FEYZIN, A PRIORI

Why working in a industrial area? These territories arisen from big urban plannings are never connected to the city, although being physically linked. Architecture is missing there and there is no notion of “Housing“. The contemporary problem of the future of these territories interests us because it targets as the hostile imagination which dismiss these industrial areas, as their character of non-city with autistic buildings. The in-depth transformation of the zone thus passes by the immediate integration of architecture, a possibility of living immediately which would then make the area mutate. Aim : manage to make the demonstration that it is possible to live immediatly in a context which is A PRIORI not at all made for that and which will not mutate immediately.

Housing Feyzin (France) 2015 Team : RĂŠmi Olibo

HOW CAN AN INDUSTRIAL AREA BE A PLACE OF COMFORTABLE HOUSING ?

it might be more open on the landscape when you can see it, and thicker when you can see a factory building on the plot besides yours. This thickness, can evolve and is considered as room itself, depending on which room is next to it. It can be both a dressing

room, a laundry, a storage room or even a bathroom if next to a bedroom.

011

This project is seen as a process. A process of etablishment on a plot of land. Every plot and his neighborhood can be different, thus the project can take some different forms, number of buildings, ways of openings. The idea is a wall work, considering

BARTENHEIM, AMBIGUITY

We had the chance to visit the village with all the personalities of the city council and it was a great opportunity to understand all the territory stakes. Bartenheim is located between to the trinational metropolis of Basel (Switzerland) and the city of Mulhouse. The need to densify such a territory is a contemporary subject, the main question is where and how? We wanted to go beyond the question of densification, asking us how to live in a country like this one. We wanted to recreate a former ambiance in that village, creating a density, both social and physical. To create that density we used the proximity with some retails and school complex. The image of the medieval city, in its constitution, its wealth of shapes, passages, of proximity, was the starting point for reflection and has never left us.

HOW TO RESTORE THE ”HEART” OF A VILLAGE WICH LOOKS LIKE A CITY ?

DIPLOMA , 5TH YEAR

020 As a start of the project we noticed some abandonned plots and voids which were properties of the city council. We began with that plots of lands, deleting the useless warehouses and filling all the empty space. We considered all that perimeter as an extruded

volume. Then we stood back regarding the actual houses, windows, doors, accesses, which allows us to define a limit to not be crossed. The last point was to drill holes on the project, to create patios and interior courtyards in order

to provide natural light in all the appartments.

Morphogenesis

DIPLOMA , 5TH YEAR

022 Creating patios and courtyards means nearness, means vicinity. To deal with such a subject we worked with a specific type of window and a specific material. Brick, as a material of facing, allows to create thick walls. Painted in white, it reflects the sun and brings light inside the appartments. As in the Nordic culture, a window

is seen not only as a way to provide light and fresh air inside, but a way to decorate and put objects on it as well. When you arrange objects on the firstground of your window, the background will disappear for those who are looking from the outside. That’s why we have created a shelf directly inside the window and put some thin pieces of metal to avoid diagonal look.

Vicinity is also a question of proportions with your neighbours. In order not have the feeling to be watched all the windows of the living rooms are equivalent.

ODE TO THE PROMONTORY

This intervention attempts to bring together the near and the far, taking advantage of the location of Pieusse. What is close is the intimate, the housing, the private space. What is distant is the wealth of landscape, the view, an exceptional situation. Linking the two is considering the city from the threshold of a door to its distant horizon. Collective space in a village is essential, is an entertaining place of sharing. The expansion of the old fabric and streets in Pieusse results in extremely rich situations on which we rely to mesh the city and reveal its asleep potential. Thus we proposed three distinct ways of intervention : - Public intervention at ground level - Public/private intervention within the whole building - Private intervention about new forms of housing

For both inhabitants and bystanders, we put forward the quality of the great landscape, giving access to it. The intervention can take the form of a gazebo extending into the slope, or a tower. The tower allows the reception of itinerant traders providing a solid shelter, and serves as an observation promontory above.

029

Dilution of the intimate / collective limit. The private intervention has repercussions on public space below and offer new exploitable spatial qualities. The thickening of the housing allows its extension, the installation of balconies or outdoor terraces. The light structure allows the use of obvious and everyday needs of the locals (drying clothes etc ...).

HOTEL & SURF CENTER

This hotel, located in Carcavelos, in Lisbon’s suburbs, is taking place in an urban context which is strengthened by a strong relation between a large beach and a forest. The paths are related to the former walkways inside the forest. Thereby the main access is surounded by trees, below a portico of a verticality referring to it. The complex is not only a hotel, but a fully furnished training center for professional surfers, taking advantage of the situation on the border of one of the biggest surf spot of Lisbon. It usually hosts surf competitions and big events. The difference between two programs suggests a break between two units articulated with the main walkways.

THEATRE SET FABRIC

Located on an urban project around Avenida da Libertade in Lisbon, espacially on Parc Mayer, this project is related to the neighbour theatre recently refurbished. This site characterized by the presence of many former theaters is convenient to the implementation of a theatre set fabric. The building consists on a large hall without walls where the structure is volontary involved. It allows to construct big sets on free space, using different materials, as metal, wood, paintings... and to bring it directly to the theatre. Half underground, the fabric has to receive natural light, provided by some windows on the walkable rooftop terrasse and translucent walls.

CULTURAL CENTER

This project of a cultural center is etablished in the central square of the brand new urban project in Villeurbanne. According to the diversity of the context, this center is including a multi purpose hall, a music school, an exhibition room, a library and its archives. The building by itself looks like a concrete monolith pierced by some thin stripes of windows. It includes the pedestrian/cycles path, main axis of the project between two walls, framing and creating new relationships with the context. The complex gets in touch with the topography of the new steep-sided square hosting some activities like bars and restaurants. The exhibition room is directly in contact with the square and has the opportunity to be fully opened for some special events.

Creche Marcy l’Étoile (France) 2015 Team : y.architectes

With a strong lack of space within the existing facilities the municipality needed a new creche and medical center for the inhabitants. The location is part of a “green corridor“, thus the stake was to enhance the nature and include in our project a strong landscape dealing with an existing ditch. The project is a simple rectangle plan, where the living spaces have been thought as modular spaces bathed in light thanks to large windows facing the south. We proposed a temporary division of space with the use of curtains in order to be able to enclose the main living space as required. To provide natural light into the bedrooms the roof has been carved and folded and allows a constant amount of light from the north. Drawings, 3D model

Museum extension Cork(France) 2016 Team : McCullough Mulvin Architectes

The Crawford Gallery in Cork (Ireland), major cultural center of the city recently made a call to architects to propose new ideas to extend and enhance the collections. Within Mc Cullough Mulvin Architects we answered this call proposing a new tower, which is not only a museum, but transform the existing gallery in a destination, a place where you want to spend the afternoon, enjoying old and modern collections, as well as a panoramic restaurant overlooking the city. SERGENT NOCTAMBULE

First prize of the student competition organized by «Grands Ateliers de l’Isle d’Abeau» in order to design an art set for the «Fête des Lumières 2011». The basic premise of this project was the huge absence of light in the middle of the Sathonay square, the complete lack of emphasis of the central statue. Our intervention, sensitive but strong, consists of its fine lighting. It asserts itself, visible from all the neighborhood.
