welcome
Welcome to Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit Here is some advice to make your trip a little easier and more enjoyable. TIME ZONE: The entire state of Jalisco is on Central Time, as is the southern part of the State of Nayarit starting from Guayabitos to the Ameca River and including Nuevo Vallarta. BUSES: A system of urban buses can bring you from one end of the bay to the other and all the spots in between. Current fare within Puerto Vallarta is $7.50 pesos per ticket and passengers must purchase a new ticket every time they board a bus. Hold on to your ticket. This is your proof and insurance should anything happen. Bus destinations are typically written on the front of the window. Those with a ‘centro’ sign will drive through downtown Puerto Vallarta and those with a ‘tunel’ sign will drive through the tunnel roads that go behind the city. TAXIS: There are set rates within defined zones of town. Do not enter a taxi without agreeing on the price with the driver first. Price is per trip not person unless there are more than four passengers. Take note of the taxi number on the outside door and where it picked you up. If you lose an item this information will be vital to attempting to get it back. MONEY EXCHANGE: To exchange money you will need your passport. Best option is to use your bankcard to withdraw funds from any ATM machine. ATM’s in the banks are the safest to use and generally charge lower fees. USING PESOS OR USD: Businesses must their prices in pesos and they may also post the prices in any other currency they choose. They cannot refuse to accept pesos. Some service staff may appreciate being tipped in USD and others in pesos. If you are concerned, ask. TIPPING: How much and when you tip are personal choices and unless otherwise noted a 10-20%
tip on food and beverage and services is standard. Tip the kids and seniors who bag your groceries. They work exclusively for tips. Have change at the ready for musicians and clowns that ride the buses – typically tipping 5 pesos or less. Taxi drivers do not receive tips unless they go to extraordinary lengths. DRINKING WATER: Puerto Vallarta’s water (at the source) is certified pure enough to drink. For many who live here long term, we drink from our taps with no issues. For those on vacation, it may be better to stick to bottled water. EXPORTING PETS: Falling in love with a rescue animal is easy – and it’s easy to take them home with you. The process is quick and inexpensive. You need a certificate of health from a local vet with the appropriate inoculations, among other things. The time of year that pets can travel in the cargo hold of the plane may be your biggest challenge. Contact your airline to double-check their requirements. COMMON SENSE: Just as you would not walk around your hometown drunk and belligerent, it is not acceptable to do that here. While Mexicans are a forgiving bunch, basic politeness is appreciated. Pay attention to your surroundings. Pay your bills. Be courteous. And have fun! DRINKING AND DRIVING: First off – just don’t. The consequences are not worth it. Taxis are cheap and plentiful. Fines are as much as 15,000 pesos. You can be taken to jail and your vehicle impounded. There are many checkstops on the weekends and you will be asked to blow if they suspect you have been drinking. LEGAL SYSTEM: Not knowing the law is not a valid excuse in Mexico or anywhere. If you find yourself caught in a legal situation be aware that the system works much differently here than you are likely used to. Immediately contact your consulate for assistance. Calling in Mexico Calling phones in Mexico can be tricky. There are different codes you need to use depending if you are calling landlines or cellular phones and if they are local or long distance. LONG-DISTANCE CALLS FROM WITHIN MEXICO For national long-distance calls (within Mexico) the code is 01 plus the area code and phone number. For international long-distance calls, first dial 00, then the country code (U.S. and Canada country code is 1), so you would dial 00 + 1 + area code + 7 digit number. CALLING CELL PHONES (FROM A LAND LINE) If you are calling from a landline within the area code of the Mexican cell phone number dial 044, the 10 digit number. Outside of the area code (but still within Mexico) dial 045 and then the 10 digit phone number. Cell phone to cell phone only requires the 10 digit number. PHONE CARDS Phone cards (tarjetas telefonicas) for use in pay phones can be bought at newsstands and in pharmacies. Pay phones do not accept coins. When buying a phone card for pay phone use, specify that you would like a tarjeta LADA. CALLING TOLL-FREE NUMBERS Some toll free numbers work from Mexico to the US and Canada, but many do not. Those that do work are often not toll-free. You need to dial a different prefix. To call the following toll free prefixes, dial as follows: 800 numbers Dial 001-880-then the number 866 numbers Dial 001-883-then the number 877 numbers Dial 001-882-then the number 888 numbers Dial 001-881-then the number

or those of us who live here and have children and/or jobs it’s different from those of you who getting to lounge by the pool, or partake in the weekday charity brunches or play bocce on the beach every day (Yes, I’m talking about you Frank!). And that’s fair. You’re likely on vacation or retired and you deserve your break. As Editor of the Vallarta Tribune, I straddle this line of living like I’m on vacation but in fact I’m busy working or taking care of my family. So, while I should be out there more and each week 10,000 people read my words but I probably only ever meet a couple of you face to face. Case in
point, I was at Colette Zarry’s fab 50th birthday last week where a number of people were shocked to see me out and quite a few more had no idea who I was until we were introduced. “Oh, you’re Madeline,” they say. Those who know me well know I’m not one for the spotlight so when Cindy Bouchard asked if she could interview me for her column, I hesitantly said yes. I mean, I like to talk about myself as much as the next person, but in reality I sat on her article for a couple weeks, feeling a little embarrassed about the exposure. But here it is… Madeline exposed on page 31. Now, I am going to be at Medical Matters on February 13th at the Marriott Casa Magna in Marina Vallarta, if you wanted to meet in person. Pam Thompson has put this event together now for seven years and it just keeps growing. If you are considering a move to Mexico or are looking for more affordable healthcare solutions than perhaps you can find north of the border, this event will give you the answers you are looking for. Check out page 14 for all the details and a schedule of the seminars. Please note, you do not need to register for the event. It is open to the public and you may come and go as you please. Wear your stretchy pants and enjoy a delicious lunch at the

Marriott afterwards. Corazon de Niña is holding their 4th Annual Open Your Heart Gala at the Marriott on February 14. This fundraiser goes towards supporting the boys and girls who come from abusive, negligent homes. If you haven’t made plans for dinner – this is a great cause that includes dinner, dancing and lots of great door prizes. And a big welcome shout out to Taste Restaurant at Casa Cupula who has joined our fold. To Don, Penny, Kennedy and everyone who works at Casa Cupula, welcome. Taste is one of Vallarta’s premier restaurants and on Saturday evenings they have live Bossa Nova music running until March 4th. They also do a wicked Sunday brunch. Next time you’re looking for a great dinner – check out Taste and let them know you found them in the Vallarta Tribune. We are short on space again this week – so I’ll make it quick. Please remember to say no to plastic straws, don’t touch the whales and please tip those who assist you (especially the kids and seniors who bag your groceries, as they only work for tips) generously. Perhaps I’ll see you out and about this week. Safe travels, Madeline

Miss Hope Springs and Shawn Pelofsky premier at Incanto
I
ncanto welcomes award-winning singer and comedian Ty Jeffries, as Miss Hope Springs, from London’s West End beginning Feb. 11 at 7:00. And direct from Los Angeles, Shawn Pelofsky returns with more stand-up comedy beginning Feb. 16 at 9:30. inger-actor-comedian Mr. Ty Jeffries performs all-live as Miss Hope Springs, singing her award winning repertoire of uniquely catchy original songs in her laugh out loud, move you to tears, one-woman show. Her unique blend of finger snapping pop, romantic rumbas and sassy bossa novas, takes you on a roller coaster ride ‘From the pits to the Ritz…and back again’. Miss Hope Springs is the towering blonde creation of composer, lyricist, and comic actor Ty Jeffries (son of the late British screen legend Lionel Jeffries). Since 2012, his glittering alter ego has been starring in London’s West End top cabaret rooms. Aptly dubbed, ‘Tragi-comic
S
genius,’ Miss Hope Springs won Best Cabaret Brighton Fringe, and Best Cabaret The Stage. Miss Hope Springs will play Feb. 11 - 27. As seen on Showtime, Chelsea Lately and at The World Famous Comedy Store, Los Angeles based comedienne and actor Shawn Pelofsky returns to Vallarta for a limited run. Shawn’s quick wit and
legendary audience interaction are the hallmarks of her hilarious stand-up comedy. Inviting her guests to “stretch it out” with her (while remaining seated of course), she delivers some hilarious one-liners and her hysterical observations on life in general. Now in her fourth season in Vallarta, she’s been busy performing all over the world for US troops and on Atlantis cruises. Shawn also recently starred in her first non-comedic leading role in the independent film, ‘Tri’ (2016). Shawn Pelofsky plays Feb. 16 - 20. Also appearing is NYC cabaret legend Michael McAssey in the piano bar Tues. - Sat. with two shows nightly (see calendar). Pianist Jean-Guy Comeau (JayGee) plays a variety of thematic evenings for Happy Hour 5 - 7 on select dates (see calendar). Feliz Dia de Amistad – Day of Friendship Event
T
his weekend don’t miss June Rosen Lopez’s Valentine’s Open House. It will be a relaxed event, with lots of treats and wine (or coffee if you are so inclined). This open house is an annual must-do event. June just got back from the gem show in a Tucson AX., and has a treasure of new gems to look; at all of which can be made into beautiful jewels. It is interesting to see what June has created. She has put her heart into her work for the last 40 years. June has lived in Puerto Vallarta for 37 years, before that she was from New York. The majority of her pieces are one of a kind. Considering that each piece is a work of art, the prices are very competitive. She also carries other artists’ work from all over Mexico. This is a great opportunity to
see inside the gallery where the magic happens! June opens her home and gallery just twice a year. She appreciates everyone to stop by and have a treat and to say hello. This party is a celebration for Dia de la Amistad (friendship day), new and old friends. Don’t miss this fun event! The location of her gallery is the same street as the new pier, Francisca Rodriquez, up the hill after crossing Olas Altas. Her home is on the corner of Francisca Rodriquez and Pino Suárez, across from the huge construction site of Pier 57. She looks forward to seeing you all this weekend. The hours are 1:00 to 7:00 Saturday and Sunday - the 11th and 12th of February! For more details you can call: 322 222 5049 or U.S. cell phone 646 338 7373 or email her at junesjewel74@hotmail.com.

Kara Chandler is Cher Believe Merv Buchanan merv@trendrecords.ca

n every one of the last 5 decades, multi award winner Cher, aka “The Goddess Of Pop”, has had a number one song on The Billboard Chart. With more than 200,000,000 records sold, she has been a major force on radio and television and in movies and pop culture publications of all stripes. She is known the world over for her sense of humour, sultry voice, unique appearance and outrageous fashion sense. But more than anything, Cher is know
as an entertainer of the highest order. With her uncanny resemblance to the famous star it was only a matter of time before a clever promoter asked Kara Chandler if she could also sing like Cher. With ten years of theatrical experience in musicals behind her, Kara easily rose to the challenge, proving to one and all that she could portray Cher, without any difficulty at all. Suddenly, Kara had a new calling. One that has served her very well. Now, after six years performing in dinner theatres, casinos, concert halls and at corporate
Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, ust home from Boutique Theatre where Dana ZellerAlexis took me places I never expected to go. I will leave the wonderful words about the exquisite music by Woody Regan the creative staging by Sue Mereante and the brilliant directing by Mark Zeller to the folk who know more of those crafts than I do. My words are that Dana Zeller-Alexis, who calls herself a character actor, used those characters to bring me to peals of laughter and the joy humans bring to one another and to painful tears of sadness living the pain, abandonment and loneliness that we people bring to ourselves and others. It is the best for me that the Boutique has brought us this season. Do go. Marilee Iverson

Dear Madeline, e read your newspaper cover-to-cover every week to find out what is happening here in PV. We are thirty year visitors to this magical city, so we love it and cannot wait to return each year. We constantly ask everyone to recommend their favorite restaurants to us. We are always interested in finding the best food, the best cooking. Ambiance may not even be 5 star so long as the dining experience is really good. With this in mind, we discovered Una Familia, tucked away on a small side street just past the Malecon. Our dinner that night was so memorable that we broke our own long-standing rule about not returning to a great restaurant only because there are so many that we would want to visit. Two years later and Una Familia has added a Malecon location at Morelos #484 (reservations 222 8558) at the old Viejo Vallarta site, above Murphy’s Irish Pub.We brought family there last evening and all four of us, having four completely different meals, each of us could not stop raving about our dinner; the views of the sunset, and most notably Edmund, the consummate owner and host, maitre d, waiter, busboy and best of all, menu selection guide. His recommendations made our experience so satisfying. Our overall experience was so good that we felt the need to share thsi restaurant with all of your readers. You have our permission to edit and correct this letter as you need to. Sandy and Jerry Meyers Chicago, Illinois

Te amo, te quiero mi amor I love you

f you think Spanish is a romantic language, you’re right! If you’d like to tell your special someone how you feel about them in Spanish, you may find it a bit more challenging than just learning the words. Saying I love you in Spanish can be a bit more complicated than in English because there are at least two different ways to say it. “Te quiero” is said freely among friends and family members but “te amo” is used to denote a stronger feeling. “Te Quiero” vs “Te Amo” Te quiero is simple. It literally translates to ‘I want you’ but is translated to ‘I love you.’ It can be used towards your family, friends, and spouse/girlfriend/boyfriend. This is the safest way to say ‘I love you’ to anyone you want to express your love towards. Te amo means ‘I love you’ as well but it isn’t used when in reference to your family and friends. This term is rarely used in general but when it
is, it is reserved for your lover/true love. You will see ‘Te amo’ in classic Spanish literature and poems.
10) Tu amor vale mas que millones de estrellas. – Your love is worth more than a million stars.
Love 1) Te quiero (mucho).- I love you (a lot / very much). 2) Te amo (mucho).- I love you (a lot / very much). More serious 3) Eres mi todo. – You are my everything. 4) Eres el amor de mi vida.- You are the love of my life. 5) Te quiero con todo mi alma.- I love you with all of my soul. 6) Cada dia te quiero mas. – Each day I love you more. 7) Estoy enamorado(a) de ti. – I’m in love with you. 8) Soy feliz de compartir cada instante de mi vida a tu lado. – I’m happy to share each moment of my life by your side. 9) Besarte es como ver las estrellas. – To kiss you is like seeing stars.
Romantic 1) He estado pensando en ti. – I’ve been thinking about you. 2) Pienso en ti todo el tiempo. – I think about you all the time. 3) Solo puedo pensar en ti. – I can only think of you. 4) Me vuelves loco(a). – You drive me crazy. 5) Estoy loco(a) por ti. – I’m crazy for you. 6) Te adoro. – I adore you. 7) Te deseo. – I want / desire you. 8) Tienes una sonrisa muy hermosa. – You have a very beautiful / lovely smile. 9) Eres la persona mas maravillosa del mundo. – You are the most wonderful person in the world. 10) No puedo esperar a verte. – I can’t wait to see you.

he Boutique Dinner Theater will celebrate Valentine’s Day by featuring Vallarta’s musical group, Time 2 Play. Shows are Monday, Feb. 13, and, of course, Tuesday, Feb. 14. In the last six years, the five musicians have entertained local, U.S., and Canadian audiences with tight fourpart vocals, as well as instrumentation on piano, guitar, violin, bass and drums. Every performance knits easy banter and spontaneous humor—the kind that only longtime friendship, mutual respect, and a shared love of performing can ensure. Solos and group numbers cover acapella harmonies, blues, jazz, country, folk, classical, as well as hilarious novelty numbers. Ballads will be performed by Joy Lehman and Garry Carson; classical piano and violin virtuosity by Lois Rogers and Mary MacLauchlan; and fresh and funny comic relief by Don MacLauchlan. Dana Zeller-Alexis continues her sold-out one-woman cabaret, “Women on the Edge,” through Feb. 11, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. She and her husband Mark Zeller, who is directing the show, have long careers on the stage around the world. Her work in “Mrs. Dally Has a Lover” earned this review: “She enters the heart of the character, etching out the perimeters of her character like a skilled jeweler.” She also won a Dramalogue Award for best actress in that role. A newly formed professional vocal octet, the Vallarta Vocalista Ensemble, will perform at the Boutique Feb. 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25. “The Rhythms of Life” is the show’s theme. The singers are all Vallarta residents: Su-

Here’s what reviewer Gary Beck had to say about the show: “Mikki wrapped us around her musical finger, and we grew in awe … Mikki not only sang tremendously, as if she was indeed Miss Francis, she narrated the story of her beginnings, and the paths she took along the way … to the top of female singers.” On Mondays, enjoy Fast Eddie’s Karaoke Party at Nacho Daddy, starting at a later time on Feb. 13, following the Time 2 Play Show, around 8 p.m. and continuing until 11 p.m. Feb. 13 is also Fast Eddie’s birthday. A big party, with activities such as our original game “Ambush Karaoke,” are in store. No singing skill or experience is required. Lots of opportunities for dancing are provided, all free of charge. S
even years ago a group of Puerto Vallarta merchants created something called the South Side Shuffle. The merchants were the owners of some of our finest shops and galleries, all located on a two-block stretch of Basilio Badillo on the south side of town. The South Side Shuffle quickly became a hit with locals and visitors alike. By popular demand it was scheduled twice a month, on alternating Fridays. To this day it is generally considered to be the most fun shopping extravaganza on the Mexican Riviera. On Friday, December 3 (from 6pm to 10pm), Vallarta will be celebrating the third Shuffle of the new season, and it promises to be the biggest and best yet. All of the seventeen participating businesses will be offering complimentary cocktails. As well as a few fun surprises, creating the kind of festive atmosphere everyone can enjoy. Although this two-block stretch (200’s and 300’s) of Basilio Badillo (and the half block of Constitucion
Street adjoining it) has some of the finest shopping in Mexico, the new and improved South Side Shuffle has several great additions, especially in the area of entertainment. Joining the Shuffle this year are two of Vallarta’s premiere entertainment venues. The first is Nacho Daddy’s & The Boutique Theatre: a blues nightclub, Tex-Mex Restaurant and dinner theatre all under one roof. Then, up the street is Act II Stages, presenting an entire panoply of international performers of every stripe. In addition to some of the best shopping and entertainment in town, the Shuffle can also boast four fine restaurants: Di Vino Dante, with its incredible wine list; Puerto Nuevo, with its wonderful seafood; Basilio Beber y Comer, with its great blend of Italian and Mediterranean cuisine; and the aforementioned Nacho Daddy’s with its terrific Tex-Mex kitchen. One of the greatest things about the Shuffle is its compactness. All seventeen businesses are located on a two-block stretch of Basilio Badillo,
and a half block of Constitution Street. Everything is close, so walking to every business is not a problem. But time is. There is so much to see, four hours is really not enough. So, for folks with specific interests, we have tried to squeeze all seventeen businesses into a few categories to help you decide where to focus your attention: GALLERIES: Ambos Galeria, Art Vallarta II, Galleria Dante and Kathleen Carrillo Galleries. JEWELRY STORES: Cassandra Shaw Jewelry, Cerroblanco Gallery, Shazel Jewelry. FOLK ART AND COLLECTIBLES: Banderas Bay Trading Company, Lucy’s Cucu Cabaña, Peyote People. ENTERTAINMENT: Act II Stages, Boutique Theatre, Nacho Daddy’s. DINING: Basilio Beber y Comer, Di Vino Dante, Nacho Daddy´s, Roberto’s Puerto Nuevo. FASHION: Colecion La Bohemia, Tonalli Tienda. All the businesses on this magical stretch of Basilio Badillo and Constitucion streets have

He also invites shoppers to try on the jewelry, and to trust the intuitive energy of the stones (many of which are Mexican stones). “Original,” “A very unique style,” “Drawn to it” and “Mystical”...all of these can be heard as shoppers try on and show off their favorite Heriko Jewelry pieces. magine – a half million pesos raised at the Fiesta Rosa recently at Oscar’s. The Vallarta Garden Club is off and running, spades in hand, ready and able to buy plants, fertilizer, water, soil, cement blocks for planters – all of it, thanks to the people of Vallarta – residents and tourists who understand a safe, strong city is the reward for making Vallarta beautiful with cleaner air, luscious blooms and glorious fragrances – all of the senses gifted by the power of a garden spreading over the city like wildflowers in a meadow. I had the pleasure last week of listening to Latcho and Andrea – the Blonde Gypsies – at Incanto Vallarta’s brand new performing arts theatre. This intimate cabaret-style room is exactly the right fit for Latcho and Andrea who have been performing around the Bay of Banderas for more than 20 years. Perhaps in keeping with Tracy Parks’s new theatre, both gypsies appeared more sophisticated and their play list included songs I had not heard before so it’s an all-new shiny and bright Latcho and Andrea. Their passion for their music – and each other – has not diminished in the slightest. The sound and light in Incanto’s theatre is wonderful and I believe Latcho and Andrea gave the performance of a lifetime last week. They will be back in March; don’t miss them. You will be able to see Spencer Day before his last concert February 13. He too, ‘dressed up’ to celebrate his first show at Incanto. I have never seen Spencer in anything but a Polo shirt and there he was in a button down albeit with short sleeves, but still! His voice – clear as a bell. I finally understood lyrics to songs I have been listening to for decades but it took him to sing them. And, he is so funny and a brilliant lyricist and pianist. Such a sense of humour – he always remains kind somehow, even skirting politics and did an amazing trip down America’s musical history decade by decade, back and back, looking for America’s best. cheek. Gently. Colette Zarry is the owner of one of Vallarta’s best known Los Muertos beach restaurants – Langostino’s. She threw herself a 50th birthday party this past weekend that could become the benchmark of all birthdays, at least until the end of this century. Her kindnesses have touched so many people and so many dogs and cats in Vallarta it would be impossible to document. Although, if you ask her how many animals
her clinic (Colina Spay and Neuter) has snipped, she can probably rattle off the numbers exactly. It was spectacular, Colette! You were spectacular. Thank you for having me and I really hope I’m around for your 100th! This just in today from Paco Ojeda: “Biblioteca Los Mangos will produce a voice recital featuring a renowned Mexican soprano, a local tenor, and a pianist, to benefit the library. This recital will take place Thursday, March 9 at 7:30 pm at the Sheraton. The repertoire will include favourite operatic arias, a few selections from the musical stage, and traditional Mexican songs in Spanish.” So, save the date – March 9, 7:30 at the Sheraton Hotel. I will have more info soon and will pass it on. Don’t forget El Placer de Escuchar, Paco Ojeda’s monthly musical appreciation series, this Thursday, February 9 at 7 pm, at the Library Los Mangos. Paco will be exploring Gershwin, et al, with guest performers. And that is it, From Here!
think we never realize how our actions as children affect our parents until we have children of our own and we get the first call from the principal. Suddenly all you can visualize is your heart, freshly ripped from your chest, dripping messily all over a plate she’s holding casually (which sounds really weird when I say it out loud). And there, on a toothpick at the center of the aorta is a tiny white flag and two words: “be gentle”. I’m fortunate that the educators in my children’s lives have always cared deeply for them and have always wanted the best for them. So my tender heart has been safe in their hands. But it takes moments like these to understand that some of the happiest moments in my life may have been a little traumatizing for my own parents. I can illustrate this with a fun story about my Mexican wedding. I look back fondly on Gil’s and my civil ceremony because it reflected my own personality so beautifully: disorganized and a bit of a disaster. We found out a week before our spiritual ceremony on the beach that the civil ceremony in Vallarta just wasn’t happening. It turns out that the Civil Registry here in town requires brand new birth certificates, even from non-Mexicans. I had one about ten years old, which was considered to be a useless sheet of antique paper here in Jalisco. They recommended that we check to see if folks in the state of Nayarit were more romantic and less concerned with the age of official papers. The nearest Civil Registry in Nayarit is in a little place called Bahia de Band eras. If you know where Mezcales is, you can find Bahia de Banderas if you go through Mezcales onto very small, very confusing, very bumpy roads for about a really long time. The office itself is tiny in size but mighty in enthusiasm to marry people, and thus we held our ceremony right there. From my point of view, the whole thing was both quirky and romantic, because the Justice of the Peace
was an earnest, wonderful lady who was so happy for us in spite of just having met us. Gilberto bought me flowers, and I was surrounded by my friends and family. But let’s take a step back and look at it through my dad’s eyes. This perspective won’t give you a great view of the ceremony, unfortunately, because he was standing in the Justice’s personal bathroom as her miniscule office was overflowing with all six witnesses. He was holding my daughter, whom he loved more than all the tortillas in Mexico, although I imagine he never dreamed of holding his grandchild at his daughter’s wedding. He was in a town he’d never heard of, in a land where he was not a citizen, and he couldn’t for the life of him make out a single word of the ceremony. He was just going on the hope that someone would say at some point (and in a most legal fashion), “I pronounce you husband and wife.” This must have been an out of body experience as a parent. Because what do you do when your child calls you up from a foreign country right before she’s about to come home forever, and tells you in a breathless, excited voice that she’s in LOVE and she’s going to STAY IN MEXICO and probably get married at some point? Do you wonder where you went wrong? Do you wrestle with questions about how your daughter’s life’s work could have taken her so far from you? Do you stay awake nights worrying over your precious child who is now inexplicably in love with someone whose values and culture are not yet known to you? Let me tell you what my parents did. They came down to Mexico and stood as witness for their daughter. They held their baby grandchildren tightly in their arms so their parents could sign the marriage license. They hugged Gilberto and called him “son”. The wedding on the beach was a few days later. My dad held my hand and danced with me on the sand. He asked if I was happy. I said that I was. And then he said what I hope I’ll trust my own child enough to say, as my heart is dangling from her hand, “Then that’s enough for me.”

Giving up the What Ifs!
How being Mexican lead me to become a holistic health coach
D
on’t get bogged down by indecision and what if’s. Do you realize how many stressful crisis moments one can accumulate in a lifetime that never happen? This is something unfortunately that we all do. I am famous for going down the ‘what if’ road sometimes taking it to the extreme. You know that road I am taking about - the What if I get in a car accident while running errands before I have to catch a flight later in the day. What if it snows on Christmas day making the roads undrivable and no one can make the celebration. What if I go into labor and there is a traffic jam... you get the point; it is ridiculous the amount of energy one can exert on something that has a very likely possibility of never happening. This, my friends, can be exhausting! What if we decided to live in the here and the now? How would that feel? What if we decided to live a life based on concrete facts? What if we enjoyed the moment-to-moment savoring all the small things instead of jumping to all these crazy presumptions? Living in the present moment is a great way guarantee a happy life. We
I would skip around, all light and fresh not having the unknown burdens weighing us down. When we do let our guard down, worry can darken the brightest day. When we are weightless, the colors are so bright and vivid full of twinkling colors and fairy dust. Perhaps this is something to ponder. Maybe I am on to something? Why don’t we all kick this ridiculous habit of living the non-truth moments, to the curb? Well, it is a new year and a chance for all of us to reinvent ourselves into our better selves. Let’s shout from the highest mountain we are going to live in the here and now and have a new lease on life. To take further action on this, we could wear an elastic band on our wrist, and the next time we take
a stroll down ‘What If Lane’ we could give ourselves a quick swift snap to bring ourselves back into the reality of living in the moment. At that moment stop, give thanks for all the real blessing in your life. Smile and let the feeling of being happy drift over your body and reroot yourself into a place of strength and confidence. Carry on with your beautiful day, all light and airy. Let the drama go, take it one day at a time, enjoying every beautiful moment. Homework: When you feel yourself feeling overwhelmed, ask this simplest question. Is this the real deal or am I living in the land of presuming? It is one or the other. Simple, cut and dry ‘eazie peezie’. You got this! Cheers to living your Happiest Life. YOU DESERVE IT!

grew up with my parents owning a Mexican restaurant. Getting tacos at school and eating chile verde burritos were common meals for me as a child. While many Mexican food staples are healthy, and my mom did a great job of keeping processed foods out of the house, there were still many food options that aren’t. I couldn’t understand why as a super active teen running track, being in cheerleading and dance, I couldn’t lose the “baby fat.” This led to a constant pursuit for the “right diet” and endless hours at the gym. I remember the first connection I made with where food comes from when my father enthusiastically, but hesitantly handed me a taco to eat at our restaurant. Sensing his reticence, I asked, “What kind of taco is it?” He replied, “Beef tongue.” At that moment, I realized that meat came from animals, something I hadn’t considered before. I began to develop an inquisitive nature
about food where it came from and truth-seeking in general. Meanwhile, my parents were beginning to develop health issues. As I grew up, I lived a rushed lifestyle, and the result was that I was consistently exhausted, stressed and became ill with debilitating gall bladder disease that would leave me doubled over in pain. Long story short, my choices were surgery to remove my gall bladder or try a natural cleanse. Not having the money for surgery, nor the will to give up a vital organ, I opted for spending twenty dollars on ingredients to help cleanse my liver. Within five days, hundreds of stones were expelled from my body. That was a pivotal moment for me and what catapulted my journey of discovery and curiosity about natural healing and uncovering more truths including demystifying what goes on in food production. Since then, I’ve learned that I can help busy, professional women over forty who are struggling with self-care, feeling old, fat and tired by showing them how they can care for themselves, lose unwanted pounds, feel younger and regain their zest for life. Because I was once there and I can help you get your zeal back.

Samira is...“Truly Tina” Canada’s Hot Tina Turner Tribute Artist Merv Buchanan merv@uvs.com
S
amira's “Truly Tina” tribute show is best described as powerful, sexy and thoroughly entertaining as she struts her stuff, belting out those familiar Tina Turner songs, just like the star herself. The big hair, great legs and provocative costumes are all there. But more importantly, Samira brings Turner's energy, voice and sassy attitude to the stage in a way that harks back to The Ike & Tina Turner Revue at its best. For years, Samira has travelled the world as one of the most in-demand Tina Turner tribute artists, from Australia, China and Guam, to Canada, the US, Mexico and the middle east. Las Vegas casino lounges, corporate events for the
world's best known companies, a concert in Beijing's Tiananmen Square are all routine for one of Canada's most popular entertainers. And in 2014, Samira had the honour of performing at Turner's former high school at the official opening of the Tina Turner Museum. Tina Turner's torrid vocals and electrifying stage presence have always been an inspiration to Samira and she has learned to replicate them with amazing accuracy and passion. She is especially influenced by Turner's ability to drench her song lyrics in passion and perform them with what has been described as “hurricane force”. Samira's performances as “Tina, the queen of rock'n'roll” are absolutely unrivaled. Her physical appearance is about as close as one can get to the star's. And her secondary career
as a fitness instructor keeps her in the top physical condition required to perform with the required energy and enthusiasm. Samira has an intense passion for her music and strives to make Truly Tina, her personal tribute to her favourite artist, “simply the best”, from “river deep to mountain high”, not just in her native Canada, but around the world. Her 2 sold out shows at last year's season finale at The Luna Lounge in Bucerias were such a hit that the venue has invited her back again shows on Thursday, February 16th and Friday, February 17th. Details are available on the venue's web site and in this publication. *Copyright 2017. No part of this material may be used in any manner without the prior written approval of the author.

edical Matters is only a few days away, February 13, 2017 at the Hotel Marriot CasaMagna. Doors open at 9am. A huge array of health-related exhibitors and speakers By the time one reads this article, we will be in the very last days of the homestretch for Medical Matters. Maybe folks are tired of hearing about it and seeing all of the publicity but, oh well. We are so darned proud of it! It is like putting together a gigantic wedding, planning for a year but getting the final details done up until the very last minute. The doors open and the bride appears but for me with this event, the doors open and the people pour in! My biggest anxiety every single year is just before we open and I think, “What if nobody comes?” Of course, they do and the rooms are packed. Sure. There are always a few glitches here and there but nothing major and the day runs smooth as anything. This absolutely could not be done without the stellar medical folks we have here. Medical Matters was created so that people can know what is available here in our area. And let me tell you, we have abundance! And luckily, “my” doctors follow my instructions as to where to be and when! I am so very proud of them all. So, get out your scissors and cut out the schedule from the Vallarta Tribune (or email me for a copy). Plan your day accordingly as to which speakers you want to see, plan on a meal or snack (discount at the Hotel Marriott restaurants for attendee’s) and plan for plenty of time to stroll through all of the exhibits. When you are at the event, look for smiling folks with neon green aprons. These are our volunteers who will do their best to answer questions, direct you. Have a little patience as well. Sometimes there are lines to get into various speakers and sometimes the aisles where the exhibitors are get crowded. There’s plenty of time and room for everyone. No need to be in a big hurry! Be sure and register with our volunteers as this year, we will have drawings of some excellent health-related prizes! There has been no February newsletter out yet (due to prep for Medical Matters) so there will be a combined February (mid-onward) and March Newsletter with plenty of our screening clinics, speakers programs available. Me? Run out of topics? Incredible but I would really love to hear from you as to some suggestions on upcoming future articles! Auxillio! We look forward to seeing you at Medical Matters. Please take some photos and send them to me! Here’s to a fluid week!

Puerto Vallarta boasts wonderful healthcare facilities and professionals and this is the chance for the Englishspeaking community to meet

marciavallarta@gmail.com Comings… Happy Hour at Incanto Vallarta’s beautiful piano bar overlooking the Rio Cuale just got better. Listen to Gabriel Reyes sing and play guitar every Wednesday and Friday at 5 pm. Gabriel’s rich voice will keep you spellbound – really. He is that good. The second the doors open at 5 the Piano Bar quickly fills up, so go early, relax on the terrace by the river for a bit to ensure a front row seat for Gabriel’s mini-concert. El Rio BBQ-Bar is hosting ‘Forever Young’ this Saturday night – the Rod Stewart Tribute concert starring Canadian Doug Varty. Doug’s two shows at the Luna Lounge in Bucerias are already sold out so if Rod Stewart is on your playlist then let’s have dinner under the stars, put our toes in the sand and be dazzled. I first heard ‘Maggie May’ on the top of the highest mountain in Cyprus. It was Christmas Day, there was snow and I was missing my family. It remains my favourite song…no pressure, Doug! The short version will do. Attention NEIL DIAMOND/ WILL CHALMERS fans! The show must go on and Will Chalmers will be returning to Vallarta to El Rio BBQ-Bar, Tuesday, February 28 to perform his incredible tribute to Neil Diamond that was explosively cancelled January 28 when a cement truck unceremoniously took out a power line and that was that.
104.3wakeupshow@gmail.com Fans in Bucerias and Guayabitos will have the pleasure of hearing Will again. …and Goings Michael Danckert left a soldout crowd at El Rio BBQ-Bar so happy after his tribute show to Roy Orbison. I asked Americans, Canadians and Mexicans scattered throughout the audience what they thought about the show: They all came up with the same word: G-R-E-A-T. One woman said she knew every song The Big O ever recorded and couldn’t believe Michael didn’t miss even one (very high) note. Michael seemed a little nervous at the beginning of the evening but with each song his voice grew stronger, the audience crammed the dance floor and the air echoed every lyric. It was magic. At least twice during the performance, Michael thanked Julio Angeles, Trend Entertainment’s amazing sound/light technical wizard for all his help putting together the show. Afterwards, Michael asked me if he was ‘okay’ as it was only his fourth time doing the show. I thought he was kidding. Almost every Tribute artist I have met has been ‘doing’ the work for years, however as Michael says, everyone has to have their first show. Or their fourth. Michael’s business card currently reads “Voice. Guitar. Music.” He will have to update and include ”Quintessential Roy Orbison”.

f you’re lucky enough to be in Puerto Vallarta with your partner for Valentine’s Day, you won’t have any trouble finding a special restaurant to enjoy a Valentine’s dinner. But how about those last-minute romantic purchases to set the mood for the rest of the evening? Old Town Valentine’s Day isn’t complete without a bottle (or two) of bubbly, which is why you should head over to Cork + Bottle in Los Mercados, where proprietor Nina Goodhope carries a selection of champagnes and sparkling wines, including French and Mexican options. While you’re at Los Mercados check out their cooler full of baked in-house cakes and other pastries in Que Rico. Their red velvet cake would definitely set the mood you’re after. The florist ROMORGAN on Lazaro Cardenas has floral bouquets and arrangements available, including decorations that can add a romantic air to the mood you’re setting. (Tip: stop by ROMORGAN early as their bouquets often sell out before the end of the day.) Hotel Zone PV Cupcakes in Plaza Caracol always has someway to say ‘I love you’ in frosting, including seasonal specialties (think pumpkin spiced cupcakes during autumn) – watch their Facebook page for all the seasonal flavours. Inside Plaza
PV Cupcakes is preparing for Valentine’s Day with delicious love-themed cupcakes. Caracol you’ll find a number of different florists with bouquets ready to take home to your better half, including tropical arrangements featuring flowers local to the region. Also in Plaza Caracol are dozens of shops offering love themed gifts including jewellery, spa treatments, massage oils and sexy lingerie for men and women. Down the street from Plaza Caracol is La Playa Warehouse, which stocks a selection of spirits and sparkling wines that are perfect for a romantic evening celebration following a Valentine’s Day dinner at your favourite restaurant. The Marina Vallarta The Marina Vallarta has plenty of places to stop for some last minute shopping for Valentine’s Day. La Europea in Nima Bay stocks
European wines and gourmet food including cheeses and chocolates – perfect for a ‘dessert course’ following your special meal. Nearby Pie in the Sky, always has a number of freshly-baked cakes and pastries to choose from – a decadent chocolate cake being exquisite choice. or ten years he was beaten; every single day, kids slapped, kicked, punched and called him names. Once, after being assaulted, Fred recalls walking home with ripped, dirty clothing. “Those are brand new clothes! “ exclaimed his mother--“What did you DO?!” “I was beat up” he said; “I DON’T want to hear it!” She replied. Fred could not find any solace. On the last day of school, while walking down a path, alone, six boys jumped out of bushes. They were about to attack Fred. “This stops now!” Fred fumed and for the first time ever, he fought back. His rage was furious and as a result, he pummeled all six boys. The next year, when returning to school, Fred discovered that fighting back had garnered him a new level of respect. No one bullied him and everyone left him alone. Despite this, Fred states he still became an angry, pot smoking SOB. He intuitively knew he was ‘different’ but could not pinpoint exactly why. Fred carried on with his life. He met and fell head over heels in love with his wife; she was unlike any other woman. They married and had one child, a daughter. Fred tells me he sold his pickup truck to buy his wife an engagement ring. In his past life, Fred worked many ‘manly’ jobs: he was a truck driver hauling logs, a cook/chef and a heavy-duty equipment operator. Eventually, as he grew tired of the constant drinking and gambling
lifestyle, he took up painting. Fred displayed his paintings in a friend’s local café; they sold very well (they were flying off the walls). As he continued to paint, his work received glowing accolades and won several awards. During this time, Fred encountered some less than desirable people; owners of an art gallery in Hawaii charged Fred 75% commission for each sale of his paintings! In another situation, his agent robbed him. Ironically after making the news headlines, Fred’s work became very well known in international art circles. “When that news broke, I could walk into any art gallery. It was an awful time, but it put me on the map!” The only reason Fred discovered the fraudulent agent, was due to a friend approaching him and asking, “why do you keep increasing the price of your paintings?” This statement puzzled Fred; “I haven’t changed the price for years, they are still $5,000 each.” “Five thousand dollars?!” exclaimed Fred’s friend. “Do you realize your agent is selling them for $30,000 to $40,000 each?” Needless to say, the agent was giving Fred $5,000 minus the commission and pocketing the rest as personal profit! In this story, we frequently mention the name Fred because this identity is vital to her, yes you read it right---her---story. Once, while his wife was out running errands, Fred was busy putting away the laundry. He picked up a ‘delightful to the touch’ dress and decided to try it on. As he pulled it over his head, he felt

ncine Peters shivers run throughout his body. “It was better than any drug for me,” he said. When he finally summoned the courage to tell his wife, he found her to be initially supportive; she even taught him about makeup and showed him how to ‘not walk like a logger.’ However, after two years, the marriage ended; she told Francine, “I have never seen you happier, I love you but do not need a roommate.” In her ‘coming out’ period, Francine was terrified to tell her mother (her father had already passed away). Francine describes her mother as “a little old Scottish lady; five foot nothing with tissues stuffed in her sleeves.” Francine’s worry was unfounded; in response to her news, Francine’s eighty-year-old mother said, “I don’t have one of those Google machines, but I’m going to learn everything I can about transgendered people!” She cried and hugged Francine; “I will love you no matter what.” With tears in her eyes, Francine recalls how several years later, her mother said in passing, “Finally, I have the daughter I always wanted.” Francine was slowly coming full circle. When she disclosed to her daughter, the reaction was less than nonchalant. Her daughter replied with: “Like I never saw that coming!” When her daughter was engaged to be married, Francine told her: “I guess I will have to revert back to being Fred if I want to walk you down the aisle as father of the bride.” The daughters’ response, “What?! NO! You are now Francine and will walk with me as Francine!” On the day of the wedding,
both Francine and her daughter walked down the aisle with both faces beaming with happiness and pride. Francine moved to Puerto Vallarta two and a half years ago. Like many others, she describes Vallarta as a “magical place.” Prior to moving here, she had quit painting for six years; she was burned out—“for fifteen years I produced three hundred paintings per year and all the galleries wanted the same thing.” Today, if you attend charity events, you will most likely see Francine donating her artwork to the cause. Silent auctions for her paintings bring in a healthy amount of money; money which Francine admits she could most certainly use. Despite living peso to peso and barely “making ends meet,” Francine prefers to help others; after all, people helped her and she wants to pay it forward. She tells me about one summer when Danny Mininni of Act II Stages knew Francine was struggling financially. He suggested she display her work on the walls of his theatre; he told her, “I want to see you make it.” She smiles when sharing this story and tells me that “now, every night, hundreds of people can see, and walk by, my work!” This story began with Fred and ends with Francine. As a lonely, solitary young boy, Fred found nothing but enemies and pain. In being true to herself and becoming the woman she was always meant to be, Francine now finds herself with “more family and friends than I ever had in my whole life.” “I may be alone,” she says (not married); “but I am never lonely.”

Top Ten Shrimp Dishes to Try
G
astronomy is one of the pillars of Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit and shrimp is one of the most traditional and popular seafood dishes. Here is the quintessential list of the Top Ten Shrimp Dishes. It’s a pity there are only ten spots, though, because shrimp
pate, coconut shrimp, mummy shrimp and breaded shrimp didn’t make the cut… (We’re leaving the names in Spanish so you’ll know what to order!) 10.- Tortitas de Camarón (Shrimp Patties) This is one of the most
popular dishes during Holy Week and Easter during Lent. The dried shrimp patties are bathed in a red sauce made of guajillo chile, chipotle, tomato, garlic and onion, where they swim with chopped nopal cactus and eggs, which are previously fried.
9.-Empanadas de Camarón (Shrimp Turnovers) Everyone knows a turnover and shrimp make their appearance here, too. There are those who only add shrimp, others add cheese with shrimp, and there are others who stuff them with a shrimp casserole made
Feb 9 - 16, 2017 www.vallartatribune.com
of shrimp, tomatoes, onion, serrano chile and cilantro. 8.- Camarones Zarandeados (Smoked Shrimp) The classic zarandeado style is usually reserved for fish, but shrimp and even octopus receive this tasty treatment. The shrimp are sliced in half and then bathed in the secret recipe from each region. 7.- Tamales de Camarón (Shrimp Tamales) Even though these are sold in almost every corner of the bay, they’re tastiest in the central coast and the northern part of the state. Not everyone knows how to make the perfect dough, the exact amount of what chiles, spices and fat to use… it’s an art! 6.- Camarones a la Diabla (Deviled Shrimp) Their name is thanks to their reddish color and spicy flavor. This is one of the simplest and most delicious dishes. Basically you fry the shrimp in butter with salt and pepper to taste, then add ketchup and Huichol sauce, bring to a boil and then enjoy!! 5.- Coctel de Camarón (Shrimp Cocktail) This cocktail is something you’ll find at nearly every seafood restaurant. Some places prepare it cold and others hot. One of the secrets of our recipe is to grind the shrimp heads and add them to the consommé to give it extra flavor. When serving as a cocktail it comes with chopped onions, tomatoes, cucumber and green chile as a garnish, plus a squeeze of lime to top it off. 4.- Camarones a la Cucaracha (Cockroach Shrimp) For starters, let’s make it very clear this has nothing at all to do with roaches! This traditional dish is basically crunchy shrimp. You take the fresh shrimp, sprinkle with
flour, salt and pepper then fry until golden and just right. 3.- Ceviche de Camarón (Shrimp Ceviche) The ceviche is closer to the top of the list. This is one of those dishes that aren’t native to the area but to the entire Mexican coast and even in the interior. There are an enormous variety of styles. It can be made with cooked, raw or dried shrimp, and there are special ingredients only limited by the chef’s imagination. Basically, you mix the shrimp with cucumber, onion, tomato and cilantro in lime juice, salted and peppered to taste. 2.- Taxtihuil (Shrimp Stew) This pre-Hispanic dish is originally from the Isla de Mexcaltitan. It’s a thick atole type corn-based stewed, fresh and dried shrimp, plus a mix of chile and spices, to which they add shrimp “meatballs” as a complement. Delicious! 1.Aguachile (No translation!) Even though there’s an actual dispute between Nayarit and Sinaloa as to who created this dish, truth is it’s a regional favorite that you can find all down the coast. The aguachile recipe is very simple: lime, green or serrano chile, garlic, salt and pepper. The sauce is poured over peeled shrimp, onion and cucumber. Then you wait a few minutes and then enjoy the spicy treat! Bonus: Tacos de Camarón (This one’s easy) Whether they’re wrapped in a flour or corn tortilla, au natural or breaded, shrimp tacos can be served every which way and they’re still great. Don’t forget to eat them with a side of mulata sauce, chipotle or cilantro dressing, with sliced cabbage and onion steeped in lime and habanero chiles, or just a simple salsa mexicana.

Introducing Francisco Partida MAXA Art Exhibit coming up February 14th at Galerias Vallarta By Marcia Blondin marciavallarta@gmail.com
O
n Valentine’s Day, Francisco Partida will be on hand to open his first art exhibit in Puerto Vallarta. For two weeks, every person entering Galerias Vallarta mall will pass by the artistic expressions of ten contemporary artists – painters and sculptors. Almost all the artists - and the art - comes from Guadalajara, where Francisco studied communications and film making at the University. Francisco has lived in Vallarta for two years now, enjoying our warmer climate and being able to play tennis outdoors almost daily when he is not painting. He is excited to exhibit his own artwork as well as pieces painted and sculpted by friends and
Personaje, 2012, by Jesús Villalpando colleagues. Francisco chose the busiest, most sophisticated shopping mall in town to present MAXA – a Huichol word for deer. Francisco has his eyes on politics having grown up with a Mayor and a State Governor in the family;
Jardín Laurel, 2013 by Francisco Partida he would certainly be an asset in Jalisco given his warmth and kind spirit. The ribbon-cutting will be at 7 pm, February 14, Galerias Vallarta – just inside the main entrance. See you there for Valentine’s Day. See page 24 for more details

Guests and Other Alien Visitors by Virginia Fox v@vcfox.net
Virginia Fox is a Writer, Performer, Producer and Storyteller. Her free flying fictional stories share a slice of life with a humorous twist. She is currently working on an anthology of her fondest memories, “Moon Lady’s Wild Rides.”
I
love having friends visit us in Puerto Vallarta and at other travel jewels Cal and l discover. Sharing our lives with others can be a perfect fit. Guests have such a great time, they can’t wait to return. Other times, the visit is a total misfit. The parade you thought would give them lasting memories, is “too ethnic.” The Mexican cuisine you crave, gives them heartburn. Your best friend from home becomes your worst nightmare. These are some of my favorite misfit tales. --------------------------------We’re out for dinner one night with Sam and Anna, a couple we’ve known for years. Sam comes from a small Iowa farm town with glowing global experiences visiting Navy ports. Determined to get his body back in shape for an upcoming hike with his grandson, Sam walks the Malecon every day, climbing the hills and rejoicing at his daily fitness app report. “Look at that guy over there,” he says directing us to a very guapo young man with muscled arms bulging out of gaping tanktop armholes. “He’s amazing!” Sam spontaneously jumps up from our table and goes over to the guy who looks like his body has been photoshopped. “I think your body is amazing,” I hear Sam say, “You must work out a lot. What do you do?” The buff guy’s body language expresses zero interest in this attractive grey haired man hitting on him. Sam quickly returns to our table. “What did he say?” Cal asks, suppressing his laughter. “He said, ‘I don’t do anything. It’s just natural.’ He didn’t want to talk.” Later that night we all have a good laugh welcoming Sam to a new world. --------------------------------Last month our dear friend, Alicia, and her husband visited us from Los Angeles. Time together is always harmonious providing we lovingly accommodate Alicia’s needs for the perfect mattress, perfect sound
levels, and perfect restaurant table. “I found this place that looks perfect,” she emails, referring to a condo they rented in El Posado for a week. A charming studio, beachfront views and a small balcony, it might suit their week’s getaway. The day after their arrival, Alicia is clearly pissed off. “I can’t believe what happened. I looked at the clock and it was 12:30 AM. The noise was so loud below us I couldn’t sleep. I put on my coat over my nightgown and went downstairs. I found the Manager and asked him to “turn down the music.” I’m sorry for Alicia, but I know the futility of her plea. “You were in your nightgown?” I envision partying Mexicans confronted by a Gringa in a nightie saying she was having trouble sleeping. “What did he say?” “He said he had a permit till 2 AM. They were having a staff posada. I won’t stay here again and I won’t eat at the restaurant.” She finds new places every year and the next year she was sure she’d found the perfect match in a luxury hill condo. “How’s it going? Good nights sleep?” I ask after her first night. “We love it, but there’s a rooster
nearby!” Close the doors and windows and put in your ear plugs,” I beg. “And don’t listen.” --------------------------------“If you want a real guest challenge, plan a destination wedding for your son,” confides Miranda. Wanting to give everyone a magical week of memories, Miranda rents a premier villa high in the hills. Five bedrooms, sweeping views, two swimming pools and a staff to attend to everyone’s whims. The bride, Marcella, arrives from New York like a royal princess with a matched set of Louis Vuitton suitcases and a daunting list of demands. “Our first meeting with the caterer went like a bad dress rehearsal,” says Miranda. “Marcella hates the color of the dinner table linens and wants the menu a mirror image of New York’s Tavern on the Green. She’s convinced her Vera Wang wedding dress will not be properly ironed. And she predicts she’ll lose her balance walking the terrace red carpet in stiletto shoes higher than the Church of Gualalupe.”
“We need to talk,” Miranda tells her future daughter-in-law sitting her down after two days. “Marcella slings her left leg over the chair, a clear indication she has no interest in what she might say. Her son asked to have a list of jobs for her to help. Her only desire was drinking chai tea he brought to her and batting her long fake eyelashes at him as he called her ‘sweet pea.’ Marcella complains, cries, and says our villa is up too high and we drink too much.” She was late making her regal wedding entrance with an adoring crowd and setting sun as her backdrop. “Lovely” Marcella commented the day after, smiling for the first time. Acceptance is one thing I shall try to do,” says Miranda. “Praying for my son is another.” --------------------------------“Come on down to Vallarta,” Helena and Patrick urge their Italian tennis friends, Gianna and Luca, believing they’ll never step foot in Mexico. “ We’ve got a contemporary villa with several bedrooms and a nearby club with tennis courts.” Four months later and Helena gets an email from Gianna. “We’re arriving on Saturday
the sixth and we’ll be with you for a week. They arrive with oversize suitcases and enough health and beauty products to last a month. “We know we can’t get anything we need in Mexico,” they say. Restaurant reservations are made at high rated Trip Advisor favorites with menus featuring food they’ll recognize and waiters who will understand their English. Helena hires a maid for the week ensuring quality breakfast, lunches, plus appetizers and drinks for Happy Hours. The normally good sport tennis matches are dominated by the couple’s volatility and mutual rage for each other. “You bitch, you missed the shot. We’ll lose.” “The soundtrack in the villa is not the crashing surf, or Flamenco music. It’s Luca and Gianna bickering day and night. One night after waiting an hour for them to show up at happy hour, Gianna appears by herself, obviously after an afternoon of umbrella drinks. “Where’s Luca?” we ask. “We’re going to be late for our VIP chef dinner.” “Oh, he fell and he’s resting,” says Gianna, inhaling her favorite martini. “He may have broken his back.” “What?” a shocked Patrick asks. “How did he do this? “”He fell off the balcony in front of our suite,” answers Gianna. “Let’s get him to the hospital,” Patrick urges. “Oh no, he’ll be fine,” says Gianna. “I don’t want to be late for dinner.” At 3AM, Gianna knocks on Patrick and Helena’s door. “I think we should take Luca to the hospital. He’s probably broken his back.” Luca is admitted with a broken back and stays overnight after getting fitted with a cast. The next morning Gianna doesn’t want to miss her tennis match. “Luca’s fine. We’ll pick him up later.” She plays a wickedly competitive game, then picks Luca up who’s been waiting two hours. “ Where can I get the best gel manicure?” Gianna asks Helena. They meet two mutual girlfriends at the nail salon and as they leave, one friend whispers to Helena: “We’re not surprised Luca fell over the balcony. He probably wanted to fly. Just another accident, most likely with alcohol involved!” --------------------------------We invite them, we entertain them, we share our magical lives, and as they leave, we often breathe a sigh of relief.

100% organic and locally grown
A
t Organic Love it’s possible to eat both the most delicious and exciting flavours and still feel confident that you are consuming 100% natural ingredients. In this little smoothie bar and organic kitchen with big ambitions, located in the quiet fishing village of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, owner Alef has made a promise to present a tasty, healthy and nutritional choice to anyone who ventures into the village. Alef is very pleased to offer an almost 100% organic and locally grown menu, from the flour in the
bread to the milk in the coffee, everything in her kitchen is organic. This newly opened restaurant offers breakfasts, lunch and dinner with ingredients based on vegetarian principles, with a range from ovo-lacto to pure vegan, all with a high level of ingenuity and without ever compromising flavour. Perhaps most well-known for their large variety of fresh drinks, smoothies, juices and homemade kombucha, as well as a variety of coffee drinks both hot and cold, they also serve a complete breakfast. Organic eggs from a ranch close by provides the all natural ingredient for their breakfast menu, or maybe you would prefer homemade toasted bread with organic cream cheese and marmalade or organic yogurt. A little later in the day they make sandwiches with a mix of pickled and fresh vegetables, another deli-
cious dish offered is a fusion of an Italian pesto and spirals of lightly fried zucchini. This dish is a favourite among the regulars because it’s a truly vegan alternative to eating a pasta. Three nights a week they offer a special dinner, four courses with seasonal ingredients. You will be treated to an appetizer, soup or a salad, the main plate and a dessert to finish the meal. And of course the most delicious food you have ever tasted because it has been loved and cared for since it was a seed in the ground. Look no further for something to satisfy your sweet tooth. There is an ever changing selection of desserts, cakes and cookies, oftentimes vegan and gluten-free or even sugar-free. Be sure to visit this charming new dining spot to learn even more about their efforts. Easy to find they are located in La Cruz just across from Philo’s Real Estate Office Delfín #14 in La Cruz or visit them at www.facebook.com/ OrganicFoodwithLove

Cat Morgan www.rivieranayaritfun.com Cat@RivieraNayaritFun.com Hey Everybody! Valentine’s Day is this Tuesday; a day for lovers and loved ones. The first Valentine’s Day associated with romance was back in jolly ole’ England during the 18th century when the tradition of courtly love flourished throughout the lands. Love was expressed with flowers and greeting cards. Remember creating Valentine’s Day cards in grade school? Throughout Europe, Saint Valentine’s keys were a romantic symbol given as an invitation to unlock the givers heart, and to children to ward off epilepsy, known back then as “Saint Valentine’s Malady”. The tradition carries on today with flowers, gifts, hearts and going out for a special romantic meal. There are certainly plenty of places to go for Valentine’s Day on the Banderas Bay and Riviera Nayarit. Choose your favorite place. Be sure to make a reservation as many restaurants and tours are getting booked up. As a reminder, Sonny Davis will be holding a FREE CONCERT at the La Cruz Marina Amphitheater on Valentine’s Day! If you enjoy going to Sunday Mass, the Catholic Church located in the Bucerias town square, “Nuestra Senora la Paz” has changed their schedule. The new schedule beginning February 12 is: 8:30 am Children, 10:00 am Readings in English, 12:00 Baptisms after Mass, 6:30 pm & 8:30 pm Mass. FUNRAISERS…. It’s always a WIN-WIN! nce again San Pancho will be hosting their 3-day Music Festival, now in its 17th year. The Festival will be held Friday, February 24 through Sunday, February 26 in San Pancho’s Plaza del Sol. As in recent years the Festival will feature regional, national and international artists on two alternating stages providing continuous entertainment. The event will begin at 5pm each day, with performances up until 11pm each night. Restaurants and food vendors will be operating at the event so attendees can dine and enjoy refreshments without missing any of the performances. Tables and chairs will be available for those that arrive early. However, festival seating has been customary over the years, so it is recommended that the public bring their own chairs or blankets. The festival began in 2001 in the backyard of a local resident, and has since grown into one of the most popular music events in the region featuring well over 25 groups and 100 musicians, that
cover the gamut of musical genres, and traditions each year. Along with the generous donations by attendees, the Music Festival is entirely supported by the gracious contributions of local musicians and international recording artists, and by the local residents of San Pancho who volunteer their time to help host this popular event. Donations are encouraged, but there is no intent for the Festival to profit from the performances. Tax deductible donations can be made online via the Chacala Cultural Foundation at: http://www.chacalaculturalfoundation.org. Additionally, proceeds from sales of music and video CD’s go directly to the performing artists. A schedule of performing artists and show times will be published on the website shortly before the beginning of the Festival. Living In La Cruz Cindy Bouchard
cindy@VillaAmordelMar.com
Explorer, Advocate and Editor: Madeline Milne
O
ur nine-month ‘sabbatical’ had my hubby and I enamored with all things Mexico… we were delighted to happen upon a most fabulous event at the trade and convention centre in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Booths bursting with Mexicana, flamenco music, girls in colourful traditional dress and happy informative speakers; all sharing about why vacationing, investing or living in Mexico need not be a dream! Having recently invested in and committed to living in Mexico we were delighted to know people presenting there. We had to know who was behind this marvelous event called Mexi-Go! We learned it was Madeline Milne. I had to share, beyond the editorial, this amazing woman who so generously champions all that we love of Vallarta-Nayarit and who also decided to make it home. A rare opportunity to reimagine her life presented itself and Madeline took it! Moving to Mexico in 2011, first in Bucerias, a brief stint in Ajijic and then making Puerto Vallarta her home ever since. Why here? “Vallarta is a great mix of modern and traditional Mexico with an expat experienced public service sector. It’s close enough to Vancouver, Canada for quick flights home and offers easy access to explore the rest of Mexico. The mountains and the bay are similar to what I left in Vancouver and it feels comfortable.” Before Mexico, Madeline had a nice house in a good neighbourhood and a fancy job title. She traveled regularly and wanted for little, but she worked all the time and when wasn’t working was ‘stuck in traffic’. As often in a North American home, her son was in daycare more than he was at home. Madeline told me, “I thought Mexico would bring more personal freedoms, and in many ways it has.” Her son has become fluent in Spanish and has a broader understanding of the world. “He
went through some challenges and came out on the other side stronger for them. (He might disagree in this moment but I think in the future he will be appreciative of the opportunities.)” Her role as Editor of the Vallarta Tribune happened by total fluke in March 2013. “I was getting my nails done and picked up a copy of the Tribune. It was atrocious. Clearly they were taking Spanish articles and using Google Translate to publish them in English. Nothing made sense. A friend mentioned they were looking for a new editor and I called the next day… I was hired on the spot and was basically handed the newspaper with nothing more than a handshake and a ‘Good Luck!’” Madeline oversees the content of the newspaper. She appreciates being informed and involved in local and national events and learning something new each week. “The best is when I get wonderful emails from readers and advertisers thanking me for the Tribune and what it has brought them. The readership of the Tribune is a mix of snowbirds, expats and tourists. We’re in all the major markets from Mismaloya to Sayulita and since we reach a broad range of people I think it’s important to have more than just what’s happening in Old Town.” Madeline shares her goals for the newspaper: “I want to make the paper more inclusive for all the communities we have in Vallarta-Nayarit. We offer positive, intelligent information about Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit and Mexico. I think it’s important for those who visit to have a better understanding of Mexico and all it offers. I try to educate people through story. This country inspires me. It has so many edges and smooth parts. It’s colourful and bold and noisy. It’s also diverse and has this incredible depth of history and culture. The natural beauty and the creative beauty I see here, everyday, inspires me.” In her down time Madeline explores the countryside. She points her car in any direction but west and goes for a couple hours
until she finds a new paradise on earth. “There are so many great places to explore just a few hours from the city.” There’s not many places she hasn’t been to and she has tons of experience traveling the back roads. Feel free to ask her for advice on your next road trip. Everyone knows Mexico is famous for its food. In the bay, seafood reigns king and Bucerias is the place to go for the freshest catch of the day. When guest are in town, Lagostinas on Playa Los Muertos has consistently good food and that million-dollar view. She also recommends, “Joe Jack’s Fish Shack has the best mojito’s and is great for groups; Los Alcatraces by Costco has excellent Mexican breakfasts; Yeo for sushi; Los Patrones in Pitillal for the world’s biggest quesadillas, and an abuela close to her house makes the most delicious birria; perfect for hangovers,” she confides. Many expats come to Mexico and focus on charity work. Madeline has no one favourite cause but she does have a parade of rescue dogs (and the occasional kitten) through her doors. “Until recently I found myself too busy to commit to something regularly so I support a number of charities. RISE and Corazon de Niña are worthy organizations; the PVSPCA and PEACEAnimal Clinic have done amazing work in recent years to alleviate animal suffering. Pasitos de Luz and the new Casa Connor need all the help we can give. IFC helps the community both Mexican and Expat in so many ways.” Development and change are touchy subjects to those of us who love ‘authentic’ Mexico. What changes has Madeline seen in her
years in Mexico, “The number of people who are traveling to Vallarta-Nayarit is the biggest change. When I arrived the country was still suffering from the effects of the US recession, swine flu and bad press. People and businesses were hurting. Now we’ve seen tourism practically double and the area is thriving. It’s been an inspiring change to witness. And a lot of kudos has to go to the efforts of the Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit tourism boards in changing people’s perceptions. ” As always, I ask if you had a magic wand, what would your wish be for Vallarta five years from now and beyond? “I hope that Vallarta and the area can find some balance between unbridled growth and sliding backwards. It would be my wish that the natural beauty of this area is better protected and that infrastructure is improved to benefit all who call this area home.” Why vacation here? “It has something for everyone. You can do nothing, lie by the pool and
sip margaritas or you can get as adventurous as you’d like. Adventures include dining, shopping, playing on the water, in the mountains and in all the little towns, each offering something unique.” Why move here? “Aside from the great weather and affordable prices, the path has been laid. Moving to the PV area in particular is fairly straightforward because so many have paved the way. The government and service industry understand the needs of the expat community. Anything you need is found here. And it’s a great jumping off point for exploring the rest of Latin America, as well as traveling back to the US or Canada.” On your journeys around town, promise me, if you see Madeline, give her a great big thank you for all she does for so many!

The American Automobile Association (AAA) announced the winners of the AAA Diamonds Awards on January 27, 2017. These awards are considered the most important of their kind in North America with respect to luxury service and high standard levels for tourism-related establishments. “It’s vital for the Riviera Nayarit to maintain its gains within the AAA program,” said Marc Murphy, Managing Director of the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It’s also impressive that we’ve been able to increase the number of awards every year. Congratulations to the winning hotels and restaurants and thank you for enriching our destination!” In 2017, the Riviera Nayarit kept the awards for its 15 hotels and increased the number of restaurants to seven. This year’s news is the inclusion of Grupo Vidanta’s Azur Bistro Restaurant, making for a grand total of 22 hotels and restaurants with AAA Four or Five Diamond awards in the destination.

hat was certainly an exciting Super Bowl Sunday with a nerve-wracking come from behind victory for the New England Patriots. We are happy to report that Tescalama was completely booked by the Friday before Super Bowl Sunday. Nonetheless we were able to accommodate all the last minute walk-ins and a great time was had by all. The New England fans celebrated and the Atlanta fans drowned their sorrows. As we say here at Tescalama, “Win or lose, have some booze!” It was also unanimous, all agreed that with the great TVs, the ocean views, the open air, the gentle breeze and the great food and drink, Tescalama is the place to watch sports or just have a drink and a meal. Lost in the Superbowl weekend, the 2017 PGA tour kicked off in Phoenix. This weekend we have the Pebble Beach Pro Am. Always good for some great golf and good laughs. For the golfers play a round then come on by and have a round! For the surfers, we streamed the Volcom Pipe Pro. Amazing performances in heavy waves as viewed in hi-def on big screen TVs! role himself. He was finally offered $350,000 for the script rights by a studio, but they had their own casting ideas for the lead role, including Robert Redford and Burt Reynolds. Sylvester refused to sell unless he played the lead role and eventually, after a substantial budget cut to compromise, it was agreed he could be the star. “Rocky” (1976) would go on to be nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay. The film went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture, Best Directing and Best Film Editing. Sylvester then made his directorial debut and starred in the 1978 film “Paradise Alley”, a family drama in which he played one of three brothers who enter the world of wrestling. In 1979 Sylvester wrote, directed and starred in his first sequel, “Rocky II” which would go on to be a box office hit making $200 million. He continued his box office success with Rocky and wrote, directed, and starred in two more sequels to the
series: Rocky III (1982) and Rocky IV (1985). In 1981 Sylvester also starred alongside Michael Caine in “Escape to Victory”, a sports drama in which he plays a prisoner of war involved in a Nazi propaganda soccer game. Then in 1982, Sylvester found his second major franchise success, starring as Vietnam vet John Rambo, in the action-war film “First Blood” (1982). The first Rambo was both a critical and box office success. Three sequels, “Rambo: First Blood Part II” (1985), “Rambo III” (1988) and “Rambo” (2008), would be solid box office gold. 1990 saw the fifth installment of the Rocky franchise, “Rocky V”. This film was considered a box office disappointment. After making a couple of disastrous comedy films “Oscar” (1991) and “Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot” (1992), Sylvester got back to the action scene with the hit “Cliffhanger” (1993). Also in 1993, Sylvester co-starred with Wesley Snipes in the futu-
ristic action film “Demolition Man”, which earned over$158 million worldwide. His string of hits continued with 1994’s “The Specialist” with over $170 million worldwide. Sylvester then appeared in the thriller “Assassins” (1995) with Julianne Moore and Antonio Banderas. Then after a string of flops and taking a three year break, Sylvester made a comeback in 2006 with the sixth Rocky “Rocky Balboa”, which was a critical and commercial hit. Not until 2010 would Sylvester have another hit with “The Expendables”. He wrote, directed and starred in the movie and costarred fellow action stars Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Eric Roberts, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and cameos by fellow ‘80s action icons Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. In 2012, “The Expendables 2” would again be a hit with the addition of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris to the cast. “The Expendables 3” was released in 2014. The returning cast also added Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford. In 2013, Sylvester starred in the action thriller “Escape Plan”, along with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Robert De Niro. In 2015, Sylvester again brought us his role of Rocky Balboa in a spin-off-sequel film, “Creed”, which focused on the son of his deceased friend/rival, Apollo Creed. The film, received critical acclaim for portraying the iconic boxer for the seventh time and brought him his third Oscar nomination, this time for Best Supporting Actor. While Sylvester Stallone has never been a fan of mainstream film critics nor the Hollywood movie purists, he has always managed to entertain us and always gave us value for the price of admission. Sylvester Stallone Action Actor By Fred Jac0bs
M
ichael Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone was born on July 6, 1946 in the Hell’s Kitchen area of New York City. His father was Frank Stallone Sr, a hairdresser and his mother is Jackie Stallone, who has rode Sylvester’s’ coat tails and was a wrestling promoter and more recently became a reality TV celebrity. Jackie had complications during labor and as a result, the doctor was forced to use two pairs of forceps during his birth. The misuse of these accidentally severed a nerve and caused paralysis in parts of Sylvester’s face. As a result, the lower left side of his face is paralyzed including parts of his lip, tongue, and chin. The accident resulted in Sylvester’s trademark snarling look and slightly slurred speech. His father moved the family to Washington, D.C. in the early 1950s, where he opened a beauty school, while Jackie opened a women’s gymnasium called Barbella’s. Sylvester’s parents divorced when he was nine and he lived with his mother. When Sylvester was sixteen, he was getting very bad grades in school, so his father got him a summer job at his beauty salon as punishment. Sylvester would later be sent to Philadelphia to go to Charlotte Hall Military Academy, in hopes of disciplining him. This seemed to work and Sylvester would eventually get into the University of Miami. While there, Sylvester became inte-
rested in acting. After University, he headed back to his native New York City to pursue a career in acting. Sylvester quickly found out what a hard world acting was to get started into. In a state of desperation after being evicted from his apartment and sleeping for three weeks in the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City, Sylvester answered a casting call for a softporn film called “The Party at Kitty and Stud’s” (1970) (aka “The Italian Stallion”). He was paid $200 dollars for the two days’ work. Between 1969 and 1975, Sylvester only managed to land small bit parts. In March of 1975, Sylvester saw the Muhammad Ali/ Chuck Wepner fight and Sylvester decided to take his fate into his own hands. He went home after watching the fight, and after 20 straight hours, he had written the script for what would become his big break. Sylvester then attempted to sell the script to multiple studios, with the intention of playing the lead

Future Event? Have you got a wedding anniversary coming up or a big birthday? Why not rent a gorgeous, multi-roomed house overlooking the bay where you can watch the sun sink into the ocean with your family and friends. Split between a few families, the cost can beat hotels and resorts. To check out what it could be like, take an IFC Home Tour. The tours visit four fabulous homes and, while some are not for rent, others may be. In any event you get to see interesting houses in different parts of Puerto Vallarta and you have our knowledgeable docents to answer your questions on living in Vallarta, the properties that you’ll be walking around and, if required, the meaning
of life. Kidding! Tours leave the Sea Monkey Restaurant, which is on the beach at Aquiles Serdan at 10:30 on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and last about three hours. Seats on the comfortable, air-conditioned buses go fast so it’s best to buy your tickets ($600 pesos) online at www.ifctoursforvallarta. com or at the IFC office, which is on Insurgentes above the HSBC bank, a few days before you want to go. Tours last about three hours and require the ability to walk on cobbled streets and to climb quite a few stairs so make sure you wear appropriate shoes. All of the profits from the Home Tours are used by the International Friendship Club (IFC) to pay for its cleft palate program for local children and to support 20 charities here in Puerto Vallarta.
Happy Hour and can sometimes serve as many as 60 or 70 people in that time. Fred is the guy who replenishes the bar stocks and that’s enough work for one person but he also looks after the facilities in the clubhouse which means making sure it is secure, that the A/C is working and that there is enough toilet paper in the bathrooms. Other people volunteer to plan special events and lectures, arrange the Friday evening dine-around, instruct meditation, yoga and contemplative dialogue. Adriana, our phenomenal Spanish teacher, provides Spanish classes for four sessions each morning, three days a week. And how is the money spent? Much of it goes for travel and accommodation for the physicians and nurses from Guadalajara who donate their time four times a year. April arranges all the logistics but other volunteers look after the families when they bring their children to the clinics. CMQ hospital donates
its operating space. IFC has two committees of about 8 people each who vet the charities that ask for support. The committee members assess their needs, visit their facilities and recommend to their committee whether or not to start or continue the club’s help. A one-woman band, Susan, has for many years travelled the dusty, dirt roads of PV and provided beans, lentils and other very basic supplies to families in need. T.J. is the club’s webmaster in charge of all things digital, Rod ‘s work as treasurer is vital and Henry, the President keeps all these balls in the air. What a great job by one and all! These people are happily providing service to others because they realise the truth in Helen Keller’s statement that “The unselfish effort to bring cheer to others will be the beginning of a happier life for ourselves.”
The Rent You Pay By John Warren
M
uhammad Ali, that revered American Muslim, said, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.” When you understand how many volunteers give their time in service to others while living here in Puerto Vallarta it’s an eye-opener. There are thousands of them, because there are so many charities organizations doing so much for so many. Take the International Friendship Club (IFC) as an example. Members of this club has been helping Mexicans of Puerto Vallarta since 1986 and continue to make a significant contribution to the medical, educational, cultural and social services needs of the community today. The club will distribute in excess of $1,000,000 pesos this year. This money will be raised by the sale of tickets to the IFC Home Tours, the sale of membership fees ($350 pesos/person) and charging for classes and social events. It will be spent on providing free surgical services to children with cleft palates, free dental services to kids living in small villages in the jungle and along the coast and on giving free English lessons to Mexicans ranging from age 9 to age 60. The balance will be distributed to about 20 charities, including orphanages, the library, schools in need of supplies and teachers as well as cultural activities for children. The club does all this with the help of its
dedicated office manager, Josué, its only paid employee but all the rest of the work is done by an army of volunteers. The IFC Home Tours (see separate article) provides the bulk of IFC’s income and needs a large team of people to do so. Ann contacts homeowners to allow their homes to be tramped through by hordes of visitors and those homeowners open their homes to IFC because they believe in giving back to the community. Hank and Conrad marshal a small army of volunteers to greet their customers, attach nametags to shirts, take the money, negotiate the bus contract and serve as docents on the buses to make the tours a memorable experience for everyone. Volunteers “man” the front desk in the office from Monday to Friday between 9:00 and 1:30 to answer visitors questions, to sell tickets for the Home Tours and to sell memberships. IFC gets other income from the social activities and lectures that it arranges, so someone has to run the bridge class on Monday mornings and to arrange the tables, chairs and decks of cards for Friday afternoon’s social bridge. Another member picks a theme for the Monday night Movie Night and then finds the movies, puts out the chairs, makes sure the audio/visual equipment is working and collects the admission charge. Fred, Doug, Mike and others tend bar on Fridays between 5:00 and 6:00 for the club’s

scar and Veronica have been involved in “farmer’s” Markets since they started at the Paradise Community Center a few years ago here in Vallarta. Both Veronica and Oscar are from Oaxaca where their respective families spend their days weaving and creating clothing and home accessories that are full of colour and textures that define that state in Mexico. Both of them are so friendly and welcoming, their English perfect and gracious. Find them at the Marsol Market and learn about the patterns and styles that make Oaxacan textiles so unique. Against the back wall of the Marsol Market you will find Julio – a master craftsman of all things leather. Belts and handbags, coin purses and wallets. Even handmade shoes! One of Vallarta’s finest jewellery designers is Mathias Brustle. His displays are as stunning as his finished pieces. Speak to Matias about your ideas and he will work with you to create a unique piece
of jewellery you will treasure for a lifetime. If you come early enough, you will see Martha, tray held high over her head with glasses of freshly-squeezed orange juice. When
her gigantic bag of oranges is finished so is her work day. The Marsol Friday Market by the Pier is open from 9:30 to 1:30 pm. Photo: Mathias Brustle, one of Vallarta’s finest jewellery designers
