Nowadays, the issue of how to solve the

infrastructural nodes in the contemporary city is becoming more relevant and hard to ignore. In fact, if it is true that at the evolution of technology and at the introduction of new transport vehicles (such as electric trains, driverless cars etc.) correspond the change of the highways, then the urban device, intended as an intermodal hub, has to change to adapt itself to the new conditions, otherwise it becomes useless and obsolete. To explain as best as possible the trend of this evolution and the strict relationship between the elements of the highway, the mobility and the building, a complex timeline has been designed to collect all

the paradigms, with the aims to be a theoretical tool for the design of the future architectural interchange models. The timeline contains the mapping of a large group of case studies organized by different categories: from the beginning of the XX century to 2020, the chosen paradigms are divided in relevant publications, visionary projects, and realized projects. All these elements distributed along the course of the history are placed in a continuous and parallel dialogue with waves of innovation and social changes (like the construction of the first highway in the world or the first driverless car), showing the tangible interaction between them and a precise path of evolution.

and lies between Via Tiburtina and the Rome-Naples motorway; the territory has a pretty residential character, and it is largely made up of a sprawling fabric of illegal houses. Both the vastness of those settlements – mainly located between Via Casilina and Via Prenestina – and their temporal stratification show how this kind of urbanisation represents one of the most solid and compelling matrices of the Roman metropolis. The project focused on a 500x500 meters area in Valle Borghesiana, filling some unbuilt lots with thirty examples of 20th-century villas – a catalogue of

canonical modern buildings, from Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye to Robert Venturi’s Vanna House, from Peter Eisenman’s House XI to Rem Koolhaas’ Villa Dall’Ava. As opposed to the existing ones, the new villas are not only focused on the interior space of dwelling, but projected towards the city, showing how architecture is recyclable, collective and essentially urban device.

simple line - be it a sign on the ground or be it a real fence - since it has in itself the duality of being simultaneously encounter-clash and division. This thesis intends to investigate the complex nature of the border and the problematic relations within the neighboring territories. The starting point is the border between San Diego and Tijuana, the most emblematic case because of its double fence. Hence the discussion will extend to a much larger scale, to the relationship between the United States and Mexico. Analyzed the situation and its problems,

the aim of the study is not to propose solutions, but to raise issues and questions by designing a linear city. The border maintains its crossing-point nature, but it expands and becomes thick enough to contain a city, whose purpose is to keep the two cultures distinct, to educate about a different one and to re-educate passengers about their own culture. The city becomes a device of cultural transformation and it is organized in a sequence of fragments of Mexican and American cities, held together by the coercive action of two walls.

With two points of entry (San Ysidro and Otay Mesa), the line has the peculiarity of having, for about 20 km, a double security fence that creates a buffer zone between the two nations; it is continuous in the Mexican side, while in the American side, it stops, due to the mountainous terrain that serves as natural border. The city of Tijuana develops itself on the physical boundary, in a formless and chaotic way, while San Diego extends to the north and it approaches to the edge in a stretched way.

The various activities contained in the Strip are collected in functional districts, whose succession makes that anyone may come, follows a precise path: Entry, Residential District, University District, Buffer Zone, Monument District, Freetime District, Working District and Exit. In this way it is possible to implement the process of Americanization and Mexicanization.

The parallel development of the American and Mexican areas create a continuous dialogue both from the architectural point of view, both from the cultural point of view. So we have reached the goal we set at the beginning: make it possible for the instances of physical and symbolic to coexist that is the explanation of the paradox of architecture.

The walls have the function of containing and keeping together the different districts that follow from east to west. Their design is nothing more than the design of the infrastructure system that dictates the development of the city in east-west direction. In the walls are contained six levels of public transportation: the tram on the ground floor, the trains on the upper floors. To ensure that the walls will develop in height, each floor (13 m high) is equipped with 00

The points of access to the infrastructure are located in the Buffer Zone and are made from simple elevators flanked by ramps. Hovewer the driveways transport are moved completely to the level -1, through ramps at the entrance and the exit of Strip: they develop in four highways (two in coincidence of the walls and two in the middle line) that, in correspondence of the Buffer Zone, meet the parking and lift points. In this way, the entire surface of the city can be fully pedestrian.

host the functions required for the realization of a food point. Each of them is thought to be autonomous in structure and form as well as in function. In the meeting of four elements the compositional idea is created. The modules are held together by the union of the vertical structures. This union creates a cross, the hub of the settlement, which holds together and at the same time divides the elements in order to maintain their own autonomy. The regeneration of the space inside the quarry

is therefore entrusted to the positioning of the fourquarters base: their regularity generates spaces and scenarios each time different. Quattroquarti does not have vertical perimeter closures and allows the visitor a complete usability of space by placing it in continuous connection with the outside. The different openings allow the user of the quarry to reach visual goals that link him to the others.

mitation and contrast: these are the two purposes behind the project of “The M!ind’s box”, because the intervention in a city like Venice can not be reduced only to the imitation of its forma urbis and its historical architectural elements. The urban planning of the city of Venice is a traditional sequence of full (buildings) and empty (courtyards) spaces, in which the shapes and volumes of the Lagoon tradition (and more in general Italian tradition) are harmoniously repeated. Looking at this context, the project aims to propose again the traditional element, with one major difference: to overturn this logic. The empty becomes the container of all the functions and the full becomes just the connections. A light white theca made by polycarbonate occupies all the empty allotment, leaning just behind the existing border wall. Inside, a big black volume stands in the middle of the area, as a mysterious object that does not reveal its content. Between the container and the content, a continuous ramp runs all around

the box, serving all the rooms and becoming itself a continuous space for exhibitions. The dark monolith aims to become the new center for all Artisans: a space for confrontation, a catalyst of ideas for Venice and for all the world.

030 AD. In an unspecified city of the world, which for simplicity will be New York City, because the project aims to be an autonomous object that has general and universal value. The way of doing traditional sports is outdated and the space and the tools devoted to the physical activity change as well: they become passive transformation devices. A new motto takes place in the future: the sport is the experience of the viewer. You just need to sit, choose a sport, relax and enjoy the show. That is how elementary volumes, as mysterious objects, appear spread out within the city -in public spaces or in private houses- with the aim to be places in which stop and take a break from the hectic and chaotic everyday life. The existenz minimum of the indoor space (and consequently the minimal dimensions of the external shape), combined together with the Ganzfeld

Effect, creates a perfect environment for anyone who wants to use this room for training. At this point in the evolution, the development of technology allows the processing of video at a frequency so high that it can activate the neurons in the user’s brain and, consequently in their turn, stimulate the muscles. The only basic activity of watching yourself doing any kind of sports -that you can choose thanks to a panel control placed on the seat- starts an auto-suggestion process which gives you the experience of the training: the sport is not a matter of physical movements anymore, but it is only limited to the psychological level. The focus, finally, gets back on the human being and the architecture returns to be just a neutral and elemental object to its service.

Behind the Wall Spaces for creative minds

n Behind the wall the duplicity of the wall is hidden. Indeed it is both a boundary maker and a device through which to observe the surrounding landscape and what happens inside the structure. The topic of the house with a low fence is not so far from the Sicilian reality: in fact examples can be found not only in the houses near the natural reserve of Capo Murro di Porco, but the Lighthouse itself is a striking example. The wall, and consequently the development of the project, is an extreme version of this concept: the high wall replaces the low wall and the functional blocks, placed along the perimeter, try to break this “barrier”. The wall is not continuous, but is interrupted at the existing buildings: it allows, not only to make the old visible from

the new, but it does nothing but emphasize the existing buildings. The poetry of the landscape has meant that the choice of the type of hotel fall back on the lighthouse art hotel: in a very different reality from the urban chaos, here the artist can nourish his soul and can better express his creativity, surrounded by a striking landscape and a surreal quietness. The creation of a room without a roof, placed on the fulcrum toward which all the blocks look and natural projection of the lighthouse toward the sea, offers an additional place, much more intimate, in which to reflect, find themselves, think and alienate themselves, this time away from the creative ferment that is inside the structure.


It is not time to pretend Water - earth - air. The new construction inserts itself in this ecosystem and it does not claim to pretend to be the fourth natural element. It declares its artificial being through the compactness and solidity, creating with the existing Lighthouse a new landmark.

The wall hides, does not steal Behind the walls, inside the structure, everything is an open-air public space. Every surface between the blocks becomes a place for meeting, talking and enjoying the life. Cuts on the floor frame and give breath to the large variety of autochthonous plants.

The sky in a Room Three walls, three frames, three points of view. Placed in the fulcrum and at the end of the cut, this space without a roof is the natural projection of the Lighthouse: a place for thinking and observing the landscape.

functioning of the microchip, the technology that accompanies us every day. As the different elements of the microchip are activated at passage of the electric current, so the set-up areas are lit thanks to the flow of visitors who will live km278 in an unusual way for a night. The system extends along the beach and the Madonnina del Pescatore is its starting point. The wood is used for the structure of the stages and the benches, tnt and welded to the external finish and the TNT and the welded mesh are used for the external finish. The connections between the areas are made

by U metallic profiles, the vertical elements for the exhibition of the selected projects and the division of the spaces are made by construction fences. All the materials correspond to the criteria of traceability on the territory, easy assembly and complete reversibility, once the event is over.

C.A.C.G. Center for the Contemporary Arts Gresleri

The Study Centre for the Passionist Fathers, in

Ceretolo of Reno (BO) was designed by architect Glauco Gresleri in 1971 and over the years has undergone many vicissitudes: by the slowness of the work, until the total indifference and the total abandonment of the building site. The project aims to recover, recycle, redevelop this wreck, (that now is called by youths “the monster of Casalecchio”, both for its size and for the state of degradation and the visual impact it has towards the hills around Bologna). The intervention is minimal: destroy as little as possible, trying to redevelop the spaces with the least

possible intervention. The action is “pierce” the wreck with overhanging blocks, which contain laboratories, housing, a library and a restaurant. It is a real parasite architecture: a practice that here in Italy is little known, but that is often adopted from countries of Northern Europe, (as in the Netherlands and Germany), to redevelop the old structures.
