Sample of work done as an intern during 1st year summer vacations
Site The site is located within Architectural block of campus of School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. The place was initially a junkyard and have a parking space infront of it. It is along the western boundary wall.

About
Challenges
This project was basically a part of ‘construction’ studio where as students are required to build or get involved in building some structure at true scale. So the faculty members and students of second year section ‘C’ decided to create an exhibition space for end semester jury.
During the course of this project we faced many challenges in designing as well as construction part due to site conditions like presence of trees, poles and underground wires at a shallow depth as well as in making arrangements.
Involvement My role in this project was as a project manager and an architect. I made complete working drawings for the design. Apart from that, I acted as first representative from college and was dealing with sponsor, contractor, architect, field men and workers on its behalf.
1) Marking on site 2) Digging of foundation 3) Raising of sidewall 4) laying of columns
Working drawings for the project
Step 1 The project started with an assignment of making 4 parallel walls of specific dimensions on a scale of 1:50. Then using the material from those walls only, we had to turn the space enclosed into a hangout place. So we made several prototypes of possible space.
Aleatory repetitions
Brief
Step 2
Period :Ist year, 2nd Semester Duration: 4 weeks
While designing, we often intend to create a set of rules for the person using a space so as to create a flow. This practice is useful in places like airports, court rooms where order is required. But design is not limited to some predefined permutations of space usage as thought by designer. Following this idea, the brief was to create a hangout space with indefinable occurrences of movements and meetings. The proposed site for design is the volleyball court in architectural block of college. Apart from being engaging space, climatic factors like sun light and wind was also to be considered.
From entire spaces, we then started focusing on elements which according to our previous exploration was serving the purpose and then developed them.
Step 3
Finally the entire place was set-up using the elements explored previously in such a fashion that it turns out to be a non-mundane and non forcing design. Apart from that, placement of elements was in such a fasion that space is usable in all weather conditions.
Step 4
Digital models were generated to understand the shadow play and to visualise the usage of space within proper context.
Step 1 As per project requirement, we weren’t allowed to take land area from park. So we begin with an activity where we explored the possibility of connecting ground to other levels using paper.
Center for Democracy
Brief
Step 2
Period :Ist year, 2nd Semester Duration: 5 weeks
The central park in Connaught Place is a very dynamic site in terms of usage and its context but it has nearly no influence on the political movements even after being in close proximity to ‘Jantar Mantar Road’ which holds maximum protests in entire country. So aim of this project was to link central park with jantar mantar and provide a space for democratic protests without disturbing its actual purpose.
Then taking inspiration from those paper model, we started designing spaces in different levels. We created physical model to understand the space better.
Step 3 After exploring the possibilities, we started to fit our design in the site. Responding to context was a challenge as the site has a metro track going below it and which must be well connected to our design. We started looking out possibilities of how and what kind of people will us the space and tried to mould our design accordingly.
Process 1
Finally we made drawings, physical and virtual model of our proposed design schemes.
Comfortable
Sufficient
Efficient
It is that state of being where anything more isn’t required. Everything that is required whether to provide physical comfort or mental already exists.
It is the situation when the requirements are just fulfilled. It is the minimum level where comfort is assured atleast at the physical level. Architecturally if a particular space is defined as sufficient for some function, it is the minimum space required to carry on that function with ease.
Something is termed as efficient where everything has importance and it’s existence has a reason. Architecturally if a particular space is termed as efficient, it implies that the smallest unit also has a purpose and is made/created judiciously.
Step 1 So to begin this project, we defined our understanding of a sufficient, efficient and comfortable space. Then we mapped the daily routine of a person and amount of space he requires to perform those activities. By merging these bits of space and overlapping wherever possible, we defined our own scheme for the same.
Living unit
Brief
Period :Ist year, 2nd Semester Duration: 4 weeks
The aim of this assignment was to design a space which is ‘sufficient’,’efficient’ and ‘comfortable’ simultaneously for a single user. It must cater to his needs as per its routine
Sleeping
Stretching
Defecating
Brushing
Bathing
Cooking
Eating
Working
Relaxing
Features • Total cover area is 13.2 sqm (including exterior walls) • Ample circulation space to perform activities like squatting, wearing clothes etc. • Dimensions of every element including furniture is taken anthropometrically. • Bunker bed with eating/working space on lower part. • Height of ceiling chosen considering the maximum requirement of person sitting on bed stretching his arms while yawning. • Window near the bed high enough to hinder the wall to be used as backrest. • Book rack provided near the bed to place book/ laptop/ mobile phone etc. before sleeping. It is oriented slightly off-centre so as to facilitate easy opening of cabinet shutter. • Modular kitchen provided with modern equipment like dishwasher, refrigerator below counter level to save space. • Buffer space above cabinet and work table used for storage.
Step 1 (Unit Design) I started by designing a single living unit which is suitable for both familiy and bachelors. I was focused at providing maximum comfort in minimum area.
Transient labour camp
Brief
Features
Period :2nd year, 2nd Semester Duration: 7 weeks
Every year thousands of people migrage from villages to cities in search of jobs to support themselves and their family. And construction industry is one of the biggest magnet attracting these people. When these workers come to city, most of them don’t have a place to stay. They’re provided accomodation by contractor which in most cases are in unlivable conditions.
Living unit for family and bachelors as well Capacity of 4 adults per room Sufficient cooking space inside each unit Window on 2 walls for proper cross ventilation Has hard, smooth and impermiable flooring as per labour laws in India
So aim of this project is to design living unit for such construction workers which is transient, comfortable as well as economic.
Step 2 (Clustering)
For clustering of units, instead of making big clusters, I joined 8 units to form a bigger unit kind cluster. It ensured more dense and flexible design Features -A cluster of 8 living units -Units on First Floor can be merged to create larger dorms -Entire structure raised above ground as a response to unhealthy ground conditions -Proper ventilation in each unit -Completely modular units
-Positioning of units done to provide maximum privacy -Shaded sitting space outside every unit on ground floor -Possibility of expansion upto 3 vertical levels
