Shocking behaviour really, but they do fish them all out eventually, take them home, wash them off and then pack them away until next year’s Thame Duck Race. It’s a fun annual event now and with the weather playing ball for once, a big crowd followed the ducks along the river bank and had a lovely walk in the sunshine. Summer season

S

ummer could possibly be the most exciting time of year in real fashion terms – that is the clothes that you and I are actually wearing, as opposed to what is seen on the catwalks and from designers. Not much feels better than the warmth of the sun on your skin and some bright colour to send any leftover winter blues hiking off into the sunset. So what’s hot (and what’s not) for high summer - along with some useful tips for putting looks together for summer holidays.

Gallivant Marc Cain Ash Tribal Slides £169

House Of Fraser BIBA Katia Gold Sandal £79

Feet first Shoes are a really easy way to add colour to your wardrobe, come the warm summer months. Glitter, sheen and sparkle can quickly add a touch of glamour to a simple maxi dress or summer shorts. The ubiquitous Birkenstock-style are available in a range of designs in colours of the rainbow, without comprising comfort. More on the fashion front, elegant animal print wedge sandals that are much easier

to wear than a strappy heel. Shoes really can make or break an outfit - and probably the question I am most often asked in styling sessions is “but I don’t know which shoes to put with it.” As a general rule of thumb, tone your footwear

Skirt the issue Skirts are a great summer staple, easy to wear and available in looser, longer styles that have been around for a while. Team a skirt in colour with a neutral top, or if you prefer print look for tonal colours within the print to discover a new colour combination with your top half. Culottes are also still big news - if you haven’t tried a pair yet, give them a go. And if you’re still not sure - refer to the above, your shoe choice will make the world of difference in how they look. There are straight and fuller styles in structured and more fluid fabrics. So, if the first pair you try are not a good look, try an alternative design. Once found you could be converted!

A very current and flattering way to rock a cropped look without appearing like you are simply wearing trousers that are too short. Another tip - don’t just go for black. A colour or print which is lighter will be more flattering for most. Bag it up A lighter bag is a real essential in the summer, as there is often more to pack in - drink, sunscreen, hat (scarf, cardigan - it’s still the UK after all!). Again a bag is a great opportunity to add a bold colour and experiment with your personal style. Prints, appliqué and tassel are all available this summer which gives everyone the opportunity to express their personality. My favourites are the colour and sparkle transforming

Oh la la, c’est trés chic!

I

t can be quite hard to find old and interesting French vintage in this part of the world. Often the main importers are on the coast, so it’s taken me quite a while to discover the amazing place that is The Old Flight House, in Weston on the Green, Oxfordshire. The owner, Sally Dunseath, sets a very high standard, her own units at the front of he huge emporium - pastel, faded grandeur, shabby french chateaux items, with a highly romantic and classic feel, setting a beautiful example of how to display in your own home. This former Royal Flying Corps building now houses 70 unique sellers, with a variety of vintage, antiques, homewares and clothing plus the benefit of a really great cafe and florist. There’s an eclectic mix of European and English, with the units concentrating on good display rather than the over crammed and junky feel of some antique centres.

Janice Issitt

Making the most of it

You can often find highly collectable retro, sitting alongside farmhouse salvage and industrial re-purposed. The pace and atmosphere is slow and conducive to a wander and mooch, stop for some lunch and coffee then go round one more time. Situated opposite the airfield,

the centre has additional parking round the back and is open seven days a week. It’s a haven for interior designers and people with an eye for style - I have friends who travel up from London often now as the prices are so reasonable! Set your sat nav for OX25 3TJ

and allow yourself plenty of time to explore and savour, maybe treat yourself to a home-made burger or salad, some cake and tea. I always come away with something to wear, flowers and a new treasure for my home or photos, it’s a home stylist’s paradise. l Read Janice’s blog at: http:// janiceissittlifestyle. blogspot.co.uk where she posts photo tutorials about things to make and lovely pictures of life in the Vale.

One of our area’s most fascinating boutiques is Holy Cow Home. Crammed with unique and unusual items for the home, for gifts, or to wear, it is run by the lovely Poonam who has to be the friendliest, happiest, bubbliest shopkeeper ever. Pop in for a browse - she may even pour you a cup of Chai tea...

W

inner of last year’s Aylesbury Vale Business Awards ‘Best New Business’ category, Holy Cow Home, is only two years old but already a popular stop for those seeking something different. Handmade, Fairtrade, recycled and reclaimed is the mantra here and with an eye for style and quality, owner Poonam Gupta has curated a quirky and colourful lifestyle collection that will inspire and delight, if you love the different and the unique. Poonam was born and brought up in London of Indian heritage - her father was from Lucknow in the north and she spent a couple of years there, aged 11 to 13, which she describes as a real adventure! Her husband is a GP in Tring and when her two children reached school age Poonam decided she would get a part-time job, or maybe start a shop... “I’d been an accountant before I had children but wanted to do something different,” she says. “So I started selling handmade ‘lost wax process’ brass sculptures from India and it grew from there.” Buying from Fairtrade importers to ensure goods were ethically sourced, Poonam first sold on the internet and then sublet a section at the back of her current shop, finally taking

Poonam shows off a sari shawl over the whole store two years ago. “I have some really old pieces and some pieces that are new but made from old, recycled materials; some designed to look new and some to replicate the old! It’s a lifestyle shop for those who like things that are unusual and unique, not mass produced.” Holy Cow Home is an eclectic mix of furniture, furnishings, mirrors, traditionally carved screens, ornate benches, amazing chairs, gifts such as; handmade Fairtrade silver-plated and gold-plated jewellery; vases, pots; scarves and shawls (pure silk and cotton, hand Kantha-stitched); clothing, greetings cards, drawer and door knobs; colourful, saricovered handmade khadda paper notebooks and journals; block printed handstitched cotton tablecloths; handmade candles and diffusers; Moroccan lamps, lightshades and glasses; Incense sticks, cones and burners; Hessian bags, and items made from recycled plastic bottles which are turned into thread and then woven into bags, rugs and throws and feel and look exactly like organic textiles! There are vintage sari quilts and throws;

Nepalese goat leather bags; and scented beeswax tea lights in little clay pots, which support a children’s charity helping the Dalit people or ‘untouchables’ and lovely, quirky, decorative and original little 19th Century sandstone niche shrines. Larger items include a reproduction cart wheel, an old grinding table and beautiful, traditionally-carved, reclaimed wood screens, tables, benches and cabinets. And shopping in Holy Cow Home you can’t fail to notice the store’s stunning Lakree floor made from blocks of reclaimed Indian hardwoods such as Mango, Teak and Jackfruit. It’s extremely hardwearing with stunning variations in colour, well-seasoned and held together in one metre squares with a tough canvas backing. It won’t warp/shrink or swell and the sections are easy to lay and remove, adding an instant wow factor to your home (£125 per m2 from Holy Cow Home). There’s items from a few pounds to a few hundred pounds and the stock is constantly changing: “The items are not mass produced,” says Poonam, “so not available in large quantities. I think my favourite is a colourful, patchwork armchair, which is currently on display at a small concession I have taken in a pop-up department shop in Bristol. I am happy to source items for customers too, so if you don’t see what you want here, please ask.” Poonam actively promotes her business. She advertises, posts on social media, sells via the internet, exhibits at fairs and show (she will be at the Bucks Country Show in August) and as a little sociable extra is thinking of brewing free Chai Tea on a Saturday, to welcome customers and add to the fun of a browse around the store. “I make my own recipe,” she says. “with herbs and spices chosen to enhance your shopping experience!” l Holy Cow Home, 6 Cambridge Street, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, HP20 1RS Tel: 01296 485158 Email: office@holycowhome.co.uk Web: www.holycowhome.co.uk Social Media: holycowhome Open Mon-Sat, 10am-5pm. Have you the time?

T

he origin of the word watch may be from the Old English word ‘woecce’ – used by the town ‘watchman’ or from 17th century sailors who used them to time the length of their shipboard ‘watches’. The watch evolved from portable spring-driven clocks in 16th century Europe. In the 17th century watches began to be carried in pockets instead of worn as pendants because, it is said, Charles II introduced waistcoats in 1675. This was not just fashion, as watches were delicate and easily damaged. The shape evolved and became round and flattened to fit into pockets – the typical ‘pocket watch’. These were the most common type of watch until wristwatches became popular after World War I when a transitional design, the trench watch, was used by the military. The first wristwatch may possibly

WWI Trench Pocket Watch and Leather Case

Gun Metal Trench Watch have been when an officer asked a blacksmith to put metal lugs on his pocket watch, possibly during the Boer War. It is generally agreed that the idea of strapping little clocks to soldier’s wrists came about in

1917 WWI Silver Trench Watch SADA Watch Co, Brienne, Switzerland World War I. Pocket watches were put into cupped leather straps and worn on the wrist as early as 1885, securing the wristwatch’s place both in military history and at the pinnacle of men’s jewellery. Our May-Jun edition’s mystery

Not everyone has a washing machine or tumble dryer and those of us that do are often short of time, making it difficult to keep on top of the laundry. Could The Laundry Hub be the answer to your prayers...

T

he smart blue and white livery of The Laundry Hub has recently appeared in the middle of the Walton Court shopping parade at Hannon Road. The refurbished units there have all been filled now and it’s become a thriving neighbourhood centre. “I hadn’t realised quite how many people do frequent the shops here,” says Madge Dauris, owner of the new business. “There are very few laundrys in the Aylesbury area and this is a convenient spot, not only for Walton Court people to use, but for those driving from other parts of town too, as it’s easy to stop and drop off your laundry for a service wash, or to park for free while you do it yourself. You can combine it with some shopping at the Co-op, have a hair cut or pop to the pharmacy, it’s a very useful parade of shops.” The Laundry Hub is a stylish modern launderette with state-of-the-art, coinoperated washing machines and tumble dryers in a variety of sizes to suit your load. There is free wifi and a television to watch and during the day (9am-4pm) staff are on hand to accommodate those wanting to drop off or collect items for service washes, ironing or dry cleaning. You are welcome to operate the machines yourself or, if you prefer, the Laundry Hub team are happy to wash, dry and fold your washing for you - prices start from £11 for

up to 4kg, including detergent and softener. They offer a same day or next day service and also a pick up and return service within a five mile radius - ideal for busy professionals or those who would find it difficult to transport their washing to the Laundry Hub during the day. “Our machines are the latest Electrolux technology,” says Madge. “They have super efficient water filters to minimise the energy, water and detergent needed to clean your

clothes properly. The washing machines are in three sizes: 9kg, 14kg and 20kg while the tumble dryers are in two sizes, one that can manage a single duvet and one that can cope with a double or king sized duvet. “We aim to offer a reliable and professional service. I have two staff, Stacey and Sammy, who are on hand to offer customers help, advice and assistance when needed and to provide change for the machines. “Customers are welcome to wash their clothes at home and just use the dryers here if they wish. They are a good size, so you get lots of hot air circulating inside the drum and your clothes dry more quickly. A range of shirt services are available: washing, drying, ironing and folding, or just ironing and we also offer a dry cleaning service. “We can provide commercial services for hotel linen, work clothing, sports kits and so on, so please get in touch if that sounds of interest. The only thing we don’t wash here is dust sheets. Please feel free to pop in or phone us if you would like more details.” l The Laundry Hub, Walton Court Centre, Hannon Road, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, HP21 8TJ Tel: 01296 706398 Mob: 07553 953458 Email: olhltd@gmail.com Open 7 days a week: 8am-8pm Service washes: 9am-4pm Vale Life : Jun/Jul 2017

Amanda Trott

It’s good to try something new but would an organic facial with pure, clean and green products be the perfect way to prepare my face for the Summer...

S

ometimes not following the majority, but doing your own thing, can make you stand out from the crowd something Amanda Supple, owner of The White House, Beauty and Holistic Health in Thame, has decided to do. Some 30 plus years ago, Amanda qualified as a Decléor trained beauty therapist, and has been faithful to the brand ever since. Recently though, she took a leap of faith and now works solely with Ermana and Tropic, both of which are 100% natural botanical products, free from parabens, preservatives, unsustainable palm oil, formaldehydes, alcohol, gluten, lanolin, chemicals and micro beads. Taking a holistic approach to all she does is very important to this experienced therapist. Amanda invited me to her salon to sample her bespoke White House Deluxe Facial, which is designed uniquely for each individual client, using a combination of both Tropic and Ermana skincare. She took me to her favourite room, a light airy space, with stripped wooden floors, a beautiful old fireplace, vases of fresh flowers and enticing looking displays of beautifully packaged products. Refreshingly, rather than the usual salon relaxation music, playing softly in the background was a mellow blend of acoustic guitar and vocals, courtesy of her very talented nephew Josh Supple. Starting with a Tropic hot bamboo cloth to open the pores and prepare my skin, she double cleansed with a combination of smoothing cleansers and balms which were so gentle they could be used over the delicate eye area. Exfoliation, the next step, was done with 16

The combination masks work their magic Tropic’s Face Smooth Brightening Polish, made up of minute spherical bamboo beads, so gentle on the skin. Once removed with hot mitts, Amanda then massaged my face, neck and décolletage with Ermana Renew Face Oil which had the soothing scents of neroli and ylang ylang amongst others and Ermana Comfort Balm, which had a deliciously chocolatey fragrance due to its Cocoa Butter content. Heaven! The wonderful combination of Amanda’s expert touch and the beautiful fragrances

Vale Life Amanda, left, looking fresh faced after her facial with White House Amanda drifting around the room soon had me dozing. Next came a combination of masks to suit my different skincare needs, which after 15 minutes of working their magic were removed, once again using hot mitts. Finally Amanda applied a combination of wonderfully fragrant spritzes, elixirs, and moisturisers to seal in all the goodness. After a very relaxing 60 minutes my skin really did glow, but not with

the stripped back redness I’ve occasionally experienced after a facial and would want to cover with make-up, before venturing out in public, but with a healthy radiance. And the results lasted - even the following day I was happy to leave the house with nothing on my face other than a smear of lipstick and a smudge of mascara! Amanda is a Tropic ‘Ambassador’. She uses the entire range within her beauty treatments and can purchase individual products by order for her clients. Tropic has been awarded the Vegan Society and Cruelty Free International Bunny symbol, something very few products have. And one phone call to Ermana and she can have products made to order and delivered the very next day! Amanda chose both product ranges for their originality, both are British, and both are made to order in very small batches in England. Ermana is actually made locally in Claire Twigge-Molecey’s kitchen in Great Haseley, and Tropic, in Susie Ma’s Beauty Kitchen in Surrey, both are natural, botanical, organic, not animal tested and totally clean and green. If you are looking for a refreshing beauty treatment, with a non-invasive, holistic approach, then pop in to see Amanda at The White House, you’ll be glad you did! l The White House Beauty and Holistic Health,

n 1912 Joseph Pilates lived in England working as a circus performer, boxer and selfdefence instructor. During the First World War, he was interned with other German nationals and during this time developed his own technique of physical fitness by teaching his fellow internees. Still using the same techniques and movements the Pilates of today can be an aerobic and a nonaerobic form of exercise. It requires concentration and focus, because you move your body through precise ranges of motion. Pilates lengthens and stretches all the major muscle groups in your body in a balanced fashion. It requires concentration in finding a centre point to control your body through movement. Each exercise has a prescribed placement, rhythm and breathing pattern. Pilates is a series of exercises, which focuses on 6 principles whilst performing the moves: breathing, concentration, control, centering, flow and precision. It is a non impact discipline which can be

performed on equipment or mats. By focusing on moving all aspects of the spine through various exercises, it will help to improve movement, flexibility and strength. Exercises focus on small, precise movements which are effective as they are so specific. Weaker muscle groups are strengthened and stronger muscle groups are encouraged to relax, building a stronger, balanced and posturally aligned body. Pilates is widely used in sport amongst athletes, tennis players

We have our eyes and teeth checked regularly, so why not our hearing? It’s just as important and there are several conditions for which an early diagnosis can be crucial in preventing permanent hearing loss. Vale Life Editor Charlie Trott, visits Aston Hearing at Thame for some ear advice...

A

ston Hearing was established in 1989 by audiologist Susan Webster, who felt a professional alternative to the NHS was needed. She set up a practice at Aston House in West Wycombe and her specialist expertise and high ethical standards soon proved popular, attracting patients from a wide area. Sue retired from the business in 2008 and now her daughter Kate and Kate’s husband Duncan run the company, with the help of a small, knowledgeable and dedicated team. Both Kate and Duncan are qualified audiologists and fill the roles of practice manager and managing director, respectively. Vale Life : Jun/Jul 2017

“We’ve been here just over a year now, it’s a lovely town centre location and I especially enjoy our monthly ‘Hear Today’ coffee mornings in Thame Town Hall. We like to offer advice and information out in the community and these drop-in mornings are a great opportunity for people to come along and ask questions and perhaps meet our customers who are there for ongoing support or to hear one of our themed talks. Aston Hearing is not just about equipment and expertise - care, counselling, coaching and support is a very important part of what we do.

Karen Williams (Audiologist). “I absolutely love being an audiologist, it’s such a privilege. That might sound strange, but when you can meet a person who is angry, upset or bewildered and feeling isolated from life because of hearing difficulties and then, using a combination of skill, training, technology and care, turn their life around, it’s a wonderful feeling. “People can literally, lose their lives, if they are having hearing problems. Those suffering hearing impairment don’t not hear at all, it may sound like everyone else is speaking a foreign language and they can’t make out what is being said. We can help them recognise what is going on and their families too, so they can understand how best to help - and it’s not by shouting! “Most people suffer hearing loss as a result of ageing - the hair cells in the cochlea degrade over time. Some do so from exposure to loud noise - not so much in the workplace these days, it’s more young people playing their headphones too loud. Chemotherapy can also impact on hearing as can some strong drugs for certain conditions, viral attacks, head trauma, there’s many different causes. “When someone comes in, we are not looking to sell them a product, it’s more about hearing care and advice. Often the solution can be to make them aware how they can help themselves more and if we do recommend a hearing aid it will be part of a whole jigsaw

puzzle of help and support.” “Our work is quite varied,” says Kate, “from testing the hearing of toddlers and children to working with tinnitus sufferers and doing practical things like earwax removal. “The treatment of hearing problems is constantly developing. It is not just the technology but understanding how the brain interprets information from the ear and handles sound, which effects the way you hear. “It is possible to work with people to improve the way they process incoming sounds and to help them to listen more effectively - to improve the cognitive part of listening. So we not only ensure a good clear sound is received but we coach people to interpret that information well and thus to actually hear better. It’s not just a technical solution now. “Some people experience a sudden onset of tinnitus or a hearing loss, which can be due to a variety of reasons, some minor, some more serious. There is a viral infection of the inner ear which, if diagnosed immediately, is treatable within 24 hours, but after that time it

may be too late! “If anyone has hearing or ear concerns they are welcome to give us a call. You can come in and have a hearing check. If there’s nothing wrong you’ll have your hearing data on record to compare future information against and see if anything has changed. “A full hearing and communication assessment costs £60 which is refundable against the cost of a hearing aid should you require one. Children can be tested from 10 months old with costs ranging from £45 to £60 depending on what is involved and the kind of reports required. “We work closely with GPs and ENT departments and can refer medical issues to the relevant place and supply our audiological reports, which speeds the process along.” See the Aston Hearing website at: www. astonhearing.co.uk for more information, or call the Thame branch on: 01844 396057. l Aston Hearing Services, Cobbles Yard, 112 High Street, Thame, Oxfordshire, OX9 3DZ Tel: 01844 396057 Website: www.astonhearing.co.uk Email: hear@astonhearing.co.uk

Ear wax removal service

T

here’s a saying that you shouldn’t put anything smaller than your elbow into your ear but I’m afraid, like many others, I can’t resist the occasional cotton bud! Probably as a consequence I occasionally experience a build up of wax, so while I was visiting Aston Hearing it seemed sensible to take advantage of their wax removal service. You get an hour appointment with a fully trained Clinical Ear Care specialist or Audiologist (Sereta for my visit) during which time they use an operating microscope and a finely calibrated suction device to gently suck out any wax or debris (bits of cotton bud in my case)! Extra interesting is the fact you get to see inside your own ear as the image from the microscope comes up on a computer screen and you can then compare its condition

before and after. The cost is £60 for one ear, £70 for two which seems great value and a good chance for the operator to visually check the condition of your eardrums and canals. In my case the left ear, which felt OK, had a large, lump of hard wax wedged deep in the ear (probably due to my probing). This was duly removed and definitely sharpened my hearing slightly on that side. Surprisingly when Sereta showed me inside the left ear, which felt blocked, there didn’t seem to be any

wax but she thought it was inflamed and might have a slight infection, so I was to come back in a week or so having applied some Ear Calm spray. A few days later it’s already feeling slightly better. They are a friendly, welcoming bunch at Aston Hearing and I’d recommend their ear wax removal service, it seems excellent value for the attention received and can provide instant relief if you are having problems. magine not being able to see enough to read this magazine. There are an estimated 23,000 people living in Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes with sight loss. However sight loss doesn’t mean you stop living or enjoying your life and BucksVision is here to support people to do this. We offer a range of services including practical support on using new technology; advice and information on equipment; befriending, reading and shopping services; and social activities. We run one off Experience Days to local attractions or the theatre and we also have a fabulous team of volunteers who run social clubs across the county for our members. However keeping active and fit when you have sight loss can be very difficult which is why BucksVision also has various groups which help our members get out and about. We have had a volunteer led walking and fitness group in Milton Keynes for many years, as

BucksVision

A BucksVision guided walking group enjoying a ramble. well as a number of established Bowls Groups. And more recently we set up a Tandem group in MK and a Walking Group in Aylesbury. You may have seen the Walking Group featured on BBC Oxford News back in January, since when we have grown in size both in terms of members and volunteers, but we are still looking for more! The Walking Group meets up for a guided walk, with transport and

sighted guides provided, on the last Saturday of the month at various locations across the Vale and Chilterns. We have now been on nine walks at various locations. Bucksvision wouldn’t be able to run these groups without the support of their volunteers. Here walk leader Alison tells us why she joined as a volunteer: “I really enjoy walking and running,” she says. “Being outside

in the countryside is a treat for me, no matter what the weather! “I no longer work, so I decided I would like to get involved in volunteering and having found out about BucksVision it seemed a natural step for me to get involved as a Walking Guide for people with sight loss.” If you are interested in joining the fantastic volunteer team at BucksVision, as a Walking Guide or in one of their many other roles, or you would like to find out more about the services BucksVision provides, please get in touch on: 01296 487556 or email: reception@bucksvision.co.uk

Clear up Fungal Nail infections with Clearanail For years treating fungal nails has been a challenge for podiatrists. This very common condition causes nails to become unsightly, thick and uncomfortable. Unfortunately traditional over-the-counter treatments are largely ineffective, because the active ingredients cannot generally penetrate deeply enough into the nail to get at the whole of the infection. Clinically proven Clearanail is an innovative new concept using Controlled Micro Penetration, which creates micro pathways into the nail plate, allowing deeper access to the areas of infection without damaging the nail bed beneath. Each of the tiny holes can be drilled in less than five seconds, using an intelligent drill that can sense when it is through the nail plate. These holes allow the topical treatment, which must be applied regularly, to reach the infection effectively. Only one treatment is needed, so this

remedy is considerably cheaper than laser treatments. Patient testamonial “I had nail fungus for 10 years. Two toenails were severely disfigured although I had tried about every over the counter remedy available. I had a consultation with Jenney Klose at Feet First Clinic and decided to give myself a Christmas present and try her Fungal Nail Treatment. Six months later I am really happy with the results as my nails are perfectly healthy now!! It’s worth the money and the time.” Linda Emery, former Mayor of Thame

aying back on the bed as the whirring of the needle filled the room I smiled excitedly into my phone as John Capasao began work on my latest coverup tattoo. Speaking to over 2million people across the world via Facebook Live was the perfect distraction from the 5hr session, to cover the scar on my wrist, from a mole removal, with three beautiful roses, that signify my family. I’ve been coming to John of RedInk Aylesbury for five years now and have amassed 15 tattoos taking around 50hrs to complete body art that I will love and cherish forever. I started out tensing my way through tattoos years ago, feeling the pinch of the needle, closing my eyes and counting down the minutes until it would be over, often having to stop for a break to relax and sit still again as my toes curled and I clenched my fists in pain. Fast-forward to today and I’ve never been more relaxed about

Tracy’s scar

Cover up tattoo tattoos, the pain doesn’t change but my mindset certainly has and there’s nothing more motivating to get you through an afternoon of needles than inviting the world to join in with the experience. John is quite accustomed to live-broadcasting our tattoo sessions and I was placed 2nd in the Pure Elite bodybuilding UK Championships as a Tattoo Muscle Model at my first show in April this year. Since I began using tattoos as a way to cover my pregnancy

stretch marks and injury scars I’ve had a wonderful response from the public. From new mothers with caesarean scars to bodybuilding men with stretch marks on their arms; to realise you’re not alone with your concerns and that there are other people going through the same and achieving positive results, is both heartwarming and inspiring. It can be embarrassing to make public your body’s flaws and faults, but if we can become more openminded, more accepting of others and less judgemental then there’d be no need for such insecurities. My live broadcasts attract hundreds of thousands of viewers from across the world at a time - including a man from the same village in the Philippines as John which was lovely! The public can ask direct questions, give realtime opinions and make suggestions throughout. With the Wimbledon Championships taking place from July 3rd to 16th, tennis season is truly upon us. Freelance journalist and former Editor of Tennis World magazine, Alastair McIver, here muses on the ‘sport of kings’, tennis clubs, Wimbledon tickets and how best to cope with tennis fever...

W

here will you be this Wimbledon?’ Wherever you are in the UK, there is one fortnight on the sporting calendar like no other; those two sunny – sometimes showery - weeks in the British Summer when the nation takes to its armchairs to watch the Grand Slam champion of tennis events. Yes, Wimbledon is just around the corner and for us who live in Aylesbury and surrounding areas, the rich lawns of SW19 are about to be transported into our living rooms once again. And when Wimbledon comes knocking on our doors every year, I have found that the best course of action is simply to open up, and welcome it in. Of course, if you are lucky enough to have got hold of a ticket, then you will be one of half a million plus fans who can enjoy that rarest of treats - a sunny day out at The Championships. But for most of us, we have to make do with watching it on our TV screens or listening to it on the radio. But hey, that’s not such a bad thing, is it? The Wimbledon fortnight offers us a great opportunity to gather with friends and family to watch the tennis, or, for those of us who still aspire to a Nadal forehand, a Konte backhand, or a Murray lob, to get out and play. Aylesbury Vale is blessed with a number of fine clubs, not least Aylesbury, Thame, Haddenham and Halton Tennis Clubs, the

latter of which is one of twenty Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) Performance Centres. They are all competitive and social, not to mention vibrant and welcoming. So how about digging that old and trusty Wilson (tennis racket) out of the cupboard and wandering down to the local tennis club or park courts for a comeback game? Whether you want to play outdoors or indoors, under floodlights or out in the sunshine, Aylesbury Vale clubs are welcoming to all. Open days, local school partnerships, disability programmes, children’s courts and coaching, visit and play, ladies mornings and club nights…it’s all there. No one is excluded. What’s not to like about tennis whatever our age, gender or standard? My own dear mum lobbed her way around the court with her contemporaries well into her seventies - and I hope to follow her example, joints permitting! And with all that on offer at our local clubs, there is no excuse not to give it a go. However you define yourself, ask yourself the question: ‘is this the year of my comeback? If your answer is ‘yes’, you’d be in good company.

If, however, your answer is ‘no’, and you feel, however reluctantly, that your playing days really are over, you can still engage with tennis people by joining a tennis club socially and watching the teams play their matches on balmy summer evenings. They are great places to gather throughout the year, especially in the summer months, pint of Chiltern Gold in hand, to watch the tennis – whether on the box or in the Bucks or Oxon leagues. My own club regularly invites members to visit the club on match days to watch the first team battle it out with rival clubs. Getting on board and supporting the local club’s teams is as much a participating sport as playing for the local club is, in my view. For those who prefer the armchair comforts of home, while feasting on Wimbledon, we might well ask the question, ‘what can we do to participate in the world’s greatest tennis tournament?’ Well, lots, actually. Wimbledon offers us the chance to put our feet up, cup of tea at the ready or glass of Pimms (light on the lemonade please) in hand, TV tuned in to Sue Barker for wall to wall coverage of The Championships. And did I mention that great and enduring doubles paring…no, not the Bryan brothers,

but…strawberries and cream? What Wimbledon would be complete without these champions of summer? Why should ticket-holders have all the fun? Invite your friends and family around this summer for a tennis party, and participate in the greatest tennis show the game has to offer, right there in your own

llergic reactions are your body’s way of offering protection from something perceived to be a threat. Hay fever, which is estimated to affect one in five people in this country at some point during their life, manifests itself when tiny pollen particles irritate the eyes, nose, mouth and throat, kick starting your natural immune system. The response is an overflow of chemicals designed to prevent any potential infection spreading. As a result sufferers are plagued with those classic and irritating symptoms: runny noses and streaming eyes. Allergies may be common but by adopting an holistic approach to health, asserts Nutritional Therapist, Maria Bray, you create a strong physical foundation, lessening the odds of succumbing to unwelcome reactions. “Good health isn’t just about what you eat but your whole

Hayfever? lifestyle from keeping fit to sleeping and even being social. You need to know your own body.” Maria champions the influence of all life’s aspects as well as food intake, particularly at this time of year when allergies are prevalent. “Medically hay fever sufferers need to take antihistamine but there are foods which are high in histamine such as red wine, peppers and tomatoes. Quercetin – a herb found naturally in onions, garlic and leeks – is helpful for hay fever sufferers though levels in foods may vary depending upon the quality of soil, age of food and storage, all of which affect nutritional value. Supplements, on the other hand, offer guaranteed portions in concentrated form. They are useful as a short term treatment though Maria advises a visit to your GP to discuss allergies. Minor allergic reactions often go unnoticed during periods of good physical, mental and emotional health but are much more obvious when your underlying wellbeing is not up to par. t Community Impact Bucks we work with over 500 charities or community groups every year. Some are thriving and expanding and some are in difficult times. I’m often asked what makes a successful organisation and, in my opinion, it boils down to strong leadership. Without good leadership an organisation will not succeed long term. Where the leaders have vision and passion, the organisation is more likely to succeed. Strong leadership also brings with it a robust plan to create funding and without this a charity can easily, and quickly, fail. One charity that demonstrates strong leadership is the Princes Centre, an award-winning community run day centre in Princes Risborough, offering support to older people with dementia, or those who feel isolated and in need of friendship,

Manager Kim Challinor as well as younger people with learning disabilities or who suffer from mental illness. The Princes Centre has been run by the community since 2012 when a charitable foundation was established to save the centre from closure. To begin with, funding for the new charity was far from certain, as centre manager Kim Challinor told me. “We’ve always had a five-year plan, but initially we were

just looking to raise enough to keep the centre open. It’s been a roller coaster ride but we’ve done the hard, hard work. Thanks to the way our community responded to us, and under the leadership of our trustees, we’ve built up our reserves and our five-year plan is now truly a five-year plan. Our future looks rosy.” The Princes Centre isn’t unique in that its leadership comes from its trustees; a team made up of people with passion, enthusiasm and skills which make all the difference to the running of the Centre and who spend time meeting the clients and understanding the massive benefit they get from coming to the day centre. And what difference does having a sound financial base make to the Centre’s clients? Well, lots actually. It means that those things which are nice to have, can be bought; plants for the garden, comfy armchairs, outdoor garden games

Nick Phillips

Good to give or even nail varnish. As Kim says, “It’s these nice things which make the Centre what it is, it creates new opportunities for our clients and makes them feel so much more special.” This June the Princes Centre is celebrating its fifth anniversary, something which back in 2012 would have been thought impossible. And thanks to the dedication and skills of Kim and her trustees I’m sure they’ll be around for many more years to come, continuing to make a difference to the people who need them. Fiction Book of the Month: The Girls by Emma Cline It’s the start of summer in Northern California and Evie Boyd, an average teenager, feels lonely and bored. She meets a wild group of girls in the park who seem to be all about having fun and being free. The year is 1969... the cornerstone for drugs, sex, and rock’n’roll. Evie gets mixed up with a cult with an alluring singer-songwriter leader who manipulates his followers into a dark world of violence - a story based on the Charlie Manson cult. Most of the best writing in this book is about adolescent female insecurity. Cline is fabulous at identifying those needy vacuums in which self-destructive behaviour can take root. There’s no doubt that Emma Cline can set a scene really well, and the narration has a wonderful, self-reflective quality to it. Waterstones Children’s Book of the Month - Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll Brother and sister Olive and Cliff are evacuated from London to a small fishing village in Devon during WW II. Their father has been killed, their mother appears is grief-stricken and their older sister has gone missing after a bombing raid. Carroll conveys the relationship between these two younger siblings beautifully; Olive’s love and care for her little brother is palpable. The story also encompasses themes of empathy, tolerance and kindness. Carroll has excelled in bringing to life thoroughly believable characters, capturing an authentic voice for her narrator and weaving an exciting plot which captivates you from the earliest pages. l Reviews by Diana

T

eamwork is one of those buzzwords that doesn’t mean much if you don’t know what you’re trying to achieve with it. Buckinghamshire Business First (BBF) recently undertook a refurbishment of our office and business hub space in Saunderton, and opened a new office in Aylesbury town centre complementing the hub we already have in the town. These changes required our team to go through a period of patient adaptation, something they managed superbly thanks to their respect for each other, dedication to the BBF cause and, yes, teamwork. And what were we trying to achieve? Our aim is to be more efficient and flexible in how we work day to day and have a greater reach across the county we work in. If teamwork within an organisation can help smooth

Porters Lodge hub, Aylesbury transitions, increase productivity and raise morale, what else can it achieve? How about teamwork within Team Bucks? I like to think of Team Bucks as all of us – the resident, the worker, the business owner, the volunteer, the fundraiser, the student, the councillor, the MP – that have a stake in this county. We all have the responsibility to spread the word about how great Buckinghamshire is as a place to live, work and study. First, you need to know how well Buckinghamshire is performing. Well how about this? In 2015 our

productivity as a county was such that a worker in Buckinghamshire produced in five days what it would have taken a worker in Greater Manchester six and a half days to produce. According to a Centre for Cities report, Nottingham, Newcastle, Liverpool, Birmingham, Leeds and Sheffield also come up short compared to Buckinghamshire’s productivity. Additionally, data from the Office for National Statistics shows that over half of all businesses formed in Buckinghamshire in 2011 were still trading in 2015. This four year survival rate is the second highest in the country, and 9% above the national rate. Teamwork creates great outcomes such as these, and teamwork can help to spread the word. What are we trying to achieve? We want more entrepreneurs starting businesses, more businesses growing, more

people finding jobs that they want and need, more businesses relocating to Buckinghamshire, more students coming to our universities to study, more homegrown students staying here to use the skills they learnt here in our local economy, and more tourists choosing Buckinghamshire as their holiday destination. Visit bbf.uk.com to learn more about what’s going on in Buckinghamshire, then pass on the good news to everyone you come across to let them know that Buckinghamshire is the place to be. l Philippa Batting is MD of Buckinghamshire Business First (BBF), working to support and facilitate success within the business community. ith an increasing trend to holiday in the UK at the moment I thought I’d focus on ways to get that summer vibe right here, whatever the weather. Plus, there’s so many great products for the garden at the moment; from outdoor sofas, cushions and rugs to floor lamps and Ronseal garden paints, that bringing your style into the garden has never been easier. See the garden as an extension of your home, choose items that look like they are

meant to be inside and you’ll end up with a great outdoor space in which to linger and entertain. Start by thinking about the mood or atmosphere you’d like to achieve. Colour is a big player here with bright colours adding vibrancy and energy, whilst muted and neutral tones keep things calm. Who doesn’t like reading on a beach holiday? Create reading nooks back home with hammocks, hanging seats and parasols - loving this shaggy one below (Hammock £135, Mandisa Parasol £225. Design Vintage),

furniture (try Design Vintage) for a more casual boho vibe, or use vintage inspired crockery, glassware and even outdoor crochet table ‘linen’ (Rockett St George - from £6) for a little touch of formality. Benuta have a great range of outdoor rugs that will add instant colour, texture and pattern to the patio or deck. These include faux

sisal to kilim and the plastic type you may remember from the 70s! My pick is the Star Kilim from £34.95. And Wayfair, Ikea and Maison du Monde stock good selections of outdoor cushions. Planting - I’m not a garden designer but I do like to play, applying the same design principles to my outdoor space as I would the interior. Think texture, balance and colour, noting planting conditions. I enjoy mixing lush green textures, from Buxus to hardy Banana Plants, Palms, Ferns, Grasses and Bamboo (clump, not spreading variety), or use a root guard/pot. I team these with dashes of architectural plants like Iris, Alliums and Hebes for pops of colour - in a restrained palette of purple and white for me - and add different woods like decking or decorative wall panels and a blackstained pergola [coming soon] to echo the black slate and oak indoors. See how green really pops against the black, making it a great backdrop for tropical schemes. Continued on page 32

Do you need a VPN?

A

VPN is part of your online security and privacy toolkit. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. Originally this software was used by companies to allow staff a secure connection into their private corporate network. With a VPN service, you install software on your computer or phone and an encrypted link is created between you and the VPN service. An analogy might help with understanding how a VPN works - imagine when you connect to a website, the two computers are connected by a piece of string. With an HTTP connection, it is like sending beads along that piece of string. Anyone “outside”, such as your ISP, the person running the coffee shop wifi access point, or a hacker, can inspect all of the beads and see what you are doing - not good.

how long etc.

Using a VPN service, your secure “hosepipe” is only ever connected to the VPN computers. The VPN service handles the ongoing connection. All anyone outside will see is this connection and has no way of knowing where your traffic goes next.

Using an HTTPS connection (when you see the green padlock in your browser), is like putting an opaque hosepipe around the string. Anyone outside can still “see” the connection, but they cannot tell exactly what is being transmitted. They can still gather quite a bit of information though, such as: which websites you visit, when and for

Is there a downside? The primary one is trust. Even though the VPN service protects you from external snooping, the service itself knows all about your online behaviour, although all good VPN services commit to not log any information about your surfing. The other one is performance. All of your data is being encrypted on your computer and then passed through the VPN service. A good VPN service should only add 5-10% overhead which is not noticeable in normal surfing.

Andrew Marshall Tech spec

Which VPN to choose? A quick online search, for VPN or VPN reviews produces a whole host of results. A good starting point is a website called, That One Privacy Guy. It provides a very comprehensive analysis of all of the popular VPN services. Expect to pay a fee for a good VPN. Quite a few offer a free trial . I consider VPN as an important part of my online security and privacy package. You should too. l Software and technology expert Andrew Marshall is Founder of Digitwell Solutions Ltd, a mobile application development company. l Column ‘In the Garden’ with

Naomi MacKay

Water, water everywhere W

e’ve had a really dry winter and early summer has proved pretty hot and dry too (ironically as I write this the raindrops are pitter-pattering on the window!) but a lack of rainfall means the soil in our gardens can be drier underneath than it should be and we need to be wary of our much-loved (and let’s face it not cheap) plants, dying of thirst. Here are five useful watering tips as we head into summer: 1) Water more thoroughly, less often. Giving plants a quick splash each evening only allows moisture through to the top of the soil, and doesn’t encourage root growth. Better to spend a couple of evenings giving everything a through soaking, than a halfhearted attempt every night when you get home from work.

inspiration for George Eliot’s novel Felix Holt, the Radical. The work at the mill was arduous and there were newspaper reports in the 1830s of boys being excessively beaten by the mill superintendent. Conditions at the mill gradually improved, facilitated by the various Factory Acts which sought to regulate working conditions and reduce working hours, especially for children. In January 1836 there was a large fire at the mill, started accidentally by a lighted candle, which destroyed the upper two floors. The estimated loss (covered by insurance) was

£6000. It resulted in many of the workers temporarily losing their jobs and having to seek poor relief. Another fire in 1842 also caused extensive damage. The silk industry gradually declined in the second half of the 19th century, not helped in 1860 by the lifting of a parliamentary ban on the import of French silk which had been in place for 100 years. With changing fashions and cheaper finished silk available from abroad, the numbers of silk mills in England fell sharply. In the later 1800s Tring Mill was owned by Lord Rothschild of Tring Park, who ran it at a loss for some time, to prevent his employees losing their jobs but it eventually closed in 1898. It was later converted into a generating station and the site is now run as a trading estate with a number of small businesses based there. l Cathy Soughton is a professional genealogist and architectural historian providing family history and house history research in the local area. t finally happened! The 29th May saw the much anticipated release of Whiskey & Wine from my acoustic duo A Little Bit Country. The debut album, which has been 18 months in the making, was premiered at a special live show at The Aristocrat, Aylesbury on Sunday 28th May. After signing to BFS Records in the summer of 2015, we have been working tirelessly, recording the album while building a strong and ever growing fan base, performing at shows around the UK and beyond, including a tour of Nashville at the end of 2016. We will be returning to

A Little Bit Country ‘Music City’ in November 2017. Harriet and I gave our followers

and fans a taste of the album when we released our single, Shot At Loving You, in October last year and it had a great response, I’m happy to say, receiving a host of positive reviews and multiple radio plays worldwide. To date Shot At Loving You has achieved 87,000 plays on Spotify alone and we are pleased to see that Whiskey & Wine already seems to be taking off in a similar fashion. The album is available on CD from our website: www.albcountry.co.uk and in digital format from iTunes, Amazon and other online music stores.

Heartstops

irthday Card are a local band - formerly known as Run With The Hunt - who have recently released their new single Heartstops and so far it’s doing very well on social media and I can hear why. From that first guitar riff, I was transported back to my teenage years (yes I know that was a very, very long time ago) and bands like Deacon Blue, Prefab Sprout and even The Lightning Seeds sprang to mind (perhaps a little early Britpop too). I felt very comfortable listening to it. It was like receiving a visit from a long lost friend! Heartstops is a very catchy tune too - both the guitar and the vocal melodies are easy on the ear and it’s got a real feel-good vibe. I have a feeling it will be in my head for days. Let’s hope it gets the rotation it deserves. Check the band out for yourself at www.birthdaycardband.co.uk

s is often the case at this time of year, there is not a great deal of theatre going on in the local area. In fact, the only major production taking place in a local venue this month seems to be the Tring Festival Company production of Arthur Miller’s Pulitzer Prize-winning classic Death of a Salesman (21st - 24th June) at The Court Theatre, Tring. Other than that, it looks as though we’ll have to be turning to London for our theatre fix for the month - which is fine by me, considering the gorgeous weather and wide show selection! The first opening of the month is one I covered in Vale Life last year, but was then cancelled due to the star falling pregnant: my idol and six time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald headlines the London transfer of Lanie Robertson’s iconic play Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill (from June 17th, Wyndham’s Theatre). Theo Collis has landed the role of the boy himself, Oliver, and describes his character as poor, polite and cheeky, he explains he’s no stranger to the Waterside: ‘I played the dog catcher in Annie in the Second Space earlier this year’. He is however, new to the showbiz world: ‘I have only been performing since the beginning of the year, but love acting because you can be anyone you want to be’. Vivo D’Arte prides itself on the highest quality theatre experience, driven by our passion for the development of all our participants.’ The young stars are an ambitious bunch with a shared drive to play many iconic characters after Oliver! Casey is keen to continue with leading lady roles: ‘Eponine in Les Mis has always been a dream role of mine, alongside, for the future, Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers. I’d love to be working in the industry doing 8 shows a week!’ Theo’s also not fazed by big parts: ‘If I could star in any musical, apart from Oliver! In 2014 Nicholas and Alexandra Verney took on management of Claydon Estate from Nicholas’s parents, Sir Edmund and Lady Verney. With backgrounds in property, events, fine art and luxury goods, the ‘young Verneys’ have developed their vision of Claydon Courtyard and gardens as a thriving visitor attraction with an excellent tea room and buzzing community of artists, artisans, galleries and studios…

laydon House at Middle Claydon, between Aylesbury and Buckingham, has been the seat of the Verney family since 1620. In the 1750s, Sir Ralph Verney set out to create a country house of extraordinary grandeur to dazzle his wealthy neighbours at Stowe. Today the interiors that remain are among the most ambitious and lavish created in the 18th century. Although only part of the original building remains there are magnificent state rooms, extravagant rococo architecture, elaborate carvings and stunning interior woodwork to be seen, all quite unique to Claydon. There are also delightful gardens and a church to discover - beautiful herbaceous borders, attractive pools, an extensive walled garden and an unusual Edwardian glass house, plus the Florence Nightingale Claydon House (Pic by John Miller © National Trust) centenary garden, a woodland walk and gorgeous views over Claydon’s parkland premises. All the small things T he appeal of texture and detail first surfaced in Diana Sheldon’s work during her employment as a Woven Textiles Designer for John Lewis. Over the interim decades her artistic focus may have changed but minutiae remains her calling card. From repetitive patterns and shading to three dimensional aspects of crumbling architecture, Diana’s intricate watercolours hone in on fragments of an object which might otherwise go unnoticed. “I only ever paint those things I have an emotional reaction to or which excite me,” she says. “I see things in pattern and colour rather than the subject. I like dark shadows, contrasts of light and painting close up, zooming in. My love of architecture comes from my A Level History of Art days.” Holidays in Italy are similarly inspirational. Whilst images of Mediterranean pots overflowing with geraniums retain an iconic

Diana Sheldon status, for this Stewkley artist flowers, once favoured in her early painting days, are now irrelevant. “Textures and shapes of pots appeal to me. One of the first paintings I sold at the Royal Institute was a group of terracotta pots. I’m constantly thinking of the next RI exhibition because the competition is great. I’ve also had work exhibited in the Mall

Galleries. I’m a member of Bucks Arts Society and enjoy mixing with like minded people.” Following sketches in situ and taking photographic images, back at her studio across a small courtyard from her house, Diana begins with a wash matched to the lightest tone in her composition. After a pencil sketch she works colour over the whole image, focussing on “rusty bits” before building up glazes and washes of colour. She details texture before finally adding shadows. The importance of this final stage, she asserts, is crucial. “In Italy once, we were looking for somewhere to eat and I saw some gates, but the sun wasn’t in the right position; there were no shadows. We went off for lunch and walked back the same way. That’s when I took photos because the sun was right. A painting is nothing without shadows. I love that feeling when you have a three dimensional image.”

Purvis ‘Not that Peter Purvis’

Did you enjoy that?! R ecently I appeared, as a guest on Nick Coffer’s BBC Three Counties Radio show. I’d been invited on to talk about how my stand-up linked in with my experiences of mental health issues; Tears of a Clown, that sort of thing. I explained how I found doing stand-up liberating and cathartic and, after my first few nerve-shredding gigs, not actually that scary. I’d first had the idea of doing stand-up some years ago, during a role-playing session - part of a training course to become a counsellor. I’d successfully played the blind-date scenario for laughs and it gave me a real buzz: Certainly, more of a buzz than the rest of the rather grim post-grad course at Birkbeck College, which imparted its orthodox Freudian theory using teaching methods that wouldn’t have been out of place in a Soviet Gulag. For example, one year we had an agenda-less ‘experiential’ conference - a sort of boot-camp for rookie therapists

- where you’re exposed to the raw emotional angst of several hundred other students, all desperately seeking to try and find out “what it all means”. I never did find out, but ended up ringing Samaritans one night, suffering from a bad panic attack, which says all you need to know about that course. I don’t work as a therapist these days... Anyway, whoever briefed Nick (me, via his producer) managed to get a few wires in a twist and Nick seemed to think that this roleplaying experience had occurred during my own group therapy, after one of my breakdowns. I didn’t want to contradict Nick on air, so waxed lyrical, and imaginatively, about my group therapy experience: Mind you, it wasn’t difficult to bend the facts; outside of stand-up comedians, psychotherapy students are some of the most emotionally and psychologically damaged poor souls you are ever likely to meet! People who listened to the interview were kind enough to say

I did well, although no-one said I was funny. Probably because I wasn’t funny. But at least nobody asked me the dread question put by other stand-ups when you come off stage after doing considerably less well than ‘smashing it’: “Did you enjoy that?” To which, I feel like answering: “Yes, I love performing to an audience on whose faces the mixed emotions of boredom and anger are outweighed only by that of pity.” I was quite anxious before the radio interview, and not exactly at ease during it, despite lovely Nick doing his best to calm my nerves. I was reminded of how I’d felt on the day of my sixth and final (unsuccessful) driving test, many decades ago. I suppose I might have expected someone interviewing a stand-up comedian to ask them to tell a joke, but it had never occurred to me. So in reply I stumbled over a bit from my usual stand-up introduction, which is frankly much more about the ‘deliberately awkward’ visual

Apple and almond frangipane ‘rose’ tart

I

do love a good television food show! Going back all the way to pioneers like Keith Floyd, I just cannot get enough of them. In recent years of course, the country has rediscovered its love of baking thanks to Bake Off and now we have the professional version, Crème de la Crème. One of my Weekend Kitchen regulars, Reece Collier (head pastry chef at the Grove Hotel in Watford) recently reached the semi-final of the competition with two of his very talented colleagues. Of course, the programme is all about show-stopping desserts but Reece also loves simple bakes. And this beautiful tart of his is simplicity itself. It’s worth taking the time to decorate it properly, creating a rose effect with the apples – it really is an impressive treat to serve to your guests. Ingredients 500g ready-made sweet pastry 100g ground almonds 25g custard powder 2 whole eggs 100g caster sugar

In the kitchen Nick Coffer

Apple and almond frangipane ‘rose’ tart 100g unsalted butter (plus a little for glazing) 8-10 apples of your choice. Make sure they are a nice, uniform round shape (red skinned ones work really well here) Method: Roll out the sweet pastry. You don’t want it to be too thick. Line the tart tin (don’t trim it yet). Pop it in the fridge to chill. Now make the frangipane. Cream together the butter and sugar using a food mixer (or elbow

grease and a wooden spoon). Then add the eggs and, finally, mix in the almonds and custard powder. Spread this directly into the tart case and neatly trim the edges of the tart, using a flat sharp knife. Take your apples. Cut them into quarters and remove the core from each quarter. The key here is to cut the apples in such a way that all the slices are equal in size and shape. You want to thinly cut each slice, down to the point of the apple quarter. This will mean that all the slices are identical.

Starting from the outer edge of the tart, lay the apples at a 35-45 degree angle (skin side upwards) and go round and round the tart in a spiral, until the whole tart is full and you have created a pattern like a rose. Brush the apples generously with some melted butter and bake in a pre-heated oven at 160C/Gas Mark 3 until the apples are golden and the pastry cooked. This will take 20-25 minutes. l Hear wonderful recipes on Nick Coffer’s Weekend Kitchen every Sunday morning on BBC Three Counties radio at 11am. You can also join Nick weekday afternoons at midday for music plus local guests with great stories.

No beef with Morris bulls

B

eing the wife of a beef farmer, I like to see nice chunky cattle with solid rear ends and a stocky appearance - dairy cattle look a bit anorexic with their protruding hips and bony appearance. So, when the chance came to view the Dorcas herd of Charolais cattle in Long Crendon I was very keen. The Morris family (John and Rosemary with their son George and his wife Claire) have a commercial herd of 300 lovely white Charolais cows and hosted an open day for the South East Charolais Club, attended by dozens of farmers from across the region. We watched a presentation on carcase confirmation and grading by James Dickson, a livestock buyer with the ABP food group; took a tractor and trailer tour of the fields full of cows and calves; and saw a demonstration of the handling system the Morris’s use. The Morris’s use a specially designed race for handling their cattle, based on the principals of Temple Grandin, an American

George, Claire, Rosemary and John Morris professor of animal science, who has done a lot of research on cattle handling and reducing stress. Although the herd is pedigree, the farming business focuses on the commercial ability of the breed, and the Morris’s rarely show their cattle, as it is too time consuming. The family run the farm with help from one full-time employee and one self-employed man. Their breeding programme is pragmatic and geared towards making everything as easy as possible. Cattle who do not fit into the criteria are culled from the herd. Basically, they want easy

calving, cows with plenty of milk and a good teat size, and cattle with placid temperaments. We have had three Charolais bulls from the Morris herd over the years and they have shown the best temperament of any of our stock bulls, an essential trait when dealing with animals that can weigh over a tonne. And of course, it is a very desirable trait to pass on to their progeny, making for a far more docile herd. The Morris’s run a closed herd and never buy in stock. This helps enormously in terms of protecting the health of their cattle. They use 11 of their own bulls to serve most of the cows and heifers and refer to their massive database and careful records to ensure no cross breeding takes place. Additionally, each year 30 of the cows are selected for artificial insemination using prime semen from carefully selected bulls from places like Sweden and Canada, to introduce new bloodlines into the herd. Claire said: “My father in law travels all over the world looking

hatever Subaru’s flagship model wants to do, it does in a hurry. The rally refugee WRX STi delivers sensational performance figures that knock the socks off most of the opposition. And typically, is still available until the end of June with what is deemed the fastest mobile wifi in the world. The mobile in-car system allows multiple devices to be connected to wifi on the move with 30GB download allowance and a large enough battery for 24 hours of streaming. That might please those whose entertainment lies in the pleasures of social media and all that modern platforms can offer wide-eyed screen addicts. But for ‘diehard with a vengeance’ Subaru fans, the WRX STi remains more importantly, pound for pound, the ultimate driving machine – and long may it reign. Subaru’s updates tend to be considered and moderate, and that is the case with the latest

Alan Candy’s

AltomobilES 2017 model. But where the Japanese gurus have made changes is where it counts. The STi’s new bodyshell is wider, lower and longer of wheelbase; the chassis has been retuned; steering is new; and the cabin has been smartened up. The result is notable improvements in ride and handling – not that the old model could be criticised that much. Visually the STi, of course, is a stunner – a no-holds-barred, in your face, old school racer. The massive bonnet air scoop and whale-tail rear spoiler tell the main story, backed up by two pairs of twin tailpipes, multi-spoke black alloys with STi

Subaru WRX STi badging in the centre, colourcoded door mirrors and STi side logos. Even my neighbour who owns a Lexus and a Porsche Boxster looked on enviously when he laid eyes on the STi and he wore a wistful and rather regretful look all week. The STi’s interior is also racy

but a tad more tasteful. A classic all black cabin is offset by red piping on the sports seats, with contrasting matt brightwork; there’s also a D-cut leather wrapped steering wheel, while that STi logo is generously sprinkled around. Soft-touch surfaces abound and brutally heavy doors indicate the build quality depth. Performance is everything you might hope for – and more. That flat four 2.5-litre petrol engine will shoot you to 62mph in a 5.2 second whoosh and that raucous, restless, surging engine is a constant reminder of the power that lurks beneath that smooth snout. The STi settles down out of town and cruises beautifully and there doesn’t need to be too much gearchanging to pull out performance, thanks to plenty of low-down grunt. A six-speed manual gearbox is positive but needs a firm hand to show it who’s boss. Steering feels heavy at low speed but is wonderfully engaging and the long sports saloon storms through bends Continued on page 66

Nine years ago two friends pooled their cash and expertise to launch an independent Volkswagon, Audi, Seat and Skoda service centre. Business has boomed and VASS-TECH have now opened a fabulous new purpose-built service facility in the pretty village of Whitchurch...

A

VASS-TECH

few years ago you might have driven past VASS-TECH’s modest premises, without a second glance. Tucked away behind the Gulf petrol station on Whitchurch High Street, not far from Aylesbury, the 1940s timber-framed coach service shed had been vacant for a couple of years, when VASS-TECH founders Rob Mullan and Russ Stevens, spotted its potential as a location for their new venture. That was in 2008. The lads, both experienced mechanics, agreed a lease and set about tidying up and equipping the workshop, ready to launch their first business together, as independent Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda (VASS) car service and repair specialists. With just a few thousand pounds between them and no customers, the plan was to start the business in their spare time. They did a local leafleting campaign and Russ booked some holiday to get things up and running. His employers got wind of the venture though and he ended up quitting and going for it full-time. “Rob was going to stay in his job for a month or so too,” says Russ. “But after a week we were so busy I needed his help and he left to be here full-time as well!” Nine years on and VASS-TECH is not only a thriving business but Rob and Russ have done well enough to buy their workshop site and redevelop it with a stylish, new, purpose-built service centre, surrounded by a smart and secure fenced yard with extensive concrete hardstanding, plus additional buildings to one side to house the valet and tyre-fitting bays. There’s a neat, well-equipped reception area, kitchen and toilets, plus extensive workshop area with three high-lift ramps and an MoT testing bay, sharp, light-grey, painted flooring and rows of black Snap-On tool chests plus mezzanine storage and staff area. All very impressive for an independent facility.

Neil Birkitt visited the brand-new premises of VAss-tECH in Whitchurch near Aylesbury and was instantly impressed… hardstanding all around, while t’s not often that we feature additional buildings on one side house trade profiles in the pages of the clean room and tyre-fitting bay. be sees from several miles away and is second only in height and visibility to the village church! Both Rob and Russ are friendly, likeable and approachable guys, with many years experience in the motor trade, having worked their way up from apprentices through a succession of official Volkswagen and Audi retailer workshops to now running their own service and repair business. Rob, who lives locally in Calvert Green, started his career with an apprenticeship at Misbourne Motors in Chalfont St. Giles when he left school in 1992 and then worked at

directly to myself or Rob, so nothing is lost in translation and we know what we are looking for. It also means we can keep our costs and charges down. “With the space and headroom we now have we can do Class 4 MoTs and the ramps are big enough to take a long wheelbase VW Transporter. It’s very varied, one day I might be working on a 1971 Beetle and the next on an Audi R8. You never know what’s coming in!” An interesting testament to their excellent customer service is that VASS-TECH’s very first client - Steve Lloyd, who took his

The new workshop Windrush VW in Maidenhead until 2002, at Amersham Audi until 2004 and at Oxford Audi until 2008. Russ, who now lives in Wing, grew up in Middlesex and got his first taste of the motor trade doing work experience at Contim VW in Hayes. He worked for Monaco Motors from 1996 to 1998, before moving to West London Audi and then worked at Amersham Audi, Milton Keynes Audi and at Oxford Audi until leaving to start up VASS-TECH. “I met Rob at Amersham Audi in 2004,” says Russ, “and we’ve always got on really well. We are both hard workers and used to clock up the hours and bonuses in our previous jobs but now it’s really exciting to be working for ourselves. We are offering our customers a high level of service but in a friendly, honest, personal way. If something is wrong with a customer’s car we are happy to show them just what the problem is and to explain and discuss what needs doing and the costs involved. “Having a small team is good for communication as the customer can generally explain any problem with their vehicle

Alhambra there in August 2008 for a routine service - has become one of their numerous repeat customers and was appropriately the first customer to be booked into their brand new service centre - a double first for Steve! As business has built Rob and Russ have taken on a couple of extra hands: “There’s Nick, who is a qualified technician and has been with us for four years now,” says Russ, “and we have a second year apprentice, Charlie. Our wives Emma and Sam also help out on reception and with admin.” The bulk of their work is servicing and repairs, diagnostic troubleshooting and MoT test remedial work, but they’ve dealt with many more challenging projects such as an RS 6 engine out and a Touareg V10 rebuild. They’re not so much into the performance tuning and modification side of things, preferring to leave the re-mapping and satnav upgrades to specialists but they’ll happily fit cruise control, parking sensors, sports exhausts, brake upgrades or a suspension kit, when required. “If we think a customer is better off going

to a specialist for certain jobs or makes of car, we’ll say so,” says Russ. “We don’t try and do everything, but we aim to provide an excellent, honest service at great value rates for what we do offer.” It certainly seems to be working as the company has quite a customer base some of whom travel a fair way to use their services. “I think it has surprised both of us how quickly business has grown,” says Russ. “We have some 2,400 customers now. Many are local but some from further afield, places such as: Wendover, Amersham and Prestwood.” For short duration work, customers can wait in the comfortable modern reception area, or take a stroll around the pretty village. VASSTECH also has a couple of courtesy cars, a Passat and a Bora, which can be made available if required, during longer jobs. Despite their years in the business you can tell Russ and Rob have lost none of their enthusiasm for cars and engines. A giveaway is the fully race-prepared Mk 2 GTI in the yard with ‘Russ Stevens’ on the side windows, built for the Mk 2 Golf GTI Championship, and the lads also have another Mk 2 bodyshell in preparation, ready for when they get some spare time out from the business to go racing again. Vive la différence Citroen C3

Citroen C3 might not be the car you’d turn to, to travel back and forth from your ‘other’ house in France on a regular basis, but we have friends who did just that – on a regular basis. A competent little car in the past, the main bugbear being that while you could load it to the gunwhales, they were pretty compact and bijou gunwhales. How they would have loved the new middle age spread and slightly porkier C3 you can exchange your cash for now. Much more interior space, a build quality that hints that someone’s been down on the production line and kicked a few derrieres, and an overwhelming senses that here is - at last - a worthy wearer of that iconic Citroen badge. A badge that is simplicity itself on a car that has all the modern day bells and whistles that buyers demand. It bears the distinctive look of a shrunken C4 Cactus, because along its flanks are the airbump panels first seen on the aforementioned Cactus. It gives the C3 a certain ‘je ne said quoi’. Actually, I do know quoi, because it’s a body shape that flows, in sharp contrast to some of the edgier offerings at this point of

Rob Auchterlonie

ON The Road the market. It’s got an aggressive stance - a trait the French normally reserve for the rugby pitch - yet inside it comes over

Citroen C3

Citroen C3 all Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen, with tan strips round the steering wheel, the front edges of the seats and across the dash. Totally out of keeping with the cobalt blue

exterior paint and its white roof. The power here is provided by a three pot 1.2 litre engine with adequate output and performance attributes. The C3’s turbocharged and intercooled unit which proves

Citroen C3

quite voluble under acceleration and also quite swift, you have to work a bit on the correlation between clutch, throttle and gearchange to keep it smooth. Otherwise it isn’t, as the three pot can prove to be, a bit too willing to impress at times. The engine range offers you a simple choice - a 1.2 PureTech three-cylinder with either 68hp, 82hp or 110hp, while the 1.6 BlueHDi diesel comes in 75hp or 100hp guises. Citroen has successfully built the C3 round one of its core brand values, and that is comfort, making the car a relaxed place to be on the move, even if it does body roll a bit. Even with that, it’s still worth considering by anyone who’s looking for a car of this size. The C3 has been a staple of the supermini scene since 2002, but the latest C3 is definitely the best one yet. It’s light years away from its predecessors, sitting on its 17 inch diamond cut cross alloys as this one does. The original C3
