s the nights are drawing in and the weather is starting to feel slightly autumnal it seems that Summer may well be over. I know I always tend to remember the good bits and rarely recall those grey and drizzly days but it seems to me that it was quite a pleasant Summer for a change. Having said that, Mrs T insisted on buying a new barbecue, one particularly fine and sunny afternoon a few months back, despite my protestations that we would probably only use it once and what was wrong with cooking things

in our clean and efficient oven, rather than sweating and smoking over an open fire? Of course we did only use it once, not necessarily because the weather wasn’t good enough but because of course when it was we were busy doing other things or just found it easier to cook and eat inside, which makes our one barbecue meal one of the most expensive all year, if you take into account the cost of the equipment! ‘There he is,’ I hear you say, ‘the man who knows the cost of everything but the value of nothing!’

At least we’ll still have the barbecue for a meal next year and if I can squeeze it into the garage it shouldn’t be too rusty by then. Talking of eating, one item that’s worth every penny, whether you grill them inside or out are the rather delicious Aylesbury Royale sausages sold by Beef Olice butchers at Parton Road, Aylesbury. Autumn in the air
T
here is now a certain chill in the air, the leaves beginning to turn, talk of an Indian summer and soon enough we will all be looking to the new season which can present its own challenges when thinking of what to wear. In the UK what to wear seems to be interchangeable with “what is the weather going to be like” and the need to be prepared for any eventuality. Staples for the Autumn/Winter season therefore ideally include a great raincoat, scarves in colour, shoes that you can walk in and something of course to
Neutral Mohair bow sweater Luisa Cerano Gallivant, Thame, £389 soft white, bottle green and navy. Look out too this season for unusual detailing including ruffles, ties, button backs and texture to add something different to your look and your wardrobe. The cooler climate means accessories are easier than ever – scarves and hats are the perfect opportunity to inject colour to bring a well-worn favourite right up to date.

Knitwear It has to be colour. Fabrics are gorgeous – from a fine merino to soft lambswool, woollens are ubiquitous in Autumn, but look for colour and unusual designs to set your look apart. Claret red, soft mustard, cobalt or sea green are surprisingly versatile. Rather than making your knitwear your neutral, including pieces in bold colours is a great way to update your wardrobe and keep things bright rather than dissolving into a sea of navy and grey (gents too, take note!). Consider layering with complementary neutrals of charcoal,
Red It Whichever way you look at it, the season’s hottest shade is red. Everything from the brightest pillarbox to deepest cranberry. Red is the perfect colour to update your wardrobe this season as it keeps things bright and way more interesting. There is a lot more colour around this season, where typically Autumn Winter takes a turn for the more neutral shades – so make the most of it! More red will appear in store as the season progresses – and if you’re not sure of your perfect shade try a few before making your choice. A mid-tone red (right in the middle of where purple meets orange) is a flattering shade for all. And if red just overall feels just too bold for you, think of adding a hint with a trim, small accessory or even simply a garment lining.

Take a bow Bows have been back on the scene recently, harking back to a more romantic era and giving fashion a more feminine feel. Self-tie bows on waistlines, cuffs plus shoes, to the more obvious as embellishment on sweatshirts, cardigans and motifs. There are of course individual hair accessories and pins which are perfect for dramatic or creative looks. On the flip side Whilst bows are feminine, genderless is a dominant theme this season which is set to continue with garments and trends that work

here’s a real friendly community at the heart of Parton Road. Everyone seems to know each other and some of the traders are even related! It’s not just for locals though - with lots of free parking on hand Parton Road is an easy place to drive to and pick up those everyday essentials and a lot more too. Parton Road was built in the early 1960s. Before then it was fields which may have been owned by the people who lived in Broughton House - the large 19th century house at the corner of Tring Road and Parton Road. In Victorian times this was James Trevor Senior, a local landowner and magistrate. The house was later converted into a doctor’s surgery and is now a children’s nursery. By 1965 Parton Road had been developed and a

The look of love A “lover’s eye” miniature is a painting of the giver’s eye and from 1790 to 1820 was a love token. The idea was that the eye would be recognised only by the recipient and could therefore be worn publicly keeping the lover’s identity secret. However, portraits from the period rarely show the sitter wearing or holding an eye miniature so it is likely that the wearers concealed these intimate portraits from view. Women received miniatures set in brooches, rings, pendants and lockets. Men received cuff links, tie pins and snuff boxes. A border of burnished or engraved gold, gems or pearls usually surround the portrait and often there was a hair compartment on the reverse for the dear one’s hair. Eye portraits were always in miniature, ranging in size from a few millimeters to a centimeter or two. In the early 19thC Eye miniatures also became a form

of memorial jewellery sometimes called ‘tear jewellery.’ The purpose of the eye portrait changed from secret love to remembrance. Decorated with a tear or depicted as gazing through clouds, the miniatures evoked powerful sentiment. The gemstones which surrounded the portraits had different meanings, pearls represented tears, diamonds strength and longevity, garnets true friendship and coral protected the wearer from harm. Turquoise has an association with ocular health and was an interesting choice both as a surround for an eye miniature and a talisman for the wearer.
One theory about the origin of the eye miniature comes from the flamboyant Prince of Wales who was refused permission to marry Mrs Fitzherbert by his father George III. Mrs Fitzherbert went to Europe, so to bolster his proposal and keep his romance a secret, he presented her with an eye miniature, painted by Cosway. Apparently the gift of his gaze did the trick and they were secretly (but illegally) married. Cosway, in turn, painted the bride’s eye in order that she might covertly present it to the Prince. A pain in the back?
L
ower back pain (LBP) is an extremely common problem which can affect up to one-third of the UK adult population each year. It can be characterised by sudden attacks; when the pain has the potential to stop people in their tracks, followed by a period of recovery back to normal activities. In most cases, LBP is usually self-limiting, meaning that it can improve on its own within 4-8 weeks. However, the likelihood of LBP recurring in those with a previous history can be as high as 85%. Although the cause of LBP can be multi-factorial and unique in each individual case it is common for LBP to reduce the fitness of the important muscles that stabilise your spine. LBP can also lead to delays in your brain’s ability to successfully co-ordinate the muscles responsible for keeping your spine strong. This
has the potential to result in a vicious cycle of LBP, recovery and LBP where people can find that the most mundane activities aggravate their backs. If you are experiencing lower back pain you may find these suggestions help reduce your symptoms and quicken your recovery: • Stay active - although it can be hard at times it is important to avoid long periods of inactivity as this is likely to make the pain worse. Move a little and often • Use a hot or cold pack for 10
minutes at a time throughout the day for short term relief • Speak to your GP or Pharmacist to discuss how medication could help improve your symptoms and enable you to keep active At Breaking Barriers, we are passionate about maximising people’s physical potential and enabling them to lead more active and fulfilling lives. We do this by offering physiotherapy, specialist personal training and sports massage to bring about short-term improvements and longer lasting change. We can help address the difficulties from LBP though helping you to stay active, as well as through providing management of LBP with timely assessment and interventions e.g. rehabilitation exercises or sports massage to help reduce pain and increase movement and flexibility.

Best foot forward D espite the daily demands your feet endure could you honestly say that the time and attention you devote to their care reflects the number of hours during which they are in use? You see, standing in running water during a morning shower, or the occasional inspection when clipping toe nails, simply isn’t enough as Foot Health Practitioner Antonia Barnes, explains. “Our feet are the last thing on our list during our bedtime routine. Also, they are probably covered for more than half the year but every day feet should be washed with warm soapy water and given a good scrub with a flannel or loofah then dried thoroughly especially between the toes.” Common problems such as hard skin or corns can be painful if left unchecked. Trainers are supportive but they get warm and sweaty so best not worn all the time. Leather, moulded shoes are better. Ballet pumps offer little support; shoes with straps are preferable and the main thing is to wear different shoes throughout the week.” For those with a sedentary job or lifestyle, walking around every so often keeps the blood flowing while Pilates stretches feet and toes. Not always so glamourous
I
remember walking the halls of Princes Risborough School, nervously straightening my prefect badge and taking a deep breath before stepping into the science lab. Open evenings were always so exciting, yet nerve wracking at the same time, as so many things could go wrong whilst demonstrating live science experiments before an audience of inquisitive parents and potential new students! But my love for involving and engaging others in learning made my nerves worth it. Never in a million years did I imagine that I would develop from a shy tomboy into a confident and enthusiastic woman one day, happy to be in the public eye. Having been in dozens of TV shows across the UK, Sweden and USA and just finished shooting my second movie, I’m now preparing to host the prestigious UK Glamour Awards in London and it oddly brings back memories of school.
Tracy hosting the UK Glamour Awards Anybody who remembers me from my student days will think of Tracy the bookworm and teachers pet; I always handed in my homework ahead of time, helped others whenever possible and went the extra mile, which I’ve proudly instilled into my two young children. I’m incredibly grateful for my love of achievement and
success, which developed at a young age, because it’s undoubtedly led to the lifestyle that I enjoy today. Regardless of how many stages I step on, how many cameras I address and how many people are watching, I always feel those familiar butterflies in my stomach as I did in the science lab all those years ago. You can take the girl out of the county but you can’t take the county out of the girl! I’ve learnt that it’s never too late to make a change, knuckle down and try something new. My life has become the polar opposite of my childhood and with time, dedication, perseverance and an endless willingness to learn I know that I can take it even further and help even more people. We are incredibly fortunate to have the capacity to improve our lives, learn new skill sets and grow through experience and it’s an opportunity that should never be wasted. homley is a place where disabled people of any age, their families, friends and carers find support, encouragement and the opportunity to participate in a range of indoor and outdoor play, leisure and creative activities. Thomley is situated on farmland on the Oxon/Bucks border, just outside the village of Worminghall. The idea of a safe space where people with additional needs could play was first conceived by a small group of families who had children with Autism. They and their children didn’t feel understood, accepted or comfortable in ‘normal’ play settings, so they decided to set up their own safe area for children with additional needs. An 8 acre farmland site was secured at very reasonable rent from local farmers, the perimeter was made secure and indoor and outdoor play facilities installed.

Support for youngsters
A
s a dad, spending time with my children is a privilege and a pleasure, even just chatting and hearing about their plans. But it’s certainly not easy being young. There’s pressure on them to succeed at school, to find a job, afford somewhere to live, not to mention the pressures that come with those ‘perfect’ lives they see in their social media. I heard some shocking stats recently. Nationally, 50% of all homelessness applications made last year came from 16-24 year olds and one in 10 school pupils has a mental health diagnosis. Bucks, despite being a wealthy county, is no different. Local charity Youth Concern support vulnerable and disadvantaged young people aged 13-25 across Aylesbury Vale. They run a drop-in centre providing an informal, welcoming and nonjudgemental environment for young people. Here, they offer a range

Good to give Staff and yougsters at Youth Concern of services including counselling, support for substance misuse, advice on housing or the criminal justice system. Alongside these sits a fully equipped IT suite, pool-table, tabletennis and a much-used music studio where the young people can play, sing or produce their own music. Chief executive, Fran BorgWheeler, describes it as a safe place for young people. “We’re here to help people achieve what they want, and when the going gets tough we’re here for them to talk to. Bucks is seen as an affluent county but you don’t have to look far to see vulnerable people who need help.
Some young people have many difficult issues to deal with and need a lot of support from us before they feel self-worth and believe that they too can have a good quality life.” Having spent time with many homeless people over the years through work or volunteering, I know that homelessness can affect anyone regardless of class, education or background. Those affected are just like you or me, or our children. For Fran, this is a real local priority: “Homelessness is on the increase. We run Nightstop which provides emergency accommodation for a few nights.
We are now looking at ways we can have more impact with longer-term solutions. We need to support these young people now, so they can build stable futures” Sadly, Youth Concern is a vital part of our community but it will continue having a positive impact amongst those who need it for many years to come. Can you help Youth Concern transform vulnerable young lives through volunteering, expertise, donations or sponsorship? Fiction Book of the Month: Birdcage Walk, Helen Dunmore Set against a background of the French Revolution, Birdcage Walk juxtaposes questions of idealism versus disillusionment, and makes them play out on both a public and private stage. The revolution which is supposed to herald liberty, fraternity and universal suffrage descends into political rivalry, mass violence and unending bloodshed; while the idealising union of marriage also reveals its increasingly dark and menacing side. This is Dunmore’s last work, a stunning novel that balances the private sphere with the historical context. I notice and I reward...
L
ife can be so busy and the ‘hurly burly’ is never more intense than at the beginning of the school year. Your child will be facing new teachers, new friends, different classrooms, maybe even a different school. Their internal world will be full of excitements, fears and dilemmas; yet at the heart of that you still have a central role in noticing their achievements and rewarding them. And its achievement rather than attainment I urge you to focus on. Schools are under intense pressure for attainment and how many of their pupils or students reach arbitrarily defined levels. As a parent your focus can be different, its achievement we seek. In other words, your child getting better at what they do – even if it’s a small step. The great thing about achievement is that we can all do it and it relates to who we are as an individual. Take care of the
achievement and the attainment will come. Here are two things you can do: I notice - Take a moment to create, and mount, a board at home. It can be on a wall, a fridge; anywhere public in the home, and let each board be named with each child. On the board begin to mount achievements. These can be pieces of writing, photographs of a football game, evidence of kindness to a friend or family member, a leaf picked up on a long walk. Anything that acknowledges your child and who they are. You are affirming them – and you are making it public. As the school year develops the
board may become more closely linked to school achievements; that’s up you, but please don’t make it exclusively so. You are showing your child how much you notice who they really are – and how much you appreciate them. Don’t worry about the effect – just enjoy the process with them. They will learn about you too, and you will probably surprise them with what you have noticed. I reward - A glass jar and some pebbles is ideal. Looking at the board, once it is established, agree with your child what they would most like to improve on. Guide them, but let them choose. Once you have a thread going, agree that each step of improvement will add a pebble in the jar. Once you have reached the agreed target the reward is given and the jar is emptied and you start again. The rule is that the reward involves your one-to-one time. It can be baking together, playing
Education Matters sport together – it doesn’t matter – but it must be one-to-one and they must have you exclusively for that hour or that afternoon or that morning. These two ideas may seem simple, but they take thought and commitment and you will be surprised at the positive effects. Please let us know at Vale Life how you get on (some pictures of the boards would be great!) and enjoy the start of another year in those ‘factories of fun and learning’ called schools! l Nick Andrews is a retired Headteacher and a Trustee of Open English - local organisation that provides supplementary teaching in English to those that need it most. BBF’s close cyber shave

e recently had a near miss with a cyber fraudster, and it was clear from our experience just how easily any company could fall victim to scam artists. Luckily, we were able to identify the threat in the nick of time and can tell the following tale as a cautionary one, instead of with regret. It started innocuously when an email was sent to our accounts team appearing to come from our Managing Director asking them to make an urgent payment of nearly £10,000. The email was addressed personally to our Accounts Administrator and copied to her line manager – information that was easily obtainable via our website. An urgent payment request is not such an uncommon occurrence that it would immediately set alarm
bells ringing and our accounts team set about dealing with the request in the usual way. Due to the safeguards already in place with regards to signing off payments, no money could be transferred without senior management approval, but it was only at the final approval stage that it became clear the request was a fake and had come from an equally fake email address. A few deep breaths later and it was clear how close we had come
to transferring a large sum of money to an unknown party. The nationwide cost of fraud to businesses is estimated to be anywhere up to £144 billion a year and, according to the government, 33% of small businesses and 65% of large businesses reported a cyber breach or attack in the past 12 months. Meanwhile, a British Chamber of Commerce survey found that 21% of businesses “believe the threat of cyber-crime is preventing their company from growing”. So what can be done? Organisations should ensure their staff possess, at the very least, knowledge of typical signs of a scam like the email address of the sender being incorrect or an unfamiliar email signature for the supposedly known sender. The government advises businesses to complete its accreditation system, Cyber

A qualified Google Partner, Website DNA was congratulated by Google for enjoying a successful 2016 and “for being one of Google 2016’s top-performing agencies.” The firm was selected for the Google Elevator programme based on its size, growth trajectory and ability to deliver highly successful services to its clients. “We were proud to be invited onto the programme,” says Website DNA director Greg Smith, “as it recognises the leading digital marketing companies in the UK. It’s a great opportunity and we are very grateful to Google for selecting us. “We are being rewarded for delivering a high level of service and value to our existing clients and the Google Elevator Program will enable us to gain additional expertise and provide the very latest digital marketing services and techniques to both our existing and new clients.” Website DNA is currently a three man operation, run by Greg with the assistance of Dan Reilly and Ben Murphy. The business was founded in 2007 and has shifted focus over the years from website design to digital marketing: “We found a lot of companies have a website but are not satisfied with how it is performing,” says Greg. “They need a bespoke digital marketing strategy rather than a new website though. The name Website DNA sums up our approach. We recognise each company has a unique structure and requirements and a unique ‘website DNA’ and
From left: Greg, Dan and Ben tailor our services appropriately.” Trained in Google Adwords and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and with a background in website design, financial research, tech start-ups and business analytics, Greg is able to evaluate a client’s website and apply digital marketing techniques to improve its effectiveness in attracting new business. A quick perusal of Website DNA’s website and the numerous glowing customer testimonials, soon gives a feel for what the company is all about: “We help firms to attract more customers and grow their businesses,” says Greg. “Our expertise is in maximising the effectiveness of our clients online presence. We do this through SEO increasing visitors to our client’s website by improving their position in the major search engine rankings, and with the use of Google Adwords to generate enquiries, increase online transactions through a client’s website, and increase visitors from their specified target market. “We can analyse the current effectiveness of a customer’s website and identify how it can be improved to gain more visitors, generate more enquiries and drive more sales and to measure and then quantify results using tools such as Google Analytics. “We can also help and advise on Social
Media Marketing - connecting with your targeted market on the internet through social networks such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and more, which creates brand loyalty and product awareness and increases sales and profitability.” Companies who already have a Google Adwords account may be interested to know that Website DNA offer a free Google review of their account and that all new Google Adwords accounts set up through Website DNA come with a free £120 Google Adword voucher towards ‘click through costs’. They also offer a free Google Analytics review of your website’s performance. t Helen Pettifer Training, the definition of Customer Service is – ‘The experience provided to the customer before, during and after the transaction.’ Many businesses understand the experience they deliver must be greater than the customer’s expectations, but all too often this principle can be forgotten or even ignored, leaving the customer feeling dissatisfied and unvalued. In today’s business markets, outstanding Customer Service is key to company success, setting companies apart from their competitors. Customer Service expert Helen Pettifer set up Helen Pettifer Training in 2016 with the aim of raising awareness and standards in Customer Service practices: “As a consultant, I work alongside businesses, delivering three core elements,” says Helen, “which help them to deliver a first-class service to both employees and customers. Tips: combine fixed showerheads with a separate handshower, either on a bracket for rinsing and cleaning, or if you don’t wash your hair daily, on a riser rail for showering without the overhead deluge. Make sure the right shower waste is used to cope with the deluge of water from large shower heads. Also, position the thermostatic shower controls at the shower entrance not beneath the shower head, or you’ll be dodging a blast of cold water every time you turn it on.

Wallmounted options are easier for cleaning, look sleek and make smaller bathrooms feel bigger, or floor mounted furniture can feel more homely; my favourite is Origin by Finwood Designs - see image right. Try Duravit, Porcelanosa and Keuco for modular options. So you’ve got a sense of the look, what next? Key build considerations are; Water pressure - this will determine which taps and showers will work, or not. As a simple guide there are three main water systems; 1. Gravity-Fed = 0.1 bar pressure approx. 2. Combi-Boiler = 1.5 bar approx. 3. Unvented (eg: Megaflo) = 3 bar approx. Most, European brands like Dornbracht, Hansgrohe and Keuco require high pressure (HP) as do most large rainheads. If you have a low pressure system (LP) look at Samuel Heath (British
Origin by Finwood Designs made in Birmingham), Bristan and Hansgrohe who have a range for 0.2bar. Alternatively, upgrading your water system isn’t cheap but may be the best solution for the long-term, so it’s worth discussing all options with your installer as part of initial
planning. A pump can be added to a gravity system for example, though it’s not possible to add a pump to a combi system. Waste outlets - their location and direction of joists will determine the location of the wc and if wetrooms
can be level or need to be stepped up on a platform. An installation survey will confirm this. Spend - expect to spend around £8,000+ on products for a wetroom, more for a full home spa with sauna.

t the end of August 2017 the price of one bitcoin topped $5,000 - more than three times the price of an ounce of gold, having started the year at $997. So what is Bitcoin and why is it worth so much. Bitcoin is a decentralised (peerto-peer) digital form of currency that uses cryptography to send and receive payments. This means that unlike traditional currencies which are issued and controlled by a country’s central bank (or European Central Bank for the Euro), it has no central authority. It was first proposed in a paper in 2008, by Satoshi Nakamoto, an online pseudonym, and officially launched in 2009. Before bitcoin there were other digital currencies but they all suffered from the “double spending” problem. This significant issue was first solved by Bitcoin.
All transactions are recorded and validated in a public ledger known as the blockchain, by a distributed network of computers that anyone with the appropriate software can join. The blockchain and all the transactions it contains are public. To add transactions to the block chain, requires solving a difficult cryptographic mathematical problem, which also encodes all previous transactions in the blockchain.
Solving this problem is known as mining. The computer which solves is awarded a “reward” of a certain number of bitcoins. This is the only way that bitcoins can be created in the system. Once the transaction is validated and added to the blockchain, it cannot be cancelled. The algorithm behind Bitcoin is designed so that as the overall mining capability of the network increases the mining difficulty increases as well. The total number of bitcoins that can ever be mined is fixed at 21 million. As of 1st Sept, 16.5 million had been mined. It is estimated that all the possible Bitcoins will have been mined by 2140. So why is Bitcoin worth anything? That is a hard question to answer in a short article. The best answer I have found is the “network effect”, which is basically as more people use a thing, the more useful (and valuable) the thing becomes.

Column: Safe as houses with Nigel Grace
Find and improve! tel. 07712816 LEASE CHECK THIS PROOF CAREFULLY, Nigel Grace tel. 075000482 W ARTICULARLY PHONE NUMBERS AND Safe as houses web. www.chilternd hilst it may appear that the housing market is cooling (well we will see about that), for many obtaining the house of your ‘realistic’ dreams is just that – a dream. One solution is to buy an existing house and make it into one that suits you and your family. This approach needs enthusiasm, commitment and most of all vision! Once you have found a property that you think you could turn into your dream home what do you need to think about? Planning Permission: While exploring potential properties it is unlikely you will have the time, and probably don’t want to incur the cost of, applying for planning permission. However, many planning departments invite pre-application submissions which are a lot cheaper or they may have set times each week when you can telephone then and get informal advice from a planning officer. Whilst this may not be binding it will give you an idea of whether what you are planning
to do will be acceptable to them. Another good method is to look at other houses in the street – if some of them have loft conversions or side extensions like you are planning then there is a precedent and therefore it is likely that you will be able to do the same. Surveys: This is a critical stage and one where time, if you can afford it will pay dividends. Is the property listed and therefore protected or is it in a conservation area? Then you may be restricted in what you can do to it – but this is something that you can easily find out either from the local planning department or the agent that is selling the property. Visit the property more than once, take someone with you who is not emotionally involved, ask them to look for problems or potential issues that you may not spot. Budget: When assessing a property and the work you would like to potentially carry out it is important that you have an idea of what it will cost you. Speak to a builder or quantity surveyor and get
OUR EMAIL ADDRESS
an idea of budget for the work that you are hoping to do. Value: Whilst you shouldn’t always focus on the end value it is important that you don’t lose sight of it. TV property programmes often talk about finding the worst house in the best street, which is a cliché with a lot of truth in it. In most situations, you do not want to buy a property for say £300,000 spend £150,000 on it and then find out that when it is finished it is only worth £400,000. Ideally you want it to be worth £500,000. You should look to do works that add value and add saleability to your house. Financing: I am not a mortgage expert but it is worth mentioning that when considering a project, you need to think about how you are going to fund it. If it is with a mortgage or loan then talk to an expert before you progress too far – for example if it is a property that needs extensive structural work or refurbishment then some mortgage companies will not offer a loan against it.
Also, how will the mortgage company fund the work – in advance - or do you need to pay for the work and then effectively draw down the money from them? Timing is crucial and you need to be able to pay in good time for the work you want done. If it not right – walk away. It is very easy to get carried away with dreams of a certain house, but you need to think with your head and not your heart. If you don’t know the answer then ask the question, speak to experts, get advice and then if everything is possible then you may have found a house you can develop yourself into the house of your dreams. l Nigel Grace is an experienced chartered quantity surveyor. How to pick your tradesman Vale Life : Sept/Oct 2017

f you’ve not done it before, finding the right person to do some work on your property can seem a bit daunting. Hopefully this informative guide to finding local tradespeople you can trust, will give you a few pointers… Recommendations: It’s fairly obvious but by far the best way to choose a reliable plumber, electrician or builder is if you have heard good reports from friends or family. Ask neighbours, colleagues, friends or family for referrals. Or if you’ve noticed vehicles in your road/street belonging to tradesmen it may be worth noting down names and numbers for reference and you can ask your neighbour what their workmanship was like. It’s also worth asking industry contacts. For example, if you’re looking for a reliable plumber and you’ve had a good experience with another professional, such as a roofer or an electrician, try asking them for a recommendation. Approved trader schemes: A ‘Buy with Confidence’ (www. buywithconfidence.gov.uk) approved trader scheme runs in Buckinghamshire administered by Bucks County Council (www.buckscc. gov.uk). It is part of a national scheme being operated by several Trading Standards authorities throughout England. The scheme provides a list of local businesses that have been vetted and approved by Trading

Standards. Each approved member has been individually checked for trustworthiness and compliance with consumer protection laws. Buckinghamshire Trading Standards say: ‘Approved trader schemes, particularly ones with Trading Standards approval, are a great help in protecting people from rogue traders. We would urge anyone getting work done to get a range of quotes from tradespeople who are members of such schemes before making a decision who to use, and to never get work done from anyone who cold calls.’
sort of trader you want. The database is then searched within 50 miles of your postcode and comes up with a list of trader contacts in order of those closest to you. A TrustMark logo means you’re offered several guarantees including: • A firm’s technical skills have been independently checked through regular on-site inspections • Firms have signed up to a code of practice that includes insurance, good health and safety practices and customer care.
Check out other local resources: Try local newspapers, magazines (there’s a useful local business directory at www.vale-life. co.uk) and trade directories for sources of information on local tradespeople by way editorial features or advertisements. Many of the villages around the vale have their own websites (such as www.haddenham.net) with their own ‘trade directories’ listing local trades people. Don’t just book them though, ask for references first! TrustMark (www.trustmark.org.uk) is a not-for-profit government-backed scheme. It’s a national website but operates to assist customers on a local level. On the website, you simply put in your postcode and say what
National recommedation websites Online recommendation sites can be a bit hit or miss, but they can be a better option than just picking out a trader at random! There are a number of sites in the UK which work by providing space for customers to post jobs they need doing or traders to advertise their services. These sites work very much on a similar basis to word of mouth recommendations - in theory, traders are all judged and rated based on previous jobs. This can prove really useful in finding a good tradesman, and the more reviews on a site the better (a bit like how the rating systems on sites like eBay and Trip Advisor work). Continued on page 52

Continued from page 50 But remember that businesses pay to be listed on the trader sites - so they are essentially the ‘customer’ too. Rated People (www.ratedpeople. com) is one of the UK’s largest trade referral services. You simply post your location and a clear description of the job you want doing on the website, and up to three ‘recommended traders’ who subscribe to the service then contact you to quote on the work. You can read up about the traders online and plan based on what other customers have said about them. After the job is complete, you go back and rate the trader on the work they have done. Trustatrader.com (www. trustatrader.com) is another recommendation-based directory where consumers can do a postcode search to locate a list of traders in their local area - not just builders but also retailers, car sales and garage services. Before contacting traders on the list, consumers can access
feedback left by previous customers, plus look at pictures of previous work carried out. mybuilder.com is another site that seems to have lots of positive experiences from users. General industry contacts • Building: To find a builder contact the National Federation of Builders on 03450 578 160 www. builders.org.uk or the Federation of Master Builders on 0330 333 7777; www.fmb.org.uk • Electricity: NICEIC is the UK’s leading voluntary regulatory body for the electrical contracting industry, 0333 015 6625;
www.niceic.com • Gas: Gas Safe (0800 408 5500; www.gassaferegister.co.uk) Gas Safe is the official register for Gas Safety. The organisation hold the official list of gas engineers who are registered to work safely and legally on boilers, cookers, fires and all other gas appliances. • Plumbing: To find a plumber contact the Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering on 01708 472791 (www.ciphe.org.uk) Dealing with your tradesperson... Quite how much trouble you take here may depend on the size of
the job to be done but generally it’s best to: • Be specific and set out a detailed, clear brief when requesting quotes. Get more than one quote ideally, at least three. • Ask for a detailed, written quotation with start and finish times and agreed payment terms. • Ask for references, speak to previous customers and if possible visit previous jobs. • Only pay for work that has been done and not by advance payments. But where materials need to be bought in advance, it’s reasonable for the trader to ask you to pay a fair percentage of these costs as the job progresses. • Always use a written contract - it offers you protection if anything does go wrong. Agree any stage and final payments before work starts. l To find out how your home could be featured in a UK homes magazine visit Charlotte’s website: www.reallivingspaces.co.uk. Bring your holiday home! N
ow the children are back to school, the nights are starting to draw in and there’s a chill in the air each morning, it’s safe to say the summer is definitely drawing to a close. But if you have come home from a holiday abroad, you can maintain that holiday feeling a little longer by recreating some of the planting combinations you enjoyed while you were there. For example, the Spanish Tourist Office showcased the mystery and romance of Galicia ‘Pazo’ gardens at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this year. The Galician Pazos are magnificent palaces famous for their exquisite architecture and extensive gardens, where formal design meets the untamed nature of Galicia’s landscapes. Dripping with greenery, mists enshroud the gardens in the cooler

months (much like the morning mists of an English autumn), softening the edges of their formal design. Here show garden designer, Rose McMonigall, shares her tips on recreating the look in your own garden.
1. The key to this indulgently romantic look is to embrace nature in your garden. A few ‘weeds’ here and there will add to the theme, so let nature do its thing. If there’s a balance between plants that you have bought and those that have self-seeded and introduced
themselves, you are following the right path. 2. Go for green, in all its shades. A limited colour palette with varied green shades and a dash of cool blues will evoke the mysterious, shady gardens of the Pazos. Edges should be blurred, so avoid neat lines and be led by the shape of the plants. 3. To add instant impact, invest in specimen plants common to this beautiful part of Spain such as glossy-leaved camellias and delicate mophead blue hydrangeas, or climbing varieties. Both of these need acid soil, so if your soil is neutral or alkaline (you can check this with a pH tester kit bought at a garden centre), you’ll need to add ericaceous compost. Ferns and arum lilies will also complete the look. 4. Garden furniture, stone features or hard landscaping should look as faded and vintage

of trickling water will really heighten the romantic vibe. This might also be a chance to plan next year’s holiday! Galicia is renowned as a destination for lovers of the outdoors and garden enthusiasts. Tourists can follow a dedicated ‘Camellia Route’ – a journey that runs from northern to southern Galicia through 12 manor houses (or Pazos) and gardens where the camellia reigns in all its glory.
Glossy leaved Camellias as possible. A stone bench with lichen spots, rocks covered in cushion moss or even a classic statue tangled in ivy or vine will add to the atmosphere. 5. Encourage wildlife into your garden by creating a small log pile as a haven for insects and hedgehogs, and avoid sweeping up fallen leaves. If you want to really embrace the Galician look, build a small pond or water feature and add some marginal pond plants and water lilies. Local wildlife will love it and the sound

Preparing for Winter S ummer seems like a distant memory now that the temperature is dropping, the nights are drawing in and the rain is incessant - it’s time to start thinking about preparing your pets to cope with the changing seasons. Having had a particularly wet summer, Unique Pets already has a range of raincoats on sale. Whether you’re looking for something lightweight, reflective or lined for added warmth, we are sure to have something to suit your pooch. However many dogs simply refuse to go outside in the cold and wet weather, so you might need to consider other ways to keep them entertained. You can enrol in dog training classes to provide mental stimulation; whether that’s obedience, fungility or trick training, an hour’s class will exhaust them in the same way as a long walk. You could even try a fun swim at the Bucks Canine Hydrotherapy
Cat Radiator Hammock pool. Other ways to challenge your dog indoors include any number of treat-releasing brain games - either make your own, such as a snuffle mat, or visit your local pet store to discover other simple solutions you can do at home or buy an interactive game which come in a range of difficulty ratings. Of course, if your dog prefers to go out for an early-morning or late-evening walk, there are a few more things to think about than just a lead and poo bags.

It is important for you and your four-legged friend to always be seen, so you should wear light coloured clothing and reflective strips, particularly if you are walking along a busy road. Make sure you carry a torch, as dusk descends rapidly and, as well as keeping a phone to hand, you should let someone know where you’re going and what time you’ll return. You can choose from any number of options to help your dog be seen at night, from a high vis jacket to a reflective collar, harness and lead set. There are a whole range of light up collars and light attachments, which can be set to steady or flashing, so you can keep track of your dog even off lead. Pop into a local store to find the best solution for your pet. You can also choose from a wide selection of glow in the dark balls, launchers and frisbees so that you and your dog can still have fun even when the light fades.

s the nights start to draw in - so does the festival season. And what a season it has been! Live In The Park, Thame Town Music Festival, Towersey and Towersey Fringe - the list goes on. There are many perks to being a working musician/ music columnist and one of them is meeting new bands and discovering new music. Here are a couple I met this summer. I love my job! Papa Truck (FTMC and Music In The Park) Papa Truck are a 5 piece Bluegrass band from South Bucks and Berkshire who write their own Bluegrass music. It’s Bluegrass from the Chiltern Hills! Martin and Dan met in a previous band and after Dan, who usually plays the guitar, purchased his first banjo, they started to write in the Bluegrass style. Since 2006 they’ve been joined by: Ryan, Nia, and Charlie along with original bass player Sparkie Dalton. They have performed locally and nationally ever since, influenced by the movie ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’, and artists such as Lennon and McCartney, Buddy Holly and Neil Young. Their songs are arranged as a band so everyone’s input is heard in the overall sound. Papa Truck are about to record their fourth studio album and will

Happy New Year!
I
consider September to be the New Year when it comes to theatre, as everything gets going again after the Summer recess. And boy is it getting going again this year! To start with, a shout out to a local theatre group that is celebrating a massive achievement this year. Having formed back in 1967, the Winslow Players – an amateur dramatics group from Winslow – are now celebrating 50 years, a feat that renders me speechless. How incredible that for such a long period of time, there has been a dedicated team of people creating theatre in Winslow, purely for the joy that it gives them and their audiences. Their next show, in this anniversary season, is a production of Terry Pratchett’s Wyrd Sisters playing at the Winslow Public Hall from October 5th-7th. Follow them on Twitter @ winslowplayers. At the Court Theatre in Tring Berkhamsted Theatre Company present their production of All Shook Up (10th-14th October).
The story, set in 1955, follows a girl who falls in love with a motorbike-riding stud and plays out in similar fashion to Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, but set to the music of Elvis Presley…! My mum’s mum is an Elvis Presley fanatic so her interests and my love of theatre drew me to this show many years ago and it is a total guilty pleasure of mine – you won’t be disappointed. At Aylesbury Waterside this month, Jessie Wallace of EastEnders fame arrives with Deathrap by Ira Levin (19th-23rd September). The play - which holds the record for the longest running thriller in Broadway history, tells the story of a playwright who loses touch with their writing abilities and contemplates the many different ways he could get away with stealing a newcomers’ writing and passing it off as his own… It sounds thrilling and I for one cannot wait to see it. There’s so much theatre opening in London’s West End this month that I actually don’t know where
Shaun Nolan Showtime!
Hair opens at the vaults from Oct 11th to begin. Martin Freeman of Sherlock and The Hobbit fame joins Tamsin Grieg in a new play, Labour of Love, at the Noel Coward (15th Sept to 2nd Dec), a brilliant new political comedy; Young Frankenstein, the musical adaptation of the classic Mel Brooks film, lands at the Garrick and is amazing so I can’t wait (28th Sept onwards); Heisenberg, the new play by Simon Stephens starring Anne-Marie Duff and Kenneth Cranham which looks mind-blowingly good, starts at Wyndham’s (3rd Oct to 6th Jan); and the major new revival of Hair opens at The Vaults which is one
of my most anticipated theatre openings of the year (11th Oct onwards). If you can’t find anything that you fancy going to in the local area, then you’ll most certainly find something you want to see in London. What are you planning on watching this month at the theatre? Are you staging a show later in the year that you’d like mentioned in this column? onto the stage, bringing the essence of all that was cool in 1964. The show features the music of The Small Faces, and is written and directed by award-winning actress Carol Harrison, best-known as the exciting, fiery and passionate Louise Raymond in Eastenders. Carol says: “It’s a real honour to be able to bring the extraordinary world of the Small Faces back to the fans and to a brand new audience, young and old. Our live band and cast tell the story of the rise and fall of the band, a journey as vivid and colourful as their sound, and showcases an amazing catalogue of music - hard edged R’n’B. This is the music which influenced a generation of musicians from Paul Weller and The Jam to Oasis,
Blur, The Verve and The Arctic Monkeys, not to mention millions of fans. Book now – it’s truly a concert of a lifetime!” All or Nothing tells the electrifying yet bittersweet tale of Kenney Jones, Ian McLagan, Ronnie Lane and Steve Marriott; four charismatic young kids from East London with humour, attitude, passion and above all talent. They became the Small Faces and were rocketed into the big time, only to discover the path to fantastic success is paved with exploitation, betrayal and ultimately tragedy. The musical is packed full of all their timeless hits played live, including the brilliant Whatcha Gonna Do About It, Tin Soldier, Lazy Sunday, Here Comes the Nice, Itchycoo Park and of course All or Nothing. Live music continues at The Waterside with one of the biggest names in Irish music, Nathan Carter, alongside some must-see tribute acts and bands including Whitney – Queen of the Night, Johnny Cash Roadshow and for a totally amazing, note-perfect tribute The Illegal Eagles. The bags designed and created by this Kingsey leatherworker echo individual needs and tastes. From colour and texture to shape and stitching, every detail is customised, meaning you end up with a bespoke item. “I talk to customers about what they want and why they want it,” Elizabeth explains. “We look at styles, types of buckles, whether they like tapered sides. It’s about letting people know the process they’re buying into.” Quality cow hide is used for the end product. But first, after measurements and shape have been agreed, the 43 year old produces a paper pattern and a mock up in a cheap leather. process. Elizabeth talks us through the work that follows: “I spread out a hide (up to 60 square feet) on an extended table. For a messenger bag the pocket is the first thing to go on, then the clasp. Another layer
of leather may be added to the base for stiffness. Grooves are cut to get the folds right. I use clothes pegs to get it all lined up. Then I hammer a pricking iron to leave an imprint of where the stitches will go; 7 stitches per inch is standard.” Other tools she uses include scalpels, awls and bevellers for rounding off edges. Saddle stitching involves two needles used simultaneously with one hemp thread (or silk for finer goods) first rubbed with beeswax, a conditioner which aids the thread’s longevity. Royal School of Needlework trained, Elizabeth discovered leatherwork by accident. Having previously tried her hand at millinery and jewellery making, she spotted an advertisement for a belt making course. “I thought, yeah! You have to be accurate with leather. I like the challenge of the medium as well as the technical side.” Although belts and bags form the bulk of her orders, she also crafts

Chorizo crusted cod fillets with saffron potatoes and pepperade
T
his is a real dinner party dish. Take a simple fillet of cod, top it with a perfect chorizo crust and serve it with delicately flavoured saffron potatoes and a lovely sweet pepper and shallot ‘pepperade’. Created by Ivor Morgan, head chef at the SG4 Brasserie at the Needham House Hotel in Hitchin, this is a great example of how restaurant quality food can be recreated at home... Ingredients: Serves 4 4 x 180g cod fillets. The thicker the better. Crust 100g finely chopped chorizo 75g breadcrumbs 200g unsalted butter 30g chopped tarragon Zest of 1 lemon Pepperade 4 roasted red peppers 2 banana shallots (cut into long slices) 6 plum tomatoes (roughly chopped) 2 cloves chopped garlic Pinch of saffron Capers to finish
64
Vale Life : Sept/Oct 2017
Potatoes 3 peeled new potatoes per portion Good pinch of saffron Sprig of thyme Method: Firstly sweat the chorizo in a medium hot pan with a little oil and cook until the chorizo starts to release its own oils. Add the butter and breadcrumbs and continue to cook out until the butter has melted and is well mixed through. Place the mix onto some greaseproof paper then place another piece on top of that and
roll out to your required thickness (3mm or so). Pop it into the fridge and allow it to set before cutting to the size required (you will cut it to the exact size of each of the fish fillets you will be cooking). To make the pepperade, grill the red peppers until charred. Peel, deseed and finely slice. Sweat off the garlic in a good amount of olive oil then add the shallots and cook until cooked with very little colour. Add the peppers, saffron and a little sugar and salt to taste and cook until you see some juice being released. In go the chopped tomatoes and continue to cook until the sauce starts to naturally thicken. It is then ready and can be quickly reheated when ready to serve. Cook the potatoes in well salted water, adding in the saffron and thyme too. Once cooked, leave the potatoes to cool down in the water the potatoes were cooked in to allow the saffron to marinade into the potatoes. When ready to use, you’ll just need to simply reheat them gently. To cook the fish, place the fillets
In the kitchen Nick Coffer
into a hot frying pan with a little oil. Cook until the fish has got a nice caramelised bottom and you can see that the fish is 3⁄4 cooked. Now turn it over and place the pre-cut crust on top, then put the fish under the grill so you can toast the crust until a golden colour. The fish will continue to cook while under the grill. Once the fish is cooked, you are then ready to serve the dish. Put the fish on a dollop of pepperade and serve with the potatoes. Lovely! l Hear wonderful recipes on Nick Coffer’s Weekend Kitchen every Sunday morning on BBC Three Counties radio at 11am. Cavalry steal the show
R
eal combat soldiers were the stars of this year’s Bucks County Show, in a thrilling main ring event. The men, dressed in vintage uniform, rode stunning black horses in a fifteen minute performance set to music as part of the Household Cavalry Musical Ride, which is formed from the Life Guards and the Blues and Royals. The Household Cavalry has two roles, as a ceremonial regiment and as combat soldiers and the men have served in war zones including Afghanistan, Bosnia, Northern Ireland and the Falklands. Captain Jack Pile, the current officer in charge of the musical ride, told me: “We are all real soldiers, we may look like toy soldiers from a Victorian toy shop but we are all trained combat soldiers.” The Household Cavalry is the Queen’s official bodyguard and in days gone by, travelled the country protecting Queen Victoria as she travelled. After the Manchester bombings earlier this year they
The Household Cavalry Musical Ride at Bucks County Show were deployed onto the streets of London. Now they travel the country for a different reason, to perform at shows. The soldiers in the musical ride change regularly. The ones who performed at Bucks County Show were all aged from 18 to 28 and had learned to ride within the past 18 months, with at least half a dozen who hadn’t even sat on a horse a year ago. There is an 18 week riding course for anyone who joins the mounted regiment of the Household
Cavalry where they learn all the basics from the anatomy of a horse to cross country jumping, show jumping and riding in all the kit. After that they do ceremonial duties and can then apply to join the musical ride for a period of time, during which time they also serve on Horseguards Parade. The horses (aged from seven to 15 years and measuring 16.3 to 17.3 hands) and their riders, accompanied by a vet, farrier, saddler and members of The Corps of Army Music who rode grey horses, arrived at the showground the night before the show. The horses were kept in wooden stables especially constructed for their arrival, and the soldiers slept together in a large administration tent. They put on two performances, and although a short thunderstorm broke out between them, making the grass very slippery, the horses were fine because they have special studs inserted into their shoes to prevent them from slipping. Captain Pile said: “Fifteen

minutes is as much as we expect the horses to do in one show, they are in canter and doing it twice during the afternoon. We could stretch the show out if we took it at a trot, but it is more exiting to keep it moving.” The finale involved riders galloping around the ring to Land of Hope and Glory, carrying huge patriotic flags for England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Union flag. They were given a rousing reception from the visitors to the show and many people commented on how this was the best main ring event they had seen there for years. l Heather Jan Brunt is a journalist

Happy Pete-in-the-box
O
ne of my happiest memories of this time of year is being hidden in a large cardboard box for half an hour every evening. ‘Ah,’ I hear you say, ‘Peter is thinking back to his early childhood and a game that he used to play… how sweet! Or maybe he’s alluding to something I’m not sure I want to read about’. So, let me explain. The hiding under a box thing happened five years ago, on a stage in Edinburgh, at the festival fringe. I was appearing in my good friend Barry Fern’s Edinburgh fringe show about how he changed his name by deed poll to Lionel Richie. I played the part of Barry’s old school teacher, Mr Powell, who’d told young Barry he would amount to nothing. I was a relatively new stand-up at the time and was chuffed to be asked to be part of Barry’s show. Barry is a great stand-up and something of an Edinburgh fringe legend. He also runs the famous Angels Comedy Club in London’s Bill Murray pub.
It was a great show and the fun thing about the large cardboard box was that, as far as the audience were concerned - if they noticed it on the stage at all - it was simply something being used to stand props against, for example a giant copy of Barry/Lionel’s passport. The audience were truly surprised when – on a cue from Barry – ‘Mr Powell’ popped up out of the box, like a superannuated Andy Pandy. The show garnered several 4 star reviews. So why is my happiest memory of this time of year being underneath that cardboard box, in what has to be said were hot and humid evenings in that fetid semisubterranean Edinburgh comedy venue? Well, I can only say I felt ‘safe’ under my box as the show unfolded around me. There’s something quite crazy about the Edinburgh fringe - performers have been known to crack-up under the pressures of the febrile, excited, competitive and frenetic atmosphere. As a stand-up, when
you’re not performing, you’re desperately seeking shows to get some ‘Open’ spots on, meeting with other comics, doing some industry networking (if that’s your thing – it’s not mine), getting to see other must-see shows, forgetting to eat, forgetting to sleep and drinking too much beer (which is my thing). So, there I’d be each day under my box, far from the madding crowds, and a kind of blissful calm would descend on me, as around me I heard a talking moose’s head and, then, the dance troop ‘unexpectedly’ bursting through the theatre doors. Nothing to do but enjoy the show (subtly different every night with different audiences and ad libs from Barry). Then on hearing Barry’s reference to Stockholm Syndrome, I’d appear from the top of box. Cue: gasps and laughter (technically Barry’s laughs, not mine, I was simply acting his lines). There was a sense of being part of something special, of time-suspended, under that box. And yes, something playful and child-like, like being a little boy
Peter Purvis again playing an imaginary game. Freud said that a sign of good mental health is the ability to play. And that basically is what being a stand-up comedian is all about. Anyway, it keeps me sane... l Peter is from Aylesbury and performs as stand-up comedian Fred Ferenczi. He has been appearing at this year’s Edinburgh fringe as part of “Wrong Comedy” a compilation show at The Globe, Niddry Street.

ather like Manchester United boasting Lukaku as their new striker, Skoda now have a giant leading from the front in some style. That’s thinking big – and it doesn’t come much bigger than this. The giant Kodiaq, with massive road presence, is Skoda’s first seven-seat SUV , highlighting the brand’s ambitions as one of the most aspiring and creative in the industry. So far as size is concerned, Kodiaq is in Audi A7 territory here and the vehicle seems massive when you are face to face with it. Kodiaq wears the family livery

Alan Candy’s
AltomobilES well and bears that rather noble and sturdy look - this is no leaden lump, with rather sporty lines. Although it’s just 40mm longer than the stablemate Octavia, it offers a larger than average interior for the SUV segment. Kodiaq, aside from its extreme comfort and practicality, is also extremely versatile. The middle
Skoda Kodiaq SE L 1.4 TSI row of seats, for example, can be folded 60/40 and slid lengthways by 180mm as standard. And Kodiaq’s party piece is its ability to swallow up the rear two seats easily into the floor, to create a larger, flat load area. Unsurprisingly, with a volume of 720 to 2,065 litres (five-
seater with rear seats folded down) the Kodiaq takes the crown of largest boot in class. Kodiaq also has safety and technology firmly in mind and offers a vehicle simply brimming with clever ideas. Infotainment Online and Care Connect are Continued on page 72

Assist (find me the off switch, quick), Blind Spot Detect, Rear Traffic Alert, Driver Alert, Emergency Assist, Crew Protect Assist, Multi-Collision Brake and Travel Assist, with Traffic Sign Recognition (like most, it still misses some areas). Kodiaq launches in the UK with three petrol and a brace of diesel engines. I have been at the wheel of the awe-inspiring Skoda Kodiaq SE L 1.4 TSI 150PS 4x4 DSG version, costing a cool £30,560. Forward vision is excellent, thanks to a slimline dashboard and there is a general feeling of robustness, although curiously the rear doors clatter half shut rather lamely unless given a good shove. Good news is that the arsenal of technology is actually easily accessible and logical, with a useful clutch of driving modes from which to choose and an off-road button. Amazingly a humble 1.4 turbo petrol unit powers this
leviathan and never appears underpowered – it’s up to the job, delivers a 0-62mph time of around 10 seconds and achieves about 40mpg overall. Despite its size, this colossus boasts a surprisingly easy tight lock for manoeuvring and generally handles well, with impressive ride quality. Leading from the front, Kodiaq’s set to score highly. Factfile: Model tested: Skoda Kodiaq SE L 1.4 TSI 150PS 4x4 DSG. Price: £30,560 (prices from £22,190). Engine: 1.4TSI 150PS. Transmission: six-speed DSG 4x4. CO2 emissions: 163g/km. Performance: 0-62mph in 10.1 seconds, top speed 119mph. Seats: Seven. Dimensions (mm): length 4,697, width 1,882, height 1,676 (including roof rails), wheelbase 2,791.

It’s emotional Kia Picanto ‘2’ 1.0.
P
erennial city car favourite the Kia Picanto struts its stuff around town with smarter looks, more space and tougher build. This is the third generation of the car that first raised its flag on British beaches way back in 1991, with the introduction of the Kia Pride. A new brand was born and the Pride morphed into the Picanto – now still exactly the same length and width but attempting more ‘youthful and emotional design’ (Kia’s words). Interestingly it now only comes in three-door form - three-door models, once considered cool, now only account for around 10 per cent of the new car market. It’s strange how trends change so quickly. Kia are keen to push on with
Alan Candy’s
AltomobilES Picanto and build on the success of a winning number. After all, Picanto is already a regular top 10 seller in the UK and is expected to claim around 5.1 per cent of the million sales per year in this segment in Western Europe. Nine versions are available at launch, based on two engines, two
Kia Picanto ‘2’ 1.0. - infotainment transmissions and five trims. Picanto, on an all-new platform, is noticeably chunkier and more sporty looking than its predecessor (a bit more like a mini SUV) and Kia have done a decent job inside, too. The design was a joint effort by Kia’s studios in Germany and at Namyang in South Korea, where the car is sold under the ‘Morning’ name.

A lower waistline makes the cabin lighter and more airy, a slimmer dashboard results in clearer forward views and there is more all round space. Solid doors demonstrate its robust but lighter construction but there is some cost cutting on interior trim, with hard and unyielding plastics on dash and doors.

a clumsy scrolling procedure and connection points are situated well down at the foot of the dashboard – strange ergonomics and not
recommended to view on the move. However, I like the speedo, which sensibly flags up the 30mph mark in red.
The driving experience isn’t great, I’m afraid. A gruff, hesitant three-cylinder petrol engine is under-powered with embarrassing

Kia’s Picanto ‘2’ 1.0. performance figures and really needs to be kept on the boil to pull out the power. Things look up in mid-range once the Picanto gets into its stride and it handles quite tidily, with strong straight-ahead stability. The four-cylinder 1.25-litre engine may be worth a look at here. Brakes lacked finesse on the test car and the ride is fidgety but a smooth five-speed manual gearbox is a welcome companion. A big drawback is a lack of seat height adjustment. The boot is short but deep and lowering rear seats results in a two-tier load space. Kia claims a class-best 255 litres here. Grade ‘2’ models, like the one I tested, gain air con, electric rear windows and heated door mirrors, Bluetooth with music streaming and a leather-trimmed steering wheel. Compact and highly manoeuvrable, Picanto is a townie by nature and that is its natural habitat. Other rivals may be a better drive but there’s always the allure of that seven-year
