The premise of the design proposal moves from the consideration that the landscape of the strait of Messina can be read as a complex stratification of destruction and reconstruction of architectural artifacts, a landscape of abandonment where the political, economical and social shifts are recorded together with the dramatic natural events. The industrial and the agricultural landscape represent the two main categories of abandonment that can be found in Messina and Reggio Calabria landscape. The industrial landscape is mainly located along the coast, while the agricultural landscape of abandonment is situated along the small streams called Fiumare.

In both cases the wall represent the architectural element that, stripped by its bare function, characterizes such a landscape. The following project elaborates a strategy for the city of Reggio Calabria in which the wall is reimagined and becomes the structure of the intervention and in which the abandoned agricultural landscape is reintegrated in the urban fabric, not creating physical connections but rather stimulating a new system of production that will use the five elements of leisure, knowledge, cultivated lands, productive facilities and housing to generate new economies that will transform the city in a field of production.

LANDSCAPE CONSUMPTION the study of the landscape consumption during the last century in Reggio Calabria shows that the urban fabric developed mainly between the rivers. For this reason it is possible to find portion of unspoiled landscape along the streams and inside the city.

THE SYSTEM OF FIUMARE the streams that connect the hills to the sea represents one of the strongest element of Messina and Reggio Calabria Landscape. These natural elements are dry for the most part of the year but they are charcterized by a large flow of water during winter.

The wall is recognized as a device to structure the territory and as in instrument to protect the city by the overflowing, in as far as it runs all along the rivers in Reggio Calabria enclosing an area that has been completely forgotten by the inhabitants, both form a physical point of view but also from a social and cultural one. The significance of the wall is here considered as a positive presence, since it preserved large portion of territory from the urban occupation and, in so doing, it underlines an area that has the potential to be reused. In this design proposal these neglected areas are seen has a possibility to generate a new system of production that consideres not only the production of material goods (agriculture is the first activity that can be reactivated in these areas) but also the production of culture, leisure and knowledge. The recognition of the impossibility to work all along the rivers, simply transforming the empty space in a linear park, led to the choice of defining 5 different samples along them that underline different conditions but that can also behave as the first core for a future development of the production. These interventions aim to activate a new economy in different part of the city, in order to transform it in a field of production. In all the cases the fiumare divide two completely different urban tissues and the area between these tissues is the space where it is possible to redefine the borders and create new connections between the different parts. The overall strategy is to create for each case a possible scenario that can work as a machine of production using 5 different elements: leisure, knowledge, cultivated land, productive facilities, housing (where needed). These scenarios are presented in a diagrammatical way in order to suggest a tool of intervention rather than a specific project.

THE WALL The wall as an instrument can be considered as a device to structure the terrioty or as an element to protect the city by the seasonal overflowing. In both case it delined an area that is completely segregated from the city.

POSSIBLE SCENARIOS OF INTERVENTION Each different possible intervention is structured to work as a machine of production that work around the 5 elements of leisure, knowledge, cultivated land, productive facilities and housing. LEISURE: The production of leisure is connected to the idea of the seasonality of the rivers. The Fiumara, in fact, can host different activities according to the level of water that run all along its bed. During summer the bed is completely dry whereas the rest of the year is characterized by a weak amount of water the usually dosen’t exceed the level of the embankments. In this way it is possible to create a system of terraces in which the different acrivities can take place when the water runs only along the bed of the river. Occasionally the overflowing casues natural disasters and reach the city, for this reason the 3 meters high wall is the costant element that characterized all the landscape along the river. KNOWLEDGE: the production of knowledge can be related to the production of food. In the different examples it can be represented by an agricultural school, by laboratories of research and so on. CULTIVATED LAND: all the landscape along the rivers was used in the past as cultivated land but nowadays this practice seems to be completely forgotten so that it is possible to speak about the archaeology of agricultural landscape. The reactivation of this system of production is considered as a good opportunity for the city that, as any other city in the South of Italy, is passing through a difficoult economic crysis. PRODUCTIVE FACILITIES: the harsh landcape of the city can be the ideal location for factories or greenhouses that can work as a completion of the cultivated lands for the production of material goods. HOUSING: the housing development represents the element that links all the different interventions. It can be implemented according to the different density of the site of intervention.

PROJECT SITE The last case, the fiumara between the “low-density� city and the sprawl, is the case that has been studied in detail. The different layer of production will form the overall strategy of the masterplan. Leisure, knowledge, cultivated lands, productive facilities and housing work together in order to create a system that can be autonomous, even if the project cannot develop on the other sites along the fiumara.

PRODUCTION OF LEISURE The first element of production is represented by a park along the fiumara that will provide a leisure area that can host different functions in the periods in which the fiumara is dry or mostly dry. The redefinition of the limit is reinforced in all the masterplan in order to assure the protective function by the overflowing but also in order to mark the limit of an area that has to be protected from the urbanization and that has the potentiality to be used in a flexible way according to the different period of the year and the quantity of water the run along the stream. The wall is used also in this part as a device to structure the territory. The strategy of unpacking the wall will be an opportunity to create a series of terraces on different height that represents the different levels of the flow during the year. The university will be the element that physically connect the two part of the project, providing the production of knowledge. This agricultural school will also be the element that links the various functions in as far as it need to use both side of the river for didactical purpose (the urban gardens and the workshop inside the greenhouses).

RITHINKING THE BORDERS The actual position of the wall, on both side of the river will be reimagined according to the different character of the city that they are defining even if in both of them will be located a new residential development. The wall on the north bank (below) is the one that separates the river from the city, so the idea is to create a fragmented system in which the limit is assure by an alternation of residential towers and the improvement of the natural embankment of the river. This towers will create a new background from an to the city. The border on the south part (next page) represents a compact closure in as far as it is located in a part of the city that it is not urbanized yet and it constitutes a strong boundary between the harsh landscape of production and the city. The overall strategy is to shape these buildings as a series of parallel strips that will host the distributional elements and the services. The limit is treated in both cases as an infrastructural element. The wall at the ground level on the south bank of the river, in fact, will host a internal vehicular street that will provide accesses and parking spaces to the houses. The main corridor along the fiumara in the building on the south bank will be an infrastructural wall that provides on the upper level a public pathway from which it is possible to create new visual connection with the landscape even when the water overflows and reaches the wall.

Project area The ORMUS residential complex is located in Cagliari between Piazza Giovanni, the Music’s Park (Parco della Musica), Via Dante and Via Salaris. It consists of a flat-top building on the two lowest levels (ground floor and basement) and four residential blocks of six levels each.

The project area is located in a strategic position, in so far as it is sited between two city borders: the consolidate city and the new city.

The two urban typologies that surround the urban block of the project are also different in their morphology. The old town is characterised by streets, surrounded by compact buildings, whereas the new town is described as “open”, because the buildings are scattered on the area, making the pedestrian space more flexible.

The potential multipurpose nature of the complex is enhanced by the two lateral streets, which represent two of the main arterial streets of Cagliari: Via Dante as the commercial way, Via Sant’Alenixedda as the cultural one.

The most important problems of the complex concern the flat-top building, as its potentials are not fully being met. The internal pathways are made up of corridors which link the different streets that surround the block. Moreover the present functions (banks, furniture shops, ect.) are not able to pull a lot of people in. The courtyards, directly lit by natural light, are inaccessible as is the basement, where there are only stock rooms and some parking spaces. The vertical permeability is absent, the only links are represented by the stairs that lead people to the houses.


Initial concept Based on the distinction between “closed” and “open” city it was assumed three different hypothesis of intervention on the flat-top building. The first presupposes to reuse the open city model by scattering small buildings on his two floors. In this case the paths would be more flexible. The second one suggests the closed model through the study of linear pathways that cut transversely and longitudinally the building. In both cases it is generated a conflict with one of the present urban models. The third scenario seems to be the most suitable. It assumes to mix the two design strategies to create a hybrid system which contains both the characteristics of the closed and the open city.

The decision to create a compact block along Via Dante and Via Salaris, cut only at certain points in order to allow the entry into the complex, derives from the purpose of arousing the curiosity of people that walk along the commercial street. On the contrary, in the remaining space we scattered smaller elements. In addition we wanted people to stay inside the complex, once entered. For this reason, the flat-top building was made more permeable and new functions, more attractive than the previous, were added. Another important aspect is the increase of vertical permeability, achieved through the dismemberment of the ground floor’s garret. In this way we created a variety of physical and visual connections between the ground floor and the basement, ensuring sufficient lighting at the same time.

The two blocks along Via Salaris and Via Dante are designed to be introvert. Small windows and the narrow, red, fully glazed paths are the only openings to the outside. The first works as showcases for shops, the second are designed to pull people in. The exterior finished of the elevations of these two blocks is made of polycarbonate, that allows the passage of light, but hides the functions that take place inside. On the other hand the elevations along Via Sant’Alenixedda and Piazza Giovanni are completely extroverted.

Elevated square The project plans to reserve all the surface of the roof garden to the families that live in the complex, especially to the children. Indeed it was thought to realise a playground made up of coloured glass cubes that, sliding down and partially invading the space of the lower floor, become real skylights to the ground floor. Thanks to the use of additional openings, wooden paths and vegetation, these cubes are located as much as possible far away from the dwelling of the first floor, in this way they don’t bother the residents.

Roof extension

In regard to the roof extension, it was planned to add one small room at least to 80% of the houses of the complex. These small rooms can be used for different functions (storage, room, study). They’re also energetically self-sufficient, thanks to the photovoltaic panels installed on the roof. In addiction it was thought to realise different urban kitchen gardens, each belonging to a single unit.

Private space Public space

The project idea comes from some considerations about the features of the city blocks. First it was observed that buildings usually stand on the edge of the lot, producing a compact front, whereas many empty spaces are generated inside the blocks. These spaces, generated by the diversified growth of buildings inwards, are mainly unused. The second consideration was about the way of living the city. Public life always develops all around the city blocks, where commercial and public activities generally take place. This last thought is not valid for the project area because, due to the two big roads on the sides of this area, people don’t feel safe to walk around the blocks. Hence the idea of the URBAN TURNOVER was born: bringing the empty spaces outside, on one hand they can be used, on the other hand it can be created a protected area, just for pedestrian use, in the internal part of the blocks. Moreover the empty spaces are raised three meters above the level of the street, in this way they become semi-private spaces and are used like courts for the new buildings.

To reinforce the idea of a path developed inside a sequence of urban blocks, a cultural route was added to the physical one: it was chosen to create a school of art, in which different disciplines (music, dance, theater, sculpture, etc.) take place in each of the internal empty spaces. This NETWORK OF NODES presupposes to realise an academy of graphic arts in the block of project.

The project block is located in Cagliari, between Viale Diaz, Via Sonnino, Viale Colombo and Vico Armando Diaz. In this area there are two pre-existing building that it was decided to preserve because they are new apartment houses. All the other buildings were demolished, especially because they was neglected. The shape of the internal pathways is designed in order to obtain a succession of small and large spaces, so that people are more involved to enter inside and to discover the hide places. All the public functions (stores, bars, school of graphic arts, parking spaces, etc.) are placed in the ground floor. The upper floors contain private flats and dwellings for students.

Design studio II

nected to the stairwells by a private aerial walkway, that ensures more privacy than the more common system in which a single landing enables to reach different flats. These walkways lead to the private courtyards and then they ideally continue inside the flats, emerging as bay-windows on the elevation. Each of these looks onto some of the historical sights of the city. The bay-windows are the only openings on the main elevation, since the entire complex is purposely designed introvert in order to ensure sufficient privacy, absent in the rest of the neighbourhood. To compensate the lack of transverse streets it was eventually decided to divide the complex in two parts, realising a transverse passage that is sheltered by a pedestrian platform. This passage, that connects Via San Giovanni with Via Ozieri, increases the stream of pedestrians in the area, becoming the public space of the complex.

By the analysis of the historical centre of Cagliari we determined the following features: high prevalence of gothic blocks, narrow streets, predominance of longitudinal roads rather than transverse, compactness of the buildings along the street, lack of privacy inside the houses due to the excessive closeness of the overlooking buildings. The project plans the construction of a housing estate in an urban void, result of the bombings of World War II. The concept considers the positive features of both the detached house (private courtyards, privacy) and the urban typology of the high density housing building (neighbourhood re-

lations, proximity to the services). Hence the idea of combining them into the same type, creating detached houses with courtyard, but within a multi-storey building. In order to achieve this aim we studied three different types of housing: a linear type, a L-shaped type developed on a single level and a L-shaped type developed on two levels. These three typologies were combined to realise different building blocks. The high construction density that characterises this area does not allow proper lighting and ventilation of the buildings. For this reason the complex was extensively studied in this respect. The design response to this problem was to place the parking lots and the stairwells in the shaded areas. Furthermore, separating the dwellings from the stairwells it was guaranteed a greater number of free elevations, increasing the natural light sources. The decision to separate the stairwells helped increase the level of privacy in the flats. Indeed each of these is con-

ARCILAB 09_ Looking for a new identity Project published in the magazine: Future Arquitecturas 23/24 14-26/09/2009 Project designed with Felipe Castro Darvich, Luca Casula, Valeria Erasmo, Matteo Frongia, Amanda Ivens, Roberto Podda, Andrè Souza, Valentina Vurro

The analysis identified transport links with major towns (Cagliari, Sassari, Oristano) and the major infrastructure (ports and airports). The presence of Mount Arci complex has emerged as the most significant physical feature, as a costant visual reference. The great challange is to find a strategic approach that is able to porpose effective solutions, but consistent and respectful. The strategy aims to strengthen the network between the towns of Ales, Morgongiori and Pau with the creation of thematic areas at most significant nodes. The hypoteses proposed are intended to guarantee to each municipality the opportunity to deploy its network of services, being part of a supra-municipal integrated unit.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT: it was necessary to find a common language of intervention, which was exportable and adaptable. The centres of Ales, Morgongiori and Pau are characterized by the presence in the territory of paths, alleys from which frame the landscape.

Morgongiori West area - The area is designed as a public space, as a screen of information, media and knowledge capable of showing what tourists can visit. The area becomes a sqaure-terrace from which to enjoy the landscape.

East area - This area proposed the inclusion of new accomodation facilities. We reproduce a typical settlement of these areas, where private space is separated and protected from the public. The accomodation is desgined as a functional unit consisting of two double room with their own indipendent service, and a living area common to both kitchen and roof terrace.

Aims The aim of the competition “Teulada, il centro... al centro” was that of redeveloping the riverside and the historical centre of the small village in the South part of Sardinia. The requalification of the historical centre is done through a linear system of public spaces and green areas in which all the cultural, commercial and social activities will take place. Besides, the new system of public spaces is linked to the historical urban tissue, expanding the equipment of services to a neighbourhood scale. In a territorial scale the project aims to create thematic paths that will give a new value to the cultural and naturalistic elements of the territory by implementing tourist services. The requalification of the riverside contributes to enhance all the activities in the area (trade, catering , arts and cultural activities) that discover in this way a new urban and open air dimension. The reorganization of mobility give the priority to the creation of new pedestrian and cycle paths, in order to promote a sustainable use of the historic centre.

Analysis of the territorial links The town of Teulada has a great importance in the territory thanks to the presence of the port, tourism catalyst for excellence, and for the persistence of important local traditions related to crafts and manufacturing. Besides, the potentiality offered by the valorisation of local products, create the possibility to organize thematic pathways, such as the wine and food one, and open the opportunity to rediscover the territory.

Strategies for the territorial and urban development Teulada represents the biggest town in the surrounding territory but today it doesn’t seem capable to work as the main touristic attractor for the area. The strategy for the requalification of the historical centre moves from the intention to put Teulada in the centre of all the main activities that can take place in the territory. The segregation of vehicular , pedestrian and cycle traffic aims to create a variety of thematic path that connect the centre with the port area, while in the summer a system of shuttles will help the tourists to reach the main point of interest in the area. The regeneration of agricultural production (organic and biodynamic sector) and the refurbishment of the ex fishmonger for productive and touristic purpose allow the creation of a wine and food path, that will work in parallel with the other thematic path (cultural, commercial, naturalistic, historical and so on).

New urban viability

Park and green areas

everyday mobility The main purpose of the new viability consists in the reduction of vehicular traffic inside the town thanks to the creation of an outer ring road where the heavy vehicles will be channelled. Inside the city centre the intention is to relieve the traffic in the main streets and create new cycle and pedestrian paths. On the right side of the project area a bike rental system and the bus stop for the shuttle will be located. The parking spaces are located on both side of the area, releasing all internal roads by the presence of parked vehicles. Only along the river the old parking area will be maintained, nevertheless during the events this area could be transformed in a public space.

The new system of green areas is thought to be a new space for the neighbourhood, with playground and sport facilities. The linear park along the river will become both a space for the events and an area for the temporary craft workshops that are a tradition of the town in the summer period. The sculptures produced in the past by these laboratories will be placed along the park and in the garden of the historical Villa Ines that can be used as the new museum of contemporary art.

During the events that will take place occasionally during winter and almost every evening during summer some vehicular road will be closed and the historical centre will benefit from the presence of new pedestrian streets even if the main vehicular connections to the parking spaces will be mantained.

The creation of a widespread market will give a new value to all the commercial activities that are located in the area. This marked will be supported by the realization of small flexible boxes that are thought to host different functions, from the sale of local products to the services for tuorists.

Settlement Strategy Opposite to the sprawl of the recent expansion of the suburban areas, the new development strategy restores the traditional courtyard type as a sustainable, low density, compact model. The public housing and services are included into the new linear park, which work as a connection structure for the north expansion and completes the urban system of public spaces. The transversal comunication is realized through neighborhood public spaces connected to the linear park by cycle and pedestrian tracks.

Hybrid Landscape Territorial scale analysis showing the three interrelated systems: the urban fabric, the agricultural pattern and the natural one. The growth of the city of San BartolomĂŠ towards the sorrounding cultivated land generates a hybrid landscape in which the expansion of the suburban areas dissolves into the countryside. A new pattern structuring the built and green areas of the project site is designed according to the lines of the surrounding fields, estabilishing a communication between the city and its territory.

Services and Facilities The urban densification strategy and the interconnection (ecological and low-speed) of public spaces results in an implementation of the exchanges within the area and between the project site and the city. The inclusion of public spaces and neighborhood services increases the inner connection, while the urban-scale services generate a new centrality in an otherwise peripherical area.

Boundaries The proposal takes into account the suggestions of the development plan regarding the definition of a green boundary. This ideal border is intended not only as a limit for the urban expansion, but also as an ecological sport and pedestrian pathway, connecting the northern and southern suburban areas to the surrounding landscape. Another connection from north to south, crossing the city center, is designed, while two low-speed cycle and sport tracks complete the new sustainable mobility system, ensuring transversal connection in each expansion area.

The main idea of the project is to design the tiny flat so that it looks as big as possible, within the limits allowed by 39 square meters. For this reason, the living room is designed to be very large, hence the slogan LIVING in a LARGE SPACE (in which it is used the double entendre of the word “living� in order to express not only the verb to live but also the main room of a flat). The bathroom is the only fixed part of the apartment, it contains a small sauna, as well as the toilet and the shower.

STEP 3: Guest room


Movable wall

A movable wall separates the living room from the study / bedroom. This wall is planned to be multifunctional: a mac 31 In is hung to a rotating panel; another panel rotates to become a desk; a one side of the wall contains a shelf for more than 100 dvd; in another shelf on the back side it is possible to put books; an opening compartment houses a lot of cd rom. This movable wall can flow, thanks to a runner, up to overlap completely to the bath. In this way the living room becomes more spacious and, when the table is open, you can easily watch the tv on the Mac 31 In, which is now located in front of it. Once closed, the sliding wall defines the space of the study / bedroom

The hideable kitchen is designed to be as compact as possible in order to keep out a large portion of the wall above it. On this wall you can project the images using the projector placed on the wall in front of it. When the kitchen is closed, it seems to be a simple furniture of the room. When it is open it shows that contains all the elements required by the competition. In one partition of the kitchen there is the space for two table, easily openable, that can comfortably accommodate 12 people.
