What Gohan Taught Me About Entrepreneurship November 29, 2014
Share this post and help spread the love! Pay attention. Let me tell you the story of Gohan, one of the characters in the successful cartoon show Dragonball Z. By the time you finish this post, you will see how Gohan’s story will inspire you just as it inspired me.
If you are not familiar with the show, it’s okay, I don’t think I’ll be giving any spoilers because what I’m about to share is only a small part of the show. Before I get into the importance of this Gohan character, let me give you a quick back story of my experiences with anime. Before I was ever put onto Dragonball Z, I thought anime shows were just like any other cartoons I used to watch as a child. I thought they were purely entertainment with no meaningful story line. I had seen a few anime shows, but was never a big fan of the genre until Dragonball Z.
According to Wikipedia:
Dragon Ball Z follows the adventures of the protagonist Goku who, along with his companions, defends the Earth against an assortment of villains ranging from intergalactic space fighters and conquerors, unnaturally powerful androids and near indestructible magical creatures.
What I discovered would change the way I looked at anime as well as I looked at my business…and entrepreneurship.
You see, Gohan was half-human and half-Saiyan . Saiyans are basically an alien warrior race that took pride in fighting, always striving to become the mightiest of all beings in the know universe.
Gohan’s father, Goku, was a Saiyan…and had become the strongest being on the Earth. Little did the world know, that there was a hidden power deep within Gohan…a power so deep, that it would only reveal itself during bursts of rage! The rage would come out when Gohan saw his family and friends get hurt. And when he unleashed that massive power, even as a child, he would even exceed the capabilities of seasoned warriors who had tasted the battlefield before he was even born.
But as soon as the beastly power appeared, it vanished…
For the longest time, Gohan could not control his power. He did not know how to tap into the hidden power. For a time, he didn’t even believe in himself to even think of bringing it out.It wasn’t until a fellow warrior sacrificed himself did Gohan realize that he had been playing small…he had been holding back for the fear of what could possible happen…he was scared of his OWN STRENGTH.
But after he saw this friend give his life to protect those he cared about, did Gohan realize how self-ish he was. The sacrifice could have been avoided if Gohan had just stopped being a wussy and take out the bad guy. After reflecting on the feelings of regret, sorrow, and helplessness something happened…
HE SNAPPED!
It was at that moment that he could not depend on his father Goku, who he had always looked up to and depended on to bail him out of trouble. If there was anyone who was going to settle the score, it would be him! Long story short, Gohan unleashed and accepted his hidden power. It was nothing to be feared, but to be harnessed and used to defend the people he loved and cared for…it was time for him to “release his inner badass!”
Now, what does have to do with entrepreneurship? What Gohan taught me about entrepreneurship was that we all have a gift, a hidden power, waiting to be unleashed to the world. As we wait on change to come in the form of a heroic figure who swoops in to save the day, we miss the fact that we are the very heroes the world has been waiting for!
It’s time to dig deep within yourself, my friend…you are more powerful than you could have ever imagined. What is it going to take for you to “snap?”
