Kidderminster College Kidderminster College is perfectly placed in the heart of the town. Kidderminster town centre consists of four shopping centres all in close walking distance of each other linked with traditional high street shopping, with a good mix of restaurants and bars alongside independent and national retailers. Weavers Wharf is a modern retail park located just two minutes walk from the College, consisting of 23 shops which includes Marks & Spencers, Next, TKMaxx and Debenhams. The town centre also hosts a number of annual events such as the Kidderminster Arts Festival.
Learner life is about more than just work. Here at Kidderminster College you’ll be joining a vibrant learner community, with plenty of opportunities to get involved with clubs and activities.
Open Evenings for our full time courses are held every year in October and February. These are an opportunity for you, your parents and friends to visit the college, meet the staff and see firsthand our outstanding facilities and obtain information on the qualifications and courses available. They will be advertised in the local press and on our website nearer the time.
The Students’ Union is an organisation run to support learners, provide entertainment and organise activities throughout the college. All learners are entitled to join the Union. You can also apply for an NUS card, which entitles you to discounts at many shops. All learners are encouraged to get involved in running the Union. Remember, the more you get involved, the more you are likely to get out.
The college offers a varied and creative menu in a relaxed atmosphere at its cafe bar, which serves a wide range of hot and cold snacks, full meals and beverages in addition to vegetarian and healthy eating choices.

When you receive your exam results we have a team of staff able to give your help and support about future options – whether you have received grades higher or below what you were expecting. We work closely with Connexions to provide advice and guidance about our courses and future study options.
At Kidderminster College, we are keen to provide recognition for the academic and personal achievements of our learners. Our annual Awards Evening is a chance to celebrate your success along with your friends, family and college staff. We offer awards in all subject areas, so whatever you are studying, you will have the opportunity to work towards an award. To win an award you don’t have to be he brightest in the class or the best at everything. We do of course recognise ability, but we also reward good attendance, effort and team skills.
Our Creative Industries learners provide some fantatstic entertainment throughout the year which you can have the opportunity to enjoy. Take a look at www.yourkctv.co.uk to sample the vibrant atmosphere which is distinctive here!
Kidderminster College has its own hair, beauty & holistics salons on campus called ‘Elements’ – newly extended and refurbished. They offer hairdressing services, beauty treatments and holistics therapies. Learners, under the supervision of staff, offer treatments to the general public at very competitive prices.

All learners have the opportunity to join and participate in the Sporting Academies and/or activities run throughout the year at Kidderminster College. The Football Academy has been running for over 9 years, with college staff working alongside players and football club management to provide the best coaching and instruction. The teams have been very successful with some learners progressing onto a higher level. Our Golf Academy is run in conjunction with Kidderminster Golf Club, a high quality 18-hole golf course, situated within and surrounded by beautiful Worcestershire countryside. Learners will have the exciting opportunity to develop their skills with PGA qualified golf professionals. Kidderminster College also provides opportunities to try other sporting and leisure activities such as Netball, Badminton, Body Pump, Kick Boxing, Fencing, Taekwondo and various outdoor pursuits. Wednesday afternoon is allocated for participating in college sport; therefore most teams play on this day.

At Kidderminster College we appreciate that our learners are individuals with different strengths and areas for development where you may require additional support to overcome challenges. The Additional Learning Support Team is here to help you to achieve your learning goals. Areas that you might need help with: • Some practical help with your studies; many learners are not 100% confident with planning and doing assignments or aren’t quite sure what is expected of them • You may have a physical mobility, hearing or sight impairment • You may have a condition such as Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) • You may have a specific learning difficulty such as Dyslexia, Dyscalculia or Dyspraxia • You may have medical or health issues such as Asthma, Epilepsy, Cerebral Palsy, Diabetes, ME (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) or Mental Health Difficulties, Depression • You may need some help with your exams (extra time, reader, scribe, separate room, prompt, rest breaks) Whatever the challenge or obstacle, the Additional Learning Support Team is here to work alongside you and provide you with practical help and support. Our experienced and trained staff are committed to working inclusively, using a variety of methods to meet learners’ personal needs across a range of difficulties and disabilities.
People with dyslexic traits can have difficulties with reading, organising and processing information. Often their difficulty can go undiagnosed in school and it’s not until they have an assessment that they discover the reasons why. If you suspect you might be dyslexic, your tutor can arrange for you to have an assessment here in College. We have specialist Learning Support Facilitators (LSFs) on hand to provide support and offer strategies to help you learn. Learners with dyslexic difficulties may be allocated a LSP to take notes for them in class, have support for reading and extra time in examinations. Richard Branson, Jamie Oliver, and Tom Cruise are just a few of the many famous and successful dyslexics who haven’t let dyslexia stand in their way.
We can arrange for the loan of specialist learning aids or equipment you might need such as: • Laptops or netbook computers • Assistive technology (read-back and voice activated software) • Specialist computer hardware • Digital voice recorders and MP3 players • Coloured computer screen covers • Coloured overlays
Learner Support Practitioners (LSPs) work with learners in the classroom. LSPs are there for a number of reasons and support learners in different ways by, for example, taking notes, helping learners understand the main points of a lesson, or by organising their work. Learners negotiate how they would like to be supported through discussion with their tutor and the LSP.

You will NOT have to pay tuition fees if you are: • aged 16 -18 • aged 19+ and are studying for your full Level 2 qualification • aged 19 – 24 and are studying for your first full Level 3 qualification • studying Literacy or Numeracy as part of a Skills for Life programme • in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance or Employment Support Allowance in the Work Related Activity Group • unemployed and need skills training to help you enter work
You will HAVE to pay tuition fees if: • you are aged 19+ from 1 September 2012 and none of the above applies to you This will be an annual fee of £700 and can be subject to change. If you are enrolling on a two year course you will have to pay a fee* at the beginning of year one and again at the beginning of year two. *Fees are subject to change and reviewed annually
The Government bodies which provide the College with most of its funding for your full time course – are reducing their contribution to the costs of running some courses for learners aged 19+ from September 2011.
Government priorities in adult learning skills have meant that only priority qualifications are being funded and consequently reduced funding is available to support other qualifications. Colleges have a central role in creating opportunities for millions of people and improving the economy and this role is reflected in a demanding set of Government targets to increase the number of adults, for example, with basic skills, first full Level 2 and 3 qualifications and more employer-focused training. Therefore colleges are now expected to review the mix of courses they offer and the charges they make for 19+ full time and part time courses in order to make up the income shortfall. Government pressure in this area has, therefore, resulted in reduced funding for some courses, even though there is demand for them locally. Unfortunately, the college will have to pass on some of this cost to 19+ learners as well as to employers. It is now the Government’s policy for those learners aged 19+ to increase their financial contribution towards the cost of their education and training. The impact of this is being felt in colleges nationally and all colleges have introduced charges.
Yes, you can pay in 3 instalments in the autumn, through a Direct Debit arrangement with your bank. However there will be an administration charge to set up the direct debit in the region of £15.

We are committed to working with professional practitioners to enrich learners’ artistic vision and enable them to reach their full potential. Recently professional actors such as Richard Lee-Berke and Daniel Hawthorne have been invited to direct major College productions: this involvement with industry professionals provides an excellent introduction to the world of work. Ex-Led Zeppelin star, Robert Plant, is patron to the College’s independent record label MAS Records. Robert joined forces with his fellow band member, Kevyn Gammond, a music lecturer and course leader at Kidderminster College, to help talented learners to progress in the music industry. Learners have provided the support slot for Plant’s own gigs, and he donated a previously unreleased song to feature on the first MAS compilation CD. Most of the output of the MAS label is recorded and produced in the customdesigned and built recording studio. This digital facility is the nerve centre of the Music Technology courses. For over 20 years we have produced learners of the highest calibre in this ever-expanding field who go on to establish themselves within the business as engineers, producers, artistes and performers in their own right.

Don’t just take our word for it, read what some apprentices say about their experiences:
Tom walker, business & administration Tom Walker started on the Business & Administration apprenticeship programme in October 2010 following successful completion of his ‘A ‘levels. Having decided against going to University, preferring instead to focus on getting a job with training, Tom was looking for a business administration apprenticeship with a technical/ engineering bias as he had completed his Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations under the Young Apprenticeship Programme at Bewdley High School. Tom is delighted with his progress and is very happy with his decision not to go to University.
Two years later Georgina Common joined the department and completed the same frameworks. Two years ago, Alison Sanders joined the Business Unit as work with employers expanded and is our current apprentice. Alison has also completed her level two apprenticeship framework in Business Administration and is nearing completion of her level three Advanced Apprenticeship
