PLAY4BCNA x VAFA | Breast Cancer Network Australia
We all understand the true power of sport. It’s so much more than what happens on the court, the water, the track, or the field. At its core it’s about the strength of community and the importance of connection.
That community and connection is reflected vividly in Breast Cancer Network Australia’s (BCNA) relationship with Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA), which began when we started “pinking up” together over a decade ago. I could never have imagined how deep our connection was to become, nor the heights of the remarkable milestones we would go on to achieve together.
Since 2021 we have raised over $75,000 with 25 clubs participating in the PLAY4BCNA Round annually. Our partnership has brought families, clubs, and league leaders and communities closer together. It has allowed BCNA to continue to be here to provide a voice, connection, and support to those who need it. This offer of support includes not only those who receive a breast cancer diagnosis, but extends to cover their family, friends, and carers as well.
Kirsten Pilatti Chief Executive Officer Breast Cancer Network Australia• Offer practical SUPPORT before asking how you can help. Think about something specific you can do, whether it›s mowing the lawn, picking up groceries, or cooking a meal. Small acts of support can really ease their burden.
• Take the time to really UNDERSTAND what might be going on for your loved one. BCNA’s newly refreshed website offers excellent information around how treatment might impact them, what life after treatment might look like, or how living with incurable cancer differs from early breast cancer.
At its core it’s about the strength of community and the importance of connection.
This is why our partnership with the VAFA demonstrates so perfectly that we achieve so much more than the vibrant fanfare – the pink out on the grounds or the dollar amount raised. Play4BCNA has transformed your weekly sporting events into heartfelt displays of solidarity and support. The VAFA’s endorsement of the PLAY4BCNA round during May exemplifies each clubs unwavering commitment to leverage your playing grounds for genuine social good.
Many of you have known Vicki Durston as a Director of the VAFA since April 2022. What you may not know is that in her day job Vicki plays a key role in ensuring our network is best placed to support all those affected by breast cancer.
Here are some top tips for supporting someone you love with cancer:
• They don’t expect you to have all the answers. Spending time just LISTENING can make all the difference.
I’d like to add that simply by supporting BCNA you are making a powerful statement – showing you are there, that you are willing to show up, and that there is a whole community rallying around.
As we look ahead to the 2024 PLAY4BCNA Round, let us reaffirm our commitment to community, compassion, and mateship. On the hallowed grounds of each VAFA club, where the roar of the crowd echoes the strength of solidarity, pull on your PLAY4BCNA pink socks and find not only the spirit of competition but also the boundless potential for positive change. Together, let us play for a cause greater than ourselves, honouring the resilience, courage, and hope that define those affected by breast cancer, and the love and generosity shown by the individuals and communities that support them.
If you or someone you know is diagnosed with breast cancer you can call our Helpline on 1800 500 258. The Helpline provides compassionate and practical support to over 10,000 people every year, including family and friends of those diagnosed.
BCNA are here to support, every step of the way.

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER
Early season gridlock in William Buck Premier Men’s
Percentage alone separates third through eighth on the Premier Men’s ladder after the opening month, with six of the ten teams locked together on 2 wins, highlighting the evenness of the 2024 season.
Old Brighton remain a game clear on top after a comfortable 47-point win over Fitzroy at Brighton Beach Oval.
The Roys booted the opening goal, but the Tonners were never headed from that point onwards, kicking 5 of the next 6 goals in what turned out to be a high scoring first half. Fitzroy remained within striking distance until midway through the second term until 3 goals in 4.5 minutes saw Old Brighton kick away.
Their 35-point half-time lead extended to 51 at the last change, before the Roys finished with 3 goals to 1 to slightly reduce the final margin.
Old Brighton are a perfect 4-0 for the second straight season and have won 14 of 16 games in their last 4 opening months of footy!
Marcel Bruin (Old Brighton): “A bit of a patchy performance and we were a bit unclean but great to get another win. Will Lewis with 7 goals and Jordy Segar were really impressive up forward and Hamish Dick has been super in a hybrid role.
It was fantastic that we were able to unite with Fitzroy and take a moment to acknowledge the ongoing crisis of violence against women.”
Travis Ronaldson (Fitzroy): “We came up against a good opponent and had some good periods of play but not enough to get the job done. We need to continue to be aggressive with our ball movement and make our opponents react and defend us.
Anthony Johnson and Miles Nelson – two of our young midfielders – worked hard and competed all day, while Jack McKay provided a good tall target around the ground.”
St Kevin’s has jumped up to outright second after extending its lead at every change to ultimately run out 50-point winners over Old Melburnians at TH King Oval.
OM’s got a flyer with the opening goal before SKOB settled into the game and slammed on 8 of the next 9 goals to career away to a handy lead. OM’s kicked 3 of the last 4 goals in the first half to pull the margin back to 24 points at half time, and when Adam RICHARDSON booted the opening goal of the third term, it was a 3-goal game and OM’s looked to be back in the contest.
But SKOB quashed the resistance with a powerful 21-minute burst that netted them 6 goals and blew the game wide open.
2 goals apiece in the final term saw St Kevin’s cruise to a big win, led by 5 goals from Patrick Kerr.
Anthony Lynch (St Kevins): “We spoke about the opportunity to respond to a poor performance – well, we couldn’t have been more pleased with our four-quarter effort.
It was our most even team performance for the year and again the most positive part was we debuted 2 more players out of last year’s U19 group.
The challenges don’t get any easier next week with Blues at Uni Oval, so we will need that even team contribution again.”
Paul Satterly (Old Melburnians): “We were soundly beaten in all areas. Full credit to SKOBS and how they applied themselves to the contest.
On a positive note, we have unearthed some quality kids in Jeremy A’Beckett, Nicky Christian and Ollie Tyrer.”
An inaccurate Old Scotch has slipped to third after having 8 more scoring shots but falling 7 points short of University Blues at Camberwell.
The Cardinals peppered away in the first half, generating opportunities but headed to the main break just 5 points up, having kicked 3.8 to 3.3.
And it only got more frustrating for Old Scotch with another 1.6 in the third term – the Blues adding 4.2 to take a 9-point lead to the final change, before kicking the first two goals of the last quarter to open up what looked to be a match-winning 21-point lead at the 15-minute mark.
But – as they did against Collegians last week – the Cardinals refused to yield, booting 3 goals in 4.5 minutes to storm back into the game.
Just 1 point separated the two teams until the most influential man on the ground, James Stewart, kicked his fifth goal at the 29-minute mark to hand the Blues a hard-fought 7-point win.
Guy Martyn (Uni Blues): “Saturday was another example of how even and strong the competition is. Both sides had periods of momentum and the result could’ve gone either way.
Overall, I was happy with our ability to halt Scotch’s rapid ball movement and force them long down the line.
James Stewart put on a dominant display with his pack marking and goal-kicking – emphasised by his match winning mark/goal.
Special mention to Nick Conway, who was our sole key defender for the day after two withdrawals on Friday night. I was extremely happy with how he and the rest of the backline stepped up.”
Mark Gnatt (Old Scotch): “We had plenty of good scoring opportunities, however, we were unable to convert. We had the ascendancy through the midfield and were able to connect better with our forwards this week, which was pleasing.
Will Clark was brilliant in the ruck and went forward in the last quarter, kicking two vital goals that almost won us the game. Brodie Easton and Charlie Cormack continued their strong start to the season. And the skipper, Andy Jelbart led from the front again with a solid performance.”
Reigning premiers Collegians have posted back-toback victories after overcoming a slow start to get the better of Old Xaverians at Toorak Park.
Xavs had 8 scoring shots to 3 to lead by 10 points at the opening change, before the Lions found their groove in the second term, booting 4 goals to 1 to head to the major break with an 11-point advantage.
Goals were hard to come by in the third term with just 3 in total as Collegians edged their way to a 19-point lead. The defensive struggle continued into the last term until Ben Darrou – one of the great comeback stories of the season so far – kicked his third & fourth goals to put the result beyond doubt.
Jordie McKenzie (Collegians): “It was a spirited win. With a slow start and one of our prime movers injured, the boys dug deep from quarter time and produced our brand of footy. Our pressure was a highlight, and we played large chunks of the game in our forward half.
Ben Darrou provided a terrific contest all day and got his reward. Scott Belby and Will Pewtress were instrumental down back, and the midfield group lead by Jim Bazzani produced a great 4 quarter effort.”
Dan Donati (Old Xavs): “It was a tightly contested game for most of the day. I thought we failed to execute early when we had momentum, and as the game went on, we didn’t take the chances on offer to be right in it at the end.
Full credit to Collegians, who brought the pressure and used the outside lanes well all day. They’re a quality team who in the end deserved the win.”
St Bernards got the jump on University Blacks at Melbourne Uni Oval, booting 2 goals in the opening 4 minutes, before Blacks stabilised the situation and eventually got the game on their terms to kick 9 of the next 11 goals and hold a commanding 33-point half-time lead.
It was 4 goals apiece in an entertaining third term, as the Snowdogs strived to get back into the game.
Two Blacks goals early in the last quarter blew their lead out to 47 points, before St Bernards kicked the last 5 of the game to reduce the margin to a far more respectable 18 points.
Uni Blacks with back-to-back wins, setting up a fascinating clash with Collegians this coming weekend.
Dale Bower (Uni Blacks): “We played some great patches of great footy. We were able to improve our ability to move the footy effectively. It was great to get the 4 points against a team that was in pretty good form.”
Steve Alessio (St Bernards): “They were much cleaner than us around the stoppages and spread and moved the ball well all day.
Our boys battled hard even though things weren’t going their way. Our last quarter effort was pleasing and gives us something to work with going into this week’s game back at the SnakePit in front of our home crowd.”

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER WOMEN’S
It’s a close race in Premier Women’s competition with St Kevin’s and Old Scotch leading the pack
Old Scotch and St Kevin’s are yet to drop a game this season, while the ladder reflects a very healthy competition in William Buck Premier Women’s. The competitive spirit is alight on the footy field and players are well and truly hitting the scoreboard to produce bigger margins consistently. Three of five matches were won by 40+ points over the weekend, with Collegians delivering the greatest victory against the Old Yarra Cobras.
Round 4 kicked off at Glen Huntly Park where reigning Premiers St Kevin’s travelled to play the evercompetitive Caulfield Grammarians. Despite the inherent challenge and nerves that come with taking on the defending champs, Caulfield are producing some good football early on looking to compete right through to finals. They are currently at 2-2 for the season, being bested only by last year’s two Grand Finalists in Kew and SKOB.
On a cold and foggy morning, things took some time to warm up, with a single goal each way to quarter time. The ever-reliable St Kevin’s rallied from then on to make an impact on the scoreboard and keep their opponents from registering another score until the final term. It was too little too late for Caulfield, but it was star forward Serena Kuo who finished with her sides 2 goals for the day.
Hannah Smith had her best day out yet for SKOB in front of the big sticks, kicking 5 goals to put her well ahead on the leading goal kicker talley. Joining her in the best was Sarah Cameron and Emily Condon who both put in strong performances.
A goalless Kew Bears felt the wrath of a strong Old Scotch side who are storming through the competition this season. Even the best sides can have tough days and Kew just couldn’t seem to get going at Victoria Park on Saturday. The left with 5 points to their name, whilst Old Scotch ran away with a final score of 53.
Mia Caffry was deemed best afield for the Stars, ably accompanied by Maggie Wilson and Ella Crump, with their 7 goals coming from 5 different goal scorers. At the other end, Amelia Dawborn and former league Best & Fairest Dakota Villiva were best on for the Bears on a tough day. This was Kew’s first loss for the season, as the Stars continue to fly through the competition undefeated.
As the fog cleared and the sun shone down at Harry Trott Oval in the favoured 2pm timeslot, Collegians hosted the Old Yarra Cobras. The Cobras seemed to have the upper hand early, winning the first quarter 138. But a scoreless second and third terms opened the door for Collegians to have their say on the scoreboard.
Georgia Harris was a master in front of goals with 4 majors to her name while Roxy Beuzeville and Paris Rafferty each kicked 2. Teammate Zara Wilson was best on for Collegians and Erin Woodford led her side when they were up against it. At the final siren Collegians were ahead by a significant 43 points (6219) and will be looking to carry their momentum into next round when they come up against Coburg.
West Brunswick and Coburg are two sides that seem to be fairly evenly matched with past encounters proving close. Coburg was victorious on both occasions that these two sides met in 2023, but it was West Brunswick who got the chocolates on the weekend in their first victory over Coburg, 53-33.
The period scores were not available at the time of writing but what is confirmed is that Kristy De Pellegrini of West Brunswick was the only goal scorer to have multiples goals for the afternoon. Clare Balbata and Taylah Watson were acknowledged as the best afield for the Westies in their second win of the season, as Sheridan Bennett and Amy Duguid were stand out performers for the Lions.
Rounding out the weekend, the matchup between Monash Blues and MUWFC at Frearson Oval proved the closest of the lot will the final scoreboard reading 22-36 in favour of the visitors. Monash looked to have the advantage for much of the day with their pressure around the ground and ability to hit the scoreboard. Despite their strong form they were unable to capitalise to secure their first win of the season, with MUW coming over the top with a 3-goal final term to charge home with the victory.
Asha Price had all the answers with 4 goals to her name for MUWFC and has climbed into equal second on the leading goal kicker tally, while Georgia Nicholas was best afield for the victors. The Monash leadership stood up, with Vice Captain Chloe Gibson making an impression around the ground and with a goal, while Alice McGinty also starred.
Some exciting matchups are on the horizon in the Premier Women’s competition, with the round kicking off bright and early at Victoria Park as Kew take on the Old Yarra Cobras; a match both sides will be hungry to win coming off significant losses. St Kevin’s will have home ground advantage against MUWFC, while Monash Blues will travel to take on Old Scotch. Coburg will host Collegians, while the match of the round could take place at McAllister Oval as West Brunswick go head-to-head with Caulfield Grammarians, both sides looking for their third win of the season.

PREMIER B MEN’S
Paddy GrindlayOld Ivanhoe survive Trinity scare to take top spot
Old Ivanhoe held off Old Trinity in a top-of-the-table nailbiter, surviving a Trinity shot after the siren to win by four points and take top spot by percentage.
Key midfielder for Trinity Hugo McGlashan had a shot from the boundary after the final siren to win the game, following a whirlwind final minute where Hugh Beasley’s set shot from 45 metres fell short, only for the Old Ivanhoe defence to kick the ball out of bounds on the full from the resulting contest. The final siren sounded as the umpire paid the free kick, McGlashan tasked with threading the needle from deep in the left forward pocket. Opting to snap the ball on his right foot, his kick lacked the bend and missed to the far side, handing Old Ivanhoe the victory at 6.9 (45) to 5.11 (41).
Remarkably, it’s the second straight week where Old Trinity have played in a game featuring a missed shot at an after-the-siren game-winner, following Trent Shannon’s miss for De La Salle last week - although this time, Donald McDonald’s men are on the losing side.
For Gieschen, the win is confirmation of Old Ivanhoe’s ability to mix it with the best in Premier B - ironically, only fellow-Premier C graduate Old Camberwell has bested Old Ivanhoe this season. In a high-pressure game between two disciplined clubs, key defenders Reed Jepson and Nick Riddle were outstanding, while gun on-baller Toby McLean was prominent, racking up an eyepopping 44 disposals and 24 contested possessions.
Old Haileybury’s resurgence after a 0-2 start continued in its clash with St Bedes/Mentone Tigers breaking the game open early and maintaining an early lead to run out 13.14 (92) to 5.9 (39) victors at Mentone Reserve.
Old Haileybury’s team defence and spacing constricted the Tigers in the first half, creating opportunities for intercept and turnover from which the visitors were able to convert. Daniel Ward’s chargers established a 44-point lead at the long break having held St Bede’s to just one goal, with Charlton Harrop kicking three of his four goals in the first half.
Josh Gasparini (42 disposals and 17 clearances) dominated in the middle while Brede Seccull was outstanding – SBMT coach Brad Berry taking time to praise the performance of Old Haileybury’s hard-working midfielder; “he’s a bull,” said Berry of Seccull.
After a slow start to 2024 Old Haileybury have found form in what promises to be a desperately close season, now sitting fifth on the ladder. The Tigers took their 2024 debutant tally to 12, with another three players running out at senior level for St Bedes / Mentone for the first time (Harvey Gleeson, Bailey Berry and Kyah Farris-White).
Melbourne fans and keen track-watchers would’ve noticed Demons Category B rookie Kyah Farris-White’s name appear
on the St Bede’s / Mentone team sheet - the 206cm basketball convert racking up 58 hitouts, 19 disposals and 11 clearances as first ruck.
Coach Brad Berry was full of praise for the Demon-turned-Tiger: “Kyah was fantastic. We’re really proud as a club to be a part of his journey. An impressive young man…we just love that he’s come and invested himself at St Bede’s / Mentone.”
Caulfield Grammarians’ habit of playing in tight, tense affairs has continued - although Guy McKenna’s men will walk away from Banksia Reserve enthused after holding on to a win against Beaumaris. Trailing at the final break, Caulfield kicked two goals to take the lead, before a goal at the 30-minute mark from the Sharks saw the margin ratcheted back to just two points with mere moments to play.
To the Grammarians’ delight, Jono Moren hauled down a contested grab between wing and half back as Beaumaris pushed forward, the siren sounding to confirm an 11.10 (76) to 10.14 (74) road win. In an indicator of Premier B’s evenness, Caulfield are yet to play in a game decided by more than 12 points and, fittingly, sit at an even 2-2 ledger. “We’ve got a fairly young squad, but they’re learning from senior players who are guiding them through rough water,” McKenna said.
There was a touch of musical chairs to the Grammarians’ line-up: Harvey Dawson was capable in the ruck with Oliver Ruddick absent while defender Ingo Dammersmith was thrown forward with Archie Loughnan out of the side. Josh Hutchings booted three goals while Dylan Ting dominated, finding the footy frequently and kicking three goals of his own.
Beaumaris coach Josh Bourke was impressed with the work of Riley Mihailovic, while Nate Dear kicked three goals. 18-year-old Ted Clayton, listed at the Sandringham Dragons, was impressive again in just his third senior game - but on an unfortunate note for the Sharks, they’ll be without skipper Callum Linehan for next week’s clash with Old Ivanhoe due to a hip injury.
De La Salle side was given a massive scare by Williamstown CYMS at Fearon Reserve, who stunned De La with a white-hot beginning to the second half after a tightly contested first hour. With De La leading by 17 points at the long break, CYs goals to Rohan Diwell, Zac Provest and Bradley Tucker saw the home side snatch the lead early in the quarter, before De La was stung into action, piling on six third term goals in quick time and asserting dominance.
From there it was smoother sailing, De La Salle running out winners, 16.16 (112) to 7.17 (59), thanks in part to seven goals from Nathan Scollo. “It was his lick of the ice cream (this week),” said Hyland on Monday, referring to the dangerous one-two combo in the De La forward line of Scollo (17 goals this season) and Adrian Indovino (12 goals this season).
While CYs coach Con Terzoglou will take plenty of positives from his side’s punchiness, he’d like to see more consistency. “Full credit to (De La) for being able to withstand the pressure and then reverse things to put us on the back foot,” he said.
Old Geelong rounded out Round 4 by breaking away from Old Camberwell in the final quarter at Como Park, holding Anson Brownless’ men goalless in the final quarter to win 9.10 (64) to 6.12 (48). The contest between talented rucks Jack Sheridan and Gus Milham is worth a watch - Milham’s 38 hitouts may have edged out Sheridan’s 37, but Brownless gave the points to Old Geelong’s big man. “He dominated all day…he’s just a class act. He wasn’t keen on sharing it with us!” said Brownless. “They’re always hard to beat at home, Geelong.”
The Grammarians held a slender lead to three quarter time but despite recording as many inside 50s (nine) as Old Geelong in the final term conceded three goals to none, two to Harrison Kol and one to Mickey Nicholls putting paid to the match. Kol, who has enjoyed a ripping start to 2024, was called out by coach Nathan Brown as one of his side’s best. “He’s been a super player - a wonderful young kid, he’s got speed to burn and wherever we play him, he gives us enormous run and carry,” Brown said on Monday.
William Horsfall (37 disposals, 12 marks) and Tim Jones (31 disposals, 12 clearances) found plenty of the ball in a game where Old Geelong won the disposal count 401-294 - but it’s likely the +11 in the clearance column that will please Nathan Brown. “Our contest work was awesome and got better as the game went on,” he said. Premier B leading goalkicker Harry Laukens booted two for Old Camberwell.
This weekend, De La Salle host Old Haileybury in a match of the round contender at Waverley Oval, with Daniel Ward’s men on a two-game winning run and keen to prove their slow start as a mere hiccup. Beaumaris will take on the ladder-leading Old Ivanhoe at Banksia Reserve, while Old Camberwell will look to snap a two-game losing streak when they host Old Trinity. Old Geelong face St Bedes / Mentone at Como Park, while Williamstown CYMS will visit Caulfield Grammarians.

PREMIER B WOMEN’S
Kylie LynchOld Geelong and Williamstown CYMS keep their undefeated title
Round 4 of the Prem B Women’s saw both Old Geelong and Williamstown CYMS remain the only two teams in the comp to be undefeated, but with the two sides going head-to-head next weekend, one will rise to the top, one game clear. The top four all registered wins on the weekend in percentage boosting victories.
Westbourne Grammarians looked promising against Old Geelong in the first quarter with a 2-point lead after Temeika Cathery and Stephanie Fomekong kicked a goal apiece. However, Old Geelong’s strong defence put an end to Westbourne’s scoring tally quickly in the second quarter and prevented them from kicking another goal for the remainder of the game, bringing the final score to 6.10 (46) to 2.5 (17).
Westbourne co-coach Ian Allan says that the first four weeks of Westbourne’s run in the VAFA Prem B women’s comp has been an enjoyable challenge for his young side. “We are very new to the VAFA, so are taking baby steps. We aren’t looking at the wins and losses – we set goals each week and the girls are achieving them…the wins will eventually come. It’s a marathon, not a sprint in football,” says Coach Allan.
This up-and-coming side has faced some of the top teams in the first four rounds, which has allowed them to get a good feel for standard in the competition.
Matilda Arthur and Sophie Batten were key to Old Geelong’s success, kicking 2 goals each. Annabel Rafferty and Issy Tucker were also dominant players throughout the match, earning them a spot in the best players for Old Geelong.
Over at Manson Reserve, Aquinas hosted St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers in what turned out to be a close match. After a significant loss to Old Geelong in Round 3, Aquinas entered this game with fire in their belly and looking for some redemption.
“We were keen to move on and happy to put a line through last week. We were well beaten by a fantastic side, we knew we needed to be much better heading into this week,” says Aquinas coach Jacob Kogelman.
Meg Dargan proved to be a standout performer, kicking 2 goals, and being named best afield for Aquinas. Niamh Sanders and Sophie Braunthal also had an impressive game for Aquinas and were amongst the best three.
However, St Bedes/Mentone proved to be too strong, cementing a two-goal lead and bringing the final score to 7.8 (50) to 5.4 (34) in their favour. The trusty boot of Isabella Gietzmann saw her kicking three goals and being named amongst the best players for St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers, along with Olivia Steinfort and Paris Xerri.
“We are building a nice rivalry with St Bedes, they are a side we have so much respect for and the weekend’s game was a really good spectacle. They are always great contests, and they were too good for us on this occasion,” says Kogelman.
Fitzroy took on Beaumaris at Peterson Oval in what proved to be a low-scoring match up until the fourth quarter, when Fitzroy put the foot down and kicked four goals to seal the deal at 5.3 (33) to 1.3 (9).
Fitzroy coach Nathan Jumeau said the team played another great defensive game, though is still yet to get the offensive side of their game right. “We started very slow, but once we got our connection to the forward line, we were able to put it on the scoreboard,” says Jumeau.
Five players who kicked goals for Fitzroy, showcasing the depth of skill across the team. Standout performers included Lauren Atkinson, Georgina Bennett, and Steph Pitt, who were named in the top three for Fitzroy.
Beaumaris led the match right up until the end when Fitzroy converted four goals in the fourth quarter. Beaumaris coach Darryl Behrendorff said he was really proud of the effort of the whole team and that it was a big improvement on last week’s performance. Our focus for the week is to continue to build on the key aspects of our game that we are working hard to develop and make sure we have some fun along the way.”
From the opening bounce, the undefeated Williamstown CYMS displayed their offensive dominance over Mazenod and proved why they have been a powerhouse this season. Key goal kickers Olivia McGie and Sofi Georgas showcased their scoring abilities with a tally of
three goals each. Despite Mazenod’s resilient defence, which forced Williamstown to settle for 14 behinds, they couldn’t contain the relentless offensive pressure from the CYMS, who finished the game with a staggering 73-point lead of 11.14 (80) to 1.1 (7).
As the season progresses, all eyes will undoubtedly remain fixed on Williamstown CYMS and Old Geelong as they continue their undefeated streak. However, one team will lose their undefeated status this weekend as they go head-tohead at Loft Reserve.
Old Geelong coach Jack Crameri expresses his excitement for the match ahead and admits that selection will be tough this week. “We’re super excited for the challenge that Williamstown will present this coming weekend. It’s going to be a cracking game. No doubt that selection will be tough, but we’ll attempt to put together a side that will give us the best chance on the weekend,” says Crameri.
Round 5 kicks off with Aquinas hosting Fitzroy as they search for their second win of the season. Mazenod will travel to Mentone Reserve to face St Bedes/Mentone Tigers in what will be a tough match up.
Westbourne Grammarians are just settling into Prem B Women’s, while Beaumaris are seasoned veterans in the VAFA Women’s competition, coming off a 2023 Premiership. This match up is sure to be one to watch this weekend as the two come head-to-head for the first time, looking to work their way up the ladder.

AJAX and Old Carey hit the accelerator as Premier C heats up
Normality returned to Premier C in Round 4 with some more modest results, notwithstanding AJAX and Old Carey who blitzed their oppositions in big victories.
AJAX had a comprehensive 83-point victory over Glen Eira/Old McKinnon at Princes Park. This contest saw a former Premier B side go up against a side promoted from Division 1 last year, so the Gryphons knew they were in for a challenge. Both sides commemorated Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) in a ceremony before the game to acknowledge victims of the Holocaust.
The first ball was then bounced at two o’clock and AJAX had a positive start with a healthy 14-point lead at quarter-time. The Gryphons could not match AJAX’s fast scoring, going on to dominate the second and third terms, however there were some positives for the Gryphons who won the final term with a 4-goal haul.
In his 200 th game, AJAX’s Richie Simon dominated, kicking 6 goals to put himself comfortably ahead in the competitions leading goalkicker tally; whilst Toby Sheezel had 4 of his own and Adam Caplan and Benji Krongold contributed 2 each.
Kane Nissenbaum and Brad Caplan put in strong performances to earn themselves a spot in the best for the Jackas, and their opponents Stuart Carey and Joel Ludik were amongst the best players for the Gryphons, alongside Ben Reid who had 3 majors for the game.
Old Carey had a successful day out, defeating PEGS by 92 points. PEGS were always going to have their work cut out for them to defeat this Old Carey side who have started in blazing form, and this indeed proved to be true as Old Carey dominated from siren to siren.
PEGS were left scoreless in the first quarter thanks to some forward line brilliance from Old Carey. Old Carey continued to build their lead, going into half-time 65 points up, and well and truly kept the momentum going with seven goals in the last quarter.
Old Carey shared the goals around with five majors to Trent Warren and three each to Lachy Godden and Jed
Rule, amongst others. Jamieson Jarvis, Scott Whillas and Oscar Bales had a good day for PEGS in what was a tough match for the away side.
Marcellin travelled to Gerry Green Reserve to play the Parkdale Vultures in which the Vultures won by 48 points. Parkdale’s inaccuracy in the first quarter cost them dearly, scoring one goal and eight behinds compared with Marcellin’s four goals straight.
Parkdale’s accuracy improved as they hit the lead later in the match, but their winning margin could’ve been much greater. Ex-AFL player Mitch Brown had a fantastic outing for Parkdale, booting ten majors. Marcellin could still leave with their heads held high, having been the better team throughout the first half, and some good individual performances, notably captain Lachlan Rush, and four goals from James May, however it simply wasn’t enough against this strong Parkdale side.
Despite a good first quarter, Mazenod lost to the Hampton Rovers by 43 points at Central Reserve. Mazenod had a 22-point lead at quarter time, however in the second quarter the Rovers showed everyone why they have been the team to beat, piling on seven goals, continuing that scoreboard pressure for the rest of the afternoon to claim victory.
Brendan Wales, Matthew Fewings and Jack Sullivan were amongst the best players for Mazenod, as were Max Coughlin, Chris Perkins, Christian Carnovale, and William Crawford who had 4 goals for the Hampton Rovers. This win sees Hampton remain undefeated and sitting in second place on the ladder, just behind AJAX on percentage.
In what was the closest game of the day in Premier C, the Monash Blues just scraped over the line against Oakleigh in a 12-point victory which gives the Blues their first win in 2024.
This was a game of back and forth, with Monash holding a slight lead at quarter time and half-time, Oakleigh breaking out in the third term, and Monash getting the job done to take the four points.
Late goals to Monash in the third and fourth quarter certainly helped them claim the win. Oakleigh’s Luke Ashen was the standout forward with four goals. The Blues will be pleased to have recorded their first victory of the season; however, they still have a lot of work to do to return to their Premier C glory days of 2022.
Oakleigh can hold their heads held high, fighting their way back into the contest with the likes of Patrick Loannidis and Harry Boontjes leading the way for their side in the Premiership quarter.
The season continues with Round 5 producing five wellmatched games that will have ramifications throughout Premier C.
Glen Eira/Old McKinnon host Oakleigh in what is a rematch of last year’s Division 1 grand final, with Oakleigh desperately looking for their first win of the season.
Monash Blues host PEGS at Frearson Oval. These two teams are similarly matched, both having just the one win on the board and looking to push towards top four spots.
Two of the strongest sides in it, Parkdale Vultures and AJAX, will come head-to-head in what promises to be a great contest. Expecting goals aplenty here.
Hampton Rovers host Old Carey in what is another clash between top four sides at the Trevor Barker Beach Oval, and Mazenod come up against Marcellin in a battle of fifth v sixth.

Community Umpiring Round
This weekend the VAFA celebrated Community Umpiring Round. Umpires are the unsung heroes of the Community Sport with over 450 VAFAUA umpires involved in the VAFA competition. The VAFA would like to thank every umpire who steps out onto the ground each round and allows football to be played, as well as everyone in the VAFA Community (clubs, players, supporters) who treat VAFA umpires with the utmost respect and make them feel included on match day.

Canterbury Pink Sports Day
Over the weekend Canterbury Football Club hosted a Pink Ladies Day to raise funds for BCNA. The Club has been touched by Breast Cancer in recent years and the ability to raise funds and continue the conversation about Breast Cancer awareness is what drives the club to host such important events. The lunch and day of football was a resounding success with $4,120 raised for BCNA while also ensuring conversations around Breast Cancer awareness were at the forefront.
300 games with the Lions for Justin Crotty
Club stalwart, Justin Crotty will be playing his 300th game at Therry Penola this weekend. Justin has been an integral part of the club for many years, consistently demonstrating his dedication, skill, and passion for the game. His commitment to Therry Penola is truly commendable and reaching the milestone of 300 games is a testament to his loyalty and love for the sport.
4 sets of brothers run out for Ormond
Last weekend Ormond FC had four sets of brothers run out for their senior side.
The Konstanty, Kennedy, Simon, and Levine brothers combine to make up a third of the team. An incredible feat for a club who champion togetherness, unity, and family.
19 goal haul for one of the JOCS
St John’s kicked 38 goals on the weekend in their match against Eley Park, 19 of which were kicked by new recruit Matthew Carnelley. In his three matches this year, Carnelley has kicked six, two and now 19 goals, in what could be the signing of the year!
FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME
Anabelle Gangi (Old Xaverians)
Women’s Rising Star Nominee
The VAFA congratulates Anabelle Gangi from Old Xaverians who has been nominated as the Round 4 Anytime Fitness Rising Star. Anabelle is a pocket rocket on the field and has hit the scoreboard in her three games played for the WOX with 2 majors on the weekend in their win over Old Camberwell/AJAX.
What the Club said:
Anabelle is playing her first year with the WOX and is a current Y12 student at Genazzano. She is part of their terrific footy program and trained with Oakleigh Chargers over the summer, narrowly missing final selection in their 2024 squad. Anabelle decided to join Old Xavs to play with her sister and friends so she could develop her skills at a competitive level and have some fun.
Anabelle is a highly skilled player with excellent game IQ and great composure under pressure. She loves kicking goals & equally enjoys setting them up for her teammates. We look forward to her playing many more games in the red & black.
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Max Milward (Prahran FC)
The VAFA congratulates Max Milward from Prahran FC, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 4. Max is averaging a goal a game having settled into the forward pocket role and scored 2 on the weekend in his side’s win over West Brunswick.
What the club said:
When it comes to role models, Prahran forward Max Milward has one of the game’s very best - former Geelong skipper, Joel Selwood. The Geelong supporter is a big fan of Selwood’s attack on the ball and describes himself as “physical small forward.’’
Milward joined the Two Blues this season arriving with new coach, his father Craige who describes his son as a footy nut. “Max has always had a real desire to get the best out of himself when it comes to his football.” said Craige.
“He was part of the Frankston VFL academy for a couple of seasons, and I think this really identified to him what was required to elevate his game to the next level. Since that experience he has developed his strength and endurance to an elite level. He looks after himself with diet and prepares for training and game day with a real focus”.

The Pirates cause an upset over the Bears, while Ormond blow away the competition
A round of hidings have given insight into who are the contenders and pretenders in Division 1. Ormond, Old Peninsula, Parkside, Prahran and UHS-VU all had convincing wins over the weekend as teams are competing to settle into a spot on the ladder.
The Old Peninsula Pirates got their second win on the board after an impressive performance over the Kew Bears by 44 points. After the Bears kicked the first goal of the match the Pirates kicked the next six leading to a 25-point buffer in the first term. The pressure from the Pirates combined with the Bears inability to defend the fast ball movement from Finn Bardolph and Rob Bambery overwhelmed the side.
The Pirates engine room proved too strong for the Bears led by Hugh Peacock, Kurt Thiele and Bailey Payze who provided great composure going inside 50. Repeat entries in the second term resulted in two outstanding goals in a minute by Pete Evans-Brumby who starred with a total of 3 goals for the game.
Meanwhile, at the start of the second half the Bears cranked up their intensity around the ball kicking the first of the third quarter. The Bears forwards though had a difficult day dealing with the likes of Killian Doyle and Ben Goates who took some important contested marks in the backline. Nick Dore was the shining light in the second half for the Bears but a down field free kick finished off by an impressive pressure forward Cooper Denton made the win a certainty for the Pirates, 130-86.
UHS-VU remain undefeated this season after taking home the chocolates once again in a 51-point victory over Preston Bullants. The first quarter was an arm wrestle between the two sides with a one-point lead to UHS-VU at quarter time. Following the quarter time break, the midfield of UHS-VU got on top thanks to the likes of Harrison Kennedy, James Healey and the great ruck craft of Liam Starzer.
Meanwhile, Thomas Boddy and Rory Howard fought hard across half-back for the Preston Bullants. It wasn’t enough though as the pressure applied around the ground overwhelmed the Bullants who only managed two goals in the second half.
UHS finished the game with a score of 12.16 (88) and will no doubt be looking to clean up their goal kicking to improve their accuracy, in order to hold their place at the top of the table.
Prahran bounced back on the weekend with a 47-point win over the West Brunswick Magpies. It was a scrappy affair in the first half with only three goals kicked by the two sides as Prahran were unable to find space in their forward half. Inventive forward Taylor Bamford is becoming quite a threat for opposition teams and helped open the game up with his brilliant four goals.
Prahran’s aggressive half backs Jake Stunt Powell and Jayden Williams allowed their team to move the ball from their defensive 50 more methodically and as a result the Two Blues booted10 goals for the second half. For the Magpies, Thomas Zafiropoulos stood tall for his side kicking three out of their five goals.
It was a competitive first quarter at Koonung Reserve, the score reading 12-26 Ormond’s way at the first break. Regrettably it was a different story at the final siren as Ormond got the better of the Old Yarra Cobras by 103 points. It was a tight tussle in the first term with the Monders unable to finish off their chances. In the second term young Ormond midfielder Luke Kennedy starred in his first game of the season as the side kicked seven goals.
Max parkes was the sole dual goal scorer for the Cobras while Benjamin Makowski was deemed best afield for his side. Monders forward Lachlan Crnogorac enjoyed the service by his midfielders kicking three goals with 10 goals for the season and Aidan Soria provided great energy in the forward half. Incredibly, Ormond had four pairs of brothers in their side on the weekend and their form indicates their great synergy across the ground.
Parkside registered their third win of the season against the Therry Penola Lions. The Lions were on top in the first 15 minutes of the game with some repeat entries in their forward half but were unable to capitalise. The Devils on the other hand, took their chances converting a 7-point quarter time lead into a 63-point victory at full time.
The Devils lifted their intensity in the midfield with the likes of Corey McKay, and Michael Romano proved lethal when he had his chance in front of goal adding four goals to his name. The dash from Matt Holden and Mitch Lawson proved too good for the Lions as they only managed three goals for the game. Meanwhile, Luciano Logozzo is becoming one of the best intercept defenders in the division as the Pirates will be looking to reduce his impact this weekend.
Round 5 entails some vital games for teams wanting to get their first win of the season and for those looking to bounce back.
Parkside take on the Pirates at home. It will certainly be a great contest between two defensively strong teams at Pitcher Park. The Magpies will have a big task ahead of them as they take on Ormond at Ransford Oval. Ormond have kicked a combined 44 goals in the last two weeks and will be looking to continue that form.
UHS-VU are looking to continue their unbeaten streak as they come up against Therry Penola at John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve. The Lions were competitive for the majority of the first term but will be hoping for a four-quarter performance.
Prahran are taking on a dangerous Preston Bullants side at home. The Preston Bullants after their loss against UHS-VU certainly know where they are at and what gaps they need to address if they are going to beat the best.
The Bears are back at home against the Old Yarra Cobras. The Old Yarra Cobras are looking to respond after their 103-point loss last weekend and will certainly be motivated to get first points on the board. For the Bears they will be focused on stopping ball movement from their opposition’s defensive 50.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S
Annie IrelandNew favourite emerges as one team remains undefeated
Xavs fly home with a percentage boosting win to break into the top 3, whilst Old Brighton take top spot, one game clear of the rest of the competition. Old Haileybury registered a strong win over Brunswick and it was the Parkdale Vultures who had the upper hand defeating Old Melburnians to round out the weekend in the Division 1 Women’s competition.
It was Old Brighton who reigned supreme on the weekend in the match of the round, defeating Marcellin by 9 points in a low scoring affair to remain as the only undefeated team in the league, after Round 4.
Marcellin dominated in the opening term, kicking 2.1 to Old Brighton’s singular point. However, from quarter time it was all Brighton. The game remained close throughout with the two teams hard to separate. However, Brighton’s ability to overcome a slow start allowed them to carry momentum through the game and come out on top.
Zagontinos kicked two for Marcellin, whilst Hayley Harley, Angie Wang Hartman and Laura Robertson rounded out the top three best players.
For the home team, Katie and Annie Grant impressed whilst Brigitte Wallace was also strong.
Marcellin will be hoping to bounce back next weekend; however, they have a tough game against third-placed Old Xavs who sit equal with them on three wins. Old Brighton will look to keep the undefeated streak going when they host Old Haileybury on Saturday morning.
Old Haileybury held Brunswick winless once again. The first quarter was the only period where the game seemed to be level, with a score line reflecting 3 goals to 1. However, after the main break, Haileybury went up a gear, holding the Renegades scoreless in the second half, charging home to a 38-point victory.
The second half was more a strong defensive performance than offensive for Haileybury, but should they wish to climb up a very competitive Division 1 Women’s ladder, they’ll need to keep slotting goals.
Kelly Dungate was a clear standout for Brunswick, kicking their only two goals for the game. For Haileybury, Serene Vudiniabola was their best along with skipper Bridget Hanrahan who dominated the field, finishing the day with 3 majors.
Next week Old Haileybury faces a tough challenge, travelling to Brighton Beach Oval to take on the undefeated Old Brighton, whilst Brunswick will travel to Gerry Green Reserve to go head-to-head with the Parkdale Vultures.
Old Xaverians posted the strongest victory of the weekend to cement their spot in third place and emerge as a threat for this year’s premiership. Not only was it impressive that they won by 129 points, but they also managed to hold Camberwell to only one goal for the entire game, which didn’t come until the third quarter.
Xavs set the tone from the outset, kicking 7.1 in the first quarter alone. Maggie Gaffney had four goals to her name, whilst Alessandra Libertone kicked another three majors. It was a true team effort, with five multiple goal scorers showing how potent their forward line could potentially be this season.
Keirah Dowd earnt her third best player nomination for the season, whilst Libertone and Gaffney were also recognised.
Romy Klooger scored Camberwell’s only goal to be recognised as their best player, whilst Isabel Dedoncker was also good on a tough day for the team.
Camberwell will find themselves in an evenly matched fixture next weekend when they host Old Melburnians. Old Xaverians will come up against Marcellin in what is set to be the match of the round and will test Xavs true premiership credentials.
Parkdale Vultures was another team to bounce back from a tough loss last weekend, beating Old Melburnians by 38 points at home.
Old Melburnians failed to score a goal for the entire game, registering just three points and only one behind after quarter time.
Whilst it was not a full four-quarter performance from Parkdale, scoring just three points across the second and third quarters, they bounced back in the fourth quarter with 3.3 to finish the game off strong.
Vice-captain Isabella Daddo was a clear best on ground, kicking four goals for Parkdale. Shaedyn Aylen was also notable, scoring a goal. For Old Melburnians, Georgia Dunlop and Clare Fraser stood out on a tough day.
Next up, Old Melburnians face Old Camberwell as both teams look to bounce back from tough losses and post their second win of the season, whilst Parkdale Vultures will host Brunswick.

DIVISION 2 MEN’S
Jainarayan TiwariWattle Park and Whitefriars produce first draw of the season as Brunswick continues to dominate
As the sun sets on Round 4, some teams continue to dominate, whereas few teams seem to be struggling with a fairly evenly matched competition in Division 2 Men’s. Speaking of even, the league recorded its first Senior Men’s draw of the season between Wattle Park and Whitefriars.
The table toppers Brunswick are outplaying everyone in Division 2 as they once again have proved why they are one of the best in the competition. This time, they defeated the hosts, MHSOB, by 114 points at the picturesque Melbourne High School.
The final score was Brunswick, with a mammoth score of 148, whilst MHSOB, who defeated Aquinas in their last game, only managed to record 34 points. MHSOB started the first half on a decent note, but Brunswick pumped the accelerator and dominated the whole game. Brunswick showed off their defensive strength as well as their scoring prowess when they prevented MHSOB from registering a score in the second term.
Hayden Parker was once again a top scorer for Brunswick, kicking 7 goals. Brunswick’s coach, Tom Hunter, expressed his emotions and said, “It’s a good start to our year. The four games have thrown up different challenges, and we’ve won them in different ways after being challenged in all of them.” Will Hellier was best afield for the Unicorns on a tough day and managed to score one of their four majors.
St Mary’s Salesian is still struggling to take a victory back home, as they went down by a mere 13 points to Aquinas at Ferndale Park. Aquinas finished the afternoon on 90 points, while St Mary’s Salesian managed to hit the scoreboard but only recorded a final score of 77.
St Mary’s was nine points behind in the first quarter but attempted to come back in the second quarter and took a three-point lead into the final term. The fourth was a showdown, where Aquinas got back on top and ran home with the win thanks to a 40-point quarter.
Aquinas’ Garrison Asciak was the top scorer for them as he kicked three goals, while at the other end Jos op’t Hoog from St Mary’s had three goals of his own. Meanwhile, the Saints coach, Clay Tait after the game, said, “We are a very young side, and we have only a few experienced players. But we are heading in the right direction. As a team, we will try to give our best in the next game.”
Rivals Elsternwick and South Melbourne Districts also met in the fourth round with the hosts coming away 14-point victors. This game was a doozy with numerous lead changes keeping spectators engaged right up until that final term.
Spencer Hankin of Elsternwick kicked off the action with a swift goal in the game’s second minute, propelling his team to dominate the first quarter. Notably this was his first of his bag of 5 for the day alongside teammate Daniel Marchese who also had 5 goals for the afternoon.
However, South Melbourne turned up the heat in the second quarter, mounting a fierce comeback and energised the match, led by the Districts’ leading goal kicker Jamie Brooker. By the end of the third quarter, South Melbourne had a slight lead of five points, but in the final quarter, Elsternwick ensured they won the contest. The full-time score read 93-79 in favour of the Wickers.
At Rathmines Road Reserve, Hawthorn defeated Bulleen Templestowe by 26 points in a high-scoring affair to maintain their winning streak in the competition. Hawthorn was ahead in the game from the first quarter all the way through but to the Bullants credit, they really motored home with a 6-goal final term stint to narrow the margin, largely thanks to key forward Jack Cowell and his 5-goal haul.
The Hawks had numerous multiple goal scorers including James Southby and Lucas Mercorillo with 3 majors each. Corey Shiels was another to impress on the scoreboard for the Bulants with 4 goals of his own. Bulleen Temp will charge into next week on the back of the resilience they showed late in the game on the weekend, while the Hawks are showing no signs of slowing. The final scoreboard read 110-84 in favour of Hawthorn.
It was the battle of the Ws at Bennettswood Reserve, but a win was not on the cards for either side. Wattle Park and Whitefriars produced the first draw of the season in a thrilling tug of war, with neither a victory nor loss as the final siren.
Both the Animals and the Friars were coming off Round 3 losses and were looking to get back on the winners list. The Friars finished the day with 6 more scoring shots, but ultimately it was their inaccuracy that cost them, the game ending at 58 apiece.
James Marshall from Wattle Park contributed two goals to aid his team efforts, while Benjamin Galtieri, alongside his teammate Thomas Jacotine, had a couple of goals each for the Whitefriars. Both sides will need to shake that flat feeling that lingers following a draw and will be looking to light a fire in them at training this week to explode into Round 5 this coming weekend.
As the fifth-round heats up, once again Brunswick emerges as the frontrunner in Division 2 and will play against the underdogs St Mary’s Salesian, who are still trying to find their first victory.
Bulleen Templestowe will be eyeing to make a comeback against the Aquinas at Ted Ajani Reserve. Having just lost back-to-back games, South Melbourne Districts have showdown ahead of them as they travel to face Whitefriars who are also looking to climb the ladder.
After suffering a massive loss against Brunswick in the fourth round, MHSOB will be eager to win against the informed Elsternwick. Wattle Park will lock horns with Hawthorn who almost felt short of winning its last game.

DIVISION 3 MEN’S
Callum FarquharNorth Brunswick a game clear on top, as St John’s annihilate the competition
Unbeaten streaks, thrashings and bounce back victories highlighted a weekend of strong performances in Division 3’s fourth round of the season.
Canterbury struck back against Richmond Central, following a heartbreaking defeat in Round 3. Kicking the first four goals of the game, the Cobras raced away to an early lead that was never reigned in. The Cobras consistent effort over the game condemned the Snakes to a 54-point loss.
Canterbury’s Brad Kelleher (6) and Jayden Cutts (5) combined for 11 of the Cobra’s 20, landing them in the best with Reuben Crawford-Rust.
Shane Geoghegan and Angus Marshall were defiant in defeat for Richmond Central. They host the undefeated Power House next week in a match that could shape their season’s trajectory.
North Brunswick have done it again. Despite being down by 21 at the major break, the Bulls have come from behind for the second consecutive week to beat Swinburne University by 41 points.
An inaccurate start from North Brunswick saw them goalless in the opening term, as the Razorbacks created a ten-point buffer. That lead extended into halftime as Swinburne kicked four goals to two.
However, the Bulls never-say-die attitude hardly waivered, kicking seven goals to one in the premiership quarter. North Brunswick’s defence solidified the result, constricting the Razorbacks to just a point in the last.
Joel Grimmond was once again in the best for the Bulls, joining multiple goalkickers Simon Woodward and Luke Russell. For Swinburne, Justin Burch, Salvatore Amenta, and Tyson Wiegold were best on. Sitting fourth at 2-2, the Razorbacks play Eley Park next week in a chance to rectify their record.
A fast-starting La Trobe University defeated Box Hill North by 48 points, thanks to a seven-goal first term. Despite a committed effort for the rest of the match, the Demons were unable to cut down on La Trobe’s 35-point quarter time lead.
Connor McCredden proved to be dominant again down back, regarded as best on field for La Trobe. Midfielders Hugo O’Callaghan, Lachlan Webb and Archie Conboy were also among La Trobe’s best.
Mauled by injuries currently, captain Jonathan Tommasoni strived to lead his undermanned Demons squad with an impressive three-goal haul. Joshua Hocking’s four were equally as important, and saw him best on for Box Hill North. The Demons will regroup and go again at home against St John’s in Round 5, as they look to amend their 0-4 start.
St John’s have sent an intimidating message to the competition this week, with a staggering 212-point annihilation of Eley Park. A 64-point first quarter lead set the tone for match, as the Sharks struggled to defend the JOCs’ formidable forward line.
St John’s kicked 38 goals for the match, 19 of which were kicked by new recruit Matthew Carnelley. In his three matches this year, Carnelley has kicked six, two and now 19, in what could be the signing of the year.
Eley Park are another side who have been decimated by injuries as they slip to 1-2 for the season. Ben Field and Matt Gallagher provided run and carry for the Sharks, kicking a goal each to boot. Joel Kennedy and Zac Hayes gave effort all day as they landed in the Sharks’ best.
Albert Park have responded to a triple-figure loss last week with their own triple-figure win against Chadstone on Saturday.
Chadstone started impressively, going into quarter-time leading by a goal. The Falcons found momentum in the second term, kicking five goals to none. Albert Park outscored the Synners 101-20 in the second half, cruising to their second win of the season.
Braiden Leong, Hristos Millaras, Bethel Loh and Joshua Kubeil were among the best for Chadstone.
Falcon forward Jack Lee kicked 11 goals, beating his tengoal performance in Round 1. Henry Olive and Dan Young were also of significant influence in the match.
It was an important win for the Falcons, who had suffered two losses in a row coming into the game. A blockbuster fixture with Canterbury next week will demonstrate if the Falcons are back on track.
With the season in full swing, let’s take a look at Round 5’s fixture.
Richmond Central host Power House who are coming in fresh off the bye in an intriguing matchup. Despite sitting at 1-2, the Snakes have had a tough fixture, and this match against the unbeaten Power House will demonstrate if they are a genuine finals threat.
La Trobe play Chadstone at home, with the opportunity to boost their percentage well-poised. A 2-1 record sits La Trobe in sixth, however a win against the Synners could see them soar up the ladder.
Swinburne University face off against Eley Park at home. The Razorbacks are targeting a third win for the year, but a spirited Eley Park will play with some fight after their heavy loss. It emerges as a doggedly-fought contest to come.
Box Hill North are aiming to open their account against St Johns, however the JOC’s fearsome form shapes as an extreme task to overcome. Victory from St Johns could see them atop the Division 3 ladder, as North Brunswick have the bye this week.
The 2-2 sides of Canterbury and Albert Park face off in a predicted tight contest. With a well-positioned ladder spot up for grabs, there is plenty at stake for these two sides.

HOLMESGLEN U19’S REPORT
Joel KennedySt Bedes/Mentone impress whilst Old Scotch win in a thriller
Round 5 of the Holmesglen Under 19’s Premier Men’s competition delivered a handful of close games and exhilarating matchups, which a major upset by St Bedes/Mentone Tigers over Old Xaverians. It is a tight contest for the young guns of the VAFA who consistently deliver skilfully contested performances week in, week out.
The weekend kicked off with an intriguing matchup between Old Brighton and the University Blues. Despite a lopsided opening term in favour of Brighton, It was the Blues who bounced back in the second term, trailing by just 16 points at the main break.
Alas it was not to be for the Blues, as the undefeated Old Brighton stormed home late to secure a 33-point victory. Old Brighton have now extended their winning streak to five and sit solitary at the top of the ladder.
For Old Brighton, Jonah Campigli continued his goal-kicking form, slotting 3 majors. Oliver Goodger, Cooper Dowe, Ryan McKenzie and Flynn Bongiorno were also impressive in the win. For the opposition, Willem Sanders, Jevan Gunaratnam, William Richter, Lachlan Rees, Henry Woolcock and Grant Walker showed promising signs.
The match of the round involved Old Scotch triumphing over rival St Kevin’s in a nailbiter at Camberwell Sports Ground. SKOB had their nose in front right through the match, when a fourth quarter showdown saw both sides attack the scoreboard. Old Scotch rallied against the old rival, to fly home as 1-point victors. The Stars held their nerve and quietly shone across the park before making a late dash to seal the win, in what would prove to be a historical clash between two quality sides.
With the victory, Old Scotch make the move up to second position on the ladder, just a game behind the unbeaten Old Brighton. It was Will Hucker, Jasper Hassoun, Aiden Brien, Oliver Iser, Matthew Mayes and Jake Phillips who drove the side to victory. Despite a heartbreaking loss, St Kevin’s remain in third position. Jack Luscombe-Gluyas, George Delimitrou, Jackson O’Malley, Ben Ball, Liam Hepburn and Fred Noble were amongst the best in Round 5.
Later in the day, Caulfield Grammarians put De La Salle to the sword, winning by 32-points. Leading the entire day, Caulfield cruised to an authoritative win, notching up their third for the year. Charlie Eerhard, Ronan James, Hamish McInerney, Nick Madgwick, Lachlan Lawrence and Tommy Warner were pivotal in the win.
It was inaccuracy that was the common theme on the day for opposition De La Selle, kicking nine goals and a disappointing
15 behinds. Captain Max Miller impressed with 3 majors, whilst Josh Cumberlidge, Hugo Sheedy, Jackson Cauchi, Tom Childs and Joshua Stewart all put in strong performances. The side remains winless in 2024.
The penultimate game of Round 5 saw St Bedes/Mentone Tigers outrun the Old Xavierians at Stradbroke park, in what was an upset no one saw coming. St Bedes started strong to let their opposition know they came to play, and that they did. The Tigers put in a consistent 4 quarters, but it was a fiery dash home hitting the scoreboard with 6 majors in the final term to walk away with a 34-point victory.
Sacha Dimachki, Ben Hempel and Liam Bowles spearheaded the attack up forward for the victors, each kicking 4 goals for St Bedes/Mentone. Bennett Martin, Ethan Hall and Cooper Donnellan were also named amongst the best. Thomas Delahunt, Oliver Britten-Jones, Atticus Scally, Ed Dalton, Nick Honeyman and Fred Visentini were the shining light for Old Xavs in the loss.
A twilight contest between Beaumaris and Williamstown CYMS round out the weekend. The opening quarter was hard fought with only 1 point separating the two sides, but it was the Sharks who kicked away in a second quarter, kicking 4 goals to Williamtown’s 1.
Once the Sharks got the upper hand they didn’t let go and the day ended with a Beaumaris 37-point win at Banksia reserve. Jhett Haeata was named best afield, whilst Angus Bowd, Carlos Reynolds, Mitchell Davidson and Aiden McCarthy were solid for the sharks. Xavier Snelling, Cooper Eaton, Ben Davies, Andreas Martinez, Jack Wheeler and Charlie Norris toiled hard for Williamstown CYMS in the loss. They will look to next week to improve against St Kevin’s.
Looking ahead, the top of the table will face off at Camberwell Sportsground in a not-to-be-missed battle between Old Scotch and Old Brighton. The Round starts bright and early for these two sides, with everything on the line. Over at the infamous Stradbroke Park, Old Xaverians are looking to get back on the winners list when they host a winless De La Salle. This is sure to be no walk in the park for De La but their competitiveness against Caulfield in Round 5 shows they are not to be underestimated.
Williamstown CYMS will cross the West Gate Bridge to face St Kevin’s OB, whilst University Blues come up against Beaumaris at home. Round 6 culminates in a contest between St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers and Caulfield Grammarians, both of whom are coming off strong wins.

MILESTONES
VAFA congratulates the following players on reaching these incredible milestones. Well done!
Callie Georgiadis (Glen Eira/Old McKinnon)
50
Congratulations Callie on playing 50 games. A member of the inaugural 2019 Senior Women’s team and a Division 4 Premiership player, Callie is a tough winger/forward who knows where the goals are. We look forward to many more quality games at Packer Park from Callie for years to come. 50
Lucy Burgess (Parkdale Vultures)
Lucy is one of Parkdale’s best midfielders and was a part of our inaugural team in 2019. She has elite endurance and marking capabilities and is never in doubt to kick a running goal. Lucy won our best and fairest in 2019 and 2022 and was second in the league best and fairest in 2022.
Bella Daddo (Parkdale Vultures)
50
50
Bella is a courageous footballer who can play back, forward and midfield, wherever she is needed for the team. She puts her body on the line every game she plays and will find a way to kick a goal when her team needs it. Bella came second in our best and fairest in 2023 as well as winning Best Finals Player.
Ben Rodwell (Marcellin)
Congratulations to Ben Rodwell who will play his 50 th game this weekend! Rodders has been a rock down back since graduating from the Under 19s and has been a fantastic player for both the Reserves and Thirds over the last couple of years. More importantly, Rodders has been a huge asset to our Thirds over the last few years helping the team to continue to grow. Good luck to Rodders, here’s to the next 50!
Tim James (Marcellin)
100
Congratulations to Timothy James who plays his 100 th game this weekend! TJ has been a solid player for the club for many years, with his versatility helping him play up forward, down back and in the ruck as well. Last season was a great year for TJ, who provided some great support in front of goals and in the middle for the Reserves team. We wish him all the best this weekend for this massive milestone!
Please send milestones to susan@vafa.com.au by 5pm Tuesday, including a brief description and photo.
