Why has Pope Francis so strongly desired and called this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy? In his homily on 11 April 2015, the Pontiff answered this question in his customary simple and clear way

“…a question in the hearts of so many people: why a Jubilee of Mercy now? Simply because the Church, at this time of great change, must confirm the presence and closeness of God more firmly than ever. This is not a time for distraction and we must remain vigilant and reawaken our ability to focus on the essential. It is the time for the Church to rediscover the mission which the Lord gave to it on Easter Day: be the sign and the instrument of the Lord’s mercy (cf John 20,21-23). That is why the Holy Year must keep alive the desire to understand the signs of tenderness which God offers to the whole world and, above all, to those who are suffering, alone and abandoned, and also without hope of forgiveness or feeling loved by God. A Holy Year to feel strongly within ourselves the joy of being loved by Jesus, who, like the Good

Shepherd, came to look for us when we were lost. A Jubilee to understand the warmth of his love when he takes us on his shoulders to bring us back to the Lord’s house. A year in which to be touched by Jesus and transformed by his mercy, ourselves to become witnesses of mercy. That is the reason for this Jubilee: this is the time for mercy. It is the right time to heal wounds, to avoid becoming tired of meeting those waiting to see and touch the signs of God’s closeness, to offer everyone the chance for forgiveness and reconciliation. Let the Mother of Divine Mercy open our eyes, so that we may understand the task which faces us, and allow us to achieve the grace of experiencing this Jubilee of Mercy with faith and fruitfulness.

What the logo means The image marking this Jubilee, which is the work of Father Marko Ivan Rupnik, is highly unusual. Full of metaphoric symbolism and allegories, it is the “sum”, the theological summary of the Misericordius. I am including this brief and clear text to allow better understanding of its meaning: “The image, beloved of the ancient Church - as it indicates the love of Christ completing the mystery of his incarnation and redemption - shows Jesus carrying a lost man on his shoulders. The drawing is created in a manner to show how the Good Shepherd touches the flesh of man and with such love as to change his life. One detail is clear.

The Good Shepherd takes humanity on his shoulders with extreme mercy, but his eyes meet those of the man. Christ sees with the eyes of Adam and Adam with the eyes of Christ. Thus, each man discovers in Christ his own humanity and the future which awaits him. The picture is set inside the Mandorla, another symbol beloved of ancient and medieval iconography, which indicates the combined presence of two natures, divine and human, in Christ. The three concentric ovals, which become gradually lighter going outwards, evoke the movement of Christ taking the man away from a night of sin and death. In contrast, the depth of the darkest colour also suggests the mysteriousness of the love of God, who forgives everything. Pope Francis has written a special prayer for this Jubilee and a hymn has also been composed by Father Eugenio Costa, with music by Paul Inwood.

Meaning and origin of the Jubilee

The word to Jubilate has two meanings, as a verb meaning to feel joy and, when used with the noun “year” it identifies the period when the Jubilee is promulgated, also known as the Holy Year, a period of time when the supreme Pontiff grants plenary indulgence. The origin of the Jubilee Year dates to the Mosaic law and there is testimony of this in the Old Testament. The word Jubilee comes from the Latin Iubilaeum which, in turn, derives from a combination of the Hebrew word Jobel-ram’s horn, Jobil-return and Jobal-remission. Every fifty years, on sounding of a ram’s horn, the Jewish people start celebrating the year of release, intended as redemption, liberation from poverty, suffering or marginalisation. Each person also retook possession of “their own”, intended as property and family. This led to the return of lands and houses to their former owners without any payment, cancellation of debts and freeing of slaves. In the New Testament, Jesus completes the Hebrew Jubilee in an ideal prospect of emancipation, state of grace, compassion in the sense of mercy and the start of salvation, giving it a full and deep spiritual meaning based on the concept of forgiveness. The first certain and documented Christian Jubilee was in 1300. Towards the end of 1299, huge numbers of pilgrims came to Saint Peter’s in Rome, perhaps attracted by rumours of a ”One Hundred Years’ Indulgence”. This led Pope Boniface VIII to extend this “Forgiveness” for the duration

of the year 1300. He issued a Bull granting a plenary of indulgence to those who visited the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul outside the walls the required number of times, 30 if Roman or 15 if a foreigner, and sanctioned it to occur every centennial year. The flow of penitents continued unabated and included such illus-

trious names as Cimabue, Giotto, Carlo di Valois and Dante Alighieri, who mentions it in his Divine Comedy. Pope Clement VI, from his seat in Avignon (1305-1377), allowed the second Jubilee to be called in 1350. Pope Urban VI established a frequency of 33 years to commemorate the earthly life of Christ, while Pope Nicholas V redu-


ced this to 25 years and the second Jubilee was in 1450. In addition to the two basilicas, visits to St. John Lateran and St. Mary Major were also enjoined. For the Jubilee of 1475, Pope Sixtus IV enriched Rome with the Sistine Chapel and Sisto Bridge on the Tiber. In the Jubilee of 1550, St. Philip Neri founded the Confraternity of the Most Holy Trinity to look after the pilgrims. Around 300,000 flocked to Rome in 1575. For the Holy Year in 1700, Pope Innocent X founded one of Rome’s major charitable foundations, the San Michele a Ripa Hospice. In 1750,

St. Leonardo erected a large cross and 14 shrines in the Coliseum to celebrate the Stations of the Cross. In 1800, Napoleonic rule prevented Pious VII from celebrating the Jubilee. In 1950, Pious XII told pilgrims to act for peace, social justice and assistance for the needy. The Jubilee of 2000 announced by St. John Paul II established that, to gain a plenary indulgence, it was enough to go to a Shrine of one’s own Diocese and offer assistance to the sick, imprisoned, humble and needy. Objectives The purpose of the Jubilee is to ensure that any believer may profit from a plenary indulgence, meaning remission of their sins. A pilgrimage must be made, even only within their own Diocese, as a sign of true conversion, access to the Sacrament of Confession for the truly repentant and taking of Holy Communion. It is also necessary to pray for the Pope and for his intentions for the good of the Church and the entire world. Another primary objective is putting the motto of the Jubilee into practice: “misericordes sicut Pater”, meaning to be merciful to our neighbour as the Heavenly Father is with us, a concept already clearly expressed in the “Lord’s Prayer”, but Pope Francis wants to reiterate and widen this concept, personally involving us and urging us to practice these virtues.

How to be merciful? In his customary fashion, the Pope has indicated simply and easily the way to be merciful: follow the rules of the 7 works of bodily and spiritual mercy. They are simple, almost obvious, easy to remember and, most importantly, must be practised daily:

With this Jubilee, Rome will have a Fifth Holy Door, also called the Door of Charity, at the Caritas hostel at Rome Termini station, and it will be opened personally by Pope Francis. Using this as an example, the Pope has ordered that these Holy Doors of Charity and places of welcome must be opened without distinction between race and religion and has expressed the hope that each Diocese will have its own Holy Door of Charity.

San Salvatore in Lauro Jubilee Sanctuary

ating to 1600 and dedicated to the Madonna of Loreto and the Centre of Spirituality of Saint Pio of Pietralcina since 2007. The historical pilgrimage from Castel Sant’Angelo to St. Peter’s includes a brief stop at this church in the heart of the oldest part of Rome, which has been the route taken by Popes and Jubilee pilgrims for centuries. The first holy building dedicated to San Salvatore was built on a pagan temple, erected among the laurel trees, from which the name “Sancti Salvatoris de Lauro” derives. It is called the Jubilee church for two reasons: firstly, because it is a sanctuary, permeated with a profound and intense spirituality, almost tangible, which embraces and surrounds you, and secondly, since it has been designated by Cardinal Ruini as a place of meeting, prayer and spreading of the spirituality of Saint Pio of Pietralcina. In addition to the important reliquaries of this great saint, there are also numerous others, such as those of Saint Jude, apostle and cousin of Jesus, protector of lost causes, who was martyred on 28 October in Persia, at the age of 70. On that date, the Sanctuary paid tribute to his glory with celebrations and prayers. Other Saints whose reliquaries are kept there include Saint Peter and Saint Paul of Rome. Closer to us: Saint Philip Neri, Saint Bernadette, Saint Josèmaria Escrivà, founder of Opus Dei, the beautified John

Paul II, Saint Pio of Pietralcina. The faithful ask them to intervene with God through prayer. Rather like our lawyers in Heaven. Pope Francis has decided to honour two great saints during this Jubilee: Saint Leopoldo Mandic and Saint Pio of Pietralcina. They were both Capuchin monks of the Franciscan order, apparent opposites, but with many points in common. They were both born in May, but 21 years apart, Saint Leopoldo Mandic on 12 May 1866 and Saint Pio on 25 May 1887. The former, whose real name was Bogdan Ivan Mandic, was born during the Austro-Hungarian Empire at Castelnovo di Cattaro, in Dalmatia, to a Bosnian family, Saint Pio, whose real name was Francesco Forgione, was born in Pietralcina, Benevento, to a peasant family of

humble origins. The earthly path of these two priests allows us to understand how they were made saints, not only as examples of life and faith, but also because both showed total dedication in the ministry of confession. The value of confession is the message which the Pope sends us. It is only through confession, sincere penitence and taking of Holy Communion that absolution of sins and therefore the Mercy of God may be obtained. It will be possible to pay homage and pray to Saint Pio and Saint Leopoldo on 3-4-5 February 2016. A solemn procession will start from Piazza San Salvatore in Lauro on 5 February 2016 and head towards St. Peter’s Basilica, passing along the oldest route on foot. Some of the pilgrims will also pass through the Holy Door.


SAN LEOPOLDO MANDIC went to the after-school club at the monastery of the Franciscan Capuchin monks, in the Veneto, established in 1688, when the area was under the dominion of the Republic of Venice. He showed the desire to take Holy Orders at an early age and entered the Udine seminary, then, at the age of eighteen, the one in Bassano del Grappa –Vicenza, where he took Holy Orders and received the name Brother Leopoldo. He continued his studies of philosophy and theology at the Padua monastery and was ordained as a priest in the Basilica della Madonna della Salute in Venice. He soon showed the desire to enter the Order and did so at the age of eighteen, when he received the name Brother Leopoldo. He wanted to work as a missionary for the union of eastern Christians in his homeland, so he dedicated himself to studying the Slavic languages and modern Greek. However, poor health led to other duties and to a position as confessor. His dream of being a missionary therefore vanished. He always operated in the north-east, in Capodistria, Bassano, Venice and Padua, where he took confessions until his death. at the age of 56 on 30 July 1942, at dawn, fulfilling his duty as confessor with obedience and humility until the evening before. SAINT PIO OF PIETRALCINA manifested his desire to take Holy Orders at an early age, perhaps influenced by the deep Catholic faith of his mother and his acquaintance with Brother Camillo, an almoner who frequently stopped in Pietralcina. He entered a monastery at the age of 15 and took the name

Father Pio. He was ordained as a priest at Benevento Cathedral in 1910. His health was poor and, to help him recover, he was given accommodation at many monasteries in the Benevento area. On 28 July 1916, he entered the San Giovanni Rotondo monastery and remained there until his death (23 September 1968). He received the stigmata while praying before the cross in the monastery chapel in 1918, and the wounds would remain open and bleeding for 50 years. Tireless, he created the “Prayer Groups” and worked for spiritual and material charity, founding a modern hospital – La Casa del Sollievo e della Sofferenza, and took confession. He was surly in nature and let no one off lightly, so the “lukewarm”or agnostics approached him with trepidation. He had the ability to read people’s hearts and minds, knew the words to shake or console them, the conscience and the soul which, in any case, indelibly mark spirit and faith. His celebrated holiness just prior to his death brought thousands of pilgrims from across the world and he received and listened to them all, passing up to 16 hours a day in the confessional, leading to him being called the “Apostle of the confessional”. CHAPEL OF THE TRANSFIGURATION A subtle presence at the service of the territory A church in a shopping centre? Strange ... but true! The Chapel of the Transfiguration, in Rome, is the only example of co-existence between the “sacred” and the “commercial”. A year has now passed since inauguration of this place of worship and the experiment appears to be working! The idea for this project came from the keen mind of Robert De Balkany, owner of Euroma2, who died recently, and the far-sightedness of Cardinal Vallini, vicar of the Diocese of Rome. The chapel is a 200 m2 marquee and has seating for around 120 people. Every Sunday, priests from the parish of Saint Mary, Star of Evangelism, who are responsible for pastoral care of the Chapel of the Transfiguration, celebrate mass at midday for a group ranging between 40 and 60 people, always different, who take the opportunity offered. The chapel, particularly after the marquee was moved to the new site, is also being used by the people who work at the administrative/busi-

ness complex inside the shopping centre. Meetings with catechists and prayer meetings are organised throughout the year. Near Christmas and Easter, a Mass is celebrated for all workers in the area, to boost mutual acquaintance. The Chapel of the Transfiguration is a genuine social and ecclesiastical workshop. It is clear that, in our modern society, there is a strong need for the “sacred”, but also how a quality presence must be the response to this demand. That is why, as Advent approaches, spiritual exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola will be offered during the lunch break (from 13.15 to 13.45) to prepare for Christmas. The meetings will be held on the following Mondays: 30 November, 7, 14 e 21 December. Obviously, during the Jubilee of Mercy, our Chapel of the Transfiguration will be present with all those who wish it at the Jubilee organised by our bishop, Mons. Paolo Lojudice, on Sunday 31 January 2016.

Communication will also be assisted by a website and an e-mail address, where it will be possible to obtain information on current initiatives and propose ideas and projects. We are starting the second year of this amazing experience of dialogue between different areas, at the service of the territory and its citizens, with a great deal of enthusiasm. Interview with

NICOLA PANKOFF The painter, illustrator and musician. But, above all, “maker of dreams”. In his studio in Arona, he has been creating surreal paintings, which he defines as “devices for making people happy”, for over 40 years. Many of his pictures are used by traditional chocolate and paper companies and are a blaze of colours (his own creation) and imaginary visions. We met Nicola Pankoff on the eve of a highly unusual initiative sponsored by Euroma2, in which 4 of his various exclusive illustrations will be depicted on ATAC tickets during the Christmas season.

COLOURS ARE DESIRES “The Great Russian Easter Overture” by Rimsky Korsakov. Then she would take my hand and take me to the cinema to see “Invasion of the body snatchers”. She would move from one interest to another and knew how to keep my curiosity alive. My father was an excellent musician and artist and my mother was an extremely good painter. I grew up in an environment full of creative stimuli. And the tradition is continuing: my son is a painter and my daughter is starting to paint now ...

How did you become a painter?

Christmas features heavily in your work. What is Christmas for you?

My passion for painting dates to my infancy and the fairy tales I was told. My grandmother was my greatest teacher. She was a highly educated woman and, although I did not do particularly well at school, having her by my side was an enormous help in my artistic training. I remember, when I was 6 or 7, when she called me to come and listen to the music of Miles Davis. Immediately afterwards, she would have me listen to the

My image of Christmas is the one everyone wants, with snow. In my family, on the Russian side (my mother), we are not Nordic but almost Chechen, and on the Italian side (my father), we are from Puglia. Ancestrally, I have both the sea and the steppes in my heart. But I still love the mountains, as an icon more than anything else, because I do not really enjoy the snow, but I like painting it. My snow looks like whipped cream, however

it is never cold in my paintings, because they are imaginary. There is a dreamlike and clearly childish side in all your paintings. What are the dreams of Nicola Pankoff? My dream is the image of an unpolluted world. I do not mean primitive nature, but a nature where everything has its place, thanks to the work of a few people who, in my paintings, resemble elves. These gnomes keep things tidy with taste and without gaudiness, because the gaudiness is already there, in the beauty of nature itself. There is also love and noble sentiments such as brotherhood and tolerance in my paintings. Music and painting: which came first in your artistic career? They came into my life at precisely the same moment. I did very badly at school when I was 15, 16. I stood outside and waited for the students


to come outside, desperate because they had art homework. I offered to do it for them for a small fee. In the meantime, although I was not particularly religious, I went to church because there was an organ and I liked playing it. The priest encouraged me to practice, because he wanted me to play at Mass, but that never happened. When I was around 19/20 years old, when I started creating my first paintings, I joined a small musical group and, since I had a good ear, helped by several expert members of the group, I soon learned to play the notes and cords and became a keyboard player. What is the difference between your creative approach to the canvas and the stave? The difference between painting and music is that music is completely abstract and therefore potentially a more noble art. Obviously, there is also foolish, schematic and predictable music. I have done various things in the musical field. I did some work on refining sounds for De AndrĂŠ.

I created the sounds in the same way I create colours, I was the forerunner of the so-called sound machine. When youngsters come to my studio and discover my synthesisers, they are surprised and find it hard to believe that an old man like me has all this paraphernalia. I had the good fortune to be a musician during a revolutionary period for instruments. I myself, who was already using synthesised sound, had predicted that this revolution would take 20-25 years, but everything changed in the space of just 6-7 years. I now play concerts with my pictures, in movement, with real musicians, because otherwise everything just becomes plastic.

Craft plays a central role in your artistic persona.

Looking through your biographical notes, there is something about a first exhibition in 1973 where a problem almost put an end to your career as a painter. Would you tell us about it?

Let us say that I am a bit of a Renaissance Man. After 45 years of making colours I have become an expert, I am a colour consultant, I go to companies and speak in acronyms, I know what is needed in chemical terms. I am passionate about

What is behind your technical passion for colours? It came from the need to have perfect colours. It is a bit like a carpenter who is not happy with poplar wood to make a violin, but prefers a wood with more precise characteristics. The world of colours is vast, a genuine universe. Painting has allowed me to travel and hold exhibitions everywhere. Every now and then, I find postcards of places I do not even remember visiting...

The Art Gallery in question was called Grifone. It was me and three other painters. When the

NICOLA PANKOFF exhibition ended, the gallery owner told us he was going on holiday, but would pay us when he got back two weeks later. When we returned, there was no sign of our paintings or the gallery, nor yet the money which was owed to us. I went home, feeling like Harlequin whose coins have been stolen. My dear companion at the time, who became my first wife, helped me reflect on the fact that I had sold around twenty of the thirty-two paintings I had taken to the exhibition and that was reason enough to feel satisfied, not to give up and to keep painting. Two months afterwards, I took part in another exhibition with thirty paintings, and I managed to sell thirty-six. Since my studio was above the gallery, I painted the extra ones during the exhibition, on request of the gallery owner. Which artists have most inspired you? Primarily Bosch, the pioneer of fantasy art. There are also many others. Gauguin, Bruegel, Van Gogh and naturally Picasso, the artist who marked the turning-point in Twentieth century art. Do you recognise yourself as a surrealist? Yes, but mine is pop art, in the true sense of the word. I always thought I would never become rich with painting, but that I would be able to maintain my family, make them love me and live in a peaceful town like Arona. The term pop art fits my paintings perfectly, but not my music, which is more difficult and less accessible. They do resemble each other, however, like sisters. Are you pleased with the tributes paid to you over recent years? I never would have thought that my paintings would capture the attention of Art curators with a capital A. The greatest compliment is when people recognise me. Being recognised is very important for an artist. Whether or not you are good counts for little. Chagall, for example, was not a particularly good painter, but he was marvellous. Colours are the focus of his paintings.
