WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Austria lands gold in Nations Team Event Team USA goes out in quarterfinals By Shauna Farnell Special to the Daily

VAIL — Austria proved once again why it is the powerhouse capital of alpine skiing, winning the gold medal — its third since the event’s inception — in the Nations Team Event at Golden Peak on Tuesday. The event features 16 nations, each represented by a team of four, two males and two females, who compete head-to-head with a racer from another nation on a short, parallel course with a couple of ledges to drop off. With a team comprised of Marcel Hirscher and Michaela Kirchgasser, both fresh off of their medal-winning performances in the World Championships combined races, plus Eva-Marie Brem and Christoph Noesig, Austria started its siege by smothering last-seeded Argentina in Heat No. 1. Although the Norwegians put up a good fight, particularly Leif Kristian Haugen, who led his run against Hirscher until the Austrian blasted ahead at the bottom of the course, the Austrian team prevailed and moved onto the semifinals against Switzerland. After another set of tight matchups, Austria advanced to face and conquer Canada in the finals.

‘IT’S NOT THAT EASY’ “It was just a perfect day for us. Everybody was expecting us to get the gold medal, but it’s not that easy to get it,” said Austria’s Brem. “It was an unbelievable day, a long day,” seconded Noesig. “Great jobs to all the guys on the Austrian team. It was really close from the second heat on.” “It’s two days, two medals,” Kirchgasser said, mentioning that although the course is very short (Hirscher put down the single fastest run of the day in 22.14 seconds), tactics come into play, particularly at the start. “You need a good start that you can push the first two gates and carry that speed. Then you have to know where you have to ski tactics. When you ski everything full, it was too fast on the middle part because it was too turny. You need to get the feeling of how much can you take off.”

CANADIANS GET SILVER The silver medal was huge for the Canadian team — Erin Mielzynski, Candace Crawford, Phil Brown and Trevor Philp — the 10th seed going into the event. Mielzynski did her part to carry the team, winning all four of her races. “It feels good. We came back with revenge, we knew we could

Austria took the gold medal in the team event. get the medal,” Mielzynski said, agreeing that a fast start is key. “Another important thing in the dual is skiing the ski. You can’t fight it. You have to be clean.” Philp had to face Hirscher in the last run of the final heat, and in spite of a serious bobble that put him in the back seat, he surged on, gaining speed over the two ledges and nearly caught the Austrian, losing by just 0.11 seconds. Crawford also sustained the worse crash of the day, doing a header over the finish line in Canada’s first heat against Germany, but brushed it off to continue racing.

SWEDES GET BRONZE The Swedish team, comprised of Andre Myhrer, Mattias Hargin, Maria Pietilae-Holmner and Anna Swenn-Larsson, put down some exciting runs, including the only dead tie of the event in the first heat between Pietilae-Holmner and the Czech Republic’s Sarka Strachova. The Swedes came in for the bronze medal, defeating Switzerland in the small final.

‘BEST TEAM’ Myhrer pointed out that when the Team Event made its debut in 2005, not many teams approached it very competitively. A lot has changed these days, as evidenced by the A-listers on every team.

Trevor Philp, of Canada, edges hard around a gate during the Nations Team Event at the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships on Tuesday at Golden Peak in Vail. Canada finished second in the event. “I think it’s a fun event. In the beginning, none of the nations were taking it seriously, but now I think everyone is putting together their best team out there,” Myhrer said.

TEAM USA It was Sweden who knocked Team USA out of the running in

the quarterfinals. The Americans, led by Ted Ligety and Mikaela Shiffrin with Paula Moltzan and David Chodounsky, walked over Finland in the first heat but floundered against Sweden, everyone missing gates or skiing off-course besides Shiffrin, who won both of her runs. “This event is amazing. It’s a

lot of fun and it’s good for the crowd because they get to see racing the whole time,” said Shiffrin, adding that she’ll be happy to see the Team Event make its Olympic debut in 2018. “It would be a good twist. It’s nice for ski racing to have an event involving a team instead of just individuals.”

‘Bode Style’ returns at its finest for one more run A month before the start of the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, one of the sport’s most celebrated stars held court with media at The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa in Avon. After two days of training, first on RapTom Kelly tor and then Behind the Gold Vail’s Golden Peak, the jury was still out on whether Bode Miller had recovered enough from back surgery just six weeks earlier to be named to the team. The solid, athletic body that had won 11 Olympic and World Championships medals, seven Audi FIS Ski World Cup crystal globes and 33 individual World Cup races still wasn’t quite ready to race. “I have a good track record on this hill,” Miller said. “But we have a strong team right now, and I don’t want to bump someone out. I have an unusual knack for coming back and getting ready. If it’s possible, I’m probably one of the people who could pull it off. But it takes luck and good fortune. “If I’m ready, I want to race.” Despite skiing only training runs in Wengen and Kitzbuehel, Miller got the nod for his eighth

World Championships. But questions still remained, “Was he ready to race?” “I was pretty nervous in the morning,” said Miller about super-G day on Thursday. His wife, Morgan, sent him a text before the start telling him, “If you’re going to go, ski it ‘Bode Style’ and really send it.’”

BODE STYLE AT ITS FINEST Starting ninth, Miller went before many of the other favorites. And for 59 seconds, the world saw Bode Style at its finest. As the starter’s clocked beeped methodically, Miller drew his focus then pushed out hard into Talon, arcing turns down the icy pitch and slicing through Pete’s Arena at 68 mph. At the first intermediate, the light went green — Miller up 0.11 over Austrian Georg Streitberger. Through Russi’s Ride, Miller continued on a torrid pace — extending his lead to over a half second. It was an inspiring run. As you watched, you couldn’t help but think how Bode Miller had done it again — coming back from all odds. It brought back memories of 2001 Worlds when a knee injury first thrust him into the spotlight. A year later, he was back — winning four World Cups in two months — including The Night Race in Schladming, then two Olympic medals at Salt Lake

A LOOK TO THE FUTURE Ski & Snowboard Club Vail continues to look ahead to the many opportunities that remain for the kids of the community. The long-planned expansion of Golden Peak’s competition arena, a residence center with dormitories and staff residences to attract top coaches and teachers and an Opportunity Fund to ensure that any child in the valley is able to pursue their dreams are important initiatives for Ski & Snowboard Club Vail. Plans to re-develop the clubhouse are approved and ground will be broken pending the sale of the residences on the top two floors that will fund the construction of the new facility for the kids. The organizers of the 2015 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships, recognizing that the members of ski clubs throughout the country are the future of alpine ski racing, launched a video challenge contest just prior to the start of the World Championships to “bring these young athletes,” according to Ceil Folz, “the recognition, and for one lucky club the financial support, to help them continue to follow their dreams.” Ski & Snowboard Club Vail has entered this challenge with an inspirational video, including

Kjus rooting for Maze to tie his world record Norwegian great will compete in today’s legends race By Pat Graham AP Sports Writer

BEAVER CREEK — Lasse Kjus is eager to show he can still race, even if he has to rent his skis and boots to do so. The Norwegian great is competing again at the World Championships. Only, it’s in a ski legends race for charity today, and he has no expectations of earning any sort of medal. Kjus certainly picked up enough of them at the 1999 Worlds in Beaver Creek, when he captured a medal in all five disciplines. Then, it was all over. In the blink of an eye, his left arm hooked a gate, spinning him backwards and sending him cartwheeling down the hill. His ski sliced his leg in two places, leaving nasty gashes. As he came to a rest, he signaled his wife and family in the finish and then skied down under his own power. In the finish line, he transformed from Miller the ski racer to Miller the husband and father. He hugged wife Morgan then held his daughter. His son called out to daddy while the medical team wrapped gauze around his leg. He was stunned from the crash but set ski racing aside, turning full attention to his family. Later that day, surgeons repaired a severed hamstring tendon. The next day, Miller sat down with NBC’s Dan Hicks. When asked by Hicks about retiring, he replied: “I have no idea. I mean, I tried retiring a couple of times and it just didn’t really stick, but at some point enough things conspire together and it does stick. And then, like I said, I’m not one of those people who needs a grand showing off or parade, I just won’t be there. “Have you made up your mind? asked Hicks. “No, I haven’t yet, Miller said. “But I’m leaning pretty heavy toward not — not

going out there anymore. Only time will tell if we’ll see Miller racing again. For 59 seconds last week we were treated to the ultimate in Bode Style — diving down a steep pitch on a direct line, on the edge of disaster then quickly into an aerodynamic tuck, taking risk after risk to shave time — always on the edge of crazy.

WE WANT OUR FIX As fans, we want our fix of seeing Miller attack a racecourse his way again next season. But we also want the best for him. If Miller isn’t in the starting gate at Birds of Prey next December, then we’ll understand. And how does Miller want his career to be remembered? “I hope people see truth when I ski, he told Hicks. “I don’t have an agenda when I’m out there. I don’t try to cover things up or look cool. Skiing is such a raw sport and people pick out what they want to see. “That would be something I would hope would stand out — the honesty of my skiing. One of the most experienced communications professionals in skiing, Tom Kelly is a veteran of eight Olympics and serves as vice president of communications for the Park City-based U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association.
