SEASON 2023 - May 13
PLAY4BCNA | Breast Cancer Network Australia
We know that local community organisations are often the heart of a personal support network that extends beyond the immediate family, close friends and medical treating team throughout someone’s breast cancer experience.
That’s why we want to thank you for getting behind Breast Cancer Network Australia’s (BCNA) PLAY4BCNA Pink Sports Day round over the Mother’s Day weekend. Your participation not only shows your support for the families in your club and community affected by breast cancer, but it also raises important funds to help BCNA continue our work.
This year BCNA celebrates our 25th anniversary and all the advancements in breast cancer treatment and care that we have seen over that time. We will spend the year highlighting the key moments that have defined our network as we have grown into the organisation we are today, while also paving the way for what we will achieve in the future.
We will officially celebrate in August with the 6th Field of Women, where over 10,000 people will stand with us on the MCG to form the Pink Lady. We hope you can join us in what will be a united display of strength and support for those around us affected by breast cancer.
For 25 years, local community groups have been connecting with BCNA for ways to show and extend support to those around them. Some host PLAY4BCNA Pink Sports Days or Pink Lady events. Others participate in activities like fun runs, head shaves or organise their own community-based Mini-Field of Women. Every dollar raised for BCNA helps us continue to be here every day for those who need us.
BCNA’s Helpline, which was officially launched in 2001, continues to provide compassionate and practical support to over 10,000 people every year, including family and
Kirsten Pilatti Chief Executive Officer Breast Cancer Network Australiafriends of those diagnosed. Our My Journey information resource is used by 24,000 people seeking tailored information about their own breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and care. Meanwhile, our peer-topeer Online Network continues to connect people with others going through a similar experience every day.
Although VAFA clubs have been hosting Pink Sports Day in support of BCNA for over a decade, this year will be the fifth year that VAFA have officially endorsed a PLAY4BCNA round over the Mother’s Day weekend to encourage all clubs to get behind the round.
Last year it was fantastic to see 20 VAFA clubs ‘pinking up’ on field in BCNA socks, hosting a bake sale or arranging a raffle fundraiser, and holding more formal events such as a Mother’s Day Luncheon or Ladies’ Night. We couldn’t do what we do without your incredible support. Every year we are blown away by how many people come down to support the ‘PLAY4BCNA Pink Sports Day’ round and I’m looking forward to getting around to as many clubs as possible to join in the day.
We wish you all the best this weekend as you pull on your PLAY4BCNA pink socks and beanies to support those around you diagnosed and living with breast cancer. Have fun as you ‘pink up’ to PLAY4BCNA!
For any clubs that can’t participate this weekend, we welcome you to hold your event any weekend that suits you!
And don’t forget that if you or someone you know is diagnosed with breast cancer you can call our Helpline on 1800 500 258. We’re here, every step.

Play the kids and watch them flourish
For as long as I’ve been fortunate enough to be involved with the VAFA. The off-season sees a long-line of former AFL/VFL stars recruited and committing to clubs in the competition. This pre-season has seen arguably the lowest number of those players for quite some time.
Mitch Wallis (Western Bulldogs) has returned to his old school, St Kevin’s. Dan Hannebery (Sydney/St Kilda) likewise with Old Xaverians. Tom Cutler (Essendon) has headed to University Blues.
When Old Melburnians coach Paul Satterley joined the Saturday warm-up on RSN Xtra2, he noted the less than usual “high-profile” recruits to join William Buck Premier in 2023.
“It’s a different looking VAFA, I think there seems to be a lot of young guys coming through, more than ever” he said.
Our great friend Satts’ has me thinking about the opportunity that comes with less of the high-profile names joining the competition. Allowing and somewhat forcing the hands of all clubs to go deep into the list, be it reserves, thirds but moreso, the under 19’s.
Looking into Round 5, it’s incredible to think that Old Xaverians have given opportunities to 11 new players after four rounds. I can’t recall a time when the red and black mafia offered that many fresh faces a senior spot across an entire season, let alone the first month.
Facing off against the reigning premiers, St Kevin’s, this next group of young stars will have to be at their very best. They’ve already had moments of brilliance, Oscar Duncan (Round 2 rising star nominee) has been the clubs first choice ruckman the past fortnight.
Tommy McRae, has the traits of an old-fashioned footballer, while Tommy Dunne, has played in all four games so far. Making his senior debut last year, Ben Bilston-McGillen returned from the Carlton VFL side.
We’ve been arguing already, how does this SKOB team get even better?
The Wallis inclusions are significant, no doubt. Looking beyond their output, the club holds the 2022 Rising Star in very high-regard, Luke Winter. Jack Darmody has played 26 games of senior footy, and isn’t 21 years old yet. While Ben Mansfield is one of the first picked when he’s available. 13 games into his senior career and he has a Premiership, the stuff of dreams.
Anthony Lynch has given opportunities to Liam Gunson (18 years old), and Robert Larcher. Both are both straight out of the year 12 college APS team. Jack Palmer, another who made his senior debut on the weekend.
When these two sides meet on Saturday at Elsternwick Park. The game that was billed as the Hannebery vs. Wallis Cup, will be an afterthought as the next wave of stars crash into one another.
At Harry Trott Oval, Collegians will be riding a wave of momentum. The purple army coming off their biggest winning margin in nearly four years.
Old Melburnians are desperate for a win. This certainly isn’t ideal timing, running into one of the most in-form teams in the competition.
The OM’s are the reason behind this column, 11 players in the team with less than 10 games of senior football.
Charles Dowling and Will Richards are two of the 11 who’ve got bright futures ahead of them, they held their heads high on Saturday. Doing everything they could to keep their team in the contest. They’ll have the responsibility of doing so again against the Lions.
For the first time in his tenure, Jared Rivers has depth at his disposal. The fact that Teigan Otter (Round 1 rising star) played in the reserves on the weekend says plenty. Dylan Thomas made his club debut on Saturday, and Jordan Carroll started to find his groove on the wing. With eyes always on King Kenny, Viv Michie and Dave Mirra. There’s room in those purple and yellow hearts to find love for Ben Van Twest, Jasper Davy and Will Pewtress.
Even off the field, the Lions are flying with Wesley graduate Josh Heriot going places behind the microphone.
Old Brighton are humming under Dan Donati. Life under the new mentor is ticking all the boxes.
This weekend they face off against University Blues, a side they’ve got the wood over (won the last 4 matches). Park the names Harry Hill, Ayce Cordy, Tom Fisher, Cam O’Shea, Tom Yorgey, Sam Grimley and Will Lewis for this.
Circle the names Jamie Hope for the Tonners (Round 3 rising star), he’s kicked eight goals from his two senior appearances. Defender, Luca Macnab. And, two stars of the 2022 Under 19 brigade, Sam Flockhart, in the ruck and Tom Burnell, part of the midfield rotation. These are the ones who will make life tough for Blues. On the flipside, you won’t see Eddy Ziebath take a backward step. Much the opposite, he will relish the contest and the conditions of Brighton Beach Oval.
Charlie Furphy on the wing has a strong turn of foot, speaking of pace, Sam Cousins has that in spades as the clubs small forward and James Paterson has been threatening to tear a game to shreds. There’s been significant change from the 2019 premiers to where we are today. From the Premiership Team, just five remain on the list, only three played on the weekend just gone.
Guy Martyn’s side know they need to get going. They’re fortunate at this stage, three teams below the Blues remain winless.
ROUND 5 TIPS
Old Brighton v Uni Blues
Old Xaverians v St Kevin’s Collegians v Old Melburnians
Uni Blacks v Caulfield Grammarians
Old Haileybury v Old Scotch
One of those three teams will find their way onto the winners list this week. Unless University Blacks and Caulfield Grammarians fight out a draw.
Both sides have run into last year’s Grand Finalists in the opening month of the season and no doubt walked off the ground with plenty of learnings from those contests.
Presumably, Uni Blacks will welcome back key ruckman Josh Steadman for this contest. Supporting the co-captain are the likes of Finnian Raymond, who moved to Melbourne from Queensland, has played all 4 games in 2023, turns 19 at the end of the month.
Lachie O’Hara, made his debut in Round 2 and Jack Cassidy. After having a taste of senior footy in 2021, and 2022, has played all four games in 2023, he celebrates his 21st birthday next week.
Ayui Makieng, what a talent. He has played every game this year, been made to ruck at times, he’s kicked goals and named amongst the best players. This young man is more than capable of playing different roles, and will take mark of the year one day.
For the Fields, one of the competition’s best is Oscar Roberts. It is easy to forget how young he is as he made such a quick transition from school football to senior footy last season. His 2022 form (named in the team of the year) has continued and he has added an attacking thread to his game.
Archie Loughnan is a key forward, working with Julian Dobosz. He is immensely fit and strong for his age and has a beautiful pair of hands. Darcy Twist, the U/19’s best and fairest winner, holding down a starting midfield role and impressing with his ability to win his own football. These guys will be pivotal to Guy McKenna’s set up if they’re to come off the Uni Main with their first set of points for the year.
The final game of the round, pins Old Scotch up against Old Haileybury
Daniel Ward’s team would have looked for any place to hide after the result of last weekend. This is a proud football club that internally will be expecting to be on from the first bounce to make amends for the round four result.
Without Brede Seccull, the midfield looks slightly different. Lachie Treverton was also missing, a key component in the side. Luke Bailey is hard to miss in the middle, and Andreas Stefanakis provides the grunt work for Haileybury at the source.
Mitch Kirkwood-Scott made his senior debut on the weekend, alongside his brother Liam. Charlie Sinclair is a young fella to keep your eye on as the season unfolds.
Mark Gnatt is the prototype coach for blooding young talent. Although he has certainly got his fair share of followers in 2023 - Paul Satterley, James Byrne.
If anyone asks, Gnatty started the trend.
I could almost name the entire team of the Cardinals, except for a couple. Sorry Doug Lawrence, Andy Jelbart, Aiden Franetic. There is youthful exuberance in this Old Scotch line-up, Jack McCorkell, Angus Symons. When they’re available from the VFL, Tyler Sellers, Ryan Valentine. Even their ruckman Sam Grant has shown promising signs in the early stages of his senior career.
The Cardinals are in the window, they want to go under the radar. I’m not sure how much longer we can keep them under wraps.
There’s plenty to like about the future of William Buck Premier, and this competition. Our clubs are in good hands with the next generation of stars. The coaches are willing to give the youngsters opportunities to excel, and from here, maybe one-day, they’ll be the ‘high-profile recruits’ that return to the competition.

Reigning premiers no longer undefeated as a new contender emerges
Round Four finally saw the defeat of the reigning premiers, as Old Scotch sent a warning to the competition in William Buck Premier Women’s. Fitzroy finally got their first win of the season, knocking off Coburg. Old Xaverians are unfortunately no longer part of the Premier Women’s season after being regraded.
Caulfield Grammarians had a dominant outing against Melbourne Uni, their second quarter setting them up to finish the game off strong. Caulfield kept Melbourne Uni to nine points for three quarters of the game. However, a late resurgence from Melbourne Uni would’ve given Caulfield a scare in the last quarter, kicking two goals.
Chloe O’Malley was Caulfield’s best, kicking two goals, whilst Marguerite Purcell kicked another goal to be named amongst the best. Madison Katerelos was the best for Melbourne Uni, also finishing with a goal.
Caulfield have a big match up against Old Scotch next week, whilst Melbourne Uni will play Fitzroy.
After nearly knocking off SKOB, the Lions suffered an unfortunate defeat to Fitzroy by one goal, who claimed their first win of the season. In what was a low scoring affair, Fitzroy kicked their only two goals of the game in the first quarter, with Coburg’s only goal for the game coming in the second quarter.
After half time, each team only kicked one behind for the remainder of the game, with Fitzroy running out eventual winners to claim their first victory for 2023.
Leila Zayat was best on for Coburg, whilst Elaine Murphy was Fitzroy’s best. Fitzroy will play Melbourne Uni next week in a home game, whilst Coburg come up against the first placed Collegians in what will be a tough challenge.
Collegians had a convincing win over West Brunswick, bouncing back from last week’s loss to Kew. Collegians only allowed the Magpies one goal for the game, and they only managed to kick three points after the first quarter.
It was a different story for Collegians, who managed a goal in every quarter and were accurate in front of the sticks to finish with 5.2.
Whilst Georgia Harris kicked two goals for the purple army, it was Jessica Pham who was their best. Kristy De Pellegrini scored the Magpies’ only goal, whilst Kaitlyn Day was best on.
Brunswick will play Kew next week, who are fresh off their bye in what will be a tough game at Victoria Park
The biggest moment of the round was Old Scotch defeating SKOB, who suffered their first defeat for the season. Whilst they dominated the first half, kicking 3.2 compared to Scotch’s 1-7, Scotch came out firing in the second half to kick 19 points and hold SKOB scoreless for the rest of the game.
The win now puts Old Scotch just above SKOB on the ladder, moving up to third place. Sarah Betts was again in the best for the fourth time this season, as was Bree Doyle. For Old Scotch, Isabella Gray was their best.
Next week, SKOB have a bye, whilst Old Scotch play Caulfield in what should be the match of the round.

OGS prove too strong as Roy’s and Snowdog’s continue unbeaten streak
Wet and cold conditions greeted Saturday afternoon footy as the ladder for season 2023 starts to take shape with three teams still yet to record a win for the year. Meanwhile, St Bernard’s and Fitzroy are perched right at the top with undefeated campaigns in the first four rounds.
St Bernard’s played out at their fortress over the weekend with a victory over AJAX by 49 points. The Snowdog’s entered as hot favourites for this contest and didn’t disappoint their fans with a strong first quarter of football kicking 5 goals to none. AJAX showed some great fight in the second quarter keeping the Snowdog’s to just one goal and cutting the margin back to 20 points at the main break. But the second half of football saw St Bernard’s kick away on their home deck with seven goals in the half. Ben Overman was influential for the Snowdog’s along with Ben Huggard who kicked two majors. Oliver Liberatore also booted three goals for the afternoon with the Snowdog’s sitting second behind Fitzroy on the Premier B Men’s ladder.
De La Salle were on the winners list in round four with a victory over a gallant Monash Blues. Monash, who are yet to register a win this season, showed strong fight but couldn’t quite stick with De La as they kicked away in the second half. Tom Filipovic was huge for De La Salle with a best on ground performance while up forward, Josh Cumberlidge, Thomas Lyngberg and Adrian Indovino each kicked three goals for the afternoon. Although Monash were able to stay within touching distance for much of the afternoon, De La Salle remained comfortable and the stronger side. Meanwhile, from a Monash perspective Mitch King helped keep them in it with five majors with Alex Bennett also having a strong presence around the ground for Monash.
Meanwhile, Fitzroy continued their winning ways beating Old Trinity by 33 points at the Brunswick Street Oval. In a relatively low scoring affair, The Roys were able to take control and led at every break with Jack Hart booting home three goals alongside Charlie Faubel who kicked two goals to advance to nine goals kicked for the season. The ruck dual was also a fascinating contest with star Trinity ruckman Harry Thompson battling ex-teammate Charles Roberts. On a positive for Trinity, the Scott brothers were able to hit their peaks with Myles Scott kicking three majors and Oliver Scott finding plenty of the football to be named Trinity’s best player.
After coming up from Premier C last season, Old Geelong have proved themselves to be a contender in 2023 at B grade level and this was solidified over the weekend, with a 48 point win over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers. They pounced on the Tigers early with five first quarter goals which set the tone for the remainder of the game. Harrison Kol was massive for Old Geelong with four goals to his name while Sam Harrison also proved influential along with Mickey Nicholls with three majors. The Tigers were assisted by the performances from James Mangoni and Michael Barnes but if wasn’t enough to keep up with the Old Geelong outfit.
The final game of the round saw Beaumaris up against Williamstown CYMS and it was the Sharks who pulled away to record their third win of the season. Williamstown as they’ve shown so far this season showed resistance to the Shark’s attack in the first half, but fell away as the game progressed with the final margin being 49 points. Beaumaris favourite Jak Nardino was back to his best with three goals and was helped by Benedict Andrews who kicked four goals. Sharks’ ruckman Callum Heath was important with a best on ground display. Tane Roordink for Williamstown was their main man up forward with four goals and progressing to seven for the season.
It’s another massive weekend of Premier B Men’s action so what can we look forward to in Round 5?
It all kicks off with what could very well be match of the round in Premier B with Fitzroy to travel out to Waverley Oval to take on De La Salle. The freshness of youth at De La Salle has been a major asset for them in recent seasons but they’ll have to bring their top gear on Saturday. Whatever the result, it should be a tight tussle between these sides. The second matchup see’s Old Trinity tackle Beaumaris with these two teams similarly placed. Trinity can be dangerous and will be looking to overcome the Sharks who sit one win above them. The other intriguing match will see Williamstown CYMS and Monash Blues go head-to-head with both teams yet to have a win this year. The final two games of the round will see St Bernard’s host St Bedes/Mentone while Old Geelong will welcome AJAX to Como Park. It’s sure to be another cracking round of football and with some nice weather forecast for the weekend it should make for perfect game conditions.

Tigers come up trumps as Cobras’ secret weapon makes her presence felt
The wet weather wasn’t enough to hold back the adrenaline-fueled, football-playing abilities of Premier B Women over the weekend.
It was lovely weather, not only for the ducks on but also for the Old Yarra Cobras who scored 17 goals and 11 behinds against the ladies from North Brunswick
North Brunswick came off a week with a bye, optimistic and hoping to finally leave their mark for the first time this season, which seemed possible up until the end of the second quarter. With three chances at goal, it was accuracy that let them down, and not for the lack of effort from Mary Natalianis who was deemed best player.
Can they lift their game up against the ladies from the other side of Brunswick in the next round?
Iliana Zarfiriou , fighting for her spot as leading goal kicker, achieved an incredible five goals for her team but was not alone, working alongside best-on-field Zoe Scanlon. Although the Cobras triumphed, with a 110-point margin in the final scores, they are second on the ladder with next week’s home match putting them head-to-head against the marvellous Mazenod.
Aquinas headed towards the salty sea breeze to take on the St Bedes/Mentone Tigers in round 4. In a nail-biting game with only a 13-point margin in closing scores, it was the talented Tigers who reigned supreme.
It was a battle of the Lauras, with Laura Amelung kicking three goals for the Tigers and Laura McHugh scoring two for Aquinas, both leading goal kickers for their teams.
Nina Coghill put on a best-player performance, showing off her amazing abilities, and bringing her team over the line.
Can she keep up her extraordinary efforts at the home of Richmond Central next week?
Will Aquinas come back for revenge against the Monash Blues next round? The last time they met, the Blues came out on top, but with players such as best-on-field Natasha Derksen, a win may be on the horizon.
The Monash Blues travelled to the home of Mazenod over the weekend with their heads held high. In a game that could have been anyone’s, it was the Blues who came out on top, with three goals and six behinds.
Mazenod had a particularly hard time making their mark this week. Erin Bunter was a stand-out player for Mazenod, who focused on defending against the bustling Blues to shorten the gap between final scores.
It was another week of triumph, for the Blues, still sitting comfortably on top of the ladder. Success could not have been achieved without the contribution of goal-kicking superstars Ella Stephenson, Molly McFarlane and Caitlin Williams, as well as best player Brooke Thompson.
The Blues will play in a familiar environment next week with a home game against the aspirant Aquinas. Mazenod will be heading to the habitat of the competent Cobras.

Old Ivanhoe & Ormond: The season’s first draw
It’s been a fascinating opening month of Premier C Men’s to begin 2023.
From the surprise packets of our two elevated sides PEGS and Old Camberwell Grammarians remaining undefeated, to Hampton Rovers. Last year’s second place finishes at the conclusion of the home and away season sitting in the bottom two.
Here’s what a waterlogged Saturday produced across round four.
Last week on the VAFA’s For the Love of the Game podcast, Josh Heriot predicted the battle between Old Ivanhoe and Ormond at Chelsworth Park would be a “ding-dong battle”. Predicting the closest match of the round, that’s exactly what he got. The two sides couldn’t be split at the final siren as they produced the season’s first draw.
The margin at each interval was never beyond a goal, the lead changed hands numerous times through the afternoon. Perhaps Old Ivanhoe walked off the ground feeling slightly disappointed having had eight scoring shots in the final term, netting just two majors for the term. Harrison Frazer and Jake Bradley combined for six goals for the day.
While for the Monders, Thomas Buckley led from the front with three goals taking his season tally to eight after the first month.
Old Ivanhoe will look to return swiftly to the winners list when they face off against Mazenod this weekend, however it will be no easy feat. Ormond return to E E Gunn Reserve taking on Marcellin. Last time they met, Round 18 of 2022, with Ormond prevailing in another classic.
The last time Old Carey tasted success was Round 10, 2022. They’ve lost their last nine matches but over the weekend the Panthers were able to belt out the club song after a 68-point win over Mazenod
The victory was set up with five goals in the opening quarter, holding the Nodders goalless. Lachlan Godden, Nicholas Brewin and Darcy Munro kicked nine goals between them. Three focal points in the forward would impress Old Carey coach Aaron Bailey. Tim Newton was named the best player on the ground.
After back-to-back 15 goal performances, the Nodders came back to earth with a thud, being held to just five goals for the day. Sitting 2-2 after the first month, they’re smack bang in the middle of the table and will be out to avenge this weekend out at Chelsworth Park.
What’s going on at the Hampton Rovers ?
The pre-season pundits would’ve been hard pressed to not select them as the front-runners for the 2023 season, finishing 2022 in the top two. Heartbreak during the finals series. The season hasn’t started the way Anthony Quon would have envisaged. Parkdale Vultures the latest side to walk away winners against them. Two out of their last three meetings the Vultures have had the last laugh.
The final margin, a flattering 10 behinds more than the Rovers. Had the Vultures had the kicking boots on it could have been far more significant. Since Round 7 of last year, Owen Lalor has been able to get 13 wins from the last 19 games on the board, a winning culture, a positive vibe and plenty of excitement around Gerry Green Reserve.
On the weekend, after leading by two points at half time. Seven goals in the premiership quarter gave the club an insurmountable 38 point lead. Oliver Green led the way in front of goal with four. Lewis was the King of the Castle, and supported by Jai Elcock running rampant.
The Rovers will take the weekend off in Round 5 to regroup. If they learnt anything from 2022, they’ll know the season is certainly a marathon, and no doubt will have the belief internally they can turn this slow start around. Parkdale will aim to continue their winning ways against a red hot Old Carey.
PEGS were able to hold Marcellin to three goals for the day in the final game of the round to continue their perfect start to life in Premier C. A relatively contested game of footy, it was during the second and third quarter PEGS were able to impact the scoreboard with seven goals to none to make the mountain to big for Marcellin to climb.
Pat Macdonough was awarded best on ground honours, Brett Hannah riding shotgun. For Marcellin, Josh Atwell has been the club’s shining light in the past three weeks. The club heads to E E Gunn Reserve this weekend to tackle Ormond.
PEGS are setting themselves up for a Grand Final rematch and a top of the table clash against Old Camberwell. The Grammarians will be primed and ready to go after having the bye over the weekend. A contest that’s got Josh Heriot screaming from the hilltops “another ding-dong battle”.

New Rooms Honour an AJAX Great
Back in 2018, AJAX and our neighbours, South Melbourne Districts Sporting Club, were the fortunate recipients of grants from both the Victorian State Government (Department of Sport and Recreation) and Parks Victoria to enable both AJAX and SMDSC to build additional change room facilities in order to cater for the growth that both clubs are experiencing in player participation, and specifically to cater for the growth in women’s football. This initiative was formally announced by the then member for Albert Park, Martin Foley in April 2018 and it was hoped that the design and construction of the new rooms would be completed by the end of 2019. Following a series of delays, construction of the new rooms was completed in late 2022. The new rooms have been named the ‘Daryl Cohen Rooms’ in honour of our clubs founding father, and in recognition of the very generous donation received from his family toward this project.
Tackle Your Feelings in 2023
Tackle Your Feelings is a free mental health training program for community AFL coaches, as well as committee members and other club support staff.
The program was formed by the AFL Coaches Association, AFL Players’ Association and Zurich Insurance in 2018 and is delivered by a local psychologist and aims to help participants gain the tools to Understand, Recognise and Respond to signs of mental ill-health in their players. The program is based on the education delivered to the AFL industry and is led by high profile player and coach ambassadors.
In 2023 VAFA are excited to be working with Tackle Your Feelings in 2023 to pilot a new program for players.
Heading into Round 5 of the season the VAFA & TYF have delivered player workshops to three clubs; created awareness, and provided education and resources whilst having attendees participate in group activities in a safe and inclusive space, to promote mental health discussions.
The feedback from clubs have who undertaken the Player workshops has been extremely positive and the engagement of all clubs to date has demonstrated the significance of Player Welfare and Mental Health education within the VAFA Community.
If your club is interested in hosting Tackle Your Feelings workshop contact VAFA Club Development Coordinator, Casey Crapper (casey@vafa.com.au).

Women’s Rising Star Nominee
Kelsey Clark
The VAFA congratulates Kelsey Clark from Old Trinity on receiving the Round 4 Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star nomination for her 2-goal best-on-ground performance against Therry on the weekend.
What the club said:
Although Kelsey is only playing in her second season for Old Trinity’s Women’s team, her impact on the team has been marked. Always motivated, Kels lifts her team-mates by providing constant encouragement and high energy at all trainings and games. Her presence is particularly strong on game day, as she uses her experience and voice to direct players and provide excellent on-field leadership.
Although Kelsey is one of our team’s youngest players at 19 years of age, she is incredibly well respected and admired by all her team-mates for her maturity and her reliability. Equally, she is highly regarded for her formidable playing style.
In the words of Coach Deano: “I can throw Kelsey into any position on the ground as I know I’ll get a contest from her and, like all my players, is an absolute pleasure to coach.”
Kelsey’s pure strength in the contest is one of her biggest assets. Whether it’s taking big marks at full-forward, negating the opposition player in a one-on-one contest in the backline, or providing some strong back-up in the ruck, Kelsey is the epitome of a versatile and powerful competitor.
Through her determination to get her team across the line, Kelsey plays with passion and represents the Old Trinity Football brand with pride.
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Bailey Ace Payze
The VAFA congratulates Bailey Ayce Payze, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 4. Payze tasted senior football with Old Peninsula in 2022 and has been a regular starter in the senior side over the first month of the season.
What the club said:
Bailey Payze has been a familiar face around the OPFC since he was born. He has been a Pirate long before many of his current teammates. The Blue and Tan runs deep thru young Bailey.
Bailey is a worthy nominee. He impacts on the football field and off the field around his club in many areas.
He fits all categories of a worthy nominee. He is tenacious, hardworking, learns fast and can play key roles inside the contest and outside. His forward craft is a valuable tool and allows him to play taller than his stature. He is a pleasure to coach and a great young man to be around on and off the field.
A Krushing defeat for Oakleigh at the hands of the Magpies
There was plenty of wayward kicking across the weekend and a few sneaky upsets that saw a teams rise and fall but also sees UHS-VU and Glen Eira as top contenders in the early part of season.
West Brunswick won against Oakleigh in a remarkable game of footy for the Magpies. The points kept on coming for the teams as inaccurate kicking saw the Magpies maintain a narrow lead within the game.
It was the regular names Irving, Cottrell, Buckler all with 2 goals was enough to help the Magpies kick away from their opposition.
The goalless goal kicker Aaron Cloke meant Oakleigh had to look to new avenues to goal for the game. Without his usual impact on the game, the Krushers were left waiting as they went down for the first time this season.
This would have been been enormous elation for the Magpies to hopefully be able to kick start their season and try push a few more top 5 sides for season 2023.
Oakleigh return home with their tail between their legs, keen on avenging for last weeks loss. The Magpies head out to Victoria Park in Kew and will look to continue their winning ways against Kew.
Kew were back at Victoria Park for the weekend’s clashes against Ivanhoe, the game started really slow. Literally zero-all at the end of the first quarter, but it was the second quarter that the Bears started to get on the right path on their march to victory.
The Bears plundered six goals in the second term with Will Llewelyn starring as he kicked four goals, assisted by teammates in Max Waters, Ryan Griggs and Matt Sharkey. Ivanhoe were inaccurate all day, costing them dearly, missing key opportunities to convert.
The Bears would be happy with the result either way getting their second win for the season winning by 54 points. They’ll be looking to continue on their winning ways when they face West Brunswick this weekend, the Hoers welcome Old Peninsula to Ivanhoe Park as they search for their first win of the new season.
Preston Bullants hosted Glen Eira at the WR. Ruthven Reserve, the Gryphons bursted out of the blocks early with five early goals, Hayden Bass helping this cause through being able to convert truly as he kicked a bag of five.
Preston at stages looked good but were just a bit able to capitalise on their mistakes. The Gryphons as much as they were lead by Bass with five, Lachie Myers and the Carey brothers were strong all game to really get them over the line.
As the game went on they were able to extend their lead at each change. The 57-point victory leaves them as one of two sides to remain undefeated through the first month of the year. The Bullants are on the lookout for their first win for 2023, will it come this weekend as they face off against Prahran FC?
Speaking of Prahan FC, they took on Therry Penola what looked like a belter on paper, and it lived up to the hype.
Both teams really eager to secure the four points and put their team in the top four.
They played like a team destined for finals glory. On the flipside, Prahran’s go-to man Matty Clifford booted two critical goals to enhance their chances but it was the Lions troopers led by Kane O’Hallaroan and Jack Pelosi to really help get them over the line.
With Therry coming off the ground winners it elevates them to another position higher on the ladder seeing them slot into 4th position behind Oakleigh on percentage, the victory has me asking the question - Are they the real deal in 2023?
The real test comes this weekend when they take on the undefeated Gryphons at home. Prahran FC will be looking to bounce back against Preston.
UHS-VU is looking like the team to beat for season 2023, being undefeated and really starting to cement a spot in the top two as they work towards returning to Premier C in 2024. Their opponents Old Peninsula were in the game all day, with scores level at half time and three quarter time. UHS-VU followed the trend of the weekend, unable to convert in front of goal, had they done so, the margin could have blown the game out of proportion with kicking 8.21 69.
Seiderman and Dimattina were key pillars though to help the UHS-VU over the line as they claimed victory and finish the opening month of the year on top of the ladder. They’re off to Scammell Reserve to tackle the Krushers in round 5, Old Peninsula are on the road to Ivanhoe Park for a must-win contest.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S
Lauren Atkinson Access Team Lists on GameDay via VAFA.com.auOmlettes clip Hawthorn WINGS
The weekend just gone saw wild and wintery weather conditions, raising the question – who are the best wet weather footy sides in Division 1 Women’s?
The round began with Old Geelong taking on Old Brighton at home. The slippery conditions combined with the defensive pressure from both sides made it hard for anyone to score, with neither team managing a goal for the first three quarters of play.
However, Old Brighton came out firing in the final term, kicking four goals to zero, and were able to extend their undefeated winning streak.
Kathleen Dunn and Juliet Grant continued their excellent form, appearing in the best for Old Geelong for the fourth time this season, while Sienna Courtney, Annie Grant and Jasmine Tait impressed the Old Brighton coaches in their victory.
The next match of the round saw the Hampton Rovers get their first win of the season against Marcellin OC
The Rovers started strong, kicking two goals in the first quarter, which set them up nicely for the remainder of the game, until they were able to add another two goals in the final term.
While Marcellin had their fair share of the ball, they were unable to capitalise on their efforts, only kicking 6 behinds for the day.
Lauren Morecroft was the only multiple goal scorer for the day, managing to kick two while Maisy Evans and Tania Carpinteri were named as the bests for their respective sides.
In the highly anticipated match up between Old Haileybury and Beaumaris, Beaumaris were once again able to show everyone that they should be a hot favourite for the flag.
With Beaumaris recording fourteen scoring shots to Old Haileybury’s four, it could have been a lot worse for the home side, who only trailed by 15 points at the final siren.
Bridget Hanrahan and Taylah Vines-Chapple both tried their hardest to get Old Haileybury over the line, kicking a goal each and being recognised as the best.
For the winning side, Caley Ryan, Sienna Tedde and Samantha Baisas all demonstrated why they were recently named in the Team of the Decade for Beaumaris.
The next match of the round saw the freshly regraded Old Xaverians take on 2022 Grand Finalists, Old Camberwell Grammarians, in a spicy battle.
It was close all day, with Old Camberwell leading by just four points at three quarter time. Old Xaverians were able to kick two straight goals in the final quarter, resulting in the first draw of Division 1 Womens’ this year.
The draw should fill Old Xaverians with the confidence that they are now at home in a division where they can compete with the best, while Old Camberwell will rue their inaccuracy in front of goals, ending the game 4.10 to Old Xaverians’ 5.4.
The VAFA is looking for volunteer reporters to cover Divisions 2, 3 & 4 Women’s for the 2023 season. If you’re interested, please email media@vafa.com.au
The final match of the round saw Hawthorn AFC host Old Melburnians for their special Wings match. Unfortunately for Hawthorn, Old Melburnians were too strong, defeating the Hawks by a convincing 62 points.
Kayla May Smith was impressive for the Hawks in her first game this year, while Georgia Dunlop was best on for Old Melburnians. Sophie Fraser also put in a solid performance, slotting four goals.
Winning their first game in Division 1 after moving up from Division 2, Old Melburnians will be proud of their performance and excited to see how far they can go in this division.

What will your Holmesglen story be?
The Freight-train Friars are Full-Steam Ahead
St Mary’s Salesian put up a determined battle, but the continued discipline and adaptability of the Whitefriars proved too much for singing Saints.
The Friars halftime 20 point lead was reduced to 2-points as the Saints brought the thunder in the third quarter. The Saints got on top in the midfield dominating the corridor with quick footy and converting to the scoreboard with prowess.
Catherwood, Moulday and Mattiske worked hard within the in and under which allowed Elliston (4 Goals) to dominate the goal kicking. But after Coach Lucas Matthews addressed the midfield issues at three quarter time, the fourth saw the true fright of the Friars. Once the Friars got their hands on the footy in key moments within the centre, the scoreboard told its testimony.
Big Marlon Simbolon and Max Warrick rose to another level at the centre bounces, providing opportunity to star forwards Sam Keisiker (4 Goals) and champion Daniel Wood who is seemingly unstoppable in the forward line. Daniel Massirotti and Sam Mathers hold the back line with the much-needed physicality, discipline and pressure the Friars are all too infamous for. Resulting in a 29 point victory. Game after game the 4-0 freight-train Friars take footy to another level with another impressive performance.
Parkeside’s victory over old foes South Melbourne Districts in round three seem to have done nothing but invigorate the Devils fire with a 46 point upset over Brunwick. From the first kick to the last, the Devils were slick with the leather as if they were playing with a dry footy.
Familiar faces Hamilton, McKay and Logozzo’s high chemistry around the footy were a nightmare for the opposition, with the help of star Douglas who ran the sole off his boots. Structurally Brunswick found it difficult to compete. Brunswick’s usual high pressure footy couldn’t quite get going in the face of quick handballs and hungry in and under.
Overall, it was the Parkeside pressure that tilted the scoreboard in their favour, and even in the face of the Brunswick brand, the Devils were clean, disciplined and tactically sound.
Can Brunswick respond after their first blemish of the year when they tackle Aquinas next weekend? A side that’s gone L W L W across the opening month of the season.
Even in tough conditions Aquinas refused to say ‘no’ with a hard-earned victory over Old Paradians. The first quarter saw a tight race with both teams neck and neck, but the second and third was claimed by the Old Paradians.
Quick footy in the centre from the likes of Arcangel and King gave opportunity to Gough (3 Goals) and McDean (2 Goals) who capilised on their chances. Trailing by 10 points at the final change, the fourth quarter saw Aquinas storm ahead, Morrison-Story and Box provided the muchneeded support for O’Malley (3 Goals) to command the forward line.
The resilience of Bloods displays their hunger for victory and culture for passionate footy. Old Paradians will be on the lookout for their first win this coming weekend facing off against the in-form Old Yarra Cobras.
The Old Yarra Cobras brought the fire back to Koonung Park with a 63 point victory over Bulleen Templestowe.
Discontent with the loss 6 point loss against the Friars last week. The Cobras refused to allow the average conditions to impact their footy with a consistent performance from the first bounce. David Tokatliyan and Tom Bell were clever with the footy, in tandem with Nick Zappala and big Anthony Lamana on the wing.
As per usual with much opportunity from the centre, Cobra forwards did not disappoint. Raso (3 Goals), Stacker (2 Goals), Margaritas (2 Goals) and Sambevski (2 Goals) capitalised on their chances with the help of Mitch Blundell’s pressure and intensity.
The Cobras have proven their ability to bounce back with no mercy and they’re sure-fire to bring their fangs to Old Paradians this week.

After a 0-2 start, MHSOB have got their momentum back with a second hard fought win against a talented South Melbourne Districts. William Suhr had a blinder of a game putting his body on the line when it mattered most.
Mitchell Wilson and Julian Eimutis brought tough physicality against the usual Swans flair, that provided much opportunity. Pristine Petro Pirozek (4 Goals) took advantage of his accuracy in the forward line, with the help of William Hellier (3 Goals) and Matty Pereira (3 Goals).
The Unicorns fought a consistent brand of footy in all four quarters offering a game of high intensity and robust structure, and the MHSOB future is looking bright after being slow out of the blocks.
With the ladder starting to take shape after the opening month of footy, Whitefriars are the team to beat as we head towards the mid-season bye. The next four weeks will paint an interesting picture as to where these sides sit for the run into finals.

A game of Snakes and Animals, as the Hawks fly-high
Round 4 of VAFA showcased some thrilling matches as teams competed to climb up the ladder and stamp just a little bit of authority on the comp.
Hawthorn AFC has continued their impressive start to the season, taking care of Richmond with a 57-point victory in Round 4.
The game was evenly matched for three quarters, with Richmond keeping pace with the top-of-thetable Hawks. However, Hawthorn proved too strong in the final term, piling on 40 points to run away with the game.
Justin Raiti, Willy Meehan, and Ethan Harvey were instrumental in Hawthorn’s dominant final quarter, with the trio helping to anchor their side to an impressive win.
The Canterbury Cobras have secured their third win of the season with a hard-fought victory over Wattle Park
Both sides came into the game with similar winloss records, making for an intriguing contest. Canterbury held the upper hand for much of the match, but their inaccuracy in front of goal kept Wattle Park in the game.
In the end, the league-leading goal scorer Tommy Lowden kicked another four goals to help Canterbury over the line. For Wattle Park, Harry Davis put in a standout performance, while Newbegin Baxter continued his impressive form from the past two games.
The win sees Canterbury remain amongst the leading trio in the competition and sets them up nicely for the remainder of the season.
After the opening round loss, Elsternwick has put together three strong wins to the season with a commanding victory over Swinburne University.
Last years finalists wasted no time in putting the winless Swinburne to the sword, with Daniel Poletto running riot in the midfield. While Elsternwick could have easily won by a larger margin, their inaccuracy in front of goal kept Swinburne in the game.
The win sees Elsternwick cement their place as one of the teams to beat in the VAFA this season, while Swinburne remains the only team yet to register a win in the division.
Power House has continued their impressive run of form with a hard-fought victory over La Trobe University.
Despite trailing by just nine points at three-quarter time, La Trobe was unable to maintain their momentum, with Power House steamrolling to a 30-point victory in the final term.

Inaccuracy was not an issue for either side, but Power House’s superior finishing proved the difference in the end. The win sees the House join Canterbury, Elsternwick and Hawthorn as the leading trio in the competition, with all three sides sitting on three wins and one loss for the season.
The victory reinforces Power House’s status as one of the teams to beat this season, while La Trobe will be left to regroup ahead of their next match.
Round 4 has given us a glimpse of what the rest of the season holds. With several teams jostling for position, we can expect some fierce competition and intense matches in the weeks to come.

The Bulls continue their undefeated run as Masala wins a spicy contest
The first match of the round saw Box Hill North take on Masala in what was forecast to be the game of the round and that it well and truly was.
The Demons got the early jump over the Tigers kicking five goals in the first quarter whilst keeping the Tigers to two goals to take a handy 16-point lead into the first break. The second quarter saw Masala fight their way back into the game kicking four goals in a hard-fought 30 minutes of footy to bring the margin back to a solitary point at the main change.
At three quarter time, after a tight third term the Demons held a slim 4-point lead. Masala put together a proper spicy quarter of football in the final stanza, with some of their best form. A six-goal stampede saw the Tigers running out winners in one of the best games of the season.
Masala’s best against the Demons include Sean Downes, Jake Dunkley and Luke Decarne. The best for the Demons were Joshua Chivers, David Edwards and Jerome Tennison. Sean Downes took over up forward with six goals. Teammates James Dekel and Declan Fowler also added to the tally with 2 goals each.
Blake Williams kicked three goals for the Demons. Other goal scorers include Jyidin Williams (2), Jake Dullard (2) and Jameson Sterling Falzon (2).
Masala will now head back home to take on Eley Park whilst the Demons will face another tough task when they make the trip down to North Brunswick.
The weather over the Friday and Saturday made Tatterson Park a difficult venue to score on for St Johns and North Brunswick. Like much of the round, it became very scrappy affair early on.
North Brunswick got a good head start over the JOCs kicking three opening quarter goals whilst keeping their opposition scoreless. The second term saw the Bulls continue to add on the scoreboard pressure with 10 scoring shots, however, this only translated to 2 goals and 8 behinds.
The JOCs were able to kick their first goal but they still faced a challenge, being down by 35 points with a half to go. Heading into the final quarter up by six goals, the Bulls had control of the game but in another scrappy quarter, both teams struggled to hit the scoreboard with the only goal of the quarter being a single Bulls goal.
In the end, it was the Bulls that ran out winners by 43 points, continuing their winning streak in what was a tough and hard-fought game for both sides.
Benjamin Ayache and Michael Horton were the goalscorers for the JOCs. Jareth Ombiga was the only multiple goal-kicker for the game with 2 goals for the Bulls.
Other goalkickers for the Bulls included Ashley Rae and Luke Russell. The best for the JOCs were Brendan Ash, Daniel Cattolico and Corey Ely whilst the best for the Bulls were Samuel Watt, Zac Dicianni and Adam Tsardakis. St Johns will look to get back to their winning ways as they host Albert Park in a must-win game.
The Bulls will host Box Hill North, a team that will really test them.
Eley Park and Albert Park did battle in a game where both sides needed a win. The Falcons got off to a dominant start kicking six goals whilst keeping the Sharks goalless to take a 39-point lead into the first break. The second quarter saw the Falcons continue to step on the accelerator adding another five goals to their tally. Opening up a 60-point lead at half-time, an almost insurmountable lead to overcome in a half is a challenging task for anyone.
The third quarter saw the Falcons continue their ways and remove any chance of a comeback by the Sharks with another elite quarter kicking six goals which saw the margin on the scoreboard open up to 96 points.
In the end, it was Albert Park that finished with a dominant 104-point victory, the second biggest of the season so far.
The best for the Sharks were Will Male, Jacob Rose and Zachary Hayes. The best for the Falcons were Ashley Evans, Jack Lee and Zak Knight. Tom Johnston controlled up forward for the Sharks with 4 majors.
Other Sharks goal-kickers were Alex Penkethman, Drew Crawford and Ben Ferguson. Jack Lee continues to be a problem for every opposition as he had another day out with 8 goals. Ashley Evans also added 6 goals for the Falcons taking his average to 5.5 goals a game.
The Sharks will now make the trip to North Dandenong to take on the in-form Masala whilst Albert Park will take on St Johns in what should be the match of the round.

MILESTONES
Tate Spiteri (La Trobe University)
VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Congratulations to La Trobe’s Tate Spiteri on reaching 50 games – Tate first joined the ‘Trobers in 2017 and made his senior debut in Round 4. Spitta returned in 2019 after a season in the Ovens & Murray League and has been a regular senior player since returning. An elusive and damaging forward, he has provided plenty of headaches for opposition defenders and was a key member of our 2022 senior men’s premiership side kicking 44 goals during the season. Well done Spitta on your 50 games in the red & black!
Tom Blenheim (Old Scotch)
Congratulations to Tom Blenheim on reaching 50 games for Old Scotch Football Club. Tom joined the club from Scotch College in 2017, playing two years in the under 19s, including the 2018 Grand Final. Tom broke into the Men’s 1st XVIII in 2019, playing in the Grand Final team. Tom has played there since and is an integral member of the 2023 team. We wish Tom all the best on reaching this milestone. 50

Jen Males (De La Salle)
Jen is in her 6 th season at De La and notching up game 50 this weekend is a great effort. Having been Captain and part of our Leadership group, Jen is a valued and important member of the “Guns”. Featuring in the best players 19 times in her 49 games so far is also a great accomplishment. We wish her all the best this weekend in our BCNA Mother’s Day clash vs Preston Bullants.
William
Balme (Kew FC)
Congratulations to Kew Football Club legend William Balme on reaching 150 games for the club. ‘Balmey’ arrived at the club at the start of 2011 and made an immediate impact both on and off the field with his dash from half back and his warm and affectionate personality. On the field, Balmey quickly became a crucial cog in the senior team’s backline and was able to consistently lock down key forwards across the competition. Balmey is a 4-time Premiership Player! In 2023, Balmey has undertaken a playing-assistant coach role in our Men’s Thirds; a crucial role in mentoring the next generation of Bears. Off the field, William established the ‘Out of The Woods’ program, which has helped the Club provide support and education to members of the Kew FC community in the vital mental health space. A heart and soul contributor in every sense of the word.
Daniel Adams (Ivanhoe AFC)
150
Ivanhoe AFC congratulates evergreen reserves defender Daniel Adams on his 150 th game in Round 4 (May 6). A natural leader with a great work ethic on and off the field, Dan was reserves co-captain for several seasons including 2015 when the Hoers won a Division 2 reserves premiership. In 2010, Dan was acknowledged with the best clubman award for his ongoing role in recruiting quality trainers and providing blue ribbon physiotherapy services. He was also awarded life membership in 2018. Love your work. You’re the man Dan!

The Battle of Beach Road: Old Brighton topple St. Bedes/Mentone
Winter is coming. The first weekend of May delivered blistering cold conditions across Melbourne. The long sleeves were dusted off as 10 of the VAFA’s most exciting young teams battled it out. Every team bar one has registered two wins thus far.
Round 4 presented some convincing victories as injuries, fatigue, and formlines begin to manifest.
Old Brighton def. St. Bedes/Mentone Tigers by 83 points
After a strong start to the season, St. Bedes/Mentone were only able to register one goal the entire morning. In what was a bleak affair, SBMT seemed as if they didn’t show up. They’ll look to put that one behind them and reinvigorate themselves for round 5.
Though it is worth mentioning that five of St. Bedes’ most promising U19 players interestingly featured in their seniors on the weekend, a promising sign for the next generation of Tigers.
Old Brighton defended their fortress in tremendous fashion. The windy chill off Brighton Beach didn’t stop the the Tonners from slotting 15 majors. This may prove to be the dominant win that jumpstarts their season.
Travers, T. Howden, T. Marriott, L. Mccluskey & J. Lohan were the best afield for the prevailing Tonners. Kai Dimattina slotted a quarter of the team’s overall score with four goals.
SBMT will look to capitalise on the struggling St. Bernards in RD5. Old Brighton will host the University Blues at home.
University Blues def by. St. Kevins by 28 points.
SKOB took their third win of the season and now sit at the top of the U19 Premier ladder. The club placed an emphasis on their top level U19s prior to this season, ensuring they were going to challenge the top tier of the competition.
So far they’ve shown tremendous improvement on the back of a few leaner seasons. SKOB were able to lock down in the second half, only conceding two points to the opposition.
Uni are now one of seven teams who sit 2-2 on the season. They’ve shown glimpses of class and will look to build upon that moving forward. Though they’ve posted some low scores thus far and will need to focus on converting their opportunities.
Ryan, T. O’Brien, C. Kays, J. Kearns, O. Clifford & T. Ingram were judged the best afield for Uni. Whilst N. Tonge, S. Jones, J. Romanin, B. Bryan & O. Doyle were all superb for the winning side.
Uni will face an in-form Old Brighton this weekend. St. Kevins will host De La Salle at T H King Oval.
Old Xaverians def. St Bernards by 67 points.
St. Bernards now find themselves 0-4 in U19 Premier. They didn’t register a score in the second half and conceded nearly 100 points yet again. They’ll desperately attempt to regroup this week in order to save the season before it’s too late.
Old Xavier brought solid effort throughout and walked away with a hard-fought victory. They currently sit second on the ladder and
received a nice percentage boost from this contest. It’s no secret they intend to go back-to-back, uncompromising wins like this will only aid in that quest.
Will Exell and Charlie Ralph combined for 4 majors for the Xavs. Whilst T. Basile, D. Gilham, S. Guida, T. Lowrie, J. Rendelmann & F. Shannon did all they could to try secure St. Bernards their first win of 2023.
St. Bernards will host SBMT at home in RD4. Xavs will go up against Williamstown CYMS.
Old Scotch def. De La Salle by 19 points. Two very evenly matched teams tussled it out at Camberwell Sports Ground on Saturday afternoon.
Scotch entered the match with a point to prove, narrowly losing to SBMT in RD3. They led for most of the contest, Harry Robenstone again proved vital, scoring five majors. They’re now 2-2 but are a very capable side.
De La proved a tough competitor but weren’t quite able to prevail. Their form has slightly slumped since their opening two victories of the season. They’ll reassess and adjust their personnel up forward.
Torey-Toth, S. Filipovic, P. Russell, J. Stewart, J. Miller & J. Pickles were stand outs for De La Salle.
De La will clash with an in-form St. Kevins this coming Saturday. Scotch will face Caulfield at home.
Williamstown CYMS def. Caulfield Grammarians by 46 points.
Caulfield couldn’t come back from their sluggish first half. They scored seven points whilst their opponent notched up 7.7. They got themselves back into the contest later in the game, but it was simply too late. These teams shouldn’t be 46 points in difference. Williamstown utilised their home deck to a tee. The wet and windy environment didn’t halt their goal kicking haul whatsoever. The CY’s showcased a unified and cohesive team performance. Aiden Williams was judged best afield with five majors for the day.
Fraser, J. Iverson, L. Bevis, J. Atkinson, H. Mcinerney & J. Wallace were all admirable in a losing side.
Williamstown will travel to face the Old Xavierans. Caulfield will look to bounce back against Old Scotch.
