“I spent many weekends running my booth, selling my pies and sitting on the grass making friends with other vendors and my customers. Th is is why supporting the Carmichael Parks Foundation was a no-brainer for me to choose as my nonprofi t for my campaign for honorary mayor.”
Current honorary mayor
Julie DePrada-Schott, the chamber’s executive director, told the ArdenCarmichael News that with the service that Izzy Delancey, the current Carmichael honorary mayor, has given to Carmichael, the new honorary mayor “will have big shoes to fill.”
A resident of Carmichael since 1960, Delancey recalled days when people rode horses down California Avenue.
Delancey, who attended the now-defunct La Sierra High School, and American River College, would ride her family’s horse to Ancil Hoffman Park, where she would meet her friends and ride along the park’s 3-mile walking path.
Although she eventually left Carmichael and spent 20 years in Texas, Delancey returned to Carmichael and became a Realtor.
She currently serves as the committee chair of regional meetings for the Sacramento Association of Realtors.
DePrada-Schott, in a statement provided to the chamber, wrote about her charity of choice: How2LoveOurCops (H2LOC).
“Sometimes it seems the entire world is against police officers and, by extension, their families,” she wrote. “Saturation of a mad, bad and sad career culture is overwhelming. Injury, death and the emotional toll become a reality in their lives.
“H2LOC aims to be positive in the midst of trouble. The H2LOC is about learning, keeping up with the latest research and listening to the hearts and thoughts of the law enforcement families across the U.S., Canada and beyond.”
A longtime tradition
DePrada-Schott noted that having an honorary mayor in Carmichael is a longtime tradition.
Research for this article revealed that the first honorary mayor of Carmichael, Ross Davidson, was elected in 1976. He was also then-serving as the chamber’s president.
It is noted in the June 23, 1976 edition of The Sacramento Bee that Carmichael’s honorary mayor’s race initiated as an attempt to “spark community involvement and rivalry among the various clubs to raise funds for charity.”
The chamber’s website lists past winners back to 2002, when Margie Smith held that title.
DePrada-Schott mentioned that, at one time, Carmichael also had an “honorary dog catcher.”
“I don’t know what that position entailed, because all it says is ‘Are you applying for honorary dog catcher or honorary mayor,’” DePrada-Schott said.
Although DePradaSchott told this paper that the chamber does not have a plan to reinstate the honorary dog catcher title, she remains open minded.
“(The honorary dog catcher title will not be reinstated), unless I found out it was something really cool and you have to have it,” she said.
