The Amateur Footballer 2024 - Week 17

SEASON 2024 - AUGUST 17

Women’s time to shine!

After a successful start to the VAFA Finals Series last week with the commencement of the Men’s Thirds finals matches, this weekend marks the start of finals for our Premier B Women’s and Divisional Women’s football competitions.

Williamstown CYMS will be looking to continue their unbeaten winning streak in Premier B in 2024, Old Brighton and Marcellin look to be the standout teams in Division 1, Glen Eira/Old McKinnon appear the team to beat in Division 2, Therry Penola are the yardstick in Division 3, and St Kevin’s Division 4 women’s team is showing strong depth in their list again.

The challenge is clearly laid out for their rival teams but I’m sure there is plenty of excitement amongst all our women’s teams who have qualified for this weekend’s semi-finals that will lead to competitive games and possibly some upsets!

In order to host these finals at neutral venues, we have been working hard to be able to provide access to appropriate ovals, including Coburg City Oval, La Trobe University and Whitefriars College.

Over the past 3 years, we have established a solid partnership with Merri-bek Council and Coburg FC for use of their recognised state league competition ground for our women’s finals, whilst La Trobe has a ground surface and modern facilities that is highly sought after and used by AFL Clubs. Whitefriars College has been a traditional finals venue for the VAFA that also delivers a great player and spectator environment. No doubt our VAFA women who will play at these venues will be treated to a great experience.

These costs in turn necessitate a ground entry fee to patrons and for this round the prices are:

Adults $12

Concession $7

Children U12 FREE

We trust all spectators will be cognisant of these facts and remain respectful to our gate attendants and security staff upon entering the venues.

A reminder to those VAFA supporters who may be planning to watch more than one finals match this weekend, that you can jump on the VAFA website to purchase a weekend pass that will give you discounted entry when attending multiple venues.

The Division 4 Women’s competition are not yet at semifinal stage, so the highest ranked teams in that competition, MCC and Kew, will host those finals at their home grounds (Beaumaris Secondary College and Victoria Park Kew) with no gate entry required.

we trust you enjoy the occasion in the true Amateur spirit!

With the Men’s Thirds Finals also continuing this weekend, all up there are 19 VAFA finals to be played over Saturday and Sunday.

A shout out of thanks to the Presidents of De La Salle, Whitefriars, and Old Brighton football clubs for working with us, Council and their community stakeholders, in making their home grounds available for hosting VAFA finals this week.

All finals come with the extra burden of costs to provide for ground/venue hire fees, security, match day managers, and the ultimate awarding of medals and trophies on Grand Final days.

Due to there being 12 teams in the Thirds Division 3 North Men’s, we have provided for a final 5, so they will be moving to semi-final stage this week. As was the case with last week’s Men’s Thirds Divisional semi-finals, these games will be played at the home ground of the highest ranked teams. The Preliminary finals for all other Men’s Thirds are being hosted at neutral venues this weekend.

Wherever you are headed this weekend, we trust you enjoy the occasion in the true Amateur spirit!

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S

New flag favourite in William Buck Premier Men’s?

After knocking off the Top 2 teams in the past fortnight, have the Cardinals become the premiership favourites in the top-flight?

Old Scotch made it 8 straight wins and added St Kevin’s to last week’s triumph over Old Brighton with an impressive 8-goal win at TH King Oval.

It ended a run of 9 consecutive losses to SKOB since returning to Premier Men’s in 2018 and it couldn’t have been much more emphatic.

St Kevin’s won the clearance battle but Old Scotch controlled the game post-clearance with relentless pressure that forced SKOB into turnovers.

Old Scotch also dominated contested marks and, despite the absence of spearhead James Tarrant, were more efficient Inside 50 with 5 multiple goalscorers.

The win closes the gap to half-a-game between SKOB & the Cards as the race continues to tighten.

Mark Gnatt (Old Scotch): “It was a really even team performance across the ground. Our ability to work together and defend the ground and put pressure on the opposition was most pleasing.

“Dougie Lawrence and Charlie Cormack were outstanding in defence and Matty Bennett played an important role for us at fullback. Will Clark continued his good form and our forward line was well led by Ryan Valentine as the small forwards got to work with their pressure at ground level.”

Anthony Lynch (St Kevin’s): “Scotch were outstanding from first minute to final siren. All respect to Gnatty and their group - they taught us a lesson in the intensity required to be a contender.

“Our boys were surprisingly flat across the board and we struggled to have one winner on the day. It’s a rare performance from this group, so we will back them in to turn it around, but we will also reward blokes who are prepared to dig in when things are not going their way.”

The upset of the weekend saw University Blacks roll a red-hot Old Xaverians that had won 4 straight.

Xavs booted the first 3 goals before Blacks responded with a couple in time-on of the first term.

The visitors’ confidence & belief grew as they added 4 goals to 1 in the second term to lead by 13 points at the major break.

Xavs hit back with 2 quick goals before the game evolved into a defensive struggle that saw Blacks grind out two more majors to re-establish a 16-point three-quarter time lead.

The hosts desperately threw everything at the Blacks’ defence late, but they managed to hang on for a thrilling 7-point win that elevates them a game-and-a-half above the relegation zone.

Dale Bower (Uni Blacks): “Our players came prepared to bring great effort and pressure. We wanted to ensure we played the right way to honour Lou Vescio’s 100th game for the Blacks. We stuck at it all day. I am very proud of them.”

Dan Donati (Old Xavs): “Really disappointing day in the end. Firstly, credit to Blacks for the game they brought - thoroughly deserved the win.

“We were a little off in the first half and struggled to connect, and from there just couldn’t execute when we had the chance, and we had plenty of them.

“I felt it was a game of errors from us and after a great month or so, we’ve let a winnable game slip. So, now it’s on the boys to regroup.”

That slip opened the door for Collegians to close the gap if they could beat University Blues at Melbourne Uni.

The Lions booted 3 goals in 7 minutes in time-on to open a 14-point quarter-time lead before the Blues kicked the first 3 goals to snatch the lead midway through the second term.

The reigning premiers again flexed their muscle in time-on, unleashing a withering burst that delivered 5 goals in 6 minutes.

A further 6 goals to 2 in the third quarter blew the game open before the Blues kicked the only 3 goals of the last term to reduce the final margin to 28 points.

Collegians are back in the hunt for fourth, drawing level with Xavs on 36 points.

Jordie McKenzie (Collegians): “We were able to gain some dominance late in the second quarter. Our midfield led the way and we got some damaging looks from clearance.

“We were able to keep up a strong brand of footy in the third before a stalemate in the last. It was a very pleasing result and great reward for effort.

Guy Martyn (Uni Blues): “Collegians kicked five goals between the 22 and 28-minute mark of the second quarter after I felt we were on top of the game. This six-minute period proved to be the difference.

“Other than that, it was a very even game and I was pleased with how we played.”

It was a massive game in the relegation race as Old Melburnians hosted Fitzroy at Elsternwick Park.

The Roys got a flyer, racking up 20 Inside 50s to 3 in the opening term to lead by 25 points at the first break.

OMs settled in the second quarter, booting 3 goals to 1 and reducing the half-time margin to 14 points.

The Roys surged again in time-on in the third term, booting 3 goals in 3.5 minutes to head to the last change with a 23-point lead.

OMs opened the final term with 4 consecutive behinds before 2 goals in 2 minutes got them back within 9 points midway through the quarter.

But Fitzroy dug in and despite conceding 16 Inside to 8 in the final term, held off OMs for their first-ever Premier Men’s away win.

It’s a victory that keeps their hopes of remaining in the top tier alive, now just half a game behind OMs and one game behind St Bernard’s with 3 to play.

Travis Ronaldson (Fitzroy): “A good game of footy in great conditions. Both sides had their moments with some impressive ball movement in a high-standard contest.

“We were pleased with the way we started and were able to build a small buffer by three-quarter time which we needed after a couple of injuries led to us running out of gas late.

“I was super proud of the group and our effort and willingness to work hard all day.”

Paul Satterley (OMs): “Fitzroy gave themselves a great platform in the first quarter which meant we chased all day. We knew if they were afforded space they would be very capable on offence.

“We gave ourselves every chance in the final 30 minutes however 8 shots for 3.5 just didn’t cut it.

The third club in the relegation mix is St Bernard’s, who jumped Old Brighton at Brighton Beach Oval, kicking 4 of the first 5 goals before the league-leaders booted 3 in 4 minutes to get back within a point at the first break.

Brighton’s efficiency up forward was on show in the middle two quarters as they booted 10.2 to 5.9 despite having 2 fewer Inside 50s.

That finishing polish set up a 22-point three-quarter time lead which the Tonners blew out with 6 goals to 1 for a comfortable 57-point win.

SKOB’s loss re-establishes Old Brighton’s 6-point lead at the top of the table.

Marcel Bruin (Old Brighton): “Really important win against a dangerous side who came to play. Bernard’s served it up to us and showed us the work rate we needed to have to compete.

“Our mids got to work, with Sam Flockhart providing good service and effort. Backs tightened up and the forwards connected throughout the day.”

Steve Alessio (St Bernard’s): “Once again we showed some really good signs in the first 3 quarters of the game. Our inaccuracy in front of goals didn’t allow us to capitalise on a lot of our good work to create those scoring opportunities.

“As a group we will reload, freshen up some players, hopefully get a few back from the sidelines and look to play our best football in the run home.”

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER WOMEN’S

St Kevin’s triumph in a commanding win

In the opening match, Kew recorded a comprehensive 43-point victory over Melbourne University Women’s to reinforce their position in third place.

It only took two disposals for Kew to get on the board with a major, with Dakota Villiva delivering the first clearance into the arms of Gabriella Rawlings, who converted truly.

Both sides exhibited brilliant passages of play throughout the first term, however, Kew’s defence was too strong for Melbourne University to penetrate, leaving them scoreless for the quarter with their only real shot at goal a set shot from Maddi Katerelos that was marked on the line.

Melbourne University finally got on the board in the second with a goal to Asha Price, however, Kew were still able to extend their lead to 21 points by half time. The game opened up in the second half, with both teams scoring more frequently. Kew managed to add another 41 points to their scoreline, while Melbourne University added three goals to take their score to 26.

Jolyn Collins and Maddi Katerelos were brave in defeat, while Dakota Villiva was a welcome return after a week off, earning best on once again. Highlights up forward included the efforts of Asha Price and Kew captain Rachel McDonough, who finished with three goals apiece.

St Kevin’s showed no mercy when hosting Collegians in a 111-point destruction, their largest victory of the season.

Kate Stanton set the tone early, booting the first goal of the day as they took a 22-0 lead into the first change. In one of the most dominant quarters of football by any side this year, they piled on a further 8 goals in the second term. Hannah Smith contributed three of her own, including a brilliantly crafted pick up and snap to cap off a huge quarter.

The second half was much the same, as the rampaging Saints put Collegians to the sword. Holly Kenealy kicked five majors while Kate Stanton finished the day with four and best-on-ground honours. Hannah Smith’s trio took her tally to 21 for the season, sitting third overall in the goal kicking leaderboard charts. For Collegians, Krystal Russell continued a strong run of recent form to be named her side’s best on the day.

Over at Camberwell Reserve, Caulfield Grammarians gave Old Scotch an early scare before fading away in the second half.

The first term was closely contested, with Sarah Kenny kicking the first two goals of the game for Caulfield, before Old Scotch fought back with two of their own to lead by a solitary point at the first change.

Play remained close in the second but due to Old Scotch’s superior accuracy, the Stars were able to extend the margin to 12 points before the siren sounded for half time. Old Scotch’s dominance shone through in the third quarter, as they kicked four goals while holding Caulfield scoreless to shoot down any hopes the Grammarians had of an upset victory.

To Caulfield’s credit, they fought back in the final term, winning the individual quarter by 2 points, however, it was only enough to bring the margin back to 36 points. Georgia Foran stood up in defence for Caulfield, while Sarah Kenny was strong in attack and Maggie Minchin did well as a stand-in ruck.

Caulfield should be encouraged that they were able to challenge a top two side, especially considering they did so without key players such as Matilda Mottram, Isobel Hartog and Kate McCarthy. For Scotch, Emma Robins and Maxine Wells were the standout players on the day.

West Brunswick continued their strong form with a fifth consecutive win, this time defeating Old Yarra Cobras by 21 points.

Coming into the game in fourth place on the ladder but with a weak percentage, their position remained vulnerable with games still to play against ladder-leaders St Kevin’s and fellow finals hopefuls Caulfield.

Understanding the stakes, the Magpies were able to get the job done with a four-quarter performance. The load was shared, with six individual goal kickers contributing to West Brunswick’s 7.3 (45) scoreline – Brighdin Walsh was the only Magpie to score multiple goals (2) in a teambest performance. Audrey Fithall and Melissa Johnson also earnt recognition from their coach for their standout games.

Lauren Atkinson

Cecilia Baldassarre led the Cobras’ forward line as she has done all season, booting three goals, while Evie Lee was named their best.

Monash Blues travelled to Piranha Park to take on Coburg, where the Blues came out on top in a last-ditch effort to escape relegation. Coburg held the lead throughout the first half as Monash wasted their shots at goal, only registering behinds. However, the Blues came out of the rooms after half time with all guns blazing, hitting the scoreboard while not allowing Coburg any additional forays.

By the final siren, the scoreline read 2.2 (14) to 3.9 (27) in Monash Blues’ favour. Captain Alicia Myers led her side to their second win of the season, embodying the team values and executing the game plan to perfection. Clare Konstanty also played an important role in the victory, kicking two of their three goals. For Coburg, Grace Painting and Ella Tyson battled hard, demonstrating great resilience.

With three rounds to go in the William Buck Premier Women’s home and away season, every match counts with a number of teams still in contention for a place in the finals series.

A huge clash between Kew and Caulfield Grammarians opens the round, where a win to Caulfield could shake up the top four. Another battle between two heavyweights of the competition sees West Brunswick come up against the undefeated St Kevin’s. Riding a wave of momentum, anything is possible in this clash if the Magpies can capitalise on their opportunities.

MUW FC host Coburg, whilst Collegians will travel to face Monash Blues at Frearson Oval. Rounding out the weekend, the Old Yarra Cobras will come up against Old Scotch.

PREMIER B MEN’S

A Trinity and Camberwell draw complicates chaotic finish

The second draw of the Premier B season has created even more uncertainty at the top of the table as six teams grapple for a spot in September.

Coming into Round 15 on nine wins apiece, Old Trinity and Old Camberwell couldn’t be separated at Chelsworth Park, the Ts hauling back a 37-point margin to escape with two points, 12.15 (87) to 14.3 (87).

“It’s pleasing to see we get 37 points down, and the players and coaches don’t panic, they stuck to the formula we’ve worked on,” said Ts coach Donald McDonald.

The Wellers’ excellent defensive structure and clean transition of the football from the contest to the outside saw the visitors make the early running, with Ben Hart, Jimmy Allen and “lightning” wingman Caleb Finlayson among Old Camberwell coach Anson Brownless’ best.

“They came late, but geez they came hard. We were lucky to hold on, I thought,” said Anson Brownless.

Ahead of the Wellers is a challenging two-game home stand: first the red-hot De La Salle, then the Old Haileyburians at Gordon Barnard Reserve. “We’ll know in a couple of weeks where we’re at - we’ve been competitive against these top sides; we just can’t do it for four quarters.”

With Old Ivanhoe’s heavy defeat at the hands of De La Salle, both the Ts and Wellers are half-a-game ahead of the Hoers in fourth and fifth respectively, with a percentage advantage of 13.51 giving Donald McDonald’s team the spot in the four.

“We were a bit down and out last year, eighth on the ladder, it was a really tough year,” McDonald said of the Ts, who were 6-12 last year and finished 2023 with four successive losses.

The Ts host Caulfield Grammarians next week at Daley Oval, before rounding out the home-and-away season with visits to Williamstown CYMS and Beaumaris.

De La Salle’s sixth consecutive victory was its most comprehensive of this season, Nick Hyland’s team sending a tremor through the competition with a 91-point drubbing of Old Ivanhoe to continue its pursuit of first spot on the ladder.

De La Salle, the competition’s highest-scoring team, brought up the ton for the fifth time this season, romping away to a 22.17 (149) to 8.10 (58) victory.

Midfielder Fraser Cameron was remarkable, booting five goals in his time resting forward from nine shots on goal

“He’s had his injury issues throughout the season, it’s been a bit of a frustrating year so far,” said his Coach, Nick Hyland. “He can do it in the air, he can do it at ground level.”

De La’s run comes with an average margin of 56.5 points - the lowest winning margin, a 26-point defeat of the Bloods in Round 14.

But the competition is tight enough that De La’s position in the four isn’t necessarily unimpeachable - Old Camberwell, fifth on the ladder, is just six points behind.

“We’re still not even guaranteed a finals spot yet. Two of our last three are against teams that we’ve lost to, and the other is against a team we beat by a point,” said Hyland, with the Wellers, SBMT, and then Old Geelong ahead.

Old Ivanhoe coach Jarrod Gieschen would be glad for some reinforcements and will be quick to move on from a blemish on an otherwise encouraging season in Premier B - its first in the division since 2014.

“We’re not even worried about outcomes for the rest of the year now…we have been really hard at the footy and good on the inside, that’ll be our focus,” Gieschen said.

A meeting with the in-form Williamstown CYMS looms this week at Chelsworth Park - not exactly a happy hunting ground for the Hoers, who are 2-5 at home this year.

Williamstown CYMS are out of the relegation zone for the first time since Round 2, winning a critical game against Beaumaris and in turn plunges the Caulfield Grammarians into ninth spot.

The CYs have won two of their last three games - the other result being a draw against Old Haileybury - and are wedged between the Sharks (seventh, 20 points) and Fielders (ninth, 16 points).

“It was a very complete performance from us - this was where everything came together,” said CYs coach Con Terzoglou, his side able to dominate possession and territory after an opening to the match described as “Russian roulette,” such was the frequency of turnovers committed by both sides.

But the CYs soon gained ascendancy, enjoying an eight-goalsto-one run from the nine-minute mark of the first term to half time.

The Sharks were once again troubled by talented CYs forward Archi Manton, who after seven goals against Beaumaris in Round 6 punted five last weekend, four before half time.

“They’ve been more aware of their ladder position - we’ve had some conversations, but maybe we’ve been slightly naive at times,” said Sharks coach Josh Bourke.

The CYs have developed their contested game nicely this season but have been able to add real outside flair and scoring power in recent weeks - and it’s a big part of their late-season form.

“We want to take this now and test it against Old Ivanhoe and Old Trinity,” said Terzoglou.

Caulfield Grammarians started solidly against Old Haileybury but weren’t able to go with the ladder leaders at Glenhuntly Oval, sliding into the relegation zone with a 11.20 (86) to 6.6 (42) defeat.

While the Bloods didn’t kick too well in front of goal, they were much improved from Round 14’s loss to De La, where ill-discipline cost Daniel Ward’s men in the first half.

“The main culprit that hurt us against De La was our discipline and our ability to win at the contest…that’s something that we pride ourselves on. I thought (we were) back to getting closer to our standards, which was good,” Ward said.

Ward described his side’s recent run - one win, one draw, one loss over the last three weeks - as being similar to that of the Sydney Swans in the AFL, the Bloods in both competitions needing to find some late-season form going into finals.

“With the last three games (against Old Geelong, Old Camberwell and Old Ivanhoe), all those sides are in contention…all three of those offer great competition for our guys.”

Guy McKenna’s Fielders will need to win at least one more game this season if they wish to avoid relegation, with a tricky run home ahead of Old Trinity, Old Ivanhoe and Old Camberwell.

Finally, Old Geelong bounced back from a Round 14 loss to the Ts against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, kicking 11 goals to two across the middle quarters to win 18.13 (121) to 7.8 (50) at Brindisi Street.

With scores tied at quarter time, the OGs bolted clear with five goals in thirteen minutes in the second quarter, spreading the load across 12 different goalkickers - led by Tim Breadmore and Connor Dixon with three goals apiece.

Nathan Brown’s unit has spent five weeks in the top four, but faces a difficult run home, with Old Haileybury, Beaumaris and De La Salle ahead.

This weekend’s clash with the Bloods is a chance to rectify Round 7’s loss, where Brown’s men led at every break up to threequarter-time, after which the Old Haileyburians came storming home to win by 12 points.

PREMIER B WOMEN’S

Finals Bound: Williamstown CYMS soar to the finish with a perfect streak

The final round for the VAFA Premier B Women’s competition was one of hard-fought battles, surprising upsets, and a picture-perfect record from the undefeated Williamstown CYMS. Aquinas OC pulled off a gritty win over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, Old Geelong delivered a commanding performance, and Fitzroy overwhelmed Old Xaverians.

In a game that had all the makings of an upset, Aquinas OC dug deep to claim a thrilling 7.4 (46) – 5.8 (38) victory over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers. The result was a testament to Aquinas’ resilience and ability to rise to the occasion when it mattered most.

From the opening bounce, Aquinas set the tone with fierce tackling and relentless pressure around the contest. The midfield was instrumental, winning critical clearances and driving their team forward with precision kicking. The forward line was constantly threatening when in front of the big sticks, using their agility and sharp footwork to find space and hit the scoreboard. Aquinas’ backline held firm under pressure, repelling wave after wave of Tigers’ attacks in the dying minutes.

St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, who came into the match as favourites, found themselves on the back foot early but managed to claw their way back into the contest. Eliza Cooper, Mizuki Roche, and Erin Carroll led the charge, combining several key plays that kept the Tigers within striking distance. However, their inability to convert crucial opportunities in the final quarter proved costly.

Old Geelong put on an exhibition of attacking football, cruising to a dominant 13.7 (85) – 2.2 (14) win over Beaumaris. From the outset, Old Geelong looked a class above, executing their game plan with precision and ruthlessness.

Leanora Aruci, Juliet Grant, and Zoe Allen were the standout performers, consistently dominating the contest and setting the tempo for the match. Their ability to win the ball in tight and distribute effectively to their teammates was key to Old Geelong’s success. Up forward, Matilda Arthur and Sophia McCarthy put on a clinic, kicking four goals apiece.

Beaumaris struggled to match Old Geelong’s intensity and ball movement. Despite their best efforts and the performances of key players, including Livinia Stockdale, Cassandra Newman, and Taylah Tysoe, the visitors were unable to generate meaningful forward momentum. Their defence, overwhelmed by Old Geelong’s relentless pressure, found it difficult to contain the home side’s potent forward line.

Williamstown CYMS consolidated their undefeated streak for the season with a dominant 12.5 (75) – 3.6 (24) victory over Westbourne Grammarians. The ladder leaders once again demonstrated why they are the team to beat, combining defensive steel with attacking flair to overwhelm their opponents.

The backline was rock solid in defence, with their intercept marking and ability to read the play nullifying any threat posed by the Grammarians. The midfield won contested ball and drove the team forward with relentless determination. Loren Mills and Alessia Acquaro were in fine form in front of goal, finishing with a bag of four and three goals respectively, that put the result beyond doubt. Sharnie Whiting, Camryn Tyrrell, and Marli Russell were amongst the best on ground for the match.

Westbourne Grammarians fought valiantly, with players like Kiara Henry, Joudy Joud, and Jade Desira working tirelessly throughout the match. However, they found it difficult to penetrate Williamstown’s disciplined defensive structure and struggled to convert their forward entries into goals.

This win not only keeps Williamstown CYMS’ perfect season intact but also sends a clear message to the rest of the competition: they are the benchmark, and it will take something special to stop their march toward the premiership.

Fitzroy produced a near-flawless performance to dismantle Old Xaverians 11.13 (79) – 0.1 (1) in a lopsided contest that highlighted the stark contrast between the two sides.

From the first bounce, Fitzroy asserted their dominance, controlling the game with clean ball use and relentless pressure. Stephanie Demeo and Jaime Nelson were at the heart of everything, dominating contests and setting up numerous scoring opportunities. Their backline was equally impressive, providing plenty of drive off half-back and shutting down any forward thrusts from Old Xaverians.

Up forward, the Fitzroy attack was firing on all cylinders. With a spread of goalkickers, the home side was able to maintain consistent scoreboard pressure throughout the match. Nadia Conte had a field day, kicking four and getting best on ground. In contrast, Old Xaverians struggled to find their footing, managing just a solitary point for the entire game in the second quarter. Their forwards were starved of opportunities, and when they did get the ball inside 50, Fitzroy’s defence quickly snuffed out any potential threat.

With the conclusion of the regular season, the VAFA Prem B Women’s ladder has solidified, setting the stage for an exciting finals series. Williamstown CYMS finished on top with a flawless record, accumulating 64 points and establishing themselves as the team to beat. Old Geelong secured second place with 52 points, displaying consistent form throughout the season. Fitzroy, with 44 points, took third, while St Bedes/Mentone Tigers clinched the final spot in the top four with 36 points. These teams will go through to the finals in the coming weeks.

Despite their efforts, Beaumaris (24 points), Westbourne Grammarians (20 points), Aquinas OC (16 points), and Old Xaverians (12 points) missed out on finals action, ending their campaigns with a focus on rebuilding for next year.

The finals promise to deliver high-stakes action as the top four teams battle for the premiership. Williamstown will go for a clean sweep, but with all the pressure of being minor premiers, will they be knocked off their throne? Stranger things have happened in finals footy.

Four big wins see percentages continue to rise

The results this round have many implications with the top three remaining locked on thirteen wins each, as the Vultures sit two games behind - they look to make a late run for the top two.

Round 15 saw some massive wins recorded across Premier C, with the one exception being the most anticipated match-up of the weekend, which saw 5th placed Mazenod defeated by 4th placed Parkdale Vultures by eight points.

The Vultures got off to a hot start in a six-goal first term that saw them lead by 16-points at quarter-time. Both sides essentially matched each other on the scoreboard for the next two quarters as Parkdale went into the final quarter with a 26-point lead.

It was clear that both sides were hungry for the contest and whoever could keep pushing for one more quarter would come out on top. Ultimately, despite the best efforts of Mazenod who had a terrific last quarter with four goals to one, the Vultures held on for victory.

Mazenod’s Hayden Boyce had a terrific day out with six goals spread across the afternoon. As for the victorious Parkdale, Mitch Brown continued his stellar season with four (taking his total to 70), as Nathan Sullivan and Darcy Brown were among the best.

Despite a disappointing season with just the two wins prior to this game, Marcellin were back to their best with a massive 91-point victory over Oakleigh. The Krushers had improved in recent weeks but were silenced by a tough Marcellin opposition who dominated the game from start to finish.

The scoreboard said it all in the first half as Marcellin kicked eight goals to Oakleigh’s one, thanks to Jack Pekin and James Miller who dominated up forward.

Oakleigh’s intent was rewarded more frequently in the third quarter as they matched Marcellin for goals and got the ball moving around the ground with more ease, however Marcellin came storming home in the final term to win comfortably.

Old Carey defeated Glen Eira/Old McKinnon by 81 points to reinforce their credentials as a serious contender come finals time. Whilst Old Carey would’ve been favourites going into this game, the large winning margin is impressive given the Gryphons success in their first season in Premier C.

After starting with five consecutive behinds, the home side fixed their kicking and got some goals back on the board to lead by 18 points at quarter time, building on that momentum to work that lead up to 45 points at the main break.

The story was much the same in the second half as Old Carey continued to get the footy through the big sticks and dominate on the scoreboard. Jed Rule, Mitch Wooffindin and Trent Warren combined for 11 in a classy display.

AJAX recorded a comprehensive 107-point victory over the Monash Blues. Largely, AJAX have been very consistent across the season, and this only continued on the weekend in what marked the third time this season they’ve defeated a side by 100+ points.

AJAX set the tone early, kicking the first eight goals of the afternoon, and only improved throughout the first half to lead by 68 points at half-time.

Whilst Monash got more of a look in during the second half and converted some opportunities to goals, AJAX were too far ahead and claimed the four points with ease, 133-26.

Amongst the best players for AJAX was Corey Zielinski with an impressive five goals. Despite the loss, Fraser Bennett, Alex Bennett and Charles King stood up for the Blues, each making an impact on the game.

The Hampton Rovers continued their good run of form with a 71-point victory away to PEGS. The early stages of the game were tightly fought as both sides kept each other accountable, hence the Rovers only had a narrow 3-point lead at quarter time.

Something had to change for the Rovers otherwise PEGS would find ways to limit their scoring, and indeed a response was delivered as the Rovers kicked a further five goals in the second quarter and kept PEGS goal-less in the third quarter.

A 62-point lead at three-quarter time was too large a deficit for PEGS to work down as Hampton claimed the victory, remaining in touch with the top-two.

Business continues in Round 16 as the top four sides, particularly, are searching for big wins to boost their percentage and push for an all-important top-two finish.

Glen Eira/Old McKinnon host the Parkdale Vultures in what should be an interesting game. Parkdale comprehensively won by 173 points when these sides last met in Round 1, but the Gryphons have grown a lot since then and demonstrated their potential for the future.

Marcellin host the Hampton Rovers with both sides coming off big wins this week. Marcellin will be looking for a win to stay clear of the bottom two relegation positions. Whilst the Rovers are looking to boost their percentage to break into the top two.

PEGS play the Monash Blues with both teams looking to redeem themselves after their losses. Looking at the ladder, PEGS go in as favourites, but the Blues will be up for the challenge and ready to make an impact.

Elsewhere, Mazenod host AJAX, whilst bottom of the ladder Oakleigh face off against top of the ladder Old Carey.

300 games for North Brunswick great

Adrian “Sippa” Sipala reached an incredible milestone of 300 games on the weekend. The North Brunswick great achieved Premiership glory with the Bulls in 2023 and has spent time as a player and coach at the club throughout his football career. Congratulations Sippa on this well-deserved milestone!

Old Camberwell legacy reaches 300 games

Club legend Matt Cottrell has joined Jordan Heffernan as the second player in Old Camberwell Grammarians’ Club history to achieve the 300 games played milestone.

‘Cotters’, the son of Tim Cottrell, past player and current club official, along with brother Brett has maintained a strong family connection with the Club over many seasons. A Reserves XV111 Best & Fairest winner in 2004, 2010, 2011 & 2012 and a member of the Reserves Grand Final teams of 2006 and 2007, Matt was awarded Club Life Membership in 2012 for services to the Club over many seasons.

With a neat sidestep, always making him extremely difficult to tackle, Matt still patrols the midfield with great authority and as they often say … the Mailman Always Delivers!! Well done, Matt, a great achievement for you and your family, we all look forward to seeing you achieve the next milestone –Club Games Record Holder.

TAC Round Safety Round

This year’s TAC Round was a huge success, with 53 clubs actively participating to promote the Transport Accident Commission’s (TAC) important message on speeding. The clubs showed their commitment by wearing TAC armbands, displaying TAC posters in social rooms, and engaging in social media promotions.

The TAC Club Rewards Program, a significant funding opportunity for the clubs, was also highlighted during the round. By effectively promoting the TAC message across various platforms, clubs have the chance to receive up to $10,000 in funding. The TAC Round not only raised awareness about the dangers of speeding but also provides vital support to local footy clubs through this program.

Mazenod great to hang up the boots

Mazenod club legend Rob Mann has announced his retirement at season’s end after an incredible journey that began as scoreboard operator as a Year 8 student in 2003, then club water-boy in 2004 before pulling on the boots himself after graduating from Mazenod College at the end of 2007.

Family has been a constant theme throughout Rob’s 241-game career with the Nodders. “My brother Steve is four years older, so I first got involved with the club when he started playing,” Rob recalls. “The club means everything to me. I feel like it’s given me more than I’ve given it, even though I’ve given it everything I have. It’s like a second family to me.”

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

Ava Menard (UHS-VU)

Women’s Rising Star Nominee

The VAFA congratulates Ava Menard from UHS-VU, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 15. In her first year of senior footy, Ava has not missed a match and has been named among the best afield on twelve out of a possible sixteen occasions.

What the club said:

Ava is playing her first season at UHS-VU having come across from our associated junior club, Flemington Juniors. She’s played football her whole life, firstly at West Footscray Juniors before moving to Flemington to be in their first girls’ team. This led to her being selected for the WRFL’s U15 Interleague team and being selected in the Western Jets Futures Squad in 2019/20.

Playing in defence, Ava is a calm, composed figure both on and off the field, and seemingly phased by nothing. She is a popular member of the team, for her work rate and dry sense of humour. Her tendency to rock up to morning matches still in her pyjamas is always a delight. She’s regarded as being one of the best kicks in the team, in both her accuracy and penetration.

Coach, Alex Henry, said: “I had the pleasure of coaching Ava in the U18s last year as well, and have been able to watch her develop as a player in that time. She has learned to believe in herself, and what she can do, and it has resulted in her dominating in matches. She’s made the transition from juniors to seniors look easy, and we are all massively excited to see what she’s capable of going forward. We’re incredibly proud of Ava and are thrilled to see her talent and hard work rewarded with this recognition.”

Men’s Rising Star Nominee

Josh Walker (Collegians)

The VAFA congratulates Josh Walker from Collegians who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 15. Josh has not missed a beat this season playing every match. He has scored a total of 17 goals and had a breakout performance in the Lions’ win over Uni Blues on the weekend where he was featured in the best for the sixth time.

What the club said:

We were thrilled to land Josh Walker in the off season. Josh was a Collegians boy, excelling in junior footy and playing well at NAB league level. He is a well-rounded sportsman, also being a star junior batsman in cricket.

Josh’s improvement throughout the year has been profound. He is very competitive, and also possesses a high level of class and skill that compliments his hardness.

He started out as a wing/forward but has now progressed into an on-ball role. He’ll still go forward at times, and regularly hits the scoreboard.

Josh has a very exciting future ahead of him, and we look forward to seeing his continual growth.

Two big blowouts almost lock the race for the top four

As the top four get prepared for a huge final series, teams are striving to be in good form at the right time of the year. Parkside and Prahran continue to go from strength to strength winning convincingly at home.

Prahran have won ten on the bounce and certainly flexed their muscles against Old Peninsula winning by 101 points. It was an electric start from Prahran kicking the first six goals of the game as their efficiency inside 50 was a highlight.

Midfielder Joey Bell was superb for the men in blue and the transition from end-to-end was hard for the Pirates to defend. Bailey Payze brought up the Pirates’ first in the second term, but Prahran’s midfield proved too strong. Clinton Angove stood up in the absence of Rory Brodie and Shaun Chapman in the ruck showing the top sides great depth.

Meanwhile, it was much of the same in the second half as Prahran welcomed back Jesse Waters who kicked a great long-range goal when Taylor Bamford kicked one from the boundary, they could do no wrong. The Pirates were looking for pride in the last term and credit to players like Rob Bambery and Jake Lovett who provided great pressure around the ball, but Prahran were too good.

Parkside had a commanding 99-point win over West Brunswick at Pitcher Park. It was an arm wrestle in the first term, as both sides had turns to lock the ball in their forward half. The Devils brought up the first two majors, thanks to Luciano Logozzo and Ciaran Cotter as Brock Ward got the first for the Magpies. The 16-point margin in favour of the Devils was blown up in the second term.

Rick Frost’s side kicked seven goals in a row keeping the Magpies scoreless and Corey Mckay showed his ability to be a goal-kicking midfielder with four of his own. Devils midfielders continued to get on the scoreboard including Benedict Douglas with three and two from Max Doyle. A game clear in third position the Devils go to and are looking dangerous.

The Preston Bullants responded from last week defeating the Old Yarra Cobras by 38 points. Luke Green had a big presence from the moment the ball was bounced for the Preston Bullants with great ruckwork.

Tom Hill’s side kicked the first five goals of the match with Old Yarra unable to capitalise on opportunities until they brought up their first midway in the second term. Stefan Ganci proved a tough matchup for Old Yarra, being explosive around the stoppages as they kicked away.

When the Preston Bullants are playing their brand of footy, they can take it up to the best which is why it’s been a frustrating season for them. Old Yarra fought hard in the last term outscoring their opposition, but it wasn’t enough.

Therry Penola brought the heat and caused a huge upset against UHS-VU. First half was a tight battle between the two midfields – Esubalew Ramsay showed plenty around the stoppages for the Vultures and Therry Penola’s Matthew Lyons had plenty of it. At half time it was all tied up with Therry Penola wanting to finish the season off well. Jarrod Egglestone was dangerous up forward for Therry Penola who ended up with four goals for the game.

Second half saw Therry Penola’s pressure go to another level; Blake McKinnon provided great run off the half-back resulting in his teammates having good looks inside 50. An inexperienced Vultures defence were under siege as a five-to-one goal third quarter gave Therry Penola a fourgoal lead at three-quarter time.

After a poor performance in round 14 against the Pirates, Therry Penola knew they needed to continue to be brave in the last term and got a much-deserved four points.

Ormond proved why they are one of the flag contenders this season, responding to an early scare from Kew to win by 32 points. The Bears had another strong start kicking five goals to one in the first term- Max Waters and William Llewelyn looked threatening and got on the scoreboard early.

Second term saw the Monders respond profusely, elevating their forward half pressure by Ethan Hanley and Aaron Taylor. Territory was owned by the Monders forward half as they kicked six goals straight, keeping the Bears to just two inside 50s for the quarter.

Bryan Cole’s Bears lifted in the second half but the rapid ball movement from Rhys Kennedy and Harrison Burt made it tough for the Bears defence.

Round 17 sees a potential finals matchup with Parkside travelling over to E.E Gunn Reserve to take on the Monders. Last time they met it was a two-point thriller going in favour of the Devils and it certainly will be another cracker.

Therry Penola has a huge challenge against Prahran this weekend. If Therry Penola brings the intensity of the past fortnight there could be another upset brewing.

Old Peninsula will be looking to respond against the Old Yarra Cobras this week. Old Yarra forward Anthony Raso continues to have a strong season kicking 27 goals in 13 appearances.

West Brunswick are at home against UHS-VU in what is an intriguing contest. The Vultures would want to get some momentum coming into finals as they get some players back.

The Preston Bullants found some form last week as they take on the Bears. With two games left, both sides will have one eye on the next season and could introduce some reserve players.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S

Week one of Finals locked in as massive clash looms

It had been looming for weeks now, but it is officially locked in that Old Brighton and Marcellin will go headto-head in a massive week one finals clash down at Elsternwick Park on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams go into the final off the back of commanding wins this week, with Old Brighton defeating Old Melburnians by 73 points and Marcellin defeating Old Haileybury by 61 points.

The final four are confirmed and despite a slip in the back end of the season and not recording a win since Round 8, Collegians claim fourth spot and will feature in the first round of finals. Old Melburnians and Old Haileybury unlucky to miss out in a six-team comp, with some standout performances in 2024.

After showing such strong form in the final rounds of the season, Old Melburnians were dished a reality check by the form team of the competition as they were held to two goals for the entire game. Comparatively, Old Brighton put on a kicking masterclass with 14.5 for the game, scoring a minimum of three goals each quarter.

It was another commanding display from Lily and Jasmine Tait, with Lily Tait a clear best on ground with four goals. This takes her tally for the year to a massive 40 goals, with a career tally of 65 and her eleventh appearance in the best players.

Lucy Grant was also a massive influence, kicking five goals of her own in a career best game, whilst Lucy Mitchell had two goals.

Whilst it is season over for Old Melburnians, they will have some key takeaways as they head into the off season off the back of an impressive last four weeks. Old Brighton will be full of confidence heading into the game against Marcellin and whilst they narrowly lost to them in Round 15, expect this game to be a thriller.

Across town, Marcellin also registered another impressive win over now wooden-spooners Old Haileybury. Whilst they kicked 13 goals for the game, there was eight behinds registered as well. Pretty accurate, but if they are to defeat Old Brighton on the weekend it is something they’ll have to improve on in the coming days.

Zoe Glascott once again kicked multiple goals, adding another three to her tally to finish the home and away season with 56 goals and claim the Division 1 Women’s leading goal kicker. It’s going to be a great watch to see her and Lily Tait in action on Saturday: a certified goalfest. It’s been an impressive season for Glascott, kicking almost double last year’s goal tally and is guaranteed a spot in that Team of the Year forward pocket.

Captain Alana Pane had a big game, leading from the front with three goals. Great to see the captain in strong form heading into next week’s big game.

Unfortunately for Old Haileybury it is season over and they will look to work on their game plan across the off season ready to return in 2025.

Marcellin will be confident but wary heading into Saturday’s match up as they beat Old Brighton just last weekend and look to defend their flag.

The final game on Saturday eventuated to be a finals preview: Collegians vs Parkdale Vultures, and it is safe to say Collegians have a lot of work to do before they come up against Parkdale again on Saturday.

Collegians have not registered a win since Round 8 and have been held goalless for the entire game three times across that period, including on Saturday. Collegians actually finish the home and away season with a lower percentage than Old Melburnians and Old Haileybury and had Melburnians won on the weekend, Collegians would be out of the finals.

Parkdale bounced back from a tough loss to Old Melburnians, kicking 14.14. It was a massive second quarter, with 6.2 after starting the game off with 1.6. That sort of game style could see them progress to the preliminary finals.

Sienna Symons was the difference, kicking a huge bag of eight goals to be clear best on ground. It was also her first time kicking multiple goals since Round 11 as she marks a return to form at the perfect time. Lucy Burgess and Isabella Daddo were also impressive.

Parkdale will be confident as they play Collegians again on Saturday, vying for a place in the preliminary final, whilst Collegians will have to snap out of their form slump quickly if they are to pose any threat to the premiership cup.

Bullants and Friars upset the status quo to secure 4 points

A week of surprising wins and shocking losses in Round 16 of the Division 2 Men’s competition. The battle for the final three spots is heating up with a few teams still in the running.

South Melbourne Districts triumphed over the ninthplaced Wattle Park by 17 points. This is the second time this year the Bloods have got the better of the Animals. Leading from the outset and carrying momentum through the four quarters, the Bloods recorded a final score of 9.7 (61) to Wattle Park’s 6.8 (44).

The Animals struggled to hit the scoreboard early but kept the pressure on the Bloods. South Melbourne thrived on home soil with 5 goals in the first half coming from the likes of Jamie Brooker, Leigh Sfetkidis, and Zaron Smith.

After a slow start, the Animals found their groove in the second half applying some scoreboard pressure, but South Melbourne’s attacking prowess and successful disposals kept them in the lead, as they continued to dominate the game.

The Animals put up a good fight in the fourth quarter, kicking 3.3 to the Blood’s 2.2, but it wasn’t enough to overcome South Melbourne’s lead.

Jamie Brooker’s outstanding hat trick helped the Bloods outplay the Animals. With this crucial win, South Melbourne has solidified its fourth-place position, but it needs to keep the momentum going by winning the next two games to secure its spot in the top four.

Brunswick was dealt their second loss of the season in an absolute thrashing by the in-form Whitefriars at Whitefriars College, suffering an 81-point loss.

The flag hopefuls looked a shell of the side they have been throughout the season, unable to apply pressure of get the game on their terms, succumbing to a final scoreline of 15.21 (111) to 4.6 (30).

Whitefriars have put together a string of classy performances and are peaking just at the right time, imposing themselves as a team to watch come finals. To their credit they have fought tooth and nail to claw their way up the ladder and now sit in second, just ahead of Elsternwick on percentage.

Having taken down the top-dogs they will head down the home straight with an air of confidence. Inaccuracy in front of goal is likely one area the Friars will look to sharpen with the potential for their rampage on the weekend to have produced a much greater win had any of their 21 behinds gone through the big sticks.

Despite this setback being Brunswick’s second-season loss, they are still leading the ladder. Brunswick, known for their relentless pressure from the get-go, couldn’t match Whitefriars’ intensity that day. It was a one-sided game, and the Friars secured a magnificent victory.

The Nobs opted for a different lineup, resting their star players for the critical upcoming games. Nicholas Garratt was on fire, kicking 6 goals for the Friars, while Sam Kieseker supported him with 5 goals and dominated the game.

In another upset, the tenth-placed Bulleen Templestowe pulled off a thrilling 9-point victory over MHSOB at Ted Ajani Reserve in a nail-biting contest.

MHSOB were strong out of the gates and set the pace for much of the match, leading at every change. However, the Bullants stayed within striking distance, trailing by just a couple of goals.

Bulleen Templestowe’s Corey Shiels kicked a goal early in the fourth quarter to close the margin to just 7 points. This goal applied pressure, leading to a forced turnover and ultimately securing the Bullants’ victory in the game.

Corey Shiels, Ashwyn Mohandas, and Jack Cowell each scored two goals for the Bullants, contributing to a magnificent team effort that secured them the victory. Despite MHSOB’s Will Hellier booting 3 goals, his team fell short in the end.

St Mary’s Salesian’s struggles in the competition persisted as they endured a 17-point loss to Hawthorn at Ferndale Park. St Mary’s final score was 15.12 (102), and Hawthorn’s was 17.17 (119) in a high scoring shootout.

The first two quarters were pretty even, with both teams showing suitable disposal and conversion rates, however, the defensive structures could have improved on both sides.

The Saints bolstered a 4-point buffer at half time into a 17-point advantage after an impressive third quarter. But it was not enough, as Hawthorn dominated the final quarter, scoring an impressive 8.5 and shattering St Mary’s hopes.

Hawthorn’s Jack Kenny was the player of the match, finishing with 7 goals for his team. Lachlan Russell from St Mary’s gave his everything and booted 4 goals. Hawthorn has retained its fifth position on the ladder from last week.

In another match that saw goals-aplenty and resulted in a combined double-century Elsternwick defeated Aquinas, 20.14 (134) to 15.11 (101).

Even at Elsternwick Park, the first two quarters were fairly balanced, as both sides thrived against each other. After the halftime siren, the Wickers had a slight edge, leading by 6 points.

Elsternwick took control in the third to build a healthy margin of 26 points heading into the final quarter. They were able to thwart the pressure Aquinas had mounted and produced an attacking brand of football that paid dividends.

In the fourth quarter, the Wickers maintained their lead and stayed focused on their passing game, securing a hardearned victory. Elsternwick’s Vice-Captain, Spencer Hankin, was undoubtedly one of the best, kicking a season-high 8 goals for the game. Jamie Mount contributed 5 of his own.

The following two weeks will decide every team’s fate and finalise a crop of finals contenders. Round 17 kicks off at the Gillion Oval, where Brunswick will challenge MHSOB. Aquinas will host South Melbourne Districts, and over at Rathmines Road Reserve, Hawthorn will challenge Whitefriars. Wattle Park will face St Mary’s Salesian at Bennettswood Reserve, while Bullen Templestowe will host Elsternwick.

DIVISION 2 WOMEN’S

Oakleigh upset flag hopefuls in a last roll of the dice

After sixteen rounds gone the results are in and we are locked and loaded for the Division 2 Women’s finals series. What a season it has been with some notable thrashings and the always-exciting upsets, the final four have fought their way to the top to make their case for the premiership.

The top four of Glen Eira/Old McKinnon, Whitefriars, Power House, and Hampton Rovers have been masterful throughout the season, losing just 13 matches between them. Oakleigh are the ones unlucky to miss out on a finals berth in 2024, finishing just two points behind third and fourth. They showed plenty of promise with a late surge and will be one to watch in 2025.

Oakleigh had one last roll of the dice on the weekend, taking on the formidable Power House. Breaking into the top 4 was logistically feasible should the Krushers come away with a win, whilst also needing Whitefriars to lose their final game. Oakleigh got the job done by a mere 2 points, and at Power House’s fortress no-less.

The first half was dictated by the home side with the early ascendency. Catherine Bartholomew got her side into the game with 2 goals, alongside a stellar performance from Sinead Doorley.

The Krushers’ season looked all but done then and there when a couple of late goals in the third brought them within striking distance, trailing by 4 points at the final change.

With a finals spot on the line, Oakleigh had everything to play for and boy did it show through a gritty defensive effort in the dying minutes, as well as a match-winning goal from Emily Heverin. Although the win did little for their percentage, Oakleigh revelled in those all-important 4 points, defeating a giant of the competition and in fine fashion.

A concurrent match up over at Whitefriars College would be a deciding factor on who rounded out the top 4. Understanding the stakes, Whitefriars delivered one of their most comprehensive performances, shutting down their opponent in Hawthorn to secure a 52-point victory.

Whitefriars had plenty of the Sherrin, playing their signature possession style footy that proved to suit the

likes of Hayley Notting who kicked a career-high 4 goals: storming home to an 8.15 (63) finish. Should they sharpen their foot skill in front of the big sticks they could prove unstoppable in their face to the flag.

The Hawks had a tough day at the office with their only goal coming in the fourth quarter off the boot of Jamie Hewitt, while Emily Scott stood tall for her side.

The Whitefriars leapt into second spot, which not only secures them a standing for finals, but rewards them the double chance. Alas, this result cements the conclusion of Oakleigh’s season who finish in fifth.

Hampton Rovers will miss out on the second chance and will head into an Elimination Final next weekend after falling to the minor premiers in Glen Eira/Old McKinnon in Round 16.

Glen Eira/Old McKinnon play textbook footy and are one of the best at remaining calm under pressure. A quick start from the Rovers didn’t seem to rattle the ladder leaders, converting a 5-point deficit into a 9-point advantage after the main break.

The final term was a tussle for the chocolates with a conversion of 2.1 from the Rovers to just 5 behinds from the Gryphons, who walked away with a 3-point win. Both sides had multiple single goal kickers in an exhibition of talent across the board.

Glen Eira have delivered the dream run this season dropping just the one game and will go into finals series as favourites in the Div 2 Women’s competition.

Over at Kevin Bartlett Reserve, Old Trinity were back on the park after a couple of forfeits coming up against Richmond Central. The Snakes came out firing with the intent to finish their season off strong, following a string of consecutive losses, successfully downing the T’s 9.10 (64) to 0.1 (1).

The football only seemed to travel one direction, and that was the way of the Snakes who held a 10-point lead at the first change, extending that buffer at every point thereafter.

Elizabeth Simkin and Ann-Marie Geary were standouts in their final match of the season for Richmond Central, while

Susan Miller

the skipper Mia Hyde-Smith, finished the day with 2 goals alongside Jordyn Toms-Wedge who also slotted 2 majors.

The amalgamated squad of Old Camberwell/AJAX were certainly put through their paces this season, facing some fierce competition whilst learning to come together as a single unit playing on new home grounds with new teammates. They took every challenge in their stride and threw everything they had into their final match up against Mazenod.

In a low scoring affair, any score was a crucial leap ahead. Mazenod took the reins kicking 1.3 to half time, holding the home side scoreless.

With a 14-1 lead half way through the final term, the result seemed all but locked away, and Mazenod pumped the breaks. Old Camberwell/AJAX saw their opening and went full throttle, booting 2.1 in the dying minutes of their season to get themselves within a single point.

One of those crucial goals came off the boot of Old Camberwell/AJAX defender Justine Gabriel in the final game of her career.

At the final siren, Mazenod retained that 1-point advantage to secure another win and finish their season in ninth.

The stage is set for the first week of finals with four powerhouses of Women’s football facing off in the race to the flag. Hampton Rovers will come up against Power House in an elimination final in a must win clash that will see the winner progress through to the Preliminary finals.

Meanwhile the minor premiers, Glen Eira/Old McKinnon will do battle against a red-hot Whitefriars in what could be an exciting clash. The winner will secure a ticket to the big dance while the loser of this semi will get a second chance the following week in the Prelim. Plenty of great footy still to come to close out what has been another great season of Women’s football.

DIVISION 3 MEN’S

Eley Park stun Swinburne in upset of the season

Eley Park have dashed Swinburne University’s finals hopes in an all-time upset, recording their third win of the season.

The Sharks were down 15 at quarter-time, but a season-best second quarter of six goals and five behinds rewarded Eley Park with a 14-point halftime lead. The Razorbacks came out a fiercely determined outfit in the third quarter, reclaiming the lead momentarily, as a steadying shot from Jesiah Mcgarvie put Eley Park back in front.

Sharks backmen Jonathan Tennent and Jake Weaver quelled any Razorback attack in the last quarter, the Sharks holding a 10-point lead by the final siren.

“[It was] another superb team effort by the boys. We stuck to our plan and structures to win the match in a 20 goal turnaround from earlier in the season,” Eley Park coach Matt Embling said, referencing the Sharks previous 109-point loss to Swinburne in Round 5. It’s the second time the Sharks have won after a triple-figure loss to an opponent this season, the other against La Trobe in Round 13.

“We will take this renewed belief into the challenge of playing North Brunswick,” Embling said.

Tennent and Weaver earned best-on-ground nominations with Stephen Roberts for the Sharks, whilst Nick Ferguson was Swinburne’s best with a five-goal haul for the match.

The loss is a damaging blow for Swinburne’s finals chances. The Razorbacks now sit two games and percentage outside the top-five, with games against top-four sides Canterbury and Power House to come. To make finals, Swinburne will need to pull off two major upsets and hope Richmond Central go winless in Rounds 17 and 18.

In a high-scoring, see-sawing affair, St John’s have recorded a thrilling five-point win over Canterbury.

Inaccuracy limited St John’s initially, scoring 5.10 (40) at halftime to lead by just four points against the Cobras’ 5.6 (36). Canterbury fired early on in the third quarter, scoring three goals in five minutes, before St John’s tussled the game back on their terms. It wasn’t enough to overcome the early strikes however, Canterbury heading into threequarter-time with a nine-point advantage.

That lead extended to 20 points 13 minutes into the final term, seemingly leaving St John’s dead and buried. Yet, in an extraordinary turn of events, the JOCs came roaring back to life. Kicking the last five goals of the game, St John’s snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, Canterbury failing to find a sealing goal from their four final scores.

Matthew Carnelley (5) and Harvey Emery (3) combined for eight goals for St John’s, as Joshua Mourant earned best-on votes. Michael Wheeler and Darby Desmond were deemed best-on for Canterbury.

Power House has bounced back from their Round 15 loss with a cruisy 73-point win over Box Hill North. The Demons never let up all game, however Power House’s talent was too much to overcome. Power House leapt out to a seven-goal halftime lead, and continued on into the third quarter, reaching a 74-point margin. Box Hill North fought doggedly to outscore PHAFC in the last term, albeit it can also be attributed to an inaccurate 1.8 from Power House.

Following the result, Power House jump Canterbury into third place, whilst Box Hill North slip below Eley Park to tenth on the Division 3 ladder.

Power House’s Luke Stubbs staked his claim for a Team of the Year spot with another bag of goals, punting seven for the match. Kyle Hocking and Toby Love were amongst the best for Box Hill North.

A gritty performance from La Trobe University has fallen short as Richmond Central all but secure their spot in the finals. The Snakes kicked inaccurately in the first half, scoring 2.9 (21) to La Trobe’s 3.5 (23). The scoring woes continued into the second half, however Richmond Central

were persistent in attack. Eventually the wall of La Trobe defence crumbled, with the Snakes scoring 57 second-half points to La Trobe’s 27.

Nicholas Simons, Lachlan Webb and Sam Benetti-Baker played defiantly for the Trobers, as Charles Spring and Damien Holland earnt BOG votes for the Snakes. Richmond Central take on Albert Park in Round 17, with a win guaranteeing a place in September.

North Brunswick have recaptured intimidating form with a 95-point victory over Albert Park. The Bulls were at their defensive best, limiting the Falcons to just six scoring shots for the entire match, whilst ten players chipped in on an 18goal performance.

Tom Shembrey was scintillating, booting five, whilst Zac Dicianni was also a prominent component of North Brunswick’s win. Unless the Bulls throw away wins to Eley Park and Richmond Central, they are now locked in for a top-two ladder position come season’s end.

With Round 16 wrapped up, attention turns to the penultimate Round of Division 3 football.

Eley Park host North Brunswick, whilst La Trobe travel to face Power House. Swinburne will be eyeing a boilover against a potentially-fatigued Canterbury, who come off their heartbreaking loss to St John’s. Albert Park host Richmond Central, and Chadstone return from the bye, needing to beat Box Hill North to avoid the wooden spoon. St John’s take the bye this week.

HOLMESGLEN U19’S REPORT

SBMT survive scare to remain in the race, while St Kevin’s shine

As the sun slowly begins to poke its head through the clouds in the early-August sky, it can only mean one thing for the suburbs of Melbourne: finals football nears.

Whilst some teams are safely secure in the upper standings of the ladder, it is the teams that reside below that are scrambling to secure the opportunity to play deeper into the season.

Round 16 of the Holmesglen Under 19 Premier Men’s competition showcased a plethora of defining matches over the weekend. Most notably, St Bedes/Mentone narrowly downed rivals University Blues to claim victory, but more importantly, consolidate themselves within the top five.

The win would never be a simple one for either side, a fifth placed Tigers facing a third placed Blues, with both sides yet to stamp their finals ticket in 2024.

Initially, it was evident that the Tigers were best suited to the pressure of the occasion. Leading by 36-points at the final break, SBMT looked certain to cruise to a third-straight win.

However, it was the navy blues who would come from the clouds to give them an almighty scare. Having just kicked a single goal in three quarters, Uni Blues seemed to procure a solution to the Tiger dominance.

Down forward, Luca Di Lallo and Sam Litras proved to be worrisome for the Tiger defence in the dying stages, whilst Lachie Francis and William Furphy lifted as well.

A six-goal last quarter would bring the Blues within just three points of their opposition, however it was all too much too late, as the siren would sound to leave them short-changed.

A season-defining victory would be awarded to St Bedes/Mentone. The side have now nestled themselves into fifth position on the ladder and look to carry their form into the final stages of the season. Ethan Hall, Ollie Etienne and Owen Bater were named best afield in the win. Over at Brighton beach oval, Old Brighton continue to stamp their authority on the competition, trumping Williamstown CYMS to win by 60-points.

Oliver Goodger was the story of the day, the young Brighton forward ending his day with five goals.

He wasn’t alone in the resounding win, Thomas Marriott and Oscar Newstead also proving to be a headache for opposition players and coaches.

The win has tethered Old Brighton to the top of the ladder, the side shooting away in the late stages of the year, currently sitting two games clear.

Jack Wheeler, Andreas Martinez and Levi Cossey shone for Williamstown as they continue to search for their fourth win in 2024.

In other results, Old Scotch powered past Caulfield Grammarians to win by 57-points.

Another team requiring victory to remain in the top five, Old Scotch performed strongly at Glen Huntly Park. It was a first quarter performance that would stun Caulfield, the Old Scotch boys kicking six

goals to none. Such dominance would persist throughout the duration of the contest, as they would run away 57-point winners.

Aiden Johnson kicked four goals, whilst Henry Kemp would finish his day with three. Lachie Harker, Finn Nankervis and Sammy Vidor were other names that performed for Old Scotch.

Jake O’Halloran and James McInerney were strong in the loss for Caulfield.

Looking on, perhaps the most shocking result of the round came when S t Kevin’s put the red-hot De La Salle to the sword, winning by 96-points.

In what was a dangerous game for St Kevin’s, the pressure appeared to be heaped onto their shoulders. De La Salle, unable to make finals in 2024, have astoundingly been the most in-form team in the competition in recent weeks, and have been making a habit of upsetting contending teams.

It was in the first quarter of the contest, when it became evidently clear that St Kevin’s were committed to the cause: they kicked six goals to one, De La Salle’s late season-resurgence put on pause.

Elliot Mahoney was the major threat down forward, kicking five. Zane Greenham and Conor Lynch were also prolific as their side ran away with the game.

And finally, in one of the more lopsided results in 2024, Old Xaverians thumped Beaumaris, to win by 124 points.

Another team required to notch up wins to stay in the hunt for finals football, Old Xaverians played in such a manner that suggested their season was on the line.

It was a second-half whitewash that saw them kick 15 goals, stunning the Sharks and reaching the final siren as convincing victors.

Charlie Christopher and Oliver Britton-Jones ended their day with four, headlining a long list of goalkickers. Aaron Ivak and Alby Hewitt were named best afield.

Looking forwards, the Premier Under 19’s season holds just two more rounds for the year. Not too dissimilar from the proceedings over in the Paris Olympics, there will be a mad dash to the finish line for all participants.

Round 17 again holds more exhilarating contests, ones that will deliver the finals-football excitement early for fans.

In the match of the round, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers will face Old Xaverians, the winner almost certain to finish in the top five and a chance to make finals, whilst the loser will most likely kiss their season goodbye. What’s more, is that the contest has earned its rightful place under Friday night lights. What a spectacle!

Moving further into the weekend, Old Brighton will face Old Scotch in a top of the table clash. This is a potential preview of the 2024 Grand Final, both teams stacked with talent.

Williamstown CYMS will face Caulfield Grammarians, two teams desperate for a win. De La Salle will look to regain form against University Blues, whilst St Kevin’s will play the struggling Beaumaris to close out the penultimate weekend of the home and away season.

Shae Raywood (Hampton Rovers)

50

Shae Raywood will play her 50th women’s game for Hampton Rovers in the semifinal this weekend. ShaeRay is a much-loved team leader at the rovers whose toughness on the footy field contrast her gentle and caring personality. 50

Allanah Ryan (South Melbourne Districts)

Finally giving in to years of workplace encouragement, Allanah joined the Bloods during the Covid era of 2020/2021 and made immediate impact - winning Best First Year Player that season. If you watch Allanah play, you will notice how effortless she makes it look. She is a naturally talented footballer and is incredibly versatile. Congratulations on a fantastic 50 games Allanah. We can’t wait for the next 50!

Alec Elkington (South Melbourne Districts)

50

A quiet achiever, many of you may not have known Alec played at South Melbourne, unless you checked the best players each week. Elite by foot, Elk has claimed that he’s been practicing shanking it off the side of his boot to add an element to his game that the opposition won’t expect. He has kicked some of the best goals seen on Lindsay Hassett. If you thought Pendles 400 was good, it was simply a curtain raiser for what is sure to be an unmissable milestone. 50

Jack White (South Melbourne Districts)

Joel Ludik (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon)

Congratulations to Joel Ludik on playing 100 games. Joel was the leading goal kicker (5th in the competition) and member of 2018 U19s Premiership team playing as a key forward. Fast forward to 2023 and he was a key member of the back 6 with the occasion pinch-hit forward in the 2023 Senior Men’s Division 1 Premiership team. A vibrant and popular character on and off the field at Packer Park, we look forward to Joel playing plenty of terrific football as we need his qualities to be a Premier football force over the coming years.

Jack “Whitey” White’s introduction to senior footy wasn’t anything out of the ordinary for a ressies footballer; 3 goals from his first 3 kicks in the first 3 minutes in his debut against Swinburne. Jacks played a mixture of 1s, 2s, and 3s during his time at the club and on his day can be as impactful as any. With his drive through the guts, as the connector, trying to ride blokes’ shoulders or lasering balls inside 50 to leading forwards (if not in range to launch it). Well done on 50 games with The Bloods! 100

Peter Gleadhill (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon)

200

One of the most loved characters on and off the field at Old Haileybury over the past 14 years. Peter graduated from the school in 2009 and joined OH in 2010 and has been a key part of the senior team since. Peter has been a 3-time B&F winner, 3-time premiership player and multiple footy trip attendee. Peter is loyal, funny and selfless and loved by all his teammates.
