave a whimper. Did they get the Bears on a bad day or are they peaking at the right time of year as the Bears begin to wane. These questions will be answered at 5pm as one team will be jubilant in celebration as the other suffers in anguish. The debate about whether it’s an advantage to have the week off to rest and recuperate is or whether the team that gets to the big dance the long way having felt defeat already against their opponents will be answered as well. Kew and St Mary’s both play a similar style, have similar structures and will know each other inside out. In grand finals there’s also the opportunity to be unpredictable and throw a “spanner in the works”, to change up structurally to try and gain the upper-hand. Then again, being predictable is what good sides do. I’m of the opinion that both Jess Sinclair and Ian Aitken will be about sticking to the tried the tested. The ease at which St Mary’s Salesian won the semi may be just the mental edge they need to get over the line. Or Kew may have learnt the lessons needed to come back from adversity and achieve back-to-back glory, my tip, Kew by 3 points DIVISION 2 — TIPS IN BOLD St Mary’s Salesian v Kew

DRAMA IN DIVISION 3 The Northern Blues earned their second consecutive VAFA Grand Final berth and with that promotion on Saturday by defeating Emmaus St Leos by one-point in a thrilling contest at Parade College’s Garvey Oval. Emotions soared in the first against second affair as the jubilant Blues celebrated their victory post-siren while Alan Sutherland’s team were left to ponder their straight sets elimination from the Division 3 finals. The Animal’s jumped the Blues’ early in the contest, kicking the first four goals of the game courtesy of strong presenting across half-forward from Ryan Harding and Nathan Baranello. Some clever work at the stoppages from Northern’s Tony Vuwai and Matthew Holmes allowed the Blues to claw their way back into the match, eventually steadying to control the tempo and take an eight-point lead into half-time. Inspired play from Daniel Hill (three goals) saw momentum swing back in favour of the Animal’s after the major break, with Leo Glover providing penetrating run and carry from halfback. The Blues then stunned the Animal’s by kicking two quick-fire goals to begin the final quarter, forcing Alan Sutherland to shift Harding from forward to defence and halt the run of play. Pressure continued to build on Emmaus as they failed to capitalise on a series of half-chances in their bid to overturn their onepoint deficit. Northern stubbornly held onto that slender lead in a heart-wrenching final five minutes and clenched victory. Emmaus’ captain Paul Baranello (3 goals) did his utmost to will his side to win, nailing a left-footed last quarter goal from a stoppage to compliment an impressive highlight reel. 20
Northern co-captain Dean Calcedo provided his team with an influence equal to the opposition captain, dancing around his opponents with ease off half-back to continue his fantastic finals campaign. Team of the year defender Reed Jepson proved his credentials in the backline by holding the competition’s leading goal-kicker Christopher Beluszar to just two majors. Jordan Hull and Olsen Clark assisted Jepson admirably in the backline, thwarting Emmaus’ scoring opportunities using a team-first mentality. Nic Robin and Tom Thorn were among the best players in the Animals final clash for 2014. Richmond Central joined the Northern Blues in Division 2 next season and the Grand Final on Saturday by notching up their seventh consecutive victory in a nine-point win over Aquinas at Meade Reserve, Clayton. The Bloods held an 11-point advantage over the Snakes at the quarter time interval, however Richmond won every quarter from that point forward to slowly overcome Aquinas on the afternoon. Aquinas were in a good position to win the match midway through the third term, before two late goals for Richmond before three quarter time gifted the Snakes the momentum. Richmond Central took complete control of the match in the final quarter, registering just two goals from their 15 final quarter scoring shots. Aquinas could only manage three shots on goal in the last term as their spot in the grand final slowly drifted away. Ricky Costanzo and Karl Schoenmaekers were pivotal for the Snakes, accumulating plenty of possessions to be among Richmond’s best players in the match. Woody Bucci was the star of the show for Richmond, kicking five of their 11-goals for the contest in a clinical display. Outside of

Bucci, six individual goal-scorers assisted the Snakes, including Thomas Thurwood and Sam Brown. For Aquinas, captain Leigh Toomey and Matthew Kershaw were both gallant in defeat from their respective positions. Joseph and Nicholas Morrison-Storey were also at their consistent best, rebounding well across halfback for a large portion of the match. The game was only the second time the two sides have met this season.
PREVIEW In a grand final match-up a scribe could only dream of, the Northern Blues will need to overcome their bogey side Richmond Central to sketch their name in VAFA folklore and earn back-to-back premierships. Northern suffered just four defeats throughout season 2014, two of which came at the hands of the Snakes in rounds 3 and 14 respectively. While The Blues are currently riding the high of a six game
DIVISION 3
Richmond’s team of the year ruckman Dane Roy was named as the second best player in both of their meetings against the Blues. Woody Bucci and Luke Carland have been the Snakes main threat in front of goal, combining for ten goals across those two contests. For the Blues, Damon Marcon’s five goal haul in Round 14 will give the Snakes plenty to think about alongside the form of rebounding defender Daniel Wakim in defensive fifty. The elements of run and carry should be in full effect at the spacious Garvey Oval for Northern, while the in-and-under style of finals football should favour the maturebodied Richmond. Get a good vantage point from the boundary line because this game is set to be a beauty.

DIVISION 4

GRAND FINAL BATTLE OF THE BIRDS Kim and Kanye are in the country, there’s another Royal Baby on the way and saucy celebrity photo’s have been leaked from the cloud, but the biggest story this week is that the Division 4 Grand Final will be a battle of the birds. The two sides that have set the standard for Division 4 throughout the 2014 season, Hawthorn and West Brunswick, are set to slug it out for Premiership glory at Meade Reserve this Saturday. An incredible first season in the VAFA came to a close for Canterbury after they fizzled out in the final term. Whilst they are bound to be disappointed with the way they finished off their campaign, they have to be happy with the way they went about the season. Their exciting brand of football has been a talking point in Division 4 this year. A top four finish in their first season is a big tick for the Cobras, but a promotion to Division 3 will have to wait for at least another twelve months. A tightly contested opening to the game saw Canterbury take the lead into the first break. The lead changed hands but it was still an arm wrestle at the main interval. West Brunswick knew the Cobras were going to burst out of the blocks, just like they have for most of the season, however they felt confident that if they were in the mix at half time they would be able to outlast their opposition. Much to West Brunswick’s surprise, Canterbury kept coming in the third quarter and stole the lead heading into the final term. Throughout the Cobra onslaught, gallant defensive efforts from Ralph Tozel, Jake Taylor, Warwick Baker and team of the year back pocket Corey Bull weathered the storm for the Pies. The Cobras were the far better side in the third quarter, but as has been the case in weeks gone by inaccurate kicking and missed opportunities would come back to bite them late in the game. The example set from the West Brunswick backmen gave the rest of the side a platform to build off in the final term. A renewed composure and obvious hunger to extend their season by another week saw the Pies take their game to 22

another level in the last quarter. Tighter structure and smarter decision making through the middle of the ground saw the ball find its way towards Jack Nulty and Pat Carrol who both kicked steadying goals. At the other end of the ground, the Cobras were strangled, only able to register one score for the quarter, a behind. At the final siren, it was West Brunswick the victors by a comfortable margin. Canterbury have played a brand of football all season that can prove to be extremely damaging, but also gives the opposition a chance. On this occasion West Brunswick’s consistent, measured approach ensured that they took their chance when it presented. The Pies’ issue when meeting the Hawks has been an inability to play out four quarters. In the last two weeks however, they have done exactly that. They have every right to feel confident heading Whilst West Brunswick haven’t beaten the high flying Hawks this season, they have drawn the margin closer each time they have played them. Their intensity in week one of the finals was impressive and served as a reminder to Hawthorn that Premiership glory is far from a certainty for them. The question will be whether the Pies can produce another competitive display having involved themselves in two tight contests over the past two weekends. By the same token, perhaps a week off has disturbed the momentum of the Hawks who have been unstoppable this season and will be desperate to ensure their record remains unblemished. That said it would take a brave punter to bet against Luke Mather’s boys in this week’s Grand Final. Eight team of the year members in key positions all across the ground and unrivalled depth in their club would suggest that the silverware is set to make its way into the Hawks nest this weekend. improving all year and I’m expecting them to make a good contest of this one. Their defenders are in solid form at the right time of the year and they look to be the competition’s only defensive unit who are a realistic chance of keeping

The afternoon is set to be a blockbuster with both sides’ reserves facing off in their Grand Final in the curtain raiser. In the big dance, I’m tipping Hawthorn by 12 points.

CLUB WAREHOUSE RISING STAR 2014 RISING STAR WINNER – ANTHONY SCOTT – OLD TRINITY Congratulations to Anthony Scott from Old Trinity who is the winner of 2014 VAFA Club Warehouse Rising Star. Scott, 19, beat off stiff competition from a number of talented youngsters in their first year of VAFA football. He was voted as the winner by a panel for his consistent season playing on the wing for Old Trinity. Scott is the second player from Old Trinity to win the Rising Star award after his current skipper Brendan Iezzi won the award in 2007. Scott played every game in his first year at Old Trinity having been a member of the first XVIII at the school where the school team won one and lost one AGS Grand Final. Whilst performing consistently over the course of the season – he was named in Old Trinity’s best on six occasions, Scott was recognised for his outstanding play in a number of matches, his classy left foot finishing seeing him feature on the highlight reel a number of times. Scott also played 8 games at the Oakleigh Chargers last year and upon his arrival at Old Trinity in the preseason he immediately impressed all with his silky skills and hardness at the contest. Scott’s early season form saw him play well in Old Trinity’s senior practice matches before being selected for his debut in round 1 against St Bernard’s where he played well and made a solid contribution to the win. Scott was exceptional on the wide wings of Sportscover Arena against Old Xaverians in round 2, running both ways to win plenty of possessions and continued to be hard at the contest and demonstrated his clean skills when in space. It was this performance that won him the nomination for the Club Warehouse Rising Star Award. When not playing football in the green and gold, Anthony is studying Arts at THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2014
Melbourne University. Once again from everyone at the VAFA and Club Warehouse congratulate Anthony Scott on winning the 2014 Rising Star Award. Scott will be presented with his award at the Woodrow Medal and VAFA Awards Night next Wednesday at Crown.

FINALS HISTORY 5 YEARS AGO – 2009 In D1 Section Rupertswood proved conclusively they were the best team with a win over a gallant Fitzroy, 12.18 to 9.11. The John Manton Medallist, Matt McPhee ran all day and fully deserved the best on ground award in the GF. Rupertswood’s 4.9 could well have sewn the game up at quarter time but Fitzroy were still in the game at half time although trailing by 22 points. In D2 it was a bit of an upset as Williamstown defeated the favourites, Peninsula 15.9 to 9.18. Peninsula did well in the first term to score 2.2 against the wind to Willy’s 6.4 and at three quarter time the Pirates were only 2 goals down. It was a disaster for Peninsula with the wind in the last with only 8 behinds whereas Williamstown kicked 3.4 to deservedly take the title. Bentleigh won the D3 title against St Mary’s Salesian 13.23 to 10.18 and the poor shooting for goal was not surprising in the hot and windy conditions quite foreign to September in Melbourne. Bentleigh also won the reserve’s’ title. 10 YEARS AGO – 2004 MHSOB took out the C Section premiership with a resounding victory over Caulfield Grammarians, 14.12 to 6.11. MHSOB led from start to finish, holding the strong Caulfield forward line in check. Best: Campbell, Hogan, Svirskis, Bamert (4), Cassell, Limbrick (MHSOB) and Widjaja, Frater, Fallu, B Sinclair, Will, Carboni (CG). Uni Blacks’ D1 Section GF win was well deserved, 15.7 to Banyule 9.5. Barry Hickey, D1 scribe, reminded us it was only the 4th time in D-D1 Section that a team had gone through undefeated. Double celebrations followed with their reserves also winning the flag. Best: M Kempton, Shaw, P Kempton, A Costello, S Price, Scarlett (Blacks) Williams, Gayfer, Wise, Taylor, Cantwell, Mutton (Banyule). The Blacks’ Bryce Shaw was the John Manton Medallist for his BOG performance. Bulleen Temp won the D2 GF, 10.11 over Old Carey 4.8. Best: Chivers, Tehan, Hare, Pietryk, Clarke, Schneider (BT) and Everett, Trumbell, 42
Rossignolo, Parton, Munro, Campbell (OC). Greg Chivers (BT) was the Anthony Fellows Medallist.
20 YEARS AGO – 1994 Glenhuntly won the E Section flag over St John’s OC 12.6 to 8.7. Best Rafferty, Miller, Turner, Withers, Hill (6), Richards (Glenhuntly) and Rachelle, Back, Koppens, La Brooy (StJohns). Yarra Valley OB 16.10 were too strong for Oakleigh (12.9) in F Section and deserved their premiership. Best: Habben, M Simpson (7), B Simpson (YValley) and Motis, Nikakis, Cloke (Oakleigh). 30 YEARS AGO – 1984 The F Section Grand Final saw a runaway win by Williamstown CYMS over Preston MBOB 19.10 to 11.17. Best: Elliott (8), Cannon, Wade, Van Der Peet, Loxton (W) and Carey, Thompson, Hepburn (3), Pallini (P). 40 Years Ago – 1974 The E Section Grand final was a terrific contest with Fawkner coming from behind to defeat Old Geelong by the narrowest of margins 10.17 to 10.16. Best: M Stapleton, M Majerczak, G McMahon, (F) and Paton, Welbye, Hope (OG).
60 YEARS AGO – 1954 Parkside went through the season undefeated to win the C Section Grand Final over Old Xaverians 15.19 to 8.12. Parkside had been C Section runners-up twice before (1946 & 1951) and this season’s result was their highest to date in the VAFA. Teachers’ College won the D Section GF 5.10 to Fairfield 4.9. This was Teachers College’s best effort since their B Section win 1935! 80 YEARS AGO – 1934 Old Scotch met Uni Blacks in the A Section final. Despite Scotch’s ascendancy during the season, the Blacks had gained confidence from their semi final win against Geelong and went on to beat Old Scotch 21.12 to 8.6. The inclement weather conditions were not conducive to freerunning football but the Blacks adapted much better. Scotch were hoping for better conditions the following week as they took up their right to challenge! E.S & A Bank’s more accurate kicking was the main reason for their B Grade premiership against West Brunswick, 10.8 to 6.13. Ormond won the C Grade Grand Final 15.20 against North Old Boys 8.3. St Bernard’s meet Bernard’s and Old Xaverians St Kevins on Sunday in the Grand Final. Woods, have played some absolute Wade and Considine were awesome and were belters over the past two integral to getting the Snowdogs across the seasons and this game was no line. The Xavs can hold their heads high, they exception. St Bernard’s started well kicking four were gallant and had a terrific year, and Coach goals in the first to the Xavs two and they kept Callinan had them well drilled and they will be that margin until the third. Then the fighting Old Xavs got back into the contest through the capable of big things in 2015. The Grand Final usual suspects in Cannon, Hannan, Midgely and has the makings of a classic, both have had Hess and were down by only four points with good wins against one another this year and at 6 minutes to play in the final term. It was an Trevor Barker we can look forward to another enthralling contest that lived up to preliminary enthralling contest. My tip for the big one? final hype. It’s Trinity with the wood over and it inevitably cost them. Uni Blues after winning both encounters during It’s hard to go past Trinity’s Alex Polidoros when the regular season. Despite this, Uni Blues will be you’re looking for the difference between the extremely confident and the week off will help two sides. He finished with 6 goals and looked immensely.

Preliminary finals are notoriously tight matches however the U19 Section 3 prelim was anything but. Marcellin took on Williamstown CYMS in the preliminary final to decide who would progress into the Grand Final, setting a date for Old Ivanhoe who were resting up. On a picture perfect day in Melbourne, Marcellin got the better start of the two teams getting a 5-goal head break in the first quarter and Williamstown could not cut the deficit for the rest of the game, going down by 31 points. Kicking for goal was Williamstown’s downfall, kicking 6.11 44
compared to Marcellin who kicked 12.6. Burns was the leading scorer for the day kicking 6 for the Eagles while Di Roberto kicked 3 and for Williamstown Ebinger kicked 3 and Christakakis kicked 2. Jones for Marcellin put in a great showing all day and played a great finals game, whilst Dawson for Williamstown was best on for his team. Now we turn attention to a great Grand Final with Marcellin taking on Old Ivanhoe. I would just like to congratulate all teams on the 2014 season it has been great to be able to write on such a great under 19’s competition. I wish the best of luck to both teams on the weekend and may the best team win. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2014

It was anyone’s game in the Preliminary Final between Wyndham Suns and St Bernard’s, but it was St Bernard’s who won by 36 points after a solid second half. St Bernard’s started off slow, kicking just one goal in the first quarter, while Wyndham managed to kick four goals straight. After a good second quarter from St Bernard’s, the score was just one point the difference at half time. With important contributions from Isaacs, McNicol and Connelly - who kicked three goals - they managed to come out well on top after racing away in the final U19 South with Anna O’Donnell
It was Hampton Rovers who dampened any hopes that Oakleigh had of winning another junior premiership after beating them by 59 points. The Krushers had a nightmare of a game. The game looked relatively in the balance at half time, being only eight points different at the break - but it was all downhill for Oakleigh from thereon in. Oakleigh failed to convert a single goal in the second half of the game, with Benoiton being Oakleigh’s only goalkicker, kicking four for the day. Eight of the Rovers’ side contributed to their goal

term. Firth and Notaro slotted three goals for St Bernard’s, while Wilson and Galley also conjured three for the Suns, and were among their most notable performers on the day. Although Wyndham were unable to get across the line to be in the running to win a premiership in their first year under the Wyngham name, they ought to be congratulated on a stellar season, winning a total of eleven games for the year. St Bernard’s will be now be getting prepared for what will prove to be a big game against Ivanhoe this weekend and will look to upset the top side at a neutral Trevor Barker Oval on Sunday, despite being unable to beat them this season. @annaod_
tally, while Fisher and Hodges were among the finest performed in their second final. After only losing three games for the year, Oakleigh will be dampened by a disappointing end to what has been a commendable season. Hampton have come off a solid run of nine wins and will be fired up after working hard in the latter half season to do enough to make the Grand Final from fourth position. Hampton Rovers will play Ormond this Saturday in a local grudge match. Rovers will hope to trouble Ormond who have sailed through to the final in search of a cherished premiership.

UMPIRES
Steve McCarthy & Kit Harvey
GRAND FINAL FEVER It’s that time of year again, the time teams fight to be part of from day one of the off-season – Grand Final week. Players fight tooth and nail from Round 1 for a chance to be part of the action. Like Christmas and the opening session of the Boxing Day Test, it only happens once a year. It’s an honour to be selected to officiate a Grand Final at any level. Being such a large football competition we are fortunate to be able appoint such a large number of umpires to those grand finals. To the men and women running around in green this weekend – good luck and run well. On behalf of all of us at the VAFA Umpires’ Association, we’d like to wish all players, coaches, officials and fans the very best for the big day, including those involved in the Premier preliminary final. Take it all in and have a great time. For those who are not officiating this weekend, work hard over summer, present yourself at pre-season and get into it again. Remember, you may not be there on the last day of the footy season, but you ARE part of the team. The VAFAUA team, and the part every single umpire plays is important and we looking forward to your return in 2015. Too late to gain more brownie points but we would obviously like to thank our dedicated coaches and observers who assist so much with our umpiring development throughout the year. Of course a big thank you to Benny and Olivia in at VAFA HQ for their support and also to the VAFA itself (especially for Umpires Round). Proudly supported by
East Malvern Community Bank®Branch 300 Waverley Road, East Malvern, phone 9563 6044

LAWS OF THE GAME QUIZ LAST WEEK’S QUESTION: What approximate height do umpires try to throw the ball up?
The correct answer was OPTION C: 5 metres.
THIS WEEK’S QUESTION: What is the spirit of the law in relation to marking and ruck contests? What approximate height do umpires try to throw the ball up? a) The player whose sole objective is to contest the ruck/marking contest shall be permitted to do so. b) Players who contest the ruck/marking contest fairly and without the intention of injuring an opponent shall be permitted to do so. c) Players who deliberately remove their eyes from the football shall have a freekick paid against them. d) The player who marks/taps the ball first shall be allowed to do so in any fashion, because they won the ball.
MOST TRAVELLED We mentioned a few weeks ago that we’d like some of the “old-timers” to tell us how many VAFA clubs past and present they’d umpired over their careers. A couple of notable mentions to Anthony Simpson with 76 and Macca with 86, but the winner, after umpiring Northern Blues for the first time a couple of weeks ago is legendary goal umpire and ex-field umpire Kevin (Chillie) Segota with 103. Great service to the VAFA over such a long period of time! UMPIRE OF THE YEAR Who will it be this year? Can Merv go back-toback? Will Droppy or Rusty add a second one to the trophy cabinet? Or maybe one of the young guns or Prez Silfo will step up. The Most Promising Umpire was picked up by Ollie Bell last year, but it’s a pretty big field this year with a quite a number being worthy winners. We’ll find out on next Wednesday night at Crown at the Woodrow Medal and VAFA Awards Night. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2014

SNOWDOGS SHINE! As Melbourne produced the goods weatherwise last Saturday, a large crowd ventured to Ted Ajani Reserve to take in the Colts prelim. Despite the 9.20am start, both teams were up and about early. Both St Bernards and Westbourne Grammarians had been consistent sides all year, but it was the Warriors who took the chocolates on both occasions during the season by 7 and 23 points respectively. St Bernard’s started the match well and were dominant all around the ground as they took a 15 point lead into quarter time. The second quarter was much the same, as the Snowdogs extended their lead to 27 points by the main break. After half time, the tide started to turn and favour the Warriors. Despite their inaccurate goal kicking (4.7) they outscored their opponents and reduced the margin back to 30 points by the last change, the Warriors were still in the hunt. It wasn’t meant to be however, as St Bernards continued their dominance and were victorious by 28 points. Snowdog Max Jaggard finished with four, whilst Pat O’Brien was best for the Warriors in the loss.
So, it comes down to this, the Grand Final between the two best teams all year in Mazenod and St Bernards. Do Mazenod have a slight advantage after their week off to refresh and rest their bodies? Or are St Bernard’s favourites after their good win last week? I guess only time will tell. I believe the week off will work wonders for Mazenod and they will be my selection. PRELIMINARY FINAL PREVIEW The temptation is always to jump on the winning team from the week before when making a selection for the preliminary final. Collegians were magnificent whilst St Bernard’s were poor. However we also forget just how often the beaten second semi finalist gets back up off the canvass and wins. After all they had earned the right to second spot by virtue of their form in the home and away season.
might be waiting another year. Collegians to win by 18.
St Bernard’s were by no means at their best last week, so there is plenty of upside for them. St Bernard’s also beat Collegians on both occasions this year. Therefore the chips are stacked in their corner. There were also a couple of potential options running around in the St Bernard’s twos like Bevanda and Wall that could be looked at this week, that would certainly strengthen the Snowdogs. Logic also says that St Bernard’s will be stung by last week and there is no doubting Anthony Rock’s credentials at this time of the year. Despite all this Collegians still feel right. The Collegians lineup has become more consistent in the past two months than any time since their 2012 premierships year. They have been regulars at Sportscover Arena in recent seasons too and St Bernard’s did look lost at times on the wider expanses of headquarters. Also, annectdotally at least, it seems Sportscover Arena is slightly the harder surface, so perhaps recovery has been easier on the Lions bodies this week. Taft is a difficult match up and, as previously mentioned, is in sensational form. Since the VAFA reduced the Premier Section finals series to a three week series, no team from the 1st semi final has won through to the decider on a six day break. This time, with the VAFA scheduling both semi finals on the same day, Collegians come into the match with the same preparation as St Bernard’s. A few months ago I almost wrote that this season will see the first Premier Grand Final since 2004 when none of Collegians, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers or Old Xaverians featured, alas I think we 58
