SPEED DISCIPLINES DOWNHILL Downhill racers attempt to be the fastest down the mountain through a minimum number of control gates. Speeds in downhill often exceed 80 mph on major courses and require a hill with at least a 750-meter vertical drop. Downhill racers must have two training runs on a course before each race, although the second training run may be waived.

ASSOCIATED PRESS

SUPER-G Added to the World Cup calendar in 1983, super-G was initially created in order to provide the downhill specialists with an additional opportunity to score World Cup points, essentially giving the “speed” skiers two events, while the “technical” racers had giant slalom and slalom. A cross between downhill and giant slalom, super-G is a onerun event like downhill, but with more frequent turns, similar to giant slalom. Unlike downhill, however, there are no prior training runs for super-G, just a racer inspection the morning of the race.

ASSOCIATED PRESS

ALPINE COMBINED Introduced to the World Cup circuit in 2005, alpine combined (formerly known as super combined) melds one run of downhill and one run of slalom on the same day to showcase the skills of the all-around racers, able to handle both the speed and technical aspects of the sport. The alpine combined not only tests a racer’s versatility, but also his or her stamina, with often less than two hours between the conclusion of the downhill leg and the start of the slalom segment. A hybrid of the traditional combined event, which features one run of downhill and two runs of slalom on two separate days, the super combined was designed to be a spectator friendly competition, where the winner was determined by the lowest combined time for the two runs, rather than the previous complex mathematical formula. ❱❱ PAGE 14

TECHNICAL DISCIPLINES ❱❱ FROM PAGE 12

GIANT SLALOM Giant slalom is the event characterized as being the discipline requiring the most technical skill. Skiers race down the mountain through a faster and more open course than in slalom, which requires the execution of many short, quick turns. The number of gates in a giant slalom course is determined by the vertical drop of the hill. The event is staged in two runs, with the total time of each run added together to determine the final finish order. In World Cup competition, the finish list from the first run is cut to the fastest 30 racers and reversed to determine the second run start order. In World Championships competition, top 60 racers who finish the first run are allowed to take a second run, with the top 30 still reversed.

NATIONS TEAM EVENT

SLALOM Requiring the quickest turns in all of ski racing, the slalom course is carefully designed to test the skill, timing and judgment of competitors. The gates are placed in varying combinations, demanding great skill to achieve the best line of approach and exit with the different combinations. Contested in two runs, the competitor with the fastest combined time is declared the winner. Any skier that misses a gate is disqualified. As with giant slalom, in World Cup competition, the top 30 racers in the first run are reversed to form the second run start list. In World Championships competition, top 60 racers who finish the first run are allowed to take a second run, with the top 30 still reversed. 14

CARRIE FELL OFFICIAL ARTIST CREATES SET OF FOUR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS POSTERS

T

he 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships now sports its complete visual look as the full set of four World Championships posters, produced by 2015 Official Artist Carrie Fell, is now available. Recent additions to the set include “Blaze of Glory” and “True Grit,” the latter inspired by U.S. star Lindsey Vonn. All original artwork features a combination of acrylic and oil, highlighted with Fell’s trademark vibrant colors and fluid forms. “When the Organizing Committee asked me to represent the 2015 World Championships, I began the invigorating prospect of painting America proud,” Fell said. “As an artist, I go to work with a vision to capture the colorful outlook by way of anticipation of the soul of this historic event; a visualization into the hearts of the American athletes and to the many athletes that will come here in the colors of the globe.” The poster collection is available for online purchase by clicking the Fan Connect icon on vailbeavercreek2015.com. In addition, Fell will be signing World Championships posters at various locations throughout the course of

In addition to the World Championships poster series, Fell’s work now also adorns a number of Vail, Avon, Beaver Creek and Eagle County buses as a rolling promotion of the Championships, along with a building-sized mural in Avon’s new Art Walk area. “We are very excited to introduce Carrie’s World CARRIE FELL Championships pieces to the world through our event posters, bus wraps and other applications,” said Ceil Folz, president of the 2015 World Championships Organizing Committee. “I know that they are all going to be very popular.” Painting professionally since 1988, Fell opened her Vail gallery, located in the Solaris Plaza complex, in December of 2011. T

he largest single ski resort in the United States, Vail is known for its wide variety of terrain, which has kept long-time locals and returning guests alike occupied for over half a century. On any given day, you’ll find powder, sun and an abundant amount of groomed terrain, beginner runs, experts-only cliffs and cornices, and world-famous aspen and evergreen glades, all connected by a series of high-speed quads and gondolas which keep crowds dispersed and flowing throughout the day. From one of four base-loading areas you’ll connect to on-mountain lodges and gathering grounds like Mid-Vail, where the options range from cafeteria to fine dining service, Belle’s Camp, an iconic gathering spot with public-access grills located miles into the wilderness, or Adventure Ridge, with its ziplines, snowmobiles and tubing hill for all to enjoy. On the east end of Vail Mountain, Golden Peak hosts a world-class race arena where

national teams from all over the world train slalom and GS during the month of November. The halfpipe and slopestyle course at Golden Peak is also home to the Burton U.S. Open, where the best in the world compete for one of the largest purses in snowboarding every March. Head southeast from Golden Peak and you’ll encounter the famous mogul runs of Highline and Roger’s Run, named after Olympic gold medal giant slalom skier Roger Staub, the former head of Vail’s Ski School. Continue southeast from there to China Bowl, known around the world for its vast expanse of open powder fields, below tree line yet devoid of trees from natural fire that scorched the area before the idea of a ski resort was ever conceived there. Finally, in the farthest south reaches of the resort you’ll encounter Blue Sky Basin, 600-plus acres of north-facing terrain that seems to preserve the soft snow long after the rest of the mountain has lost its stashes of powder.

THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS is only a slice of what Beaver Creek Resort has to offer. From the open, intermediate trails of Larkspur and Rose Bowl to the steep bumps of Grouse Mountain, skiers and riders of all abilities will feel at home on Beaver Creek. And visitors from all corners of the world will feel welcome, as well, with the resort’s European-style village-to-village opportunities for skiing and snowboarding. The Westin Gondola will take you from Avon to Lower Beaver Creek Mountain Express lift, which drops you off on the gentle, manicured slopes of Bachelor Gulch, another enjoyable village experience. West of Bachelor Gulch lies Arrowhead village and the town of Edwards, with the Arrow Bahn Express lift offering access to the slopes of Beaver Creek from there. Runs like Cresta and Pow Wow provide some nice cruisers with views of the lovely homes in the area. But for the most common Beaver Creek experience, start at the base of the newly

replaced Centennial Express Lift, a highspeed, state-of-the-art combination lift that includes a series of six-passenger chairs alternating with 10-person gondola cabins, capable of carrying 3,400 people per hour up the hill. For the most beginner skiers, Beaver Creek has a feature in the main village near the Centennial combination lift that may well provide the best learning experience in North America: The Buckaroo Gondola. By taking passengers and their gear 400 vertical feet up a “bunny hill” via a gondola cabin, Beaver Creek has eliminated the challenge of one of the most intimidating elements in learning the sport – loading the chairlift when you have barely figured out how to stand up on your skis or snowboard. Get comfortable via the Haymeadow bunny hill accessed from the Buckaroo Gondola, and you won’t need to overcome the challenge of the chairlift until you have the skills and confidence to do so.
