CAPTURING MOMENTS

According to the theme of moving pictures, the installation creates a definite pause in one’s experience, and by the use of reflective surfaces it captures glimpses of actions and movements from a varying range of locations due to the tessellated form. The curved shape of the installation allows a wider angle of the area in order to provide the viewer a way to experience the event from a wider range of angles.

NIRANTARA

Following the theme of the Kalaghoda Arts Festival, 2014- MOVING PICTURES, we tried to capture the transitions that take place in a persons life and which can be relived through a series of continuous experiences. Keeping this thought in mind we designed a piece of urban furniture which takes it’s form from the continuous loop of a mobius loop. The street furniture was selected for VR SURAT DUMAS ART FESTIVAL and for PHOENIX MARKETCITY ART WEEK.

ADAPTIVE REUSE

CASE STUDY_1 BORROWING, REROUTING ,DISTORTION... The Naked city was the second psychogeographic map, following the paths of situationist international organisation and was designed in 1957. It expresses the incompatibility of Cartesian logic with the real experience of the city, characterized by the intimacy between environment and human emotion.

CASE STUDY_2 PARC DE LA VILLETTE

OVERLAP OF NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL Parc de la Villette as a place of culture where natural and artificial are forced together into a state of constant reconfiguration and discovery

The project was initiated with the study of transformation of areas of two peculiar sites in Mumbai, the Eastern Waterfront at the edge and the Bhuleshwar in the centre of the city

5

Reconstructed view with piecing together an experience of space that was actually terrestrial, fragmented, subjective, temporal and cultural.

VAGISHA SINGH_PORTFOLIO

NATURAL ARTIFICIAL

The objective was to study the changing areas of Mumbai and to look at defunctional spaces for adaptive and innovative reuse to revive and restore the history of Mumbai.

NAKED CITY

Spaces in Bhuleshwar have been reused and are regenrated over time. Most of the old buildings have been occupied and adaptively reused. Case study 1, Bhuleshwar: This temple, initially occupying all three floors of the building has let out its ground floor. The ground floor has been reused from a temple to a tailors shop and now to a doctor’s clinic.

However, there are certain pockets in the fabric of Bhuleshwar which are losing its historical significance due to the regeneration. Case study 2, Bhuleshwar: The wadis of Bhuleshwar are being reused for commercial activities, which in the process are losing its significance.

Bhuleshwar, present right in the centre of the historical precinct is a very important part of the history of Mumbai and puts forward a very dense fabric of its own. Bhuleshwar is also known to house hundreds of temples dating back to when the area started growing, a hundred years back. Major Temples of Bhuleshwar, situated on the main road and the inner streets The nodes developed after the temples, and activities started flooding in. VAGISHA SINGH_PORTFOLIO

EXPERIMENT_1_ Rearranging Outside to Outside By using the strategy of creating new experiences, by borrowing and rearranging, the Eastern watefront is rearranged and superimposed with points from the western waterfront. This gives us possibilities of scenarios that help us in relooking at the area for revival, since the western waterfront works and thrives as a public space in the same city.

EXPERIMENT_2 Another montage depicting the area from Kalaghoda to the waterfront, and is superimposed with the Girgaum beach to create a scenario of a spine getting connected to the waterfront from the historical precinct.

7

SITE

SITE STUDY

Rearrangement-Inside to Outside For the adaptive reuse of the warehouse on site, the rearrangement process of Inside out was used, as done to revive the wadis of Bhuleshwar as opposed to the rearrangement of outside to inside which is done to revive the site. This was done by superimposing the scale of Bhuleshwar streets with the scale of the port to merge an an environment with another and make people realize about the scale. The montage here depicts the superimposition of the two scales. VAGISHA SINGH_PORTFOLIO

The proposed programs included a maritime museum considering the built up curiosity of the public, as the area was walled and secluded. The warehouse would be converted to the museum and the area around will include an open plaza, viewing decks towards the sea, the port and the city, a pathway going into the water and a jetty for boat rides. The area overlooks the docks on one side, the heritage precinct on the other side and the sea on the third side.

MASSING /STUDY DIAGRAMS AND MODELS

Crawford market is a heritage building of great significance situated in the north of Mumbai. The brief was to make a new market place for Mumbai, while revitalizing the area. On the basis of the site study on a macro and a micro scale, the idea of having vantage points from the market as well making the crawford market as a vantage point came about. This was taken forward by making the roof accesible with usable arenas.

Mumbai and Newyork being two densely populated cities lack in open spaces for regular use. This being one of the main reasons for lack of fitness amongst children and adults

The research showed us vast differences in the residents of Mumbai and New-York.
