TIME ZONE: The entire state of Jalisco is on Central Time, as is the southern part of the State of Nayarit starting from Lo de Marcos in the north.

EXPORTING PETS: Falling in love with the street dog outside your hotel is easy to do and it’s also easy to bring them home with you too. The process is inexpensive and only takes a day or two. BUSES: A system of urban buses with different routes can bring you from one end of the bay to the other and all the spots in between. If you’re going further than San Pancho, head to the main bus terminal to catch a ‘Pacifico’ bus. Current fare is 10.00 pesos. TAXIS: There are set rates within defined zones of town. Do not enter a taxi without agreeing on the price with the driver first. Make a note of the taxi number in case you leave something behind. Drivers typically do not carry change. UBER: New in 2017 to Puerto Vallarta, Uber is still experiencing some growing pains particularly in the state of Nayarit. Uber is about 25-50% cheaper than a taxi, but this is subject to change. The benefits of using Uber are set fares and the ability to follow up directly with your driver if there is an incident or you leave an item behind. MONEY EXCHANGE: Typically a bank will give you a higher rate of exchange than the exchange booths (Caja de Cambio). You will need your passport. Better yet, use your bank card to withdraw funds from any ATM. Note that ATM’s in the banks are the safest to use and charge lower fees. DRINKING WATER: While Puerto Vallarta’s water has been awarded a certification of purity for

COMMON SENSE: Just as you wouldn’t walk around your hometown drunk and belligerent, it is not acceptable to do that here. While Mexico is a tolerant culture, basic politeness is appreciated. Don’t pee in the streets. Don’t flash your money or expensive gadgets. Pay attention to your surroundings. Know where you are going. Pay your bills (and don’t forget to tip). And have fun! DRINKING AND DRIVING: First off – just don’t. The consequences are not worth it. Taxis or Ubers are cheap and plentiful. Fines are as much as 12,000 pesos. You can be taken to jail and your vehicle impounded. There are many checkstops on the weekends, and you will be asked to blow if they suspect you have been drinking. LEGAL SYSTEM: Not knowing the law is not a valid excuse in Mexico, or anywhere. If you find yourself caught in a legal situation be aware that guilt is presumed until your innocence can be proven. This is a very difficult lesson to learn if you are visiting from the United States or Canada. Immediately contact your consulate for assistance.

CALLING IN MEXICO Calling phones in Mexico can be tricky. There are different codes you need to use depending if you are calling landlines or cellular phones and if they are local or long distance. LONG-DISTANCE CALLS FROM WITHIN MEXICO For national long-distance calls (within Mexico) the code is 01 plus the area code and phone number. For international long-distance calls, first dial 00, then the country code (U.S. and Canada country code is 1), so you would dial 00 + 1 + area code + 7 digit number. CALLING CELL PHONES (FROM A LAND LINE) If you are calling from a landline within the area code of the Mexican cell phone number dial 044, the 10 digit number. Outside of the area code (but still within Mexico) dial 045 and then the 10 digit phone number. Cell phone to cell phone only requires the 10 digit number. CALLING TOLL-FREE NUMBERS Some toll free numbers work from Mexico to the US and Canada, but many do not. Those that do work are often not toll-free. You need to dial a different prefix. f you’re a regular reader of my weekly column, you probably know how relieved I am in the coming end of high season and not because I want you all to go home, but because I want to go too! And I can’t leave until you do! But I can take the weekend off and head to my favourite spot in Chacala. It was amazing. I read at least 50 pages of a book! I barely glanced at my phone. I remembered to use sunscreen! All in all, a great success! Now I’m back, rested and restored; and finishing up Chapter Two edits for my travel guide. Only five more chapters to go… laaaaaa [shining light at the end of the tunnel] aaaaaaah. With Semana Santa (Easter break from April 14-20) happening so late in the season we have this weird time of indecision. As people head back to their summer homes, it begins to feel a little empty, but

a quick stroll along the Malecon or Olas Altas and it’s clear many have opted to stick around for a couple weeks longer. The event and entertainment pages are just as full as ever, but many of our seasonal advertisers are done for the season. So we’ve cut back on a few pages. It might not seem like a lot but those eight pages add a ton of extra weight, and the delivery guys are thankful to see the newspaper drop a few pounds. A couple of housekeeping notices: 1. In the fall the Vallarta Tribune will offer a subscription service to condominiums and hotels/resorts for a small fee. If you are a regular reader who has trouble finding a copy each week – consider speaking to your condo manager or resort concierge and let them know they will be able to bulk order copies weekly beginning November 1, 2019. 2. Certificates and door stickers are on the way out to the winners of the Best of Banderas Bay Reader’s Choice. If you’re a winner and you haven’t received your notice, let me know, and I’ll make an effort to get it to you quickly. 3. We are (really) launching a new website in about 4 weeks. I need a few keen eyes to give it a thorough going over towards the end of April. If you are up for the challenge, let me know. I would appreciate the assistance. Mexico’s Dia del Taco (Taco Day) is nearly upon us. On Sunday, March 31, skip breakfast, put on those stretchy shorts and head

to the Lazaro Cardenas Park in Old Town where you can sample dozens of tacos, enjoy a few beverages, listen to some live music. It’s basically everything you love in one spot. And it’s free. Incanto, Act II, El Rio continue to offer live music, theater and general good times. You can find all those details in the back pages of this week’s Tribune. 200 students of Nayarit benefit with improvements to their school

ast week the financial group Principal Mexico, through its support program to local communities ‘Dejando Huella’ (Leaving Handprints), delivered to the San Clemente community of Lima hugely improved school Ali Chumacero to the benefit of 200 students. The improvements included construction of 2 classrooms including the electrical installation and air conditioning, as well as all the necessary desks and other furniture to be used in the classrooms. In addition, a multipurpose playground was built with basketball and soccer, and a playground with swings and slides. “The goal of Dejando Huella, is to guarantee that students from the communities where we operate have sufficient and quality educational facilities at their disposal so

that they can develop their skills and access better living conditions,” said Luis Valdés, president of Principal International. In the ribbon cutting ceremony, several directors of Principal Mexico, as well as local authorities, and the ex-football player Francisco “Kikín” Fonseca, who provided color commentary during a football match of the students on the new field. The Ali Chumacero School has been providing primary education since its foundation in 2010, and currently has 201 students between 6 and 12 years of age in the morning

shift. In its beginnings, it only had capacity for 68 students, in mobile classrooms, until in 2012 the Parents Association got the support of the local and educational authorities for the construction of three classrooms and the bathrooms. “This school has the clear mission of providing integral education that contributes to the formation of human beings with solid values and ready to face the rest of their future, and we feel very fortunate to be able to support them to have the necessary infrastructure to do it.”, concluded Valdés.

Mexicans Raise a Glass to Breaking Volaris Opens Two New World Record for Largest Tequila Tasting Flights To Vallarta-Nayarit

exicans broke the Guinness World Record for the largest tequila tasting in the world in the city where it was created. Almost 1,500 people toasted in unison and sipped on the alcoholic drink in Guadalajara. The merry mass sipped on the various samples of the distilled drink using fluted glasses. No sooner had the party-goers finished a drink they all belted out a toast of “Salud” in unison. As the party progressed, people started breaking into song and together sang “Cielito lindo,” a popular 19th-century Mexican song, as Tapatios celebrated their achievement together. “We did it! We did it!” people could be heard yelling jovially as they shook their neckerchiefs and raised their glasses. The party wrapped up with mariachi music, as Jalisco established itself as the cradle of tequila, for the time being at least.

T Tequila is Jalisco’s gift to the world and this record represents Mexicanness, Francisco Javier Soltero vice-president of the National Chamber of the Tequila Industry said. The huge tasting session took place in the city center with the 17th century Guadalajara cathedral and the Teatro Degollado as the backdrop to the event.

Partially filmed in Puerto Vallarta and featuring local actors, the film will be shown in Venice at the First International Hermetic Film Festival on the 7th of March as part of a double-bill gala on opening night; and again on March 26 at the TLC Chinese Theater in Hollywood as an official selection of the Golden State Film Festival. The film, which was shot in multiple locations, from Greece to India to Mexico, as well as at home-base in the Laurentians, stars Algis himself, Nina Korey and Paul William Roberts. Algis Kemezy often has featured photography on the cover of the Vallarta Tribune. Byron Ayanoglu had a column in the newspaper in 2018. emana Santa is fast approaching! The municipal government in Puerto Vallarta is busy preparing family friendly events to be enjoyed over the two-week holiday. The city will set up four stages on the Malecón, where people will be able to enjoy free entertainment, including traditional Mexican dance, live music, circus shows and more. Jackfruit Vegan Pozole

ho doesn’t love Mexican comfort food? Traditional pozole has always been one of my favorites growing up. Now as a plant-based eater it’s

one of those soups that I often crave, but due to recent injuries, have not had the time to make at home. Last weekend, however, on a trip to Guadalajara, I was very excited to try a vegan Mexican restaurant called “La Flaca.” The menu at this place was impressive. They had menudo,

tortas ahogadas, birria, setas en su jugo, sopa de tortilla, different vegan tacos and of course pozole on the menu. I was over the moon excited about trying many of my Mexican favorites. Here is vegan pozole recipe that has received good reviews just in case you want to try it yourself. We are lucky because jackfruit grows in abundance here in Puerto Vallarta. Total Time 40 minutes Servings 6 servings Ingredients 1 can (29 oz.) White hominy, drained, rinsed 3 quarts Vegetable Stock 5 Chile guajillo, dried, stemmed and seeded 2 Chile ancho, dried, stemmed and seeded 5 Chile de árbol, dried, stemmed and seeded 6 cloves Garlic

½ Onion, white 1 tbsp. Vegetable oil (optional) 2 cans (20oz./ea) Young green jackfruit brine, drained or 2 cups natural jackfruit 1 Zucchini, medium, cut into dice Toppings 1 White onion, small, minced 6 Red radishes, sliced into batons 2 tbsp. Oregano, dried ½ Green cabbage, cored, thinly sliced 4 Limes cut into quarters 1 bag Corn chips or tostadas Preparation In a large pot, combine the vegetable stock and hominy and bring to a LOW simmer. While the hominy is simmering, remove stems and seeds from the chile ancho, arbol, and guajillo. Rinse and place in a medium pot with water. Bring pot to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 min. Drain chiles, but reserve 1 ½ cups of the chile water. Place chiles, garlic and onion in the blender, add the chile water and blend until smooth. Strain. To prepare the jackfruit, drain the jackfruit, rinse, and pat with paper

towels. Cut out the core of the jackfruit (tip of the triangle pieces), and cut pieces in half. Heat 1 tbsp. of oil in a large sauté pan set to medium heat. Add the jackfruit and cook for 3 -4 minutes on each side or until it begins to brown. Pour the chile sauce over the jackfruit and reduce heat to low-medium. Simmer for 10 minutes or until jackfruit begins to break down and the sauce has thickened slightly. Use a fork to shred the jackfruit as it cooks down. Season with salt and pepper. Your hominy should still be simmering very slowly. Scoop out one cup of the hominy-vegetable stock mixture and blend until smooth. Pour this back into the pot with the hominy Raise heat to medium-low, and add the zucchini and shredded jackfruit with sauce. Let simmer for 8- 10 minutes or until the zucchini is tender. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve your pozole with all of the toppings on the side. These are the thoughts that cross my mind every Friday afternoon, when it comes time to lead a group of locals to lunch once more. All week I woke up with burgers on my mind, and so I decided to lead the expedition to Derby City’s new location on Rodolfo Gomez to both do my job and get my fix. The Vibes: We rolled up to the restaurant on yet another beautiful day in Vallarta to select our seats in the open air dining space. The lunch crowd was beginning to fill up the area, but fortunately we arrived just in time to get the last big table so no one had to eat their meal from their laps like some kind of animal. Once seated, we had some time to appreciate the setting. Foot traffic bustled on the streets outside the entrance while a slight breeze took the edge off the midday temperature, which has changed from almost chilly to semi-summertime in the space of about two weeks. Faint music wafted in from a celebration nearby…the scene was ideal for an outdoor meal. Displaying outstanding social skills, every member of our party convincingly pretended to be more interested in conversation than the menu which included tempting possibilities from the bold and

tangy Bluegrass BBQ topped with onion rings to the always alluring chili cheeseburger. Eventually all the proper pleasantries were exchanged, and we could each narrow the choices down...there would be plenty of time to chat after our orders were placed. The Vices: During my initial scouting session--yes, I often visit these places more than once before writing about them, it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make for my readers--I went with a limited-time special which may or may not still be available for request off-menu, a buffalo chicken sandwich topped with caramelized onions, bacon, and a healthy scoop of mac and cheese.

It’s too damn good to only be available sometimes, and I hope management considers this a formal petition for its permanent addition. In any event, this time I decided on the Black & Blue burger, combining a specially seasoned patty with one of my favorite multipurpose toppings, bacon. Also, blue cheese, obvio. People either love or hate the sharp and salty punch of this controversial cheese, but I generally can’t get enough of the stuff. Fortunately, they were not stingy with the signature ingredient, something of a pleasant surprise when I have heard other business owners complain about the cost of providing unlimited limes. The burger came with a side of crispy golden fries--which I could have exchanged for sweet potato fries or a salad, but I decided to stick with the classic combination. No one even complained about me B’ing my own B to the restaurant, a consideration I typically reward by purchasing another. By the time everyone had cleaned their plates, it was another successful afternoon of social coordination...it’s a harder job than it seems, but just barely. The Verdict: This sunny Olas Altas eatery is named for its roots in Louisville, home to the worldfamous horse race, and with a wide range of tasty burgers, the outstanding eating experience follows in the tradition of the city’s champions. In this writer’s opinion, Derby City is one of the region’s finer exports, garnering a personal ranking somewhere between major league baseball bats and Muhammad Ali. Maybe I’ll catch you there. couple of weeks ago, one of my neighbors in Mexico contacted me on Whatsapp to ask if I knew the number of a reputable tow service that could assist him with a flat tire. He said that he wasn’t able to get the lug nuts off and that he and his wife were stranded on the side of the highway. I recommended that he save his money and call Los Ángeles Verdes (The Green Angels) to assist him. To which he responded, “Who?” Before my neighbors could even call, a couple of Green Angels rolled up and jumped into action. Whether you're experiencing mechanical issues, get lost without a map, or need medical assistance that doesn't require a hospital, the Green Angels are a good resource for any traveler in Mexico. You can request help from the Green Angels by dialing 078 from any phone in Mexico, and agents will come to your location to assist with car repairs, provide first aid, or offer information about road conditions, tourist attractions, emergency services, and crime assistance. The phone operators are bilingual and can point you to the best action to take or other resources that may be helpful to you.

Green Angels patrol all federal and toll highways in Mexico and offer free assistance in the case of a breakdown, accident, or medical emergency. They are knowledgeable about road conditions and can provide basic tourist services. The Green Angels are funded by Mexico's Secretary of Tourism. They have over 300 vehicles that patrol an average of 60,000 kilometers of Mexican highways every day and over 22 million kilometers each year. The Green Angels offer the following services: • Guidance and information about destinations, state and regional tourist attractions, and services in the area • Mechanical assistance and emergency radio support • Assistance in the case of accidents • Assistance to the general public in the case of disasters The Green Angels are trained in auto mechanics and carry tools and spare parts so they can perform emergency or temporary repairs, such as changing tires, dealing with an overheated engine, or replacing a gas pump. They can help you arrange to have your car towed if more extensive repairs are required.

Trained in CPR, the Green Angels can administer first aid in the event of an accident or medical emergency. They can also help you contact local hospitals and emergency support services and can perform necessary life-sustaining medical treatment in certain situations until medical support arrives. You can contact the Green Angels by dialing 078 from any phone in Mexico. The operator will transfer your call to the dispatch service, who will then communicate via radio with a unit in your area. The 078 phone number is a 24-hour hotline that you can call for telephone assistance at any time. If you don't have access to a phone, just pull over and put your car's hood up. When the Green Angels pass on their regular rounds, they will stop to offer you assistance. The Angeles Verdes service is only in operation from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, so you will not be able to flag down a car overnight and may have to wait an extended time for dispatch to connect you with a service member. Also keep in mind that the Ángeles Verdes service is only offered on major highways and toll roads, so if you choose to travel on the free roads (carreteras libres), you're on your own. f you don't have much time but you want to build strength, try "isometrics". Isometrics is the art of contracting a muscle without changing its length. The bones attached to the muscle do not move either. Press your hands together in prayer position as hard as you can for 10 seconds. This is an isometric workout for the chest, shoulders, and arms. Place your interlaced hands behind your head at the base of the skull (occipital ridge). Press your head into your hands and your hands into your head. Don't move. You will be strengthening your neck muscles. Some movements in your yoga or pilates practice are isometric. The stretches that your dog or cat do are isometric. Muscles get stronger when you challenge them to produce more force than they are used to. An isometric exercise activates muscle fibers with equal force in both directions. You get stronger by the effort of trying to move. Repeat an isometric move several times a day. Your strength in the targeted area will improve dramatically. Isometric exercises take off inches from your waist. They may even decrease high blood pressure.

Pause and hold somewhere along the range of movement for a few seconds. Tighten your muscle as much as you can. Keep breathing naturally. And keep your contraction to 10 seconds. Isometric exercises only increase muscle strength in the exact position you are holding. Not the entire range of motion. Supplement them with other strength training. Isometrics are not for everybody. They restrict blood flow and can cause a rise in blood pressure. They can be unsafe if you have heart disease or high blood pressure. Or if you are pregnant. If you fall into one of these categories, check with your doctor first. If you experience unusual symptoms (headache, nausea, or dizziness), stop. Check with your doctor. Here is an isometric exercise that will help strengthen your neck muscles.

SEATED ISOMETRIC NECK STRETCHES 1. Sit or stand in good posture. 2. Interlace your fingers. Place your hands behind your head at the base of the skull (occipital ridge). 3. Press your head into your hands and your hands into your head. 4. Hold for up to 10 seconds. Listen to your body. 5. Now stack your hands at your forehead with your palms facing away from your forehead. 6. Press your forehead into your hands and your hands into your forehead. 7. Hold for up to 10 seconds. 8. Now place your right hand on or near your left ear. 9. Press your hand into your head and your head into your hand. 10. Hold for up to 10 seconds. 11. Repeat with your left hand on or near your right ear. Summing Up: You can exercise without moving by adding isometric exercises to your practice. Do them anytime and anywhere. Have fun!

would like to begin this article with deep gratitude. There was so much more I wanted to write about in the last three segments about “Neural Science” and our state of being. More about genes, more about breath, more about the mind body, remembering who you really are; there is always so much more. I only have so much room in my weekly articles. And so I give gratitude, first, to my beautiful and amazing editor, Madeline, for this opportunity to write every week; and for stretching it at times! Thank you! I give gratitude to a very long list of mentors and teachers who have enlightened my life in so many ways and teaching me how to consciously expand my consciousness by focusing inside, creating well being; as I create my destiny here on earth. I give gratitude to myself, as I continue to DO the work of focusing inside myself and continue learning from others that have come before me. I also hold gratitude, and honor, to be a teacher and mentor and empowering others to live a life of love, health and happiness. This is my life’s path. Creating New Beliefs What would you like to create today? What would be your pure, focused intention? When we want to create an unlimited belief we must feel unlimited. To empower a new belief is to become empowered.

Why not take a chance? Raise your energy. Raise it through the roof! Create happiness. Create health. Radiate the belief around you.

Breathe it in; feel it; walk with it. And then surrender it to a greater consciousness. It must manifest in space and time first; that is the ‘Law of Attraction’. Bless your body and life. Place your focus on the space inside your chest; your heart. Ask Divine to enter. And then give gratitude. Gratitude is the energy of receiving. Be OPEN to receive what you create. Live consciously and create more happiness and health than you ever thought possible. After, all, in the quantum field, how many potentials are there? You guessed it: Unlimited potentials. Be consciousness of what you let in, as this becomes your destiny. We are powerful creative beings of light and love. Most of us have simply forgotten. I am here to assist in the letting go, the creating, and the remembering of who you truly are. I cannot DO this for you, but I can lead the way, making it easier to walk on the path. As everything unravels on the planet, a new consciousness is also coming into place. This is my soul’s path and why I am here now living this life. Long-time columnist Marcia Blondin resurrects this preview/review column each season devoted to local entertainment that she has had the pleasure of seeing lately or in seasons past.

am starting this week’s column with two huge shout-outs to my colleagues here at the Tribune: First up – Leigh Thelmadatter, who has just published her first book! Brava, brava! A couple of years ago, Leigh saw a photo on Facebook of a piece of jewelry that I made and asked if she could include me and it in her blog about Artists in Mexico. Who could say no to that! No, I am not in her new book; it’s called “Mexican Cartoneria,” the history of paper mache and will be widely available in November 2019. She is, however, talking about doing another so, who knows? I hope you sell a million copies, Leigh! Second up is John Warren. He does all the publicity for the International Friendship Club and is extremely active in their charitable gifts program. Last summer, while on hiatus from IFC writings, John did a fantastic series in the Tribune about what all the street names in Old Town meant and/or who they came from, depending. I wanted to write and thank him for over a year and just haven’t. Something else came up and badda-bing, we ended up face to face over blackberry smoothies at the Vallarta Cigar Factory for a good, old-fashioned gabfest. I knew we would become fast friends and two hours flew away. We talked mostly about charity(ies) and how the IFC determines who gets what and why. A most significant point came up twice in one week: the Banderas Bay Women’s Shelter. The IFC is the ONLY reliable source of monthly income. Yes, they receive funding from the federal government, but the new President of Mexico has said he will cut off all shelters in the entire country. That hasn’t happened yet, but Founder/ Director David Zude has to start looking at other revenue sources. The annual fundraiser, “What a Drag” was a huge success

again this year, but it is the only fundraiser the shelter has. I met David Zude this past weekend at a lovely house party/ fundraiser where monies were actively solicited for Corazon de Niña, Cheryl’s Shoebox and the Banderas Bay Women’s Shelter. I should have the figures next week. What is sorely needed are monthly donors and corporate sponsors if any of you feel so inclined, get in touch with me, and I will pass your information on. I believe my new friend John Warren is writing about violence against women in Mexico in his column this week. Have a read and help any way you can. This was the third year David and Jim have thrown a little party. The first one was to inaugurate their new home, and a few pesos were collected for their fave charities. Last year the party grew and so did the donations. This year included gifts of clothes and shoes to go where they are most needed. Again Juanito tended bar as only he can – unflappable and always smiling. Martin played and sang; you can hear him every Friday at the Marsol Market. Paul Aleman, fresh from his solo debut at Incanto played and sang a few songs. Many of us were at his fabulous opening night performance. Other entertainers included a brilliant young tenor named Alejandro Peña, and Stolie. Everyone brought a brunch-y dish and cash. We ate well, drank lots and caught up with friends we haven’t had time to see all season long. Thank you, David Wilhoit and Jim Davis, for your wonderful hospitality and to everyone there who helped make the party great and an even more significant contribution to those in need. I am the preschool coordinator and nursery teacher at the American School of Puerto Vallarta. I am also both unsurprised and not a bit sorry that this list of my favorites is mostly about places to eat. If you can live in Vallarta without appreciating some of the good eatin’ around here, you have to be at least half Vulcan.

When Family is Far Away

hen you change countries, you come to understand many things about your country of birth that you weren’t conscious of when you were actually living there. For example, I realized that I wasn’t taking enough time for myself as I could have, because I thought the whole point of living was working for stuff I didn’t need. I came to understand that the road rage I was experiencing was NOT because of the other drivers being so incompetent (I mean, mostly not), but from the stress from trying to keep up with an unattainable standard of living. And, after one full winter with no actual snow, I realized that I didn’t have arthritis OR bursitis OR chronic dissatisfaction as I had previously suspected. I was just really, really cold. But, one of the most important things I came to know was this: you never fully appreciate easy access to your family until it’s gone. Most significantly, it’s the ability to call the grandparents to come and take your kids for ice cream when it gets to be Too Much. Like when your son asks you exactly seventy questions in one hour about The Flash. Like when your daughter tells you she won’t put on any socks with a line on the top. Like when you make dinner and you KNOW it’s their favorite food, except they just changed their minds and now it’s their least favorite food because the broccoli is touching it. I can’t really spend much time complaining about it for two main reasons: My husband and I chose to live in Mexico and raise our family, far from our own immediate families My parents stay with us all winter Yes, you heard that right. Every winter my parents lock up their cozy home in Manitoba and move in with us in Puerto Vallarta for at least

three months. And, while it might sound to you all like a great deal for them (free lodging in a tropical paradise doesn’t sound much like a punishment), you might want to get a bit of context before you decide who really got the shiny, sparkly end of the stick. Moving in with our family is like moving in with a flock of chickens. Everyone is going in a different direction, we all talk at once, and we leave our mess wherever we drop it. We are not the easiest bunch to settle in with. But my parents have done it ever since our children were born. When the kids were tiny, my mom and dad would change them, rock them, prepare bottles, take them on long walks, and play with them for hours. When they were school age, they’d take them to the park, feed them their favorite meals (and laugh off the inevitable food touching dilemma), and play their favorite board games. They have always had a huge hand in all the daily parts of their lives. Nowadays, they patiently wait out the moody adolescent moments in order to have casual conversations over meals, homework and the occasional outing. They show up for them when they perform in recitals or talent shows, and hang out at practices and school events for hours. They give their time and their attention so freely, so easily, to kids who have come to expect it, because it’s all they’ve known. So sometimes it seems like our kids aren’t conscious of the sacrifice and commitment my parents have made so that my children can grow up with grandparents, because, to my kids, this is regular life. But I know that they make sacrifices in order to be part of our lives here in Mexico. And I see the impact of all these days, hours, and minutes doing the daily, mundane tasks that we can all take for granted sometimes. Thank you to the best Nana and Papa, who have helped raise some pretty great Mexican/Canadian kids.

Comings… Thursday, March 28 at Incanto, the third season Opening Night for the Vallarta Vocalista Ensemble. This brilliant octet of local expats rehearses all year round to perform six concerts; guaranteed to be unlike anything else you’ve heard. Ever. Nearly all the singers are also musicians, many playing multiple instruments and they all contribute their ideas to the playlist which changes annually. This year, their invited guest is gorgeous Patsy Meyer lending her powerful voice to the ensemble. Patsy will also play percussion in a few numbers. Join me Thursday at 7 pm, for the Vocalista’s eagerly anticipated first show. Friday, March 29 at The Palm Cabaret, I am going to see Jimmy James in his new show that will also include a bit of Fashionista that we saw late last year. I am so excited to see him again. I remember standing outside the Palm talking with Bill Makley and others in December – all of us dumbfounded by Jimmy’s show. His impersonations are downright spooky. Catch Jimmy at The Palm before the end of next week. Saturday, March 30, at Meño’s Place, to hear Vallarta’s favorite now not-roving tenor, Rodolfo. I am going for dinner at this new resto in 5 de diciembre at Honduras 348. The setting is beautiful, high up with views of the Bay of Banderas. I was delighted to see Meño again after his many years at Café de Olla. He is doing well, the resto is busy, and it’s time to taste his food. I know the entertainment will be fabulous and I’ll have a full report next week on everything else. For reservations call 322 222 7549. Sunday, March 31, at Coco Tropical from 6 to 8:30 pm, Rodolfo’s final concert this season; he has come a long, long way. See you there for the best pepper steak in Vallarta. Tuesday, April 02, at Incanto, at 7 pm. Speaking of tenors… Alejandro Peña has one show, only. This young Pata Salada, formally trained in Nayarit, has returned to his hometown to show his city

what he has learned. Alejandro sang a couple of songs at a house party this past weekend, then I put in a request for ‘Nessum Dorma,’ a favorite aria of mine from Turandot. He apologized he did not have the music with him. Disappointed, I went back to stand next toJulie Guerrero, who has Alejandro entertaining at No Way Jose. A minute later, Alejandro began Nessum Dorma a cappella. Julie said he would make me cry with his magnificent voice and he did. I really want to hear more of this young man. You’ll find me at Incanto for his debut, April 2. …and Goings After a dazzling matinee tribute to David Bowie, Jeremy Wright returned to Incanto with fellow Canadian Tyler Dadswell as McCartney and Lennon respectively. For the “Music of the Beatles,” Jeremy shone on bass guitar and keyboards; Tyler inspiring as John in granny glasses playing one of Lennon’s fave guitars. Days later Jeremy and Tyler were joined by Nik Hirst on keyboards for a tribute to the BeeGees. An unfortunate technical problem – a broken cable – could not be replaced until intermission, so the first half of the show was not as good as the second. Blending tracks with live singing, a piano, and a guitar is tricky at best and without the cable connecting everyone…

The second half was wonderful, and the trio went on to two sold-out shows in Bucerias. Canadians Tracey and Doug sitting next to me in the front row were happy as could be with the entire show. The boys played “Nights on Broadway” both Tracey’s and my fave BeeGee song. The harmonies, when we could hear all three voices, were sublime. The 23rd Annual Jazz Festival continues at Cuates y Cuetes until Thursday the 28th. It was quite thrilling to see Tom Coster and to hear Europa onstage with the sky and the Bay of Banderas becoming night in the background. Martin Montenegro on sax was wonderfully haunting. Memo Suarez, the only drummer-in-Vallarta-with-one-retina, was superb as MC; kept the crowd informed who was coming up to play and announced each and every band member. Saw a bunch of favorites including Moruno, Tatawari, and Media Luna. Many thanks to Esther, (Tete), owner of Cuates y Cuetes for throwing a hell of a party and the Equinox Ceremony. See everyone there, god willing, for number 24 next spring. At Incanto, Paul Aleman debuted his solo “Country Roads” tribute to John Denver last week. The audience was sold-out with many friends and fans of the late John Denver and Paul! What a joy to listen to such a sweet, rare voice. While Paul has the same vocal range as John Denver, he also has a warm and rich undertone that Denver did not have. Paul is brilliant on either a six-or twelvestring guitar. He included a couple of non-Denver tunes; one, a fave of his mom’s and mine – ‘Today.’ Not a dry eye in the house. His third and last performance will be at the Luna Lounge in Bucerias Thursday, March 28th. More about Paul Aleman in my column “From Here.”

El Arrayan

l Arrayán embraces Mexican charm. It is like being in a lovely Mexican home, albeit one with museum-quality Huichol artwork on its walls. Owners Carmen Porras and Claudia Victoria, together with chef Diego Sanchez are a formidable culinary co-op and bring a top-notch array of the wonders of regional Mexican dishes to Vallarta. Alas, I am no Diana Kennedy, the leading authority of Mexican cookery. But, ever avid for a novel gustatory experience, I’ve sampled huachinango a la Veracruzana in its native city, chiles en nogada and cemitas in Puebla, chocolate in Oaxaca, pastes of mystery fruits in the Mercado de Dulces in Morelia, poc chuc in Tulum, white fish on Lake Patzcuaro and blue corn huaraches on the streets of Mexico City, heck I nearly went for the escamoles in Acapulco but was insufficiently brave. And El Arrayán showcases this amazing diversity. Start with the roasted crispy cricket tacos. They are the real McCoy from Oaxaca and, although I don’t predict this appetizer will ever surpass say, guacamole in popularity, our guest Sergio commented “Ooh, I love crickets” - something you don’t hear every day. They are sautéed in tomatilloavocado salsa, very crunchy with a pop of lime. Duck is a speciality here – try the duck tostadas on a sesame corn crispy tostada with black beans and all the trimmings. Also plaintain empanadas - I am partial

to plantains having lived in Puerto Rico where I ate them every day for lunch. Ceviches run the gamut, all prepared with serrano peppers, so beloved in these parts. They are prepared with local fish, baby scallops or shrimp, the ceviche Colima and shrimp aguachile are classics. The boneless fish filet is exotic, prepared with a green pepper sauce and house-made pineapple vinegar. The shrimp with peanut mole makes for a lovely presentation and does not disappoint. Barbacoa rears its head, inventively served with nopal cactus salad and a “borracha” salsa. And here is Jalisco’s famous stew, a lamb birria, and Yucatan’s cochinita pibil. And does El Arrayán ever “get” moles. They are fantastic and they are rightly proud of them, there is a chicken with two - a black mole and a mole poblano (famously made by nuns in Puebla who had to improvise when they had company and the cupboard was bare). I, a duck lover from way back, seriously recommend the duck carnitas. It’s a third of a duck slowly cooked with guajillo-orange-arrayán sauce (their namesake Arrayán tree holds sway in the center of the courtyard). The meat is perfect, earthy and moist, bravo! Try one of their cocktails and/ or micheladas. They are a perfect accompaniment to the heat of the chili flavored dishes here. This is really a must go-to in Puerto Vallarta boasting the best of the gastronomic delights of this incredible, edible land. Allende #344 (El Centro)

ver the past ten years, we have helped hundreds of new homeowners in Mexico furnish their rental properties. Our goal is to help owners maximize their rental revenue. In addition to having comfortable and luxuriouslooking furniture and decor, we also provide tips on the small details

that allow their rental property to stand out from the competition. Although our checklist is extensive, here are a few tidbits. (For those interested in receiving the complete checklist, just email me at furniture@solutionsmexico. com). All bathrooms should have toiletries, an abundance of bath towels, hand towels and face cloths per guest, and a small trash can. Make sure to have at least two

outdoor towels per guest. Replace towels frequently. Just like linens, they need always to look new and will wear and tear more quickly than at home due to greater use. Stock your kitchen with two times the required dishes, silverware, glassware, and utensils. Renters generally don’t want to wash after each use. They are on holiday and want to spend more time relaxing. When purchasing linens for your rental, make sure to think about their laundry. You often have one set of guests checking out at 10 or 11 am, and a second set checking in the same day only a few hours later. That leaves a few short hours to clean the property thoroughly. Too many linens or ones that take a long time to dry will cost you time, money and stress. Your rental property should offer enough storage space for your guests to store folded clothes, and ample hangers to hang garments. Guests do not like to live out of their suitcases when on holiday. For bedrooms, invest in good quality mattresses. No one wants a sore back on their holiday. If you have a sofa bed, ensure the mattress is a memory foam sitting on good quality webbing construction. You are more likely to get a high rating on social media sites and their business again the following year. Today, password-protected wifi and high-speed internet are considered mandatory for rental properties. Make sure you have at least one flat screen TV with a port for a streaming service device or wifi connection. Comfortable outdoor furniture in a must in Mexico. If space is limited, opt for a dining table with well-padded, reclining chairs. This way, the chairs can be used upright for dining and extended for relaxing and reading a book later. Ensure all garbage and trash cans have liners. This is something that shows your renter that you care about the cleanliness of your property. Provide an initial supply of coffee, cream, and sugar so your guests can enjoy their first morning. Most guests do not travel with spices so a variety in your cupboard will be welcome. Always include a hair dryer in each bathroom. Offer a full-size ironing board not the small version, so your guests do not have to struggle with a mini version. Understanding the ‘My Health’ Program at Hospiten

ince its launch at the beginning of May 2018 the ‘My Health’ program at Hospiten has been very well received by both permanent and temporary residents of Puerto Vallarta. By now many are familiar with the four main areas including… 1. Home Health Care assistance, 2. Emergency Medical Transport, 3. Health Controls for chronic diseases and 4. General consultations in times of illness. In addition, Hospiten offers discharge support for up to seven days after any illness or treatment because quality care at Hospiten does not end when you leave the premises. While we are just about a month away from its one year anniversary, current members will continue to enjoy the My Health benefits throughout the summer. See below for details on how to still join this program, which continues to be a complimentary service for now. Hospiten Updates New My Health Reception Area – As the program grows, Hospiten has made appropriate changes in terms of service delivery. A reception area specifically for My Health is now situated on the first floor of Hospiten. Members can expect even more personalized attention from the My Health team in this new spot. Dueling Drag Divas Shine at The Red Room By Debbie White

he dynamic duo, the Dueling Drag Divas, starring Emmy Award Winner, Chi Chi Rones, and NY TimesAcclaimed Impressionist, JoAnna, have been performing their hit show at The Red Room every Sunday and Wednesday night at 9:30 pm. Sunday’s performance was not only hilarious but an impressive demonstration of the talent that these two artists possess. Both professional drag artists in their own right, Chi Chi and Joanna joined forces in Puerto Vallarta on a whim. 5 years ago and their show, Dueling Drag Divas, instantly became a smash hit and fan favorite! Both Chi Chi and Joanna sing LIVE with their own voices (no lip sync) and both have soaring ranges. Their infamous and uncanny celebrity impersonations are legendary and make for a night of great entertainment! This season their show features everything from pop to rock to jazz standards. As Sunday night’s performance began, the divas explained

how they would be engaged in a good-natured competition for our applause. They picked someone from the audience to gauge the applause response for their rounds of drag competition. Right from the start, the song parodies, costumes and performances were fantastic! Both these gals have an amazing set of lungs! Chi Chi as Tina Turner singing Disco Inferno was simply thrilling! And her Edith Piaf number, “La Vie En Rose” was beyond impressive! Not to be outdone, Joanna was amazing as Cher in “Winner Takes It All,” with both chiming in on a rousing version of “Proud Mary. Joannie’s fantastic parody of “All the Lonely People,” transformed to “All the Homely People” was absolutely brilliant as she channeled the character, Vicky Wisconski (from Joanna’s home state of Wisconsin). What a riot that performance was! There was lots of audience participation available for the brave and fearless. It was all done in good fun, with lots of laughs. The ‘cornhole’ competition with tiny rubber chickens was also a great moment

in the show! The gals continued with song parodies of Bette Midler, Marilyn Monroe, Lady Gaga, Mama Cass, and an unforgettable Janice Joplin that had us roaring with laughter. And wait until you see Joanna’s Amy Winehouse number. To die for! Chi Chi’s Liza Minelli was wonderful, as she performed a rousing version of “Cabaret.” In fact, the Dueling Drag Divas began their act together 6 years ago with a dueling Judy Garland number. They delivered a tribute to Judy with a great parody of “Over the Rainbow.” In the end, Chi Chi won the night for applause, but both delivered superb performances. The quality of the show was excellent and the live singing was 1st class. The jokes and action-packed parodies were wonderful! This show is a winner! JoAnna is celebrating her 13th season in Vallarta! Starting out in NYC. She will be performing her own solo show at The Red Room on April 17, 21, 24 and 28.. She has won numerous awards through the years for her performances. In addition to PV, JoAnna has enjoyed 6 successful seasons in Provincetown and 8 summers in Ogunquit, Maine. The month came to a smashing climax with the 23rd Annual Jazz Festival at Cuates y Cuetes. It was a great one spanning over 10 music filled days. March 21st, the big day of music on the beach was quite exciting. The day began with Tajín, an impressive duo formed by the talented and beautiful Magali Uribe on voice and violin and the legendary Nestor Villaseñor--guardian of traditional and prehispánic musical instruments--on harp and flute and for this performance joined by Roberto Falcon on Bass, Fernando Rojas on Guitar and Carlos Mantilla on Cajón They treated us to a collection of Latin American folkloric classics beginning with the spirited piece by Dominican singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra, Ojala Que Llueva Café (Hope it Rains Coffee) and finishing with the lovely voice of Magali performing an original piece that brought tears to the eyes of the romantics in the audience. Next up we heard from Proyecto Montenegro with the tenor saxophone of Martin Montenegro, Miguel Rodriguez on keyboard, Roberto Falcon on Bass, Brian Macedo on guitar and Chuy Estrada’s percussion performing marvelous jazz. Tatewari followed with a great show of their fiery flamenco music including my favorite, the beautiful original piece from their latest CD, Fuego Dentro. The sounds of the Medite-

rranean were next with Moruno’s Diego Mateo and Nacho Flores joined by Oscar Terazzas on sax. Their new CD just came out including absolutely beautiful Mediterranean pieces and some smooth swing—Them Their Eyes. Jaír and Caleb Cabrera and cousin Gibran Monzalvo Cabrera of Media Luna did not let us down offering their exciting music with their extended band including Colombian Guilio Urango on accordion and voice and Armando “Jimmie” Renteria of Queretaro on percussion. The traditional blessing and celebration of the arrival of Spring segued into the performance we were waiting for by Tom Coster, internationally known keyboardist and composer of the fabulous piece he wrote for and recorded with Carlos Santana, Europa. Coster, highlight of the afternoon, performed in the company of a very talented line up including saxophonists Martin Montenegro and Oscar Terrazas, Brazilian Marco Milagros on Bass, Giovanni Figueroa on drums and Jimmy Rentería on percussion. They were indeed impressive! Not to be out done, Mother Nature played a dramatic role at the end of the evening with a giant wave sending the crowd scrambling up the beach to higher ground and taking out the power source bringing the show to an unexpectedly early end, robbing us of the opportunity of hearing from the hard working Liliana Buneder of Faralae who had been running to and fro all day long helping with the coordination of the event and

the remainder of great entertainers waiting to come on. Nevertheless, the day was a great success and a great time was had by all! Congratulations again to Doña Teté and the staff of Cuates y Cuetes and thank you for your wonderful gift to Puerto Vallarta! The Many Ralphs

is name is Ralph Sima and along with his friends Mike and Ross are known as The Rhythm Roosters – a great band that enjoys performing mostly oldies from the fifties and sixties. Ralph plays bass guitar and sings. And while his bass guitar playing is very good it is his talent as a vocalist that separates him from the pack. It might be described as smoky, or perhaps raspy. When Ralph is performing it’s easy to close your eyes and imagine that Sam Cooke is right in front of you. His renditions of Cupid, You Send Me and Twistin’ the Night Away are remarkable. Sam Cooke was one of the early pioneers of soul music. He was a wonderful writer and had a prolific career cut short at the age of thirty-three. He was an influence on the likes of Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Billy Preston and, of course, more recently, our man Ralph. In reality there aren’t a lot of celebrities, or musicians for that matter, named Ralph. You know, it’s just not that popular a name. I mean, not like John, Paul, George and Ringo or guys like that. But, in the land of fantasy, where some of us happen to dwell, a couple Ralphs come to mind rather readily. The first would be Ralph Kramden, of The Honeymooners, of course. The character and the television show were created by The Great One himself, Jackie Gleason. In the mid-fifties it was hugely successful. And of Ralph they say, “He was frustrated by his lack of success. He often develops get-rich-quick schemes. He is short tempered and resorts to bellowing, making insults and hollow threats. He is proficient at bowling and playing pool and likes to brag about his non-existent golf skills.” Some of us might be less aware of how successful Mr. Gleason was in the music world. The albums that he released sold well into the millions. And in response to being asked why his records were so popular he responded, “Every time I ever watched Clark Gable do a love scene in the movies, I’d hear this really pretty music, real romantic, come up behind him and help set the mood. So I’m figuring that if Clark Gable needs that kinda help, then a guy in Canarsie has gotta be dyin’ for somethin’ like this!” Later in the fifties two fellows

named Hanna and Barbera decided to capitalize on the success of The Honeymooners. They would create an animated show mimicking what Gleason had achieved. Basically, they would just rip him off. The show they created was The Flintstones and it went on to tremendous success. The Flintstones were an obvious exploitation of The Honeymooners. It no doubt pissed Gleason off to the point of taking the matter to court but part of him probably enjoyed it as a compliment. After all, as Oscar Wilde once said, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.” However, that is probably not the reason that Mr. Gleason did not sue. Apparently, his publicist told him something like, “Do you really want to be known as the guy who took Fred Flintstone off television?” Oscar Wilde certainly had some interesting quotes. My favourite is perhaps what he supposedly said on his deathbed, “This wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. Either it goes or I do.” Kind of like my little story here, you might say. Another Ralph that comes to mind in the world of illusion and delusion is King Ralph. That movie that came out in 1991 and starred John Goodman. He played the role of a Las Vegas lounge singer who inadvertently becomes the King of England. He doesn’t really like being the king and eventually gives up the throne to become a simple

Duke. In 1994 Goodman went on to star in the film The Flintstones. It was another massively successful project and based of course in the town of Bedrock. And by now you must be asking yourself what this has to do with anything? Well, a long, long time ago, in the town of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, there was a popular place called Bedrock which hosted live music. And then sometime during the last century it was taken over by a young couple, Barry and Ana. They promptly changed the name to Ana Bananas and it quickly became a mecca for live music. Every notable musician in Banderas Bay has performed there at one time or another. And they have live music at least four or five nights a week as well as one of the best dance floors around. While you’re there you might want to pick up one of their souvenir tee shirts imprinted: La Cruz de Huanacaxtle A Sleepy Little Drinking Village With a Fishing Problem As it happens, Ralph and The Rhythm Roosters perform at Ana Bananas on Sunday evenings and will be performing at the Calgary Blue Festival in August. Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony

eethoven’s Ninth Symphony, composed when he was totally deaf, is considered one of the greatest classical pieces of all time. Disability did not hold him back. Beethoven was totally deaf by the age of 52. As his hearing became worse Beethoven struggled to communicate with people but the biggest challenge for him was conducting and performing in concerts, because he just couldn’t hear. It’s hard to believe that Ludwig could even function when he was totally deaf, never mind compose and conduct a worldclass symphony. And how about Helen Keller? Helen contracted an illness when she was 18 months, which left her blind, deaf and mute, but she developed a limited way of communicating and created a basic form of sign language. She began a relationship with a woman called Anne Sullivan who became her guide and mentor, teaching her finger spelling and other ways of communicating. Helen was the first deaf-blind person to achieve a Bachelor of Arts degree. She became a writer and communicated with millions of people around the world. She will be remembered for the endless work she did for people with disabilities. Here are three quotations from her that seem appropriate for this article: “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart,” “Alone we can do so little; together we can

do so much,” and “Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.” Imagine you are totally deaf in Puerto Vallarta and you are rushed to the hospital because you fell on the cobblestones. How do you tell the doctor what’s wrong? If you are a child in school, how do you let the teacher know what you know? How do you hear a fire alarm or a microwave’s “ping”? At the moment there is no help for the hundred and twenty totally deaf people in PV but there are plans to change that. After many years of no financial support from government, the private sector or NGOs, the Centre For Training and Gathering of the Deaf is being resurrected in Puerto Vallarta. The Eco Rotaract Club has seventeen members, seven of whom are hearing-impaired, and they are the people trying to raise funds to hire a teacher and a psychologist for the centre. Their first fundraiser will be a Sunset Cruise on the “Bahia Allegre”. It’s on Monday, 1st April at 5:00pm. It offers free non-alcoholic drinks, a cash bar, snacks, music and entertainment. It’s a steal of a deal for $400pesos. Tickets are available by calling Antonio at 322 125-5013. The International Friendship Club (IFC) strives to help Mexicans who need financial help with their health or their education and “The Deaf School” will help us deliver that help to the deaf people here. hile we have a few jewelers at Market that sell silver, Jorge is the only one who still plies Los Muertos beach selling to tourists comfortably ensconced in their chairs enjoying Vallarta’s sunshine.
