SEASON 2022 - June 25

EDITORIAL Jason Reddick CEO

In this, my first editorial as VAFA CEO, I would like to thank the extended VAFA community for the warm welcome I have received since the announcement of my appointment.

of producing the competition’s next 5 year strategic plan, and Clubs will soon receive survey documents as part of our consultation process, ensuring that our key stakeholders are fully engaged.

The significant number of well wishers has given me great confidence that we have a multitude of people equally as passionate about the Amateur competition, who are willing to work together to deliver a VAFA that we can all be proud of.

Another key document that is being produced is an updated Constitution. The Board announced at the recent Members Meeting that this will be tabled for Clubs to vote on at the next Annual General Meeting. Again, we have invited Clubs to join our working party to draft this important governing document.

I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work done by former VAFA CEO Brett Connell and his team. ‘Bear’ and I played footy against each other and have respectfully crossed paths on our personal journeys through the football industry. Bear’s contribution to Amateur football and his efforts guiding the competition through the challenging COVID years, is greatly appreciated by us all.

I trust that Clubs are seeing a strong focus from headquarters in engaging Clubs and working together to overcome the challenges we are all facing and maximising the opportunities that also exist to make our competition the benchmark in all areas. Working together through respectful relationships and communication with all stakeholders is a strong focus of mine. To this extent, it has been really pleasing to see some positive feedback from several Clubs in the past week, expressing their thanks for the recent good work done by a number of our VAFA staff. We have a dedicated team on board and we will continue to strive to meet and exceed your expectations. As I said to the Presidents at the Members Meeting, whilst we cannot expect to satisfy every Club wishlist, we will continue to make decisions in what we consider to be the best interests of the entire VAFA competition.

Bear’s contribution to Amateur football and his efforts guiding the competition through the challenging COVID years, is greatly appreciated by us all.

Speaking of challenges, the effect COVID has had on both the Competition and many Clubs in season 2022 is clear, with decreases in the number of umpires, players and volunteers, when compared to the 2019 season. The VAFA Board and administration are undertaking purposeful engagements with Club representatives to get a clear understanding of their needs and how we can support our Clubs through this period. All directors are attending matches each week and our Club Development Manager, Sean Walker, is continuing to make weeknight visits to various Clubs and recording valuable feedback. I will do a combination of both, in order to build relationships and understand the various industry perspectives.

Beyond the weekly office work, I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible at an Amateur match in the coming weeks.

Whilst addressing some immediate concerns, we also have an eye to the future. We are in the formative stage

Enjoy your footy!

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S Joe Pignataro

Access team lists on GameDay via the VAFA website or the GameDay App on your mobile device.

Back to school, the old-fashioned way Three of the five games in William Buck Premier this Saturday will be played on the humble surfaces that our clubs were established, created and for a majority of the players in the old boys sides, where they started their football journey.

Kevin’s are back on top. Xav’s are sitting in fourth. Angus Hart, Tom Jok, Cam Hodges face up against Ed Delany, Will Gowers, Marcus Stavrou. The biggest task will fall on the St Kevin’s defence in stopping Xavier Richards who is averaging four goals a game in his senior career in red and black. Xav’s have kicked the highest score against SKOB this year, the 18-man press was broken down.

So as we dust off the old blazer jackets, knot up the tie, tuck the shirt in and get that top button done up. What can you pack in your school lunch for this weekend’s action? The two oldest schools who are credited with playing the first game of Australian Rules Football, Scotch College (Old Scotch) and Melbourne Grammar (Old Melburnians) will head to the College for their 101st head-to-head meeting.

Pack yourself a couple of cold bottles of water, you’ll need it to cool yourself down because it’s sure to get hot, heated and spicy in the contest.

While OM’s reigned supreme in the battle for the Australian Cup in Round 7, Paul Satterley’s team are out to atone for their Round 10 loss to St Kevin’s with the aim of being in the top two ahead of the double bye.

The third of our College games heads the way of the Snakepit where St Bernard’s will face University Blues. The on-field issues at Blues is highlighted in their scoring. Despite Sam Grimley leading the sharpshooters, around him, the output and return on the scoreboard isn’t there as Guy Martyn would like.

An even spread of goalkickers and an unpredictability in front of goal has been the modus operandi for OM’s this year. Whispers are growing into roars that Jackson Paine and Sam Dunnell could return to the forward line of the Navy Blue making the Cardinals challenge even tougher.

It’s been over 12 months since they kicked 100 points in a game. They may see this as the game they break that drought as the Snowdogs are in a world of hurt. Inaccuracy hurt them in Round 10 against Old Trinity, kicking winning scores has been even more of an issue for Paul Groves’ men in 2022.

It’s been a long time since Old Scotch have been beaten when they return back to the College with an average winning margin in recent years sitting at 61 points. They’re a different side than the pre-season predictions, a different side at Camberwell Sports Park, and, clearly, an even stronger force at the school.

If St Bernard’s fans are looking for something to cling to, they haven’t lost to University Blues at the Snakepit since 2016. But even then, the most passionate of fans will know this is clutching at straws. Blues welcomed back skipper Ayce Cordy last weekend, and after 5 weeks of watching the come-frombehind wins on the sidelines, then experiencing a loss last week. He won’t want to go into the double bye with 21 days to think about how their season could well be over if they drop this game.

Pack yourself some paper towels or napkins in the lunchbox because there’ll be sure to be some rough and tumble spillages that need cleaning up with the Cardinals not taking a backward step in this one. Two years ago, the former voice and face of the VAFA Nick Armistead wrote about getting the ties and blazers out for St Kevin’s and the Claret and Stout. A headline he couldn’t have been any more prouder of. And, it seems fitting to again put the call out to the proud members of both St Kevin’s and Old Xaverians to join the RSN Carnival Match of the Day commentary team at St Kevin’s College.

Pack yourself the Uncle Toby’s muesli bar. A staple in everyone’s lunch box, because this should be a staple victory for the University Blues. It’s not Brighton Grammar but Brighton Beach Oval where Old Brighton are flexing their muscles and making the trip uncomfortable (like always) for opposition sides.

The 90’s powerhouse travel out to the modern-day powerhouse with the latter doing everything they can to emulate that of the former. Like a year 12 in his final assignments taking a peak over the desk to copy the work of his or her classmate.

The Tonners have won their last 6 matches at home and last week’s win over Uni Blues pushed them back into the top two. Collegians are 3-2 away from home, and won’t be a pushover, Jared Rivers has been fortunate to have a couple of players back available for selection. Ed Greene this week should come back in and compliment Dave Mirra in the forward line.

Can Xavier emulate what they did in Round 7? If that game is the precursor to this one, you will not want to miss this. St THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

How the Purple Army curbs the influence of Harry Hill will be worth keeping an eye on. It may be a case of him and Sam Hibbins shaking hands at the start of the game and saying “I’ll see you at the end.” They may be opposed to one another but be the burst player away from the stoppage. Pack yourself an umbrella, not just because your bayside but because it may well be raining goals if either side gets on a roll with momentum. Glen Huntly Oval plays host to the final game of the round, and it’s got “classic 8-point game” written all over it. Caulfield are one of the three scalps Old Trinity has claimed this year and after their Round 10 win over St Bernard’s they’ve walked away believing they can scalp the Fields again. They’re 2-2 in the last month, and have set themselves for back-to-back wins in this fortnight between Queen’s Birthday and the double bye. Ed Weatherson hit the scoreboard last week, Alex Polidoris is expected to join him this weekend, while the synergy Harry Thompson has with Harris Mastras and Tom Paidoussis at his feet is growing every game. Perhaps the QB bye came at the wrong time for Caulfield who gathered all the momentum with a terrific win over Old Scotch was swallowed by Collegians. Matt Buntine and Tom Bugg were key inclusions for the Fields, but couldn’t get the ascendancy or the game on their terms for the afternoon. There is an opportunity to do so this weekend, one area that has let the Fields down has been their inaccuracy in front of goal and the inability to capitalise when in possession of the footy. Pack yourself a stress ball because this one is set to go down to the wire. Whichever ground you’re at this weekend, be it a College game, bayside or over the fence from the racecourse be prepared to see the 220 names players having a red hot crack, because with “school holidays” (a double bye) on the horizon they’ll want to leave nothing on the table.

Panthers pounce on a hapless De La Salle Uni Blacks secured a comfortable 85-point win over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers at Brindisi Oval. It was Groundhog Day for Uni Blacks controlling this game from the first siren to the last. Good things certainly came in threes for the Blacker’s with Jordan Quaile, Nicholas Hey and Austin Steere all booting 3 goals each. Their defensive pressure kept the Tigers from converting in their forward half with SBMT struggling to take advantage of scoring opportunities. For SBMT, Lachlan Willey and Liam Hiscock continued to battle on despite the score line, as did Chris Mangoni with his intensity through the middle. Round 11, Uni Blacks go head-to-head with Old Haileybury while SBMT look forward to a 3-week bye. Only time will tell whether this extended break is a blessing or a curse.

Melbourne’s weather put on a show this Saturday with sunny blue skies, giving teams a glimpse into September with that finals footy feeling. Around the grounds, AJAX prevailed over Williamstown at Fearon Reserve, while The Uni Blacks defeated St Bedes Mentone by 85-points. Beaumaris battled to retain their spot on the ladder in a tight match against Old Haileybury and Old Carey tick off their first win of the 2022 season in a close game against De La Salle. AJAX upset the home side in Williamstown defeating CY by 27 points. A close opening term saw Williamstown in front by 2 points. Bradley Tucker recorded 5 goals for the day with fantastic accuracy in front of goal alongside Jordan Busuttil and Oskar Manton placing crucial pressure on the ball. In the end, it was AJAX who ran away with the lead. The Jackers forward line were firing at Fearon Reserve with nine different goal scorers including Kane Nissenbaum, Brandon Joel and Brandon Efron recording 3 goals each. It is clear, the synergy and unity among The Jackers is converting into points on the scoreboard and as they slot into 4th on the ladder, they are ones to keep your eye on in the second half of the year. Next week, Williamstown will head to Brunswick Street Oval for an ANZAC Day rematch against Fitzroy while AJAX host the up-and-about Panthers at Gary Smorgon Oval.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

Beaumaris fought hard down at Princes Park Oval to keep Old Haileybury at bay. Old Haileybury had their eyes set firmly on the prize, leading by 7 points at the halftime siren. Debutant Noah Gown proved himself as an asset securing himself 4 goals for the day, as did William Paul with his outstanding forward 50 pressures. Heading into the third term, The Sharks smelt blood. Captain Joel Di Natale and his 2 handy goals played a key role in lifting his team, alongside Callum Heath and James Taylor bringing the intensity at every stoppage. In the end, this margin proved too much for Old Haileybury, conceding a 20-point loss. Next week Beaumaris head to The Dairy Bell to face De La Salle and Old Haileybury continues their tough run as they head to Melbourne University Oval to face the Blackers.

In a nail-biting battle between De La Salle and Old Carey, the Panthers came out on top, clawing their first win of the season by 13 points. This seesawing affair had fans at Carey Sports Complex on the edge of their seats as De La trailed by 1 point heading into the final quarter. Riley Thompson and Lachlan Summers’ veracity and confidence to create space around the ground acted as a catalyst to secure the four points alongside a huge 7 goals from Daniel Clarke making De La’s defence pay. De La’s Fraser Cameron and Harry Hawker worked hard all day to get their team over the line, with Thomas Lyngberg putting in a notable performance in front of goal. This game shows significant improvement for The Panthers, re-writing the script from their previous 87-point loss against De La in round 5. Can Old Carey keep their streak alive in round 11 against AJAX? De La will be hoping to change their luck as they head home to face the in-form Sharks.

Round Eleven: the “Something for Everyone” Round vital nature of the victory. Four goals continued Tom Morecroft’s recent purple patch, with Angus Grant also kicking four and Kyle Conlon also contributing strongly. Jack Caspersz kicked three for Mazenod, for whom Liam Welsford was their best.

High scores, close contests, upsets; no matter what your poison, there was something for you in round eleven of Premier C Men’s. Hampton Rovers hosted Parkdale and it was an odd game in which there were many shifts in momentum and opportunities missed, but in the end the high-flying Rovers saw off the challenge of an in-form Vultures line-up to arrest a two-game losing streak. Rovers had six changes in this match, which affected their cohesion, and this combined with Parkdale’s ability to hunt well in the middle of the park turned this into a scrap which began with only one goal in the first term. Hampton took the initiative by kicking four goals to two in the second quarter, but this one was tight all day and Parkdale had levelled up by the opening minutes of the final term. The Vultures had their chances, but the tale of the match was told as their forwards could only manage 1.4 in the final term to finish five points short. Ben Marron kicked three goals and the evergreen Danny Corp two for Hampton, with Scott Ebbott their best. Liam Purcell was the main goalkicker for Parkdale with two, with he and Lloyd Bailey best for the Vultures.

UHS-VU went goal-for-goal early with Old Geelong, kicking two of the first four goals to be level half-way through the first quarter. Sadly that was as good as it got as Old Geelong took a stranglehold on this match. They steadied to lead by 20 at the first change, and from there UHS-VU did not see their heels for dust. Although they kicked four goals of their own in the second term, Old Geelong kicked nine to lead by 51 at the main break, and thereafter it was all about the boys in the hoops, with Geelong kicking 15 goals to one solitary major in the second half, in a show of power designed to scare the rest of the premiership contenders. Best-afield Joe Griffiths and Liam Higgins kicked seven each for Old Geelong, with Nick Freeman also strong. Gerard Hawkins kicked two for UHS-VU, with James Healey their best on the day. Ormond continued their recent return to form with this 156-point obliteration of Preston Bullants. Ormond started with a rush, seven early goals giving them a 30-point lead at quarter-time, and though the Bullants got one early in the second stanza there was not much for them to be happy about for the rest of the day as Ormond set about building their percentage should it be needed later on. The brown-and-blues led by 69 at the half, and then kicked nine goals in the third term and seven more in the last to only three replies from their opponents. Tom Buckley starred with seven goals for Ormond, with Jack McCartney contributing six and Jack Mason being their best. Pat Taylor kicked two for the Bullants and Ethan Lowe battled hard all day.

Old Mentonians gave notice that they intended to be right in the finals hunt with a stirring 25-point victory over a well credentialled Mazenod side. Mazenod took the early lead, but the match was won with a seven goal to two burst by the Panthers from late in the first quarter to early in the second, as Old Mentonians turned a quarter-time deficit into a five-goal lead. Mazenod came back hard at their opponents from that point on, but could only go goal-for-goal with the Panthers rather than eat into the lead that they had built. While it is far from panic stations for the Nodders, this result combined with Ormond’s big win punts them out of the top five and places Old Mentonians level with them on points, emphasising the THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

The Ivanhoe train, that had been rattling along just nicely, was derailed by a plucky Marcellin side that cared not for reputation nor ladder position in a stirring victory. Marcellin took the four points on the back of four goals from Lachlan Rush; whilst Luke Scuderi, who had potted 27 goals in his previous five outings, was kept to just one by a desperate Marcellin defence. Old Ivanhoe had six more scores than their opponents in the first quarter, but only led by six points, which told its own story as they had nine extra shots for the match yet trailed from the middle of the second term to the end. Marcellin, by contrast, were clinical in front of goal, converting ten of their 14 attempts. Ry Elphinstone and Daniel di Paola were excellent for Marcellin, while Jordan Stanton and Harrison Frazer were standouts for Old Ivanhoe.

SKOB Saints full of pride! The St Kevin’s Old Boys Football Club celebrated its inaugural pride round for its three women’s teams with a triple-header at TH King on Saturday. Senior player Grace Mills designed t-shirts with all funds going towards charity, Minus 18. The day featured a sponsored pride guernsey, luncheon, fundraising avenues and special banners. SKOB’s pride round has had widespread impact, enabling important and open conversations. Jason Ball spoke to the playing group in the lead up, which was extremely well received. There was a hiccup leading into the day, with the opposition forfeiting their reserves team due to insufficient numbers, but in true women’s football community spirit and with the help of head coach Tommy Purcell, four VAFA clubs put their hand up to offer a scratch match as they knew the importance of the day. West Brunswick, Melbourne Uni, Monash Blues and Mazenod went above and beyond to find players that could form one team, playing as the Pride Allies. With West Brunswick coaching the team, Melbourne Uni supplying the jumpers, Mazenod providing a trainer and Monash having lots of players putting their hand up, it was truly a team effort on the day in the name of pride. Stephanie Augustes, who was instrumental in the organisation of the day, said the community spirit in the reserves match was one of the most incredible things she’d ever been a part of. “We were so grateful for these clubs as they knew the significance of the day for us and the broader community.” The Thirds played against Melbourne University who also offered St Kevin’s a home game so the day could played as a triple header, while the Seniors played Old Xaverian’s and had a great contest. SKOB Saints Head Coach Tommy Purcell, “it was the best day I have experienced in 30 years of coaching.”

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star Nominee Lara Hausegger (Yarra Old Grammarians) The VAFA congratulates Lara Hausegger on being nominated the Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star this week. Lara produced a best on ground performance, along with a goal in Yarra Old Grammarians 18-point win over Collegians last weekend. What the club said: Lara is a natural footballer, coming through the Yarra Bushranger junior feeder program. At only 16 years old, Lara has already achieved much in her short football journey, winning multiple club and league Best and Fairest awards and playing representative football for the Oakleigh Chargers and Vic Metro programs. It did take Lara a couple of weeks to feel comfortable at the senior level. However, her form over the past month has been sensational. Playing as a mid-forward, Lara wins clearances and consistently hits the scoreboard from anywhere inside the 50. Lara loves playing footy and is driven to improve her game. Everyone at the Yarra Old Grammarians is ecstatic about Lara winning this nomination. We love watching her develop into a star and know her future at Yarra and beyond is bright.

Men’s Rising Star Nominee Tom Rattray-Wood (Old Ivanhoe) The VAFA congratulates Old Ivanhoe’s Tom Rattray-Wood who is this week’s Men’s Rising Star nominee. In recent weeks Rattray-Wood has put together strong form in Premier C and been a key reason for Old Ivanhoe’s surge up the ladder. What the club said: Tom commenced his career at Old Ivanhoe in 2021 directly from the school, where he played a starring role at Centre Half Back and Ruck in the Under 19’s. Polling in every game he played. Unfortunately the shortened season stopped Tom from making his senior debut. In 2022, Tom completed a very solid pre-season with the expectations of holding down a key position in the back line, but due to circumstances, Tom found himself being the clubs first ruckman. Each week he comes up against bigger opponents and has accounted for himself extremely well. Tom is blessed with an amazing leap, good hands and a real appetite to tackle. Every Hoes on baller has received some amazing service from the work Tom delivers. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

The race for the top 4 heats up in Div 1 Men’s Moving on to the matchup between Therry Penola and Prahran Assumption, these two sides meet at a pivotal part of their respective seasons. Therry Penola is always an interesting case as they are a side that can really get after you if you leave the door open, and that’s exactly what Prahran Assumption did on Saturday afternoon. Not only did they leave the door open they welcomed them right inside, not hitting the front for the entire afternoon until the final quarter where they managed to squeeze home a 9 point victory off the boot of Matthew Clifford and his 5 big ones to get them over the line.

To kick things off for round 10 action, we saw the top take on the bottom with the ladder leading Kew travelling to the bottom of the table St Marys Salesian. It didn’t take long for the dominance to be on display, with Kew roosting home 14 majors in the first half of football, with their forward line on display with 5 different multi goal scorers. This game was always sure to be a simple execution for the Bears and with a 122 point thumping that’s exactly how it went down. The next game on the agenda was sure to be a cracker and it lived up to the hype, as Old Camberwell stared down the barrel of PEGS for a Saturday afternoon blockbuster. It was always going to be hard to separate the two and the scoring indicated just that, with 4 points being the largest lead into any break either side was going to look to their goal kickers to get the job done. PEGS have been dominant in closing out games in 2022, and they managed to kick away from this Camberwell outfit, to run out 20 point winners, with best on game honours going to Alec Binns and his 2 goal performance for PEGS.

The final game of round 10 action went down at Packer Park, where Glen Eira set out to secure the 4 points over a fluctuating Whitefriars at their home ground. It was a quick start that set things well for Glen Eira as they kicked away early and maintained for a comfortable win at home, and it was probably a moment now for Whitefriars where you now want to see what can happen over the next 8 rounds, and see just how many wins you can scrape together in the process for the remainder of the season. For Glen Eira, this is a really good statement for them and their ambition to stay around the mark for a potential top 4 as the season begins to wind down.

Moving into a clash that would really help shape the race for the top 4 with Oakleigh, who heading into the game were sitting in 4th, and Old Peninsula who are currently sitting in the middle of the table. With Oakleigh being able to kick big scores and dominate at please it was going to be hard for Old Peninsula to take the 4 points, but it certainly didn’t go without effort. Leading into the half Old Peninsula had dominated Oakleigh leaving them with just 1 major to the half, and coming into the 4th quarter they had still maintained a 5 point lead. It was not to be for the Old Peninsula outfit sadly, with Oakleigh flexing their muscles and kicking away off the Boot of Aaron Cloke with his 7 majors. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022

Ivanhoe AFC. It’s theirs to lose. After Round 8 VAFA Media locked Ivanhoe AFC into the top two of Division 2 Men’s. After the weekend just gone, lock them into a spot in the Grand Final. Anything short of the final Saturday of the D2 year is a season gone begging.

Much like Ivanhoe, they’ve had three 100+ point wins this season which is helping their percentage be where it is. Keeping them above MHSOB and Old Parade who are on the same amount of wins to this point of the season. After three straight losses, the Ants have a chance to get back on the winners list this weekend when they travel out to Koonung Park and face Manningham Cobras.

Other than a 12 point loss to MHSOB in Round 2, the Hoers have taken it all before them to this point. They’ve now accounted for Brunswick twice this season, won three games by over 100 points and have three players, Ash Close (28), Billy Drake (23) and Vivian BlackmoreMoore (22) in the top 8 on the sharpshooters list.

Old Paradians were sitting 2-3 after Round 5. Since then, they’re on a five game winning streak and recapturing their best footy through the middle of winter. Their biggest win of the year was set up with 11 goals to three in the first half, followed by another 10 goals in the second half.

All three of those men kicked 10 of the 13 goals kicked by the black and white in the 35 point win on Saturday. Brunswick were held to just three goals in the opening three quarters of the match. The Wickers have struggled to score against the ladder leaders in both encounters this year, being held to 7-goals in both games.

Brock, Camande and Cafari all kicked four in the victory. While Muller (4) hit the scoreboard for the Cobras. The biggest challenge for the men from Garvey Oval comes this weekend in the form of Brunswick. Will they make it six in a row or do the Wickers get themselves back on the winners list?

They’ve got 8 games to get it right before they’re likely to meet again in the first semi-final come September.

Despite being inaccurate in front of goal, MHSOB came away from Round 10 with a 34 point win over Yarra Old Grammarians. The Unicorns extended the lead at every change to get back on the winners list after back-to-back losses.

West Brunswick in third spot added 21% to their overall tally with a 122 point win over Bulleen Templestowe. 11 different goalkickers had a hand in the Magpies kicking 22 goals for the day. It was all over at quarter time with an emphatic 10-goal to one opening term. From there they didn’t look back as Irving (4) and Hutchins (4) led the way.

Petro Pirozek has played two games this season, either side of the Queen’s Birthday bye and been dominant for MSHOB. Can he, and Julian Eimutas through the midfield along with Ashan Wijayakumara up forward be dangerous enough against Ivanhoe AFC on Saturday? Aquinas produced a hard-fought 39 point win over Power House to round out Round 10. After holding a 4-point lead at half time, they broke their back kicking 11 goals to 4 from then on to take the points. Matt Aver (6) was the focal point up forward, his season tally is now up to 15. Supported by Glennie, named the best player on the ground.

It was a different looking Power House than the last time these sides met in Round 3. They came into the contest with a full head of steam after claiming their first win in Round 9. While the AFL parades the tantalising match-ups in Round 15. In Round 11 of Division 2 Men’s, every game will have a flow-on effect towards the ladder. Each club is competing against another side within 3 spots of them on the ladder. We couldn’t have a more evenly contested round coming up.

Wickers Weakened, Cobras continue winning streak five-goal final term from the Bloods sealed the deal. Julian Yeatman kicked all four of his side’s goals, while Richard Main took top honours. For South Melbourne Districts, the dynamic duo was at it again, with Leigh Sfetkidis (5) and Oliver Dufficy (4) sharing most of the goal kicking load, as Shaun Wilson was named best on.

VAFA footy finally returned this weekend, and with it, Division 3 Men’s reminded us of the very reasons we’re all so invested. Elsternwick have had their winning streak cut short and have been knocked off their perch on top of the ladder, none other than by their fellow previously-Division-4 friends in South Melbourne Districts, while Parkside’s narrow loss to Hawthorn has seen them drop to sixth.

The rivalry only grows between Hawthorn and Parkside after the home side took home the win by six points at Rathmines Road Reserve. The Hawks bust out of the gates early to take a 24-point buffer into the first break, and the Red Devils kept coming but were never fully able to get on top. 8 individual goal kickers helped get Hawthorn over the line, with Willian Meehan (4), Justin Raiti (3), and Cooper Rule (2) doing most of the heavy lifting, but it was Charlie Boots who was named best on. For the losing side, both Jackson Hubbard and Simon Mackie kicked three majors each, while Samuel Gilfedder (2) and Benedict Douglas (2) rode shotgun, with the latter taking top honours as best on ground.

All of this to say that the second half of the season provides every opportunity to change a very tight top 4, with a few teams knocking on the door and waiting for their chance to pounce. A seven-goal first quarter has seen Canterbury take the win against Emmaus St Leo’s by 54 points at Canterbury Sportsground. In a stark contrast to their last encounter, the Cobras were on the front foot from the get go, their quick ball movement no match for a lost-looking Animals side who had zero answers. John Nicolopoulos (5) once again starred in front of goal for the home side, while Jordan Dear (3), Thomas Lowden (3), Ryan Murray (2), and Nick Szabo (2) all got on the board too, but it was Mark Collins’ midfield prowess that sealed the deal in a best on performance. For Emmaus St Leo’s, Matt Hill (4) continued his goal kicking ways, and Nathan Bird (2) and Dan Hill (2) all rode shotgun. It was Jonathan Greensides (1) in his 100th game for the club who was named best on.

A relatively low-scoring affair at Kevin Bartlett Reserve has seen Richmond Central get the W against North Brunswick by 26 points. The Snakes took the lead early and while it was never unassailable, the Bulls couldn’t get a look in, only managing two goals per half. Thomas Rivers kicked two goals for the home side and was the only multiple-goalscorer out of seven goal kickers, while Damien Holland was best on. For the Bulls, Ashley Rae, Patrick Notaro, Daniel Royal, and Dylan Ross all kicked one goal each, but it was Andrew Ramzy who took top honours.

South Melbourne Districts have evened out the ledger against Elsternwick and in the process pinched top spot on the ladder, winning by 42 points at Lindsay Hassett Oval. The Wickers appeared to be in all sorts for much of the game, not registering a major until the third term, but the spirited effort got them back within twelve points. It wasn’t to be though, as a

Emmaus St Leo’s will have their work cut out for them this weekend when they welcome Parkside to Bennettswood Reserve. Both sides are looking for redemptions after losses in round ten. Holmes Todd Oval is the destination for the battle between Elsternwick and Canterbury. The Wickers are coming off their first loss of the season, while the Cobras’ hefty win in round ten sets them in good stead. Richmond Central and Hawthorn managed to get wins on the board in round ten, and as such both sides will be on the hunt to continue that form at Kevin Bartlett Reserve. After two weeks off, the Westbourne Grammarians face a tough ask against South Melbourne Districts at Westbourne Grammar. The Bloods are seemingly peaking at just the right time and will be full of confidence after knocking off the ladder leaders in round ten. North Brunswick have the bye in round eleven.

Elementary for La Trobe, as Spicy Footy gets hold of the Falcons Swinburne hosted St Johns in what was set to be another good contest and a potential finals preview. Both teams started fairly slow and defensive, but it was the Razorbacks who took a narrow 6-point lead into the first break. The second quarter saw a more attacking quarter from both teams however, it was the JOCs that were a bit more hungry as they took the lead heading into the major break with a 1-point lead.

Round 10 was a great round for those that love highscoring footy and big goal hauls with tallies of 14, 9, 7, 6, 5 and multiple 4-goal hauls. Round 10 also gave us a glimpse at some of the fixtures we could see come finals whilst setting up an important round 11 for multiple teams. One of the best matches of the round was the Masala vs Albert Park clash. The Falcons started off the quickest of the two teams getting off to a 2 goal lead. Masala then had the chance to advantage of having the most possession in the second quarter but inaccurate kicking cost the Tigers as the team added on 7 behinds in addition to 3 goals. Albert Park however was able to capitalize as they added another 5 goals in the second quarter to hold an 18-point lead going into the major break.

The third quarter saw the Razorbacks take charge and turn on their attacking game style as they kicked 5 goals to St Johns’ 2 to regain the lead and go up by 15 points with a quarter to play. The final quarter saw another attacking quarter from both teams as a total of 9 goals were kicked for the quarter. However, it was the Razorbacks that kicked 5 of those goals whilst the JOC’s kicked 4 leading to an important 23-point win for Swinburne which put them in a good spot as we commence the second half of the season.

The third quarter saw a major change of momentum as the Tigers found their form and kicked 7 goals to Albert Parks 3. Masala’s break came towards the end of the third when Tiger Noah Scott slotted 2 quick goals to send the Tigers into the final break with a 9-point lead. The final quarter was the best quarter of the game and saw both teams take their game to another level. Albert Park took an early and small lead over the Tigers in what was a goal-for-goal, sea-sawing affair and held on until the final 10 minutes of the game when Masala flicked a switch and kicked 3 unanswered goals to run away with the win in what was a great game of football.

Swinburne’s best were Phillip Wild, Nick Coad, Declan Watts and Zachary Cooke whilst the best for the JOC’s were Nicholas Terrill, Ethan Hope, Rohan Scott and Corey Ely. Swinburne’s goalkicking was led by Nick Coad who added 7 goals to his season tally with other contributors including Joseph Zambelli (3), Samuel Hodges (2) & Zachary Cooke (2). Rohan Scott put in another impressive shift for the JOC’s with 5 goals whilst Jason Naffa (2), Steven Sullivan (2) and Benjamin Ayache (2) added to the scoreboard.

Masala’s best included Declan Fowler, Shehan Rodrigo and Jake Dunkley. The best for the Falcons were Josh Rennie, Sam Lee and William Marshall. The major goal kicker for Masala was Declan Fowler who added another 9 goals to his impressive season tally, other goal kickers included Noah Scott (2) and Tom Williamson (2). Albert Park’s goal-scoring load was shared around with Jack Lee (4), Brett Tottenham (4), Reece French-Lightfoot (3) & Alistair Lupo (3) contributing to 14 of Albert Parks’ 18 goals.

Swinburne will look to continue this form as they make the trip down to Dandenong to take on an in-form Masala. St Johns will face Box Hill North in what is a must-win game for both sides. The final match of the round saw La Trobe take on Eley Park in what would be a game where we would either see La Trobe get a huge win or the Sharks navigate their way to another thrilling win. La Trobe got off to a massive start kicking 9 goals to 2 and immediately opening up a dominant 46-point lead. Eley Park needed to find a spark in the second to get back into the game but the spark couldn’t be found as they could only manage 1 goal as La Trobe added on another 7 goals and extended their lead out to 88 points.

Masala will look to bring the same energy as they face another tough opponent in Swinburne. Albert Park on the other hand will look to rebound as they come up against La Trobe.

MILESTONES

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!

Thomas Marsden (Old Scotch)

50

Congratulations to Tom Marsden on reaching 50 games for the Old Scotch Football Club. Tom joined the club from Scotch College in 2018, spending his first two years in the Men’s under 19s. He moved into the senior ranks in 2021, where he has played in the Men’s 2nd XVIII, 3rd XVIII and under 23s. We wish Tom all the best on reaching this milestone.

Jack McIntosh (Old Scotch)

100

Congratulations to Jack McIntosh on reaching 100 games for the Old Scotch Football Club. Jack joined the club from Scotch College in 2013, spending his first two years in the Men’s under 19s. He moved into the senior ranks in 2015, where he has played in both the Men’s 2nd and 3rd XVIII teams. Jack was a member of the 2017 Premier ‘B’ 3rd XVIII Premiership team. We wish Jack all the best on reaching this major milestone.

Ash Close (Ivanhoe AFC)

100

Ivanhoe Amateurs congratulates Ash Close on his 100th game for the club in Round 10. It’s been a decade since Ash, aka Moose, helped take the Hoers to the D3 grand final, topping the competition goalkicking with 104 goals and scoring 13 more in the finals. Since his return to the club as senior playing coach in 2020, he’s lost none of that brilliance in front of the big sticks. Ash is one of the top guns on the D2 sharpshooters list, with 28 goals, including three in a strong win over finals aspirant Brunswick in Round 10. He started as a junior at Ivanhoe, played under 19s in 2010, and by 2011 was kicking bags of goals for the seniors in D3. He donned the Big V for the VAFA tour of Ireland in 2013. Ash has developed into a highly respected leader and astute tactician, sharing his knowledge from several years working at Collingwood, playing in the Magpies’ VFL team and at Northcote Park in the Northern league. He has taken the Hoers to the top of the D2 ladder this season, having won eight straight to date. Everyone at Ivanhoe AFC is enormously proud of Ash’s achievements so far and genuinely excited about the prospect of finals action “for the good old black and white”.

Luke DiLizio (St Bernards)

100

Luke Di Lizio is set to rack up his 100th game for the club this week. A St Bernards Junior, Luke progressed through Under 19 ranks before making his senior debut in 2017. Luke was selected for the VAFA State U/19 side in 2018 and of course played in our all conquering B Grade Premiership side that year.. After a brief stint for Queenscliffe Luke returned to ‘the pit’ this year to become an important part of our senior line up. Good Luck Luke!

Charles Pearson (MHSOB)

100

Congratulations to Charles ‘Chuck’ Pearson on reaching the 100 game milestone for the MHSOBFC. Charles was a stalwart of the reserves side that finished runners up in 2015. A regular member of the seniors squad since 2017, Chuck’s ability to lace out targets using both feet and mark strong in the air makes him a significant force down back. It’s not all defense for Chuck though as he also poses a massive threat when moved to up forward with his 26 goals during the 2019 campaign being his highest tally and rewarding him with the Reserves Leading Goalkicker. A key member off the field as much as he is on it, Charles is a leader to many and was appointed as co-captain of the reserves in 2022. We wish Charles the best of luck and a massive congratulations for this great achievement and we look forward to him pulling on the green, maroon and black for many seasons to come.

St Kevins dominate again to keep Old Xaverians scoreless Kew came out hot putting the back line of Marcellin under pressure within the first few seconds of the game. The ball was coming into the Kew forward line hard and fast forcing the Marcellin backline to scramble. The hot start for Kew resulted in missed opportunities on goal which helped keep the door open for Marcellin. The play was more measured in the second quarter with Marcellin stopping the momentum that Kew held early on. In the second quarter possession was distributed evenly between the two teams and it seemed that Marcellin had stopped Kew’s momentum. The effort across the ground was rewarded for Marcellin with them ending the quarter with a narrow lead to go into half time. There was a nasty collision early on in the third quarter that stopped play for some time and saw players come from the field. When play did resume it was Kew who took back the momentum. This quarter saw both teams score just one goal and set up the final term for an epic finish. It was a tussle for the first few minutes of the final term, with the ball going end to end on many occasions. It was Kew who broke through to to kick the opening goal and put them in prime position to grab the win. They followed up with another goal quickly and gave them a narrow lead. Marcellin kept fighting and eventually they kicked an incredible goal to keep themselves in the game. It was Kews game to defend and they held off the attack from Marcellin to win by just four points.

It was a battle of third and fourth on the ladder between Caulfield Grammarians and Melbourne Uni. With a loss to Kew in round nine this game was a must win for Melbourne Uni to put some breathing space between them and West Brunswick. Melbourne Uni put their mark on the game early, scoring four unanswered goals in the first quarter. Defensively they were sharp too, keeping Grammarians to just the sole point. The third quarter saw Caulfield up their pressure on Melbourne Uni, they were forcing turnovers and taking some strong intercept marks. Caulfield were able to keep their pressure up over the length of the quarter and it paid off with them kicking two goals and limiting Melbourne Uni to just one very early. Melbourne Uni were trying to spread the play across the ground, but Caulfield were sticking with them in a one on defence. The suffocating pressure of the defence kept the ball out of the Melbourne Uni back half and set up for a great last quarter. Victory was there for Melbourne Uni, they just had to control the play in the last quarter to hold on. The start of the quarter was everything Melbourne Uni needed, winning clearances off hitouts and controlling the ball on the ground. Melbourne Uni continued to work hard, controlling most of the play in the final term. A penalty got them the goal they needed to seal the victory. The win for Melbourne Uni was enough to keep themselves one game ahead of West Brunswick and hold on to fourth spot on the ladder.

Week after week it seems that no one can get close to St Kevins and this week it was Old Xaverians turn to take on the ladder leaders. In true St Kevins fashion they were hot on the attack early. The ball spent most of the quarter in the St Kevins forward line, kicking three goals including an impressive snap straight out of the ruck and one right on the quarter time siren. The second quarter saw St Kevins continue right where they left off. Their attacking game was blazing and they added three more goals to their tally in quick succession. At times Old Xaverians got through the middle of the ground and inside their fifty but St Kevins were able to thwart any attempts at goal. Another goal on the siren gave St Kevins a 55 point lead at half time. Despite the strong lead St Kevins did not take the foot off after the main break, continuing to attack hard. St Kevins gave Old Xaverians no room when they got hold of the ball and did not break their pressure even with an 80 point lead at three quarter time. Defensively St Kevins were also at their best, not allowing Old Xaverians a single shot at goal for the entire game. It was an 83 point victory in the end for St Kevins, who now hold a percentage of 595 on top of the ladder.

West Brunswick were in need of a win to stay in touch when they came up against St Marys Salesian. In under a minute West Brunswick opened the scoring and had the first goal of the game. They continued to stay strong in attack from here and had a solid three goals in the first quarter. St Marys struggled from early on in the game to keep up the pace with West Brunswick, it was always West Brunswick who were first at the ball. This allowed West Brunswick to control the possession throughout the game, but they were untidy in possession and this kept them from generating a larger lead. As the game went on West Brunswick continued to stay one step ahead of St Marys and capitalise on the mistakes that were made by St Marys. On the rare occasion that possession fell with St Marys it wasn’t long before West Brunswick were there putting pressure on the ball carrier and forcing a turnover to win the possession again. In another hard day for St Marys that managed just one goal and West Brunswick won the game by 80 points.
