Ernst van Alphen Sculpture as a specific medium is rarely investigated within a deeply cultural, philosophical context, nor within visual art itself. Whilst discussions about instal lation art, performance art, or other 3D art forms are widespread, the discourse on sculpture seems to be stuck in historical, material, or thematic frameworks. This is a loss for our understanding of art in general, and of sculpture in particular. In order to assess contemporary art practices, one should have a better under standing of the logics that are at work within sculpture as a medium, and how they differ from other art forms. This book explores ‘seven logics’ of sculpture— not as a historical overview, but with a contemporary analytical approach, drawing from literature, philosophy, psycho-analysis, architecture, and mundane daily culture—that help understand specific manifestations of sculpture and the active perception by the viewer. It relates to aspects such as the senses, the skin, the body, objecthood, narrative dynamics, the shaping of space, fragmentation, and montage. Logics of Sculpture opens up new ways of look ing at, understanding, and appreciating sculpture, placing the medium at the heart of art’s experience; how sculpture can be shaped, assembled, encountered, seen and embodied.

ARCHIVING

and Fluid Identities NEW ART & ARCHIVE Inclusion/exclusion • Ordering • Connecting

Productive Archiving discusses a variety of problems of archival organizations. It mainly focuses on the follow ing three issues with archival organizations that are usually overlooked: first, the question of inclusion in or exclusion from the archive; second, the loss of individ uality and specificity in the archive, the danger of homogenization; and third, that archiving may become a form of pigeonholing, boxing specific identities into a confinedAvoidingspace.the archive because of these problems is not an option, because archival organization is a basic symbolic mode on the basis of which we organize our lives, the past, the present and the future. What this book suggests is that it is best to explore constructive and creative solutions for these problems. Especially artistic archives seem to be able to develop these pos sible solutions, because they offer speculative, unexpected ways to order, select, and narrate specific information, and bring about new connections and archival Themes:organizations.ArchivingIdentities; Archiving Memories and Histories; Archiving Object. The essays are interspersed by visual artists’ contributions.

Difficult problems do not always require far-fetched solutions, but in order to arrive at the solution a change of perspective may be in order. The City as a System advocates such a change of perspective in the study of the urban environment. It posits that designers who wish to truly improve the functioning of the city and solve tricky urban problems cannot afford to only focus on the spatial manifestation of the city, but should also conduct thorough research into the underlying system, into the operation, use, and performance of the urban fabric.Theauthors view the metabolism of the city as that of a living organism. The urban body—as the place where much of our resource use culminates—plays a crucial role in the transition towards a more sustainable living environment.

CATNOSAT Indigenous Art, Knowledge and Sovereignty

The Sámi Pavilion is a Čatnosat (= connections, net works) project that revolves around three key elements: trans-generational relations, holistic Sámi knowledge and learning and Sámi spiritual perspec tives. This book serves as a project in its own right to provide further reflections on Sámi art and knowledge, considering Sámi notions of non-linear time and the centrality of story-telling, sound and the spoken word.

The core of Čatnosat features the art works of The Sámi Pavilion’s artists Pauliina Feodoroff, Máret Ánne Sara and Anders Sunna. Around this are two sections, neither beginnings nor ends. In one, we find an experimental short play and poems, as well as sto ries bringing political, and Sámi spiritual and philo sophical perspectives. The other section includes a dialogue with the artists; an essay highlighting the centrality and span of Sámi knowledge creation across the ages, and a glossary of Sámi words pivotal to Sámi ways of being, doing, seeing and thinking, also highlighting the Sámi philosophical relationship to their language. The book is an exercise in Sámifi cation, that highlights the importance today of Indig enous holistic perspectives, and that centres Sámi Indigenous wisdom in all fields of art and living.

Solidarity has re-entered the global zeitgeist with resounding force in the last decade, driving new thinking to counter the systemic failures and abuses of our society. The Art and Solidarity Reader consid ers the agency artists, collectives, and art institutions have in building the radical visions of care and solidarity needed to transform the conditions of our col lective new and historical material, the Reader narrates various micro-histories of artistic sol idarity globally from the 1970s to today, in relation to the multiple crises of migration, neo-colonialism, rising radicalization, inter-religious conflicts, class divi sions, new technology, heteronormativity, and the environment. It emphasizes the centrality of artist-led empathy and personal connectivity in building net works of solidarity and concrete actions that generate profound transformation in society.

The concern for material existence on our planet is more pressing than ever. Making Matters spells out various roles that visual artists and designers play fac ing these issues. Collective action is necessary and inevitable. Collective action often changes the artist’s identity and ways of working: from individuality and autonomy to collectivity and collaboration, both locally and globally. This has given rise to new kinds of collective art and design practices, based on changed ideas about the meaning of making. Artists work together with non-artists, make products for their local environment and take on multiple identi ties, such as researcher, community activist, computer hacker, or business consultant. The boundaries between art, design, research and activism become blurred or are dissolved entirely.

Laurie Cluitmans (1984, NL) works as a curator of contemporary art for the Centraal Museum in Utrecht and is also an independent art critic. In 2016 she received the Prize for Young Art Crit icism for her essay on the garden by Derek Jarman and Ian Hamilton Finlay.

On the Necessity of Gardening tells the story of the garden as a rich source of inspiration. Over the cen turies, artists, writers, poets and thinkers have each described, depicted and designed the garden in dif ferent ways. In medieval art, the garden was a reflec tion of paradise, a place of harmony and fertility, shielded from worldly problems. In the eighteenth century this image tilted: the garden became a sym bol of worldly power and politics. The Anthropocene, the era in which man completely dominates nature with disastrous consequences, is forcing us to radically rethink the role we have given nature in recent decades. There is a renewed interest in the theme of the garden among contemporary makers. It is not a romantic desire that drives them, but rather a call for a new awareness of our relationship with the earth. Through many different essays and an extensive abecedarium, On the Necessity of Gardening reflects on the garden as a metaphor for society. From Arcadia to Guerilla Gardening, Bomarzo to Little Sparta, Roberto Burle Marx to Fritz Haeg, the Anthropocene to Vibrant Matter: a brilliant and radical A–Z of garden history and garden politics.
