EL CARTOON #2 A QUARTERLY PUBLICATION, PROUDLY CREATED ON THE US-MX BORDER IN EL PASO, TEXAS Christmas Away From Home is a story based on the comics and characters of Jamie’s Jungle, an educational comic book series that teaches children about the importance of taking care of our environment. The stories take place on a hidden island, far away from humans, called Jungle Springs. Endangered species from all around the world have fled their native habitats, many of which have been destroyed, to live in Jungle Springs—a safe, new home for all animals.

Dear Cami, I’m sorry that I couldn’t bring world peace for Christmas. I know just how much you wanted your wish to come true but please don’t be disappointed. I am hopeful that this wish will come true one day. Until then, I brought you a brand new ukelele. You have the amazing gift of musical talent and a great, big heart to go with it. You can do great things with those gifts, you know? So use your voice. Sing. Make music. Do all of the things that you love best! Spread kindness and don’t ever be afraid to speak up for what you believe in. Share your gifts with the world, Cami. Maybe, if everybody did that, one day we will finally see world peace. Stay Warm,

Santa

LEARN MORE ABOUT...

GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE I

n this episode of Jamie’s Jungle, we met our friend Kelvin the Polar Bear. Kelvin used to live in the North Pole, until the iceberg that he was standing on became separated from the main land! He then traveled on the melting ice to find new friends in Jungle Springs. Since then, Kelvin has missed his home greatly and

has discovered that ice and glaciers are melting throughout the world due to warmer temperatures--a result of global climate change. The earth is meant to change occassionally, but this time, it is changing because of human impact. Greenhouse gases caused by burning fossil fuels have caused warming - 37 -

throughout the planet. (12) Industries, cars, and other things that we use can cause pollution, which is bad for the environment and animals like Kelvin. In fact, the decrease in ice can cause the loss of two-thirds of the world’s polar bear population in the next 50 years! (13)

Ways you can Help YOUR PLANET * Pack your lunch in a lunch box, not a paper or plastic bag. If you do that, you will eliminate how much trash is dumped. * Don’t use so many water bottles! Water bottles are easy to carry around, but many of them end up in the trash. Just like paper and plastic bags, they must be made and are thrown away in the end. If you do use a water bottle, use a non-plastic one or please remember to recycle! (14) * Walk instead of drive! Sometimes, walking can be annoying but it’s great exercise! If something is only five minutes away by foot, ask your parents to take you walking! Walking is good for you and you can also enjoy the beauty of Mother Nature. Biking is great too! * Turn it down! This holiday season, bundle up so that your heater isn’t so high. In the summer, try to turn your A/C down too. Stay comfortable in your house, but there’s no need to turn those things up so high! * Be informed! Always know about global climate change and what’s going on in the environment. When you know more, it is easier for you to spread the word and make a change! (15)
