FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME
Women’s Rising Star Nominee
Simone Mooney
The VAFA congratulates young gun Simone Mooney from Fitzroy who has been nominated as the Round 6 Rising Star. Simone has featured in the best players every week in her debut season for the Roys.
What the club said:
“Simone has been amazing this year for the senior club,” says coach Nathan Jumeau. “From her very first game since stepping up from the Fitzroy Juniors’ Youth Girls team, Simone has played a massive role in the midfield, also finding the goals with pleasing regularity.
“With quiet determination, Simone’s single-minded aim is to get better as a footballer and as a teammate at training and in games and has impressed everyone at the Roys.
“Simone is a pleasure to coach, and we look forward watching what’s bound to be a long and brilliant career.”
Men’s Rising Star Nominee
Rhys Galvin
The VAFA congratulates Rhys Galvin from Old Scotch Football Club, who has received the Anytime Fitness Rising Star nomination for Round 6. Galvin is a stalwart in defence and kept the Xavs forwards quiet in their 35-point victory on the weekend, earning him a spot in the best.
What the club said:
Men’s Senior Coach, Mark Gnatt said, “At the raw age of 18, Rhys plays with poise and composure well beyond his years. He is a solid defender that can play as a key back (at 190cm) in a lockdown role and is developing his craft as a rebounder off half-back. He was tasked with matching up on one of the competition’s key players on the weekend and Rhys acquitted himself very well by winning most one-on-one battles.
Rhys is a quiet country lad from Warragul, and he has fitted into the Old Scotch footy club seamlessly. His team-mates love having him run out with them and he has proven to be a consistent contributor each week and thoroughly deserves this rising star nomination.”

West Brunswick win in a nail biter, as Kew Bears secure a win down south
Prahran took on UHS-VU on Saturday; a game that was expected to be a close encounter, and it was just that. Both teams started strongly with Prahran taking the main ascendancy throughout the game as they took a lead at every term. Prahran midfielder and weapon Matt Clifford once again showed whose boss on a football field kicking four goals. Clifford’s ability to convert this season has highlighted him as one of the prominent midfielders of the Div 1 comp. UHS didn’t lose hope though as they were able to keep up for a good portion of the game.
Paddy Wernert, Harrison Kenndey shining lights for the UHS side as they looked to try and regain the momentum for the young side but just fell short. Prahran coming away with the win in the end 15.11 101 to UHS 8.8 56.
The inform Kew FC Bears travelled south to take on the Old Peninsula Pirates at Harry Mcdonald Oval. Kew really took the game on from the second quarter onwards as Lachie Brown and Matt Sharkey were strong down forward to help Kew to a commanding win. The Pirates were not able to wrestle back the momentum during the game as they struggled to convert on the scoreboard. In saying that the pirates did have some loyal soldiers in their team with Peacock and Baczyk named in their best in the clash. Kew Bears’ winning streak increases to 4 wins in a row, winning 11.19 85 to Old Pens 6.7 43.
West Brunswick took on Preston at the Ransford Oval on Saturday. The magpies were under siege early as the Bullants took the early head start to their game leading at half time by a goal. Conor Howard and Liam Mcloed were instrumental for the Bullants early on, leading the way for the Bullants to hopefully snatch a win. However, the Magpies came steaming home with a resurgence as they looked to push on for a victory. Goals to Hutchins, Wall and Buckler helped the Magpies over the line in an absolute thriller, winning by six points over the Bullants.
Big matchup between Oakleigh and Therry Penola, with the excitement building from the week leading in. Both key forwards in Eddie Standish and Kane O’Halloran, put on goal kicking masterclass in what was a very high-scoring game. O’Halloran just getting the better of the two, kicking 6 to Standish’s 5 goals. When push came to shove, it was the Krushers booting seven goals in the second term to put them ahead that really cemented their dominance in the game. But the Lions didn’t throw in the towel, despite trailing, posting a commendable final score of 89. Ultimately, the Oakleigh Krushers got the win by 27 points.
Will anyone stop the Glen Eira Gryphons this season? They are looking like the Melbourne FC of 2021. They hosted Ivanhoe at Packer Park in a twilight special and really put the sword to Ivanhoe from the start, keeping them goalless to midway of the second term. Daniel McDonald put on a goal kicking masterclass and a best on ground performance booting five goals. which was able to put the nail in the coffin for the magpies. Ivanhoe did have some handy contributions from Moran and Muscat as they aimed to try stem the flow of the Gryphons onslaught. This wasn’t enough as Glen Eira secured the victory and went to 6-0 for Season 2023.

Old Brighton stamp their authority and Old Geelong get back on track.
Round 6 for Division 1 Women’s saw a pile on of goals, with convincing wins for multiple sides.
Old Brighton was determined not to lose two weeks in a row and made up for last week’s defeat with a strong win over Old Camberwell Grammarians. Old Brighton was ahead all day but really stamped their authority on Old Camberwell in the second half, only allowing Old Camberwell to score a further two behinds while adding seven more goals themselves.
Daisy Flockart caused a headache for the Old Camberwell defenders, ending the day with four goals to her name and featuring in the best for Old Brighton. This puts her in equal third place on the goal kicking tally for Division 1, with nine goals so far this season.
India and Lily Tait also continued their strong form for Old Brighton, both receiving Coach’s votes once again. For Old Camberwell, Alexandra Herrington and Olivia Honore were stalwart as ever.
It was fitting that the match of the round saw Old Melburnians host Beaumaris at the home of VAFA football, Elsternwick Park.
It was a tight contest all day, with Old Melburnians leading by a single point at half time. Unfortunately for the Omelettes, it was the third quarter that let them down, as they were unable to score but let Beaumaris get away with one important goal that would turn out to be the difference, with Beaumaris eventually getting over the line by six points.
Sally Peers and Clare Fraser battled hard all day for Old Melburnians with support from crafty forward duo, Sophie Fraser (3 goals) and Ellen Williams (2 goals), while Cassandra Newman was best for Beaumaris for the third time this season.
Another strong performance by Samantha Mclean saw her finish with three goals for the Sharks, putting her atop the goal kicking leader board with a tally of 14 goals, three goals clear of her teammate Simone Marinelli.
Hawthorn AFC are still yet to record a win in Division 1, after losing to Hampton Rovers by 33 points. The two teams met at Castlefield Reserve where the home side was just too strong for the travelling Hawks.
Holly du Plessis and Charrlotte Miller never gave up hope, competing hard all day for the Hawks, while Maisy Evans and Jasmine Andros continued their excellent form to play significant roles in the Rovers’ win.
Hampton Rovers now sits just outside of the top four and will have the opportunity to launch themselves into finals contention when they come up against the underperforming Old Haileybury next week.
Hawthorn AFC will continue to strive for that first win but might have to be patient as they come up against the in-form Old Brighton next week.
Old Geelong have got their season back on track with a strong win over Old Haileybury.
Old Haileybury brought the heat early, hitting the scoreboard first whilst keeping Old Geelong goalless for the first term. However, it proved to be another tale of the premiership quarter, with Old Geelong kicking 3.3 in the third to make any comeback too big of an ask for Old Haileybury. Old Haileybury did kick the final goal of the game, but it was too little too late, as they went down by 22 points.

The VAFA is looking for volunteer reporters to cover Divisions 3 & 4 Women’s for the 2023 season. If you’re interested, please email media@vafa.com.au
Annabel Rafferty and Eloise Mccrae were best for their respective sides.
Old Haileybury have now slid to 8th place on the ladder and will need to turn their season around quickly if they want to make finals again this year.
Marcellin OC have reminded us that they are a powerhouse of women’s football, after a compelling performance against Old Xaverians. Bolstered by the likes of returning VFLW-listed players, Laura Robertson and Alana Pane; the Sheagles were relentless.
It was clear it was going to be a long day for Old Xaverians, after Marcellin kicked four unanswered goals in the opening term. Old Xaverians did well to get the game back on their terms for the middle stretch but they ran out of steam, allowing Marcellin to kick another four goals in the final quarter which saw them storm home to win by 48 points.
It was a team performance by Marcellin, who had eight different goal scorers, but key contributions from Jennae Wakefield, Talia Oates and Taylah Lambert should not go unmentioned.
For Old Xaverians, Eibhlin Craig and Monique Mennilli did what they could do to keep their team in the game.
