Happy New Year! How to Keep New Year Resolutions Happy New Year everyone! Well, it’s not the New Year as of yet…I was just pre-staging. Getting ready for the New Year is a big thing for most of us. It is at this time we start throwing away the extra baggage that took us a whole year to realize needed to go. We will make promises to ourselves that we will lose weight, get in shape, make new friends, get rid of old friends, get better with our finances, etc. We say to ourselves, “2013 will be MY year!” But will it?
How Will 2013 Be My Year? Is it Enough to Just be Determined? The easy answer would be “If I’m determined enough, I will MAKE it my year…” But let me ask you something…how has that been working for you? I’m sure you had the same feeling when you were getting ready for 2012. How does all that fire and desire get put out so easily by the third week in January? You’ve been at this game for some time now…it’s obvious that determination is NOT enough! And it never was… Determination is needed, yes…but that alone will NOT create a change in your life. Let’s say that the determination is the foundation of a house. Yes, you need a foundation to build a house upon, but you cannot just lay the foundation down and say that you’re done building (unless you want to live on a slab of cement. Hey whatever works for you, I guess).
So What Must Be Done? Show Me How to Keep My New Year Resolutions Let me share with you what MUST be done to ensure that you keep your resolutions. If you want to finally relieve yourself of the heavy burden of not following through your Happy New Year resolutions year after year…if you want to finally make a change in your life and stick to it, then follow these two steps: 2

-Change your environment -Change your habits We are all creatures of habit. We are also products of our environments. You are where you are at today because of the habits you have formed, and the environments you have immersed yourself in. For example, this is why most folks struggle with diets…because they are temporary fixes disguised as permanent solutions. Diets do not create the environment to form habits that sustain weight loss. If you do not gradually weaned yourself from your previous eating habits and physical (or lack of) activity, then the urge for that greasy hamburger will creep up on you and you will revert back to your old ways…while gaining your weight back. Therefore, you must make a LIFESTYLE change. In order to do that you must create the environment that encourages weight reduction-forming habits. If you have not developed the habit of setting aside a portion of your income to take care of your debt, then going HAM with paying off the credit card or loan will only be short-live. The strain of making such a drastic change goes against what you are accustomed to doing (which is not actively paying down your debt)…and you will revert back to what you were doing before. What also happens in a lot of cases is that financial emergencies come up, and paying off of your debt ahead of time is no longer a priority. You convince yourself that you made it this far while still in debt and things will be alright eventually. Mission ABORTED. Then you’ll be singing the same song again around this time next year…I challenge you to prove me wrong. More importantly…I want you to challenge YOURSELF to prove me wrong. See you in the New Year!
P.S. If you are going to take a stand for your life, finally make changes and say “2013 will be MY year” and mean it, let’s lock arms together and strut into 2013 the right way so that you will know how to keep New Year resolutions as well!
