Women’s Grand Final weekend extravaganza

It was great to see an estimated crowd of over 400 supporters attend the first of the 2022 VAFA Grand Finals in beautiful conditions last Sunday. Congratulations to St Kevin’s who triumphed over West Brunswick to take out the premiership in the inaugural Women’s Thirds division. This weekend we have a blockbuster SEVEN women’s grand finals taking place from Premier B though to Division 3. In Premier B Women’s, Old Scotch have made the grand final from 4th position after a stirring last quarter full of goal highlights last week against Old Brighton. Old Scotch are the only women’s team capable of claiming ‘back-toback’ premierships, having defeated Old Brighton for the 2019 Division 1 title. Fitzroy finished the season on top of the ladder and have beaten Old Scotch twice this season, by 6 points and 4 points, so this promises to be an enthralling contest.

And speaking of live streaming, we were thrilled to announce during the week, a partnership with News Corp Australia, who will showcase live through their Kommunity TV platform, the 2022 finals series for our William Buck Premier Men’s, William Buck Premier Women’s, Holmesglen Premier U19’s, and the Mecwacare Masters Grand Final. This will broaden the reach of the VAFA and new subscribers to KommunityTV can access a special introductory offer to access the matches. A shoutout to Director Anthony Amad and our media team for bringing this to fruition. It is a wonderful opportunity that will help VAFA supporters who can’t attend the games, remain engaged, as well as exposing our competition to a wider audience.

Best wishes to everyone participating in this week’s Grand Finals, and as always, continue to Enjoy the Footy!

Coming into the Premier C Grand Final, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers finished the home and away year with just 96 points kicked against them, an average of 6.8 points per game, they are on a 15-game winning streak, and looking to complete the perfect season. Their opponents, Parkdale Vultures, know all about winning streaks, having risen up the ranks from Division 4 where they were 9-0 at the end of the 2021 abandoned season. Like SBMT in Premier C, over in Division 1, Beaumaris are looking to complete the perfect season of 16-0. On the other hand, Old Camberwell have made the grand final from third spot, overcoming 2019 Division 2 Premiers Therry Penola in the first semi by 2 points, and then upsetting Old Haileybury in the Preliminary Final. Last time they met, Beaumaris held Old Camberwell goalless, so this will be the Wellers biggest challenge yet. Hampton Rovers in Division 2 have the longest current winning streak in the VAFA, having won 24 games straight since their last loss in the 2019 Division 3 Women›s Grand Final. Albert Park have performed incredibly well after being elevated in Round 3 from Division 3 to Division 2. Hampton won the semi-final over Albert Park by 7 points, but the Falcons will take confidence from their 3 point Preliminary Final win over Oakleigh. MCC haven›t lost a game this year in Division 3, and will be aiming to complete a perfect 2022 season. Bulleen won only 3 games in 2021, so it is an extraordinary effort for them to have finished second and now playing off in the Grand Final. Given that only one point separated these two teams earlier in the home and away season, another exciting contest Weawaits.are encouraging everyone to pre-purchase their tickets to gain access to venues through the new Finals Hub on the VAFA website (vafa.com.au/finals). Fast, easy access ahead of time. I am pleased to report that the VAFA coverage of women’s football continues to grow. In a first for the Women›s Competition, the VAFA will be live-streaming four finals on Sunday, complete with commentary

What does Guy Martyn have left in his bag of tricks? We’ll find out at 2pm on Saturday. Old Melburnians (3rd) must win at the Snakepit. There’s no two ways about it. Despite St Bernard’s (10th) lowly sitting on the ladder, they can’t afford for a moment to have their minds wander anywhere else but at the current moment.

Will Sandringham release Sam Dunell back to the OM’s? And, with Port Melbourne back in VFL action, Tom Cameron and Jeremy O’Sullivan are likely to go from opposition players to teammates again. The Snowdogs have got a free throw at the stumps this weekend. Paul Groves can experiment with the youth at his disposal. It would make for an interesting final fortnight if they walked off winners.

Closing the gap on the great divide

Starting at Harry Trott Oval. Collegians are looking for eight wins in a row. Seven was a cakewalk for them at Elsternwick Park. It’s the best run of football they’ve put together since 2017 and 2018. Speed on the ball, winning clearances, defending boldly. They have the wood over University Blues with plenty at stake in the RSN Carnival Match of the Day. A win for Collegians, keeps Old Xaverians at bay (if only for the moment). And, a loss for Uni Blues again makes them vulnerable to the relegation zone. Sam Grimley will miss the following two games through suspension. The sharpshooter. Coming off the back of a nine goal haul last Theweek.Lions have plucked the defensive attitude right out of the St Kevin’s playbook. Conceding just 50 points on average in the seven straight victories. Matt Warren, Hugh Johnson and Sam Sofrinidis can lay claim to being that trio in defence. Kenny Ong, Viv Michie and Sam Hibbins running rampant through the midfield. Whilst Ed Greene, Oli Jackson and Dave Mirra are the trio up forward that right now, can’t seem to be stopped.

A couple of weeks ago, they looked locked in for a top two finish. Now, with the run to finish the season, they look to be the most vulnerable of the top four sides to miss out. A thought that hadn’t entered our minds until this week. Jackson Paine will come back into the side after missing the weekend through injury. Josh Freezer, after welcoming in a newborn before the first bounce last week will hopefully have had a few extra hours of sleep this week.

Old Scotch showed plenty against St Kevin’s, and while they’re in the middle of the table, unable to go up or down, they can wreak havoc with the top five. Six final quarter goals against SKOB gives them momentum rolling into Brighton. It’s hard to not be impressed with the showing each week from the youngsters in this team. With any young team, they’ll have ups and downs, but I would assume if you put it to Mark Gnatt right now, not for a moment have his troops thrown in the towel at any point this season. Will Lewis, hit the scoreboard last week. Max Kennedy was named best on ground, along with Quinten Montanaro, and Harry Hill. These are the guys that must stand up, and keep the Tonners ahead in the contest. Big game players, who thrive in big time moments.

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S Joe Pignataro THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 2

St Kevin’s (1st) can just about lock away the minor Premiership if they come away from Glen Huntly Oval with a win over Caulfield Grammarians (7th) . They’ll have one hand on it with Old Brighton and St Bernard’s to come in the final fortnight. During the Saturday warm-up last weekend on RSN Carnival, President of Collegians, Michael Cove flagged “the great divide” in William Buck Premier. It’s not the great divide of angst between each of our competing clubs, even if it seemingly exists. It’s the great divide between the top five teams in the competition, split from the bottom five teams in the competition. And, this weekend that’s how the fixture plays itself out. This weekend, all eyes are on the one particular game in Collegians (4th) and University Blues (8th) . We could come out of Round 16 with a gap wider than the grand canyon, between the best and the rest.

Access team lists on GameDay via the VAFA website or the GameDay App on your mobile device.

Old Brighton (2nd) and Old Scotch (6th) . No love lost here. The Tonners remain at home this weekend, after going win, loss for six weeks, they’ve steadied their ship winning the last two. A win this weekend against the Cardinals puts them in the box seat for a top two finish, but again, they can’t afford to think any further than Saturday.

Old Xaverians (5th) are 26% stronger than the purple army, that number could climb drastically this weekend if they get hold of Old Trinity (9th) . Not only is it stronger than Collegians, it’s above Old Melburnians and Old Brighton. A win this week for the red and black mafia, sets up a grandstand finish in the final fortnight. Old Trinity walked off Melbourne Uni last week feeling aggrieved, and disappointed. They have fallen back into the bottom two and need a slice of magic to get out of the relegation zone in the final three games. While we’ve opened the column talking about the great divide between the top five and the bottom five. It’s a lot closer on the field than the breakaway suggests.

Shaun Kennedy has run himself into form with a big of six, Patty Kerr added five last week. The focus has been on the defence of the ladder leaders, but up front they’re just as potent. It was promising for fans of St Kevins, scary for opposition, to see the return of Sam Critchley through the reserves after battling injury and COVID. Jack Holden made his return after injury as well. The Fields have lost their last four matches coming into the weekend. They’re keeping Uni Blues at bay for the time being with an inferior percentage but an extra win. They’ve got to compete as best as they can on Saturday and hope results fall in their favour to avoid falling down the ladder.

Old Haileybury hit the front early recording a 32-point lead in the first quarter. Christopher Mangoni and Ben Goodchild got going, helping the Tigers claw back the margin to 29 points heading into the break. After halftime, the grit and determination from Lachlan Treverton and Max Sievers saw Old Haileybury well and truly take the reins of this game. A commendable effort down forward from Durras Seccull kicking 7 this week, acting as a catalyst to the Bloods final 60-point victory. With three rounds to go, it is looking likely Old Haileybury have solidified their third position, needing an upset victory to knock them off their perch. Although, up against Fitzroy who sit 4 points behind the Bloods, there is no time for complacency. St Bedes Mentone will travel to Fearon Reserve in round 16 to play Williamston. De La Salle proved too good for Fitzroy, putting on an impressive performance in front of their home crowd. This evenly matched contest saw both teams unable to firmly grasp the momentum of this game. A low-scoring first term putting the Roys in the lead by 1 point. Fitzroy managed to stretch this to 18 points as Julian Turner worked the ball confidently through the middle. Donovan Toohey played a key role for the Roys with his attack on ball coupled with outstanding defensive pressure Nathan Ligris. Determined to shift the tide, De La’s Christian Algeri and Sean rose to the occasion working inch by inch to hit the lead. Hugh Nicholson and Adrian Indovino worked hard in front of goal recording 2 and 4 goals each. De La held onto their lead with a final score of 11.8-74 to Fitzroy’s 8.13-61. Despite the loss, Fitzroy retain their spot in the four for another week. As they look forward to Old Haileybury in round 16, another loss from the Roys could see AJAX snatch a top spot. De La will be hoping to change that fate as they are up against the Jackers next week. Williamstown hosted the Uni Blacks at Fearon Reserve this week. The Uni Blacks started strong, as James Sansom and Samuel Mckenzie got to work, seeing the Blackers up by 20 points at quarter time. Matthew Grocott played his role in front of goal, with his 2 goals and hunger for the footy. For CY, Damon Tucker and Thomas Johnstone were among their best, taking advantage of Williamstown’s possession around the ground. A well-rehearsed 3rd quarter from the Blackers put them ahead by 47-points. Jordan Busuttil’s continual pursuit for the ball and clutch goal stopped the Uni Blacks from running away with the game. The final siren awarded the Uni Blacks the four points, recording the victory by 46-points. Safe to say the Uni Blacks have their eyes firmly set on their finals campaign, with their return to William Buck Premier certainly on the cards given their current trajectory. For Williamstown, it is back to the training track to prepare for their battle against St Bedes Mentone. The last time the two met in round 2, SBMT were victorious by 54 points. Having learnt a lot since then, CY will hope to minimise this margin and maybe even snatch a victory.

Old Haileybury settle their score while De La clutch a victory over the Roys

Old Haileybury got their revenge over St Bedes Mentone, defeating the Tigers by 60 points as De La win their scrummage over the Roys by 13 points. The Uni Blacks and Beaumaris showed why they deserve their top spots, with the Blackers defeating Williamstown by 46-points while the Sharks overcame Old Carey by 100 points. The stage was set at Brindisi oval for a heated match between St Bedes Mentone and Old Haileybury.

Beaumaris were triumphant over Old Carey, defeating the Panthers by 100 points. It was business as usual for the Sharks, taking the lead early and bringing the heat around stoppages. Riley Virtue put on a stellar performance, as did Joel Cusack with his 4 goals. Cusack currently sits 3rd in the goal kicking, with 34 to his name so far, how high can he climb in the last few rounds? The halftime siren saw Beaumaris up by 62 points, with the Shark’s defence locking down the Panther’s forward 50. Old Carey didn’t go down without a fight, Maclean Hogg and Luca Anderson worked tirelessly around the ground. The final term saw the Panthers lift with Jonathan Marsh and Lachlan Senior building on their forward line structure. However, this was no match for the might of Beaumaris, with a concluding margin of 100 points. Next week Beaumaris will enjoy a rest as they head into the bye round meanwhile Old Carey will head to Melbourne University Oval to verse the Uni Blacks.

UHS-VU had been in good form in recent weeks, but they came crashing back to earth at the hands of Old Ivanhoe at Holland Park. Three goals were all they managed for the day, whilst the Ivanhoe boys managed ten in the first half and eleven in the second in a consistent display. Old Ivanhoe had winners all over the park, with Luke Scuderi kicking six goals and Jack Bradley, Darcy Teele and Michael Mitris registering three each. Fraser Campbell and Shane Horton battled hard for UHS-VU, for whom there were three individual goal kickers, but this 20-goal margin was a great percentage boost for Old Ivanhoe, and one the University boys will want to forget very quickly.

For the second match in a row, Monash’s opponents had no answer to their all-ground defence. This week it was the turn of Old Mentonians, and if it were not for some wayward kicking in the second half the margin may have become truly ugly. The Panthers were kept to a single goal to half time, by which the Blues had kicked eight to take a 42-point lead into the rooms with them. The rout continued after half-time, with Old Mentonians able to add one more goal in each of the last two quarters. Monash Blues kicked only three goals in this period themselves, but registered 14 behinds as the Panther defence scrambled to limit the damage. This was not a problem here, Monash’s winning margin being 60 points, but they may need to address this in the run in to finals. Nick Darling added three more to his 2022 goals tally with Macgregor Cameron their best. Mitchell Newman stood out for Old Mentonians, for whom Lucas Haig kicked two of their three goals. Old Ivanhoe 21.19.145 d. UHS-VU 3.7.25

Marcellin 10.12.72 d. Parkdale Vultures 8.9.57

A real finals-type atmosphere came to Boss James Reserve with Hampton keen to continue the chase of Old Geelong, and Mazenod looking to make a big statement regarding their aspirations. This was an intense, physical affair in which no quarter was asked or given. Hampton’s Christian Carnovale and Cameron Morris finished the match with reports against their name; and their periodic absence was quite the hinderance to Rovers, as was their notoriously fickle goalkicking with six behinds registered before their first major. Mazenod had three goals on the board by this time, but two late six-pointers to Hampton cut the quarter time margin to a point. This was doubled in an even second term, but Rovers started to win the arm-wrestle in the third quarter. Mazenod showed that they were certainly worthy of their place in the top echelon of teams, but it was Hampton Rovers that held sway and put them out of the top four at the end of the round. Morris kicked four goals for Hampton Rovers and Carnovale was their best on the day. Rovers had few answers for Mazenod small forward Nick Pascuzzi, who kicked five goals, whilst Matt Fewings stood out for them around the ground. Monash Blues 11.17.83 d. Old Mentonians 3.5.23

The top two sides continued their good form whilst the merry-go-round continued to circle in the lower half of the top four. Here’s what took place… Hampton Rovers 13.12.90 d. Mazenod 11.8.74

Marcellin dealt Parkdale’s finals hopes a savage blow in a stirring victory at Marcellin College. Parkdale probably had more of the play early, but the hosts kicked straight to lead by two at the first change. Marcellin established a break by kicking three goals to one in the second quarter, and the Vultures did not have the wherewithal on the day to make an impression. Three more goals in the third term increased the margin to 21 points turning for home, and although Parkdale had slightly the better of the last quarter the defences held sway enough for the home side to keep the lead and take the four points. Lachlan Rush kicked four goals for Marcellin, for whom Mitchell Jones and Daniel di Paola were best. Parkdale were best served by the ever-reliable Charlie Yee and Kai Colella, with Sam Hart kicking three goals.

Old Geelong 21.14.140 d. Preston Bullants 9.8.62 Preston continued their trend of pushing their opponents for a good portion of the game, but falling away in the second half. In this match they conceded a five-goal break in the first quarter, but kicked six goals to four in the middle quarters to be within only 24 points at the final change. Had they started well in the final quarter it may have been an interesting finish, but Old Geelong put the hammer down, kicking ten goals to one and establishing a crushing 78-point margin to solidify their position in the top four. Best-on-ground Joseph Griffiths kicked seven goals for Old Geelong, with Nick Freeman contributing four and Connor Dixon three. The VAFA congratulates Luke Green from Preston Bullants who has been nominated as the weekends Rising Star. Luke has been a regular in the Preston senior side throughout this season and has come back from adversity after suffering a knee injury earlier this year. What the club said: Luke Green has been a shining light for the Preston Bullants this season as he has held down a key back position in the seniors and U19s. Luke’s season started with a serious knee dislocation. His rehab was determined , following advice never missing a milestone. On his return he immediately impacted games.

Luke’s ability to read the game combined with “ an engine “ results in him becoming an influential player in taking intercept marks. It’s a rarity to see a player of his height be clean under pressure below his knees. It doesn’t happen by chance as his intensity at training is great for such a player and will continue to improve.

While the season finished without a win next to the club’s name, Pia has found a regular spot in the line up and will be looking to take the next step in her footballing career in 2023.

words , he leads by his actions which is loved by his team mates and coaches. They say that tall players take a while to develop. Luke is a favourable exception, at training he works on his craft , knowledge for the game as well as his fitness. Around the club off field he always helps without fuss or fanfare. We all look forward to seeing Luke progress in the next couple of years and fulfil his potential.

Therry Penola recorded one of their biggest wins this season against St Mary’s Salesian on Saturday. Sitting safely out of the relegation zone in seventh position with six wins for the year, they were able to kick away with the game in the first quarter with 11 goals to none at quarter time.

Can anyone knock PEGS off the top of the line?

The defence of PEGS was on full display and so was the forward line with Jordan Erougian kicking three and Riley Simmons also kicking three. It seems PEGS are in the box seat to take top position on the ladder at seasons end as they play Therry Penola and Oakleigh in the final two rounds of the season. Kew and Oakleigh provided us with one of the closer games in round 16 despite the end score perhaps not reflecting that. Kew jumped out of the blocks incredibly quickly with 10 goals in the first quarter before Oakleigh found their rhythm and got within five points at the three-quarter time break. Kew however, broke away in the last quarter kicking five goals to one as they maintain a top two position on the ladder. Meanwhile Aaron Cloke continued to impress for Oakleigh with another four goals on the weekend bringing his goal tally for the year to 66. Kew will next week play Prahran Assumption in what should be a tight contest.

Another club who stormed to victory was a huge 121-point victory was Old Camberwell. Up against Whitefriars, Camberwell only kicked three goals in the first quarter but after quarter time had the control to run out big winners, finishing with 22 goals.

The Division One ladder is beginning to take shape after a weekend of big wins across the board. Pleasant Melbourne conditions on Saturday afternoon saw ladder leaders PEGS continue their winning ways with a 57-point win over Prahran Assumption. PEGS were able to keep them goalless at quarter time while at the main break they kept them to just one goal.

Brenton Egglestone was busy up forward with seven goals and teammate Kane O’Halloran was also a lively presence with five goals while Nicholas Castaldi was named best on ground. It’s been a difficult season to navigate for St Mary’s and they’ll face Glen Eira out at Packer Park this weekend.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 14 DIVISION 1 MEN’S

Simon Bennett had six goals to his name and was best on ground for Old Camberwell with sharpshooter Sam Murphy also busy in front of goal as he kicked three majors.

The final game of round 16 saw Old Peninsula go head-to-head with Glen Eira. It was a gallant effort from Old Peninsula, leading at each break including a six-point lead at three quarter time. Cooper Denton provided support down forward alongside veteran Shaun Payze but it wasn’t quite enough as the Gryphons edged clear in the last quarter to win by 22 Willempoints. Van Denderan was key to the Gryphons as he was named one of the best with teammates Hayden Bass, Sean Bass and Alex Erwin-Ross all chipping in with three goals each. Glen Eira sits comfortably in third with a chance of a potential top two spot still on the cards as they play St Mary’s Salesian and Therry Penola in the final two rounds. Round 17 will continue to cause some movement within the top four and the relegation zone which makes the end to the season all the more exciting in division one.

Ivanhoe AFC has been all the rage in 2022. West Brunswick, step by step have been closing the gap. Over the weekend, made an emphatic announcement. Old Paradians are hanging onto third spot by half a game as Brunswick and MHSOB fought out a thrilling draw. The two sides were evenly matched throughout the afternoon with the Unicorns holding a slender four point lead at three quarter time. Both sides had their fare share of scoring shots in the final term with Brunswick kicking 4.1.25 to MHSOB 3.3.21 and scores level on the final siren. Will Suhr has put together back to back best on ground performances for MSHOB while Tahj Haddock was the man named best afield for NOBS. The challenge to stay in touch with the top four gets tougher for the Unicorns this weekend when they face West Brunswick who are absolutely flying at the moment.

Manningham hasn’t stopped trying all season long. Michael Muller (3) again hit the scoreboard for the Cobras. While Luke Morris is probably the man who will come away with the clubs best and fairest at seasons Aquinasend. can string a couple of wins together when they travel to Ted Ajani Reserve this weekend to face Bulleen Templestowe. But, the Ants are back in business.

For the third time in a row Bulleen have come away winners over Yarra Old Grammarians. It’s the first time since the last game of 2021 that they’ve kicked over 100 points. There are many sides in Division 2 that would claim to have the wood over the Ants, but this is a form line that goes the other way.

With two games remaining, this season should be looked at as a success for the club that found itself with one win in 2021. And have currently got five to their name.

They’ll be playing in Division 2 again in 2023 with an eye to building on what they’ve set as foundations this year.

Brunswick faces Power House with a chance to extend the percentage gap on MHSOB. The Magpies took full advantage over Ivanhoe AFC to stop the winning streak at 13. West Brunswick’s winning streak is now at nine games and will be looking to hit the finals with 11 wins in a row next to their names. They were never headed by the Hoers through the afternoon, extending their lead at every change. Finishing 33 points ahead of the ladder leaders. Luke Buckler (3), and Paddy Sawaya (3) were the danger men in front of goal for the Pies. After kicking 13 goals last week, Billy Drake was held to just a solitary goal. The Hoers were without coach Ash Close, prized recruit Scott Selwood and held to 6 goals for the afternoon. Their lowest score for the year. They’ll face off against Manningham Cobras in Round 17, they could completely flip the script on themselves and turn in their biggest score of the season after the let down of the weekend. Matt Aver at Aquinas has been threatening this year to kick himself a big bag of goals, over the weekend against the Cobras he did just that. Eight big ones next to his name, he has been a star this season. They collected a comfortable four points on the weekend. While they can’t move from the middle of the table, it’s promising signs for Aquinas. Winning late season home and away games can springboard them into the 2023 pre-season with some confidence and momentum.

House didn’t have much to cheer about, but like Manningham Cobras have fought their way right through the season without ever raising the white flag. Ben Circosta (2) can hold his head up, as can Luke Stubbs who has again found his way onto the best players list. The green, blue and purple monsters can cement their spot in the finals facing Yarra Old Grammarians this weekend at Garvey Oval. Despite the class of the top two sides, this Old Paradians side on their day will feel confident they can match it with the best of them.

Michael Scott has kicked goals in every game he’s played this year for the Bushrangers. Another bag of five on the weekend has him definitely in calculations for the clubs best and fairest, and even team of the year honours. He’s been sensational coming back this year. Old Paradians managed 45 scoring shots against Power House. Had it not been for inaccuracy in front of goal, it could have been a significantly higher margin. Blair Healy (4), and Luke Brock (4) had a hand in goals, as well as Adam Nolan (3), and Anthony Cafari Power(3).

Sharing the load must have been written at the top of the whiteboard for most of the teams this weekend, with a majority of them with more goalkickers than you can count on one hand.

Fourth spot still up for grabs

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 18 DIVISION 3 MEN’S

Emmaus St Leo’s have let what was almost definitely their last finals chance go after going down to Richmond Central by 31 points at Kevin Bartlett Reserve. The Animals were in it for the first quarter before defensive lapses allowed the Snakes to kick seven goals to just one in the second. Undoubtedly the better team all day, the home side were kept quiet as Emmaus St Leo’s mounted a mini comeback after the main break, before a five-goal final term saw the Animals’ finals hopes slip away. For Emmaus St Leo’s, Matt Hill (3), Riley Thompson (2), and Jonathan Greensides (2) kept the team in it, while Kieran Mair took top honours. As usual, Jack Bilson (5) and Jordan Miller (2) starred in the forward line for Richmond Central, but Aaron Pearson (2) was best-on.

Parkside’s ten individual goalkickers have seen them with an upset 4-point win over ladder-leaders South Melbourne Districts at Lindsay Hassett Oval. The Bloods were nearly the better side all game, and took a buffer of 15 points going into the main break. Their dominance only continued into the third term, but what must have been a rousing three-quarter-time address got the Red Devils back into gear, and they kicked seven goals to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Simon Mackie (2) was Parkside’s only multiple-goalscorer with nine teammates getting on the board for one, including Michael Romano who was named best-on. For South Melbourne Districts, Leigh Sfetkidis (3) and Michael Dufficy (2) were once again targets inside 50, but taking top honours was David Commins. A six-goal final quarter sealed the deal for North Brunswick, who left Rathmines Road Reserve 39-point winners after comfortably beating Hawthorn. It was an arm-wrestle for the first half as the Hawks took just a two-point lead into half time, before the Bulls slowly started putting their foot down after the break. They led by two goals at three-quarter-time and then the flood gates opened for the away side, despite Hawthorn getting some opportunities in front of goal. William Meehan (3), James Smith (2), Jake Davoren (2), and Justin Raiti (1) were the only goalscorers as Eamonn Avery topped the best players list. For North Brunswick, Joseph Flynn (4), Andrew Ramzy (3), Kali Dawborn (2), and Matthew David (2) kicked a majority of their side’s majors, but it was Simon Woodward who took top Westbournehonours.

With two games left, the sun is slowly starting to set for a few of our Division 3 Men’s teams as a cold Melbourne day provided a dreary backdrop to some chances gone begging. The top three is all but locked and loaded, with South Melbourne Districts, Elsternwick, and Canterbury all certainties, though where they land at the end of the home and away season remains unknown.

Grammar has witnessed to a 210-point thumping win by Elsternwick against the Westbourne Grammarians. It didn’t take long for the Wickers to get the ball rolling, literally, as they scored eight goals in the first time and limited the Warriors to zero. Even with a goal on the board in the second, it continually went from bad to worse for the home side, as the point buffer increased at the main break by 30, then 75, before Elsternwick kicked nine goals in the final term to really hit the final nail in the coffin. With too many multiplegoalscorers to name, Matt Ball (8) and Richard Main (6) led the charge for the away side, as did Dylan Jones (6) who was best-on. For the Westbourne Grammarians, Maxmillian Paspa kicked their only goal and Nick Ryan took top honours. For the last time in the home and away season, North Brunswick will take to Allard Park and welcome ladderleaders South Melbourne Districts, who are coming off an untimely loss. The Bloods have had one hand on top spot for the better part of the year, but will need to take down the Bulls if they’re any chance of holding onto it.

After their largest loss of the year, the Westbourne Grammarians will rally and head to Canterbury Sportsground and try their luck against Canterbury. The Cobras have had a pretty consistent season and will return from their bye with their sights set firmly on a top-2 finish. Still high off their rather large win in round sixteen, Elsternwick return home to take on Emmaus St Leo’s at Holmes Todd Oval. Round 16 of the VAFA saw an incredibly close result, a team’s heartbreak, a team’s jubilation and a team put another tick on their resume. The round also saw the division’s leading goal scorer tally get more interesting as Masala’s Declan Fowler (62) now leads La Trobe’s Riley Alexander (60) with Fowler having one game left in the home & away season. Albert Park took on La Trobe in an extremely important match for both teams but more so for the Falcons with the game an elimination final for the home side. La Trobe managed to get off to a strong start kicking 4 unanswered goals to gain an early advantage. Albert Park came out strong in the second quarter in what was a low-scoring part of the game. La Trobe came out of the break kicking six goals, doubling their score in the process. Leading by 47 points heading into the final term, the Falcons needed a push and they put together their best quarter however it wasn’t enough to topple La Trobe who added on another four goals in what was a quality 62-point win. Jack Lee led the goal scoring for the Falcons with 2 majors. Other contributors included Enver Krasnic, Alexander Evans, Tyson Cattle and Reece FrenchLightfoot who kicked a goal each. Riley Alexander and Matthew Ogle kicked 3 goals each for the Trobers. Teammates Patrick McCormack and Joseph De Angelis kicked 2 goals each. The best for the Falcons include Zak Knight, Jack Amies and Jack Twite. Best players for the Trobers include Robert Fawcett, Andy Castles and Archie Conboy

The Razorbacks capitalised further with a massive third quarter kicking seven goals. Down by 24 going into the final break, the JOCS needed to have a strong finish and that’s exactly what they did, kicking four goals in a row to take a 1-point lead. With 15 minutes to go Razorback Trent Ryan kicked his second goal and ultimately the matchwinner. With the siren sounding 10 minutes later, it was the Razorbacks that were victorious by five points in the divisions’ match of the round.

St Johns will now look to rebound and chase down a chance at the double chance as they take on Eley Park away. Swinburne will now host Masala in what will be a huge match for both teams. The final match of the round saw Masala take on Eley Park in what was a major game for the Tigers. The game for many was anyone’s for the taking as the Sharks won the last meeting by a goal. Masala came out of the gates strong starting the game off well kicking six goals whilst only keeping the Sharks to a single goal.

Masala was still able to keep their momentum during the second term adding another four goals to go into the major break by 47 points.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 20 DIVISION 4 MEN’S

St John’s got off to the stronger start kicking four goals to one, taking a 16-point lead. Swinburne then started to build momentum in the second kicking two goals whilst keeping the JOCS to a single goal for the quarter.

He has a fantastic ability to find the ball and incredible goal nous, which makes him a very difficult player to defend. Love your work, Tits.

Jules has been an absolute superstar for Glen Eira and stuck by the club through thick and thin. A multiple club best and fairest winner, 2016 Premiership Captain, 2016 Division 3 Hutchison Medallist as Best & Fairest and multiple time club leading goal kicker. Jules has been a tremendous competitor over a long period of time and is one of the best contested marks to have ever graced the Packer Park turf. A ripping bloke off the field, the Glen Eira Gryphons have been privileged to have had Jules play 150 games for our club – congratulations big fella, you deserve all the accolades coming your way.

300 Vaughan Coffey (Glen Eira Gryphons)

Vaughan was recruited from the front bar at the Racecourse Hotel at 2am on the morning of his first game for the Gryphons way back in 2003. A fantastic amateur footy story as the young bloke with the blonde spike haircut fell in love with the club and chalks up game number 300. A member of the 2010 Reserves Premiership team, Vaughan has been a fantastic contributor playing a mixture of seniors and reserves football and a few thirds games in later years. From a dashing wingman in his youth, Vaughan transformed himself into one of the Gryphons key defenders and one of the very best kick-in men our club has had the pleasure to witness. Awarded Life Membership in 2018, we thank Vaughan for all that he has contributed to the Gryphons over the best part of two decades. The clearances were going all Melbourne Uni’s way and the St Marys defence was being put under real pressure for the whole quarter. It was a good effort by the St Marys

VAFA WOMEN’S REPORT THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 30

Kristin Sims Access team lists on GameDay via the VAFA website or the GameDay App on your mobile device.

The third quarter saw a slower game being played as St Marys tightened their defence early on, but it wasn’t enough to stop Melbourne Uni from staying out of their forward line. As the game went on Melbourne Uni continued their impressive display across the ground, they stayed strong in both attack and defence. The Melbourne Uni backline was so impressive they didn’t allow a single scoring shot for St Marys. It was an impressive victory for Melbourne Uni to end the season on.

Everything was on the line for Caulfield Grammarians if they wanted to hold onto third spot when they took on West Brunswick. Both sides shared the ball in the first quarter, with neither looking to have control of the game. The backlines of both teams were kept busy with intercept marks on either side keeping the goals clear. West Brunswick went on a run throughout the last part of the first quarter where they were using the middle of the ground more. After a great piece of play they were on the board with an early lead. West Brunswick kept their momentum for the beginning of the first term, running the ball hard through the middle of the ground but struggled again to find their forwards with their entries inside fifty. An unfortunate mistake from the West Brunswick defence got Caulfield their first goal of the game with a handy kick in front of goals. The rest of the quarter continued to be an arm wrestle throughout the middle of the ground with both sides unable to capitalise on their attack. West Brunswick were doing all they could to get the upset win pushing the defence of Caulfield for the third quarter but were let down by their goal kicking. With neither team kicking a goal in the third quarter the game was set up for an exciting final term. Caulfield had all the ball early, but the West Brunswick backline were standing up to the pressure by forcing errors and limiting goals. Another error in defence by West Brunswick got another on the board for Caulfield, from here it would be up to West Brunswick to respond. Some quick thinking from Caulfield saw them grab another goal quickly which would be enough to guarantee victory and for them to claim third place. Melbourne Uni were showing their best football early against St Marys, running hard and finding space to get the ball inside their forward line. It is the exact kind of football that has seen Melbourne Uni make their way to the top four this season.

The third quarter was at a slower pace and more reserved attack for Kew but they did not slow down in their defence still holding back Old Xaverians enough to stop them from scoring. With a six goal lead heading into the last term the Kew defence needed to hold up for one last quarter to get victory. While the defence definitely held on in the last term to keep Old Xaverians away from goals and allowing now scoring shots. The attack also came out and added a few more goals to give the team a nice boost before the final siren.

Kew were hot out the gates early taking advantage of a clearance and opening the scoring against Old Xaverians. The game continued to be hotly contested with both teams playing high pressure football for the whole first quarter. Both teams traded goals early on before Kew started to get the better run in attack and get themselves on a run. The result in the second quarter saw Kew take hold of the game and score four goals keeping Old Xaverians scoreless. This was the style of play that has seen Kew sitting at the top part of the ladder for the whole season. Their defensive wall was stopping any run from Old Xaverians in attack and causing turnovers across the middle of the ground.

And then there were five…

Melbourne Uni had all the answers and were keeping the ball locked in their half of the ground.

backline to limit the goals Melbourne Uni scored early on. St Marys gave their best effort to get the ball into their attacking fifty but Melbourne Uni were always close by to put pressure on the ball handler and cause a turnover.

St Kevins got off to an uncharacteristically slow start in their game against Marcellin. Marcellin were keeping St Kevins accountable early and limiting their impact with the ball, keeping them away from goals, for a team that has been dangerous in front of goals this year it was a great start for Marcellin. For an even better start it would be Marcellin who would get the first goal of the match, keeping St Kevins scoreless for the first term.

The game remained even for the second quarter as Marcellin continued to slow down St Kevins running game. It took until part way through the second quarter but St Kevins first goal would come from a remarkable shot at goal that got the whole team excited. St Kevins went on a run in attack for a few minutes after the goal, but Marcellin would hold off the attack and score again to go into halftime with a narrow two point lead. After the main break St Kevins came out looking faster and more determined than the second quarter, with only one loss this season they started playing like they didn’t want another in the last game of the year. They upped their pressure on Marcellin and the result was a three goal quarter that gave them a handy lead heading in the final term. There were some promising signs for Marcellin early, their defence had St Kevins struggling with possession. St Kevins started to stand up and after a tussle on the boundary line they continued to up their intensity. Their ball movement was strong, creating handball chains and using the middle of the ground to get to the goals. As they have done all season St Kevins kept their opponent goalless for three quarters and ended the season with a great win. 1 FINALS TIPS Kew FCv Caulfield Grammarians Uni Women’s v West Brunswick
