A
t the Tribune we want you to have the best experience possible while you explore Puerto Vallarta, the Bay of Banderas and Riviera Nayarit. Here are some helpful tips for traveling. TIME ZONE: The entire state of Jalisco is on Central Time, as is the southern part of the State of Nayarit starting from San Blas in the north. BUSES: A system of urban buses with different routes can bring you from one end of the bay to the other and all the spots in between. If you’re going further than San Pancho, head to the main bus terminal to catch a ‘Pacifico’ bus. Current fare is 10.00 pesos. TAXIS: There are set rates within defined zones of town. Do not enter a taxi without agreeing on the price with the driver first. Make a note of the taxi number in case you leave something behind. Drivers typically do not carry change.
UBER: New in 2017 to Puerto Vallarta, Uber is still experiencing some growing pains particularly in the state of Nayarit. Uber is about 25-50% cheaper than a taxi, but this is subject to change. The benefits of using Uber are set fares and the ability to follow up directly with your driver if there is an incident or you leave an item behind. MONEY EXCHANGE: Typically a bank will give you a higher rate of exchange than the exchange booths (Caja de Cambio). You will need your passport. Better yet, use your bank card to withdraw funds from any ATM. Note that ATM’s in the banks are the safest to use and charge lower fees. DRINKING WATER: While Puerto Vallarta’s water has been awarded a certification of purity for the past two decades, the quality
of the water tested at the source varies greatly from what comes out of the tap at the other end. So do be careful. If you want to be doubly sure, you can pick up bottled water just about anywhere. EXPORTING PETS: Falling in love with the street dog outside your hotel is easy to do and it’s also easy to bring them home with you too. The process is inexpensive and only takes a day or two. You need a certificate of health from a local vet among other things. For the most up-to-date information contact the Puerto Vallarta SPCA at spcapv@ gmail.com. COMMON SENSE: Just as you wouldn’t walk around your hometown drunk and belligerent, it is not acceptable to do that here. While Mexico is a tolerant culture, basic politeness is appreciated. Don’t pee in the streets. Don’t flash your money or expensive gadgets. Pay attention to your surroundings. Know where you are going. Pay your bills (and don’t forget to tip). And have fun! DRINKING AND DRIVING: First off – just don’t. The consequences are not worth it. Taxis or Ubers are cheap and plentiful. Fines are as much as 12,000 pesos. You can be taken to jail and your vehicle impounded. There are many checkstops on the weekends, and you will be asked to blow if they suspect you have been drinking. LEGAL SYSTEM: Not knowing the law is not a valid excuse in Mexico, or anywhere. If you find yourself caught in a legal situation be aware that guilt is presumed until your innocence can be proven. This is a very difficult lesson to learn if you are visiting from the United States or Canada. Immediately contact your consulate for assistance.

CALLING IN MEXICO Calling phones in Mexico can be tricky. There are different codes you need to use depending if you are calling landlines or cellular phones and if they are local or long distance. LONG-DISTANCE CALLS FROM WITHIN MEXICO For national long-distance calls (within Mexico) the code is 01 plus the area code and phone number. For international long-distance calls, first dial 00, then the country code (U.S. and Canada country code is 1), so you would dial 00 + 1 + area code + 7 digit number. CALLING CELL PHONES (FROM A LAND LINE) If you are calling from a landline within the area code of the Mexican cell phone number dial 044, the 10 digit number. Outside of the area code (but still within Mexico) dial 045 and then the 10 digit phone number. Cell phone to cell phone only requires the 10 digit number. CALLING TOLL-FREE NUMBERS Some toll free numbers work from Mexico to the US and Canada, but many do not. Those that do work are often not toll-free. You need to dial a different prefix. Mexico- Mix Puppies for Adoption!

hese two little ankle biters were scooped up on the side of the highway in Bucerias and are now being fostered in Vallarta. They are about 8 weeks old, boy and girl, probably a small to medium ‘mexico mix’ and are being treated now by a local and vet. They are both healthy, playful and adorable. t is with a great deal of anguish, that organizers announce the cancellation of CarnavalPV scheduled for Tuesday, March 5th. We wish to thank those who have supported the annual event over the past several years, especially the south side businesses and organizations. Due to the increasing number of visitors to Puerto Vallarta, the registration numbers were low. The additional time needed to properly participate is just not available at this time of year. People of Vallarta are dedicating their time to our visitors, to ensure everyone is enjoying our paradise. For those that have paid, refunds will be processed immediately. A couple quick notes about events – this weekend is the What a Drag fundraiser for the Banderas Bay Woman’s Shelter – page 34 for details on how you can get tickets or search on FB events for What A Drag 2019 - read John’s article on page 30 where he talks about the staggering rates of domestic violence in this country. At least in Canada and the USA there are (some) services and facilities for women and children to turn to – here, not so much. There is ONE shelter between here and Guadalajara and NONE in the state of Nayarit. The shelter here can help approx. 30 families a year. 30. Yes, thirty. I didn’t forget to add an extra zero. It’s truly overwhelming and why every time I ask Corazon de Nina

Avocado, squash, cucumbers, citrus fruit and so much more are completely dependent on bees. Yet, honeybees are disappearing globally at an alarming rate. Why? What can be done to save them? How are they populated? Talit Leon Mantecon is a professional beekeeper with a deep knowledge of the science of bees, particularly honeybees in Mexico. David Erne is a retired attorney from Milwaukee who has been a hobby beekeeper for almost 40 years. Last year, the two of them traveled to Tepic to secure the 2 hives that have been installed at the Vallarta Botanical Garden.

The Best of Vallarta According to Me Then
By Marcia Blondin here is a magic about Vallarta that I have experienced only once before – in Delphi, Greece, at dawn, a long time ago. That same feeling struck me hard the second my foot hit the ground at the Vallarta airport in December 1986. It is useless trying to explain that magnetic pull to anyone who hasn’t been caught in Vallarta’s seductive and lovely web. I wept all the way back to Canada after my first two-week vacation here was over. I went back to the cold, miserable weather and my only consola-

tion was that every morning when I got up to go to work, I was one day closer to returning to Vallarta and visiting my soul that remained here without me. Is it the people? The weather? Scenery? Food? Cheap booze? Yes and yes again. Is it perfect? In a lot of ways, it is. It is the imperfections that keep the entire world from moving here; that and the truth that the “magic” of Vallarta is very selective. If it gets you, you will have no choice but to happily surrender or be miserable for the rest of your days. The first couple of years living
here, I would cautiously open one eye every morning and glance around for a second; then with a deep exhale, get out of bed, knowing I was really and truly here and not just dreaming. Living and breathing the bloody exhaust fumes from the busses below my window, then looking through that haze into the Bay of Banderas. All real. And all mine. It’s no surprise Vallarta is overflowing with artists of all makes and models. In our own ways we seem to have to try and manifest the magic to others by painting or weaving, acting, dancing or writing
or just daydreaming at the beach watching the waves; having a drink, toes warm in the sand, sun changing the color of our skin. Moment after perfect moment. They happen to me every day. And, Vallarta has choices. Do I walk, drive, take a bus or a taxi? If I want to spend a thousand pesos for lunch I certainly can. I can also walk into Farmacia Guadalajara buy a can of tuna, a pack of crackers and a beer, go park myself on a piece of sand with a million dollar view, and call it lunch for under 50 pesos. The freedom of going on a bus and
drinking a quiet (operative word) beer is fantastic when you have a hangover. Small things that happen every single day of my life in this city. I have seen so many changes in 26 years – an eruption of building along the entire coast of the Bay of Banderas. Many people think it’s bad, that the character of Old Town is being destroyed. All I know for sure is this: there is no amount of cement capable of covering up the magic that is Vallarta. You just need to know how to look. Originally published December 2017.

I am the preschool coordinator and nursery teacher at the American School of Puerto Vallarta. I am also both unsurprised and not a bit sorry that this list of my favorites is mostly about places to eat. The proven approach to furnishing a home in Riviera Nayarit
I
f you, like me, live far away from a lot of family and friends, social media can be a great tool for connecting. I love that I can watch my best friend’s son at hockey practice on Instagram, and find out on Facebook that my old high school pal got re-married. It was good to know that my college friend’s mom had passed away so I could send her a message even if I couldn’t wrap my own physical arms around her. It’s been a lifeline to an entire community of people I care about but rarely see. But, as a parent, I’ve had some serious reservations. Because, let’s face it, social media has brought a whole new facet to the parenting game. People born in the seventies or eighties, let’s all make a circle and hold hands and remember how we used to play with our friends in the street (I didn’t really do that, but I’ll hold hands anyway) and had 75% less parental supervision and had the best feathered bangs on the block. And we still survived and became the TOTALLY un-traumatized, fantastically well adjusted adults you see before you holding hands and crying a bit. After we let go of our hands and laugh self-consciously, let’s remember what year it is and understand that we are raising our kids in a whole new world with a whole new set of rules that are actually being made up as we go. Let me ask you this: has your child been cyber-bullied? Has she been DM’d by strangers on the Musical. ly app which they were just using to make cute little videos of themselves lip-synching to Cardi B? Has he had to read his grandparent’s friend’s opinions on immigration? These are just a few of the many, many ways your child can be victimized on social media without leaving the comfort of their very own bedrooms. On top of it all, now we are being warned that, during your child’s favorite YouTube video about opening
small plastic eggs with prizes in them that you will buy and then step on with your bare feet, some horribly thought up creature named Momo could jump in and try to get their personal information and also convince them to hurt themselves. Then, just when you have hidden the tablets and cell phones in your underwear/old receipts drawer, The Internet announces that it’s just a hoax and has actually affected very few people. In other words: we not only have to fear for our children’s online safety, we will NEVER KNOW WHEN THE PROBLEM IS REAL. The possibilities are literally endless (or at least in the numbers much higher than we can count). So I think what’s wanted here, in this new digital age, is a bit of common sense and a whole lot of calm, neither of which is my forte as a mother, but I’ll give it a whirl. Here’s what we do as a family. Please keep in mind that, even though we do take internet safety seriously, we have had all of the issues I listed a few paragraphs ago, except for the Momo one. We talk a lot about never giving personal information to anyone online, and to keep your contacts limited to people we know IRL (in real life. Oh, another tip, learn all the acronyms of communication) unless we talk about it first. Teens are REALLLLLY big on having privacy and that’s cool. However, it cannot be emphasized enough that we, as parents, are responsible for their safety and we expect to monitor them. We allow them to have their own devices but all have a parent control program downloaded as a prerequisite. Sorry, not at all sorry. I like the Qustodio app. I always tell them that I will not read the reports unless it is an alert of suspicious activity. I try to learn along with them, instead of making grumpy “well in my day” comments which just widen the gap. If we learn the great ways that we can use today’s technology, we’ll be able to model good social media use to our kids.

ou have purchased your home in Mexico, and it suddenly hits you. How are you going to furnish it? You live hundreds of miles away. You are not familiar with any of the stores in Mexico. You don’t speak Spanish to converse well with salespeople. Where do you even start? No wonder new homeowners get knots in their stomachs! The purpose of this column is to help make furnishing your home in Mexico easier. I want to help you reduce stress. Based on my personal experience over the past ten years owning a furniture store in Mexico, I hope to save you time, money and frustration. “We just purchased a new condo and need to furnish it fully. Where do we even start?” This is by far, the most frequent question I am asked. All totaled, the number of items you need to purchase to outfit your new home will be in the hundreds. We are talking everything from bedroom and living room furniture to cutlery and brooms. It is, undeniably, a daunting task. To manage this scale of project, you must have a systematic plan. When I meet with a new customer for the first time, I try to do so over a relaxing cup of coffee or tea. The first thing I tell them to do is to take a deep breath and relax. I know that their stress level has been increasing since they started thinking about furnishing their home. Knowing they have someone who has experience and knowledge and can help them every step of the way immediately reduces their angst. The next step is to hear all about their new home in Mexico. I love to hear about their newest purchase and how they plan to use it. This allows me to find out relevant infor-
mation such as whether it will be primarily for their use or if they will be renting or both. It also gives me some background into who will living or visiting the home such as children, grandchildren, and pets. A good listening ear is required to pick up critical information that will help to create an inventory list as well as offer recommendations on the best materials from which
their furniture should be made. For example, a home with grandchildren and pets or one that is going to be rented out should absolutely go with performance fabric for their sofa or sectional. This revolutionary cover, which costs the same as regular covers, will not stain. Any liquid will bead up on the surface and wipe off. Next, we talk about how the new homeowner wants to feel when they open the door and walk into their home. For instance, do they want to feel the serenity of the sea or the vibrancy of Mexico? I often ask customers to send me a concept picture of interiors they like, ones they have seen on the internet or in magazines. he last time I visited Parque del Pitillal, located a few blocks past Macroplaza on Francisco Villa, it was to participate in a colorful children’s craft project, because that’s the type of person I am. This go-round, I arrived at the park with the intent of becoming fairly intoxicated with cheap and delicious craft beer, because that’s the type of person I am too. What, do I have to choose or something? The Vibes: In the interest of full disclosure, I have to say the event was a bit more understated than I envisioned, but since the words “beer festival” bring to mind a huge concert with pom-pom waving beerleaders and a foaming fountain of lager three stories tall, the event planners can hardly be blamed for my overstimulated imagination. Instead, seven of the area’s top breweries brought their finest wares to the square on this beautiful Sunday afternoon, giving curious drunks a chance to discover Vallarta’s fast-growing selection of beers that are not terrible. After successfully resisting the inflatable bounce house the organizers of the event had wisely brought onsite for parents to store their children in (but only because larger children such as myself are best served by dedicated trampoline parks like the new one in town that you will hear about soon), I drained the last of my terrible street beer and breezed toward the tables. Because we share similar interests, I wasn’t surprised to see a few of my bar buddies already on the scene. Most of them sipped plastic cups of Drunk Norris, an American Pale Ale apparently formulated in the Marina Beer Lab specifically to kick one’s ass. The Vices: Tasty as it was, I had my suddenly refined palate trained on the brewery’s coffee ale, which I would have happy to provide an unnecessarily convoluted description of in this sentence had any been available at the time. I was informed that the beer wasn’t cold enough
yet--a perfectly valid reason to delay in serving it--and that I should return in 10 minutes or so. Deferred but not defeated, I returned to my friends for 10 minutes or so of conversation about our typical bar topics, this time with the pleasant backdrop of Pitillal, because a change of pace is nice sometimes and that’s why people drink craft beer in the first place. 10 minutes or so later, I returned to the booth to repeat my request... only to have my dreams dry up like a raisin in the sun as the freshly amended sign announced that the beer was somehow sold out. Now that’s cold. I was forced to drown my sorrows in a passion fruit sour, which was admittedly pretty good but received a substantial deduction on my scoring sheet because I didn’t get my way. An hour or two went by as I continued to sample the selection...a porter here, a stout there, a cider I didn’t care for (just so nobody can say I never say anything nega-
tive in this column) but I couldn’t help but to occasionally cast a longing glance at the “sold out” sign next to my brew of first choice. As I gazed, I reflected on the inherent unfairness of life, the unpredictability of circumstance, and the relative nature of--wait, what’s this now? I looked up from our conversation circle just in time to spot a technician from the Brew Lab changing the coffee ale listing from “sold out” to “1 left.” All pretence of civility flew from my body as I knocked several people to the ground with explosive momentum, treading upon their prone bodies in a mad dash to seize the last bottle for my very own. If I needed forgiveness the church was right across the street. Okay fine, no one was actually harmed in my pursuit of hoppiness, but I did make my way over there without delay. It was the most rewarding choice possible for my final beer of the festival...I even let a few friends take a sip because that’s the
type of person I am as well. The Verdict: In the immortal words of an American Supreme Court justice, “I like beer,” and although I don’t mind drinking pretty much anything that fills a cooler with cans, I can also appreciate a well-
made product. Chulada de Cerveza shone a spotlight on some of the region’s premium offerings, exposing them to the wider populace for what is hopefully the first of many such events in the future. Maybe I’ll catch you there.

message to Puerto Vallarta: Twenty-eight years ago today - February 28, 1991 - I moved permanently to Puerto Vallarta. It took me five long years from my first visit in 1986, to get back here, where my soul lived without me until the 28th of February, '91. I was so excited that day and I remain the same. Every single day and there have been more than 10,000 of them, Vallarta has shown me a bit more of her secrets. I hold each one in my heart and soul with so much gratitude. Thank you, Vallarta and every single person who lives and breathes this same air. I love you. I love you.” I posted this on Facebook last
week and was rewarded with lovely comments and dozens of hearts from those expats who “get it” and have taken the same decision to not freeze for half the year, every year. And, being warm every day is a small part of the magic that lives in Vallarta. Talking about magic…the food at Barrio Bistro qualifies! I asked director Alain Perreault for his recommendations for dinner before his play premiered in the same neighborhood. His reply was instant – Barrio Bistro. I have never been because it’s not convenient to walk to. A genuinely lame excuse that’s for sure. My companions, Mark and Dana Zeller had never been either, so we were set to be amazed. Oh, my…we shared a pizza that
was so thin and crispy and topped with pesto, spinach, shrimp, caramelized onions, capers, and goat cheese, and I have likely left out some ingredients. The Zellers had red snapper that looked moist and smelled divine. My arrachera was charred on the outside and rare as could be inside – perfect, in other words. Service was prompt and easy, the atmosphere fresh, arty and comfortable. Owner Memo Wulff came over to say hi (as he did to every single table); I hadn’t seen him since he was cooking at El Dorado years and years ago. After dinner Mark, Dana and I strolled over to Plataforma 322, a performing arts theatre in Versalles featuring locally produced works in Spanish. We were attending the Perrobravo production of “el pequeño poni” starring Samantha Dueñas and Cesar Bravo. A synopsis, in English, of the play, was included in the program. For those of us who cannot track lightning-fast Spanish dialogue, it was a blessing. I know one couple who don’t speak any Spanish at all but went – and loved it – because of this extra bit of help that was provided. Thanks to Alain Perreault for making this effort on

our behalf. I am sure Paco Ojeda helped; Paco also did terrific things with video and the soundtrack. I hope this will set a standard for other companies in Vallarta including those that perform in English. If it’s worth producing, it’s worth producing program notes. The more that can be explained beforehand leaves time and energy to enjoy the acting and the heady experience of live theatre. I have to mention, also, the stage for “The Little Pony” was horseshoe-shaped, so three sides were the audience. We were so close I could have leaned over and wiped the tears off Jaime’s (Cesar’s) face. Go and immerse yourself in a well-written and directed play, Saturdays, March 9,16 and 30, at 8 pm. sday, the 14th; join me. Folks at Coco Tropical last Sunday were treated to an extra special concert. Rodolfo, the blindfrom-birth tenor, showed up to sing with his voice/keyboard coach Jean-Guy Comeau. The audience witnessed the debut of Rodolfo playing piano and accompanying himself on a few songs. His growth in the past year has been incredible thanks to the genius of Jean-Guy’s teaching and Rodolfo's ability to absorb new material like a sponge. What a great team they have turned out to be! All of us involved with “Friends of Rodolfo” in one way or another, send love and heartfelt wishes for a complete recovery to our ‘founder’ if you will, Skip Everett in California. Brain Patterns and Mindfulness Part One
W
hat does it really mean to be mindful? Being mindful is about being present and noticing reality as it is in each moment as it unfolds. It’s about tuning into reality as it is, as natural state of being. Unfortunately for most of us, we are rarely in the present moment. We are caught in the concepts of the past or what we want for the future. We are texting on the phone while eating breakfast, not paying attention to your food or perhaps who you are talking with. Then later in the day, you may have a difficult time remembering what you ate for breakfast! We are literally daydreaming… Oh sure, you can say that you tasted it, but did you really? Or, you have a conversation with someone while looking at your phone. Or perhaps thinking about what you
are going to say when others are talking. You’re simply not paying attention. This behavior is actually a state of mindlessness. It has often been referred to as the “monkey mind”. If you Google Monkey Mind you will find that it comes from Chinese Xinyuan and Sino-Japanese; a Buddhist term meaning “unsettled; restless; capricious; whimsical; fanciful; inconstant; confused; indecisive; uncontrollable”. Our minds continuously run non-stop! Neuro Science and Brain Patterns Our reality is perceived through a filter that allows us to see only what we have been conditioned to see. If you allow yourself to observe your mind and become a witness
being unique unto itself. Trillions of neural networks work together to create our creativity, along with new ideas of how we want ourselves to be and how we want to live our lives. They also serve us by keeping us alive and safe as they also recognize the patterns of our every changing environment. A neurotransmitter is a chemical substance that is released at the end of a nerve fiber by the arrival of a nerve impulse, and, by diffusing across the synapse or junction, causes the transfer of the impulse to another nerve fiber, a muscle fiber, or some other structure. This is how ”Neural Loops” are created, and is why you do or think the same thing over and over, even if it does not feel good. These neurons communicate across these synapses through the chemical transfers that blast from one cell to another with a bolt of electricity and do this throughout our brain like a crazy pinball machine. Each neuron sends and receives information to an astonishing 50,000 other neurons that are in a rapid-fire production. When you add it all up it amounts to 100 BILLION neurons X 50,000 connections. WOW! That is a staggering figure. There are more connections in a single human brain than stars in our galaxy. The result is a complex neural force of networks that form our personality, our identity, and our habits, with every single brain
to what is happening, you will discover that your mind is running continuous reactive loops over and over. We have become trapped by the neurology of our own brains without even knowing it! Every brain has an incredible unique pattern of neurons and connections. Some are learned over time and some are genetic. Every single one of us is wired differently. This neural-architecture of our brains tells us who and how we are going to act and react in the world. Every thought we have is the result of a network of billions of brain cells called neurons. Neurons are a specialized cell transmitting nerve impulses; a nerve cell. Unlike other cells in our bodies, neurons do not touch each other but are separated by microscopic spaces called synapses. A Synapse is a junction between two nerve cells, consisting of a minute gap across which

I

t's true! Your gut in recent years is being touted as your 'second brain.' According to Dr. Mark Hyman a leader in functional nutrition, this is what we should all be doing: 1. Eat whole, unprocessed, unrefined foods. One of the best ways to maintain gut health involves cutting out the sugar and refined carbs and jacking up gut-supporting fiber. 2. Make 75 percent of your plate be vegetables and plant-based foods. Your gut bugs really love these high-fiber plant foods. 3. Eat good fats and get an oil change. ots happening these days at the Tile Park! Hotel Posada de Roger’s bench is done, and it looks amazing! Last week we hosted yet another private workshop and completed another planter. And while that planter was getting done, our friend Judy brought plants for a couple of the others we just finished, so we had an impromptu garden party and now everything is 100% more awesome. In the blog this week we’ll be continuing our exploration of the park’s design, and talking with more people who have been integral in nurturing Parque Azulejos
to life. There are so many folks who have had a special hand in this project; we’re never short on inspiration from our friends. Choco has been making waves and people have been noticing. Rafa is skilled in design and also happy to help clean up after a hard days work. Our whole team works hard to support each other, and the fruits of our labor are the smiles we see when people stop by. Folks like Judy bring plants, and just put them in, because they see a need and they care. This project is all about community, and we love that people see what we’re doing and stop in to shake hands. The whole team loves it too… thank you! Keep doing that. It’s a huge inspiration to all of us.

Oscar-Winning Film Series, Lobo & Latcho’s
‘Primal Groove’, Zoe Lewis and Lady Zen Return to Incanto

ncanto and Democrats Abroad have added additional screenings of recent select Oscar-winning films, as well as the popular non-Oscar related films, ‘Active Measures’ and Fahrenheit 11/9. lthough he passed away in 2016, David Bowie's influence on the global entertainment scene cannot be overstated. His avant garde clothing, colourful make-up and hair styles, together with his leading edge music, exciting music videos, high tech staging concepts and energetic concert performances, set a new standard for showbiz style and flash. Born David Jones, in Manchester, England, the singer, songwriter and actor was a man of many faces, a chameleon who constantly changed and re-invented himself with fresh new music styles and looks. Ziggy Stardust, Alladin Sane, The Spiders From Mars were all part of the sounds and images that made David Bowie famous. And his music styles ranged from rock, to disco, to psychedelia, inclu-

Merv Buchanan, merv@uvs.com anadian Doug Varty is a professional guitarist, pianist, harmonica player, singer and songwriter. When he was 17, he joined the Canadian rock band Seadog and toured North America, opening for supergroups Rush, BTO and Canned Heat. Later, he led the house band at the Old Chicago blues club in London, Ontario, backing stars like Paul James, Edgar Winter, John Lee Hooker and The Fabulous Thunderbirds. An avid R'n'B fan, his raspy voice has always displayed a remarkable similarity to Rod Stewart's. In 1998, Doug was approached by veteran Canadian blues singers Chris and Geoff Dahl, aka The Soul Brothers, who were looking for a “Rod Stewart” for a national “Soul Men” tour. The trio knew of each other's work and it seemed like a natural fit. With his raspy voice and a spikey blonde wig, Doug became an important part of the team, helping to boost sales of their concert tickets from coast to coast. The Soul Men tour was a real eye opener for Doug. It taught him that he didn't need to drag tons of equipment around, or sweat over a guitar or keyboard, in order to entertain an audience. As Rod

Stewart, people would begin to cheer as soon as he walked up to a microphone. When the tour ended, he began to get offers from all over the the country to book “Rod” by himself. Do You Remember 1969?

arch 8, 2019, marks a milestone for me. I arrived to this beautiful and wacky world fifty years ago, destined to be the last, and no doubt, favourite child of my parents. I still feel like the baby. At seventy-five and nearly eighty years young, my loving parents are very active in travelling and socializing, and my two sisters treat me with thoughtful kindness. Yep, I am blessed. I am however, also turning fifty. I don’t feel fifty. Though, never experiencing it before, I’m not sure what it’s supposed to feel like. A new friend that I volunteer with was born between the years of my two son’s births. She is a lovely and brilliant young lady whom I enjoy spending my time with. A month ago I told her I have a big birthday coming up. “How big?”, she asked. I said BIG. Fifty. The sweet wee dear said, incredulously, “You’re only fifty?!”. “No”, I corrected, “I’m only forty-nine.” I don’t feel fifty, but I must look that, at least. With so many smart women now taking good care of themselves, there are plenty of older ladies who look younger than fifty. That is, younger than me. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, middle age is: “The period between early adulthood and old age, usually considered as the years from about 45 to 65.” Geeze. Middle age. How many people do you know who are one hundred? Let’s take a look back at some 1969 happenings: Sirhan Sirhan sentenced; Beatles’ “Get Back” is number one; Senator Ted Kennedy and the Chappaquiddick incident; Apollo 11 lands on the moon; the Manson murders; Nerf Balls and Big Wheels; Woodstock festival; Fritz the Cat; Rowan and Martin’s Laugh In, Here’s Lucy, Bonanza
and Gunsmoke; the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup, and the New York Mets were World Series champions. Big Movies included Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Midnight Cowboy and Valley of the Dolls. Price of a daily newspaper: 10 cents; Campbells Soup, 10.7 oz can: 10 cents; the world population was 3,591,000,000 (Currently 7.7 billion - United Nations, February 2019). Frank Sinatra recorded his signature song, “My Way”. I was born singing a similar tune, “From Now On We’ll All Do It My Way”. Here are two quotes from events in 1969, the second one of which you may not have heard: Neil Armstrong, upon stepping on the moon, “That’s one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind”, and, Bill Cosby won the Man of the Year award and jokingly suggested renaming the award “the nice guy as far as we know award”. Uh-huh, as far as we knew.
Of course, being an infant at the time, I have no early recollection of many of these things. I retrieved this information from the internet, so I know it’s all accurate, right? Now, for my benefit, let’s think of some things that are older than me: fire; the wheel; Queen Elizabeth; Easy-Bake Oven (Had one. Thank you, Santa), Etch-a-Sketch, Silly Putty, and Barbie, who still looks great in a bikini. Well, I don’t look the same in a bathing suit at fifty as I did at, say, twenty-two, but after five decades I am grateful for many other things. I have happy and successful children, I am retired at a young age, I live in paradise, and my best friend/husband and I enjoy good health and a good life, while still engaging in some naughty behaviour in the fun department now and then.

W
hen I was young and going off to the peace corps, among the few records we took with us to Chile were of Miles Davis and Nina Simone. We were treated by a friend to a live performance by John Coltrane in Harlem on our way out of the country. Being on the cusp of the Rock revolution we were still great jazz fans. Among my heroes of jazz this year are several who played important roles in promoting and protecting jazz during their lives and are probably largely unsung even by most jazz fans. Two of them are Charles Delaunay and Ira Sabin. Jazz recordings were very hard to come by in France at the time, as the music was mostly American. In 1934 with fellow enthusiast Hugues Panassie, Charles Delaunay founded Le Club Hot de France, a group of jazz fans dedicated to listening to and promoting the acceptance of traditional jazz, swing and blues in France. He became a great friend and fan of the now super famous Django
Reinhardt and encouraged and promoted him throughout his career. Delaunay’s recording studio Swing was the first recording company ever to dedicate itself exclusively to jazz. Without Delaunay, it might be said the world would not have known the music of Django Reinhardt and many others. When Ira Sabin was 14 and already an amateur drummer, a neighbor took him to New York on an errand and left him in a club while he conducted his business. It turned out both Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker were playing. Sabin was blown away. He had his musicians union card by age 16. Sabin later established a record store in Washington DC, Sabin’s Discount Records, that became a significant meeting place for jazz fans and musicians. He began writing a handout dealing with music and new record releases and was soon joined by music writers who contributed to an expanded effort called Radio Free Jazz which became the very popular Jazz Times and to which
Dizzy Gillespie was one of the first subscribers. During the period when jazz was being edged out by the British music invasion, his efforts were instrumental in keeping the music alive. The importance of those who make an effort to spread the joy of the music they love cannot be over estimated. Here in Puerto Vallarta we have many people supporting and promoting new music and certainly Doña Esther, (Teté to her friends) owner of Cuates y Cuetes is one of those individuals. When she was 13, she was turned on to music by her teacher and mentor Don Julio Cabrera. Fifteen years later in an open patio with one palm tree (which still stands as part of the present structure) and 20 tables in the same location of the present Cuates y Cuetes, she opened her restaurant/bar where she sang the first night. Her brother also played there in the beginning. Soon she added more music including Don Julio, Beverly y Willow and other well known musicians in the Puerto Vallarta area. Not only does Doña Esther provide great talent nightly the opportunity to play at her beachside restaurant but each year on March 21, this will be the 23rd jazz festival held on the beach in front of the restaurant. This is a free and fun event lasting all day and into the evening. In weeks surrounding the celebration the groups participating are featured at the restaurant/ bar where all enjoy an intimate performance by some of the best talent around. This years lineup is yet to be announced but will most certainly include regulars like Tatewari’s fiery flamenco, Faralae’s jazz manouche from Mexico City, the big band sounds of Proyecto Jorge “Tito” Rodriguez out of Monterrey, and Puerto Vallarta’s own Julio Cabrera. There will likely be some Spring Equinox goings-on by the Pier at one of the most iconic beach restaurant/bar/ musical destinations in Vallarta – Cuates y Cuetes. Friday, March 8, at the Vallarta Botanical Garden, the Vallarta Bird & Nature Festival opens and continues over the weekend. Closing ceremonies begin early afternoon at the Hall of Flowers at the Garden on Sunday, March 10. Saturday, March 9, River Café from 1 to 4 pm, one of the most important (and fun!) fundraisers of the season for Corazon de Niña. For details, please see their ad in this issue. Saturday, March 9, Incanto at 7 pm Doug Varty stars in a tribute to Rod Stewart. I saw this performance at El Rio two seasons ago and loved every minute of it. (Guess what I’m doing this Saturday night?) One of my favourite songs in the world is Maggie May. I happened to mention that to Doug in our informal interview before his performance at El Rio. Somehow, in that sea of humanity in the dark, he found me, knelt down and sang Maggie May to me. The expression “moved to tears” was made for moments like that and I have cherished it since and will forever. Tuesday, March 12, at Incanto at 4:30, join the Vallarta Garden Club for drinks on the river terrace and at 5 find out why bees are important. These short lectures are always informative and entertaining. It’s an excellent time to renew or buy
a membership to the VGC and help keep Vallarta beautiful. …and Goings An extraordinary sight to see every seat in Teatro Vallarta filled. The occasion was the single performance of Sleeping Beauty presented by the Bolshoi Ballet of Belarus. The Corps de Ballet was one of the finest I have ever seen – precision and grace with moments of sheer perfection with nary a finger out of place. The hours these ballerinas have to have spent rehearsing must be staggering to create such loveliness. Then add in travel time, language differences, our tropical heat, and sometimes vicious humidity; different surfaces to walk and dance on in an ice-cold air-conditioned theatre and to present such a classic marvel like it was no effort at all. Then take bows to a thousand people roaring their delight, pack up and move on to the next performance. I haven’t even gotten to the costume changes (Five? Six?) that were lightning fast and utterly beautiful. How do you transport these wispy, fragile pieces of clothing more than halfway around the world? To each and every person involved with this flawless performance on stage and off, including Sher Productions and Salvador Luna: Bravo. Just three months after seeing Bohemian Rhapsody – the movie, I was very interested in Johnny Zatylny’s tribute to Freddie Mercury and Queen at Incanto last week. He did not disappoint anyone in the nearly sold-out theatre at 3:00 in the afternoon on a sunny Sunday! The second set was full of everyone’s favourite Queen songs, and audience participation was encouraged although many did not need to be asked. A delicious couple of hours in the middle of the day. Thanks, Johnny for a stellar Mercury; please come back next year!

enowned flamenco group Tatewari has invited the talented and expressive vocalist Perla Alarcón to join them in their fifth concert of the season on March 11. This is not the first time Perla and Tatewari have entertained us together at the Tree House Bar and elsewhere over the years. Perla says she owes her life to music. She was already singing when she was two and at five had her debut on stage. She was 17 when she performed with her first rock band. Over her 30 years dedicated to music, she has created and sustained many successful groups including the house band for over five years at Bar Morelos, PROYECTO M. She traveled to Malaga where she recorded her CD Horizonte Azul. Simultaneously Perla has held an important position with the Municipality of Puerto Vallarta from which she just retired to focus on her music. You may have seen her last year at Mayofest where she was MC having played a major role in the entire production. Perla’s répertoire is vast. It includes the beautiful music from the movie Frida which portrayed the life of Frida Kahlo that she interprets with great feeling. A few years ago, together with Esau Galván, Dani Marquez and Alberto Ramirez of Tatewari was chosen to participate in the work Frida Kahlo by Adriana Quinto with Paolo Uccelli and Silvia Basurto of Boquita Vallarta here in Puerto Vallarta. The production was a huge success. This has been a very exciting
and productive year for the group Tatewari. They celebrated their 12th anniversary together with the release of their 4th CD in November and have performed impressive concerts both in Tree House Bar in La Cruz and Incanto’s Cabaret Theater in Puerto Vallarta. Tatewari takes an active role in community events such as Mayofest that is held in May in Puerto Vallarta and 12 years participation in the popular San Pancho Music Festival that is held the last weekend of February. Their music is made up of original compositions by Esaú Galván and other members of the group as well as their creative and beautiful renditions of classical and traditional Mexican pieces. Two Out of Three is Bad
H
as your husband ever hit you? Thrown you down the stairs? Threatened to re-arrange your face with a broken bottle? If not, and you live in Mexico, you have been lucky. Spousal abuse in Mexico is endemic. The latest (2016) Survey on the Dynamics of Relationships in Households, which measures violence against women in this country found that, across the country, 66 of every 100 women with a partner has suffered some form of abuse and violence throughout their relationship. In Puerto Vallarta 75% of these women are hurt physically and financially. Because of their injuries they are not well enough to work and, in
2016, it is estimated that each woman lost 30 days a year of paid work because of violence. That’s a whole month of wages! It gets worse. Spousal abuse has left millions of Mexican women single with children. Many move in with relatives to escape the aggression but many have nowhere to go. The Banderas Bay Women’s Shelter provides a refuge in this area for a few of these families. It accepts women and children who have been referred to them from DIF (the social services department of the federal government), the Justice Centre for Women, The Women´s Institute, the Secretary of Health and from other shelters across the country. All of the women have been subject to “extreme” domestic violence and their lives are endangered.

laze is a gorgeous and joyful dog. He is 5 to 6 years old, a Vizla mix weighing a tad over 50 pounds. He has a medium energy level and is good around female dogs. Mostly Blaze just wants to be with his people. He loves getting attention from his humans and prefers to play with his two-legged friends. He doesn’t get along with felines, however. He
suffers an old fracture to his hip and knee but he walks fine and without a limp. However, he will probably need glucosamine supplements on a continual basis. Blaze has been neutered, dewormed and vaccinated. He is now ready for his forever home and we are accepting applications for his adoption at spcapv@gmail.com.
Although the demand is great, the local shelter can handle only 6 – 8 families at one time or, perhaps, 24 to 32 a year. The average stay is about three months but individual families may need more than that. Typically a woman arrives with three children but, if she is indigenous, that number is likely to be five. According to David Zude, the President of the organization that runs the shelter, it provides for all of the needs of the families; food, hygiene, clothing, medical care, social worker services, professional services of psycho-
logists and legal services. While the shelter is helped by grants from the federal government it needs private funding to cover the shortfall. This is the only women’s shelter in this part of the country and a woman and her family, who cannot get in here, have to go to Guadalajara, a five-hour bus ride from here. Many times that is simply impossible and they end up back on the streets. The Banderas Bay Women’s Shelter is registered as a 501c3 charity in the USA. You can make donations through www.

We are bracing for the influx of tourists for the Easter holiday season, including those nationals who arrive to enjoy our beautiful paradise. This is the calm before the storm! Inspired in La Cruz; Shari writes five books!

njoying my latest book I decided to interview the author who was inspired to write… and then wrote and wrote and wrote right here in Vallarta! Shari Decter Hirst has a beaming smile and a heart of gold. I first met her and her wonderful husband, Derry, when they stayed at our Boutique Hotel, six years ago. They quickly fell in love with La Cruz; the people, the area, the food, the history, the music, the ocean, the weather and the cost of living. Not long after they bought a house here. Shari shared “It started out as a quick vacation somewhere warm, or at least that’s what my husband thought; I had an ulterior motive of scouting possible retirement spots and was attracted to the easy access from Canada, the ocean, and the locale. At least one of us became snowbirds… hubby still has a day job, alas.” Far from lazy Shari volunteers “The strong sense of community was one of the things that attracted us to La Cruz. Being involved whether beach clean up, helping with the Amigos de La Cruz dental clinics, or children’s Christmas festivities is part of building a strong community together.” Shari adopted two little street pups and when in La Cruz all three wander the malecon and around town. She loves movie night at the marina, the Sunday Market, watching the sun set from her rooftop patio while sipping vino blanco. At crossroads and suddenly retired Shari was casting about for what the next chapter of her life would look like. “Sitting in a great little jazz club in Bucerias the music inspired me to dream about the Roaring Twenties, flappers, bootleggers, and all that jazz. Like many voracious readers, I have always

wanted to write a book. With great trepidation, I put fingers to keyboard and began. Thank goodness for a great writing group in the area, with their input and the skill and coaching from a great editor, the Bootleggers’ Chronicles series was born. I love telling stories. There are five novels in the Bootleggers’ Chronicles and they were planned out before I started writing. I needed to know where I was headed before I could start the journey. That’s not to say there weren’t surprises along the way, but the story always stayed true to the premise of the book. A quote by Martin Luther King, Jr. “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” Writing as Sherilyn Decter creating a good story that readers will enjoy inspires her. “Finding the right
words that let the reader escape the day-to-day, if only for a few hours.” Shari told me that this past year has been a rollercoaster. Dealing with the challenges of learning to write and finishing a compelling scene and sitting back thinking ‘yes, that’s it’. Highlights for sure are getting her books published on Amazon. ‘Innocence Lost’, book one of the Chronicles was released in February, there are two more in the series coming March 21st, and book four in April and book five in May. She was delighted seeing her books in her local public library and when the gas station attendant said he was reading ‘Innocence Lost’ and thought it was pretty good! ife in Vallarta provides an abundance of afternoon music, most of it accessible via any Centro bus. The Babel Bar, located on the River Cuale provides music all week from 1 – 3 pm and then early evening music at 6:30 pm. They feature a variety of solo and duo acts performing a wide range of music. Now, for my regularly sche-
duled rock music updates. Blake’s Restaurant and Bar, on the Centro bus route, near Los Glorias, is an awesome place for afternoon music. Wednesday and Saturday, starting around 2:30 pm, Trez Cuartoz rocks the street with jam sessions, and Fridays at 2:30 pm Soul Trip brings their funk, rock, blues, and harmonica, and hosts visiting musicians. I saw The Prophets on Sunday, and they are worth a second look. El Rio BBQ holds afternoon and early evening music. Check out the Tribune’s Live Music calendar online or in the paper for a list of who plays when at El Rio. Moving away from the afternoon, there is a selection of early evening music. Café Roma features music from 6 - 9 pm Thursday, with Ana and The Others and then Fridays from 6 – 9 pm with Tequila Rush. My favorite meal is the calzone. Don’t forget El Oasis de Holi, near La Isla Mall. Sunday at 5 pm, Ana and The Others rock this beachside location. Special Rock Event: All the venues above feature a mix of rock music, and styles. However, one of Vallarta’s top bands has a special event planned. They have promised there will be no “Brown Eye Girl”, or “Who is Alice”! Tequila Rush is performing a Led Zeppelin 50 th Anniversary Tribute at The Roxy Rock House, March 16, at 11 pm. It will include TWENTY wellknown LZ songs. Tickets are one hundred pesos in advance, one hundred thirty at the door, available at the Roxy, or from Tequila Rush thru their FB page. Tequila Rush, one of the top bands in the bay, commands a great stage presence, with their ability to play a large selection of songs well. Many bands have signature songs, not Tequila Rush, all their songs are “top shelf” and they are one of the few bands around who could pull off a Led Zeppelin, 50 th Anniversary Tribute. rtists from across the Banderas Bay region are coming together to support Puerto Vallarta’s Corazón de Niña children’s home in an “Artists for Orphans” fundraiser Saturday, March 9th, 1:00–4:00 p.m. The event will be held at the River Café restaurant on Isla Rio Cuale, beneath the Ignacio Vallarta Bridge, in Puerto Vallarta. Their art — more than 60 paintings, watercolors, ceramics, sculpture, mixed media, and more — will be available for sale, with all of the proceeds supporting the home’s nearly 80 children, from toddlers to high-schoolers. The Artists for Orphans fundraiser will feature live music
