SEASON 2022 - June 18
EDITORIAL
Tackle Your Feelings Program COVID-19 has taught us many things, but in the context of community footy, the importance of connection is at the top of the list.
Adam Baldwin Tackle Your Feelings Program Manager
Not only is awareness growing and stigma decreasing, but clubs are also going one step further and taking action. They are investing time into programs like Tackle Your Feelings and others that operate in the community football space. Some even have their own wellbeing committee, mental health game plan and a relationship with a mental health professional.
Only the absolute footy tragics would have missed the cold nights in July or waking up on a Sunday morning feeling like a premature hip replacement was imminent. However, the opportunity to connect with like-minded people three days a week during the winter is something that we all yearned for during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021.
Tackle Your Feelings is a free training program delivered by a local psychologist. It aims to help coaches, committee members, and club support staff build the skills to understand, recognise and respond to signs of mental health in their players. Since 2019, Tackle Your Feelings has been delivered to more than 6000 participants from more than 500 clubs across Australia. Through our partnership with the VAFA, more than 20 clubs have participated in the program over the past two years.
The return to the ‘new’ normal in 2022 has been a different process for everyone, with some throwing themselves back into the cut and thrust of community football quicker than others. In my role as the Tackle Your Feelings Program Manager, I see clubs from all over the country struggling to keep up with the demands of running a footy program on the other side of COVID. Whether it’s registrations in the books, numbers on the park or sponsors on the jumper, it appears there’s more work and less willingness to do it.
Tackle Your Feelings is a free training program delivered by a local psychologist
Another key objective of the program is to connect a local resource with the club so they can work together to build a practical local support network. One example of this is Melbourne High School Old Boys who put their leaders through the Tackle Your Feelings program in 2021 (and again in 2022) and have since formed a relationship with the psychologist who delivered that workshop.
However, at the same time, and maybe consequently, I’ve also witnessed a greater investment than ever before into creating an environment where people feel cared for, valued, and supported. Club leaders clearly understand they have a responsibility to the people in their community, but also an opportunity to build an environment where people want to be.
Without the financial incentives that other leagues offer, VAFA clubs have long had a reputation for being able to provide employment and networking opportunities. A strength that shouldn’t be overlooked is the ability of VAFA clubs to build environments whereby people feel connected, valued and supported. Having a mental health game plan is a key cog in this.
This trend is consistent with what’s happened at the elite level, whereby the AFL industry has invested significantly in mental health awareness, education, and support, as well as in helping players develop their non-athletic identity. Unsurprisingly, the clubs that do this the best attract the most sought-after free agents. It’s been almost a decade since the last of my VAFA seasons, and back then there was an awareness of mental health, but not the level of understanding there is in 2022. If a player was missing training or games but wasn’t injured, the first reaction would likely be that the player wasn’t committed to the group, rather than promoting an opportunity to understand why. Conversations about mental health happened on an individual basis but it certainly wasn’t part of the group’s dialogue.
Tackle Your Feelings is a partnership between the AFL Coaches Association, AFL Players’ Association and Zurich Insurance, and the program is powered by the Z-Zurich Foundation. Is there anything in the last time they met? “Who would’ve thought the sequel would be just as good as the original!”
Both of these sides have had a fortnight to ponder what might have been from their respective Round 9 losses. Uni Blues trailed by 5 points at three quarter time against St Kevin’s before a month of them running down sides caught up with them. While Old Brighton walked into an OM’s ambush trailing by 55 points at quarter time.
Remember when Anthony Hudson screamed those famous words on the final siren of the 2006 AFL Grand Final? This weekend brings about the first of the return bouts between our William Buck Premier teams in the run to September.
There were a lot of positives for both sides to take away from Round 9, despite neither side coming away with a win. After quarter time Old Brighton got the game back on their terms winning each quarter from thereon. Away from the regular contributors to the column in Harry Hill and Max Kennedy. Jordan Segar is having a terrific debut senior season. Could there be the inclusion we’ve been counting down for? Lochie Filipovic?
So, as we move into the second half of the season, will the second edition of these meetings be a case of returning serve, like the Eagles did to the Swans all those years ago, or will it be more like what Brisbane did to Collingwood in 2002 and 2003? Last time they met: Round 1, St Kevin’s def. Old Melburnians by 8 points A tight torrid affair in wet conditions greeted these two sides in the season opener. Old Melburnians had their chances late in the game to win the contest but couldn’t convert in front of goal, handing St Kevin’s and Plugger Lynch his first four points as senior coach.
For University Blues, the team that has been in every game well into the final quarter, and not to be dismissed in nearly every game they’ve been down on rotations from early on in the game. They have a crack every single week. Sam Grimley is coming off a bag of eight goals. If Filipovic comes in, and a big in at that, will Blues trump the inclusion with a big one of their own? Ayce Cordy can’t be too far away.
This time around Old Melburnians (Second on the ladder) come into this game as the in-form side of the competition. At Elsternwick Park, where they haven’t lost a game this year, they’re averaging 88.8 points per game while conceding 63.4 points per game.
Old Brighton go into this match having won the last three against Uni. And no doubt, our friends in red and blue will be comfortable reminding their opponents once the ball is bounced on Saturday.
St Kevin’s three weeks prior to the bye has shown areas of vulnerability but they’re challenges the coaching staff are embracing. Facing off against the sides they’ll see in September (Old Xavier, Old Brighton & Uni Blues) they went from being a defensive brick wall, to a leaky tap conceding 77.3 points per game, and losing two of their last three matches.
Last time they met: Round 1, Caulfield def by. Collegians by 13 points Given the paths these sides were walking in 2021, the expectation in the opening round was the Fields to blow away the Lions. Against the tide and the scripts, it was the Purple Army who reigned supreme.
At one end, lock these in - Josh Freezer & Oscar Hosking vs. Paddy Kerr & Sam Tucker. At the other end, Connor Ross, Michael Pisker, and Josh Tynan will have their hands full with Tom Baker, Jackson Paine, and Sam Dunnell running rampant. The unpredictable nature of the OM’s forward has rattled each defensive unit in the last month.
This time around Collegians won’t have Ed Greene in the forward line. He will be serving the second match of his suspension. Caulfield will be without Jared Risol as backup support in the ruck. In terms of who will be there, Jack Ellwood has put his name in lights for the Fields kicking eight goals in his previous two outings supported up forward by Oliver Lowe (5). They will head into this game with confidence having won their last two matches before the bye.
The biggest contest of the day are players who shake, rattle and roll their way through games in complete contrasting styles - The bollocking nature of Gus Borthwick vs. the smooth-moving gazelle like running of Tom Jok, the may stand side-by-side at stoppages and if they do, keep your eyes locked on that contest all afternoon. Last time they met: Round 3, Old Brighton def. Uni Blues by 6 points
Collegians had their most impressive output against St Bernard’s with 10-individual goalkickers, on their way to their highest score since round 3. On the subject of high-scores, don’t discount the Fields who kicked their highest score of the season with an incredible victory over Old Scotch.
With scores locked at three quarter time in Round 3, it was Old Brighton who won the final quarter to win the game by six points. One of only two games this year where our sharpshooter from University Blues Sam Grimley was held goalless.
There’s only ever four points up for grabs in the contest, but this points towards a classic 8-point game with more pressure mounting on the loser. While for the victors, it will ease the squeeze, if only for a moment.

Last time they met: Round 3, St Bernard’s def. Old Trinity by 60 points
ROUND 9 RESULTS
In St Bernard’s only win of the season, they put Old Trinity to the sword early in the day and never looked back. For the T’s, the margin could’ve been significantly closer had it not been for inaccuracy in front of goal.
2022 WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S
This time around, Old Trinity will go into this match as favourites. Both of their wins this year have come at the Daley Oval. They are a vastly different side at home than they are on the road. The Snowdogs, if they’re to have any chance of getting out of the bottom two, must come away winners. The highest score St Bernard’s have kicked comes from their contest earlier this year. Away from home they average just 44 points in front of goal. The one area they can hang their hat on in this particular head to head battle, is being ranked #7 for defensive, while the T’s are ranked #10 Despite their spots on the ladder, they will fight for the footy like their footballing lives depend on it, and you’ll hear all the action unfold as part of the RSN Carnival Match of the Day. Last time they met: Round 6, Old Scotch def by. Old Xaverians by 22 points The biggest rivalry in the VAFA will write another chapter this week, Old Xaverians the ones who own most of the recent history against Old Scotch. (12-3) They’ve won the last 4 matches by 44, 96, 45 and four weeks ago, 22. It’s a different Cardinals side in 2022. Old Scotch started Round 9 in a blaze of glory before the lead dissipated before their very eyes. And while disheartening as that may be, there are certainly good signs worth highlighting to get that far ahead and be able to score in quick succession. This team was the surprise packet from the opening half of the season. Since the Round 3 loss to Collegians on the road, they’re averaging 83.6 points per game, good enough for a 2-1 record. The blip against Old Melburnians. Old Xav’s kicked the competition’s highest score of the season in Round 9, and produced the greatest winning margin of the season. That will help their cause from a percentage point of view (rising 14%) with scoring down across the competition. Xavier Richards is the other in-form full forward William Buck Premier. 3 games, 13 goals. Hugh Longbottom and his defensive Scotch unit will have a tough task on their hands. We’ve seen the Cardinals upset University Blues in Round 1 to open the season. Will they open the second half of the season with another boilover? James Byrne and the Xav’s mafia won’t be hearing a bar of it. Wherever you look this weekend, and beyond, if the second half of this season is as action packed as the first half then we’ll be holding ourselves in good stead for the run to September and the finals to complete the trilogy.

9 Rounds Down, 9 To Come AJAX were off to a flying start down at Gary Smorgon Oval, taking advantage of the off-guard Bloods. Old Haileybury quickly recalibrated to diminish the Jacker’s 17-point lead, heading into the halftime break in front by 3. From there, the game was Old Haileybury’s to lose as they extended their lead to 26-points. Jack Munro worked hard to lift the forward line with help from Lachlan Treverton and Lachlan Riley around the ground. For the Jackers, Charles Hamilton’s repeated efforts in the middle alongside Matt Lincoln’s determination for the ball showed no signs of wavering despite the final 35-point margin. Old Haileybury will look for redemption against The Sharks in round 10, hoping their home ground advantage will result in a better outcome. Meanwhile, AJAX will be keen to secure two from two against CY.
Round 9 is over and We’re Halfway There. This week, Fitzroy pulled out all the stops to defeat De La Salle. Old Haileybury triumphed over AJAX as did Beaumaris over St Bedes Mentone. Lastly, Williamstown conceded a 92-point loss to Uni Blacks as they remain undefeated on top of the table, begging the question if anyone can beat the Blackers, or is that Livin’ On A Prayer? Opening with an inspiring smoking ceremony from Uncle Bill Nicholson Jr, Brunswick Street Oval was set for Fitzroy to take on De La Salle. The first half favoured De La as Seb Filipovic continued to bring the heat alongside Adrian Indovino securing three goals. Exceptional backline pressure from Thomas DeaneJohns and Steven Karvellas kept Fitzroy to a mere 1 goal 6 heading into halftime. Fitzroy weren’t going to concede the four points that easily. The Roys fought back in the third quarter and headed into the final term with a 2-point lead. Ted Clayton and Donovan Toohey played pivotal roles in wrestling the game onto the Roys’ terms, as did hard-working forward Jules Turner with his 3 crucial goals. As Fitzroy’s famous song suggests… fight for victory they did with a final score of 6.9-45 to 5.8-38. Fitzroy will enjoy a two-week break as they look to the bye in round 10 while De La head to The Carey Sports Complex to face off against the Panthers.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
In front of a home crowd at Banksia Reserve, Beaumaris were awarded a convincing 79-point win over St Bedes Mentone. The Sharks were up and about from the first siren to the last, heading into the second quarter with a 17-point lead. This margin grew each term thanks to Callum Heath and Robert Cathcart’s precision in front of goal, scoring 4 and 5 each. Thomas Tyquin and Lachlan Willey put up a great fight for the Tigers. Meanwhile, Brayden O’Toole continued to lead by example and was not only named amongst the best for the Tigers but also lead the goal kicking for his side with 3. After the Queen’s Birthday break, 2nd play 3rd as Beaumaris and Old Haileybury go head-to-head while St Bedes Mentone face the Uni Blacks as they continue their reign.

Uni Blacks remain bulletproof after their 92-point victory over Williamstown. The well-orchestrated Blackers knew how to make the most of Melbourne University Oval with Austin Steere and James Carpenter doing what they do best in front of goal. For CY, Akin-Ilker Dinler’s persistent efforts coupled with Declan Edwards forward 50 pressure saw Williamstown lift in the second half. After the break, the Blackers are off to Brindisi Oval to face the Tigers while Williamstown head home to battle AJAX.

Round ten, and the cat is suddenly thrown amongst the pigeons, mark II If round nine in Premier C Men’s said, “it’s time I shook this competition up a bit”, then round ten said, “you ain’t seen nothing yet”. Here’s what took place over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
of the second term a long afternoon seemed on the cards. From there though, Old Geelong were to be allowed only another two goals for the rest of the day as Parkdale clawed back the initiative. The margin was clawed back to 22 at the half, and 14 turning for home, but it is in the final term where Parkdale really went to work. A return of 4.6 whilst holding Old Geelong scoreless was enough to seal the points, the final victory margin of 16 ensuring that the club song was sung loudly and proudly in the home rooms at Gerry Green Reserve. Dylan Glascott was Parkdale’s only multiple scorer with two, with Dan Knowles their best. Toby Lever and Liam Higgins kicked two goals each for Old Geelong, with Sam Harrison strong for the vanquished.
Ormond regained form with a resounding clatter under the Friday night lights, scoring a ten-point win over the ladder leaders Hampton Rovers that owed as much to grit and tenacity as it did to style and flair. Ormond started well enough, taking a two-goal lead from the first quarter and holding that advantage for most of the night. Rovers being three players down by half-time did not help their cause one bit, but that would be to downplay the fact that whilst Rovers had plenty of the play, Ormond were cleaner when it mattered and capitalised on the turnovers that they created. Hampton Rovers were in no way disgraced, but the resolute defence and sure ball handling of the brown-and-blues ensured that there was no way back into the game from them. Tom Buckley kicked three for Ormond, for whom Will and Jack McCartney both did a sterling job. James Keys kicked two goals for Hampton, with Sam Clements a winner on the night.
Old Mentonians hosted Preston Bullants and the game was as good as over at quarter time, as the undermanned Bullants conceded 40 points to a solitary behind of their own. Nobody can accuse this Preston side of a lack of heart, but they were outclassed here by an Old Mentonians unit determined to create some mayhem. They had no answer to Tom Morecroft, who kicked a season-high eight goals, nor to a stingy defence that allowed them a mere four goals for the day, half of these coming in a mid-third term flurry. Morecroft was a unanimous choice for best afield, while Angus Grant and Tom McCarthy were also standouts for the rampaging Panthers.
Some of the best victories come on days when the team isn’t quite at its scintillating best, but does what it needs to do to ensure that the win is banked. The win is still worth four points, but it says even more of the team’s character that they can do the hard work when it’s needed. This was one such day for Old Ivanhoe. UHSVU came to play here, there’s no doubt about that, but the boys from Chelsworth Park kicked the only five goals of the first half, and this proved decisive. Whilst UHS-VU kicked the first two of the second half to reduce the deficit to 18 points, Old Ivanhoe were able to steady from the half-way mark of the third quarter and pull away in the final term. UHS-VU’s inaccuracy didn’t help them much, but in reality Old Ivanhoe were too solid to let this one slip. Luke Scuderi with five, and best-afield Harrison Frazer with four contributed all but one of Old Ivanhoe’s goals. Ben Cracknell and Ben Dimattina flew the flag best for UHS-VU.
Monash Blues reclaimed top spot on the Premier C ladder, but not without one heck of a battle from a Marcellin side that for three quarters gave every bit as good as what they got. After Monash got the jump early in the first term, Marcellin responded in kind to only trail by a point at the first change. This was extended to eight at the half-way mark, but Marcellin continued to throw all that they had at their more fancied opponents to go to the last break only four points in arrears. Sadly for them this is where their resistance was broken down as Monash’s twelve last quarter scores netted them 6.6, while Marcellin could only land one goal in response. The win will look comfortable enough in future years, but that will belie the struggle to get there. Lachlan Rush kicked three goals for Monash with Matthew Capetola kicking two. Nick Darling with three goals and Beau Harris two were strong for Marcellin.
In terms of stirring, backs-to-the-wall victories, Parkdale Vultures will see this as one of their very best. The Vultures gave up four goals before they got on the board themselves, and when Old Geelong kicked the first goal THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star Nominee Ruby Ford (Oakleigh) The VAFA congratulates Ruby Ford from Oakleigh on her Round 9 Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star nomination. Ruby enjoyed a breakout game in the Krushers win against Glen Eira kicking a match winning 3 goals and being named in the team’s best players. What the club said: Ruby has brought with her a lot of energy and enthusiasm in her first year of senior football with the Krushers after a successful junior career with the Oakleigh Dragons and has quickly become a very popular & important member of our team. Her hard work and dedication on the training track is starting to show through gameday with her ruck work and marking when playing forward providing plenty of highlights. All of us at the Oakleigh Krushers are super proud of Ruby and her rising star nomination and are looking forward to watching her play in the Red White & Blue for many games to come.
Men’s Rising Star Nominee Riley Alexander (La Trobe University) The VAFA congratulates Riley Alexander who has claimed the Round 9 men’s rising star nomination. Riley kicked 3 goals as part of La Trobe’s 46 point win on the weekend that saw him push further ahead on the sharpshooters table with 36 for the season. What the club said: Riley made a great start with La Trobe in 2021, placing second in our Senior Men’s goal kicking in a Covid shortened season. This year he has continued that form. After a solid preseason and adding a kilo or two he has matured into a key forward, consistently creating opportunities for team mates as well as adding to his own goal tally. His energy, desperation and freakish ability to win the ball are inspirational, as is his resilience given the attention he receives. Everyone at La Trobe is proud of Riley’s contribution to our club, and we look forward to him enjoying further success. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

Big bags of beautiful goals and the sleeping giant awakens Round 9 action was some not to be missed in Division 1, with the top 4 starting to pull away from the competition, whilst a wild card emerged, and they might just be ramping up as they need too.
The game of the round was a tight battle between Kew FC and Glen Eira, a game in which really did shape the way the Gryphons first half of their division 1 campaign could be assessed. With Kew lingering around the top of the table having only suffered the solitary loss it meant that Glen Eira would need to bring their A-Game to be within a sniff of the potential flag favourites out at Kew’s home ground. The lead never stretched further than four points at a major change, given Glen Eira did not miss a goal until the 3rd quarter it would need to be a mighty effort to keep the streak going. Coming in to the last was Kew 1 point ahead of the hard finishing Gryphons, they fell 2 agonising points short of one of the potential wins of the season. As for Kew, a hard fought and gritty win against the flow in ways should give them an enormous amount of confidence headed into the bye.
Old Peninsula and St Mary’s Salesian, with the latter currently sit at the bottom of the table being winless in 2022. It was a hot start and strong kicking that put the right foot forward for the Pirates, however it could have been a great margin if accuracy went their way. Leading the way was 400 gamer Sean Payze who ended the game with two majors to his name in a 36 point win, acting as a good little buffer for the now 3-6 for the season and proving to be a team that can win with some confidence. PEGS faced the dangerous Therry Penola in wet and windy Saturday afternoon conditions. The boys of Essendon have been the in form side for 2022, and booting 8.1 in the first quarter certainly proved their class as they flexed their muscles and ran away 57 point winners over a tough and fighting Lions outfit, who managed to keep the PEGS side to just 30 points in the second half of football. For PEGS their major hitters in the MacDonald brothers and Fenner in goals got the job done and kept the league on notice that they are the ones to watch.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022
The surprise match-up of the round between Oakleigh and Prahran Assumption. The Krushers have been unbelievable this season compared to their last, and with Prahran showing some cracks but also some raw talent it was always going to be a hard game to read. From my perspective the power of Cloke in the Oakleigh outfit would prove too strong for Prahran, however the roles were reversed and the men from Assumption came out firing. They exerted their authority in front of goal with 17.16, moving them to 5-3-1 for the season and placing them just 1 spot behind this class Oakleigh outfit.

The final game of the round saw the return of the reigning minor premiers for 2021 in Old Camberwell, as they looked to get back on the winners list against an inconsistent Whitefriars. The game started the way of the Wellers with a 26 point advantage into the first break. They are a dangerous scoring side. As the game progressed, the scoreboard kept ticking in their favour, with Lachie Powell booting 6 majors after his 5 last week – it shows that this mid-season recruit is vital to the success of this team, now leaving them 4-4-1 on the season and on the cusp of launching a late season assault at the top 4.

After 406 days, they can finally say “I’ve got the Power” A Premiership fancy is seemingly on the slide. Another has bolted up the table, while after 406 days in the wilderness the boys from Power House reigned supreme.
Yarra Old will run into MHSOB for their next assignment, and with the Unicorns on shaky ground at the moment this one isn’t a foregone conclusion.
Power House has been written about every week since round 3 of last season as another loss, but the signs of improvement are there. Finally, after 406 days they walked off a venue triumphant in victory.
For the second consecutive week West Brunswick have come away winners, and MHSOB have walked away losers. A tight opening half was busted open by the Magpies with 8-goals to three in the second half to catapult themselves up to third place on the table.
By no means did they have it easy, as it was heartbreak for Manningham going down by two points on their home turf. The win ends a run of 16 straight losses and no doubt they belted out the tune with plenty of gusto. Singing the praises of Jeremy Hill in recent weeks as the shining light, his six goal best on ground performance has him shining as bright as the sun this week.
A fortnight ago the Unicorns sat at the top of the tree and are now seemingly in free-fall as they drop to fourth place. Despite being named amongst the best, Julian Eimutis didn’t seem to have the same level of dominance and output in this contest as he would’ve liked. The Magpies have kicked into gear after the after-thesiren heartbreak to Brunswick, Lee Stringer the best player on the ground with Ben Hutchins (3) and Billy Irving (2) kicking the goals up forward.
Can they roll the momentum of the win into their next match against Aquinas after the bye? The home crowd will surely be in full voice at Ross Gregory Oval. Ready to end the run of losses at home – 1,063 days ago they last tasted success at the home track.
Ted Ajani Reserve is the next venue West Brunswick will trek too, facing Bulleen Templestowe in Round 10.
The Cobras are now the side languishing at the bottom of the table, they fought back from 16 points down at half time to make the second half a genuinely tight tussle but the siren beat them in the end. They will face off to Old Parade when footy resumes with the aim of cutting a 5-match losing streak.
The Ants ran into an explosive Ivanhoe AFC on the weekend. The team locked in for a top 2 finish last week further cemented the statement made last week with a 110 point win. 12 individual goal kickers amongst the 25 goals they kicked for the day. Vivian Blackmore-Moore (3) was named as an emergency for the Collingwood VFL team over the weekend, his output may be enough to see him elevated next weekend. Scott Selwood (3) came in for his second game of the season but the plaudits in front of goal go to Nick Godfrey (4) in a best on ground performance.
The boys from Garvey Oval were inaccurate for the day against Yarra Old Grammarians but were strong enough to walk away winners by 42 points to stay in touch with the top four. Anthony Cafari (4) has kicked goals in every game he’s played this year as the focal point in the forward line. James Kappos and Thomas Cooper were able to dominate the contest for the Paradians.
The Ants will no doubt be disappointed in the final margin of the game. It’s the first time in the season they’ve conceded 100+ points to the opposition but if you’d offered the team three wins from the opening half of the season, from where they’ve been in recent years, one would assume they’d have taken that.
The Bushrangers called on Liam Marshall (3) in the forward line and Darcy Wilmot in his first senior outing for the year to support their cause.

Round 10 becomes a tantalising match up for the Hoers who will face off against the second placed Brunswick side in what could be an early Grand Final preview. Brunswick kept Aquinas at bay after trailing at quarter time. A 6-goal to one second term gave them a 28 point lead at half time, before holding the home-side goalless in the final quarter to register a 48 point win. Jasper Paevere (4), Joshua Hedley (3) were the main forces forward of centre. Hedley, in his first game for Brunswick was put up by coach Tom Hunter as the best player on the ground. After a strong start to the year, Aquinas have just one win to show from their last four matches. The bye comes at the right time to regroup, reload and go again in the back half of the season.

Wickers continue streak, Hawthorn on the board again Melbourne absolutely proved that footy is a winter sport on Saturday, gifting us nothing but misting rain and cold wind to make sure we were committed enough to sit through whole matches of the game we love so much.
Hawthorn have beaten North Brunswick at Allard Park by 36 points, jumping out of the gates to kick six goals in the first quarter. They’d be their only goals for the half, with the Bulls limiting the Hawks to no score, before the script was flipped, and the home side were denied any scoring shots in the third term. Some missed opportunities from North Brunswick in the final quarter meant the Hawthorn ran away with it as Justin Raiti and Luke Piccolo both kicked three each for the whole game, and Cooper Rule snagged two. Eamonn Avery was best-on. The home side’s four goalkickers were Sam Willatt (2), Dylan Ross (1), and Jake Horwood (1), with the latter his team’s best.
With almost no VAFA footy next weekend due to the Queen’s Birthday bye, Division 3 Men’s made sure we were all well and truly satiated with enough antics to tide us over until round ten. There’s not much else to say about Elsternwick, who have continued their unbeaten form after somewhat of a scare, while things have gone from bad to worse for the Westbourne Grammarians despite a valiant effort on the weekend.
Eleven goals straight were kicked in the first term at Westbourne Grammar, where Canterbury ultimately ran away 152-point winners against the Westbourne Grammarians. The Warriors, to their credit, were competitive and scored four in the first quarter, but it was a Cobras onslaught from beginning to end, with 16 goals kicked in the second half, after 13 in the first. Positively, the home side had five individual goalscorers, with Benjamin Johnson kicking two, but it was Benjamin of the Hodge variety who was named best-on. Canterbury had nine goalkickers, with Thomas Lowden’s eight goals earning him top honours, but riding shotgun were Ryan Murray (6), Jordan Dear (4), Nicholas Szabo (3), James Boarotto (3), and Rohan Walmsley (2).
It was a stressful time at Bennettswood Reserve for both teams and their cohorts, with much on the line as Elsternwick ran away six-point winners against Emmaus St Leo’s. The arm wrestle was there all game and the lead never straying too far for the Animals, who ultimately couldn’t get on top despite a late fourth-quarter rally. Matt Hill (2), Dan Hill (2), Jonathan Greensides (2), and Nathan Bird (2) were the only multiple-goalscorers, with the latter celebrating his 50th game for the club, while Zac Kearns was named best-on. For the away side, Julian Yeatman kicked three goals and Nicholas Lowrie two, while Matt Ball (2) topped the best players list.
When footy returns, it’s a battle of 3 v 4, with Emmaus St Leo’s travelling to Canterbury Sportsground to take on a Canterbury side on the warpath. The Animals will be spending the break rueing a missed opportunity, while the Cobras will be riding the adrenaline of their thrashing round nine win.
Not even seven individual goalkickers could get Parkside over the line at Pitcher Park as South Melbourne Districts left the ground seven-point winners. The Bloods held the upper hand for the better part of the day, limiting the Red Devils to just two behinds in the third term, before the home side gave their opponents a bit of a scare. Jamie Brooker (4), Oliver Dufficy (3), and Jason Clifford (2) kicked most of South Melbourne Districts’ majors, with the former taking top honours. For the home side, Matthew Holden kicked three goals but it was Jack Hamilton (1) who was best-on.

The Sharks get a much-needed win as La Trobe and St Johns prove too good Round 9 in Division 4 saw matches won comfortably and one that went down to the wire. The round sets us up for an incredibly exciting next round whilst illustrating the chance to play finals footy is anyone’s for the taking.
After an even first quarter, St John’s took the ascendancy in the second term kicking three unanswered goals to open up a 16-point lead at half time. The third saw the Falcons turn up their defence, replicating the three goals that St Johns kicked in the quarter. Going into the final quarter with the JOC’s 13 points up the match was anyone’s for the taking. St Johns was the team that took the game and ran away with the win kicking 5 unanswered goals and leaving with a 47-point win.
Box Hill North took on La Trobe in what was going to be an uphill battle for the Demons. La Trobe proved why they were the best in the competition as they got off to the best possible start kicking 6 unanswered goals and ended the first quarter with a 40-point lead. The second quarter saw the Demons lift their defensive intent only allowing two goals from La Trobe for the quarter to take their lead out to 55 points at the main break.
The best for the JOC’s include Nicholas Terrill, Brendan Ash and Corey Ely. The best for the Falcons were Daniel Young, Mitchell Kingston & Jack Lee. Rohan Scott followed up his day out against Masala with five goals with other multiple goal scorers for St Johns being Benjamin Ayache (3) and Jason Naffa (3). Goal scorers for Albert Park include Nick Armistead, Alexander Evans and Brett Tottenham.
It was a much more evenly balanced second half with the Demons going toe-to-toe with their more fancied opponent. The damage of the first term was the writing on the wall for the afternoon as La Trobe’s lead was one that couldn’t be brought back, coming off the ground winners by 56 points, a lead that could have been larger if it weren’t for inaccurate kicking.
St Johns will now face a big task as they take on Swinburne in what could very well be a finals preview whilst Albert Park will host Masala in what is set to be a great match.
The best for the Demons include Beau Parthenides, Rowan Lawrence & Peter Cassidy-Marsh. La Trobe’s best were Thomas Whelan, Tyler Cosa and Samuel BenettiBaker. Lachlan Gawley-Price was the only multiple goal scorer for the Dees with 2 majors whilst La Trobe’s goals came through Riley Alexander (3), Patrick Lindsay (2), Tate Spiteri (2), Liam Walsh (2) and Bryce Dowler (2).
The final match of the round saw Eley Park seeking their second win of the year, take on Masala who were looking to significantly increase their finals chances. The match started incredibly even with the majority of the game being spent in the midfield, but it was Masala that held a 1-point lead at quarter time.
Box Hill North will now have the bye in round 10 before hosting the in-form St Johns. La Trobe will host Eley Park who will be coming into this contest with newfound confidence.
Eley Park would then take a big step in the second adding on four goals and take a 19-point lead into the major break. The third saw Masala lift their defence as they held the Sharks to a goal to bring the margin back within 11 points at the final change.
Round 9’s most important match saw St Johns host Albert Park in a match that could potentially set up the rest of the season. A JOCs win would further consolidate the top three whereas a Falcons win would put them right in the mix and open the season up again for the rest of the league.

The best for the Tigers were Luke Decarne, Christian Samuel and Dale Gibb. Shark Tom Johnston led the goal scoring with 4 whilst other contributors for the Sharks were Drew Crawford (2), Ben Field (1) and Shannon Blewitt. MILESTONES
VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Ben Huggard (St Bernards)
50
Best wishes to Ben Huggard who lines up for his 50th Senior game this week. A St Bernards Junior, Ben moved into U/19 ranks and played at Calder Cannons before making his senior debut in 2018. In that year Ben won VAFA State U/19 Rep honours, played with Essendon at VFL level and was a member of our 2018 Premiership side. With his speed, athleticism and raking left foot, Ben has established himself as one of the young guns in our developing Senior line up. Well done Ben!
Andrew Petsinis (Glen Eira)
100
Congratulations to Andrew Petsinis on reaching the 100 game milestone. A terrific club man over a number of years, ‘Wheels’ has played Seniors, Reserves and Thirds football – wherever he’s selected he has given his all. A terrific achievement and we look forward to seeing Wheels dash off half back for a few years yet.
Tim Blackburn (Ormond)
150
Timmy began playing for the Ormond juniors in the U/9s. He played in the senior premiership in 2018. He also played in the 2013 senior grand final and was runners up in the senior Best & Fairest in 2014. Congratulations from everyone at Ormond for achieving this milestone.
Henry Simon (Ormond)
150
Hank began his football for the Ormond Juniors in Auskick. He then progressed to the senior club where he won a senior B&F in 2012. He played in the senior premiership in 2018 and played in senior grand finals in 2013 and 2015. Congratulations from everyone at Ormond on reaching this milestone.
Sean O’Keefe (St Bernards)
150
Congrats to Sean O’Keefe who lines up for his 150th game this week. Sean joined the club Under 16s from Flemington Juniors, developing through Under 19 ranks into open age footy in 2015. Since then Sean has progressed into a regular in the Ressies. A good mark, Sean’s versatility to play tall back, go forward and pinch hit in the ruck has been a feature of his game. We look forward to seeing Sean adding many more games at ‘the pit’. Well done Sean!
Aaron Kinghorn (Aquinas) Starting at the club in 2003 Kinga hasn’t missed a season since and has been a mainstay of the club through good times and bad. He has won 4x Reserves BnF as well as a top 3 finish in the Senior BnF in 2011. A premiership winner in 2017 he also played in 2 losing Grand Finals in 2007 and 2019. A dominant ruckman in his prime he has transitioned to a more than handy forward late in his career kicking bags of goals regularly. Most importantly though Kinga is a great person and is regularly seen giving advice to younger players just starting out in their football journey.
300
All at Aquinas OCFC congratulate Kinga on a wonderful career and wish him luck for Saturday.

Marcellin break their losing streak, as West Brunswick take St Kevin’s to the wire Coming off a strong win last round, Caulfield Grammarians were looking to build on their momentum and take another win against Old Xaverians. Caulfield were playing with strength early on, showing tackling pressure to fend off the attack of Old Xaverians. It was Caulfield who showed command and took their scoring opportunities to have the upper hand early on. Old Xaverians were strong with the ball at times but Caulfield were too quick through the middle.
As the half time siren sounded, it was all tied up. It could go either way from here and Kew wasted no time at all showing Melbourne Uni that they weren’t going to let this game go easily. From this point Kew continued to raise their work rate forcing turnovers and blocking Melbourne Uni’s ball movement. If Melbourne Uni did get some possession going, it wasn’t long before Kew were there to stop the run. The third quarter was all the difference in the game, as Kew kept Melbourne Uni scoreless but scoring themselves to set them up for the final term. In the final term Kew sealed the win with two more goals, keeping a tight hold on second place on the ladder.
The backline of Old Xaverians were under pressure and were doing well to keep themselves out of danger, limiting the scoring chances of Caulfield which set things up for an exciting second half. After the main break the battle continued and some strong goal kicking in the wind helped Caulfield to start making some room between them and Old Xaverians. There were times where Old Xaverians were able to link up well and get the ball through the defence of Caulfield. Even when they got through, they were unable to get the goals needed to stay level with Caulfield. The final term saw Old Xaverians get their hands on the ball more and take the fight right to Caulfield, unfortunately their inaccuracy continued which allowed Caulfield to capitalise on their early lead and come away with the win.
Marcellin have had some unlucky losses throughout the season and their match between St Marys was a battle to stay off the bottom of the ladder. Marcelling started off well, but it was St Marys who had the ball in hand more. The early run saw St Marys lining up for goal but the strong winds denied them from having any impact at all on the scoreboard. Some effective ruck work from Marcellin saw their clearances go up, which had an immediate impact for them on the scoreboard. The strong offence continued from Marcellin and they kept control of the play for the majority of the first half. They went into the main break with a comfortable lead, having held St Marys to just one point. This would continue in the third term for Marcellin where they were able to cut off the offense of St Marys. St Marys struggled throughout the last half to get the ball inside 50 when they had the ball and Marcellin were able to take full advantage on the rebound and capitalise on the scoreboard. Although St Marys were able to cause some turnovers at times, they struggled to complete the plays and ended the day on just three points. For Marcellin they now have their first win on the board for the season and stay off the bottom of the ladder.
With Melbourne Uni in the fight for a spot in the top four it was another must win game for them, when they came up against Kew. Kew came out and made a statement early, getting on the scoreboard and putting Melbourne Uni on the back foot. Melbourne Uni weren’t going to go down easy and raised their attacking pressure after the initial scare to kick two unanswered goals. The game slowed down somewhat after the first quarter as the ball spent a lot of time around the middle of the ground. It was a hard fought contest with Kew eventually breaking through to score a much needed goal to bring them within a point.

With West Brunswick fighting for fourth place it would take their absolute best to get a win against competition heavyweights St Kevins. West Brunswick brought the heat early on and were able to get St Kevins to do something we have seen much this season, which was turnover the ball. West Brunswick were hot in defense and the ball movement that St Kevins have displayed so often throughout the year was slowed heavily. This resulted in a game where the ball was being won often on the ground. It showed that West Brunswick were up for the fight and the game could go either way.

At the end of the first quarter, the game was all tied up, if West Brunswick could keep this pressure up, an upset win was on the cards. Despite the same pressure from West Brunswick in the second quarter, St Kevins were able to find the gaps in the defense. Overall St Kevins produced a better attack in this quarter, they controlled the ball for longer periods and were impactful on the scoreboard. This allowed them to get some space between West Brunswick and breathe easier. St Kevins continued to keep ahead of West Brunswick, the third quarter was more of an arm wrestle like the beginning of the game. It was West Brunswick in this term that showed they weren’t going down easy. Their pressure went up again and they had St Kevins worried, causing mistakes in the attack of St Kevins. In the end St Kevins continued to press and showed why they are sitting firmly on top of the ladder. Holding on to win a close one.
