This Sunday will see the William Buck Premier Women’s Grand Final between Kew and St Kevin’s and the Premier Women’s Reserves match featuring West Brunswick and St Kevin’s at Elsternwick Park. Several premierships have already been determined in our various women’s sections and congratulations to Old Scotch and Monash Blues on winning the Premier B and Premier B Reserves flags, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers on winning the two Premier C flags, and to Beaumaris, Hampton Rovers and MCC on being crowned premiers of our three Division Sections.

Indeed, there were in excess of 100 VAFA women’s players on VFLW lists in 2022 which is a testament to the great strides and recognition of the standard of our players. Competitive balance remains a priority when establishing the sections each season and, as such, the first few weeks of the season are used as grading rounds.
At present, many Victorian women and girls don’t get access to the best courts or grounds, or are relegated to lesser facilities, making it difficult for many to participate or reach their best. The Fair Access Policy Roadmap aims to develop a state-wide foundation to improve the access to, and use of, community sports infrastructure for women and girls. The VAFA is looking at including this landmark policy which Sarah Styles, Director of the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation, hopes will ensure community sporting environments are always welcoming, accessible and inclusive for everyone. Certainly these goals are aligned with those of the VAFA.
In partnership with Sport and Recreation Victoria and VicHealth, the Roadmap is being delivered through the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation and aligns with Victoria’s Gender Equality Act 2020. It follows sector-wide consultation and will ensure that women and young girls can fully participate in and enjoy the benefits of community sport, with fair opportunity and access to their local facilities. The Roadmap features three key phases: education, readiness and progress. It is designed for local governments, sport and recreation organisations and other groups which manage publicly owned community sports Excitinginfrastructure.times ahead.
Female Umpires is an area which we need to keep developing so as to encourage women’s participation, be it as field, boundary or goal umpires. We are very keen to promote women’s participation in umpiring and as such, the VAFA is pursuing opportunities to build a stateof-the-art complex at Elsternwick Park specifically for our umpires with female friendly facilities to encourage the recruitment, retention, development and enjoyment of female umpires.
In addition, the VAFA have the BJS Women Umpires Academy which assists in the coaching, support and networking of our Umpires. These sessions aim to assist our female umpires to develop and progress with their fitness, understanding and skills within the VAFA. A number of sessions feature guest speakers and specialised coaching which have been very fruitful with positive outcomes. Thanks to Simon Fanning and his team at BJS and of course to our VAFA GM Umpires Operations, Mr. Stephen Privitera.
From July 2024, all Victorian councils will need to ensure fair access to sporting facilities for people of all genders to be considered eligible to receive infrastructure funding.
George Voyage –VAFA President
I would like to acknowledge the terrific work of our CEO Mr. Jason Reddick, the VAFA administration team including Football & Umpiring GM Mr. Matt Collister and his team and all clubs. And in particular, to acknowledge the contribution of our media team, Cameron Voss, Joe Pignataro, and our women’s reporter, Kristin Sims. The standard of our women’s matches has improved significantly since our inaugural game at Boss James Reserve on Friday 7th April, 2017, between Hampton Rovers and Ormond. Our players are fitter, more skilful and ever developing.
Our key strategic partner in our women’s football programme has been William Buck who have also been great advocates in gender balance and diversity within the VAFA and to Lindsay Holloway and the team, sincere thanks for your ongoing support and acumen. Our women’s competition was launched in 2017 with 40 teams and 1,958 registered players. Our numbers have increased substantially since then with nearly 3,200 players for the 2019 season. The growth was remarkable and the VAFA is the largest women’s Australian Rules football competition in SinceAustralia.2019, the impact of COVID has seen our registration numbers reduce by 11%, however we still had 75 teams participate across 10 sections this year. The Women’s participation is a key platform of our strategic plan and it is the aim for the competition to grow in 2023 to pre-Covid numbers and beyond.

A Celebration of Women’s Footy
Currently there are three females on the VAFA Board. Ex-Bayside City Council Mayor Ms. Felicity Frederico chairs the Governance SubCommittee and is responsible for the new constitution being developed for implementation in the near future in addition to other key categories. Ms. Vicki Durston is part of our Football Sub-Committee and Chairs the Women’s Football Section with Ms. Sarah Delbosc, who has brought current playing and coaching experience input to our planning and strategies for our women’s competitions.
What has Jared Rivers got in his kit bag to break down the St Kevin’s press? Can individual brilliance in finals beat the best implemented system in the VAFA? Does the wide expanses of Elsternwick Park enable the 18man press to be fully on show? We’ll find out at 2:00pm on Saturday. Old Brighton sat inside the top four all season, until the conclusion of Round 17 falling to fifth. Old Xaverians fell out of the top four at the end of Round 14 before jumping back in at the expense of the Tonners going into the final round.
You will also know that St Kevins and Collegians in September has all the hallmarks of a classic. Four times they’ve met across 2017, 2018 and 2019 in finals. St Kevin’s three wins. Collegians one. Three of the four games under seven points at the final margin. In this present day installment, the chapters are locked at one apiece. St Kevin’s took the chocolates in Round 4 by 21 points, which started the Collegians rot of five straight losses. Collegians got the return bout by 30 points. Keeping St Kevins to three goals, and their lowest score for the season. The purple army is on a roll, 10 wins in a row. Dave Mirra is in amazing form. Kenny Ong has gone well and truly above expectations in the midfield. Matt Warren at full back is a human clamp supported by Sam Sofrinidis in the role of Darryl White with the long-sleeves and floating across packs. Sam Hibbins knows this rivalry
Old Brighton got it all right in the final round, a convincing performance against Old Melburnians ended their season as they swapped spots in the four. Old Xaverians were challenged for a half by University Blues before putting the pedal to the metal and sweeping them off the park. From a historical point of view, we have the side that’s never won an A-Grade Premiership in Old Brighton. Against the only side to have won the Premiership from outside the top four since the turn of the century. And, they’ve done so twice.

Starting on Saturday, the ladder leaders and #1 ranked side all year long St Kevins will look to advance to their fourth consecutive William Buck Premier Grand Final. And, if you want to include the 2015 B-Grade Premiership, they’re staring down the barrel of five Grand Finals in the previous six completed seasons.
Fittingly, if you’re a died-in-the-wool Skobba, coming up against Collegians you will know in recent years, that second semi-final matchup has taken you into the Grand Final, and onto the Premiership.
Dare to Dream this September
well. As does Viv Michie. They are two of the six Collegians remaining from the side that were the runners up in Anthony2018.Lynch was the Premiership captain throughout 2017 and 2018. Now he’s striving to be the Premiership coach. He has players like Tom Jok, Conor Ross, Will Coates, Sam Critchley, coupled with youthful exuberance of Luke Winter and Jack Darmody. He has all the ammunition, knowledge and smarts to know what’s required to win this game.
WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER MEN’S Joe Pignataro THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 2
We have got a pulsating weekend of William Buck Premier finals footy. Storylines coming at us left, right and centre. One team is in the middle of a dynasty, another team in a self-titled Premiership drought. There’s a Collingwood style streak with 10 straight wins to get here, while our final side is yet to taste Premiership success in A-Grade.

2016 was the last time the red and black mafia lifted the trophy, that particular year Xav’s finished third before going onto win the flag. Ask the key playmakers at Old Xaverians, first they’ll say it’s a Premiership drought, then they’ll say they’ve done it before, and then they’ll tell you what we’re all thinking ‘you don’t want to play us in September’.

Old Brighton have reached the big dance in William Buck Premier once. Back in 2007, against Old Xaverians. They’ve tasted B-Grade success a handful of times in the recent decade. They’d love nothing more than to still be in the fight come 5:30pm on Sunday night. After 18 rounds, 90 home and away games, we’re down to the final four. Out of necessity, Greg Hutchison flipped magnets around on Saturday. Will Lewis didn’t look at all lost floating across the backline, while his brother Oscar roamed through the midfield and half-forward. I hope they’re encouraged by their most recent performance and that’s where the focus has stayed this week, and not on the recent drubbing Xav’s handed to them in Round 13.

The Premier B Podium has been decided
It’s never too late for our first draw in Prem B with scores all tied up between AJAX and St Bedes/Mentone Tigers this week. The Tigers began the game on their terms, securing themselves a 21-point lead. Michael Barnes and his 2 goals were essential in helping SBMT keep control of the footy, alongside Christopher Mangoni continuing to rally the troops. AJAX found their feet in the second term with Jarryd Ludski’s speed out of the middle helping claw back this margin to 8 points. Bradley Caplan and Kane Nissenbaum worked harmoniously up forward, recording 2 goals each. AJAX continued this momentum in the third quarter, snatching a 2-point lead over the Tigers. A hard-fought effort from SBMT’s Alexander Browne and Kai Stretton kept St Bedes Mentone in the game. With neither team able to get their side over the line, the final score read AJAX 11.9-75 to St Bedes Mentone 10.15-75.
AJAX have been an exciting young team to watch all year with their continual pursuit of growth and team-first mentality evident in their game style. Finishing seventh on the ladder this year, no doubt this side will bounce back even stronger in 2023. St Bedes Mentone have had an up-and-down year with some exciting wins and the sixth spot on the ladder, they are another side that will take their momentum into next year.
It was a bloodbath down at Princes Park this week with Old Haileybury triumphing over Williamstown CYMS. Williamstown kept Old Haileybury close for the first quarter, trailing by 11 points in the opening term. Samuel Callard worked hard around the ground for CY while Aydan Kovach and Patrick Galic saw no signs of wavering down forward, grabbing themselves a goal each and battling hard to shift the momentum. Old Haileybury brought the pressure in the second term with Samuel Loewe and Jack Lonie’s hard work through the forward 50 paying dividends. There was no stopping William Mackay and Nathan Dowsett as the second half saw Old Haileybury run away with the game, with a final margin of 123-points. This game ends the season for Williamstown, seeing them finish eighth on the table with only 3 wins for the year. Another young that side will take some crucial learnings from this year and come back stronger in 2023. On the other side of the coin, Old Haileybury’s determination has landed them in third place, as they look to take on Fitzroy in round one of the finals at Piranha Park. The Bloods have defeated the Roys twice throughout the home and away season with a 56-point victory in round 8 and a 59-point victory in round 16 Old Haileybury have done well over the past few weeks to get their game in order and is heading into this finals series as serious flag favourites.

Last Saturday marked the last game for the Premier B Men’s home and away season, with 5 teams playing their final game for the year. De La went down swinging, losing to The Uni Blacks by 27 points meanwhile Gary Smorgan Oval hosted a draw between AJAX and St Bedes/Mentone. Old Haileybury got to work against Williamstown, overcoming CY by 123 points, and with lots to play for, Fitzroy defeated Beaumaris by 32 points. This sees the final ladder with Fitzroy in fourth, Old Haileybury in third, Beaumaris taking home the silver and the University Blacks awarded the minor premiership. With their finals hopes still alive, De La Salle couldn’t hold onto their lead over the University Blacks. De La started off strong with a 4-point lead as Hugh Nicholson and Liam Jenkins got to work through the middle. The Uni Blacks bounced back quickly as Hugh Curnow and James Sansom did what they do best in front of goal, alongside Nicholas Hey who drove the Blackers to a 10-point lead. A seesawing third quarter saw Brodie Mclaughlin step up with his hard-contested footy and 5 handy goals. However, the engine room in Lachlan Knight stopped De La from stealing the lead. With a final score of 13.11-89 to 9.8-62, the Uni Blacks took home the four points and the minor premiership for the 2022 season. This game sees De La finish fifth on the ladder, with the fight for the cup just outside their reach. De La had an extremely strong finish to the year and built on an already agile and hardworking playing group. Having finished top of the ladder, the Uni Blacks will take on Beaumaris in the first week of finals and will also have the luxury of the double chance. The Blackers are 2/2 against the Sharks, defeating them by 74-points in round 4 and 38-points in round 12.

Banksia reserve set the stage for an extremely tense game against Beaumaris and Fitzroy. The Roys knew De La were hot on their tails, gripping onto their 4th spot. This inspired a strong first quarter from the Roy’s with Donovan Toohey surging the ball out of the middle, nudging the Roys to a 3-point lead. Connor Murphy and Robert Cathcart were among the best for Beauy, working tirelessly to fend off the Roys. Fitzroy were up and about in the third term extending their margin from 2 points at halftime to 29-points. Jack Mckay brought the heat around the ground, wrestling the momentum well and truly in favour of Fitzroy. Despite the best efforts of Sam Gibbins and James Taylor, the undisciplined Sharks let the pressure of the game get to them. A game-sealing goal from Ted Clayton was the nail in the coffin for Beauy going down by 32 points. Beaumaris finished second for the season and look forward to the Uni Blacks at Trevor Barker Oval in the first week of finals. The Sharks are yet to defeat the Blackers, but the double chance might inspire them to risk and roll on Saturday. As for Fitzroy, they will face off against Old Haileybury. While history suggests this game should fall the way of Old Haileybury, Fitzroy have nothing to lose and are hopeful to snatch the 4-points from the Bloods.

The Premier C finals race goes down to the wire
Old Ivanhoe are in the middle of the batch of sides that cannot afford any slip-ups as the season reaches its conclusion. They ticked that box in quite some style as Old Mentonians were given the full tour of Chelsworth Park.
Monash Blues completed a fairly routine victory over Ormond, despite the brown and blues leading the way at the main break after a very solid half of football. A ten-point margin was no more than they deserved, suggesting that a little more luck with the injury stick may have made all the difference to their season. As good teams do though, the Blues steadied after half time, and indeed registered six more goals to only one reply as they did what they had to do with a last-round bye to follow, to hit the finals race in the best shape possible. Monash had an even spread of goal kickers, with Nick Darling and Matthew Davidson the only multiple scorers with two each and Alexander Bennett the best afield. Tom Buckley kicked two for the plucky Ormond, for whom Mason Martinez shone out.

The Panthers kept the Ivanhoe lead to four goals at the half, but the match was won and lost in the third quarter where the home side kicked eight goals to one solitary major from the Mentonians. Old Mentonians rallied to kick five goals to four in the final term, but a 71-point deficit was always going to be too much to haul back and the eleven goal lead gave Old Ivanhoe a handy percentage boost, and no small amount of confidence for the bigger battles to come. Harrison Fraser kicked five goals for Old Mentonians, while Jack Bradley and best-afield Michael Mitris contributed three each. None were better than Lachlan Mirams for Old Mentonians, for whom Darcy Brown kicked three majors. Mazenod took an enormous step towards a finals berth in this pulsating encounter at Como Reserve, but they gave their supporters one almighty scare in the process. Mazenod looked like they would win with a leg in the air having been dominant in the second and third quarters after an even start. The margin was 34 points at the final change, but it could be argued that Mazenod should have been well out of sight. Whilst Old Geelong converted their much fewer opportunities efficiently. Mazenod seemed bent upon kicking themselves out of the match as their 22 scoring shots to eight at this stage indicated. The trend not only continued, but magnified in the final term as Old Geelong came home with a wet sail, kicking five goals for the quarter while Mazenod could only contribute three points. It could be argued that five extra minutes would have seen a very different result, but five minutes weren’t available and the siren sounded with Mazenod still with their noses in front. Jack Caspersz kicked five goals for the victors, for whom Peter Rozanitis was excellent. Will Horsfall did everything within his power to get Old Geelong across the line, as did Chris Hatzis with four goals.
Jordan Wilkes kicked two goals for the hapless Bullants, for whom Lewis Fotheringham and Liam McLeod worked hard, but this is one match that I doubt they will spend a lot of time reviewing.

The picture of the top four in Premier C still has a corner to be painted after the penultimate round, with results in round 21 only serving to muddy the waters. Only Monash Blues and Hampton Rovers are safe, with four teams still in the race for the last two spots. Here’s what took Theplace…Parkdale Vultures needed a big percentage boost to retain any slim finals hopes that they may have held, and didn’t they get one here? It has been a long season for the young Preston Bullants, and as has been the case in several of their matches in the second half of the season, they put up some resistance in the first half, that resistance was completely washed away in a second half that saw 19 Vultures goals to just one reply. Josh Manning and Sam Hart feasted like seagulls on a bag of chips for ten goals each, with other teammates led by Jack Love and Harry Kilfoyle winning all over the ground.

Hampton Rovers took on UHS-VU on a heavy track at Holland Reserve, and whilst the scoreboard suggests that this was one-way traffic the University boys presented the sort of physical challenge that gave Rovers a decent hit-out before the September action. The University were goal-less to half time while Hampton kicked six at the other end, and while UHS-VU were able to put three on the board in the second half Hampton were able to keep the scoreboard rolling enough to give them a convincing victory. The only real problem for the Rovers was the inaccuracy that has plagued them for most of the campaign: whilst it made little difference here it might in two weeks time. Best-on-ground Cameron Morris kicked four goals and debutant Hugo Twigg three for Hampton Rovers. Pat Brookes and Fraser Campbell were best for the University, who had three individual goalkickers.

After nearly 40 years in Amateur football, Barney will retire as a player and coach at the conclusion of season 2022. It has been an extraordinary and unique career that has included multiple premierships as a player and a coach, Big V representative football, and a host of other off-field roles with the six clubs Barney has been involved with. Barney is an Ormond and VAFA legend. He played 255 games for Ormond, including four Premier A premierships – three as Captain (1985, 1987, 1988) – was selected as a Big V player on 11 occasions, and was inducted as a Big V ‘Champion’ in the VAFA Hall of Fame in 2017. He also coached Ormond Seniors for two seasons (2008, 2009), including the Premier C premiership in 2008, and for the past three seasons, Barney has been the Ormond Reserves coach (2020-2022). He will end the season this weekend having coached Ormond in 73 matches, for a club games total of 328. Other clubs Barney has coached include Old Brighton, Hampton Rovers (including the 1998 Premier C premiership), St Bedes/Mentone Tigers (2002 Premier C Grand Final), Beaumaris and Aquinas, and his legacy at all of these clubs is his mentoring of coaching assistants, his passion for amateur football, and enduring friendships made. What a distinguished career, a memorable career, a successful career – he will stop on the total of 692 matches next week, as a VAFA player (255 games) and coach (437 games). On behalf of all Amateur people – not only the ones you had a direct involvement with – congratulations and thank you for an outstanding contribution to Amateur football.

PEGS into Division 1 Grand Final
Daniel McDonald was instrumental for the Gryphons kicking five of their seven goals for the game and earning him a best on ground performance. A 13-point lead however to Old Camberwell at three-quarter time gave them a slight edge and they pulled away to win by 19 points. Camberwell were assisted on the scoreboard by Nicholas Latsas, James Allen, Sam Murphy and Sam Boyce who each kicked two goals. Meanwhile Thomas Oliver was named one of the best for Old Camberwell alongside James Allen in what was a pleasing win for the club.

There was a hint of spring in the air on Saturday as we saw the first of three rounds of finals in division one with all four remaining teams finishing off the home and away season in strong fashion. On Saturday, it was a top two clash as PEGS met with Kew and this was followed by the second semi-final on Sunday with Glen Eira and Old Camberwell. The Melbourne weather Gods certainly provided teams with perfect football weather which meant for an exciting opening finals
Divisionweekend.one juggernaut PEGS stormed away to gain the first spot in the division one grand final after a comprehensive victory over Kew at Piranha Park. PEGS having lost just one game this season again showed their class and reinstated that they’re the team to beat this finals series. Kew, who have been a strong competitor in their own right this season, were quick to start the game as they kicked four goals to one in the first quarter to hold a 16-point margin at the break. Inaccuracy saw PEGS miss in front of goal with four behinds to finish the opening quarter. Kew’s Josh Wise provided stability around the ground with a number of teammates in Matt Sharkey, Regan Smith and Lachlan James all kicking two goals apiece for the game. However, momentum saw PEGS rebound after the quarter time break as they kicked seven goals in the second quarter to Kew’s four behinds. The main break came as a friend for Kew as they tried to wrestle back some momentum and they stuck with PEGS at the third change, trailing by 27. As has been the trend this year however, PEGS broke clear in the last quarter to solidify their dominance with the final margin blowing out to 37 points. The PEGS line-up in front of goal was once again led by Jack Fenner who registered three majors alongside his teammate Thomas Saggio who also finished with three goals. Impressively, PEGS finished with ten individual goal kickers which has been the case for most of the year with a range of forwards and midfielders hitting the scoreboard. Andrew Macdonald hit his straps with a best on ground performance for PEGS with David Bensen also featuring in amongst the best. This win has now given PEGS a week off and more importantly a golden ticket to the grand final in two week’s time. The second semi-final on Sunday saw Old Camberwell Grammarians face off against Glen Eira at Trevor Barker Oval and it was Old Camberwell who ensured they hit the scoreboard early and assumed the lead. Quarter time saw the Wellers with a lead to the tune of 21 points as they kept the Gryphons to just one goal in the opening quarter. It was Glen Eira however, that worked their way back into the game kicking five goals in the second quarter and trailing narrowly by 4 points at half-time.

The win for Old Camberwell will see them take on Kew in the preliminary final on Saturday at Piranha Park which looks to be a fascinating battle for a spot in the grand final. Kew will be licking their wounds from last Saturday’s loss but it’s Camberwell who have their tails up with momentum they can take from their semi-final win into this Saturdays game. It’s all or nothing for both teams on Saturday with one chance to progress to the grand final and whatever happens, it should be another great battle in division one.

While it’s of no surprise that Ivanhoe AFC are through to the Division 2 Grand Final. Brunswick will be stunned that they haven’t advanced past the first week of the finals. The green, purple and blue monster, Old Paradians were up for the fight against Brunswick on Sunday, and Theyprevailed.willface
The Magpies conceded five goals in the opening quarter, the 26 point half time lead was extended to 80 points with the Hoers slamming home 10 goals in the third term to put the game beyond any doubt. Ash Close was enormous with eight goals while Wayne Schultz (2) ran riot through the midfield. Billy Drake also found his way to two goals. They’ve been the team to beat all year and left no one with any doubt on TheSaturday.onlything that will beat Ivanhoe in Division 2 this year is Ivanhoe themselves. However, it is a finals series and anything can happen. Very rarely do things just go to script in the world of footy. This weekend, the Magpies will want goals out of Luke Buckler, and he’ll be keen to respond too after being held goalless on the weekend. Billy Irving didn’t have his usual impact on the game and one thing that’s ominous for the Old Paradians, is West Brunswick don’t drop two games in a row.
Green, blue, purple monster marches on as Hoers flying into the big dance
off against West Brunswick for a spot in the Grand Final. Made to work for the spot, the boys from Garvey Oval started the game boldly, gave up the lead at half time before a barnstorming Premiership quarter had them holding on in the final term by 10 Anthonypoints.
Cafari (2) was the only multiple goalscorer on the day while it was another Anthony. Daminato who was named best afield for the victors. Old Paradians live to fight another day in 2022 and will genuinely see themselves as a threat to the Magpies come Saturday afternoon at Whitefriars College. Brunswick came down from Division One this year, they started the season in a blaze of glory but have fallen at the first hurdle of finals. It’ll be a strong offseason of recruiting and growth for Tommy Hunter, and we’re sure NOBS will fire in 2023. West Brunswick will head into the Preliminary Final against Old Paradians with the two scalps during the home and away season. Most recently in Round 18 by 67 points.

If you weren’t convinced that the top four of Division 3 Men’s was the best four teams of the season, then Saturday’s games should be proof enough. South Melbourne Districts now have the week off to finesse their gameplan in time for the grand final. Arguably the best team of the year in Division 3 Men’s, there shouldn’t be much to fix but the break will no doubt get them fit and firing to face the winner of this weekend’s preliminary final. Said preliminary final will be at Garvey Oval, as Elsternwick take advantage of their second chance and face a Parkside team no doubt still riding the adrenaline of a tough finish in their semi final. Both teams sit on one win each against each other through the season, with the Wickers getting the win at home in round 5, before the Red Devils returned the favour in round 12. With the grand final on the line, the battle is likely to be quite the opposite of their previous encounters and finish with a small margin.
South Melbourne Districts took the lead 2-1 in the 2022 ledger against fellow previously-division-4 side Elsternwick at Trevor Barker Oval, leaving the field 19-point winners on Saturday. The Bloods continued their ladder-leading form into the game, keeping the Wickers scoreless despite missing a lot of their own goalscoring opportunities in the first term. Elsternwick got themselves back in the game and a score on the board in the second quarter, but South Melbourne Districts showed their class in the last half to keep their noses in front and ultimately send the Wickers to a must-win preliminary final. The Bloods had seven goalkickers, with Thomas Foley (3) named as the best player for his team, while unsurprisingly leading divisional goalkicker Oliver Dufficy sent through two of his own. Keeping Elsternwick in it was Jacob McGaw (2) and Julian Yeatman (2), but David Convery took top honours.
DIVISION 3 MEN’S
Wickers with second chance, Red Devils in fine form
And while we’re at it, everything’s coming up Blood-y, as their Division 3 Men’s Reserves also won their semi final to lock in a grand final appearance and get the week off, while Parkside will face a spirited Emmaus St Leo’s team eager to finally defend their 2019 flag at Garvey Oval.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2022 18
A fast-starting Parkside outfit has knocked Canterbury out of the finals by just four points in a heartbreaker at Piranha Park on Sunday. Both sides were in it all day, but a five-goal first term ultimately gave the Red Devils a lead they held onto for the whole game. The deficit was just five points at half time before it stretched out to fifteen at the final break. The Cobras will be left to rue their missed last-quarter opportunities in front of goal, controlling a lot of the ball to kick 2.6 to their opponents’ 1.1. For Parkside, it was the usual suspects in front of goal with eight individual scorers, but it was Matthew Holden and his two majors who topped the best player’s list. John Nicolopoulos (3) did his very best for Canterbury to be one of their six goalkickers, but Nick Szabo (1) took top honours.

La Trobe faced Swinburne in the second semi-final with the winner moving straight into the Grand Final. La Trobe got off to an extremely strong start kicking 5 goals whilst only allowing a single goal from the Razorbacks. The second quarter saw Swinburne slow the Trobers down however they weren’t able to capitalise on the momentum. Down by 38 points at half time the Razorbacks needed a major boost in the third quarter if they were to earn the week off. However, it wasn’t meant to be in the third as despite having their best quarter, La Trobe were able to score five goals to extend the lead out to 53 points. La Trobe was then able to gain all of the momentum as they added another four goals to their tally whilst keeping the Razorbacks goalless for the final quarter. In the end, it was La Trobe that took the win dominantly by 80 points in what is a scary result for the other remaining contenders.
La Trobe will now have the week off progressing straight through to the Grand Final whilst Swinburne will take on Masala, a side they defeated less than a month ago.
La Trobe continue winning ways as Masala win a thriller
In the knockout final, St Johns locked horns with Masala. The winner moving on to face Swinburne and the loser being eliminated from the season’s competition. Both teams got off to a slow start however it was the JOCs that were able to gain a 2-goal lead over the Tigers at the first break. The JOCs were able to kick another two goals during the second term and only allowed a single Masala goal to take a 16-point lead into halftime. Masala was able to win the third quarter with four goals, however, St John’s were still able to kick three goals of their own and hold a 9-point lead with one more quarter to play. The match was anyone’s for the taking. Kicking the first goal of the quarter, the Masala faithful were up and about however the JOCs quickly fought back kicking a goal of their own. Masala however swung the momentum kicking the final three goals and running away with the game securing a spot in the Preliminary Final.
The best players for St John’s were Jarrod Ely, Michael Horton and Jayke Tuplin. The best players for Masala were Jake Dunkley, Tom Williamson and Luke Decarne. Michael Horton led up forward for the JOCs with 3 majors whilst other goal scorers included Nicholas Terrill (1), Andrew Daly (1) and Jason Naffa (1). Zac Pahos kicked 3 goals for the Tigers. Teammates Cam Young (2), Riley Shaw (1) and Matthew Decarne (1) also were important contributors to Masala. St Johns will now look to the 2023 season where they will again have an excellent chance to win the flag. Masala will move onto the preliminary final to take on Swinburne on Sunday.

It was a hotly contested start to the William Buck Premier Women’s Preliminary Final between St Kevin’s and Caulfield Grammarians, with both teams surrounding the ball and slowing down the play. Caulfield got an early run and were able to get the first goal of the game thanks to a free kick. Once the ball was back in the middle, St Kevin’s were looking to strike back but the pressure being applied by Caulfield was causing turnovers. Caulfield were using the ground to their advantage, running the ball along the wings and having repeat forward entries but were unable to score much-needed goals early to take advantage of their momentum. After some early running play, the game started to lock up, stoppages were frequent and Caulfield were pressuring St Kevin’s into mistakes all across the ground.
For the final game of the year, the 2022 William Buck Premier Women’s Grand Final, there really could not be any other two teams. They have sat in the top positions on the ladder for the entire year, and now the best two teams in the competition will face off on Sunday for the Premiership at VAFA HQ.
In the third term, St Kevin’s came out firing early. Forward Sarah Cameron stood tall after kicking a beautiful goal keeping the momentum with St Kevin’s early, Caulfield kept the pressure going in the third, but St Kevin’s showed their dominance and were able to stay a step ahead at the ball. As the quarter went on, St Kevin’s pushed harder and
The pressure from Caulfield did not slow down early in the second but St Kevin’s were able to use the ground well and find space to get the ball into their attacking fifty regularly. St Kevin’s would continue to limit the attack of Caulfield, upping their pressure on the ball carrier and blocking Caulfield’s ability to transition the ball to their attack. Caulfield did have their chances after some good running play, they were unable to capitalise and impact the scoreboard and gain back some momentum. This would result in a goalless term for Caulfield, while St Kevin’s were able to take a strong lead into the main break, leading by 25 points.
had all the answers to any attempt Caulfield had to move the ball forward to attack the goals. The pressure from St Kevin’s didn’t let up, the Caulfield defence was kept busy the whole third term, but they kept their heads up and continued to fight. St Kevin’s class was on full display kicking ten unanswered goals before Caulfield were able to get one back. The offensive run from St Kevin’s did not slow down at all, their ability to find a teammate in space was helping them to continue to kick goals and extend their lead. Sarah Cameron was vital in the St Kevin’s forward line, kicking 6 goals for the day and using the ball to find teammates who could score when she couldn’t.
Using all the options in their forward fifty, Caulfield could do nothing to stop the attack in the end. Despite the hot start, Caulfield were only able to manage one more goal for the entire game, which was a credit to the defensive pressure from St Kevin’s who were able to limit the opportunities Caulfield had to get near goals. The final siren sounded, confirming a 79-point victory for the SKOB TheSaints.strong

finish for St Kevin’s will see them riding a wave of confidence into the biggest game of the year on Sunday when they take on Kew at Elsternwick Park.
The first goal for St Kevin’s was hard fought, coming from a scrappy contest after a stoppage. From here the backline of Caulfield began to feel the pressure but Charlie Anderson stood up to the occasion, picking off kicks across the wing and helping Caulfield to transition down field. A strong team effort from St Kevin’s in the dying minutes would result in them taking a small lead into the first break.
GRAND FINAL PREVIEW
St Kevin’s have been the dominant team for the entire season, finishing the home & away season as Minor Premiers, with a huge percentage thanks to their dominant wins across the season. Kew, finishing in second, suffered just two losses, one to Caulfield Grammarians in round two and to St Kevin’s in round 11.

Between the two teams, it has been a mixed bag of results when they have met during the 2022 season. In the first meeting, it was Kew who came away with a narrow victory and delivered the one and only loss for St Kevin’s in the regular season. Round 11 when they met again saw a 49-point win in favour of St Kevin’s.

2022 PREMIER RESERVE WOMEN’S
If St Kevin’s can use their strength of running and finding space across the ground, they will be in a strong position to take the win. Also look for the battle in the middle of the ground, both teams have the ability to run out of contest, but also apply pressure and force turnovers. With both teams being so evenly matched it is hard to pick a winner. Either way it is going to be a cracking game of VAFA women’s football showcasing the very best of the competition. Kevins

If the two teams had not met in the second week of the finals, it would be easy to pick St Kevin’s as the favourites based on regular season form and consistency. In this all-important match-up, Kew came away with a 9 point victory, this resulted in them getting a week’s rest while St Kevin’s faced off against Caulfield Grammarians the past Theweekend.Semi Final win is sure to have filled Kew with confidence that they can match St Kevin’s and get their hands on the Premiership cup. One vital area that St Kevin’s will need to focus on to get the victory is somehow dismantling the defensive wall that Kew has developed. This tactic has seen Kew stop forward entries for their opponents and lock the ball in their half of the ground.
