Valerie Jenness is the Professor and the Dean of the University of California, Irvine. She had been offered the position of a Dean in School of Social Ecology. Before being the Dean she was the Professor in the Department of Criminology, Law and Society and the Department of Sociology. She has also been a research scholar who had sincerely researched on the several fields, especially those that have been lying untouched previously. They must have been neglected all because the society is prejudiced enough and is quite nervous to face the challenges that will be thrown toward them.

Her book Appealing to Justice concentrates on informing the people about the conditions that prevail inside the prison. If you read the book you will come to know the California State Prison has as much as thirty three prisons. However, all of them are over-populated. Overpopulation causes poses several problems for the prisoners. They are not given proper medical facilities. Sometimes overstuffing leads to the theft of their personal properties.


The prisoners are entitled to complain against these conditions and to demand for a change. They can do this by filing a grievance. However, the grievances are passed through long review system. The prolonged review system takes up a lot of time causing the prisoners to lose hope in the review system.
