A reminder to all supporters that the Masters Grand Final will be live-streamed on News Ltd’s KommunityTV in what is a first for the VAFA.

You’re never too old to lace up the boots and play

• Thirds Division 2: Collegians, having come from third spot on the ladder at the end of the home and away season, claimed the Premiership with a massive 74 point thumping of Williamstown CYMS at Trevor Barker Oval.

• Thirds Division 4: Ivanhoe who finished fourth at the end of the home and away season, upset minor premiers Old Brighton by a comfortable 28 points

Ideally, we would like to grow the number of teams in this competition for next season, and we encourage any Clubs or players considering playing next season to get down to Elsternwick Park this Sunday and see the enjoyment these men continue to gain from the game (and the aftermatch!).

As part of that process, we recently sent a survey to all Clubs, requesting responses to a series of questions aimed at capturing views about the current competition and ideas for the future. I encourage all Clubs to share the survey amongst their committees, coaches, players and volunteers before submitting responses. In addition, we will also garner information from our players and coach representatives through various football advisory groups. We want the next Strategic Plan to be one that all Club’s take ownership in, so Club feedback is essential to that Inprocess.themeantime,

• Premier Thirds: Old Melburnians, despite having half as many scoring shots and being 13 pts down at three quarter time, got up to win by 5pts in extra time over Old Xaverians.

I hope everyone continues to Enjoy the Footy! We want to ensure that everyone is on the journey together in making the VAFA the bestitcompetitioncanbe.

Speaking of the future, I have mentioned in a number of forums our intention to develop a multi-year Strategic Plan for the VAFA competition, with input from all our stakeholders. We want to ensure that everyone is on the journey together in making the VAFA the best competition it can be.

Crowds continued to come out in force last weekend as another series of VAFA finals were contested in earnest. Six Premiership games were run and won on the weekend, this time in the Men’s Thirds competitions:

Thirds Division 1: Old Xaverians, having only lost one game for the year, dominated the grand final against Old Trinity and, despite poor kicking ran out winners by 23 points

• Thirds Division 5: At Coburg City Oval, it was the Raiders from Old Paradians who took home the silverware with a 15 point victory over Parkside. This weekend we look forward to the Mecwacare Masters Grand Final between the two top teams for the year, De La Salle and Oakleigh, to be played at VAFA headquarters on Sunday. The success of the historic Masters Festival at Elsternwick Park showcased the competition and provided compelling evidence of the adage that for many players, you’re never too old to lace the boots up and play.

1 The Amateur Footballer The Journal of the Victorian Amateur Football Association August 27, 2022 I Vol 21 No. 19 EDITORIAL

• Thirds Division 3: Mazenod had 13 more scoring shots but still only overcame the CY’s fourth senior team by 13 points

On the field, Sam Grimley is expected to return after a fortnight away through injury. Last time they met he found his way to four goals. At the other end, Xavier Richards was a late withdrawal, this time around, Marty Gleeson will be ready to stand him. Ayce Cordy will face Tom Hart in the ruck. The battle of the small forwards will excite the fans, Jack Hewitt & Charlie MacIsaac for Xav’s. Tom Quinn and Mark James for the Blues.

Saturday afternoon will determine the finishing order of Old Brighton and Old Melburnians. For both sides, it’s a simple equation - Win, and you’re in. Lose, and it’s all over in 2022. Only a drawn game at Brighton Beach Oval, and an Old Xaverians loss to University Blues will see them both play against each other again next week in the first semi-final. But, I’ve never seen a team play for a draw before.

If you can’t get there, you can tune into RSN Carnival for full coverage of the Match of the Day from 1:00pm. A fuse has been lit at Old Xaverians, since the double bye they’re five wins, one loss (by 3 points to Collegians). Kicked 100+ twice in that run. Held St Bernard’s to two goals, and in the half played against Old Trinity, a solitary point.

All roads lead to Brighton Beach Oval

There’s only one theme Caulfield Grammarians must go into their final game against Old Scotch with. “Win it for Punchy” Earlier this week, Simon Williams announced that he will finish up as coach of the Fields after this weekend.

Access team lists on GameDay via the VAFA website or the GameDay App on your mobile device.

While Old Scotch may use the theme of losing that 2019 B-Grade Grand Final and getting some form of redemption. It will matter little given it was so long ago. However, it was the last time a Grand Final was played. Mark Gnatt has encouraged, implored, supported his group all year, he backs them in every week and got incredible results. They’ve claimed the scalps of Old Brighton twice, University Blues twice, and pushed St Kevin’s, Old Xaverians, Old Melburnians and Collegians.

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S Joe Pignataro THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 2

With history on their side, reputation through the roof, the Xav’s aura. They’re the one side no team wants to face in September. University Blues could dispel all that if they’re to go to Toorak Park this weekend and finish the year they’d rather forget with a win. They’ll be playing for the inaugural Carmody Cup. Named in honour of the contribution the Carmody family have made to both clubs, and specifically in honour of Dan Carmody who passed away in 2020. The Carmody family is close to a lot of people connected with both of these proud clubs and it will be a powerful day on Saturday when the presentation takes place.

‘Punchy’ took the reins of Caulfield in 2016. He coached them to the 2019 B-Grade Premiership, giving the club their first A-Grade win for over 30 years, which set them on a seven game winning streak through 2021. He goes out with a winning record of 70% and will forever be regarded as a great of their football club.

Old Melburnians experienced the worst of footy last weekend with significant injuries, and an early onslaught on the scoreboard. Nick De Steiger, the mainstay in the ruck, sadly suffered a broken leg. Gus Borthwick’s day ended just before half-time, Jonno Grimwade just before three quarter time and Tom Baker late in the piece.

There’s hope in the OM’s camp for Borthwick, Grimwade and Baker to be right for this contest. Given the VFL home and away season has concluded, there’s potential for Sam Dunell, Tom Cameron, Brodie Tonkin to play for OM’s. While at Old Brighton, Will and Oscar Lewis, Darby Hipwell, Sam Collins could be in contention. It’s been 20 years since Old Melburnians have featured in William Buck Premier finals. After coming up from B-Grade in 2017, Old Brighton were part of the 2018 finals series. After BBO being a fortress, the Tonners have lost three of the past four matches at home leaving them vulnerable. They’ve been inside the top four all year until the conclusion of last weekend, it would be heartbreak for them to miss out on finals action.

For all the twists and turns we’ve seen this season. The shape of the William Buck Premier finals series all comes down to this weekend.

He has the blueprint for success. 2023 is the opening of the window to break into the top echelon. Will Edwards, Sam Dorevitch, Will Barker, Jared Risol, Isaac Morrisby. These guys are proud Caulfield players and will want to send off their coach in the best possible way. While it hasn’t come together for the Fields this season, it could well come together for ‘one last dance’ in front of the Fields faithful. Old Trinity will head to Premier B in 2023. Along with St Bernard’s. Both sides have got one last box to tick in 2022. Old Trinity welcomes Collegians (second) to the Daley Oval. St Bernard’s hosts St Kevins (first) at the Snakepit. The small amount of bias in me would love to see the Snowdogs come off the ground with a final round win. However, the St Kevin’s team is an absolute powerhouse.

Led by Anthony Lynch, a man who knows every piece of VAFA history there is to know about heading into finals, top ranked sides against bottom ranked sides. They are a system based side that’s absolutely humming. For all the talk off the defence that’s conceding 51 points per game. The last three weeks, they’re scoring 113 points per game. The previous two weeks have read 16.15.111 def. 5.4.34 (Caulfield and Old Brighton). It’s been a battle for St Bernard’s to score all year. And, it could get ugly if St Kevin’s gets hold of them. Collegians have no room to slip up. They will play finals. That’s locked in. They’re not locked in for second spot. There are permutations around that. The only thing they can control is themselves, and the outcome of this game. So, Jared Rivers will implore his side to do what they’ve done for the last nine weeks - Win.

PREMIER B MEN’S Eliza Wright THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 4

Beaumaris prevailed over St Bedes/Mentone down at Brindisi Oval. Despite the Sharks leading on the scoreboard, this game was far from one-sided. Beaumaris found themselves with a 16-point lead in the opening term as Connor Murphy and Sam Gibbins got to work in Beauys forward half. Riley Mihailovic also running hard around the ground to keep Beaumaris in front. St Bedes/Mentone took advantage of the wind in the second quarter with Kai Stretton putting on a show for his home crowd alongside Darcy Fountain helping the Tigers to decrease this margin to 11 Determinationpoints. from SBMT was not enough as Beaumaris had all the answers in the second quarter. Damien Johns and James Taylor read the play beautifully and took advantage of their possession as the Sharks walk away with 4 more points to their name. Next week 2nd plays 4th as Beaumaris take on Fitzroy meanwhile St Bedes Mentone will play AJAX. The Tigers are yet to beat the Jackers this year, with AJAX prevailing by 16 points in round 8, will St Bedes/Mentone finish the game on a high note and settle the scores? With both teams on 24 points, safe to say we have a tight battle on our hands. De La Salle found themselves in another close game, in their encounter with Williamstown. With lots on the line and an axe to grind, a tough first quarter saw both teams struggle to grasp this game in their favour, resulting in a one-point margin falling the way of De La in the first quarter. Hugh Nicholson played his role through the middle with his agility and 2 handy goals for the day.

A heated battle between the Roys and the Panthers saw Fitzroy defeat Old Carey by 72 points. In Old Carey’s last game for the season, the Panthers kept the first quarter close, trailing by 2 points heading into the second term. Luca Anderson and Lachlan Senior continued to fight hard for Old Carey as the Roys forced their way to a halftime lead of 33 points. A fantastic game from Jack Wotherspoon who was hard at every contest, providing momentum through Fitzory’s midfield while Max Ellis kept the Roy’s backline locked down. The Panthers couldn’t catch the Roy’s with a final score of 7.6-48 to Old Carey and 18.12-120 to Fitzroy. Finishing off the year with the bye round Old Carey can take some critical learnings from this season into the track, looking for a successful 2023 in Premier C. Round 18 will test The Roys as they come up against Beaumaris. Yet to defeat the Sharks this season, next week is as good a time as any to overcome Beauy.

The second quarter saw Williamstown hit the lead as Harrison Carter and Robert Chan managed to gain clean possession of the footy and work the ball forward. CY kept the third quarter on their terms, despite best efforts from Thomas Deane-Johns, Jack Walker continued his reign down forward. The final quarter saw De La leave nothing on the ground. Trent Shannon and his three goals certainly helped De La’s case as did their composure and grit around stoppages. No doubt a crucial win for De La as they hold onto the win by 8 points. with only one game left to determine the home and away season only time will tell their September plans. They’ll have their work cut out for them in round 18 as they will come up against the Uni Blacks. As for Williamtown, they will play out one last battle against Old Haileybury.

One Game and One Percent separate De La From Fitzroy

Finals footy is just around the corner as teams work hard to finish off the year strong. Eight seemed to be a lucky number for Beaumaris and De La Salle this week as the Sharks held onto their lead over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers by 8 points as did De La Salle in their clash against Williamstown. The Roys hold onto their top spot, triumphing over Old Carey while Old Haileybury record yet another well-fought victory over AJAX.

Access team lists on GameDay via the VAFA website or the GameDay App on your mobile device.

AJAX couldn’t overcome Old Haileybury this week, going down to the Bloods by 70 points. Old Haileybury had the fall of the ball in the first quarter, hitting the lead by 19 points. In the second term, it was all tied up both sides at a stalemate of 48-points. Toby Lipton played a pivitol role down back for the Jackers, denying Old Haileybury of any easy goals. A Jack Lonie masterclass saw Old Haileybury run away with the lead in the second half. This week it was Brede Seccull taking control in front of goal with 3 goals to his name and a spot among the best.

Despite only one game left, next week will play a huge role in the upcoming finals as De La knock on the door of Fitzroy, trailing by 4 points and 1%. Both coming up against top sides in round 18, next week will be an interesting one. Can either side cause an upset to lock themselves a place in the top four? A loss from both sides will see Fitzory hold onto 4th while a victory from De La might see them charge ahead.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 6 PREMIER C MEN’S Hugh MacLean Access team lists on GameDay via the VAFA website or the GameDay App on your mobile device. Premier C continues to power on through 2022. This coming weekend marks round 21 of the season, with a fortnight to go Monash Blues have locked away top spot. Hampton Rovers, despite having a faulty fortnight can’t move from second spot, while the intrigue for third and fourth remains high on everyone’s mind. Old Geelong (third) will face Mazenod (fourth) this weekend, which may give us a clearer understanding as to who will be wearing the dark shorts in the first semi-final in three weeks’ time. While for the loser, Old Ivanhoe are snapping at their heels and ready to leapfrog themselves back into the top four. After going through a five game losing streak, Old Ivanhoe’s recent month has been significantly stronger, displaying form they showed through the opening months of the season. A loss to Monash on the weekend put a dent in the momentum but they’re certainly getting back to their best. They’ll just be hoping they haven’t left their run a little too late. With winnable games against Old Mentonians and Preston Bullants to come, the boys of Chelsworth Park have to tick both of those boxes and hope results fall in their favour if they want to see September action.

UHS-VU have had a terrific few years climbing up the divisions to get to Premier C. Unfortunately, along with Preston Bullants, they’ll be going back to Division 1 in 2023. However, they’ll feel comfortable at this level. They’ve been very competitive right throughout the marathon season and would be confident at Brens Oval with new recruits in the club, and another off-season under the belts. The Bullants have found the going tough in Premier C. On the weekend, Mazenod sank their ship early with an 11 goal opening half. Followed by 12 goals in the second half. An 11% boost catapulted them into the top four and Marcellin’s upset win over Old Geelong has meant this weekend is as tantalising as it gets when the Nodders meet the OG’s.

You have absolutely got to hand it to the Parkdale Vultures. Starting the season 0-6 they go into this weekend with a 9-9 record coming up against the Preston Bullants. They have a chance to have a positive win-loss record (10-9) for the first time since Round 11, 2016 when they sat 6-5 on the Premier B ladder. You have to go back to 2014 for the last time this club won 10 games in a home and away season.

The Monders come up against Monash this weekend, the toughest task in Premier C. Earlier this season they were held to one goal against them. They’ll be hellbent on rectifying that this Saturday.

Monash Blues are probably tired of the VAFA Podcast boys mentioning the fact they have a “good footy program” at the University. But, it’s been proven this season, they are on a 13 game winning streak. Have one home and away game remaining then having a week off before the finals campaign. Mac Cameron, Beau Harris, Daniel Easson, Nick Argento and Nick Darling have taken it all before them, regularly featuring in the best. While the latter (Darling) has slotted 60 goals for the season, he will take some stopping this finals series.

On the weekend they produced a boilover, knocking off the second placed Hampton Rovers. While a surprise to many, not inside the Vultures camp as Owen Lalor orchestrated the great demise of his former side. The Rovers can’t move from second spot on the table, but there are some question marks over the side. The past fortnight has been very un-Hampton. UHS-VU and Old Geelong remain in the final fortnight, can they get themselves right before the finals kicks into gear.

Get set, get ready, the fight for third is on

Danny Corp, Christian Carnovale, Ben Marron, Joel Meljnak, Jacob and Ned Gray are all big game players. Thriving when faced with adversity.

Ormond had to grind through the opening half against UHS-VU over the weekend before exploding in the third quarter with an eight goal blitz. Followed up by another half dozen in the final quarter to come away winners by 68 points. Harrison Burt (4) and Matt Oaten (4) the main men up forward who caused the most havoc, while Tom Buckley had a scoreless day in front of goal still found his way amongst the best players.

“It was late in the second quarter; it was 10 goals to none, and I said to Cookey (assistant coach Tim Cooke) – has there ever been a grand final where a team hasn’t scored a goal?” De La would hold off the Old Scotch onslaught and hang on to win that Premiership by 5 points. Congratulations on a wonderful achievement Bernie!

“I know what you’re all thinking, why has it taken this long” De La Salle’s Bernie Dunn was inducted as a legend in the club’s Hall of Fame last weekend. Over 100 people were in the room to celebrate and recognise the achievements of Bernie. Bernie joined De La in 1971 and made every post a winner. That included the 1991 A-Grade title. A title Bernie has told VAFA Media in recent times, he may have got ahead of himself. “I went from being the best coach in the comp at half time to the worst coach in the comp by the end of the game,” he joked.

This weekend’s game between Old Xaverians and University Blues will be the inaugural Carmody Cup clash. The Carmody Cup is named in honour of the contribution the Carmody family have made to both Old Xaverians and University Blues, and specifically in honour of Dan Carmody who passed away in 2020.

John Carmody attended Xavier and then went on to Melbourne University and Newman College. He played 88 games for Blues between 1973 and 1978, followed by 93 games for Xavs including two premierships. John’s son Dan also attended Xavier and was school captain in 2004. Following in his father’s footsteps at Newman College and Melbourne University, Dan made his debut with the Blues Under 19s in 2005 and made his senior debut later that year and became a regular senior player over the years. Dan went on to play 116 games with the club and was a key member of the 2008 Reserves premiership and 2012 Thirds team. The Carmody Cup will be played once a year between the two clubs.

All did a great job in trying conditions at Trevor Barker Oval. Kew defeated the Saints to advance to the Grand Final, while for the Saints, that’ll get a second chance against Caulfield this Sunday.

Pre season 2022 and as a club we knew we had something pretty special, a quiet young man off the field but a competitive beast on it. Luke is as good a ball hunter as anyone we have seen, his contest work for a young player is exceptional. Lukes teammates absolutely love him and love playing with him, arguably the most consistent player across the season so far, this award is thoroughly deserved.

The VAFA congratulates Luke Winter from St Kevins who has been nominated as the weekends Rising Star. Luke has been regularly featuring in the best players for St Kevins throughout 2022. He will be a feature of this years William Buck Premier finals series.

What the club said: After finishing at the college in 2019, Luke like everyone played no footy in 2020, he then had a significant injury in the pre season of 2021 which meant he missed most of the season, he did however make his Senior debut just before the season was canceled.

Can Kew chase down PEGS this weekend?

In what was the upset of the round, Therry Penola claimed a big last round win against Glen Eira to finish off their year on a high. Both teams were goalless at quarter time with the afternoon playing in favour of an even contest. A 10-point lead at three quarter time to Glen Eira simply wasn’t enough with Therry Penola just hanging on to win by three points. Therry Penola’s Kane O’Halloran was their presence up forward as he booted three goals and was one of the best on the ground. He was also assisted by Matt Lyons who impressed and ultimately led them to victory.

Prahran Assumption travelled out to Whitefriars College for their final game of the season to take on the battling Whitefriars. An inaccurate Whitefriars weren’t able to withstand the pressure of Prahran Assumption after they kicked four first quarter goals in what was a quick start. Unfortunately for Whitefriars they will have to head down to Division 2 in 2023 after winning only three games for the season. Along with St Mary’s Salesian they will be relegated but it will also give both sides a chance to regroup and find some continuity. For Prahran Assumption, they finish their year with a with a win but still on a disappointing note after finishing fifth and missing out on finals. Despite this, they’ve had some strong individual performances with Matt Clifford kicking 57 goals this year.

The ladder has been set in stone with finals to look forward to over the next three weeks in Division One. PEGS have finished off their magnificent season with a win to the tune of 70 points over Oakleigh. With the minor premiership all but locked away coming into the final round, PEGS were well placed to register another win making it 16 wins for the year. Riley Simmons has hit some great form at the right time of the year as he kicked six goals along with 10 other individual goal kickers for PEGS on the weekend.

Meanwhile Kew and Old Camberwell Grammarians faced each other in round 18 only to be confronted by a draw. With the scores locked together at 48 points apiece, neither side walked away with a full four points but nonetheless they will each play off in September with a chance a claiming the division one premiership.

The final game of the home and away season for division one saw St Mary’s host Old Peninsula at Ferndale Park. Old Peninsula managed to kick 20 goals for the game with veteran club legend Shaun Payze adding four goals to his name while fellow teammate Nelson Forrest kicked five goals. Old Peninsula have managed to escape the relegation zone with four wins for the year as they finished on a positive knowing they’ll return to division one next season. So, what do finals look like?

PEGS 3.0

Like all final’s series, the first week will be an intriguing contest. Minor premiers PEGS will head to Piranha Park and meet Kew in the first final with the loser guaranteed a second life in the preliminary final the following weekend. Kew and PEGS have been the best two sides all year clearly, but finals deliver different complexities. Recent form line would suggest that PEGS will win this game. After playing each other twice throughout the year in rounds three and thirteen it was PEGS who came out on top with both wins by more than 30-points and the last five rounds has seen them peak with impressive form. The second final of the weekend at Trevor Barker Oval may have the potential to be slightly closer. Glen Eira have been an exciting side all year, but Old Camberwell have stuck with them and have put together some strong performances. Playing off against each other twice, it was Glen Eira who won their first encounter by 39 points however, Old Camberwell claimed a win in the most recent battle in round 14 by 10 points. The winner will progress onto week two of the finals while it will be season over for the loser. It’s a tough game to split and I’m predicting a game that will head right down to the final minutes.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 16 DIVISION 2 MEN’S

Brunswick started the year in a blaze of glory, coming down from Division 1 and making every post a winner. Perhaps there was a bit of a slowing through the winter grind but they’ve come out the other side in red hot form. Having won five games from their last six matches, the weekend may have been the most complete performance for them. Holding Manningham scoreless for the day and having 37 scoring shots themselves. Tom Wilson (6) holds the key for NOBS, 51 goals for the season. Old Paradians in previous match ups have held him to one goal in each match. If Brunswick are to advance in finals, he needs more than one look at the sticks.

For Ivanhoe AFC, West Brunswick, Old Paradians and Brunswick, the next chapter of the season starts this BeforeSaturday.we look ahead, looking back on the weekend. It was West Brunswick who kept the winning streak going. Since the heartbreak of an after the siren loss to Brunswick in Round 7 they have gone on an 11 game winning streak and come into this week full of confidence. On Saturday, after quarter time, the Magpies dismantled Old Paradians. 12 goals to four from the first change signalled their intent to the rest of the competition. Luke Buckler (3) has kicked 10 goals from his past four outings and is in red hot form in front of the sticks. Josh Elston has featured in the best on five of the last six matches. Three weeks ago they got a taste of Ivanhoe AFC, beating them by 33 points on that occasion. This weekend, for a spot in the Grand Final it will be a different looking Hoers that they come up against, but they are certainly the best placed side to compete with the ladder leaders. Old Paradians will have to win the title from fourth if they’re to be successful. Going into the weekend they were a slim chance of taking second spot of the Magpies but I’m sure deep down knew they would be facing Brunswick this weekend regardless of the result. In the sides most recent clash it was the green, blue and purple monster winning a heartstopper against NOBS. Will history repeat itself this weekend? For the winner, a spot in the Preliminary Final awaits.

Aquinas maintained a gap on Yarra Old Grammarians throughout the afternoon and finished their year off with a 23 point win. Josh Robertson (3) and Josh Clinton (3) were focal points in the forward line while for the Bushrangers Michael Scott (3) finished the year with 30 goals next to his name at an average of three goals a game. Like Ben Circosta at Power House, he’s been a significant recruit for Yarra and will feature highly in the clubs best and fairest count.

Manningham Cobras have had a long year and will next year compete in Division 3. A big off-season coming, a couple of new fresh recruits and the wheel can turn quickly in their favour. The same can be said for Power House who haven’t stopped trying all season long. After being level with MHSOB at quarter time, the Unicorns broke away after quarter time to win by 30 points. As we have said many times throughout this year, and confirmed on Saturday night, Ben Circosta has claimed the clubs best and fairest player for 2022. Due credit to him for fronting up every week and putting in strong performances. MHSOB have fallen short of playing finals, they’ve finished the year in fifth spot and will see some opportunities throughout the year as missed ones. The Unicorns are a proud football club and will be eager to avenge for missing out on the top four in 2023.

Both of these sides have fronted up every week and Yarra Old Grammarians have avoided relegation winning one more game than both Manningham and Power House, will therefore be part of the Division 2 make up in The2023.ladder leaders and minor premiers, Ivanhoe AFC didn’t have it all their own way against Bulleen Templestowe. Had it not been for inaccuracy in front of goal the Ants may have stolen this game from the Hoers. Both sides finished the day with 18 scoring shots apiece. Ivanhoe AFC, 10 points ahead at the final siren. Billy Drake (3) has taken out the Division 2 sharpshooters award with 59 goals for the season, beating his coach, Ash Close (2) by a solitary goal. Jordan Andonovski has had a stellar season and could feature prominently when the seasons votes are counted in a few weeks time. For Bulleen Templestowe, a year of rebuilding doesn’t leave them at all disgraced. Winning six matches and being competitive in many others, they’re on the right track to move up the ladder in 2023. Looking ahead to this weekend, a spot in the Grand Final awaits Ivanhoe AFC and West Brunswick. The two sets of Magpies will clash, which one harnesses the spirit of the AFL Magpies side? South Melbourne Districts have dismantled Canterbury by 31 points at Lindsay Hassett Oval to seal top spot on the ladder and be the minor premiers of Division 3 Men’s. The battle between first and second was every bit the arm-wrestle it should have been, at least for the first half, until the Bloods showed their class and expanded their two-point main-break lead to 37 by the start of the final term. Three goals each were kicked in the last quarter to keep the buffer alive for the home side. George Dixon (3) took top honours for South Melbourne Districts but Oliver Dufficy kicked five to be at the top of divisional goalkickers tally. For the Cobras, Jordan Dear (2) was the only multiple goalscorer, but James Boarotto, Cameron Marshall and Ryan Murray all got on the board, as did Nick Szabo, who topped the best players list.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 18 DIVISION 3 MEN’S

Bloods and Wickers have made promotion look easy

Sheridan Harris Access team lists on GameDay via the VAFA website or the GameDay App on your mobile device. Division 3 Men’s finished their home and away season off in style, with the ladder unusually summing up the year in a way that only the footy gods could have made happen. The top four makes it clear the cream well and truly rose to the top, but to have the bottom four, bar the Westbourne Grammarians whose season absolutely did not go to plan, separated by only percentage surely has to be rare.

The battle for fifth was waged, and Emmaus St Leo’s came out on top, after a tough contest against Hawthorn, to jump from eighth position and avoid any chance of relegation, while Elsternwick’s win over North Brunswick saw them seal second spot. With top two on the line, Elsternwick ended their home and away campaign as 77-point winners against North Brunswick at Holmes Todd Oval. Both teams were rueing missed opportunities early, but the Wickers kept their noses in front just, taking a lead of 16 points into the main break, before breaking the game open. The Bulls were unable to stem the tide as the home side kicked nine unanswered goals for the half, limiting their opponents to just three behinds. Andrew Ramzy and Archie Bissinella were the only goalscorers for North Brunswick, as Kali took top honours for the final time this year. For Elsternwick, as has been the way, Matt Ball (5) and Daniel did what they do best in front of goal, while Matt Harvey was best-on.

One of the best rivalries in Division 3 Men’s boiled down to an 11-point win to Emmaus St Leo’s over Hawthorn at Rathmines Road Reserve, giving the former both bragging rights and fifth position on the ladder. The Hawks were out the blocks early as the Animals failed to register a major, before the away side came out firing in the second term to kick six goals and take a 6-point lead into the main break. The battle continued much the same way for the rest of the game, with Hawthorn whittling away the buffer but unable to get the lead back, ultimately falling short. Zac Kearns (4) was instrumental for Emmaus St Leo’s to be best on ground, as was Matt Hill (2), but all eyes were on club stalwart Chris Beluszar who kicked one goal in his final ever game. For the home side, William Meehan (3) and Darcy Johnston (2) kept them in, as did Xavier Bryham who took top honours.

A season to forget for the Westbourne Grammarians has ended with a 164-point loss to Parkside at Westbourne Grammar. The game itself went much like the Warriors’ season as the Red Devils jumped out of the gates to kick five goals in the first term, before piling on seven more in the second quarter to take a 68-point lead into the main break. With the game arguably already dead and buried, the away side kept peppering away at the goals, kicking a further fifteen majors to be able to ride the wave well into finals.

Trevor Barker Oval is the destination for our first game of Division 3 Men’s finals for 2022 on Saturday, with South Melbourne Districts and Elsternwick deservedly taking both first and second on the ladder, after what has been an incredible season for both teams. This time last year, they were getting ready to battle it out in the Division 4 Men’s finals, but they’ve been the cream of the crop after being elevated, and will no doubt produce a worthy spectacle. Sunday will see Canterbury take on Parkside at Piranha Park in Coburg. The Red Devils clearly peaked at the right time to pinch the coveted fourth spot on the ladder, but the Cobras have been one of the most consistent teams all year and it is no shock they finished third given their form. Before the 2021 season got cancelled, Parkside were preparing for finals, while Canterbury were rueing missed opportunities. With both teams at their best, they’re tough to beat.

The Razorbacks were the ones that ran out winners by 54 points which will give them confidence come the first week of finals.

Marcus Lorkin, Thomas Rickard and Joshua Best were amongst the best for the Demons. The best for the Razorbacks included Aidan Vesty, Zachary Lassey and Zachary Cooke. Joshua Best kicked 2 majors for the Demons with other goal kickers including Beau Parthenides and Eugene Charles who both kicked a goal. Aidan Vesty had 5 majors for the Razorbacks and other goal kickers included Zachary Cooke (2) and Harrison Bernardo (2). Box Hill North will now look to recruit well over the offseason and take another shot at the premiership in 2023. Swinburne’s season continues and they will face La Trobe in a qualifying final. Despite both Albert Park and Eley Park being out of finals contention, both teams were hungry to end this season with a win. Albert Park got off to the stronger start with a four goal to one first quarter to take a 24-point lead into the first break. The second quarter saw Eley Park begin to find their footing with two goals however the Falcons were able to kick four goals of their own to take a 43-point into halftime.

The third quarter followed a similar story as the Falcons outclassed the Sharks during the third quarter kicking four goals whilst only allowing one goal from the Sharks to take a 67-point lead into the final break.

Following a nail biter clash in the reserves clash between Box Hill North and Swinburne moments prior, viewers were hoping for a close encounter between both senior sides. In the first quarter, we saw a close battle between both sides with both teams kicking three goals each. The second quarter saw the Razorbacks begin to find a groove as they added on another three goals whilst keeping the Demons scoreless for the quarter.

The final quarter saw the Falcons take charge of the match as they were able to add six goals to their tally whilst only allowing two goals from the Sharks. As a result, it was the Falcons that were able to run away with a dominant 93-point victory over Eley Park.

The best for the Falcons included Jack Lee, Jack Twite and Thomas Smith. Eley Park’s best included Shannon Blewitt, Terrence Dingeldei and Andrew Yeo. Jack Lee was massive in front of goal for the Falcons with 8 majors. Other goal kickers include Sam Lee, Jack Twite and Brett Tottenham who all kicked 2 goals. Kristian Dinas had two majors for the Sharks. Individual goal scorers included Stephen Roberts and Alex Devlin.

Razorbacks begin their hunt for glory as Falcons end season on a high

Leading by 28 coming into the third quarter, it was a see-sawing contest during the third term. The fourth quarter however saw the Razorbacks swing the game completely in their favour kicking six goals whilst only allowing two goals to come from the Demons.

The only sneak peek at finals in this final round was what was set to be an exciting matchup between St Johns and La Trobe. The Trobers got off to a quick start in the first quarter kicking five goals whilst only allowing a pair of goals to come from the JOCs. In the second quarter, La Trobe was able to add another goal to extend their lead to 25 points. However, during the second quarter, a bad injury forced the rest of the game to be cancelled. Despite being up by 25 points, at the time of the stoppage, not enough time had been played so the match was ruled as a draw.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 22 VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!MILESTONES

150 Josh Heron (St Bedes/Mentone Tigers)

100 Willem Van Denderen (Glen Eira) Congratulations Wil on playing 100 VAFA games. The boy with the booming deep voice and raking left foot kick has cemented his spot in the senior team and capped off a brilliant home and away season finishing equal 2nd in the Best & Fairest. A genuine big game player, it’s fitting that Wil’s 100 th game is to be played in this week’s 1st Semi Final. We look forward to you plying your trade on Sunday at Trevor Barker Oval.

The OM’s will be boosted by the milestone of five-time best and fairest winner Thomas Paule, who will play his 200th game for the club on Saturday when OM’s head to Brighton Beach Oval to play Old Brighton. Coach Paul Satterley said Paule’s milestone will lift his players when they on Saturday. “It is a big deal for us and for him. I know his teammates will want to do everything possible to do the right thing by him. It’s a massive occasion, 200 games in this competition, you don’t see it too often.”

200 Thomas Paule (Old Melburnians)

All at the Club congratulate Sammy who played his 100th Game us last week against Beaumaris. A product of our Under 19’s through some tough times where he always remained positive. Since then he has been a consistent player in both the Seniors and Reserves. His tough fearless approach at the football is a great example to all of us, nothing is too hard for Barcs with his “see ball get ball” approach. Always the life of the Party in any Aftermatch or Social Function looking for a Beer and some fun, he is well respected by his peers and we look forward to Sam playing many more games for his beloved Tigers.

Many congratulations to the one and only Josh Heron who has chalked up Game 150 for the Mighty Tigers. Also a product of Under 19s where he was our Captain and an inspiring Leader. Josh then progressed into Senior ranks where in both Seniors and Reserves he has been a dashing Backman. One of Josh’s greatest traits is his pace, he is sometimes running so fast when he bounces the ball that he over runs it and leaves it behind. Josh is our Resident DJ playing his fantastic blend of Music at all Social Functions and is a great Clubman. Hopefully injuries aside many more games to come for this young man.

The only side to beat St Kevin’s during the home and away season knew they had to start well and be up for the contest all afternoon if they were to be in with a shot at the end. And they started well, a see-sawing entertaining opening term that saw Kew take a four point lead into the opening change. The second term on the scoreboard went in favour of the Bears as they extended the lead to 11 points at the main change. In both games Kew have won over St Kevin’s they’ve kept them to 1.2.8 at half-time.

Kew advance to the Big Dance while the Fields live to fight another day St Kevin’s, the minor premiers will have to go the long way around the William Buck Premier Women’s finals campaign if they’re to bring home this year’s title after Kew spoiled their winning streak in the major semi-final.

VAFA WOMEN’S REPORT THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 28

Sarah Cameron added her second goal of the day for SKOB and cut the margin to four points during the third term. All set for a grandstand finish at the final change, with a spot in the Grand Final on the line it was Kew who reigned supreme in the last quarter to come away winners by 8 They’vepoints.earned themselves a week off, and a spot in the big dance. Michaela and Isabelle Harding were enormous for Kew, as they have been all season. Stood up when it counted most whilst Elyce Hay and Bree Doyle were named among the best for St Kevins. Kew will enjoy the week off and head down to Elsternwick Park on Sunday to find who they’ll face in the Grand Final. Will it be Caulfield Grammarians? Or, will they face SKOB for a fourth time this season? Caulfield are into the Preliminary Final after withstanding a spirited Melbourne University Women’s comeback late in the game.

Courtney Gaze-Persson was the hero for the Fields, standing tall in front of goal late in the game. Before we get to that point of the contest, earlier in the day the sides were split by two points at quarter time. Eight points at both half time and three quarter time. It was a frenetic final term as the Mugars got the first goal on the board to cut the deficit to a solitary point before Gaze-Persson delivered the moment. Coming from the famous Gaze family it was almost football’s version of a buzzer beater to send the Fields fans into raptures and through to a Preliminary Final. MUWFC season finishes in the minor semi-final. While they’ll be burning inside that it ends here, they’ve had to build into the season. And will be no doubt looking to go two steps further in 2023. They can be proud as a club for what they’ve achieved this year. The Fields live to fight another day. Their previous encounters this year against St Kevin’s has seen them go down by 14 points and 17 points. The difference in this upcoming contest is the context of the game. There is no tomorrow, St Kevin’s are the raging favourites. But, Caulfield has momentum on their side and a nothing to lose mentality.
