WHY GARY UNION STATION AS AN ARTIST VILLAGE?
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: THE MAIN DESIGN IDEA WAS TO RE-IMAGINE UNION STATION AS AN ARTIST HUB TO BRING ARTIST AND GARY RESIDENTS TOGETHER AND USING UNION STATION AS THE MAIN CENTRAL HUB FOR GENERATING REVENUE FOR REVITALIZATION AND CREATIVE PLACE-MAKING. THE INTENTION WAS TO CREATE A MODE OF INTERACTION BETWEEN THE ARTIST AND THE PEOPLE EMBRACING ART AS A VIABLE TOOL TO STRENGTHEN GARY’S LOCAL ECONOMY
The task given was to re-imagine Gary Union Station located in the city Gary, Indiana, United States, 40 km from downtown Chicago. Union Station building comes under the 10 Most Endangered Places in Indiana. In the 1960s, Gary entered a spiral of decline by the growing overseas competitiveness in the steel industry, which had caused U.S. Steel, which was the main source of city’s economy, to lay off many workers from the Gary area. It further lead to racial segregation, lack of social interaction, crime and violence, economic distress and left many buildings abandoned, union station being one of those buildings. Gary is famous for its talented artists. Thus, the solution was to revive the city by embracing creative place-making by utilizing artist’s talent to improve design and management of public places transforming the city’s image among residents and outside entities.
