“Batter-up” for Carmichael Senior Summer League Softball By Jan Dalske
Are you an active “senior”? Would you be interested in having fun while you get some exercise? And, while having fun, and getting this exercise, would you like to have the opportunity to meet other active seniors from your area? If your answers are yes to all of these questions, then, the Co-ed Slow Pitch Softball League invites you to join them. The Summer League Registration takes place from May 14th to June 8th. The games officially start on 6/22/18. This senior league is for experienced senior players who enjoy a competitive environment. But, they will also enjoy the fun and friendship that comes with playing softball. Future players should have some knowledge of the game and “reasonable” softball skills. Recent playing experience is not a pre-requisite. Some of the players have been involved with slow pitch softball for many years, while others have resumed or started play-
ing after taking many years off. Women must be 45 years of age and older, and men 60 years of age and older to be able to join the teams. If you meet the age requirement, are physically able to play and are looking to meet other seniors who are also interested in getting some good, fun physical activity in a fun playing environment, this league may be a great fit for you. When you sign up they will ask you to indicate your softball skill level, which will determine the league level for playing. You will also be asked about any particular positions that you may have played or would be interested in playing. Now is the time to get signed up for the Summer League. If you have questions, please contact Bob Tuttle at 916-768-5124. You can sign up or get more information on the website at www.carmichaelpark on the adult sports page.

Carmichael student competed on ‘Jeopardy!’ By Laura I. Winn
Jessica Rea has been watching “Jeopardy!” for as long as she can remember, but that doesn’t mean she always liked it. For the 25-year-old Carmichael student who competed on the June 19 episode, her earliest memories of the trivia show are of hating it. “I didn’t know any of the answers, but my parents did. It was boring,” she said. For years, Rea watched “Jeopardy!” with her parents, but she was really just waiting for it to end, so she could watch “Wheel of Fortune,” a show “where I actually had a chance,” she said. But by the time she was a student at Winston Churchill Middle School in Carmichael, Rea found that she could answer some of Alex Trebek’s clues, and the voracious reader started to enjoy the show. During her freshman year of high school at Mira Loma, Rea tested for the Teen Tournament and made it to the auditions round. After graduating from St. Francis High School in Sacramento, Rea tried again to get on the show, this time representing UCLA as a classics and history double major for the College Championship. She
made it to the live Los Angeles auditions, but wasn’t selected for the tournament. Rea continued to watch the show while finishing up her degree programs, including a post-baccalaureate in classics. From the comfort of her couch, Rea said she would think, “Hey, I’m pretty good at this. I should be on the show!” So Rea tested once more, this time for regular competition. And finally she made it through every step. “ Third time’s the charm, I guess,” laughed Rea. To prepare for her game, Rea practiced buzzing in with a clicky pen, but didn’t bother brushing up on any specific trivia because the show covers too many topics to zero in on any one, she said. Like
most contestants, however, she knew which categories she did not want to appear at the top of the game board: The Bible and what “Jeopardy!” itself sometimes calls, “ The Dreaded Opera Category.” When game day came, neither opera nor The Bible popped up, but Rea was unprepared for one that did–Frank Sinatra. She also quickly realized that practicing ringing in with a clicky pen is not the same as the electronic buzzer, which she had to mash hard to beat the triggers of her competitors. Rea said she was also surprised by how quickly the entire day went. Before she knew it, the game was back from its first commercial break and she was talking to Trebek about the dolls she has collected from around the world. Rea has traveled to over 30 countries with her family, who own Pacific Flooring Supply Company, a Sacramento-based business since 1952. By the end of the first round, Rea only had $1,200 and was in third place. “I knew so many answers, but I couldn’t ring in fast enough. But that’s how it is. Everyone knows all of the answers,” she said, echoing what past contestants have said.
During the Double Jeopardy round, Rea got a better handle on button mashing and landed in second place with $10,200. Only $800 separated first from third. When Trebek announced “20th Century American History” as the final category, Rea felt confident and and bet $8,500. But the clue “On Nov. 3, 1948 he sent a congratulatory telegram, then told reporters: I was just as surprised as you” tricked Rea and the returning champion, who both guessed Truman. Thomas E. Dewey, the surprise loser of the presidential race, was the correct choice. Despite feeling the final was a bit of a trick question and that the game had questions that were tougher than usual–a feeling many have shared with the classics scholar–Rea said she is proud of what she accomplished. “In the grand scheme of things, not many people have been on ‘Jeopardy!’ And I have.” As for her $2,000 second-place winnings, Rea, who would like to teach Latin, said while most of it will stay in savings, she might indulge in an impulse buy. When the mood strikes, she’ll buy “something special,” just because she can.

Congratulations Class of 2018! Jesuit High School Principal’s Note: The Class of 2017 is a remarkable group of young men who have certainly left their mark on Jesuit High School. They have modeled what it means to be proud and dedicated Marauders and Men For Others. This class reinvigorated school spirit through their kindness and brotherhood. The underclassmen have looked to this class for leadership and courage, and they have received both. I am pleased to be able to read their names at graduation and I am thankful for how this class shared their gifts with all of us. I wish these young men the best of luck and God’s blessings. –Michael Wood ’99, Principal, Jesuit High School

Salutatorian’s Address Dear Lord, By You we have been taught that… “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails” … so says Corinthians 13: 4-8 Of our time together, You bestowed us with 630 days of instruction, with 3780 hours, with 226,800 minutes, with 13,608,000 seconds of instruction. If ordinary, You bestowed us with what may be recognized, basically, as school. But if our time of school, if our time at Jesuit, if those 630 days did us any good, we know that all of that time is more than ordinary, more than just instruction. It is memories, and laughs, and triumphs and tribulations, it is struggles and anxieties, but also the small things that made all the difference. Our time at Jesuit has been a time of friends, and not just of friends but of brothers, and not just of brothers, but of love. Because from our studies of language, and the sciences and mathematics and history, and from our pursuits of literature,

theology and the arts… from retreat, immersion, service, and games, competitions, and shows and concerts… from these things... from our 630 days... We know that Love never fails. So as we come together today in celebration and remembrance, we come together at this moment to thank You for the love. To thank You for the love that is family who have supported us like no other. To thank You for the love that is the faculty and staff who have made possible so many occasions that will live as great memories. To thank You for the love that is our teachers who have instilled us with not only knowledge, but a wisdom that we will carry for the rest of our lives. To thank You for the love that is our friends next to whom we sit. The friends with whom we have laughed and cried, with whom we have strived and succeeded, whom we have trusted and been trusted by in return. We gather in this moment to thank You for the love that has transformed friendship into brotherhood; for the time of love that has been Jesuit High School. We pray in thanks today, Lord, because without you… without it, without love… we would not be the Men For Others that we are today. Amen. Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Pray for Us. In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Stage Right Productions brings to life the warm tale of strong women with Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias Stage Right Productions in Fair Oaks, opens its 2018 summer theatre season with Robert Harling’s comedy-drama Steel Magnolias, running July 5-15 at the Stage Right Performance Space, 4000 San Juan Ave. in Fair Oaks (on the Faith Lutheran church campus).
