FALL 2010 | VAIN MAGAZINE 1
Welcome to VAIN, the magazine all about you. Who is VAIN? You are. She is. We are. As you turn the pages of this magazine in anticipation, you are sure to experience a rush of familiarity and resonance as we, like you, take pride in all that we do. We acknowledge the bitter sweetness of your life while applauding your achievements. We pay homage to the adversities you face, filling your head with your words and images to keep you striving for more. We do that daily via vainmag .com…but more on that later. VAIN’s overly ambitious fashion editor and pure wardrobe junkie Lindsey Zalanka, who has a (green) eye for fashion and a love for peacock feathers, put together a Fall Fashion Guide for you demanding dolls so you won’t get lost in the style sauce. So, even if you’re that girl who thinks she knows it all, or you bite off your fab girlfriends, or you don’t have a clue about style, it’s all gravy. VAIN’s Southern-based belle takes pride in her work and gives you all the ingredients, minus the dough, to dress your skin in this season’s best. Go ahead and save the following date, as VAIN is totally committed to you. On the 18th of every month for 2010, you can expect a fresh mag to hit the World Wide Web. Each issue, VAIN will focus on a specific topic, and for the month of October, we will be presenting you with a mag dedicated to breast cancer–related topics ranging from self-examinations, patients/ survivors stories, charities, and more. And because greatness comes in many forms, you have to visit the Web to get your daily fix (vainmag.com). I along with VAIN’s appointed editors will be there sharing rants and raves; beauty tips; exclusive VAIN TV interviews; music, career, survivor and health stories; home decor ideas; food recipes; fashion tips; and we don’t stop there. We believe that everyone is a celebrity in his or her own right, so when we find a great dame or dude, we profile ’em because, well, we like celebrating hotness. We invite you to join VAIN—’cause if you don’t think highly of yourself, why should anyone else? And, you should take pride in all that you do, with love, work, fashion, beauty, mind and world.

MELODY EHSANI MELODYEHSANI.COM Paying respect and homage to the streets is what Melody Ehsani’s fall collection does, and it does it well. The Los Angeles–based designer has taken designs of the past and has made them oh so relevant and hip. Take, for example, her ever-popular bamboo earrings. They were all the rage in the ’80s, but Ehsani managed to bring them back to life in the 21st century with multiple colored rhinestones and colored acrylic nameplates. VAIN adores her double-finger rings, rhinestone tassel earrings, Egyptian symbols and cut-out necklaces that reveal street style mixed with exotic designs.
ESTELLE DEVE ESTELLEDEVEJEWELLERY.COM Estelle Deve, a Melbourne, Australia–based designer, takes throwback to the next level. The lovely Dame adds an earthy and romantic yet rugged feel to her fall collection by binding bangles with stone, cut crystal details, black leather and metal. She has created something “enigmatic and minimal; glacial yet subliminally romantic,” as stated on her website. VAIN favorites are the earlobe-hugging metal earrings and leather ID necklace. Deve found inspiration for this collection in movies and music from the ’70s, especially sci-fi, and appropriately named this season's collection “A Fall to Earth.”
ALEXIS BITTAR ALEXISBITTAR.COM Joan Collins may be the face of Alexis Bittar’s spring 2010 ad campaign, but his fall 2010 collection leaves the aesthetic of the ’80s and leans toward the ’90s grunge vibe. You can expect lots of textured metal, unique shapes and colored stones. Bittar has created a collection that is both nostalgic and new. His crystal-encrusted gunmetal crevice bracelet, gold silk medallion earrings, and gunmetal largeframed hydroqz linked necklace are all perfect examples of this.

FEEL GOOD DENIM
STAY GREEN WITH YOUR BLUE BY SUPPORTING JEAN COMPANIES THAT CARE ABOUT MORE THAN JUST MAKING YOU LOOK GOOD. WORDS BY Lindsey Zalanka
LEVI STRAUSS US.LEVI.COM
LINDA LOUDERMILK LINDALOUDERMILK.COM Linda Loudermilk, the creator of Luxury Eco, has been paving the way for eco-friendly fashion with her Loudermilk Denim line which is more than just jeans, dresses and jackets. All of the fabrics used in her collection are made of sasawashi, bamboo, sea cell, soya and other exotic self-sustaining plants. She prides herself and her company on observing fair labor standards and sustainable business practices. On her site, Loudermilk shares, “We aim to give eco glamour legs, a fabulous look and a slammin’ attitude that stops traffic and shouts the message: ‘Eco can be edgy, loud, fun, playful, feminine (or not) and hyper-cool.’ ” And VAIN agrees. Invest in her eco-fabulous collection.

Created by the denim powerhouse Levi Strauss, Levi’s Eco is made with either all or a large percentage of organic cotton. Levi’s has recreated the staple trucker jacket and it’s a perfect fit for any type of VAIN woman, from the naughty, nice, sporty chick to the chic fashionista. The jacket sits right at your hip and is slim through the body and sleeve. The Eco jean jacket has flap pockets and welt handwarmer pockets in front and is constructed with easy stretch denim, which is made with recycled cotton and trimmed. Plus, the green accents let everyone know that you are a green gal in principle as well as in fashion.
GOOD SOCIETY
GOODSOCIETY.ORG Good Society pays it fashionably forward. They offer an array of styles and washes via sustainable and organic production methods. They also practice Fair Trade Standards while selflessly giving 25 percent of their profits to international compassion projects. This year, they are fully funding a home in Nepal for women and children escaping the sex and trafficking trade. VAIN’s fave wash is the phinney with a slim cut.
