TIME ZONE: The entire state of Jalisco is on Central Time, as is the southern part of the State of Nayarit starting from San Blas in the north. BUSES: A system of urban buses with different routes can bring you from one end of the bay to the other and all the spots in between. If you’re going further than San Pancho, head to the main bus terminal to catch a ‘Pacifico’ bus. Current fare is 10.00 pesos. TAXIS: There are set rates within defined zones of town. Do not enter a taxi without agreeing on the price with the driver first. Make a note of the taxi number in case you leave something behind. Drivers typically do not carry change.

UBER: New in 2017 to Puerto Vallarta, Uber is still experiencing some growing pains particularly in the state of Nayarit. Uber is about 25-50% cheaper than a taxi, but this is subject to change. The benefits of using Uber are set fares and the ability to follow up directly with your driver if there is an incident or you leave an item behind. MONEY EXCHANGE: Typically a bank will give you a higher rate of exchange than the exchange booths (Caja de Cambio). You will need your passport. Better yet, use your bank card to withdraw funds from any ATM. Note that ATM’s in the banks are the safest to use and charge lower fees. DRINKING WATER: While Puerto Vallarta’s water has been awarded a certification of purity for the past two decades, the quality

of the water tested at the source varies greatly from what comes out of the tap at the other end. So do be careful. If you want to be doubly sure, you can pick up bottled water just about anywhere. EXPORTING PETS: Falling in love with the street dog outside your hotel is easy to do and it’s also easy to bring them home with you too. The process is inexpensive and only takes a day or two. You need a certificate of health from a local vet among other things. For the most up-to-date information contact the Puerto Vallarta SPCA at spcapv@ gmail.com. COMMON SENSE: Just as you wouldn’t walk around your hometown drunk and belligerent, it is not acceptable to do that here. While Mexico is a tolerant culture, basic politeness is appreciated. Don’t pee in the streets. Don’t flash your money or expensive gadgets. Pay attention to your surroundings. Know where you are going. Pay your bills (and don’t forget to tip). And have fun! DRINKING AND DRIVING: First off – just don’t. The consequences are not worth it. Taxis or Ubers are cheap and plentiful. Fines are as much as 12,000 pesos. You can be taken to jail and your vehicle impounded. There are many checkstops on the weekends, and you will be asked to blow if they suspect you have been drinking. LEGAL SYSTEM: Not knowing the law is not a valid excuse in Mexico, or anywhere. If you find yourself caught in a legal situation be aware that guilt is presumed until your innocence can be proven. This is a very difficult lesson to learn if you are visiting from the United States or Canada. Immediately contact your consulate for assistance.

CALLING IN MEXICO Calling phones in Mexico can be tricky. There are different codes you need to use depending if you are calling landlines or cellular phones and if they are local or long distance. LONG-DISTANCE CALLS FROM WITHIN MEXICO For national long-distance calls (within Mexico) the code is 01 plus the area code and phone number. For international long-distance calls, first dial 00, then the country code (U.S. and Canada country code is 1), so you would dial 00 + 1 + area code + 7 digit number. CALLING CELL PHONES (FROM A LAND LINE) If you are calling from a landline within the area code of the Mexican cell phone number dial 044, the 10 digit number. Outside of the area code (but still within Mexico) dial 045 and then the 10 digit phone number. Cell phone to cell phone only requires the 10 digit number. CALLING TOLL-FREE NUMBERS Some toll free numbers work from Mexico to the US and Canada, but many do not. Those that do work are often not toll-free. You need to dial a different prefix. Holiday season kicks off with Peregrinations

s we slide into December, you are in for a treat. Starting on December 1st, you can experience one of the great Mexican traditions – The Virgin of Guadalupe Peregrinations. Every evening from about 5pm until 10pm or later from December 1 through to the 12th, the city of Vallarta participates in this pilgrimage. Starting from in front of Woolworths on Calle Juarez and walking to the church of the Virgin of Guadalupe, groups of people from businesses, associations, schools and families walk, sing and dance to the church where the bells tolls for each (that’s a lot of tolling) and they are then blessed by the priest. Those not participating will line the street to watch the festivities and enjoy the excellent street food that comes out during this 12 -day event. The closer we get to December 12th, the virgin’s anniversary, the more people participate and the later the events carry on. If you live in the area, please be aware that it can be very noisy and you should take care of your pets.

Please ensure they wear, at the very least, a collar with a working phone number. Each year dozens of animals are scared by the noises and run away. If you’re looking for something a little quieter, this week El Rio BBQ is trying something new including launching their first wine list after 7 years. Local wine expert Nina Goodhope of Cork+Bottle is hosting a wine tasting on December 9. More details on this week’s map. The Festival Gourmet events are happening around the bay. There is a Chocolate and Wine event and a Wine and Fine Cheese event – both of which sound divine. I’m heading to Punta Mita for four days of luxury pampering, gourmet meals, and relaxation but if I weren’t, I would hit the Southside Shuffle along Basilio Badillo on Friday evening and support some of the great shops in that area. Kimberly MacDaniel’s Eccentrica is carrying a line of the most beautiful Mexican designed clothing, Chantel has tons of new designs in her silver jewelry shop,

and Erica Maree opened a second location on Basilio Badillo. Really, it’s all your Christmas shopping in one spot. U.N. reaffirms refugees’ right to seek asylum in U.S. GENEVA (Reuters) - Asylum seekers at the Mexican border fleeing violence or persecution are entitled to lodge claims in the United States to obtain sanctuary there, U.N. agencies said in a fresh attempt to shield migrants from tough U.S. immigration policies. United Nations officials have repeatedly urged Washington to ensure asylum seekers are protected, but U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday Mexico should send migrants seeking asylum in the United States back to their home countries. Some 3,500 migrants from the caravans have applied for asylum in Mexico, said UNHCR spokesman Babar Baloch.

U.S. authorities fired tear gas canisters toward migrants in Mexico - near the border crossing separating Tijuana from San Diego, California - on Sunday when some rushed through border fencing into the United States. Mexico’s foreign ministry presented a diplomatic note to the U.S. government on Monday calling for a “full investigation”. After Trump signed an order limiting asylum rights earlier this month, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said the United States must make sure anyone fleeing violence or persecution can get protection “without obstruction”. UNHCR spokesman Babar Baloch, asked on Tuesday about U.S. forces firing tear gas at migrants, told a Geneva news

briefing: “We are following those reports with concern, we are still trying to understand what transpired there.” Border management is “a sovereign prerogative of national governments”, but border security and international protection for refugees are not mutually exclusive, he said. “It means that any person whose life is at risk in their country of origin must be able to access territory and request asylum in a safe country. And each asylum request should be considered individually. “We have been repeating our call on the U.S. authorities to grant access to the territory and to asylum procedure to those who are fleeing persecution and violence,” he said. Sunday’s incident was the latest

chapter in a saga that has pitted Trump’s hardline immigration policies against thousands of migrants who have made their way north through Mexico from violent and impoverished Central American countries. Seven migrants have died in incidents along the way, Joel Millman of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said.

“We believe governments have the right to defend their borders and should do so responsibly,” he said. “We also think migrants certainly should have the expectation that there be an access that is legal and safe for them to at least seek to cross a border.” Reporting by Stephanie Nebehay, Editing by William Maclean

Mexico, Canada discuss signing of new North American trade deal MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke on Friday by phone about the Nov. 30 signing at a G20 summit of a new trade deal between Mexico, Canada and the United States, Pena Nieto’s office said in a statement.

Afterwards, the accord would be sent to the legislatures of the three countries, the statement added, without saying which officials would sign the deal known as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Pena Nieto is expected to attend the summit in Buenos Aires. Nov. 30 is his last day in office.

t seems like ages have passed since my sister Patrice and I left Guadalajara; we certainly hit the ground running on our return to Vallarta mere days ago. Up and coming news first then a re-hash of the week! We are going this weekend, December 1st, to see ‘La Posada.’ Written and directed by the amazingly talented Juan Pablo Hernandez. It is being presented at Plataforma 322 in Versalles. I have never had the pleasure of seeing this cultural center so am looking forward to reviewing a new space for the performing arts. The play is in Spanish, is a comedy, and contains ‘surprises.’ Join me on Saturday, the 1st at Lucerna 153, at 8 pm. ‘La Posada’ will be performed December 8th again. Full report next week. Next up is the fabulous Frida and Diego dress-up party-of-theyear at Casa Yvonneka, December 15th. Tickets are few and will sell out fast – contact Matthias.pv@ gmail.com for yours. Last year’s event featured gigantic shrimp and the tenderest roast beef I have had in years. The dress-up part is optional, of course, but added a great deal to the fun. The most important part of this fundraiser is to have money to continue to care for stray dogs and kitties on Vallarta’s streets. Every Thursday, Gary Thompson of Galeria Pacifico conducts a free Sunset Malecon Sculpture Tour that ends with cocktails at Demetro Galeria on Lazaro Cardenas. Join us for wine around 7 pm, and view the gallery just beginning its second season. There’s great new art to be seen, many of the artists are in attendance, including me. So drop by, say hi, get some hugs and enjoy the evening! A chance stop at the ‘Wild, Hungry Cougar’ for a superfast bite to eat, turned out to be so delicious, Patrice and I went back to the Olas Altas upstairs-eatery for Thanksgiving dinner. THAT was so good we took home two more meals to go.

As with all great food, the turkey feast was even better the next day. Thanks, Adriana and your excellent staff. Over lunch at Salud Superfood, voted best ‘Vegan-Friendly Restaurant’ in last season’s Best of Banderas Bay People’s Choice Awards, I talked for hours with Alex Bourgeau, co-manager of the Palm Cabaret. The changes in that venue on Olas Altas are wonderful!! Remember the damn columns that were there? Gone. Lovely, elegant upholstered chairs line up beautifully in front of the stage that appears to have tripled in size without taking any floor space away from the audience. The inside and the outside have been streamlined and are infinitely more inviting and comfortable. Part of the lineup this season was presented on Opening Night to a packed house. It was great to see and hear my neighbor, friend, and Vallarta Diva, Kim Kuzma again. She has a new band, new songs and the same quick wit and glorious voice as always. Kevin, Canada’s darling, aka Miss Conception, emceed the show. Kevin is doing a Christmas show for the first time in Vallarta. He is inventive always, funny as hell and has

talent to burn. I plan on seeing him this coming week. During opening night, a spontaneous and raucous standing ovation occurred for Jimmy James whose brilliant voice imitations reminded me immediately of Michael Walters who will be at the Palm next month! I can never say enough good things about Michael Walters and his delightfully bitchy Dame Edna. To Piel Canela, Jesse Lutrell, Bohemia Viva, and Nate on the keys, knock ‘em dead and enjoy your brand new surroundings. The S.P.C.A.’s annual event was held this year at Casa Kimberley. I was so pleased to join my editor, Madeline Milne for the evening in what is easily the most elegant property in Vallarta. Even though I live less than two blocks away from Casa Kimberley, I have not been inside the house for more than two decades. It is considerably changed and so luxurious and opulent, I think Elizabeth Taylor would adore it. Everyone attending last Saturday night certainly did. Magically lovely, impeccable service, food; everything perfect right down to the dozens of roses on every table. Thank you, Ms. Chatterton, for having me over for dinner and mariachi – it was splendid. Season is ramping up, so I am thinking about resurrecting an old column called “Comings and Goings” that deals strictly with my take on the fab entertainment in town. Five Steps to a Balanced Life

ho knew a balanced life is a sole secret to happiness? Let me share some of my insights into this secret that I have recently discovered. I was anticipating my 50 birthday with such excitement, convincing myself that life was perfect, the party was being planned, the summer vacation floating around in my head. That was about to shift unexpectedly and what I did not know was that life had decided to give me a few unexpected gifts. These gifts made me stop in my tracks, go deeper and look within. Only when I began to look inward, I began to walk down the path of self-discovery, an unexpected journey for me. I hope my sharing with you will enhance the happiness within your life. Numero Uno: Your health. When you are moving and shaking all the time, something has to give, that is a guarantee. You must shift the gears of your life down to enjoy the journey. I likened my life to a car that was placed in park with the accelerator pressed to the mat, revved and ready to go, at all times. This is exhausting, it is essential that we slow it down, put it into park, get out of the car, go sit your butt in the sand, breathe, get present and rest. Numero Dos: Are your ducks in order? Do you know your own affairs, are you in the driver’s seat of your own life? Can someone or something pull the rug out from under you? Could that cause a tsunami in your life? If so change things up pronto! You MUST be

plugged into your own life, relying solely on someone else is a sure disaster for an unexpected moment. Knowledge is power. Get hold of the day to day operations of your life. It is a big fat deal! Numero Tres: Do you know who you are? Do you really get what makes you tick, are you being your authentic self, walking your own journey? Are you a chronic people pleaser? What is not nice is when you are not kind to yourself and putting yourself on the back burner. Get quiet, listen deeply, some of your beautiful truths will just start flowing out of you. Being authentic is the new sexy and you wear it well. Numero Cuatro: Do you like where you live? Have you made your home your sanctuary? Have you discovered enough of the world to really get that you are in your right and perfect place? Find your sweet spot where you park your life, it makes everything fall into place. Numero Cinco: Your tribe. This is a biggie, I think and talk about this a lot. It’s when the rubber hits the road that you really get this one. Your tribe is the ones who circle around you when things go South. They are your lifeline when you can’t quite breathe on your own. This is huge, dig deep and look at this one. Grab onto your life, hold on tight, make sure the ride is worth taking and get real, be present and enjoy your glorious journey, you deserve this and so much more. Homework: Do you know where all your vital documents are that have a direct impact in your life? Do you have a will? Get this done this week.

Touring the Town in Puerto Vallarta By Bobbi Dempsey

t can be said that Puerto Vallarta is the ultimate getaway destination, offering just about anything you could want in a dream vacation. That’s because it has something for almost everyone. Of course, it is most well known as a beach location, and certainly the spectacular views are a highlight and the gorgeous beach landscapes are a major draw. For those who want to just soak up some rays in a tropical environment, this city can definitely fulfill that requirement. But there is so much more to discover and enjoy in this iconic town. Best of all, many of the best attractions here are free! In fact, there are quite a few exciting things to do and see all over town in Puerto Vallarta. The Malecon Seems like most popular beach towns have a boardwalk, and Puerto Vallarta is no exception. You can stroll along El Malecon just to people-watch or take in the local scene (and scenery). But this is also a great place for shopping, with boutiques, galleries, vendors and open air markets. It is also a terrific vantage point from which to view the city lights and the colorful sunsets. And after midnight you can get your dance party fix! For something different, you can find the Museo Naval on the Maelcon. Considered a must-see for history buffs or anyone who loves learning about things related to maritime travel or naval milestones, it also boasts a wonderful restaurant for breakfast. Nature Head south and surround yourself with the beauty of nature at the Vallarta Botanical Gardens, where you can stroll among a wide range of vibrant flowers and lush greenery. Depending on the time of year when you visit, you can

think one of the most common requests I receive these days is for Botox for the reduction of facial wrinkles. Of course, Botox is used for other things too, from migraines to excessive sweating to some allergies. We really do not have anyone here that specializes in Botox for other than cosmetic purposes. For dermatological purposes, there are many highly qualified and experienced physicians in the area including dermatologists and plastic surgeons. One can choose to go to whoever they want to but be sure and do some

homework. Beauty shops, spas, even some dental offices are now on the Botox bandwagon so ‘buyer beware’. Administered by an unqualified person could leave you looking a bit strange. Do you really want to look permanently surprised? Oftentimes people are not too happy with the price of Botox here and for some reason, believe that it is ‘cheaper to get it here’. Weight Loss and Wellness

f you have been on a weight loss program and have reached a plateau; even though you’re doing your best to eat like a rabbit, steering away from the burger and cheap taco routines and great with regular workout routines, there could be simply explanations with easy solutions to get you back on track. Here are practices and information may that help you to achieve your weight loss goals with health and wellness in mind. We tend to want something NOW, instead of looking at our goals over longer periods of time. Losing weight slowly over a period of time rather than 15 pounds a month using a “crash diet” is a healthy weight loss program ensuring a successful way to keep you weight off. When your body goes without food, (especially first thing in the morning) it triggers a sense in your body that your starving yourself and will naturally do its best to store your fat. Also, when your body senses this famine, after the crash diet your body will try to regain the weight back. When you lose weight slowly, perhaps a pound a week, that adds to 56 pounds in a year. DRINK WATER! I suggest drinking water to my clients almost more than any other suggestion. Our bodies need water for many reasons, and losing weight is one of them. “You can’t burn fat if your body is dehydrated” states

You need to be drinking more than 48 ounces of fluid per day. If you notice your stool is hard, or that you’re constipated, then your body is telling you loud and clear that you are dehydrated.” Personally, it’s much easier for me to lose weight when I focus on drinking a lot of water. Hydrated muscles work better. I experience less muscle cramping. Drink a lot of water for your health and wellness! EATING HEALTHY; One word: Commitment. Why is it so difficult to stay committed to eating healthy? Many of us have created eating and drinking patterns that do not align with a healthy lifestyle. It is easier to trade the concept of a short lived diet to one of a healthy lifestyle change. Holding thoughts of, “Just until the wedding” or “after the New Year’s party” doesn’t work well. We create neural pathway patterns for what we believe tastes good (like bacon and eggs in the morning), and changing these neural brain patterns is possible by making that breakfast change to a smoothie or another health choice. Your mind will resist for a short time, because the mind only knows what you have told it. (The mind only knows what it knows, and not what it does not know.) The rational mind will go to the old pattern: Oh,

having bacon and eggs today won’t hurt you. Just for today; you have been good all week. Continuing to tell your mind that the “smoothie” is delicious and healthy and that you LOVE it, the mind will believe you (because you keep telling it) and a new neural pathway will be created to support a new routine. (About 21-30 days on average.) GYM ROUTINES Have your workouts stopped working out for you? Weight loss plateaus are common as your muscles get use to repetition. Try switching up your workout routines by adding different training such as high-intensity interval training or a new class once a week. If you’re eating patterns are not in alignment with health you may not experience the weight loss you desire. Working out does not mean you can eat more when you’re trying to lose weight. Think of your weight maintenance 75-80 % nutrition and 25% physical exercise. Keep track of how much you’re eating. It’s easy to snack throughout the day and loose track. Those little snacks add up. ALCOHOL You’re on vacation, or perhaps living here as an Expat for several months. It’s easy to get into the swing of drinking daily. While drinking daily may cause long term health problems as well as issues in your life, you certainly do not have to have a “drinking problem” for alcohol to be holding you back from your weight loss goals. Alcohol can pack on a lot of empty calories. One glass of wine: 150-200 calories. Beers: 100-300 calories a beer. Alcohol also can increase your appetite and lead to lots of snacking. Vitamin deficiencies like vitamin D, Iron, B12 and Magnesium, inadequate sleep or a sluggish thyroid (slow metabolism) or low estrogen levels may also be a factor. If you can live in Vallarta without appreciating some of the good eatin’ around here, you have to be at least half Vulcan.

Surprised Pride

he other day, my son got on stage with one of his buddies and sang “Creep” for the high school talent show. He practiced at home a lot before hand. When I say “a lot”, I mean that every member of the family now knows the lyrics better than Radiohead. Guys, it wasn’t perfect, but it was pretty great. Not only because he has a good voice with a really decent sense of pitch, but because that child stood up and walked on the stage and grabbed a microphone and just sang that song in front of every single person whose opinion matters more than mine at the moment. HE DID THAT. Then yesterday my daughter announced that it was time to begin baking Christmas cookies. Feeling particularly lazy, I mounted an argument on several fronts: 1) It’s only November 24 2) I don’t feel like it 3) I guarantee that I will eat most of the cookies before they even get to meet the Santa-shaped cookie cutter. She told me that she’d take care of it and proceeded to bake and decorate three batches of sugar cookies (lightly flavored with almond) all by herself. The only responsibility I had was controlling my sugar dough cookie consumption. SHE DID THAT. A disclaimer: this article is not for the people who really, truly believe that their kids are perfect. This is not meant for those parents whose children were born sleeping through the night and walking at nine months and potty trained at a year and five months. It’s not for people who talk about their children’s boundless talent at everything that requires talent, or for those whose offspring go around the table shaking everyone’s hand and making polite conversation at the tender age of three. I wrote this for the parents who sometimes have to leave the restaurant with a red-faced, bellowing child under one arm and an apologizing spouse trailing behind. This is for the ones who

have mastered the art of speaking through their teeth at the kid who refuses to say hello to their employers at the Christmas party. It’s for the ones who drag themselves to sleep every night after rocking their colicky babies to sleep against the advice of every other person (who all know better than they do). I wrote it for those of you who believe that their children are completely capable, but are still astounded when they do independent, wonderful things. This is not because you don’t believe in your children, it’s because you had some doubts about yourselves as parents. Maybe that’s because you make all sorts of grievous errors. You shout out consequences and then forget, or say the one thing that is bound to make a bad situation worse, or slam a door. And these kids of yours (THESE KIDS) don’t pick up their clothes or go to bed or even BATHE until you transform into the person you swore you never would become or say the things your parents said to you. They fight with their siblings and get sassy and leave the new toilet roll ON TOP of the dispenser (monsters!). And then one day, they do things that many people applaud (people who aren’t even related to them through marriage), and you understand that you might have done some good in their upbringing. That makes you wonder which thing was the right one, and how can you repeat that several more times until they get to adulthood. I don’t have that answer for you. But I am happy for you when you get to experience those moments of amazement. I always know when someone reaches that moment, because he or she is wearing this amazed, proud, and completely surprised smile that is unique to parenthood. I’ve felt it on my own face, and I see it regularly on my husband’s. All I can tell you it this: wear it big, and wear it well. You have absolutely earned it (even if you have no idea how).

How to keep from falling on the cobblestones of Puerto Vallarta

ave you ever tripped and fallen on the cobblestones of Puerto Vallarta? Your foot lands in an awkward position. You strain, sprain or fracture your ankle. It is painful. It’s debilitating. You decide to stop walking or limit your walking to avoid a repeat. That’s understandable. You want to protect yourself from future harm. But, if you want to keep moving and stay healthy, that is not the answer. There is a better way. After your injury has healed, there are ways to move that can make it stronger and more mobile. Your ankle joint is designed to move your foot up and down. An important component of walking, running, jumping. It withstands a lot of weight and force day after day. It is under constant stress as you run,

jump or walk. Your ankles need your loving attention. And they will respond to your loving attention. They have been working for you all your life. Now is the time for you to help them help you move. I am going to describe a 3-way ankle movement that will help increase your ankle mobility. If you have a half round foam dome (see photo), you will place it under the front of your foot. If you don’t, you can create a similar lift with a stacked blanket, a rolled up towel, a book, or a yoga block. You can also do this move with your feet flat on the floor (but it will not be as effective). Practice this 3-way ankle mobility stretch several times a day. You will increase your ankle strength. You will increase your ankle range of motion. You will help your ankles do a better job supporting every step you take. The functionality of your knees, feet, and ankles will improve. You will be less likely to fall. Soon you will be in ready to walk on the

3-Way Ankle Mobility Stretch 1. Start in Standing Good Posture (ankles, hips, shoulders, and ears stacked), facing a wall. 2. Place a half round foam dome on the floor in front of you. 3. Place the ball of your right foot on the apex of the dome near the edge of the dome. Keep your right heel on the floor. Keep your left foot at a comfortable distance behind you. 4. Keep your weight stacked over your right heel. 5. Breathe in. Breathe out. Become aware of your breath. 6. Bend straight forward at your ankle. Do not use your knee. If you do, you’ve gone too far. Make your movement smaller. 7. Repeat 3, 6, 9 times. Listen to your inner athlete. 8. Now bend your ankle forward toward the inside of your foot. Again, do not use your knee, just your ankle. 9. Repeat 3, 6, 9 times. 10. Now bend your ankle forward toward the outside of your foot. Again, do not use your knee. It will follow your ankle, but it doesn’t not initiate the movement. 11. Repeat 3, 6, 9 times. 12. You have completed this 3-way move. 13. Repeat on the opposite foot.

hey say respect is earned more than given, and as this concept is the basis of a meritocracy, it’s a belief I firmly subscribe to. Beyond the basics of the social contract (do no undue harm, assist the needy where convenient, confirm a group picture with every participant before posting, etc.) respect is a recognition of someone´s unique value. An acknowledgement of individual worth, a lens through which to see the best in people. It is respect that brought me to La Chingona, aka Heavy Taco Metal, for the first time after living in the general proximity of the restaurant for about a year and a half. A social media picture posted by Madeline--you know her from the editorial in the front of the paper-and tagged to the establishment was all I needed to see. Behind this burger there was clearly someone who I had not given the proper respect. The Vibes: Emrah, a German immigrant who shares my enthusiasm for experience, earned my respect almost immediately by ripping into my a--um, offering unvarnished feedback about a recent entry into this space: “There are a million locations of that place in Guadalajara, it´s like Starbucks. They don´t need your help, man...I pick up the paper almost every week to see what you´ve found now, it’s usually always something cool. I expected better from you than that.“ Hey, it was new to me, but I’m confident enough to take some constructive criticism. We continued to chat over a few frosty bottles, and at some point I made an offhand comment about the convenient location... convenient for me, anyway, with my apartment complex located a 5 minute walk from the table. I made note of the streetside seating-always dig that configuration--and the short 2-block walk from Francisco Madero, the main town

Decisions, decisions. Emrah made my choice much easier in his signature style: “Oh, you don’t need that...I mean, sure, go ahead, look at it, but I know what you want. he renowned flamenco group Tatewari, named for the Huichol grandfather fire, introduce their 4th CD with a grand performance at Incanto’s Cabaret theater. We had a preview in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle last Thursday, a stupendous presentation calling for encores and receiving abundant praise. The music was pure and energetic and from the moving Fuego Dentro to the lively Las Caletas we were blown away by the new original compositions by Esaú Galván and one by Dany Márquez exquisitely performed by Tatewari and guests. Tatewari is made up of three young men who grew up together in the coastal town of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Esaú Galván, Alberto “Mimi” Ramírez and Dany Márquez They began playing music together in their prep school years studying with experts in the area. Esaú went on to study guitar at the university and did post graduate work with maestros in Guadalajara and finally in Madrid, Spain where he broadened his mastery of flamenco guitar. In 2011, Sonny Davis from British Columbia rounded out the group adding his sparkling personality and his talent on cajón. With three marvelous CDs already under their belts, this summer they completed a fourth called XII.IV, signifying twelve years together and their fourth CD. This is an entirely new and stunning collection consisting of 8 original compositions by Esaú Galván and one by Dany Márquez. The themes are spontaneous and natural, illustrating the maturity of

the group as they have grown and evolved together. The sounds are fresh and the whole speaks to us of love—the love of life and the natural beauty of the landscape, the sea, the ports, and other areas of Banderas Bay. In this music every note counts to bring the listener closer to the magic of it’s splendor. The number Al Fausto is a work of joy written for Esaú’s young son. The ceremony included two minutes of silence for the fallen soldiers of the Royal Canadian Forces and the Armed Forces of America followed by a balloon release by Donna Wong. “The Last Post” by Barry Valleau on trumpet.

The Second Best Time

Chinese proverb states “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” We are all responsible for what we do to this planet. We have to make individual decisions to save it now; not later. Later may be too late. Every year, eight million tonnes of plastic ends up in the ocean. This level of plastic pollution is poisonous — to the oceans, marine life and our bodies. It kills and injures countless marine life. When fish eat it, plastic and its toxins enter our food chain.It’s already entered our water supplies. Every day, humans unknowingly eat and drink microplastics. We must be more responsible consumers. We can’t let our throwaway culture destroy our marine ecosystems for the sake of to-go

coffee cups, single-use grocery bags, straws, take-out food containers, water bottles, and plastic wrap. One of the focuses of the International Friendship Club (IFC) is to improve society in Puerto Vallarta by improving education. Last season the club donated $20,000 pesos to the American School here to buy a plastic shredding machine and a moulding machine. They will serve to teach kids the need to take control of a small part of their planet. The students will collect plastics, shred them and mould them into usable products. This is all part of the “Sustainability Program” at the school which is teaching students, staff and the surrounding community about sustainability. When I visited the school earlier this month Adam Kilner, the Middle and High School Principal, was

surprised that I managed to get past security with my styrofoam coffee cup in my hand because styrofoam is already prohibited within the school’s walls. Effective 1st January the school is banning the use of single-use plastics by anyone in the school’s community. That means no more plastic drink bottles, straws or take out food containers by students or staff. The American School in Puerto Vallarta is part of a worldwide system of teaching and practicing sustainability in the school and the community. It is known as Compass Education. Being part of this system means that students must be an integral part of a whole-school learning community, not only learning about sustainability in the classroom, but rather seeing and experiencing it being modelled and practiced in all that happens in the school and beyond. So if schools can practice sustainability why can’t we do the same in our community? Can you give up single-use plastics for a day? A week? Permanently? Will you work to get re-cycling of plastics a policy in your condo community? The Earth Charter states “We stand at a critical moment in Earth’s history, a time when humanity must choose its future.As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise.” It’s up to us, now!

or those of you just reading this article for the first time, we are currently in the middle of a massive remodel of a beautiful condo in Bucerias Nayarit. This three-bedroom, ocean-front home was built and furnished in 2008. Our goal is to bring everything in on-time and on-budget so that the owners can list the condo for sale by January 1, 2019. We have come a long way in the last seven days. The big, dark chocolate painted wood furniture has been removed from the unit and transported over to our carpentry shop. To brighten up the condo and make it look and feel much more spacious, we are having all the pieces repainted a soft cream. This means a lot of sanding and priming, but it will be worth it. To get a manufacturers quality of paint finish, our carpenter is using a spray gun instead of a brush. To ensure we are all aligned on the quality we need, before working on all the furniture, our top-of-the-line carpenter showed us a sample. He took one of the shelves from the entertainment cabinetry and did a test on the underside. It is perfect! He has our go-ahead for the rest of the pieces. With a lot of the furniture out of the condo, it was time to do the interior painting. This unit has three bedrooms on two floors, a stunning

There are a lot of folks who will offer to do interior and exterior painting here. Everyone seems to know someone who paints. The trick is to find the right painters who do a quality job, so you get the job done the first time correctly. We need this to be top-notch so that the owner can command the highest resale price. All lines must be razor-edge straight and no visible brush lines. Luckily, we have a great crew with a great foreman who inspects the work daily to ensure any questions are answered correctly, and any issues are addressed right away. Just as we take a deep breath thinking that everything is going to plan, we get hit with a big challenge. We plan to update the kitchen cabinetry by taking out two of the three upper cabinets and replace them with open shelving as well as repaint the cupboards and shelves white. Our carpenter has discovered that the boxes are made from MDF and plastic meaning we may not be able to paint them. Easy, delicious, chickpea salad

e are in the midst of the holiday season and I felt inspired to share this quick, delicious chickpea (garbanzo bean) salad that I like to whip up when I don’t have a lot of time and I want to have something in the fridge to munch on or a refreshing side-dish to take to a holiday party or event.

This is a versatile salad because you can modify it as you see fit. You can add parsley, cilantro for spiciness or the much loved avocado - oh yeah! Access your imagination for all of the possibilities. Here is the recipe: Ingredients 2 cans of garbanzo beans 2 medium cucumbers 1 medium tomato 1 lemon or 3 - 4 limes 2Tbsp. EVOO (extra virgin olive oil)

2Tbsp. Braggs amino acid 1/2 cup of cilantro or parsley (optional) 1 chopped avocado (optional) Once you have all of your ingredients, open the cans and rinse the beans. Take off all of the skins that start to peel off the garbanzos ( you don’t want them floating around in the salad). Chop up the cucumber into little cubes, then the tomato. Put garbanzos, cucumber and tomato into a medium sized mixing bowl, add your EVOO, braggs amino acids, and juice of lemon or limes. Next add option chopped cilantro or parsley. Mix it all together and chill for one and half to two hours. Once it’s nice and cold, add your option chopped avocado and mix. This salad is really simple, refreshing and flavorful. The Guadalupe Processions During the first twelve days of December processions take place through the centre of Puerto Vallarta with thousands walking, singing and praying through the streets each night to the Church of Our Lady Of Guadalupe that bears the name of the patron saint of both Puerto Vallarta and of Mexico. Businesses, hotels, restaurants, neighborhoods and civic associations as well as prominent local families take

part in these processions to the church for a special mass they have devoted to the Virgin whose ‘birthday’ is celebrated on December 12th. The streets are lined with people watching the processions. People come from the mountain villages to take part and bring with them crafts and traditional foods for sale. It is an excellent time to enjoy tamales and atole as well as many other wonderful treats. The Church of Our Lady Of Guadalupe is a unique structure is a famous landmark in its own right, as its elaborate crown allegedly designed to resemble

Processions begin each night around nightfall and last until all have passed through the doors of the church. As the twelve days go on the processions get larger until the December 12th procession which lasts the full day and night with thousands paying their respects to the Virgin of Guadalupe. Bliss workshops – Open to men too!

K, this is an invitation, to men as well as ladies, (although I have to forewarn that it may be a very estrogen-charged room!). Monthly from November through May, 2-part BLISS WORKSHOPS are being offered by yours truly (sustainably yours?) at Hacienda de Arte in Bucerias!! BLISS, hmmm, you may be thinking. Sounds like a crystal-grippin’, granola crunchin’ yoga retreat on following your bliss, the kind that only serves kale lattes. Only good vibes and privilege allowed. Well, I’m here to say that it’s none of that. Additionally, that wallowing in BLISS is a crucial pathway to making the world a more sustainable and holistic place. What’s the definition of BLISS in this sense? It’s the merger of your passions, gifts and purpose. Fusing these together, the ‘BLISSER’ is tangibly becoming the best version

of him or herself. And a world population becoming the best version of itself is pretty much the best way to actually achieve such utopian ideals as world peace, etc, etc. The 2 part workshop will emphasis both left brained (creative) and right brained (analytical) approaches to manifesting goals. Of course, many good folk are in flux with their goals in the first

place, with poorly defined senses of personal mission. Others have detailed hopes and expectations. Our Course will appeal to both, and includes a workbook that empowers both types to define as well as refine their visions, no matter where they are at with them. The first workshop focuses on Planning, excavating your deepest and reaching your highest year-

nings, how to reverse engineer a future you are actively creating. The provided workbook allows you to continue digging deeper in between courses on your own time. The structure of the session is a lecture format that focuses on the participants as individuals. The second monthly workshop emphasizes more of a playful approach, with sharing interactions between the participants and the artistic expression of their plans and hopes. We review the practice of vision boarding, not merely as the collaging of goals but rather as a habit which evolves and expands with one’s vision over a timescale. My sister in law and sister in spirit, Nicole Majewski, is co-hosting the Creative Session. Her colorful expertise leading vision board workshops is also available for private groups and team building events (casaiyarilodemarcos@ gmail.com). What especially makes this course meaningful is that BLISS is relevant to every single person on the planet, right up there with eating and breathing. It’s pretty much

While humans tend to dream up many goals (see Laos, learn to make a soufflé, become a mentor), all of these goals are secondary vehicles to the ultimate goal of being happy. While ‘how to be happy’ is one of the great philosophical questions with often materialistic connotations, we will be addressing a more transcendent version of happiness. BLISS, is the zone where you are operating as the best version of yourself no matter what life throws at you, rain or shine, rich or poor, from Puerto Vallarta to the gulag. It is the zone of saints and sages but accessible to everyone else too. As always, Hacienda del Arte creates a nurturing backdrop to the content of the course. In fact, this very special hub of creation – whether of art or the creation of you becoming the best version of yourself – deserves special mention in an upcoming article. Having a pet becomes a form of entertainment with no great responsibilities,” psychologist Ricardo Trujillo told EFE. This fits perfectly with the growing pet ownership by young professionals in recent years, economist Jose Nabor told EFE. Trujillo, who teaches at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), said that for young people, a pet “in some cases is an accessory of a person’s life, like a car, a computer or a mobile phone,” nowadays preferable to having a husband, wife or partner. The latest National Statistics and Geography Institute (INEGI) study found that in 2015, out of the 80 million adults living in Mexico,

The National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Financial Service Users (Condusef), meanwhile, said the growth rate of annual sales of dog and cat foods over the last five years increased by 10 percent annually, an exponential growth that looks like rising even more, said Nabor, a researcher with the UNAM’s Economic Research Institute. Taking into account that the average medium-income household in Mexico spends between 200 and 300 pesos ($10 to $15) a month on pet food, that signifies a monthly nationwide expense of around 13 billion pesos ($640 million). If the cost of vaccines, veterinary care and cleaning the pets are added to that tab, Nabor estimates a monthly total of 30 billion pesos ($1.47 billion). As for the cost of the animal itself, the price of buying a dog

or cat begins at some 300 pesos (about $15) and could be more than 15,000 pesos ($738). Dogs are the usual choice among the Mexican population,

Oh what a night…. This past Saturday, approximately 140 guests enjoyed a glamorous and enchanting evening at The Iguana Restaurant, located in Casa Kimberly, where money was raised for the continued rescue, rehabilitation and adoption efforts of the SPCA de Puerto Vallarta. Guests dined on scrumptious appetizers and a delicious fourcourse dinner. The very talented violin trio, regularly seen at La Cappella, serenaded the guests through the cocktail hour followed by the mariachi sounds of Joya de Mexico. Our guests were shown a poignant video put together by our volunteer Carol Martin reminding everyone of the work we do here along with a few recent success stories. Some energetic and entertaining fundraising by the most talented and charismatic auctioneer, John Curley, followed the video. In addition to the live auction portion, John rallied everyone with a paddle raise. The target was to raise the funds necessary to purchase a blood chemistry machine for the sanctuary. This equipment will allow us to control a major expense while expediting diagnosis and treatment. We are happy to report we

achieved our goal! There are so many people we wish to thank for their assistance as well as donations. I apologize in advance for anyone I may have missed. Your donations and the money we raised as a result will be put to good use. his is a work of art I have been appreciating for the last three years when I would take the Ramblases bus back home to Palo Seco. It is located near the cross streets of Colombia and Venezuela. At first I tried to take a picture of it from the bus; but those attempts always turned out to be futile. So this year upon seeing it again, I decided to actually go there and take this photograph. What I also like about this piece of art, is that it finally puts a face on the artists who create these wonderful paintings. For this artist; its a wild and zany guy simply having fun putting his skills to good use for all to enjoy. I am also really glad to have captured this for posterity because since last year, this work of art has started to decay and now it’s starting to become apparent. Once this action starts its relentless and will continue at a more rapid pace. As Neil Young once sang, “Rust never sleeps”, nor does the deterioration process once it takes hold of these paintings. So enjoy it while you can because for me this painting

he great classic Mayan culture flourished in Meso America across the southern part of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador in the 3rd to 9th century. Their art can be seen in the ruins now, in pyramids that stand in Palenque in Chiapas, Tikal in Guatemala, and Copan in Honduras. Many Mexican artists have identified themselves with the Mayans who created sculptures, murals, hieroglyphics, and a calendar based on astrological and mathematical calculations, intrigued by the beauty and the mystery of their ancestors. Diego Riviera represented these indigenous people in his mural “History of the Mexican People“. Riviera was born in Guanajuato and is represented on the 500 peso bill. His wife and artist, Frida Kahlo has said that his greatest concern was to “raise the standard of the Mexican Indians whom he loves so deeply and who he portrayed in painting after painting.“ The Mexican poet and Nobel Prize winner Octavio Paz has stated his belief that the soul of Mexico is indigenous. Kahlo also

identified with the indigenous ancestry of Mexico rather than with the contemporary art of her time, making her work unique. Today, in Chiapas, women continue to weave the Mayan images into their clothes, their ‘trajes’. They maintain and build their history each time they weave and wear their woven dresses. When a woman weaves, she binds herself to her people, her tribe, her village and her ancestors. The weaving, done on a back-strap loom, displays her religion, her village, her marital status and her ability, personality and talent. The designs woven are ancient and have great meaning, there is the moon, the serpent and the zig-zag, representing lightening. It was Rigoberta Menchú, who was awarded the Nobel Peace prize, who gave “ traje “ it’s due, educating people on the meaning of this distinctive dress. The traje, the huipil has survived the collapse of the Mayan civilization, the Spanish conquest and foreign rule. It has triumphed over murder and oppression to give us a form of art that has withstood the test of time and is an object of beauty and hope.

All the passion of the “Sport of Kings” will be on display at the VII Riviera Nayarit Polo Cup, celebrated from December 6-9, 2018, at La Patrona Polo & Equestrian Club. The club is considered one of the best designed clubs in the country and lies tucked away in the tropical jungles of San Francisco (San Pancho), Nayarit. Although it’s the cup’s seventh year, this is only the second event hosted at La Patrona. The event will welcome several top international players, with Canada as the guest country. “We’ve prepared a beautiful event filled with rhythm and flavor, as we’ll also include the best regional and Mexican gastronomy,” said Rubén Carrillo, managing director of Tierra Tropical. “We’ll have world-class guest chefs and mixologists on-hand to share their most exclusive recipes with our guests.” Martin Harriague, La Patrona’s polo manager, talked about the event program and the compe-

ting teams. The tournament will include four handicap goals with players from Mexico, Portugal, and Canada. There is currently an alliance in place with the polo club from Calgary. “The Canadian community in the Riviera Nayarit is very participatory, which is why we chose them to be our special guests,” he said. “And by integrating a team from Canada we’re also accomplishing the mission of bringing polo representatives from around the world.” Something more… The culinary experience is one of the highlights of the activities for the VII Riviera Nayarit Polo Cup. When Javier Alba González shared the beauty of our village with his bride, Berenice Uribe, she was hooked as she likes to fish, snorkel and scuba dive! Prior to life in La Cruz, Berenice says “I love working, I love to serve and I like to create unique places. I’m an accountant and enjoy supervising

My mom was an accountant and liked décor too so I guess it all runs in the family.” Choosing the name was logical, they wanted it to be easy to find and it is on the street Langosta. The official number of the property is ten. They got their original permits on November 10th and opened December 10th. (2015). Diez = Ten. Berenice exclaimed “The way we see it, we want YOU to give us a TEN!” Passionate about their offering every year they’ve made it better than before. The first year, of course, it was the creation of Langosta Diez; fab flavours in gorgeous suroundings. The next year they added ‘you can buying anything, the glasses you’re drinking from, the chair you’re sitting on, anything’. Last season they brought cooking to the table, Nitrogen ice cream, agave dessert; crunchy agave leaf with tequila ice cream and coffee caviar and yoghurt popcorn. This season is the big renovation and a big reveal it shall be. They’re replacing the wood pergola with a concrete roof with clay tiles that gives a mexican touch and cool ceiling. They’ve created a

new entrance including an inviting grand iron door. They’ve expanded the iron windows for grander views to the street and better air flow. Recreating the splendor of the indoor terraza they’ve retained the rustic cantera rock, white and blue colours of the Mediterranean and added even more plants to complete the interior. They continue planning for the future where they’ll add another level for commercial premises for shops or restaurants and likely a sky bar. This season brings new menu items, including: TACO TRILOGY; beef, chicken and catch of the day tacos, served in blue corn tortillas and grandma´s sauce. FOUR CHEESE GNOCCHI; filled with zucchini and spinach, topped with four cheese sauce. LIME AND PROSSECO SALMON; grilled in the wood burning oven with eureka lime and prosseco sauce, garnished with cauliflower cake and sautéed asparagus ABRUZZO TROUT; salmon trout filled with shredded red pepper and mushrooms, wrapped in prosciutto and sautéed in sage butter. SCAMPI; butter sautéed shrimp, with basil and white wine, served with fettuccini and slices of Padano cheese. EL DIEZ MEDALLION; grilled beef medallion glazed with wild berries and balsamic vinegar, served with green beans and potato. They had me at scampi!! Rocking the North Shore – Sayulita, Higuera Blanca, San Pancho

What better way to prepare for a Canadian tour than by cruising the highways of Banderas Bay. On average, the band travels 500+ kilometers a week, requiring two vehicles, with 14+ hours night time travel. If they can navigate the overhanging jungle vines, unmarked “topes”, and narrow roads, they should be prepared for Canada with its “no topes”, painted lines, and wide shoulders.

The week starts on Monday, with a trip to Ana Bananas in La Cruz for their second season, in time for Meatloaf Monday. Showtime 7 pm. Tuesdays see Soul Trip off to Sayulita where they are entering their second season at El Atico Hookah bar. Sorry guys, that’s hookah not hooker! Showtime 9:30 pm Wednesday’s portal in San Pancho, at the El Gallo, is on hold due to bureaucratic issues holding up the permits. El Gallo is family owned and specializes in local ingredients and Mexican cuisine. The family has been involved in supporting local musicians for many years. This allows the band a day for relaxing, composing, rehearsing and availability for private events. I was fortunate to hire the band last

February for my wife’s “XX” surprise birthday party, and I have still not used up all those “husband points”. Hoping to gain more for not publishing how many “XX’s” there were. Thursdays the band is in Bucerias at the Drunken Duck, where they started, three seasons ago. The specialty in-house ribs should be available. Showtime 9 pm.
