REIMAGING THE SACRED REALM
RESEARCH SUMMARY
P e rc e pt i o n of S a c r e d s p a c e f o r U r b a n P arad ig ms of San ct it iy
My thesis began by questioning the idea of a sacred space, how one describes it, and how architecture influences its character. It attempts to understand the various perceptions of a sacred space and digress from the conventional religious connotations of sacredness, thereby interpreting sanctity of place for the urban realm. Today in the urban context, amidst the private and public realms, the sacred realm barely restricts itself to boundaries of worship or solace. Thus, the premise led to identifying Lalbaug as one of the precincts showcasing sanctity in its inherent nature, the indigenous local markets, the theatre culture, and the idol-making culture that form the intangible wealth of the
T A N G I B L E
place aligning its spirit. The tangible structure of the place has lost touch with these intangibilities, slowly dissolving the essence of the place. The proposal envisages a sacred public space that sits amidst the dense urban setup of Lalbaug, celebrating and keeping alive its cultural essence and sacred aura. A public space typology that reconnects the people to sacral experiences in daily life and rekindle the spirit of Lalbaug.

MIXED USE BUSINESS HUB
The project revolves around a very commercial setup, seated in a thriving CBD of our city, Bandra-Kurla complex. The character it possess is that of a foreign city with cycle tracks, wide drive-ways and trees dotted along the footpath. But what remains a paradox is how the cycle tracks are unused, footpaths deserted, large compound walls cutting out all the possibilities of activated street fronts and green spaces being limited and not barrier free. What results, is this Hub losing the touch of a thriving lifestyle. Thus the proposals talks about introducing 3 primary components of functions - Play, Work & Live to make way for an integrated mixed use development. The design intents to create a thriving public place in contrast to the existing context paving a way out of gated communities whilst preserving the privacy of individual functions. The housing masterplan for Ghatshila, Jharkhand proposes a set of row houses (phase1) with a subtle influence of Spanish style architecture, seated amongst lush greenscapes. The villas are of G & G+2 typology, each with lavish balconies and large front and back yards. The spanish style influence adds a sense of simplicity to the spacial character of the villas yet showcasing a playful vibrance and grandeur in their exteriors. The project brief was to plan out a conservation center for the rusty spotted cat. The rusty spotted cat has been one of the endangered species now, thus after rescuing a few cats the Sanjay Gandhi National Park authorities have laid out a plan to open up a center for their conservation and breeding process. In order to design it was essential to understand the nature of these cats. For this purpose we had an interactive session with Dr.Neville who is specialist for conservation in National Park in Australia. The enclosures in conservation centre were designed not merely as cages but offered considerable volume, natural context, series of closed and open spaces to cat to create a healthy environment. The site selected within the territory of SGNP is with variety of existing vegetation, growing vertically leaving sufficient scope of grass to grow within the enclosures for the cat. Contribution: Design development, Architectural drawings, presentation drawings, Site visits, client meetings.

The project is a rest house design for forest officials of Sanjay Gandhi National Park forest department near Yeoor hills, thane. The site is within the core area of the National park, located besides a stream of river with an internal road alongside. Situated amongst the forest the site offers beautiful views of the natural setting with a water body on one side and dense vegetation on the other. The design was planned such that it could capture the views of the beautiful river and forests around. Contribution: Design development, Architectural drawings, presentation drawings, 3D modelling.

The primary aim was to analyse the neighbourhood of Lohar chawl premise. To map its street character, important nodes, landmarks, districts and edges. This project enabled us to observe, analyse and identify the character of an old precinct. It gave me an insight on what urban interventions can be employed in order to preserve its nature and overcome the issues related walkability, gated edges, poor public front. Hence holistically rethinking public zones in older localities. Semester 6 Group Guide : Ar. Priya Kanchan, Ar. Mildred Tinto
