EARLY ANALYSIS It may be early on in the season but I feel that Round 4 the right time to review your section and get a good grip of where your club is situated. I was talking this morning (Tuesday) to one VAFA veteran with over 50 years experience in the VAFA and he believes that there are only three teams in his club’s section capable of winning the premiership. Maybe that’s an early call but there seems to be some merit in his statement. On analysing the ladders, three distinct groups appear. There are the teams that have either won every game or dropped only one are well placed to be there come finals time. The three or four sides who are going to battle it out in the relegation stakes. Then the final group are the two or three swingers in the middle who will either press on for a finals berth or slip into that relegation zone. At the same stage last year there were seven teams undefeated. Six of these seven teams played in finals with four of these contesting the second semi. Nineteen sides had three wins and one loss. Sixteen of these nineteen played in finals. From these statistics it is pretty clear how important it is to get wins on the board early on in the year. This year we have ten teams undefeated in the senior sections and fourteen with one loss. Divisions 3 and 4 have byes so there are teams who have played only three games. No doubt the draw has caused some teams to have a particularly tough start to the year. Hampton Rovers in Premier B comes immediately to my mind as they have already played the two Premier relegated teams Old Brighton and St Bedes Mentone Tigers and flag favourites, St Kevin’s OB. They should take heart from Parkdale Vultures who were sitting in a similar position last
year and ended up being their opponents in the Premier C Grand Final. In William Buck Premier, Old Trinity are the only undefeated team, precisely the same spot as they were at this stage last year. They were undefeated after Round 4 in 2014 but were the only undefeated team not to make it through to the finals. The “middle” teams, Old Xaverians and Old Carey play each other this week in what could be a make or break game. Whenever I discuss the ups and downs of the competition, Premier C seems to be the one that is the most even. This is the only section without an undefeated side with currently five teams recording three wins and one loss. I wouldn’t write off any team including bottom side PEGS who lost one of their games with a kick six seconds before the siren. After consecutive premierships, Kew are sitting undefeated alongside Ormond in Division 1. Other undefeated sides are St John’s in Division 2, West Brunswick and Emmaus St Leos in Division 3 and relatively newcomers to the competition Pt Cook and Canterbury in Division 4. Finally I would like to wish all the 9,000 mothers of our players a very happy Mothers Day tomorrow. They along with the wives and partners will be honoured at many of our games over the weekend. We also offer our acknowledgement and support to clubs who are organising events in support of breast cancer research. Power House wore pink socks last Saturday with Old Xaverians, North Old Boys St Pats and North Brunswick doing likewise today.

TRINITY HAPPY TO GO 12 AND WIN ON POINTS Fancy queuing to get into a pub to watch a boxing match that feature; no Australians, where the protagonists (one of whom has been a convicted on domestic violence) were each netting more than $100 million and the result was more than likely pre-arranged in the small print. Well that’s what many of us all did on Sunday afternoon and the so called fight of the century resembled something more akin to some of the laughable false bravado we see on the AFL field today. Luke Hodge and Jordan Lewis landed more blows against North Melbourne than Mayweather or Pacquiao did through 12 rounds. However Mayweather’s ability to absorb the contest for 12 rounds all the while scoring enough points saw to it that his undefeated record in tact. Old Trinity have a long way to go before getting to 48-0, but a 4-0 start will do very nicely. Just like Mayweather (this is the only comparison that can be related), they seem to absorb the contest and score just enough points to win. The T’s are not blowing teams out of the water. Whether they need to or have the power to are two different questions. The only question on everyone’s lips are what is the difference between the 4-0 T’s of 2014 and the newer 2015 model? Daley Oval has been a happy hunting ground for Old Trinity over the past few seasons. Again an opponent with strong credentials turned up, played very well for most of the game, but was ultimately overrun by the green machine. A big crowd watched on as Old Trinity went someway to putting to bed their grievance with Old Scotch about their dropping of 12 players in round 18 last year. Old Scotch led Old Trinity into time on in the third term before four quick goals saw the home side take all the momentum into the final quarter. Jack Hunt is a game breaker. Sure Iezzi ,Tinney and lately the Howell’s are always a handful but Jack’s ability to kick a goal and a team lifting one at that is a key to Old Trinity’s success this year. The James’, Long and Bowden, were good for the Cardinals, whilst Hugo Perry is making a strong case for being the most improved footballer in the comp. Old Scotch were undermanned so will certainly take something from this game, just not 2
the four points. It’s too early to call the Blues and St Bernard’s match a finals preview, but on early form it would be a shame were these sides not to meet again in September. Hopefully both will be at full strength then too, for St Bernard’s win by five points generated more post match discussion about the players that weren’t there and what might happen should both sides have their full armory. Nevertheless, the teams on the park were magnificent as Blues established the early edge breaking to a three-goal lead half way through the third. A period of dominance for St Bernard’s ensued and they clawed it back to eight points at half time. Adam Bentick continued to stamp his authority on the contest to assist St Bernard’s to the lead. Blues were struggling with their bench, Hayes (injured in the warm up), Heinz (calf) and Matt Hart (broken ankle) left the Blues down on healthy men. Alex Boyse has to be the find of the year for the Snowdogs, another four goals from a flank has him leading the goalkickers with 14. The game ended as it started for Blues, another injury. Tom Sivelstro, broke his ankle in the last tackle of the game. St Bernard’s held on, but this feels like it’s only the first installment this year. Old Xaverians had a hot start against Beaumaris bayside and whilst the Sharks got within range in the second term, it was the third quarter where the game slipped from their grasp. Beauy certainly win enough of the ball, but their disposal into their forward line often lets them down. Despite this, Daniel Gribbin still booted five goals in a losing cause. At the other end, perhaps Beaumaris were too Handley conscious in their defensive efforts, allowing Jake Williams (5 goals) and Matt Margin (4) to slip their opponents with regularity. Despite their ascendancy, Xavs were still wasteful, WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER — TIPS IN BOLD Old Scotch v Beaumaris Old Trinity v Uni Blacks Uni Blues v Collegians St Bernards v De La Salle Old Carey v Old Xaverians

they ended up kicking 11.12 in the second half. Old Carey had eight goals straight on the board before their first behind and it was this kicking efficiency that was the early indicator of how the contest would unfold. De La Salle worked their way back into the match and won back the lead in the third. A late Carey goal meant the game was for the taking at orange time. Old Carey found their rhythm and mojo and piled on 7.4 in the final term to break De La down with precise kicking and deadly finishing. Wasteful ball use from their better ball users was probably the difference and as De La stumbled, the Old Carey confidence grew. Jarrod Reid clunked everything sent his direction and importantly rewarded his midfield – led by James Rimmington – by converting for five majors.

The Grand Final rematch had more riding on it than just bragging rights, as Collegians and Blacks were both chasing a first win. Collegians finished full of running to collect their first batch of four points for the year, leaving the reigning premiers winless with a trip to Daley oval this week to come. Blacks were certainly better than they have been. Jordan Quaile and Isaac Anderson were important and Josh Free was also winning the ball, however, Collegians had similar output from their ball winners. Sam Hibbins continues to grow with every game and it was great to see James Kondarovskis back somewhere towards his best. Although Konda might argue that 1.5 for the day is a long way short of his usual output. Blacks won lots of the ball in the final quarter but they were only able to produce a solitary point. Not good enough for a side that is desperate for a win.

FINAL QUARTER BLITZES There are many variables in footy: form, momentum, injuries and weather conditions. While the weather in Round 4 was clear and sunny, it was also windy, and it’s fair to say the wind directly impacted the results of three of the matches in Premier B. Fitzroy and Parkdale both got their first wins for the season and they did it in starkly different fashions. Fitzroy overcame their habitual third-quarter jitters to run over Mazenod, while Parkdale led OMs by 40 points at three quarter time and went scoreless in the last, managing to hold on for a narrow win. There’s something heart-warming about the winning celebrations of a previously winless side; indeed, the mood among Fitzroy players and supporters after their victory over Mazenod was befitting of a finals win. While by no means were they getting carried away, it’s just good to get on the board. The Roys started the game stronger but failed to exert scoreboard pressure, managing only 1.7 in the first quarter. They put on their kicking boots and took control in the second, kicking six goals and taking a 15 point lead into half time. Fitzroy’s third quarters so far this season have been poor, and it seemed like both clubs knew it. Mazenod kicked the first five goals before Fitzroy finally found a goal 20 minutes in, through Greg Hesse. They added a couple more to take a four-point lead at the last change. Despite Mazenod kicking the first of the quarter through Ben Phibbs, the Roys players settled and kicked the next five goals on the trot. Phibbs replied with a couple more for the Nodders and the lead was cut back to three goals. The Roys lifted and kicked three more goals to put the result beyond doubt. Corbin Stevic kicked six for the Roys, while Jeremy Devlin kicked two and was among the best in his first game for the season for Mazenod. Old Brighton, challenged by a willing opposition and another swag of changes to their line-up, defeated Caulfield Grammarians by 55 points. Caulfield had first use of a significant wind advantage, scoring four goals for the quarter. The Tonners, however were efficient into the breeze, goals to Marcel Bruin, Charlie King and 4
@ DAChalmers81 Harry Cannon completed a satisfactory quarter. The second quarter provided the Tonners with the chance to take hold of the match and they did. Caulfield began to feel the pressure of the Tonners’ collective effort to deny them space and when they did mount an attack into the breeze, the Tonners’ defenders drove them back. The Tonners attacked relentlessly in the final term, booting 8.2. As Caulfield tired and spaces opened up around the contests. Goals came with a rush through Bruin, Healy, King and Dan Anthony, who leads all comers with 19 goals after four rounds. For Caulfield, Keegan Stewart kicked three, Neratzoglou and Reilly continued their solid contributions and Barker also impressed. Hampton Rovers made five changes to their team ahead of their clash at TH King against St Kevin’s Old Boys. The Rovers worked hard all day but struggled to match the quality of the home side. In fine conditions at Glen Iris, SKOB kicked with the breeze in the first and while the Rovers had plenty of the ball early on, it didn’t take long for St Kevin’s to turn it on. They held a 38-point lead at the first break, although they were wasteful in front of goal, kicking 7.11 in the opener and 12.18 for the half. The Rovers had twice as many scoring shots as their opponents in the third term as they managed to control the footy and put the home side under pressure. Going into the final change the margin was 35 points but the feeling was the Rovers weren’t out of the contest. St Kevin’s put any notion of a comeback out of the equation as they kicked five unanswered goals to blow the margin out in this skipper Anthiony Lynch’s 200th game. Kyle Docherty joined Matt Robbins (5 goals) in the best for Rovers, whilst St Kevin’s had 12 individual goalkickers and were led well by Henry Parkes (5 goals), McCann and Steven Salopek. St Bedes/Mentone have been the quiet achievers of Premier B, notching up three straight wins while remaining in the shadow of the Tonner’s and SKOB’s undefeated starts. AJAX ended up being a comprehensive 47 points at first glance, they were challenged all day and got home with the aid of the wind after holding a one-point lead only at the final change. The Jackas were left to rue a goalless second quarter, which left them five goals down at the main break. AJAX made the most of the wind in the third to leave themselves in with a chance. However, the Tigers had other ideas, finishing with eight goals to one to earn a comfortable win. Mitchell Coen led the way with three goals, while Pat Kean and Paul Wintle were also very good for the Tigers. Jake Lew kicked three for the Jackas and Jason Ritterman returned to be among the best. Parkdale were at home for the first time this year, hosting Old Melburnians, with a lot at stake for both sides. Parkdale had a dream start, kicking five goals while holding Old Melburnians goalless in the first quarter. Conditions meant both sides had trouble finding the big sticks. Round 5 shapes up as an intriguing one and a tricky one to tip a winner. The two undefeated teams will meet, with Old Brighton hosting St Kevins; Old Melburnians will look to bounce back against St Bedes/Mentone; there’s a showdown between last year’s Premier C grand finalists Hampton and Parkdale; Caulfield returns to Glenhuntly Oval to meet a rejuvenated Fitzroy, and Mazenod will face off with AJAX.

UNDEFEATED STREAKS ENDED If you thought Premier C’s competition couldn’t get closer – it did so in Round 4. Before the weekends’ games two clubs sat solely above a cluster with 3-0 win-loss ratios. By the end, Old Ivanhoe and Peninsula were brought back to a huge bunch all at 3-1. Oakleigh edged past Peninsula at home while Old Haileyburians outdid their opponents in Old Ivanhoe. Elsewhere Monash Blues joined the 3-1 brigade, handsomely defeating Williamstown CYMS; Therry Penola kept PEGS from breaking their duck; and Marcellin held off Old Camberwell. Williamstown’s venture to the plush home of local confidant, Williamstown VFL will not be blissfully remembered. Monash Blues joined them at Burbank Oval and made the ground their own from the outset. Monash doubled Williamstown’s goal tally in the first term – but this proved to be the least of Willy’s woes. Six goals in the second saw the Blues push the lead to 37 at halftime. The CY’s two goals in the term would be their last for the game. Monash added another five majors before the final siren to win by 73 points. Nick Petering kicked seven for the Blues in his matchwinning outing. Old Haileyburians broke Old Ivanhoe’s undefeated streak in conditions set for September as the wind played a key to success. The Bloods kicked with it in the first and ensured a solid 14 point lead at the first break. Ivanhoe wasted chances in the second and couldn’t make use of the advantage scoring 1.7 while Haileybury bagged two of their own. The visitors kicked away to a 22 point lead by three quarter time but the Hoes rallied late with the wind at their backs in the last creating nervous times for the travelling fans. But the Bloods steadied and finished 15 point victors. Chris Povey provided a great focal point for Haileybury at CHF and was B.O.G with four goals. With the wind at their backs in the first quarter, PEGS were restricted to just one goal by Therry Penola, who managed a major of their own. The tight tussle in the opening term costing PEGS 6
in the end. Therry made use of their turn with seven goals to gain a 34 point buffer at the half. PEGS cut the deficit to 13 after the long break but it wasn’t enough as the Lions ran home with the breeze to win by 32 points. Darcy Ryan won the inaugural Sean Flaherty medal for best on ground between the two teams. While Jarrod Bannister was brilliant again with seven majors, his brother Corey joined in with five. Marcellin were made to put in a four quarter effort to earn the points last weekend as the winless Old Camberwell pressured the Eagles at home. Old Camberwell were three points adrift at both the quarter and halftime mark, but won the third quarter to lead by four at the final change. Marcellin’s strength and experience arose in the last, kicking five goals to the Wellers two. The Eagles ended the contest 14 point winners but signs from Old Camberwell were more than positive with a strong performance verse a finals contender. Stephen Derry was best on ground for Marcellin who join the four others at 3-1. Oakleigh scrambled their way back onto the winners list nudging past Peninsula in the final term. The Krushers smothered the Pirates in the first with five goals to take an early 26 point lead, inaccuracy at goal however withheld the margin from displaying Oakleigh’s dominance. Oakleigh’s lead was chipped away by Peninsula who put themselves in front late in the third to go into the last quarter 3 points ahead. Peninsula extended their advantage to 10 midway through the fourth term, and Oakleigh looked gone for all money. A late surge by the Krushers and desperate defending kept them three points up at the final siren. Aaron Cloke was the leading goal kicker and best afield with PREMIER C — TIPS IN BOLD Monash Blues v PEGS Therry Penola v Williamstown CYMS Peninsula v Old Camberwell Old Haileyburians v Marcellin Oakleigh v Old Ivanhoe

five goals for Oakleigh. This week, Monash Blues play PEGS, Monash will go 4-1 and ease past the Bombers. Therry Penola host Williamstown CYMS, a rematch of the Division 1 Grand Final. Both clubs need the victory to stick with the pack, predicting Therry to win at home. Peninsula face Old Camberwell at home, should be an easy win for the Pirates. Marcellin travel to Old Haileyburians, the Bloods coming off a big victory, tipping they will carry this momentum into this weekend and knock off the Eagles. Oakleigh take on Old Ivanhoe at Scammell Reserve, Ivanhoe will get back on the winners list with in a close one over the Krushers.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME
A BIG STEP WITH SHORT LEGS Ben Rolfs (pictured second from right) took a major step in the Old Trinity v De La Salle U19 Premier Game on Saturday, when the two field umpires were running late to the game, young Ben put his hand up without hesitation. Brian “Woody” – VAFA Head of Umpiring arrived just at the start of the game only to question who the tiny field umpire was and complimented his ‘fit’ with the game. Ben field umpired the first 15 minutes of the game, however once the field umpires, arrived and ran onto the ground, Ben headed back to the boundary, which was his original appointment. Ben is 16 and last field umpired two years ago – in an U 13’s match. If Saturday is any indication… look out for Ben as a senior VAFA Field Umpire in the not too distant future.
LADIES AT THE FOOTY
Expect to see a larger than usual contingent of ladies at the footy this weekend, as VAFA clubs all host their annual Ladies lunches coinciding with Mothers Day on Sunday. We love what women do at footy clubs. Clubs hosting luncheons on Saturday at their respective home grounds are: North Brunswick Canterbury St Bernards Parkdale Vultures Therry Penola Chadstone
Hampton Rovers MHSOB Old Brighton Old Carey Parkdale Vultures St Bernards
Therry Penola University Blues Whitefriars Old Trinity Caulfield Grammarians
Get along and support your club and women in footy this weekend!
AMMO ODD SPOT As to be expected clubs have been conceived in the oddest of venues – from a court house, pubs to school classrooms. Their roots are just as interesting, Hampton Rovers originally started as a Boy Scout group. One Hampton Rovers player who experienced footy at all three senior levels was Geoff James. Better known as Ocker he quit amateur ranks for Sandringham in the VFA. He soon caught the eye of St Kilda talent spotters who dangled the proverbial cash carrot. Sandy refused to clear him until 1954 when the boy from Hampton Rovers became a Panther (the short lived nickname of the Saints in the VFL). During one VFL game he went down with a knee injury, his wife saw the incident, jumped the fence and ran to the aid of her man. True devotion. Ocker – the boy from Hampton Rovers ended his playing days with Mentone.

TURNING THE VAFA PINK A number of VAFA clubs will be wearing Pink socks this weekend as a fundraising initiative for the Breast Cancer Network Australia. As Dave Allan from North Brunswick told us, “As I’m sure many other clubs have experienced, we have recently had a number of club members affected by breast cancer and wanted to do something to show our support. We also wanted to run an event which would encourage family, friends and members of the wider community to come down and visit the club. We’ll have activities for kids (face painting, colouring in etc.) and a bake sale to raise funds for the BCNA.”
to enable our Auskick kids to get out on the ground and have a game at half time as part of our Family day that we are holding as part of our involvement in the Pink Sports Day held by the Breast Cancer Awareness Network. Other Clubs wearing Pink socks include: Old Xaverians and NOBS/St Pats.
As advised, the reason we would like this to occur is that we would like to extend the half time break of the Senior game in order THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

HAWTHORN CELEBRATE 20 YEARS
A large crowd assembled for lunch at Old Brighton’s Beach Oval on Saturday to celebrate the opening of the new on field facilities. The oval was officially opened by Bayside Mayor, Cr Felicity Frederico, assisted by the Federal member for Goldstein, The Hon Andrew Robb. Cr Frederico spoke about Bayside Councils commitment to upgrading facilities in the area with Beaumaris and Hampton Rovers being beneficiaries. The councillor also stated that the change rooms and social room were also on target for renovations in the next years. On the field the Tonners have started in great fashion sitting on top of the Premier B ladder undefeated. Congratulations on a wonderful refurbishment of the ground and the great relationship the club has built with the council.
Hawthorn Amateur footy club celebrated their first 20 years on Saturday night at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club with their annual Hawk Ball. Phil Avery, who started his playing career at the club in 1996, and still playing seniors today, spoke of his time at the club. He reflected on his memories of the 1998 premiership, the Almost Football Legends appearance, the fun had at the old run down clubrooms right through to the Reserves premiership last year. As part of the celebrations

Hawthorn named our best ever team, with criteria being a minimum of 2 seasons or 25 games. The night was a great success having 20 of the 22 players selected in the side in attendance. The club also inducted two life members on the night, Alex McPhie and Aaron Knott.

SPT’S PLAYER ANALYSER
SPORTS PERFORMANCE TRACKING’S PLAYER ANALYSER –
WILL THOMPSON – (OLD MELBOURNIANS) Last week we took an in depth look at De La Salle key back, Tom Humphreys - http://www.vafa.com.au/latest-news/gps-tracking-of-vafa-player-game-time-tom-humphrey/
This week the subject of Sports Performance Tracking’s Player Analyser is Old Melbournian’s utility Will Thompson. Will Thompson is a very versatile player. The ability for a player to have the capacity to be a tagger, but also roam the wings, forward-line and back-line is a real asset to the team.
Will Thompson (Fig 3.1)
His fitness levels need to be prepared to play on the in-and-under type, but also the outside athlete that covers a lot of km’s. Will’s game is modelled on the back of West Coast’s Scott Selwood. His role is to be a stopper that still wins the ball and hurts the opposition in transition. Old Melbournians are situated in B Grade, but this does not stop Will becoming a phenomenal athlete. Racking up over 15km for the day with 106 sprint efforts is no easy task. Will is a consistent runner. His distance average and average speed stayed very consistent throughout the game. His top end speed did deteriorate towards the last quarter. SPT results suggest Will needs to work on repeat efforts at high volume as he doesn’t seem to get much rest time in the game. The OM’s had an unfortunate 91-point loss to arch enemies St Kevin’s Football Club in Round 3. Will was named 4th best on Ground for the OM’s and his GPS results suggested he did not stop trying. Looking at two elite players from A Grade, Will’s numbers stack up. He was only down a handful of sprints in the game and his top speed had both Jack and Tom covered. What was present in our stats was that Will spent a lot of time walking. Looking at his 5 minute interval breakup, Will needed more bench time in order for him to rest and hit those high numbers in the last quarter. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015
Jack Bull (Fig 1.1)
Looking at the two tables above, you can start to see that Will (Fig 3.1) found himself walking to position a lot. Comparing him to Jack (Fig 1.1) there is a 50% difference in this movement. Jack seemed to spend a lot more time at higher speeds throughout the game. Using Sports Performance Tracking’s data, we can not only understand what the players are doing out on the field, but we can then take this back to training and recovery, and work out what each role requires and why someone is or isn’t performing. Without this data, we would not be able to understand and inform Will of his strengths and weaknesses. SPT’s data allows the subjective to become objective. Will Strange is the CEO and founder of Sports Performance Tracking (sportsperformancetracking. com). This year they have teamed with the VAFA to analyse how VAFA footballers compare to the elite level using their GPS tracking technology. To start tracking yourself, head to http://www.sptgps.com.au

VAFA CONGRATULATES YOU IN REACHING THE MILESTONE

Congratulations to Monash Blues’ ANDREW HICKEY – On ANZAC Day ‘The Scalpel’ became only the third Monash Blues player to notch up 250 games. Since his debut in 2001, a then raw kid from Warrnambool has built a career highlighted by team success, individual honours and admiration for his dedication and skill. Andrew is a two-time premiership player (2002 - U19’s and 2003 - Seniors) who has finished in the Top 5 of the Senior Club Best & Fairest nine out of last ten years, winning the award in 2012 and finishing runner-up on another five occasions.

Congratulations to Hawthorn ’s DAVE PRITCHARD – Only the forth H player to reach the 200 game milestone, Dave Pritchard is one of the most consistent performers in H history. He has been runner up in the club’s best and fairest on numerous occasions before finally breaking through to win one in 2013. He plays the game hard but fair and has always been a favourite of coaches for his no fuss, never give in attitude. He was selected on the half forward flank in the team of the past 20 years. Congratulations to on 200 games.
200
Congratulations to Aquinas’ AARON KINGHORN – Aaron is not renowned for being fast but he is a smart ruckman and a major headache to opponents. A quiet but confident guy, Kinga has always given his best and is totally committed to winning every contest. Starting at the Club in 2003 in the Reserves, Kinga cemented his place in the Seniors in 2011 where he has played the majority of his games since. Winner of the Reserves Best and Fairest in 2005, ‘07, ‘08 and joint winner in ‘09, Kinga enjoys the respect of all within the club.
150
Congratulations to University Blacks’ HUW LACEY – After moving to the Blacks from Old Melburnians prior to the 2007 season, Lace has played in two Senior premierships. As well as being a player of the highest quality, Lace has also served on the committee for a number of years and has won numerous ‘best dressed’ awards at various club functions. Given his off-field and on-field qualities, Lace will clearly go down as one of the best Blackers of his era.
100
Congratulations to Monash Blues’ SAM WALSH – A skilful and mercurial forward, Walshy gives 100% each time he runs out onto the ground. His most notable performance was against PEGS in 2013, where he stood up across half back to take 15 contested marks, carrying the team to victory. This performance will forever be etched in Monash folklore. Walshy’s dedication to the Club whilst managing his blossoming medical career is something to be admired.
100
Congratulations to Hawthorn ’s STEVE GUNN – A leader around the club, Gunny has worked hard on his game to become one of the permanent senior midfielders. He has been reserves captain, footy trip chief, raffle organiser, all round class clown and a great guy to have around the club. Congratulations to Steve Gunn on 100 games.

Congratulations to West Brunswick’s CHRIS GERMON – Originally hailing from Western Australia, Quiddy joined West Brunswick in 2009. Chris has been a most valuable member of the club with his raking left foot, his hard body on the field, and his IT prowess off the field. He was the vice-captain of the 2014 Senior Premiership side and won the award for the club’s best finals player in that season.
100
Congratulations to AJAX’s ASH KALB – One of the most talented players at the Club, Ash had a breakout year in 2014, finishing 3rd in the Club Best & Fairest. In 2012 Kalby finished runner up with the ressies, but then travelled and was a little disinterested. He was convinced to apply his talents last year and has been a wonderful “quarterback” and a most reliable player since. Well done Kalby and looking forward to the next century.
50
Congratulations to MHSOB’s SHANNON KEOUGH – A South Australian import, Shagga has made a seamless transition to life at the Woodfull-Miller Oval and has gone on to become an invaluable member of the football club.
50
Congratulations to Westbourne’s EVAN KARAGEORGE – Evan’s commitment and loyalty to Westbourne is unquestioned. Coming across to WGFC after captaining the School’s inaugural First XVIII Premiership he quickly settled in. He became an instant cult figure around the Club and there is no disputing that the team is very much stronger with him in there.
50
Congratulations to Westbourne’s ANDREW NOBLE – Andrew encapsulates what the word Clubman is all about and is often the first to put his hand up on game day for any jobs that need to be done. Coming back from a knee injury that sidelined him for the best part of the last two seasons, he has returned to playing some solid football.
50
Congratulations to Richmond Central’s ROBERT NOLAN – Robbie immediately proved himself a natural leader on joining the Club XVIII’s 2011, and followed a best and fairest with appointment as captain. Robbie became the first dual premiership captain in the club’s history with consecutive flags. He combines outstanding work rate with class and nous around the packs.

CONFUCIUS SAY - SEASON STILL YOUNG A very foolish man is the man who believes he has his finger on the pulse at the end of round 4 in a VAFA season. Rash judgments and outlandish predictions become an omnipresent feature of conversations at footy clubs at the end of round 4. It’s fair to suggest that most of us imagined that Old Geelong and Ormond would feature in the top few and Yarra Valley was going to struggle, but then where does that leave the 1-3 Prahran and the surprise packet Kew at 4-0? The footy history books are fortunately not written in Round 4. If they were, Ron Barassi’s Kangaroos would have been condemned to the bottom 4 at 0-4 in 1975 and Collingwood would have been flag favourites at 4-0 (5-0 after 5) in 2000. The rest, as they say, is history. The Psychic convention was in Moorabbin over the weekend but none of them seemed that interested when I asked about the fortunes of Prahran Assumption, who finally broke the duck with a strong win against Bulleen Templestowe. It was a scintillating day across Melbourne on Saturday, and it was Prahran Assumption who chucked their Wayfarers on at Toorak Park. As expected, the going was very tough early as the two great rivals greeted each other with brutal intensity. Facing a strong series of forward thrusts in the second quarter, Prahran held strong down back and countered to hold a 23-point lead at half time. Both sides stagnated in a dour third term with just one goal apiece kicked to see the game alive heading into the last. However, Prahran doubled their efforts in the final quarter to secure a decisive 53-point win. Prahran’s power duo, Josh Hogarth and John Robbins kicked 9 between them and were irrepressible in attack. Bulleen, missing key forward Kristian Cherbakof, lacked the penetration and resolve that saw them dismantle St Mary’s last week. Youngster Liam Ireland impressed with 3 goals and competition powerhouse Paul Florence was once again tireless in their loss. NOBS/St Pats has quickly taken on the mantle of the division’s enigma, bouncing back from two disappointing losses to manage Whitefriars by 42 points. The game, marred by a terrible leg injury to 16
one of this columnist’s favourites, Aaron Brosolo, was tight in the clinches until NOBS/St Pats kicked away in the final term. Mick O’Donoghue and Nick Holt were crucial in the backline for NOBS/St Pats, staving off a number of Whitefriars’ entries, particularly in the second term. For Whitefriars, it was another case of a decent effort resulting in a last quarter fizzle. Alex Marcello continued his terrific form and Dan ‘Yogi (picnic baskets) Bear’ Hogan provided fierce resistance in the midfield. I think when you start creating nicknames for your own fictional nicknames you’ve got to acknowledge you’ve got a problem… It was a case of leaving too much to the old firm as Old Geelong pushed up to the 3rd on the ladder with plenty of upside in their 72-point trouncing of the winless Yarra Valley. After a strong start, Yarra Valley floundered from quarter time on, kicking just 4 goals to 13 from that point on. Jack McMeel, firming as recruit of the year, kicked 4 as he danced around opponents like a drunken white boy hearing Beyoncé’s ‘Partition’ for the first time. He was ably supported by Old Geelong’s impressive core of midfielders, starring Colby O’Brien and Rupert Kemp, sounding like a new generation OC cast. As previously mentioned, Yarra Valley’s list, ravaged by retirement and a competitive area, is too reliant on premiership heroes, James Amos, Ryan Pollard and Stephen Donald. They face Old Mentonians in another tough clash away this week. Ferndale Park hosted one of the most anticipated clashes of Division 1 in season 2015 thus far as Ormond made the trip to Glen Iris to take on St Mary’s Salesian. With so much to play for and Mal Michael an interested onlooker, Ormond took charge immediately and never let up their immense pressure as they confirmed they are the side to beat this season. simply dominant at full forward for the Monders, kicking 6 to half time before gingerly leaving the field with an ankle injury. The most ominous feature of the clash was the ease of which they replaced the big fella, as Sam Perry kicked 4 and young debutant Matt Perry kicking 3. Their size and skill reduced the often flamboyant and quick St Mary’s Salesian to honest triers. Nick Baum was once again strong in defence for the Saints, and Luke Dykes played his best game for the club. Valuable lessons will be learnt after facing the best in the competition. Kew remained in touch with Ormond with a 66-point win against Old Mentonians. The game was in the balance at ¾ time with the game 20 points in Kew’s favour after a couple of late goals. However, even in the wake of Old Mentonians extraordinary comeback against Prahran the week before, the Kew juggernaut blew a gale over Victoria Park with a brutal last term. Burning questions from Clive Waterhouse HQ are whether Rob Chisholm will recover from his ankle injury. performance, however it was a win that started in defence with Cochrane, Henderson and Leeds subduing a dangerous forward line of Mills, Gledhill and Rossi. GAME ABANDONED AT VAFA HQ Controversy surrounded the game between Elsternwick and St Johns in Round 4, with the game being called off after a major melee in the third quarter, the result pending a VAFA investigation. The melee was sparked by a late bump, and with no ending to the melee in sight, the umpires had no choice but to call the game off. The game was marred by several incidents throughout the game, including a head count called by St Johns in the second quarter. It was anticipated that the game would be fiery considering that Elsternwick’s former captain Aaron Thornton was playing against his old club for the first time. It was an unfortunate end to a game that’s result seemed inevitable with St Johns leading by over 10 goals. The JOCs were a class above the Wicks and may have missed out on valuable percentage boost. As it stands, the result of the game has not been finalised, pending investigation. After the previous week’s disappointing loss to Ivanhoe, Old Eltham rebounded in grand style with a commanding 60 point win over MHSOB. The Turtles were definitely dealt a handy draw, with three out of the first four rounds at home, and they capitalised. The Unicorns, were super impressive in their win over Paradians but was dealt a firm reality check from the get go. The Turtles banged on five goals to nil in the first and were cruising. But the second was a different story. Melbourne High showed its wares with a stunning five goal second term, but leaked goals the other way and was four goals down at the half. Inaccuracy plagued Eltham in the third quarter, kicking 5.7 but it was enough to stretch its lead to nine goals by the final change. The Turtles seemed to put the cue in the rack in the last, or may have been in preservation mode and ran out winners by ten goals. In a strange game at Garvey Oval, David Boundy kicked six of the 12 goals scored by both sides for the day. Old Paradians, smarting after its shock loss a week prior, bounced back with a 20 18
point win over Monash Gryphons. In what was an extremely dour affair, Monash held its own against Paradians early and found itself in front at quarter time. Unfortunately for the Gryphons, they would only kick two more goals for the day. The win sees the Raiders hold their spot in the four and sometimes, teams just have to win ugly. With six goals to two after quarter-time, Paradians did enough to secure the four points. Richmond Central banked its second win for 2015 with a thumping 92 point win over a hapless South Melbourne. It’s been a horror start to the season for the Districts and they couldn’t hold off a rampaging Richmond Central at Lindsay Hassett Oval. Holland and Munro were the stars for the Snakes as they kicked five a piece and were well supported by Roy with four. South Melbourne forward Mitchell-Russell played a lone hand with six, but it was a small positive on a bleak day. The Districts have started well over the last couple of weeks, and this was no exception. They led by a goal at quarter time and left the Snakes with work to do. But South Melbourne couldn’t maintain the rage. Richmond Central kicked an astonishing 22 goals to seven in the next three quarters and waltzed away with the win. Northern Blues made its first big statement of 2015 as it handed Ivanhoe its first loss of the year, ensuring the Blues stayed in touch with the top four. They held off a fast finishing Ivanhoe by six points. After an indifferent start to the season, this may turn out to be the impetus for yet another finals berth for this young side. Ivanhoe was jumped early and subsequently played catch-up for the rest of the day. in the first quarter and left Ivanhoe reeling. But Ivanhoe has made significant strides this season, and this was evident in the second term. It held Northern goalless and kicked three of its own to stay in touch at the main change. The second half was a classic, as momentum swung between both sides. After the Blues kicked six in the third, they were matched by Ivanhoe in the last with six of its own but it was too little too late.
was dominant on every line. They won the ball at will, delivered it with purpose and vigour, and was running on top of the ground. Elsternwick will be disappointed with its efforts on the day and will want a change in attitude this week against Melbourne High. For St Johns, it travels Kevin Bartlett Oval in fine form and will want its record to remain unblemished.
Elsternwick hosted St Johns at Sportscover Arena, in what was a volatile spiteful affair. The JOCs’ form has been solid so far, without being spectacular and they seemed to relish on the wide expanses of VAFA HQ. Aaron Thornton burst out of the blocks with four first quarter goals, as the St Johns

A RACE IN TWO? We are almost a quarter of the way through the home and away season and already the ladder suggests this may be a two horse race. I’m not prepared to right off the rest of the competition JUST yet as I believe any team can beat any team on the day but, West Brunswick and Emmaus St. Leo’s are still both undef.. My early pick for the flag, the Magpies, have the best defence. The Animals, the best attack. You just have to stay healthy. Why? West Brunswick are deep and sit pretty on the reserves ladder as well. I was VERY happy to get my first clean sweep in the tipping as well as predicting a tight match of the round. To the games:
EMMAUS ST. LEO’S DEF. ELEY PARK A glorious day for football at Bennettswood reserve started with Chris Beluszar providing a handful by scoring majors to give them a big 6 goal to 1 lead, with the aide of a breeze. The Sharks came out firing in the second kicking 7 goals to 3 goals finished the half of stronger and went into the rooms trailing by only 3 pts. Leigh “Big Boy” Boothy and Noel “burner” Bahnsen scoring multiples to give the Sharks a sniff. Sadly, Eley Park players started to go down again with injuries in the 3rd and the Animals snapped into action. The Animals with their quick ball movement and ability to create off half back, kicked 15 goals to 1 to run over the Sharks by 90 pts. Best for the Animals was Nic Robin off half back and Chris Beluszar with 8 goals. GLEN EIRA DEF. BY AQUINAS Last week, I said Aquinas had a point to prove and they did so in emphatic style cruising to a 104 pt win over a struggling Glen Eira. The Saints were minus Daniel Entwistle whilst, Nathan Dennis was well held. Robert Blair and Andrew Spink were the shining lights in a dark day. Ben Nucifora slotted 8 goals and with a further 8 goal-kickers, the Bloods go to 3rd spot to stake an early claim for finals contention. Glen Eira remain the only win-less side in the Division 3 and I currently can’t quite see where this may 20

@gavsouthern come from. Nicholas Morrison-Story was judged best afield.
WEST BRUNSWICK DEF. LA TROBE UNI West Brunswick were happy to be home. La Trobe reportedly had 16 players away at a Music Festival in Bendigo. Maybe this isn’t a game to take much notice of but, the Magpies poor kicking has been a concern all season, that may come back to bite them one day. For the Magpies, Chris Germon continued his stella start to the year and Dave Ferrier provided some real bit around the packs. The Magpies proved to be to large of a mountain for La Trobe as the home side were far to strong, running out 68 point winners. It would have been a larger margin too, if it wasn’t for Lachlan Bences’ heroics and some inaccurate LTUFC kicking. POWER HOUSE DEF. BY ALBERT PARK The VAFA website touted this as “The battle of the Lake” and it was up until half-time. Albert Park’s high rotations saw the Falcons have 12 individual goal-kickers and only Ben Leskie of Power House looked like causing any havoc with 4 majors. Ben Raeside, Sean Bermingham and the Cattle brothers were behind the Falcon breaking away to get a comfortable 45 pt victory. Albert Park is currently in the middle of the ladder and most certainly, have the tools to climb. SWINBURNE UNI DEF. HAWTHORN This was the match of the round and they didn’t disappoint right from the first quarter with the teams going goal for goal. The Hawks had a slight breeze, taking a 7 point advantage in to the first change. The Swinny motor kicked in to gear in the second term as they kicked an amazing 10 goals to nothing. Hawthorn found it near impossible to stop the momentum as they ran hard, hit targets and kicked straight for goal. In the 2nd half, the Hawks arrested the momentum and started to play the game on their terms. Pritchard and Dave Kennedy got on top through the guts and Mick Nunan was controlling the backline. If the Hawks had’ve kicked straight, it would have been even closer than 4 goals at the last break. The Hawks continued this in the last, as they had plenty of chances but couldn’t kick straight enough to take the game. Swinburne clearly did the right things at the right time despite Hawthorn winning 3 quarters of footy and the game. Tom Kennedy again led Swinny with 6 goals and Ashley Woodhead was BOG.
PREVIEW My match of the round is Aquinas hosting Swinburne Uni with both teams sitting at 2-1. If Aquinas take the same opportunities Hawthorn squandered, It’s an Aquinas victory. Swinburne will make you pay if they don’t – Aquinas. West Brunswick won’t mind travelling 500 metres to UHS-VU. Despite a week off, UHS-VU

La Trobe host Emmaus St. Leo’s, who have only been challenged once this year. La Trobe are better than 1-4 suggests but, will be 1-5 next week. Albert Park head out to Hawthorn who won’t be happy being 1-4 either but, the Hawks are starting to gel and will show this on the scoreboard this week. Power House travel to Whitehorse Reserve and Eley Park. The Sharks injuries are a concern but, home ground advantage gets them over the line. Glen Eira have the bye and have another challenge next week against Hawthorn.

DRUBBINGS AND DROOLINGS A divide has begun to settle on Division 4 after four rounds, as four of five games ended in 100+ point drubbings. Although a week is a long time in football, so is the difference between a 100 point loss and any sort of win. Whether time can turn inside out and these four sides can turnaround their fortunes is something that remains to be seen. Focusing on the victors, we know that Canterbury, Manningham and Old Westbourne are ruthless units when they get in their groove. In a hard fought battle at Allard Park, it was Point Cook who proved supreme and firmed as a premiership fancy. With a huge first term, Point Cook held firm for the rest of the day to come out 38 point victors. William Dawson continued his fine form with a bag of four for the victors, supported by three each from Paul Hegarty and Daniel Sidwell. Young gun Mason Kip has catapulted into OJ Meehan contention with another best on ground performance. For the defeated Brunswick boys, Adam Karim booted four whilst Nicholas Trewhella battled hard in the clinches. The long drive to Mount Lilydale was no barrier to Canterbury continuing their Division 4 dominance, with a huge 113 point win. Scott ‘the Great Gatsby’ Fitzgerald produced one of the highlights of the season with a 12 goal haul against Mount Lilydale’s hapless defence. Whilst Mt Lilydale are steadily improving, there were few positives to take from this game minus a strong second quarter. Max Hampton kicked three and was best on the ground for Mount Lilydale as the Cobra lads, including star mids Lachlan Chapman and Lachlan Giles, ran amok on the heavy ground. Fellow Cobras, Manningham, crushed newcomers Masala at Koonung Reserve by a similar margin. The 118 point win received an exclamation mark in the form of an excellent spread of goal kickers that would have the Manningham faithful smiling. Christopher Jolly moved to 15 goals for the season with another bag of five. Tommy Bell excelled with 3 goals and 30+ possessions. After last week’s disappointment at Canterbury Sports Ground in the Cobra Derby, they’d be pleased with their demolition this week. For Masala it was another 22
www.vafa.com.au
@Richie_Humm steep learning curve with Feda Alidad promising with two goals. As we have established, it was more of the same at Parkside as Chadstone remained winless after four rounds. Chadstone stormed out to an early lead at quarter time and looked the better side with 10 shots to 5 but it was Vulture heaven from that point on as they shopped ‘til they dropped, coming out 123 point winners. Chadstone, led by Ian Bingham’s four goals, simply ran out of legs as Parkside showed their depth. The Shanes, McLaren and Potter, combined to kick 12 goals as the flurry of forward ventures allowed Parkside to have a monopoly on play in the second half. They need to beat Mount Lilydale this weekend to stay in touch with the top 4. Two teams at different ends of Division 4 faced off and unsurprisingly it was Westbourne Grammarians who clobbered South Mornington in front of a steady crowd at Westbourne School Ground. Dale Collins and Jesse Humphreys kicked 13 goals between them and were irrepressible in attack. If trees could talk, they might have been whispering about the excellent delivery into the forward line from Westbourne, or they might not. South Mornington struggled from the get go and look destined to fight out for the lower echelons of the table. One of the positives was sole goal kicker Wesley Spencer, who played well. Next week is a great chance to get a win on the board against Chadstone in a bottom of the table clash.
THIS WEEK’S FIXTURES Canterbury and Westbourne Grammarians face off in the match of the round. I believe Canterbury will win in a close one at home with Fitzgerald too hard to stop. In other games, North Brunswick will be too strong for the developing Masala, South Mornington to break the duck against Chadstone, Parkside to travel successfully against Mount Lilydale and Point Cook to continue their rampaging form over Box Hill North coming off the bye. CLUB WAREHOUSE RISING STAR 2015 ROBERT MAIBAUM – KEW Congratulations to this week’s Club Warehouse Rising Star nomination, Robert Maibaum (18), from the Kew Football Club. Robert won the nomination for his outstanding 10 goal performance against Old Mentonians at Victoria Park over the weekend. Robert graduated from Box Hill Secondary College in 2014 and played in the school side that was defeated by St Patricks in the Herald Sun Shield Final. Robert played in Kew’s senior premiership side last season after consolidating his position in the side midway through last year. He was also a member of the undefeated Under 18s side in their inaugural season of the now defunct Kew Giants. He is a much loved figure down at Victoria Park and continues to improve with every game he plays at senior level. Kew Football Club described Robert as an ‘affable young man who is very popular down at the club.’ They continued on to mention, ‘He has worked very hard to maintain his position in a talented forward line and has thrived under the tutelage of Andrew Brazzale and the like. It has been our privilege to watch his continued development and we anticipate he will continue to improve with more time’.
* to be eligible for the club Warehouse Rising Star, a player must be born no earlier than 1994 and playing his first full season of senior football.
Robert’s strengths include his innate ability to read the play and his strong marking skills. His improvement has occurred in conjunction with a strong preseason. Robert is currently completing an Electrical Apprenticeship.
VAFA ELASTOPLAST TRAINER OF THE WEEK REBECCA AND JESSIE PIGOTT – MONASH BLUES Once again Monash Blues Football Club has been extremely fortunate in the quality of trainers it has been able to attract over the years. This continued in 2013 when sisters, Rebecca “Bec” and Jessie Pigott came to our club help out with our then Club 18 (now Premier C - Third side.) As with nearly all first time trainers both were a little uncertain at the start, but now, in something we strongly encourage in all of our training/ medical personal that they take their jobs and make those jobs their own. And both girls have done exactly that, made the jobs their own and with great success. At no time was this exhibited when in 2013 one of our club 18 players received multiple injuries during a game. The injuries were the worst the THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015
club had seen in living memory and unfortunately ended the players’ football career. Both sisters handled the situation in the most proficient manner and with their training, assisted in any further complications occurring. Needless to say the Club and all involved with this unfortunate event were very proud of the two girls and what they achieved that day. When the girls aren’t looking after “the boys” Bec is studying for her Bachelor of Health Science at Victoria University to become a paramedic. Jessie is also studying whilst pursuing her career as Personal Trainer. Bec & Jessie not only enrich their key positions with the Thirds but our club as a whole and it’s an honor to nominate them for “Trainers” of the week. 41

@GeoffreyReilley Oval but chose to stay with Alphington.
I enjoyed the opportunity recently to chat with a delightful gentleman, Jack Murray (pictured below), following the occasion of his 90th birthday celebrations. Jack played with Alphington in the 1950’s in A Section. Alphington were runnersup in B Section in 1951 and Jack joined them the following season. Jack was a hard working, dogged half back flanker, recruited by Alphington from Deepdene. He particularly remembers playing against the strong Uni Blacks, Uni Blues, Ormond and Old Melburnians teams who featured in A Section at that time. He regards Geoff Tunbridge as his hardest opponent and the best player he saw in the VAFA. He also remembers the ability of others to go on and play with Tunbridge in the great Melbourne, VFL premiership teams of the 1950’s – Laurie Mithen and Dick Fenton-Smith, both ex Ormond. In addition to playing in the VAFA, Jack Murray was a regular in the tough Metropolitan Saturday morning competition. He played with Wirra Stars who represented the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation and played against the Brewery and other industrial teams. Ray would play certain games with Wirra Stars to ensure he could qualify for their finals and always played with Alphington in the afternoons. Neither Wirra Stars nor Alphington knew he was playing elsewhere. Ray worked for many years as a foreman at Commonwealth Aircraft leading teams of workers who made component parts for jet engines. He also made his own ‘shin guards’ out of aluminium! Jack made a number of lifelong friends from his Alphington days – Grant Read, Dan Heffernan and Len Coogan among them. Jack did receive interest from Hawthorn in the 1950’s after playing a representative game for the VAFA at Glenferrie 42
Jack also played with Camberwell in the VFA where he was coached by the legendary Collingwood player, Albert (Leeta) Collier. Collier was captain/ coach of Camberwell after his distinguished League career. Jack also mentioned playing in the VAFA’s ‘Lightning Premiership’ Competition, a time restricted set of games at the Junction Oval on the Queen’s Birthday weekend in June 1954. He recalled how Alphington won through to the final and came up against Parkside, then a C Section team. Alphington were expected to win the final, however, Parkside had recruited a young Ray Gabelich for one season. Gabelich controlled the game with his huge frame and fine football ability, especially in the last minutes of the game as he kept hitting the ball out of bounds at continuous boundary throw-ins until the siren sounded with Parkside just in front. Most will know that Ray Gabelich went on to be a star with Collingwood in the following years. Despite his time in other football competitions, Jack Murray had no hesitation in stating the ‘ammos’ to be by far the best competition. He said the standard of play was outstanding and although tough, it was usually fair, highly skilful and produced so many players who went on to star in the VFL. Jack is still keeping well in his 91st year and his power of recall was excellent. He is still living at home in Vermont and shared a number of other recollections with me of his time in the VAFA. Thanks Jack for making your time available, it was a privilege to share your memories.
5 YEARS AGO – 2010 The game of the round in D1 Section was between undefeated teams, Peninsula Old Boys and Monash Blues. The first quarter was full of exciting play with both forward lines kept open and the respective defences were under pressure. Monash made the most of this first quarter but only just and wasted their scoring shots with 4.9 to 4.3. Play tightened in the second quarter as the match developed into an arm wrestle before Peninsula maintained its unbeaten run with 9.17 to 7.16. Best – Rees, Murray, Coghlan, Southam (4), Nicholls, Barbour (Pen) and McKenzie, Young, Smyth, Osmond, Baring, Vincent (Monash).
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015
In Division 2, St Mary’s ‘broke their duck’ with an upset victory over Prahran, 10.13 to 6.7 although Prahran held onto to their position in the top four, but only just. In the low scoring game, The Saints made the most of their opportunities in the first quarter with 5.3 to 1.2. Best – S Stevens, Gatehouse, Kelly, Ryan, West, Crane (StM) and Matherson, Adamson, Northway, Costin, Laverty, MacDonald (Prahran)
10 YEARS AGO – 2005 In A Section Old Haileybury were sitting comfortably on top of the ladder after disposing of St Kevins 26.10 to 13.9. SKOBS actually led at quarter time by a couple of goals but The Bloods’ 11 goal second quarter set up the victory. SKOBS only kicked 6 goals after quarter time while Barker (6), O’Farrell (4) and Langford-Jones, Mason, Jones and Siapantis all managed 3. Best – Barker, Ford, Kight, Lay, Seccull, Chisholm, Carson (OH) and Mahoney, McKee (7), Dowling, fields, Pope, Greenham (StK).
change a club by enjoying a very good season could ‘leapfrog’ other clubs into D Section. Phil provided the ‘fors’ and ‘againsts’ and then reported that the feedback at that stage of the season from clubs was nothing but positive. The Clubs had reported increased attendances at matches when playing away and certainly increased numbers by visiting clubs. There were also positive comments from supporters and sponsors due to the closer geographical nature of each section. There followed three graphs showing with clear justification that the change had been successful.
In B Section North Old Boys defeated the young St Bedes Mentone Tigers team 19.17 to 13.6. NOBS drew away after quarter time and never really looked like being headed. Best – Spurling, MintonConnell (9), Sutherland, Maxton, T Sheehan, Curry(NOBS) and Connolly, Corder, McColl, M Wintle, Kane, Capsalis (StB MT).
20 YEARS AGO – 1995 There were now clear leaders in each of the three E Sections and all were undefeated after 6 rounds. St Leos led the way in E East with a percentage of 247. North Brunswick in E Central 216 and Beaumaris in E South 240. Coaches in E East were Brett Davidson (Aquinas), Andrew Hudson (Balwyn Combined), Peter Wigney (Canterbury North Balwyn), Mick Carusi (Chirnside Park), John Wise (Old Carey), Robert Osborn (Richmond Central), Mark Flack (St Leos Wattle Park), Peter Lowe (St Marys), David McCormack (Yarra Valley OB). VAFA CEO, Phil Stevens went to great lengths in his Editorial to report on the reasons behind the geographical placement of the three E Sections. There had been quite a lot of criticism pre-season toward the Executive’s decision. Many clubs felt outraged that after years of ‘slogging it out’ to climb up the sections, that in one sweeping THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015

RING-AROSIE AS SKOB SMOKE SCOTCH After four rounds of Under 19 football, we are starting to get a clear idea of who sits where in the competition. However, not many people would have expected St.Kevins to find it difficult against Old Scotch, except of course for the Cardinals and their supporters. After a 4 goal to 1 opening term many could be forgiven for thinking this may be another rout by last year’s runners up. It wasn’t to be the case because as all good teams do, a fightback ensued to see Scotch trail by 6 points at ¾ time. The final term was outstanding, with 4 goals kicked by Scotch to SKOBS 3, who recorded a two point victory to stay undefeated and sit atop the ladder. Ring booted 3 for Skobs with Lattanzio and Paull among their best. While for Scotch, Stewart booted 4 and Anderson was best afield. Beaumaris backed up their upset win over St. Bernards last week with a 25pt victory over Uni Blues at Crawford Oval. Uni Blues led by 3 goals at half time and it looked like they may run away with it, but such is the might of this Beaumaris team that they fought their way back into the contest on the back of players like McLaren and Tedde. They kicked 5 goals in the third term to lead by a goal and motored home from that moment on, keeping the Blues to just 2 points in the last quarter. Osti booted 5 in a best on ground performance. It has been a tough initiation for Uni Blues, but they remain competitive at 2-2 for the season. St.Bernard’s got back on the winners list in round 4 with a strong display over the hapless Uni Blacks. A tight opening term saw Bernards trail by 15pts. A rev up from the coach at quarter time got them going and they did not concede one
point for the rest of the game, banging on 20 more goals. Considine was outstanding getting a lot of the ball and booting 5 goals as a result while Delzoppo got in on the act and kicked 3. Kimpton and Allen were the best on a bad day for Uni Blacks, dominated all over the ground. Another confidence boosting win for the Snowdogs, who would have been disappointed with last week’s effort and they responded accordingly here. De La also got another win under their belt, after two competitive efforts against St.Kevins and Old Xaverians. They controlled play from the get go to defeat a spirited Old Trinity by 26 points at the Trinity playing fields. 4 goals to none in the first quarter set up De La before they were tested in the second. They responded again in the third, eventually running away with it in the last term. Vawser and Krelle both kicked 3 for the winning side with Colak and Anastasio performing very well on a lovely footballing day. Joyce was outstanding for Trinity kicking 4 goals and Hargreaves got a lot of football in the unfortunate loss. The Old Xaverians were never tested by Old Melburnians who once again sit on the bottom of the ladder. The Xavs kicked 8 first term goals and continued to do what they liked throughout the day kicking 31 goals in total. The win could have been a whole lot bigger with the Old Xavs kicking 22 behinds in the rout that was more like a training session for the Xavs than a home and away season game. Captain Anderson was electric kicking 6 and getting plenty of the ball throughout the contest. Wynne (5), Wiegold (4) and Tobin (3) were outstanding and Barlow showed his class throughout the contest. Waite kicked Melbourne’s only goals and Fuller was the best on a tough day at Stradbroke Park. A good percentage booster for the Xavs, who face the red hot St.Kevins next week.

SECTION TWO A brisk Saturday morning saw Parkdale Vultures keep their unbeaten season alive with a percentage boosting demolition of an undermanned Collegians side. Liam Marshall was unstoppable in the 175-point win, booting 8 goals. The match was effectively over at quarter time with the Collegians unable to hold the Vultures at bay, conceding 8.4 in what seemed like the blink of an eye. Tim Nancarrow was gallant for the Collegians in defeat but lacked support on the day. St Bedes/Mentone brought the Whitefriars perfect start to the season to an end at Whitefriars College on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers came flying out of the blocks, taking a commanding 39 point lead into the quarter time huddle. More impressively, they kept the red hot Friars team scoreless in the first stanza. Leading by 51-points at the final change, the Tigers seemingly took their foot off the pedal to survive late charge from Whitefriars eventually running out 23-point winners in a gritty win. Reagan Maddaford was best afield for the winners.
SECTION THREE Williamstown recorded a memorable win on Saturday morning, knocking off an in-form Old Xaverians outfit by 29-points. The match was neck and neck for most of the game with the Williamstown squad pulling away late on the back of an impressive five goal haul from Ben Connolly. Matthew Morris was also a prominent figure in the victory. Old Carey blew Old Camberwell away after quarter time in an entertaining contest at Carey Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. There was no love lost between these old foes with Carey running out 42-point victors on the day. William Mitchell was best afield for the winners who now sit equal first on the ladder, behind only on percentage. Elsewhere, Old Geelong continued their strong start to the season with a 88-point thumping of St Bernards, and Hampton Rovers fell 36-points short of a strong Ormond squad.
In other results, Old Brighton held off Caulfield Grammar to record a 10-point win, Fitzroy were far too good for Mazenod to the tune of 50-points, and Old Ivanhoe continued their strong start to 2015 with a hard fought 10-point win over Marcellin.

UMPIRES CORNER
@VAFAUA
Four rounds done, and the season is starting to take shape. After the cold and wet conditions of last week, Melbourne made up for it with a picture perfect day which led to some great football being played across all grades in the Association, and it was once again a chance to run on fast tracks and the Goalies had to bring out the sunglasses. If the rest of the season is like last week, we’re in for a belter.
FROM THE OFFICE OF CORRECTIONS Last week we reported that Leah Gallagher had retired due to injury. Leah was rightfully worried that she would be inundated with calls asking her about her troublesome foot. We can happily report, that Leah’s reason for retirement was not injury, but that after so many years of running around it was simply time to focus on other things. HOOPS’ BIG CALL The under 19s had one of the most highly credentialed field umpiring panels appointed recently with Head Coach, Tony Hales teaming up with 2014 Premier Grand Final umpire Michael Hooper in a 9:20 game. Whilst we are yet to hear Hoops’ assessment of Tony’s performance, we do know that he overcalled him twice during the game, a courageous move and great news for all other field umpires as a slot appears to have opened up in this year’s big one! BBQ AT JONESY’S It’s always great to hear of our members having a bit of good luck, and so it transpired out a Swinburne when Paul Jones won the meat tray raffle at the after match. Given Jonesy’s generosity we’re sure that the invitation to a BBQ at his place is on its way.
enjoy an environment that promotes fitness, fun, friendship and a sense of belonging to a community that shares a common value of participation and inclusion. In addition, this inclusive participation enhances life skills, and develops self-esteem, confidence and improved health. The VAFAUA provides umpires to FIDA to assist with the operation on game days. Umpires provided include field, boundary and goals. It is a great opportunity for all officials to fine tune their skills, and improve their communication skills. FIDA games are played in a friendly and positive environment throughout Victoria, with teams from as far as Gippsland, Ballarat, Saint Albans, and Rupertswood. FIDA also provides a state of origin national competition, where teams from South Australia, Victoria (Country and Metro), Queensland, Tasmania and New South Wales are involved. For more details please jump onto the FIDA web site (www.fida.org.au). All members of the VAFAUA are encouraged to make available at least one Sunday to participate in the FIDA competition. It is a VAFAUA executive expectation that all senior squad umpires part take in one Sunday. If you wish to umpire FIDA, please contact Tim Sutcliffe (tim@vivesco.com.au), or Merv Monty (merv@mobilemerv.com).

DE LA SALLE WINS - BLUES SLIP TO 2 & 2 One-sided contests were a feature of the Colts round four clashes, with UHS-VU/Flemington recording the biggest win of 127 points over University Blues. Czajko, Mallia and Lay all kicked three goals each for UHS-VU to feature in their sides best. After a slow start, Williamstown kicked away in the last quarter to easily account for La Trobe by 39 points. James Kilpatrick and Jarrah Lioumanis played crucial roles in the victory, with Kilpatrick also registering a major for Williamstown. Mazenod accounted for Ivanhoe to sit alone at the top of table on four wins. Ivanhoe were never in the contest, but a nine goal final term helped seal the deal for Mazenod. Swainston and Murdock kicked five and four goals respectively for the Nodders in the win. St Bernards now sit second behind Mazenod after beating Old Paradians by 19 goals. Paradians only managed a solitary two goals which is never going to be enough to win any game of football.
U19 SECTION 4
Angus Carey was best on ground for St Bernards with five goals, which is more than double In what was undisputedly the match of the round, De La Salle came from behind in the last quarter to defeat Northern Blues. 23 points adrift at the final change, De La kicked six goals to one to run over the top of the Blues by three points. Delle-Vergini again had a day out for the Blues, booting six majors to remain on top of the goal kicking table. For De La, Roberts and Wright were instrumental in setting up the win. Parkdale Vultures registered a huge win over a hapless Point Cook who sit bottom of the ladder with no wins and a percentage of just 17. Gallagher and Hall both registered four goals for Parkdale in the 27 goal thumping. Monash Blues inflicted St Kevins first defeat of the year by nine points at Frearson Oval. The Blues started strongly getting out to a three goal buffer at the first break. 54

XAVERIANS REIGN SUPREME … ONE IN EACH SECTION. Section 1 results went according to expectations whereas in Section 2, the first tie of 2015 was played and teams changed positions within the top four.
REVIEW SECTION 1 Old Xaverians led Prahran/ Assumption throughout their morning match and ran out winners by sixty one points. Among the best for Old Xaverians were: Captain, Andrew Barrett in his 200th game and Luke Bosnar who kicked five goals. The Hawthorn and Richmond Central match was of a high standard and was played at a frenetic pace. The first quarter provided an even contest before Hawthorn built a twenty one point by half time. Richmond Central fought back in the third quarter and trailed by only one point at the last change. Hawthorn finished the stronger and built their lead to thirty three points when the match ended. Boom recruit, Angelo Lekkas was named best for Hawthorn along with Adam Jesser and Anthony Demetriou. For Richmond Central; Todd and Robert Nolan as well as ruckman, Peter Iser were best. In an afternoon match, North Old Boys/ St Patrick’s started brightly against Ivanhoe and led by twenty two points at quarter time. Ivanhoe came back in the second quarter and trailed by eleven points at half time. Inaccuracy by North Old Boys/ St Patrick’s in the third quarter negated their strong play although they held an eleven point lead at the last change. Not to be denied, Ivanhoe regained supremacy in the final quarter which ended with the scores level. Inaccuracy contributed largely to North Old Boy’s/ St Patrick’s failure to win. Billy Zagontinos kicked five of Ivanhoe’s goals. On a balmy Friday evening La Trobe University led throughout their closely contested match against Old Geelong, which the Students won by twelve points despite being held scoreless in the 58
last quarter.
SECTION 2 Although West Brunswick scored a forty eight point win over Ormond, their inaccurate kicking prevented a much bigger margin as the “Magpies” were in control for much of the match. Their long journey for their early match in Royal Park, proved no hardship for undefeated leaders, St Francis Xavier, who triumphed over University High School/ Victoria University by one hundred and eleven points. Best for the winners were; Trent Pearson and David Daparin, who each kicked five goals. Despite being held scoreless in the last quarter, Albert Park still managed to win by eight points over Melbourne High School Old Boys, who trailed throughout the game. Louis Meyer kicked four of the “Unicorn’s goals and Albert Park Captain, Beau Coyle, with five goals, was again their star. Second placed Kew, enjoyed their westward journey because they easily defeated Westbourne Grammarians by seventy four points. The Grammarians, who were held goalless in the first half, were never allowed to gain the ascendancy. Luke Klasen, with eight goals, was among the Kew best.
PREVIEW SECTION 1 Old Xaverians will play a rare game north of the Yarra, when they play Ivanhoe. Although Ivanhoe have started well in their debut season, on form I must select Old Xaverians. Hawthorn will be all out to utilise the wide wings of Como Park when they visit Old Geelong. The “O.G.s” will give a good account of themselves but I suspect Hawthorn’s greater depth of talent will enable them to take the points. Based on this season’s form, I believe La Trobe University will continue on their winning way at the expense of Prahran/ Assumption in this afternoon’s encounter. The “Two Blues” with one win, find themselves in strange territory and they must win soon so as to take their customary THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2015
position in the top four. Richmond Central should consolidate their position in the top four by defeating the enigmatic North Old Boys/ St Patrick’s whose 2015 form has been unpredictable.
SECTION 2 Kew travel to Beaconsfield to meet the undefeated St Francis Xavier. This match could well be a preview of the August Grand Final. Kew may struggle on the bigger ground and I suspect their home advantage will also assist St Francis Xavier whom I select to win. West Brunswick travel to Melbourne High School for an early morning match, which they should win. Inaccuracy marred the “Magpies” performance last week and they must kick straighter to be sure of winning against last season’s Grand Finalists. Ormond should defeat University High School/ V.U. at Malane Street. Neither team has much form in order to recommend it and home ground advantage could well prove a key to an Ormond victory. Albert Park travel to Westbourne Grammarians for an afternoon match. All 2015 form points to an Albert Park victory. SECTION 1 Ivanhoe v Old Xaverians v Old Xaverians Old Geelong v Hawthorn Prahran Assumption v La Trobe University Richmond Central v NOBS/St Pats SECTION 2 St Francis Xavier v Kew MSHOB v West Brunswick Ormond v UHS/VU Westbourne Gr. v Albert Park
