The Amateur Footballer 2024 - Week 15

Page 1

As most readers of this article will already know, popular St Kevin’s player Michael Pisker, suffered serious head and eye injuries after an accidental collision during SKOB’s Round 12 game against Uni Blues.

Michael has remained in an induced coma in the intensive care unit of the Alfred Hospital since being admitted that day and continues to receive the best medical care.

Obviously due to the seriousness of the injuries there has been enormous coverage of this incident through reports airing on television, in newspapers and on social media.

I was recently interviewed by a journalist on my views on the response from the VAFA Community to this incident. I responded by saying how enormously proud I am of the manner in which the VAFA Community has come out to support Michael, his family, and each other since this traumatic event occurred.

Michael’s family have launched a Go Fund Me appeal to raise funds to assist with his recovery and have been touched by the generosity of people far and wide who have contributed to the fund so far.

You can help support Michael’s road to recovery by donating at:

Outside of those closest to Michael, attention needed to turn to supporting his teammates, broader members and supporters of the Club, as well as players from Uni Blues and other Clubs who felt affected.

This is exactly the area where the

VAFA Player Assistance Program

I also stated that the response from our VAFA Community did not surprise me as the Amateur culture has long been one to battle hard on the ground for four points, but always support one another in times of need.

is so valuable

Incidents such as this put the daily off field concerns and on field competitiveness of a football season into a clear perspective.

The impact such an incident can have is far reaching. My greatest respect to St Kevin’s President Patrick Mount and his fellow committee for the tireless work undertaken in ensuring that the family and friends of Michael are being supported every step of the way since the incident occurred. Patrick has managed such a stressful situation most professionally and ensured communication of the immediate needs of Michael and his family have been rightly prioritised in all subsequent situations.

This is exactly the area where the VAFA Player Assistance Program is so valuable in providing three free counselling sessions for any VAFA player seeking confidential support for any mental health need. A reminder to all our VAFA players that this service is available 24/7 via phone, on line or in person, and easily accessed through three avenues:

1. Download the ‘Converge’ app

2. Call Converge at 1300 687 327

3. VAFA website, Club Admin, Club Support, to access the Converge Portal and Website

From all of us at the VAFA, we wish Michael all the very best for his recovery and thank everyone who has reached out to express concern, provide support and deliver assistance to Michael’s family, friends and team-mates.

We also encourage all our VAFA community to continue to look out for each other and provide that support that we are traditionally renowned for.

Old Xavs consolidate Top 4 in Premier Men’s

Old Xavs won the battle for 4th spot while the league-leaders kicked a game-and-a-half clear after Round 13 of William Buck Premier Men’s.

Old Xaverians took a huge step towards September as they outlasted Collegians at Harry Trott Oval.

They led by 2pts, 1pt and 8pts at the changes before Ed King’s goal levelled the scores at the 19-minute mark of the last quarter.

Xavs responded with goals to Dan Tuddenham and Charlie MacIsaac to seal a huge victory for Xavs who move a game clear of the reigning premiers and two clear of Uni Blues in the race for September.

Dan Donati (Old Xavs): “Absolutely rapt for our boys to get a win against last year’s premiers. With so many stoppages, it became a game of inches and we probably won the battle on the inside.

“Genuine team performance in those conditions, but special mention to Alec Spralja who was tireless in the ruck all day feeding the mids who all had great impact. Some wonderful defensive efforts from Bowen and Hart were crucial.”

Jordie McKenzie (Collegians): “It was a great battle and a highstandard game in challenging conditions. We played the game in our forward half enough and gave ourselves enough opportunities to win.

“We had many strong efforts. Jasper Davy continues his great year with a pivotal role down back, and Kenny Ong gave his all as always.”

The first draw of the Premier Men’s season saw Old Melburnians & St Kevin’s play out a 6.12 (48) nailbiter.

SKOB entered with thoughts of injured teammate Michael Pisker front of mind and it became a roll-up-the-sleeves struggle with just one goal in the opening term and 2 apiece in the second as St Kevin’s headed to the major break with a 7-point lead, which they carried into three-quarter time.

The final term was a thriller with OMs booting the first two goals to hit the front at the 19-minute mark – the first time they had led since the 12-minute mark of the opening term.

SKOB responded with a goal at the 24-minute mark to regain a 3-point lead, before the last 3 behinds of the game to OMs saw the final siren sound at 6.12 (48) apiece.

A critical 2 points for OMs lifts them out of the drop zone.

Paul Satterley (OM): “We entered with a real awareness that the SKOB lads had endured an extremely traumatic week so our messaging was just control what we could and be very respectful to Plugger and his boys.

“The result was fitting as both sides missed some gettable chances late. For us, Adam Richardson, Ned Nichols, Lachie Templeton & Sam Wundke were important.”

Anthony Lynch (St Kevin’s): “I just want to say how proud I am of our club and, in particular, the players. Playing was genuinely in question at the start of the week given the challenging events of last weekend.

“OMs had a real crack from the first bounce and the game was played at a high intensity for 4 quarters. Both teams had opportunities to win it but in the end the draw was probably indicative of the evenness.

“I would like to publicly thank everyone within the VAFA community for the incredible support of our club and in particular the Pisker family. It makes us incredibly humbled to be part of such a wonderful competition and community.”

That result opened the door for Old Scotch to make up ground in the race for second spot and they did so with a hard-fought 21-point win over University Blues at Melbourne Uni.

The Blues held Old Scotch to a solitary goal in the first half while booting 4 themselves to lead by 20 points.

But the Cardinals rallied after half-time, kicking 3 goals to 1 to close within 9 points at the last change.

They piled on the pressure in the final term, slotting the only 4 goals to pull away to a 21-point win that moves them within 6 points of SKOB in the race for second.

Mark Gnatt (Old Scotch): “This was our best win of the season. We were down to 2 rotations in the second quarter and then a 20-point deficit at half-time.

“The boys showed great resilience to get back in the game and then finished very strongly. Our leaders stepped up - Jelbart, Easton, Lawrence, Hays and Franetic - and James Tarrant was brilliant.”

Guy Martyn (Uni Blues): “We were really pleased with our first half - strong in the contest, our pressure was right up and our ball use was reasonably efficient.

“Totally different story after half time. Scotch sliced us up with the ball and dominated contests all over the park. A really disappointing second half after a first half that offered so much.”

It was a massive game in the race to avoid relegation as St Bernard’s hosted University Blacks at the Snake Pit, with the victor to kick a game clear of the drop zone, while the OMs draw meant the loser would slide down into it.

Blacks led by 5 points at quarter-time and 6 at the half in a game seemingly destined to go down to the wire.

But St Bernard’s had other ideas and booted 4 goals in the first 8 minutes of the third quarter to open a 19-point lead.

The final quarter belonged to Edyn Sibbald – the St Bernards spearhead kicking 4 goals to finish with 7 for the afternoon as the Snowdogs raced away to a critical 35-point win that moves them a game plus 16% clear of the Blacks in the race to remain in Premier Men’s.

Steve Alessio (St Bernard’s): “Our improved form has been building over the last few weeks. After an even first half, it was pleasing to see us dig in with a solid second half.

“It was the grit of many of our players to dig deep and do their bit for the team which shows me this young group wants to move forward together. That’s exciting for our club.”

Dale Bower (Uni Blacks): “We failed to bring the required effort to match St.Bernard’s for 4 quarters. We will need to find a way to get back to our Blacks brand of footy ASAP.”

The final match of the round saw Old Brighton stretch their lead at the top with a win over Fitzroy at Brunswick Street.

The Tonners set it up with 5 goals to 1 to lead by 28 points at the first break. Just one goal in the second quarter extended that to 34 at the half.

The third term provided much of the same – a single goal kicked by Old Brighton, who edged out to 43-points up.

The Royboys finished strongly with a 4-goal final term but the result was never in doubt – the Tonners scoring a comfortable 35-point win.

Marcel Bruin (Old Brighton): “Our group started really well, hitting the scoreboard efficiently through the first quarter. Credit to Fitzroy - they lifted their intensity, got to work at contest and defended strongly.

“Really happy to get through the miserable conditions with the win, driven by some strong performances from Nic Pavlou, Alfie Jarnestrom and Campbell Tweedie.”

Travis Ronaldson (Fitzroy): “Old Brighton started hot and showed why they are the top team, with some impressive ball use. We worked our way back into the game and had a good second half but could not bridge the gap.

“Heath Ramshaw was strong in the midfield, Rhys Seakins provided plenty of drive on the wing and Caleb Harward was in and under all day.”

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER WOMEN’S

Purple Army ambushed by swooping Magpies

Round 13 saw the race for finals tighten up, with crucial games going the way of Caulfield Grammarians and West Brunswick, while three teams were held to a goal or less in another weekend of wintery conditions.

Caulfield Grammarians have claimed a spot in the top four, after a comprehensive victory over Old Yarra Cobras.

Kylie Lynch was first to get on the board, soccering through a goal to get Caulfield Grammarians the early lead, however, Amber Sciacca responded for the Cobras by converting truly from a free kick. Tensions were rising at Glen Huntly Park when a goal after the siren to Cecilia Baldassarre earnt the Cobras a 2-point lead going into the first break.

Unfortunately for the Cobras, that would turn out to be their last score of the day, as a relentless Grammarians side went on to flex their muscles for the remainder of the game, kicking 21, 17 and 13 points in the following quarters to record a 49-point win at the final siren.

Coach Danielle Distefano would be incredibly proud of her side’s whole team performance, with 8 individual goal scorers getting the job done in Dani’s 50th game as a coach. Isobel Hartog was rewarded best on for her exceptional job on the wing, with intercept queen Georgia Foran following closely behind.

In a game where the Cobras found it hard to get the ball in their forward 50, Amber Sciacca, Clare Moody and Hannah Fosbrooke fought tirelessly to deter Caulfield’s attack.

At Victoria Park, Kew carved out a percentage-boosting win against Coburg, defeating the Lions by 38 points.

Kew set themselves up for the day with a dominant first quarter, bringing intensity from the first bounce which saw a goal to Eloise Burdett-Moore within the first minute of play. In a brilliant display of forward craft, Amelia Dawborn kicked the next three goals to extend the Bears’ lead out to 27 points by the first break.

Coburg returned from the break with a newfound focus, tightening up defensively whilst producing scoring opportunities of their own. Nonetheless, accuracy was an

issue for the Lions who notched just 5 behinds for the day, whereas Kew’s superior efficiency allowed them to add another 16 points to their final score.

Dawborn played a pivotal part in Kew’s victory, while Jade Hillas played her best game of the season to date.

For Coburg, Chloe Perrett and Ella Tyson were significant contributors, not allowing the game to blow out in the second half.

The rain may have been pouring down at Righetti Oval, but nothing was able to dampen the spirits of ladder leaders, St Kevin’s, as they went on to beat Monash Blues by 39 points.

It took St Kevin’s less than a minute to get on the board, with Hannah Smith snapping the first goal of the game to get the Saints off to the perfect start.

St Kevin’s were able to extend their lead at every break, with the final score reading 6.9 (45) to 1.0 (6). Monash’s one goal was kicked by 2023 Premier B Best & Fairest winner, Ainslee Elliott, who was left unattended at a forward-50 stoppage for the Blues.

In her 100th game for Monash, Sarah Jade Rose was deemed best on for the Blues, while Saints Captain Bree Doyle led her team in exemplary fashion, kicking her fourth career goal to put the icing on the cake.

Melbourne University had no answer for Old Scotch when the two sides met at Camberwell Sportsground.

Melbourne University found themselves unable to curtail the influence of key performers such as Nadia von Bertouch, Zoe Carter and Mia Caffry, as Old Scotch went on to extend their lead at every break, whilst also holding the Mugars scoreless.

Millie Fraser-Smith, Eloise Defina and Anna Vrsecky contributed two majors each to their team’s 55-point triumph, with Defina’s contribution taking her back to the top of the league goal-kicking tally on a season total of 21.

A positive for Melbourne University was the performance of VFLW premiership player Georgia Alomes, who has recently returned from a foot injury and whose efforts in the ruck did not go unnoticed.

Lauren

All eyes were on Ian Johnson Oval for the final match of the round between Collegians and West Brunswick, with the result holding the potential to shake up the ladder standings.

Emily Sainty took the ball out of the ruck to kick the first goal of the day and earn Collegians the early lead, however, West Brunswick were quick to respond through Sophie Stewart, taking a one-point lead into the first break.

West Brunswick took control in the second term but struggled to find a major, peppering away with behinds, until Stewart slotted through a textbook set shot right before the half time siren sounded.

The second half was hotly contested, as both sides displayed brilliant passages of play but struggled to make a dent on the scoreboard. With goals few and far between, it was enough to seal the game when Kristy de Pellegrini soccered a goal through in the final quarter to earn West Brunswick a 13-point win.

The result opens the door on the top four, with Caulfield, Collegians and West Brunswick all vying for the fourth spot –Collegians have dropped to fifth place, with West Brunswick only trailing on percentage.

While every West Brunswick player stepped up in the crucial match up, there were a few players who require special mention.

Sophie Stewart’s hunger for the football and desperation to get her side over the line was palpable, causing headaches for Collegians’ defenders all day as she played a part in almost all West Brunswick’s scoring opportunities.

Star midfielder Taylah Watson was also at her best, while Darebin VFLW co-captain Caitlin Bunker was a welcome addition to the line-up, bringing an extra level of experience and skill.

Clutch Provest creates chaos in Premier B

Zac Provest’s clutch run-down tackle and set shot goal mere moments before the final siren gave rise to Premier B’s first draw of the season between ninth-placed Williamstown CYMS and first-placed Old Haileybury

With the Bloods leading by a goal as time ticked down, having turned around an 11-point three quarter time deficit into a lead, half forward Hugo Nosiara found the football and tore away from a muddy pack of players at centre half back.

However, Provest, who has enjoyed a stellar first season of regular senior football, dragged down the fleeing Nosiara, winning himself a free kick and an opportunity to tie the game.

Cooly, Provest saluted, booting his third goal of the day and second of the final term, the siren sounding out at Fearon Reserve as the CYs celebrated Provest’s goal.

The 9.8 (62) apiece draw keeps the Bloods (42 points) narrowly ahead of the chasing pair of De La Salle and Old Geelong (36 points apiece)while the two point gap effectively rules out percentage as the deciding factor should things get tight down the stretch.

“It was probably a just result, to tell you the truth,” said Old Haileybury coach Daniel Ward.

“I was proud of our group for not giving it up.”

Brede Seccull and Brodie Steele continued their excellent seasons, while Nosiara and Harrison Jones booted two goals each in the first non-winning result for the Bloods since Round 2.

The result is a far cry from the 126-point margin the Bloods thumped Williamstown by in Round 3, and a testament to the growth and development of the CYs, said Ward.

“I was really impressed with how strong they were around the contest.”

“They showed that on the weekend that they’re playing for (coach Con Terzoglou).”

The CYs have a fight on their hands to remain in Premier B, a reality head coach Con Terzoglou is well aware of with a crucial clash with Caulfield Grammarians to come this weekend at Fearon Reserve

“We know this is a must-win. It’s on our home deck (and) we’re feeling good about our form,” he said.

Caulfield hasn’t won a game since Round 5, sitting a game-and-ahalf out of the drop zone on 16 points, with the CYs eyeing off Guy McKenna’s team from their position on ten points.

“The last two weeks have been pleasing - the boys have responded after the break. They’re keen to finish strong.”

“(But) if we don’t play our brand, our style, then we won’t win, irrespective of the opposition.”

The Grammarians ran into a white-hot Old Geelong squad last weekend, the OGs setting up their fifth consecutive win with an eightgoal-to-one opening half at Como Park, running out 12.15 (87) to 5.8 (38) victors

Nathan Brown has his squad humming at the moment, able to combine the likes of Tim Jones, Jack Sheridan, Harry Kol and Matt Wallis with impressive depth.

“We’ve got beautiful numbers in our reserves and thirds that are always there for the club,” Brown said.

The OGs’ Round 14 clash with fourth-placed Old Trinity (32 points) will significantly impact the top four, Old Ivanhoe and Old Camberwell each just one game behind and prepared to seize any opportunity to leap into the finals-playing positions

“We’ve got to train well, we’ve got to prepare well, because we’re up against a high-quality team and a high-quality coaching group,” said Brown.

Guy McKenna was left to rue the Grammarians’ poor start, leaving a green Caulfield side far too much to be done in the second half

“Our minds weren’t on the job early on…they took us to the cleaners,” McKenna said, the Grammarians 45 points down at the long break.

“It wasn’t through a lack of effort - in some cases, they were actually over-trying.”

Caulfield responded well after half time, matching the OGs’ four second-half goals with four of their own and somewhat repairing their faulty structures.

McKenna lauded the performance of forward-turned-defender Ingo Dammersmith, Caulfield’s finest under intense pressure, while Sam McInerney was outstanding.

“(McInerney) keeps on delivering. His season’s been exceptional. Under siege in the midfield, but he just battled his backside off,” McKenna said.

De La Salle is in fine touch, like the OGs on a winning run, and tuned up for a blockbuster meeting with the Bloods next round, after holding Old Trinity at arm’s length after half time for a 14.14 (98) to 8.8 (57) win.

In Round 3, Nick Hyland’s side had to chase down the Ts, the comeback ultimately falling short by three points with Trent Shannon’s after-the-siren shot from a tough angle just missing.

There was no need for heroics this time, De La punting ten goals to five after the long break to put paid to the contest - the first two goals of the final quarter through the agency of Sean Fisher and Hugh Nicholson giving the Ts too much to do.

(They) adapted to the conditions so much better than we did over the course of the game,” said Old Trinity coach Donald McDonald.

“We have improved so much from last year, but to get into the top four we are going to have to find a way to compete for longer.”

De La’s ability to run out games has been a highlight of the season so far - and coach Hyland thinks his is the “fittest team in the comp”.

“I’ll back in our fitness over anyone else’s,” Hyland said.

Fisher (four goals) and Christian Algeri (three) were excellent, while Hugh Beasley booted three majors for the Ts.

Premier C graduates Old Ivanhoe and Old Camberwell currently sit outside of the top four, but both saluted last weekend to continue to apply pressure on the finals-playing positions.

Hoers coach Jarrod Gieschen made seven changes to the lineup that couldn’t go with the Ts in Round 12 and found monster performances from Luke Scuderi (7 goals), Toby McLean, Harrison Reid and Rohan McKenzie against St Bedes/Mentone

In captain Harry Frazer’s 100th game, the Hoers rose to the occasion with an eleven-goal first half, including a four-goals-to-none second quarter, as part of an 18.8 (116) to 7.11 (53) win.

Coach Gieschen had called for a lift in his side’s defensive work at the first break - the Hoers booting seven goals yet conceding four.

“To be honest, I wasn’t happy with how we were defending. We’re usually a pretty hard team to score against.”

The Old Ivanhoe coach made a point about “getting our DNA back” to his players and was pleased with the response.

Level on points with Old Trinity yet some 12% behind, Gieschen acknowledges the Hoers have to be almost perfect to feature in finals.

“We’ve got to do everything right now for the next five weeks.”

Jack Behnk, Jack Cain and Jake Harding were some of the Tigers’ best on a difficult day, following some stirring performances from Brad Berry’s unit.

Old Camberwell took care of business against a depleted Beaumaris side, creating a three-game gap between sixth and seventh on the ladder and keeping pace with the glut of teams from second to sixth that are separated by just four points.

James Allen was brilliant for the Wellers, earning praise from Sharks coach Josh Bourke.

“That seasoned, strong body, his work rate to get back and come through and link up (in transition)…he’s a very good player,” Bourke said.

Harry Laukens booted four goals to go 13 goals clear of Nathan Scollo in the race for the leading goalscorer gong, the Wellers breaking clear in the last quarter and winning 8.8 (56) to 2.12 (24).

The Sharks were inside 50 enough, said Bourke - it was execution in front of goal that let his young side down.

Next up for Beaumaris is Old Ivanhoe at Chelsworth Park, while the Wellers will host SBMT at Gordon Barnard Reserve and the CYs.

Two top-four clashes highlight Round 14 as perhaps the most crucial of the season so far: Old Haileybury off to Princes Park for a clash with De La Salle and Old Geelong to host Old Trinity, with Old Ivanhoe and Old Camberwell ready to pounce on the incoming chaos.

PREMIER B WOMEN’S

SBMT and Westbourne dominate, while Aquinas cause major upset

Round 14 of the VAFA Women’s Prem B competition delivered a mix of expected outcomes and surprising upsets, making the race for finals even more intriguing. The home-ground advantage was clear in wet-weather conditions, with all home teams coming away with a win. The weekend saw a dominant performance from St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, a shocking defeat for Old Geelong at the hands of Aquinas OC, a hard-fought win for Williamstown CYMS, and a relentless display from Westbourne Grammarians.

St Bedes/Mentone Tigers proved far too strong with an impressive 12.9 (81) to 3.5 (23) victory over Beaumaris. The Tigers were sharp from the opening bounce, displaying a cohesive team unit that set the tone for the match. They were able to run away with it in the third quarter, where they kicked five goals and kept Beaumaris scoreless.

The midfield’s ability to win clearances and deliver the ball with precision to the forward line was instrumental. Isabella Gietzmann was a standout in the forward 50, finishing with three goals and proving too much for the Beaumaris defenders to handle. Maddi Wilson, Nina Coghill, and Georgia Ricardo were also star players for the Tigers throughout the match.

Beaumaris struggled to contain the Tigers’ offensive pressure. Despite some hard-fought efforts, the visitors couldn’t match the pace and intensity of the Tigers. Their forward entries were limited and often rebounded quickly by the Tigers’ disciplined defence.

Bottom of the table Aquinas OC pulled off a stunning upset, defeating second placed Old Geelong in a low scoring affair, capitalising on opportunities, 2.2 (14) to 0.9 (9). This result not only surprised many but also highlighted the unpredictable nature of the competition. Aquinas came into the match as clear underdogs but played with a level of intensity and discipline that caught Old Geelong off guard. Meg Dargan was the goalkicking hero of the match, kicking two to seal the deal against the OGs. The midfield and backline worked tirelessly to win contested ball and provide forward opportunities.

Old Geelong, known for their structured play, seemed out of sorts and struggled to find their usual rhythm. Their inability to convert scoring opportunities was a key factor in their loss this round. This uncharacteristic performance resulted in a rare low-scoring game for them.

The victory for Aquinas is a significant morale booster and a reminder that no team can be underestimated. For Old Geelong, this defeat may ignite a much-needed fire in the belly as they head into the critical final rounds of the season.

Williamstown CYMS continued their unbeaten run with a hard-fought 4.4 (28) – 2.6 (18) win over Fitzroy. In a match that lived up to its billing, both teams displayed high-quality football, but it was Williamstown’s composure and defensive solidity that proved decisive. Sarah Thomas, Holly Naden, and Megan Hazel Smart were standouts for the CYs, working efficiently to transition the ball and create scoring opportunities up forward.

Fitzroy put up a valiant fight, particularly in the second half, where they made a noteworthy comeback to almost even the scoreline in the third quarter. Olivia Brilliant, Jaime Nelson, and Simone Mooney were particularly threatening throughout the match and created opportunities for their team to capitalise on. Fitzroy’s pressure and ball use kept them within striking distance but a few behinds instead of goals cost them dearly.

This win solidifies Williamstown CYMS’ dominance this season and maintains their perfect record, while Fitzroy can take heart from their competitive performance against the top side.

Westbourne Grammarians delivered a statement with a crushing 14.12 (96) to 0.0 (0) victory over Old Xaverians. From start to finish, the home side was in complete control, showcasing their attacking flair and defensive prowess.

The midfield worked tirelessly, winning the contested ball and setting up numerous forward entries. The forward line was clinical, with a number of players converting opportunities. Stephanie Williams’ ability to find space and finish accurately was a highlight of the match, which saw her kick three.

Old Xaverians were unable to cope with the relentless pressure and precision of Westbourne. Their defence was under attack from the first whistle, and their midfield struggled to break free from the tight checking of the Grammarians.

It was a tough day for the visitors, who will need to regroup and refocus for the remainder of the season. This emphatic win boosts Westbourne Grammarians’ finals aspirations and sends a strong message to the rest of the competition about their capabilities.

As Round 14 concludes, the landscape of the VAFA Premier B Women’s competition continues to evolve. Williamstown CYMS remain the team to beat with an undefeated record, demonstrating consistent excellence across all areas of the ground. St Bedes/Mentone Tigers’ dominant win reinforces them as a threat, while the upset loss for Old Geelong adds intrigue to the finals race.

Aquinas OC’s remarkable victory provides a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the competition, while Fitzroy’s close contest with Williamstown showcases their potential to challenge the top sides.

With only a few rounds left before the finals, every match carries significant weight, and it will be a percentage game. Teams will need to bring their best for the final two rounds to secure their positions and build momentum heading into the business end of the season.

PREMIER C MEN’S

Top four continue to surge in Premier C

The ladder is beginning to shape up as we reach the final stages of the home-and-away season in Premier C. Round 13 generally brought with it predictable results which included the Parkdale Vultures finding themselves back on the winners list.

After a dominant second half, Glen Eira/Old McKinnon defeated PEGS by 34 points.

The first half of the game was skilfully controlled by PEGS who managed to get the footy through the big sticks where the Gryphons were otherwise inaccurate in front of goal, to pocket a 9-point lead at half-time.

The home side quickly changed their fortunes in the third quarter with five goals to PEGS’ one, including three from Will Green.

Their 18-point lead going into the final term was too much for PEGS to chase as the Gryphons comfortably won to finish the round in 6th position, a satisfying place to be after being promoted from Division 1.

Jesse Maxfield, Lachlan Miriams and Joel Chilcott were amongst the best on ground for the Gryphons.

The Hampton Rovers recorded a big 52-point victory over the Monash Blues. This game was led by the home side from start to finish in what was their eleventh win of the season.

The Rovers had an incredible first half which saw them kicking 8.2 (50) and leaving the Blues in a tough spot at 1.4 (10), with this recent run of form seeing them peak at the right time.

Monash had a bit more luck on the scoreboard in the third quarter, converting some good passages of play into goals.

But nonetheless it was Hampton who continued to control the game and claim the four points to finish the round sitting 3rd on the ladder. They sit just one game and percentage behind ladder leaders AJAX.

Hampton’s Corey Jones had an impressive performance with three goals up forward, whilst Max Coughlin and Dillon Melnjak also had good games.

Despite a strong first half from Oakleigh, it was the Parkdale Vultures who triumphed over the Krushers by 47 points.

Oakleigh have had a difficult run in Premier C but have shown their potential on several occasions with their young talent impressing when challenged.

This continued against the Vultures as Oakleigh had an impressive first half, kicking 4.1.25 to 2.2.14 in the first quarter and continuing this momentum in the second term to take a 5-point lead into half-time.

However, the match turned in the second half as the Vultures reminded everyone of the damage they can cause during the finals.

Mitch Brown’s presence positively impacted the Vultures with Brown booting nine majors throughout the day. This win provides Parkdale with some breathing room in the top four as two games separate the Vultures and 5th placed Mazenod.

Old Carey defeated Mazenod by 38 points to end the round sitting 2nd on the ladder with a healthy percentage.

Old Carey set the tone early with a brilliant first quarter holding a strong 21-point lead amassed by quarter time.

Mazenod had a better look-in during the second quarter with two goals to Old Carey’s one, whilst both sides were well matched in the third term with two goals apiece meaning it was anyone’s game in the final quarter.

Ultimately, Old Carey prevailed as they moved the ball well to find a further four goals whilst Mazenod struggled to find opportunities to score.

Trent Warren continued his successful season with five goals to his name, taking him to 31 goals for season 2024 and sitting 7th place in the total goal-scorers for Premier C.

AJAX recorded an emphatic 64-point victory over Marcellin, reinforcing their credentials as a team who will go far this season.

AJAX dominated from start to finish on a day to forget for Marcellin who were unable to kick any goals, limited to just 12 behinds.

To Marcellin’s credit, they kept AJAX goal-less in the third quarter, however the damage had been done with AJAX seven goals ahead at that stage.

The margin could’ve been higher if not for AJAX’s inaccuracy in front of goal, but nonetheless, the Jackas’ win serves as a caution to the rest of Premier C to watch out for this team if they are playing them in the final five rounds.

Jordan Cohen, Kane Nissenbaum and Toby Sheezel were instrumental for the home side with two goals each.

The action continues in Round 14, starting with Glen Eira/ Old McKinnon hosting Mazenod at Packer Park in an enticing battle between 6th and 5th, respectively.

The Gryphons will be looking to continue to exceed their expectations since being promoted to Premier C with another win, whilst a win for Mazenod will bring them closer to the top four.

Oakleigh travel across town to play PEGS. Whilst finals are almost certainly out of the question now for PEGS, another win will provide them with some breathing room from 8th, 9th and 10th

An exciting top-four match-up looms between the thirdplaced Hampton Rovers and ladder leading AJAX at Trevor Barker Oval. AJAX claimed the four points when these teams last met in Round 6 so the Rovers will most definitely be looking to settle the score.

Elsewhere, the Parkdale Vultures host the Monash Blues as the Vultures look to edge closer to the top two, and Old Carey take on Marcellin as Marcellin look for their third win.

New Development Field Umpire Coaches

The VAFA is thrilled to announce the appointment of Campbell Hymans as Head Development Field Umpire Coach and Ben Lefebvre as Development Field Umpire Coach.

Campbell and Ben are current VFL (State League) listed field umpires who graduated from the VAFA at the conclusion of the

2022 season. Both coaches are outstanding umpires who are now ready to give back to the next generation of young umpires coming through the development pathway. Nobody is better placed to lead this group than Campbell and Ben, as they have been through the VAFA pathway themselves from Under 19s to Premier Men’s.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

Megan Smart (Williamstown CYMS)

Women’s Rising Star Nominee

The VAFA congratulates Megan Smart from Williamstown CYMS, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 13. Megan has shone in her first year of senior footy at the CY’s solidifying her spot in the forward line. She has kicked multiple goals on three occasions and is a reliable marking target.

What the club said:

Megan Smart, “Smarty”, is playing her first season of Senior footy after coming through the Williamstown Juniors program. She is also on Williamstown’s VFLW list and made her debut at VFL level this season.

Smarty is a hard running half forward. She’s got great touch below her knees, has great goal sense and is a very strong mark, she really plays tall. For a player in their first season of senior footy, Smarty is extremely tough and strong in the contest. You’ll rarely see her beaten one on one.

Williamstown CYMS Women’s Coach, Lawrence Henry said, “We’re incredibly proud of Smarty’s development. She’s such a hard worker and brings so much positivity and a big smile to training and game day. We’re only scratching the surface of what Smarty is capable of so we’re thrilled to see her hard work pay off with this recognition. Smarty is already an exciting and powerful player with the way she can break from inside to outside a contest, with how hard she works we can’t wait to see how good she will be in years to come.”

Men’s Rising Star Nominee

Noah Sutherland (Caulfield Grammarians)

The VAFA congratulates Noah Sutherland from Caulfield Grammarians who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 13. After a strong season in the Under 19’s last year, Noah fought for his spot in the Senior squad and has not disappointed. He has proven himself as a dynamic defender with standout performances week after week.

What the club said:

Noah’s first season at the Grammarians was in 2023 as a shy and skinny kid fresh out of Caulfield Grammar. After a strong pre-season and good form in our practice matches, Noah was on the cusp of playing senior Football before a break in his arm sidelined him for a number of weeks.

Suddsy returned mid-way through the season and played an integral part in our Under 19’s making their way to a Preliminary Final. Noah worked extremely hard on his craft over the off-season and has been a consistent member and a shining light of our senior team in 2024.

Caulfield Grammarians Senior Coach, Guy McKenna said of Noah: “Started his duties down back like most young defenders…see ball punch ball but quickly turned himself into the attacking modern defender you see now. Quiet nature off the ground, thirst for knowledge but an inner drive that makes him continue to grow his game. Blessed with clean hands and quick feet, Noah’s ability to release off his opponent and intercept the ball is a great string to his bow. Given his speed to defend he also has the legs to break lines on offence and turn defence into attack. Often playing undersized, Noah’s ability to find a way to beat his opponent is great credit to his ability to listen and his hard work and diligence. Well done, Suddsy”

Parkside fend off Bears in Top 4 battle

With four weeks left in the regular season, teams know it’s all or nothing in Division 1 Men’s.

Parkside applied some valuable lessons learnt in last week’s loss to Therry Penola to defeat the Kew Bears by 19 points. Conditions at Pitcher Park were extremely tough, so both sides had to take their opportunities when presented. The Bears hit the scoreboard in the first 90 seconds with a nice finish in the pocket. Devils midfielder Corey McKay kicked the first for his side not long after.

A 50-metre penalty gave a gift for Cody Lawson to kick two goals in a row for the Devils as Yanek Stecki provided great dash on the wing. Bears forward Tom Harbrow took a brave mark inside 50 to help give the Bears the lead on the quarter-time siren.

In the quarter-time huddle, Bears coach Bryan Cole told his men to stick to the basics in wet weather footy. The message was simple: keep playing one one-on-one footy and stay in front. In the second term, it was a real arm wrestle between two sides understanding the gravity of the game for their season.

Bears forward Ned Waters kicked a stellar goal over his head as the fast rebounds from Devils defenders Dominic Douglas and Riley Williams were hard to defend. Irishmen Richard Hughes played well at half-back for the Bears and was quite inventive with his kicks inside 50.

The game reached a stalemate in the second half, with goal-scoring opportunities at a premium. The Bears gave away another 50-metre penalty for Ciaran Cotter to make them pay.

The last term saw the Devils turn the heat up another level, kicking two goals and keeping the Bears scoreless. Devils defender Max Balassone stood up down back alongside Nathan McIntosh to keep their side a game ahead in fourth spot.

UHS-VU responded from last week with a hard-fought 15-point win over the Old Yarra Cobras. The first term was a stalemate with the Old Yarra Cobras kicking the only major to grab the quarter-time lead. The game suddenly opened up in the second term with 10 goals between the two sides.

The Old Yarra Cobras defence were gelling well with Matthew Young using the ball and William Fleming clamping Vultures forward Brandon Jackson to just one goal.

The second half saw the Vultures midfielders get their hands dirty as Ben Dimattina and Harrison Kennedy showed their class.

The Vultures looked like going away with it in the last but the Old Yarra Cobras kicked two in a row to give themselves within two goals with five minutes remaining. Old Yarra Cobras forward Anthony Raso played well adding three goals to his name but the Vultures ran away with the points.

Prahran flexed their muscles against the Preston Bullants in a 46-point win. There was a bit of chirp the last time they played each other so it was always going to be an interesting battle this time around.

The pressure from Prahran’s forward line was excellent as Max Milward and Matt Clifford kicked the first two goals of the game. Preston Bullants Alex Johnston kicked a muchneeded steadier before quarter-time.

The second term saw Prahran’s midfield get on top with Joey Bell finding some form and Mackenzie Mayne contributing on the scoreboard kicking two goals. Preston Bullants struggled to connect inside 50 kicking the four goals for the game as Prahran came out victors.

Old Peninsula played a great game in front of their home fans smashing Therry Penola to post the biggest win of the season (109 points) and a handy percentage booster.

The Pirates played exceptionally all around the park and were too good after quarter-time. Therry Penola were well beaten in the contest by Kurt Thiele and whenever they had the chance to enter inside 50 defenders Killian Doyle and Lachlan Gibbs were well positioned.

Half-forward James Bravo continued to nail the fundamentals and attitudes of Peter Williamson’s side throughout the day. Pressure and celebrating the little wins were top of mind as the Pirates defence kept Therry Penola goalless for the entire game.

Ormond had a huge second-half to defeat West Brunswick by 34 points.

The Magpies came to play early with their midfield applying great heat around the ball. Ben Ablett set the tone, wanting to respond after last week’s loss and they earned a four-point lead at half time.

However, the Monders didn’t want to let this one slip and their midfield lifted. Jackson Hille, James Van Oosten, Ethan Hanley and Jack Mason won the clearance battle as they started to control territory.

When the Monders are switched on, their pressure game is tough to play against and forwards Ben Williams and James Tsakonas worked hard all day and got some scoreboard reward in the second half.

Round 15 sees UHS-VU come up against the Monders in a top-four clash. Last time they played, Brandon Jackson kicked six goals including three in the last quarter, so the Monders’ defence will have a big challenge on their hands.

Therry Penola will want to respond after their poor display against Old Peninsula. They take on the Old Yarra Cobras at John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve.

The top of the table Prahran play the Bears at Victoria Park. Coming into the last stretch of the season the Bears are looking for another big scalp for their top-four fight.

Parkside are against the Preston Bullants, who are hard to peg at the moment. Devils defender Luciano Logozzo played in the forward line against the Bears in what looks like a role change and it will be interesting to see if it continues.

Old Peninsula play West Brunswick in what is a must-win game for the Pirates, one game behind the Devils.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S

Old Brighton secures minor premiership with thumping win as finals race heats up

With just two weeks of the Div 1 women’s season to go, the ladder received a shake up after another big round of results on the weekend.

Perhaps the biggest upset was Old Melburnians defeating Collegians by 74 points at Ian Johnson Oval.

Old Melburnians kicked fairly accurately, however, the deficit could’ve been larger, kicking 14.8 for the match. Clare Fraser kicked a massive five goals, hauling her team to victory, whilst Ciara McAdam was best on ground with a goal of her own.

The goals were shared around, with eight different goal scorers for the match. Despite the large loss, credit must be given to Collegians who were extremely undermanned, with just 16 players taking the field.

What once was looking like a season which was promising a home final, Collegians now sit in fourth and whilst they sit only a game behind Parkdale, they have a large percentage gap separating themselves. They’ll be hoping to bounce back against bottom of the ladder Old Haileybury on Saturday afternoon.

As for Old Melburnians, they’ll be hoping to knock off another higher placed opponent on Saturday morning in Parkdale to finish the season off strong.

Old Brighton and Marcellin both recorded strong wins again as they tussle for bragging rights of being premiership favourites as we head into the finals. Old Brighton’s win means they secure the minor premiership, as they are three wins ahead of second place with just two rounds to go.

Old Brighton defeated Old Haileybury at Brighton Beach Oval by 76 points. It looked like Old Brighton were going to have a massive outing once again, going into the main break with 9.3. Inaccuracy crept up on them in the second half, kicking 4.8, an area they will no doubt be focusing on heading into the finals.

Co-captains India Tait and Caterina O’Brien were yet again best on ground, in a season where both girls have led from the front to get the team into first on the ladder and two games ahead of reigning premiers Marcellin.

Old Haileybury managed just two goals for the game via Serene Vudiniabola and Alizza Hetherington. It leaves them sitting bottom of the ladder with just the three wins for the season so far.

Next round, we will be treated to a potential grand final preview with Marcellin hosting Old Brighton on Saturday morning. The match up looms as a massive one for both teams to further build on their impressive seasons.

Meanwhile Old Haileybury will host Collegians who will be hoping to salvage their season.

In the final game of the round, Parkdale Vultures were looking to continue their run of form in a 2 vs 3 on the ladder match up. However, Marcellin proved too much for them as they continued their strong premiership defence.

The first quarter was evenly matched, with Parkdale down only six points at quarter time and potentially could have led had they converted more accurately. However, Marcellin piled on the goals in the second quarter, taking a 31-point lead into half time.

Parkdale never really recovered, kicking one goal for the entire second half compared to Marcellin’s six. Zoe Glascott continued her outstanding form once again, kicking five goals to take her tally to 50 for the season and a huge 17 goals across the last three games. Glascott is definitely in high contention for the player of the season and a spot in the Team of the Year.

Parkdale are still sitting third on the ladder despite the large defeat and will be hoping to bounce back against a much improved Old Melburnians next weekend. Marcellin will line up against Old Brighton in a massive match up.

DIVISION 2 MEN’S

Aquinas keeps their season alive

In Round 14 of Division 2 Men’s, teams are in a fierce scramble to secure the best ladder positions. As we near the end of the competition, the significance of each game intensifies with plenty of must-see showdowns on the horizon that will determine who plays in September.

The action began at Lindsay Hasset Oval, where St Mary’s Salesian defeated the hosts South Melbourne by 6 points. The final score was 5.3 (33) to 5.9 (39). In a tightly contested match, the first quarter kicked off with a slow start as St Mary’s managed to edge ahead with a narrow lead of 6 points.

The second quarter saw South Melbourne scoring the only goal of the term, while St Mary’s maintained a 2-point lead going into halftime. The real excitement unfolded in the fourth quarter as South Melbourne’s dynamic duo, Jesse Andrew and Luke Johnson, propelled their team to a game high 13-point lead.

However, St Mary’s players displayed exceptional skill, outmanoeuvring the Swans defence and seizing victory in what’s become a crucial stage of the competition. South Melbourne’s Jamie Brooker kicked a couple of goals, whereas Saint Zac Gucciardo also kicked two goals for his team.

St Mary’s coach Clay Tait said after the game, “We felt like we’d played a solid game all day and hadn’t been able to capitalise early.”

They were defending hard and dropping numbers back. We decided to go one-on-one everywhere on the ground and send players forward if their opponent dropped into our forward 50.”

“It was a wet, scrappy day, and we fought hard in the contest to get more quality shots in the 4th quarter” he said.

Meanwhile, Whitefriars continued their winning streak in the competition. This time, they outplayed MHSOB at Whitefriars College Oval by 19 points.

The Friars got off to a strong start in the first quarter with a 9-point lead, but MHSOB fought back in the second quarter and gained momentum just before half-time. The Unicorns were up by 4 points at the break.

As the teams entered the third quarter, the Friars took back control and outwitted the Unicorns’ defence, securing a 26-point lead before the final quarter. Both teams put up a strong defence in the final quarter, but the Whitefriars emerged as the winners with a final score of 7.10 (52) to 5.3 (33).

Nicholas Garratt (3 goals) and Thomas Jacotine (2 goals) were the top performers for the Whitefriars, whereas Matt Robertson once again shone with two majors for MHSOB.

Hawthorn have kept their finals hopes alive as they dismantled Elsternwick by 64 points at Elsternwick Park. The final score was Elsternwick with 6.9 (45) defeated by Hawthorn with a mammoth 16.13 (109).

The first quarter began with both teams scoring, but Hawthorn, coming off a loss to South Melbourne, was desperate for a win. Hawthorn led by 12 points in the first quarter and extended its lead to 25 points before the main break.

The Hawks came out even stronger in the third quarter taking a near 50-point advantage into three-quarter-time. Hawthorn’s forwards and defence were in peak form, showing their determination to secure a crucial win as they push for a top-four finish.

Eamonn Avery was the player of the match as he booted 6 goals for the Hawks, as his teammates Ethan HarveyCleary and Cooper Rule kicked 3 goals each.

After this huge win, Hawthorn coach Mark Murray expressed his thoughts by saying, “We played really well. It was a full team effort. We decided to take this game as a challenge and wanted to enjoy ourselves while playing.”

Aquinas have narrowly edged out Wattle Park with a final score of 69-64 at Bennettswood Reserve. Aquinas secured a hard-fought victory as both sides look to avoid relegation.

The game started with Aquinas taking an early lead, ending the first quarter at 22-15. They extended their advantage in the second quarter with a strong performance, leading 43-23 at halftime.

The Animals were still struggling in the third quarter, and Aquinas were playing like they have nothing to lose. They extend their lead to 29 points heading into the last.

In the fourth quarter, an early Aquinas goal extended the margin to 35, but then the Animals rallied with a flurry of unanswered goals. Wattle Park tried their best but still fell short by 5 points. Currently, Wattle Park is in eighth on 18 points, and Aquinas is in ninth just a half-game behind.

Aquinas’ Garrison Asciak, Damien Pelosi and Nick Hannah kicked 2 goals each, whilst Sean Drummond and Joden Crothers also booted in 2 goals for Aquinas.

Brunswick, the table-toppers, are still dominating in Division 2. Once again, they have proved to everyone why they’re the best team in the competition. This time, the Nobs have defeated Bulleen Templestowe by 19 points at the Ted Ajani Reserve.

The Bullants started impressively, as it felt like, once again, someone was ready to challenge Brunswick. But the Nobs got a slight edge by 9 points in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Brunswick’s Paul Scamporlino kicked in 2 crucial goals and received support from his teammates Rowan Hogenbirk and Joshua Hedley, who also contributed by scoring a goal each to take the lead by 31 points.

In the final quarter, Bulleen Templestowe’s Anthony Lucisano booted 2 goals for his team, but his efforts weren’t enough to take his team to the finishing line. Brunswick’s Paul Scamporlino (four goals) scored the most in the game.

The competition moves to the 15th round, and some teams are still vying for the top four spots with third down to sixth separated by just two games.

Next weekend, South Melbourne will face Whitefriars at Lindsay Hasset Oval, and MHSOB will face Elsternwick at the picturesque Melbourne High School.

St Mary’s will be hosting the ladder-leading Brunswick. Aquinas, who just won the contest against the Animals, will be playing against Bullen Templestowe, and finally, Hawthorn will be challenging Wattle Park at the Rathmines Road Reserve.

DIVISION 2 WOMEN’S

Oakleigh keep themselves on the cusp of the top 4 with just two to go

All teams have turned the final corner and are heading down the home straight with just two rounds remaining in the Division 2 Women’s fixture. That all important top four standing is yet to be consolidated with five teams in hot contention. A strong win from Power House propels them into second, while Oakleigh have managed to stay within touching distance.

Oakleigh have shaken the blues from a couple of consecutive losses to get themselves back on the winners list and in the running for finals after a 29-point victory over Richmond Central

Since joining Oakleigh’s Senior Women’s side, young gun Sienna Bernardo has not missed a beat, producing another best on performance in the Krusher’s gutsy win.

The Krushers hand their hands on the Sherrin early and controlled the momentum of play, hitting the scoreboard in the first quarter whilst holding the Snakes at bay.

Oakleigh extended their lead at every change, while Richmond only managed an additional behind in each quarter bringing the final scoreline to 32-3.

This all-important victory keeps Oakleigh in fifth position, just one win outside the top 4. They will need to carry this momentum through their next two match ups and hope other results go their way should they wish to play finals football.

After a forgettable Round 13 loss, Old Trinity have bounced back to secure victory over Old Camberwell/ AJAX away from home. The T’s 10 scoring shots converted to 3.7 (25) on the scoreboard, while the hosts registered just 3 behinds for the morning.

In frosty conditions with heavy turf under foot, Old Trinity did well to create opportunities inside 50 with some new faces relishing the opportunity; and it was Phoebe Hewertson and Stephanie Samartzis who slotted their first goals of the season.

The consistency of Natasha Borash and Lara Young showed once more for the T’s leading the charge for their side, while Louise Zhang was a stand out for Old Camberwell/AJAX earning best afield accolades in just her first match.

The amalgamated side of Old Camberwell/AJAX have, to their credit, taken every challenge in their stride and are hungry to try and secure their first win in Division 2 Women’s for the season in the final two rounds.

In a top 4 clash, the Hampton Rovers hosted Whitefriars on the weekend with the four points going the way of the visitors. The pendulum swung back and forth early with the Rovers taking an early advantage, before Whitefriars got busy in the second term to turn the tables in their favour.

While both sides extended their scores in the premiership quarter, Hampton got going in the final term to win the quarter with one final goal, and a strong defensive effort to keep the Friars scoreless. Alas, it was not quite enough as Whitefriars had done just enough to win by 6 points.

Clare Fernandes from Whitefriars had her best haul in front of the big sticks since Round 2, booting two goals and finishing as the only dual goal scorer from the match.

This loss is Hampton’s third of the season and they will look to bounce back to finish the season strong and in good standing with finals on the horizon. Whilst this win to the Friars will simply bolster their confidence as they close out their home and away season.

Power House are wasting no time to make their mark with a dominant victory that sees them soar into second place on a competitive ladder. Wet weather conditions resulted in a back-and-forth tussle early on against Mazenod, with very little reward for effort on the scoreboard.

After a half time rest and a welcome break in the conditions, Power House got busy to run away with a percentage boosting win. A five-goal second half saw them break away from Mazenod who only managed 2 behinds after half-time.

The in-form side finished with five individual goal kickers for the day, led by Kayla Slattery with two majors. Power House’s Caoilfhionn Culliton has found her season best form of late and steered her side impressively alongside a stellar performance from Joanne Down.

Susan Miller

Despite a couple of recent losses, Mazenod are not to be underestimated as they will no doubt look to bounce back with their uncanny ability to cause major upset, which could stir the top order.

Glen Eira/Old McKinnon are undoubtedly the powerhouse of the competition this season having only dropped one game back in Round 5. This weekend was no different as they went out and obliterated yet another opponent in an 11.16 (82) to 0.2 (2) rampage.

This week’s victim to fall at the hands of the Gryphons was Hawthorn who are currently sitting on four wins for the season. Glen Eira got their skates on early to rack up a score of 35 heading into the main break while a cohesive defensive effort kept the Hawks at bay with their points coming in the third and fourth quarters.

A five-goal bag deemed the third term the Gryphon’s best quarter with Lily Fitzpatrick and Aleesha Whittle at the helm. Whittle finished the day with 3 and Fitzpatrick 2, while they were among seven individual goal scorers for the home side.

When a 68-point buffer didn’t feel like quite enough at the final change, Glen Eira mustered up something special to charge home with an 80-point smashing.

It was a tough day out for a battered Hawthorn in a challenge that was always going to prove as great as the tallest mountain with Glen Eira’s unbeatable record.

All 10 teams will reset and go again for the 15th round with the opener between Richmond Central and Hampton Rovers kicking off bright and early at Kevin Bartlett Reserve. Mazenod will host red-hot Whitefriars, while Old Trinity come up against Power House.

The top of the table plays the bottom as Glen Eira/Old McKinnon host Old Camberwell/AJAX in what could be another trouncing at the hands of the flag favourites. Meanwhile Hawthorn will face off against Oakleigh in a must win match for the Krushers who are currently on the cusp of finals eligibility.

DIVISION 3 MEN’S

St John’s claim top spot as battle for finals heats up

In another wet weekend of Division 3 football, the race for the minor premiership has a new leader, whilst three teams continue to jostle for the fifth and final place in September.

Albert Park’s season has finally clicked into gear, unloading a dominant display over Chadstone, finding form similar to their runners-up season last year in Division 4.

The Falcons held a 43-point halftime advantage, but it was their second half that boosted their percentage. Thanks to a five-goal second-half haul by Lachlan Rennie, Albert Park piled on 12 goals to five.

Felix Metz was deemed best on ground for the Falcons, alongside Rennie who recorded six goals in total. Ben Ogilvie was the lone multiple-goal scorer for the Synners, snagging three majors.

This win keeps the Falcons within touching distance of the top-five, just a game and percentage behind. Their run of form could not be more well-timed, with a brutal fixture of St John’s, North Brunswick and Richmond Central to close out their season. However, with their latest wins, the Falcons will be confident they can knock off a top-four side and keep the finals chances alive.

Swinburne University have dealt the final blow to La Trobe University’s season with a surging last quarter to overcome a three-quarter-time deficit.

The fierce rivalry between the collegiate sides did not disappoint, as the Razorbacks backed up their Round 6 win over La Trobe with a 15-point win on Saturday.

Swinburne led by 15 at quarter-time, and 34 during the second term, however the Trobers responded with six straight goals to stunningly take a three-point halftime lead.

The third-quarter was an arm wrestle, as La Trobe managed the only goal for the term, extending their lead to ten points. The Razorbacks charged with a wet sail though, kicking all four last-quarter goals to land the ultimate strike to La Trobe’s finals dreams.

Nick Ferguson was vital up forward again for Swinburne, kicking three goals, as Tyson Wiegold (two goals) earned best on ground. Jonty Randall, Archie Conboy and Connor McCredden were among the best for La Trobe.

La Trobe are now purely a mathematical chance of playing in September, having lost their last eight straight, whilst Swinburne remain just percentage outside the top-five.

St John’s have claimed top ladder position, as a 92-point win against Eley Park, along with other favourable results, has boosted them above North Brunswick for the first time this season.

St John’s picked up right from where they left off last week, scoring five goals in the opening 11 minutes, before the Sharks reigned in some control. The JOCs still remained a steady 34 points ahead of Eley Park at quarter time, and continued to extend their lead into the second quarter.

Playing with newfound confidence after a win against La Trobe in Round 13, the Sharks challenged the soon-to-be ladder-leaders after the main break, outscoring the JOCs in the third term.

However, the well-oiled machine of St John’s regrouped and kept Eley Park scoreless in the final quarter, winning 17.15 (117) to 4.1 (25).

Joshua Mourant, Tom Siposs and Brendan Ash were best on for St John’s. Aaron Williams and Jesiah Mcgarvie worked tirelessly in defence, as Gus Fowler and Patrick Rossi maintained lively energy up forward. Improving week-on-week, the Sharks will be circling a chance to square the ledger against Chadstone next round.

How quickly the mighty have fallen. Establishing their credibility as a flag fancy, Power House have handed North Brunswick a second consecutive loss, the same Bulls side that suffered just its first loss since 2022 last weekend.

In a hotly contested opening term, neither team could land a blow with the quarter-time scores 0.1 (1) to 0.2 (2), in favour of Power House. The match continued to be a standoff, both defences unwavering, as Power House’s lead creeped out slightly to seven points by halftime.

Power House smelt blood though, and they capitalised, booting four goals to two behinds. The game’s scoring once again stagnated in the final term, as Power House’s third quarter of flair ultimately determined a Division 3 battle for the ages.

Benjamin Circosta was a game-changer with two of Power House’s third quarter goals, as Matt Devine was deemed best-on.

North Brunswick’s loss drops them down to second on the ladder and are now just one game ahead of Power House and Canterbury. A critical opportunity to rebound comes against La Trobe this weekend, with another loss potentially sliding the Bulls down to as low as fourth.

Richmond Central hold their finals position for another week after a solid victory against Box Hill North. The Snakes held just a seven-point quarter-time lead, but a second term of six goals to one behind erased any doubt of victory.

Banjo Plummer and Campbell Mellor were amongst the Snakes best in the 65-point win, as Kyle Hocking and Tim Stanghi contributed well for the Demons.

Richmond Central’s focus will turn to their matchup against Swinburne this weekend, a blockbuster “eight-point” game that could determine the final five.

There are plenty more enticing games of footy in Round 15 to come too.

La Trobe host North Brunswick, as Eley Park travel to Chadstone for a wooden-spoon-avoiding clash. Albert Park are tasked to upset St John’s if they are to play finals, as Richmond Central host Swinburne in the game of the round. Canterbury and Power House close out the round in a mouthwatering early finals preview, as Box Hill North have the bye.

HOLMESGLEN U19’S REPORT

Big comebacks and a season-first draw headlines Round 14

Another round of the Holmesglen Under 19 Premier Men’s competition in the books and finals football approaches hastily.

It was Friday night where Round 14 would kick-off, Old Brighton up against Beaumaris. Under the lights of Banksia Reserve, the Brighton boys were determined for victory, after last week’s mishap against De La Salle.

The Sharks, flailing in last position on the ladder, looked upbeat and determined to upset their opposition’s finals charge. However, it was never to be, Old Brighton controlling the contest from the outset to run away as resounding 77-point winners.

Mason Szyoni resumed his red-hot form, whilst Sebastian Watters and Oliver Goodger proved to be valuable. James Hope also had an enjoyable Friday night out, bagging five goals.

Alex Ward and Matthew Moody shone for the Sharks on the weekend, as they continue their search for another win in season 2024. They will again reprise their role under Friday night lights against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers this week.

Moving further into the round, University Blues prevailed over Williamstown CYMS on Saturday morning. In relatively poor conditions, the wet and wild weather didn’t deter the Blue boys, winning by 23-points.

Clinging to a 5-point lead heading into the final break, Johnny Pring and George McCull expertly navigated the contest. Luca Di Lallo and Sam Litras made the footy look dry down forward, both ending the day with two goals.

Williamstown, unable to make finals in 2024, proved they are not done with just yet. Isaac Gawne, Pierce Farrell and Noah Hannaford were strong, albeit in a loss.

Later in the Saturday schedule, the match of the day saw Old Xaverians and De La Salle battle it out fiercely, only to split premiership points. The game, a draw in the end, would see both sides refusing to give the other an inch.

Sheets of rain falling from the sky, and chilling winds blowing across the ground, supporters who braved Melbourne’s late-July weather would be treated to one of the games of the year.

Goals, a rare commodity on the day due to the conditions, would be celebrated. Ed Dalton and captain Harry Bird lead from the front all day for Old Xavs, whilst De La’s stars Mack Higginbotham and Joshua Stewart shone in the miserable conditions.

It seemed unfitting, unjust, to not award a winner on the day. Players braved the conditions to play with fierce and unrivalled passion, only to walk away from the contest with an empty feeling.

De La Salle again showed character, fighting from behind to register the drawn result. De La continues to defy the odds, constantly disproving the naysayers in the latter half of the year. After failing to register a win in the opening nine rounds, De La haven’t dropped a game in over a month.

For their opposition, it was a disappointing result. Willing themselves all day, Old Xaverians failed to put their opposition away. It was a brutal blow for their final’s ambitions, as they now fall behind the 8-ball.

They sit fifth on the Holmesglen ladder and face an uphill battle to feature in September action.

Over at TH King oval, St Kevin’s defeated Old Scotch in a shock result, one that will have intense ramifications on the season.

Requiring a victory against the new ladder-leaders, SKOB were initially poor. Basic skill-errors and wayward goal kicking would eventuate in a 26-point lead for opposition Scotch heading into the main break.

Henry Long, Jake Phillips and Jasper Hassoun were excellent, leading Old Scotch into a commanding position heading into the second half.

Facing a monumental task, SKOB would be faced with its most daunting task of the year and didn’t they deliver!

In what could be only described as the opposite of the first half, the old Boys flipped the game on its head. They ran rampant, snatching back momentum to conclude the quarter four goals to one, and level with Scotch heading into the final quarter.

Such dominance would allow for the side to ride momentum and cruise to a 13-point victory.

Sebastian McNamara, Xavier Duke and Benjamin Palmer powered their side to the win, keeping their season well and truly alive and knocking ladder leaders off their perch.

Such a performance acts as a stark reminder of the closeness of the entire competition, and that no team is safe at any given time.

The final contest of round 14, would see St Bedes/Mentone Tigers overcome an early scare to beat Caulfield Grammarians by eight points at Glen Huntly Park.

Also fighting for a finals spot, SBMT were in dire need of victory. Such an opportunity wouldn’t be easy against a Caulfield side starving for a win.

Trailing by a singular point heading into the final break, the Tigers were challenged immensely in trying conditions.

For Caulfield, Rory Wright and Thomas Williams supplied some exciting passages of play to gift their side the lead heading into the final stages of the contest.

Wet and cold conditions at Glen Huntly Park would pose as a difficult challenge for the Tigers, who needed to win to keep the flame of their season flickering.

What would require a strong performance, would get just that, as they mustered a late charge in quarter four. An all-round solid team performance would gift St Bedes/Mentone an 8-point win.

Cooper Donnellan, Bennett Martin and Finn Chandler were amongst the best for the victors, whilst livewire forward Liam Bowles slotted four goals to get his side home.

Looking onwards to next week’s proceedings, the blockbuster matchups continue. St Bedes/Mentone will look to continue their winning ways against a struggling Beaumaris under lights, whilst a mouth-watering contest between Old Scotch and Uni Blues will take place on the Saturday. Old Xaverians will look to bounce back against Old Brighton, De La Salle will look to continue their unbeaten run against Williamstown CYMS, and St Kevin’s will play against Caulfield Grammarians.

MILESTONES

50

Aidan Chilcott (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon)

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!

Congratulations Aiden on reaching 50 games. ‘Doss’ is a tough as nails old-fashioned ruckman who has consistently performed well in our U19s for the past 3 years. We look forward to him graduating into Senior Football next year and being involved with our club for many years to come.

Jack Bradley (South Melbourne Districts)

50

Braddles joined the club in 2022 as a Grandfather/Son (is that a thing?) and had an immediate impact both on and off the field. Starting as a reluctant Senior, he quickly found his niche at 11:40 and established himself as a strong winger who played a key part of the 2022 Ressies premiership. A guy who really enjoys his offseason and often comes back in not great shape, he quickly reverses that by being the most committed on the track (barely missing a session) and by Round 1 is back to being fighting fit. Now a Ressies Captain, he’s gone from strength to strength with both his football and leadership and has many exciting years ahead of him.

Josh Jones (AJAX)

100

Josh (Griggsy) is a founding member of the Ajax Sunday team which has played on Sundays for religious reasons since 2013. Josh’s leadership is second to none, he captained the team through its toughest period in 2018-2023 and really held the side together when it needed it most. As a player he’s extremely versatile, playing in the ruck and/or forward line each week he puts his body on the line and leads from the front every time he pulls on the jumper. One of the most loved and dedicated players going around, his 100 games is testament to the work he’s put in. Congrats on the milestone Griggsy!

Josh Gasparini (Old Haileybury)

100

Josh Gasparini - a quiet and unassuming character who is fiercely loyal and loves his mates. Josh joined the club straight from the school and broke into the senior team as a dour back pocket. Over the years and through a mountain of work Josh has become one of the premier midfielders in the VAFA. He is fit, tough and finds the footy like no other.

VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!

Patrick Lithgow (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon)

Congratulations Paddy on reaching 150 games. Paddy played in the Senior, Reserves and Thirds teams and has taken on the playing Coach role in our Thirds for season 2024. A hard and uncompromising footballer, Paddy has kept opposition medical staff and emergency rooms busy during his career with fair, bone-crunching physical contact. A well-deserved milestone for a genuine Glen Eira superstar!

Matt De Poilly (St John’s OC)

Congratulations to St Johns Old Collegians champion Matthew De Poilly on his 150th game for the club, starting his JOCS club career in 2011. Starting in the club U18›s he has seen many tough seasons and now as Co-Captain of the reserves is finally seeing club success, with the first finals campaign in 2023 and eyeing another in 2024 for the reserves. A club stalwart showing commitment and passion, recruiting brothers Nicholas and Dylan to play alongside, becoming a key forward for the club and dominating up forward. Matty has given the JOCS 149 outstanding games, which is an amazing milestone at any level at one club, an amazing role model to his 2 children Lenny and Sadie. Leading from the front as a team first player putting the club in a strong position with his dedication. Go well this weekend Matty and congratulations from the entire St Johns family.

Pete Rohr (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon)

Congratulations Pete on the outstanding achievement of playing 250 games over a career that spans two decades. A much-loved club favourite, Pete’s has played all levels of footy and been a member of the club Executive. We’ve made Pete’s 250th a showcase event as the final Thirds game of season 2024 under the bright lights at Packer Park on Friday night. Thank you from all of us for your service to our club so far Pete, all the best in your milestone match.
