INITIALLY, the invalids’ house’s function was to take care of war veterans and to prevent them from becoming beggars on the street. in the 19th century it became a place where the “nobility of the army” was buried. but it was also a cemetery for civilians since under the 30 .000 graves which were laid out between 1750 and 1950 , there were just 18.000 soldiers buried.
