welcome

Welcome to Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit

A

t the Tribune we want you to have the best experience possible while you explore Puerto Vallarta, the Bay of Banderas and Riviera Nayarit. Here are some helpful tips for traveling. TIME ZONE: The entire state of Jalisco is on Central Time, as is the southern part of the State of Nayarit starting from San Blas in the north. BUSES: A system of urban buses with different routes can bring you from one end of the bay to the other and all the spots in between. If you’re going further than San Pancho, head to the main bus terminal to catch a ‘Pacifico’ bus. Current fare is 10.00 pesos. TAXIS: There are set rates within defined zones of town. Do not enter a taxi without agreeing on the price with the driver first. Make a note of the taxi number in case you leave something behind. Drivers typically do not carry change.

UBER: New in 2017 to Puerto Vallarta, Uber is still experiencing some growing pains particularly in the state of Nayarit. Uber is about 25-50% cheaper than a taxi, but this is subject to change. The benefits of using Uber are set fares and the ability to follow up directly with your driver if there is an incident or you leave an item behind. MONEY EXCHANGE: Typically a bank will give you a higher rate of exchange than the exchange booths (Caja de Cambio). You will need your passport. Better yet, use your bank card to withdraw funds from any ATM. Note that ATM’s in the banks are the safest to use and charge lower fees. DRINKING WATER: While Puerto Vallarta’s water has been awarded a certification of purity for the past two decades, the quality

of the water tested at the source varies greatly from what comes out of the tap at the other end. So do be careful. If you want to be doubly sure, you can pick up bottled water just about anywhere. EXPORTING PETS: Falling in love with the street dog outside your hotel is easy to do and it’s also easy to bring them home with you too. The process is inexpensive and only takes a day or two. You need a certificate of health from a local vet among other things. For the most up-to-date information contact the Puerto Vallarta SPCA at spcapv@ gmail.com. COMMON SENSE: Just as you wouldn’t walk around your hometown drunk and belligerent, it is not acceptable to do that here. While Mexico is a tolerant culture, basic politeness is appreciated. Don’t pee in the streets. Don’t flash your money or expensive gadgets. Pay attention to your surroundings. Know where you are going. Pay your bills (and don’t forget to tip). And have fun! DRINKING AND DRIVING: First off – just don’t. The consequences are not worth it. Taxis or Ubers are cheap and plentiful. Fines are as much as 12,000 pesos. You can be taken to jail and your vehicle impounded. There are many checkstops on the weekends, and you will be asked to blow if they suspect you have been drinking. LEGAL SYSTEM: Not knowing the law is not a valid excuse in Mexico, or anywhere. If you find yourself caught in a legal situation be aware that guilt is presumed until your innocence can be proven. This is a very difficult lesson to learn if you are visiting from the United States or Canada. Immediately contact your consulate for assistance.

CALLING IN MEXICO Calling phones in Mexico can be tricky. There are different codes you need to use depending if you are calling landlines or cellular phones and if they are local or long distance. LONG-DISTANCE CALLS FROM WITHIN MEXICO For national long-distance calls (within Mexico) the code is 01 plus the area code and phone number. For international long-distance calls, first dial 00, then the country code (U.S. and Canada country code is 1), so you would dial 00 + 1 + area code + 7 digit number. CALLING CELL PHONES (FROM A LAND LINE) If you are calling from a landline within the area code of the Mexican cell phone number dial 044, the 10 digit number. Outside of the area code (but still within Mexico) dial 045 and then the 10 digit phone number. Cell phone to cell phone only requires the 10 digit number. CALLING TOLL-FREE NUMBERS Some toll free numbers work from Mexico to the US and Canada, but many do not. Those that do work are often not toll-free. You need to dial a different prefix. To call the following toll free prefixes, dial as follows: 800 numbers Dial 001-880-then the number 866 numbers Dial 001-883-then the number 877 numbers Dial 001-882-then the number 888 numbers Dial 001-881-then the number

Sending Hugs to Cynthia!

E

verything was going pretty smoothly considering we’re in Mexico and ‘getting things done’ isn’t one of those things Mexico is known for but just as you become complacent – boom. Disaster. Longtime Tribune graphic designer and layout assistant extraordinaire Cynthia Andrade

slipped and fell badly, and the prognosis isn’t great. Thankfully Cynthia will be okay, but she needs a couple surgeries and won’t be in the office for some time. If you’re friends with her - please send a message via Facebook. She would appreciate that. In the meantime we are left to navigate a computer system, in Spanish, while doing all the layout, editing, writing and even putting some ad designs together – so if I’ve royally messed up this week, be kind. I’m exhausted. Also thankfully we have some fantastic writers at the newspaper who have brought their A-game once again, and we can enjoy their weekly contributions. Marcia has resurrected her Comings and Going column to bring you highlights of mostly theater events happening around town. AJ always amuses, and his article on Go-Kart racing doesn’t disappoint. We welcome a new contributor out of Bucerias – Kelly Wilson is a new implant (transplant?) and will be covering Bucerias as well as providing some humorous tales of a newbie

in Mexico. Sometimes through the lens of Facebook, I can see how nutso life gets for Pam Thompson so when she writes to say she can’t make the deadline this week, I get it. I’m impressed it doesn’t happen more often. Many events are happening – I’ve tried to include as many as possible in the pages of this week's Tribune – one that stands out is the homage to Vallarta’s most prolific sculptor, Jim Demetro. The city of Vallarta’s Cultural department has

Dec. 13 - 19, 2018 www.vallartatribune.com

arranged a tribute to Jim on Friday, December 14th at 6:30 pm in the Lazaro Cardenas park in front of his 'Andale Bernardo' sculpture. If you are a fan of the many sculptural works of art around Puerto Vallarta, please drop by and pay your respects to the man who has made so many of them possible. I am short of space, and well out of time. Plus I’ve been sitting in this chair for about 48 hours straight. So, I’ll leave you with two things – please vote in the 2nd

Annual Readers Choice Awards. Your participation means that our results genuinely represent the Best of Banderas Bay and the second thing is, shop locally. With Christmas around the corner, now is the time to put a few pesos back into the pockets of local restaurants, shops, and vendors. Sending huge Cynthia. Safe travels, Madeline

ere at Parque de los Azulejos the 2018-2019 season is in full swing, and we’ve just wrapped another awesome workshop with a great group of people! Don’t miss out on your chance to change the face of Vallarta. The next workshop will be happening January 15, 16 and 17th and we’d love it if you could join us. We know everyone loves a good sale, particularly at this time of year, so holiday pricing is still in effect for all celebration tiles! All throughout December we’re offering $100 off each tile, and that discount is offered for all remaining 3-day workshops this year too! Still

need a great holiday gift? Consider a personalized tile for that special someone, or just send them to Tile Day Camp for a few days! Speaking of personalized tiles, we’re receiving another batch of tiles this week, and we’re so excited to get a look at them in person! The stories that the tiles represent are often really touching, but it always becomes more “real” when we get to see your celebration tiles in person. another season in Vallarta same amount of time she had the Boutique. It has worked for her, and has given her the flexibility to travel and to sell her work in other areas, as well. It has been interesting to see the growth and development of June’s jewelry throughout the years. Her use of semi-precious and precious stones is awe-inspiring. Her travels to New York, Tucson, India, and Morocco have influenced her work. June first studied jewelry making in New York and then after teaching and working in New York she was able to do an apprenticeship in Taxco. She was in Taxco

What sets her jewelry aside from contemporary jewelry these days, is that everything is entirely hand wrought and her prices are very accessible, considering the amount of work. She would love it if you all came up to her Gallery on Saturday, December 15th and Sunday, December 16th from 1 to 8 to celebrate another season in Vallarta, see old friends and meet some new ones. M

y sister Patrice has returned home to snow and ice. For the first couple of days, I felt like I was floundering without her company. We sure had a great, busy time. Beautiful too, that our brother, Mark, made the brutally long trip from Sweden to join us for a couple of weeks. Now, memories and Facebook connect us again, a bit closer than ever. Before I forget, I did check in with Matthias Vogt and Yvonne Kalman to see if there are a few tickets left for the annual fundraiser at Casa Yvonneka this coming Saturday, the 15th. There are, but expected to sell out. You might get lucky! The second annual fundraiser for R.I.S.E. (Refugio Infantil Santa Esperanza) will take place at Demetro Galeria on Saturday, the 15th at 6 pm. Last year was a lovely success with many of the kids from R.I.S.E. helping serve food and cleaning up. The Demetro Gallery is located on Lazaro Cardenas, just across from the Park where Jim Demetro ’s monumental bronze of Bernardo the Burro stands. Just FYI, this starts early enough for everyone (including me!) to arrive on time, leave a donation and continue on to wherever it is you are going for the night. I’ll be at Boutique

Theatre for 8:30…see my other column ‘Comings and Goings.’ Any reg readers out there know I’ve taken up playing bingo every Wednesday at Nacho Daddy’s. Two are for animals – Purr Project and Colina Free Spay and Neuter Clinic, and one is for Pasitos de Luz, rotating weekly. All good causes and I continue to go because I am WINNING. I have to publicly thank my coach – the infinitely patient Rhonda Twiddles. (Yes, I had to learn how to play bingo!) It can be baffling but worth the effort when you win! So, you should come, too. The food is excellent, the atmosphere very fun, super prizes…especially the 50/50 that can reach thousands of pesos (thank you, Purr Project!) Just one word of caution: I really like winning so… This just in: my dear friend Jovany of the fabulous shop Ropero de Jovany is overseeing a 3.5 million dollar Estate Sale in Conchas Chinas this Friday and Saturday. Find his ad in this issue and get shopping! Jovany’s estate sales are always amazing. Had lunch with my lovely friend and Master Nutritionist Anna Carrasco at BabelBar a couple of days ago. She has been at conferences in Mexico City furthering her knowledge

about nutrition. Anna has come up with a brilliant idea to help people who need to watch their intake of food particularly this time of year. Anna specializes in treating diabetes, but her new workshops/chats are open to anyone who wants/needs to know what to do when faced with the avalanche of food and beverages around this holiday season. Anyone with heart issues, weight problems, diabetes or those who are interested in feeding their bodies properly are welcome. Her informal chats are held weekly outdoors at BabelBar on Wednesdays and in her office living room on Thursdays. See her ad in the Shopping Pages to contact her and let her know which day is best for you to meet. The costs are minimal, and the results could save a life – yours! She is also available for one-on-one consults! Best wishes go out to friend and colleague Cynthia from the Tribuna/Vallarta Tribune. She took a fall and is in surgery as we speak. Movement as Medicine By Via Anderson

yogawithvia@gmail.com

Via Anderson, E-RYT 500, is a yoga and movement coach and teaches a weekly Intelligent Movement Forever class on Thursday at 1 pm at Yoga Vallarta. She also teaches online and in private sessions at her studio. This 76-year-old grandmother practices what she preaches and teaches. She is the author of “How to Move Out of Pain: A Compendium of Intelligent Movement,” to be released in 2019.

How to exercise function, not dysfunction, joint-by-joint.

E

ach of our major joints has a primary need for mobility or stability in an alternating pattern. Knowing this can help you move better and stay out of compensation and pain. You experience pain in the lower back/neck and shoulders/feet and ankles. You limit your movements to avoid the pain. But there may be another answer. Your pain may stem from subtle compensation patterns that you can change. Compensation occurs when one body part does not move well and another body part tries to help out. The lumbar spine often compensates for lack of mobility at the hip joints. Or lack of mobility in the upper back. Compensation is common, but not helpful. In this example, it will generate lower

back pain. The joint-by-joint approach can help us identify and change these compensation patterns. Our joints need both mobility and stability. But each joint has a primary need for one or the other. Michael Boyle and Gray Cook first identified this "joint-by-joint approach" to healthy movement . The joint-by-joint approach applies to most bodies, most of the time. It includes an alternating pattern. A joint that has a primary need for stability has a joint above it and below it that needs mobility. For example, the vertebra in the lumbar spine need stability. The vertebra in the thoracic spine above it need mobility. The hip joint below it needs mobility. If you know this pattern, you can

use it to exercise function instead dysfunction. Starting from the bottom, the joint-by-joint alternating pattern looks like this: • Foot – Stability • Ankle – Mobility • Knee – Stability • Hip – Mobility • Lumbar Spine – Stability • Thoracic Spine – Mobility • Scapula – Stability •Gleno-humeral Joint – Mobililty • Lower and Middle Cervical Spine (C3-C7) – Stability • Cervical Spine Upper (C1-C2) – Mobililty Knowing this, we can see that lumbar spine lower back pain may come from too much mobility in the lumbar spine. Even if the lower back feels tight. The lumbar spine may be working overtime trying to compensate for hip immobility. Or thoracic immobility. The mobility-stability needs in the cervical spine (neck) are a little different. The lower and middle cervical vertebra (C3-C7) need stability. The upper cervical vertebra (C1-C2) need mobility. Any variation of the classic chin tuck demonstrates the cervical spine stability-mobility needs. In the chin tuck, the skull nods forward and backward over the top two cervical vertebra while the lower and middle vertebra remain stable. Often neck and shoulder issues, including forward head position, stem from a habit of rounding the cervical spine forward to look at our cell phones, computers, or even read a book. Instead of

Dec. 13 - 19, 2018 www.vallartatribune.com

keeping the cervical spine stable and nodding the skull. Summing up: Each major joint has a primary need for either mobility or stability. Think about the needs of each joint as you move or stabilize to help you "feed" your joints what they need. This will support your joints to do the job they

were meant to do. Avoid compensation. It is always a compromise movement. Exercise your function, not your dysfunction. [Medical disclaimer: This article is for education and information only. It is not a substitute for a doctor’s opinion.)

ave you had enough of beer, wine and margaritas? Would you like to exercise your imagination and your legs for a morning? Have I got the deal for you! And it’s almost free! Take an IFC Home Tour and see, in just three hours, four fabulous homes perched on the rocky headlands of Banderas Bay, nestled on a hillside in Conchas Chinas or hidden behind a wall in the Zona Romatica. And imagine what it would be like to stay a night, a month or a lifetime in one of them. Now comes the exercise part. You have to be able to climb a few steps to sit on a comfortable bus and, when you get to the houses, there may be cobbled streets and stairs to negotiate, so your knees,

hips, feet and lungs all need to work. Tours leave from the Sea Monkey Restaurant (beach and Aquiles Serdan) at 10:30 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and return about 1:30. But seats are at a premium so it’s best to book in advance at www. ifctoursforvallarta.com or pick up your ticket at the clubhouse of the International Friendship Club (IFC) which is upstairs at the northeast corner of the bridge where Insurgentes crosses the River Cuale. Almost free? Just $700 pesos. It’s a steal of a deal! Not only will you have a good time with our docents but also all of the profits are used to support IFC’s free cleft palate program for kids and help local charities.

his weekend on Saturday, December 15, Demetro Gallery will host a benefit to help the education costs of the children at the Refugio Infantil Santa Esperanza. Better known as R.I.S.E., the Refugio Infantil Santa Esperanza is a non-profit shelter for babies and children under the age of 14. Some of these children are orphans, but

most come from unbearable situations. There are currently approximately 50 children in residence. Operating cost of the shelter are more than $5,000 USD per month, not including other needs and programs, like the children's education and for this reason sculptor Jim Demetro and his wife Eva are hosting this benefit to lend a helping hand.

Dubbed 'Revolution through Education,' this fundraising event will donate all proceeds to benefit the RISE education fund. Come enjoy an beautiful evening that includes outstanding food, beverages, and more - all for a good cause! 100 % of proceeds raised will be donated to the education fund for these children.

Tickets are available for $400 Pesos at Demetro Gallery on Lazaro Cardenas, located across from the park of the same name, on the south side of Puerto Vallarta. If you can’t attend the event but would like to become a donor, RISE depends on private donors to provide a secure, clean and loving environment for children who are either homeless or at risk in their

own home. You can learn more about donating at risepv.com/ donations/ Volunteer Opportunities: Are you planning to visit Puerto Vallarta during the winter months? You can volunteer to at the Refugio, or visit on Sundays from 11 am to 5 pm, there is no need to call ahead.

Cellulitis!

L

iving here, or vacationing here, we seem to be exposed to a big variety of skin “stuff”, from bites to rashes. People often send me photos of all kinds of their skin conditions, from pimples to sunburns, bites to rashes. I just never know what I will be opening with an email that says “see attached photo of this thing on my skin”. Hopefully I am not eating anything at that time. Oftentimes this issue has become “cellulitis”. We asked our vascular specialist, Dr. Hector Escoto some questions about cellulitis. He is the physician who I learned a long time ago to send these patients to, with excellent resolution of the problem. What is cellulitis? It is a common and potentially serious bacterial skin infection. It appears as a swollen, red area on the skin that feels hot and tender. The skin on the lower legs is most commonly affected, though it can occur anywhere on the body or face. Is it dangerous? Left untreated, the spreading infection can rapidly turn life-threatening. It is important to seek medical attention if cellulitis symptoms occur. How is it treated? Treatment usually includes a prescription

of oral antibiotics to be taken for as long as the physician directs, usually five to ten days but possibly up to fourteen days. Are some people more prone to have cellulitis? There are several factors that place one at a higher risk of developing cellulitis: Skin injury, weakened immune system, skin conditions such as eczema, athlete’s foot, chicken pox, shingles, chronic swelling of arms/legs (lymphedema), history of cellulitis, IV drug use.

Is there any prevention? To help prevent cellulitis and other infections, take these precautions when you have a skin wound: Wash the wound daily with soap and water. Apply a protective crème or ointment. Cover the wound with a bandage. Watch for signs of infection: redness, pain and drainage. People with diabetes and those with poor circulation need to take extra precautions to prevent skin injuries. Good skin care measures include the following: Inspect your feet daily, moisturize your skin regularly, trim your fingernails and toenails carefully, protect your hands and feet, promptly treat infections on the skin’s surface (superficial), such as athlete’s foot. Thank you Dr. Escoto! Dr. Hector Escoto attended school at the University of Guadalajara and performed his specialty in Cardiothoracic and Vascular surgery at Hospital Civil in Guadalajara. His main focus is to always make sure that he provides the very best medical attention to his patients and keeping updated in the newest medical treatments and surgical procedures. He says “There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a happy face on a patient when they have recovered their health.” We are so very proud to work with him. So many people seem to have the “creeping’ crud” and self-diagnosing and self-medicating is running rampant. This is leading to many hospital admissions (pneumonia especially). Please folks, use some common sense! And for the love of everything holy, if you are sick please do not attend that cocktail party, that performance at a theater, that social gathering. Stay home and rest. Wash your hands. Wash your hands. Wash your hands. Have a sparkling week!

s our physical health is important, our spiritual, mental and emotional aspects of the self are also just as important. Balance is the key in all areas. As we approach the holiday season many feelings that come up for us can be caused by an unrealistic sense of what the holidays may mean for us. It’s easy to become distracted with our desires to create the perfect environment, whether it’s a need to create a festive party, always be in an upbeat mood or finding all of the right gifts for everyone. Focusing your attention on these sorts of intentions can take away from what is truly important to us. Everyone has a different take on what is important to them, of course. What I feel is truly important is celebrating our lives with people we care about. For many of us this time of year can stir up a wide variety of mixed emotions. We may feel sad due to a lost loved one and remem-

bering past holiday celebrations or feelings of being let down due to expectations of others or ourselves. One way to get more out of the holidays is to create a personal inventory list of what matters to us the most in this present moment. Each item on the list can allow us to set a conscious intention to express our joy for the blessings we do have right now. Holiday Depression is real for many and anxiety and stress can affect us at any age. Many times these feelings can be triggered in the holiday season by the loss of a loved one or specific life event. Managing your mental and emotional distress is important. There are many that think a person should be able to just ‘get over it’. Sometimes we need assistance in realigning our perspectives. Supporting and doing your best to understand a loved one who is experiencing depression or stress is important for both parties. Many times a person may not understand why a person who is depressed is

acting in a certain way. That’s ok! You do not need to understand everything. Finding a professional to assist in healing is a good start. Simply be there for them. Ask how you can help. Be patient as they learn new coping strategies, and you can offer to help them practice these new strategies. Listen. Listen. Listen. Most folks are not looking for answers from you. Also, be sure to keep healthy boundaries and get support for yourself if needed. The more we can let go of the traditional expectations the more we can open to the authenticity of the beautiful spirit that resides in each of us. Bringing in feelings of gratitude brings in so much more energies of joy and loving kindness to all we come across. This is one way we can truly share our gifts of love, peace, compassion and joy with everyone around us. For questions or comments please write to Cat@NewEnergyConsciousness.com INJOY!

exico Tourism Board CEO Hector Flores Santana, in a meeting with 31 federal entities at the MTB’s headquarters, discussed the tourism industry’ growth and the board’s 2019 Marketing Plan. According to Flores Santana, Mexico’s tourism industry saw a 6.9 percent increase in international tourist arrivals from January to September. Income generated by non-residents during 2018 has been in line with the MTB’s forecasts at the beginning of 2018. Tourism revenue has reached $16.6 billion, marking a 4.5 percent increase from the same period in 2017. Flores Santana emphasized that tourism revenue, the third highest source of net income in Mexico, nearly made up for the

deficit in the country’s economy. Flores Santana also outlined the MTB’s 2019 Marketing Plan. The board will continue its promotional campaigns, such as “Viajemos Todos Por México,” “A World of Its Own” and “Dear Country,” and will introduce a new campaign inspired by the “Dear Mexicans” campaign, called “Dear States.” This effort will consist of letters written by travelers to states such as Baja California Sur, Campeche, Jalisco and more. Additionally, the MTB has taken steps to fight the negative impact of various destinations’ reputations. This year Flores Santana said the MTB coordinated and carried out eight crisis management workshops with over 200, participants, 26 destinations and members of the tourism industry.

he United States Department of State updated its travel advisory for Mexico last month, classifying the major international tourism destinations as safe. The locations have received a “Level 2 – exercise increased caution” ranking, the same rating given to the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany and China. The U.S. Department of State gave most of the states the Level 2 rating, including: Quintana Roo, Baja California Sur, Mexico City, Yucatán, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Puebla, Guanajuato, Baja California, Querétaro, Campeche, Veracruz, Tabasco. In states it advised visitors to reconsider travel, the U.S. Department of State exempted major tourist destinations. This includes

Mazatlán, Los Mochis and Port Topolobampo in Sinaloa; Guadalajara, PuertoVallarta, Chapala and Ajijic in Jalisco; Riviera Nayarit, Punta Mita, Nuevo Vallarta, Santa Maria del Oro and Xalisco in Nayarit; Manzanillo in Colima; Morelia and Lazaro Cardenas in Michoacán; and Piedras Negras and Acuna City in Coahuila. The Mexico Tourism Board responded to the U.S. Department of State’s ranking, expressing concern that the system accounts for overall crime of a country or state and does not look at the threat to tourists or business travelers. In a press release it said, “the overwhelming majority of these incidents do not take place in tourist destinations or places that tourists frequent, and an even smaller portion involve tourists.”

The Art of Sustainability

U

ltra efficient air conditioners and biodegradable plastic bags made out of avocado pits are associated with sustainability. In general, when many people think of going green, products often come to mind first. But as we’ve covered in past articles, ‘sustainability’ as a concept encompasses 3 areas: the ecology, the economy and the community. Today we are going to focus on community, with a particular community asset in Bucerias being highlighted. One fundamental feature of sustainable communities is a sense of connection: between community members and their environment too.

In this era of screen time trumping face time and porch time, many people feel utterly disassociated from their fellow human beings. It is a paradox of the age: unprecedented connection between humans scattered across the globe yet unprecedented disconnection between humans right next to each other. The most casual perusal of a restaurant, with even dinner dates absorbed in the glow of their devices, demonstrates our modern paradox of extreme connection/ disconnection. When it comes to going green, any shift towards the disconnected end of the experience spectrum

also results in ecological havoc. A disconnected community spews its messes onto the greater ecology. On the other hand, having a sense of connection to ourselves, our neighbors and our planet is the greatest impetus towards true sustainability and global change. Food and traditions are famous antidotes to the scourge of disconnection. Humans have reforged their communal bonds over ritualistic chow downs for millennia. Of course, sports have also historically provided a safety valve for community aggressions and the need to experience collective ecstasy and disappointment. Communal work, whether farming, hunting, gathering or community defense, all served to galvanize a sense of connection. But perhaps the most primordial catalyst for community that we know of is the arts. Caves that sheltered the swirling stories and pictograms of the most ancient humans on record, testify to the power of the arts helping us define our humanity. These artistic relics served to not only connect ancient humans to each other but link them

to the modern era in a language that transcends time. Here in Nayarit, Mexico, we have a gem of artistic potential in the heart of Bucerias. It is called the Hacienda de Arte. I am going to give you a little background about it and a way you can help the Hacienda enhance its impact on the community. The foundress expresses it best: “Hacienda de Arte is a creative arts center in Bucerias founded by artist Orisia Nova and her partner, Gilberto Dominguez. HdA was founded to be a vibrant artistic and cultural center, a place for creatives to gather and share their talent and passion with the community via workshops, events and performances, while offering unique experiences for visitors/tourists. It offers a variety of art forms such as Abstract Art, Dance, Yoga, Music, Photography, the Healing Arts and more. It also offers opportunities for young artists to benefit from ongoing classes with an emphasis on freedom of expression. This “House of Art,” is home to a modern art gallery and gift shop,

an art studio, “The Muses Garden Café,”, a performance area and large outdoor garden. A calendar of events and workshops is available at the Hacienda de Arte Facebook page and Instagram.” In addition to all these incredible opportunities for members of the Bay of Banderas community to come together as thriving creatives, I have been honored to assist with creating a new garden plan for the Hacienda that needs your help. The ample backyard has been divided into quadrants that celebrate the elements of earth, air, fire and water. Each quadrant is infused with a different spirit of activities, color and representations of its element. This forthcoming space will be available to community members, pedestrians, tourists and artists. With features ranging from wild play areas for kids to a baking zone, vegetable boxes and herbal tea garden, the Muses Garden provides a verdant stage for human connection: the arts, food, nature and beauty all rolled into one. The Muses Garden is looking for sponsors for its Phase 1 installation. The sustainability-minded local landscaping company, La Costera (lacostera.org) is on standby to begin this impactful installation. Please consider contributing to this vitally needed center for the arts and its attendant garden. It will do wonders for your sense of connectedness, guaranteed!

aming a cat has always been a spontaneous thing for me. Usually the name just organizes itself from the vast amount of references you have stored over a lifetime. In this case; my pet cat I had named Fluffy Tail came back to me this year. It was like magic. The day I arrived, there she was, we caught eyes and then she came over. Plus she was carrying one wee kitten with her. When it came time to name the darling little bundle of soft & curious, playful & heart warming joy, the name of my old mentor Berenice Abbott, the ‘Doyenne of Photography’ was the first name that came to me. I suggest that when asking a question, you might as well think big! Both Tesla and Einstein said they got their answers from the universe. There are now a few movies dealing with this concept. Tesla used to say that when lightening was striking, he found an entrance into the world where his deceased relatives were hanging and could communicate with them. Einstein used to meditate and try to reach a vibrational frequency so these answers would just come to him. It is also the same information resource for dowsers who connect to the ether-net and find the information they are looking for. The shaman takes a quest to the DNA god for answers and the Sadhu

from India do this by entering Samādhi meditation. The whirling Dervish gets there by spinning in circles. Seems like everyone is going to extreme places to get their answers. That brings us back to Berenice Abbott, an intelligent, insightful well-read artist who might have seen the future just as it was forming, as is witnessed in many of her ‘Changing New York’ photographs. But more on that another day…. So with all that said, while I pondering just what was in my cat, Berenice’s head, these images came together making for a wonderfully mystical image that might be as good an answer to so many of bigger questions. Remember that the thoughts you think today form the world of tomorrow. If you are interested in finding out more about Berenice Abbott, there is a wonderful new book published on her fascinating life by Julia Van Haaften. Julia brings this artist to life with great detail starting from first adventures in NYC, Paris in the twenties working for Man Ray and discovering Eugene Atget. I am also honoured to have a portrait I took of Bernice published with good measure in this outstanding book. You can buy it here if you are so interested. w w w. a m a z o n . c o m / B e re n i ce-Abbott-Julia-Van-Haaften/ dp/0393292789

I am the preschool coordinator and nursery teacher at the American School of Puerto Vallarta. Orchestra Concert

few weeks ago I received an email from my daughter’s fabulous singing teacher, Sharon, asking me if she might consider being part of the Puerto Vallarta Orchestra’s Christmas concert. They needed two girls to sing a duet part for one song, and she knew my daughter would do a wonderful job. She asked me to speak to her and then get back to her as soon as possible. Let me tell you a bit about my talented daughter. She is the offspring of a gifted musician, her father, and has inherited both a remarkable ear for pitch and a strong, lovely voice. She has been singing as long as she has been speaking, and shower time in our house is always filled with a variety of interpretations from musicals like Hamilton, or Queen anthems, or a bit of Lady Gaga. She has always inherited a certain level of shyness from both parents, lucky her. I wasn’t sure what she would say when I asked her about using that voice to mesmerize an audience that could number in the three or four hundreds. So I sort of casually mentioned

that her singing teacher (whose opinion is one of the most important in life at the moment) would like her to sing a duet at the orchestra concert. She said “Oh ok. If she needs me to, I can”. She sounded a little hesitant, but I could tell there was a spark in there that wanted to give it a go. I added a few more details, about the fact that another girl she knew would be her partner and about the fact that we had a lot of time to practice. She nodded a more confident affirmation and said “Ok.” Before you tell me I’m a terrible parent for not phrasing it like a request instead of a statement, understand that I already know I’m terrible. This is the dilemma, folks: what are you supposed to do when you know (because you’ve been there) they are going to love something but they don’t know it yet (because they’ve never been there)? I’ll tell you what you do. You take her at her word, you write back the singing teacher and you say yes. And then you close your eyes and say a prayer that you haven’t made a huge mistake that will come up again and again in your daughter’s future therapy sessions.

After a couple of weeks of rehearsing with her duet partner and her teacher at the piano, we were ready to rehearse with the entire orchestra. She was pretty nervous and chatted me up all the way to the rehearsal venue. I smiled and reassured her, but the hamster usually doing laps on the wheel that is my brain had jumped off and was gnawing on my stomach lining. All I could do was decide that she was going to be fine. We got there and I watched her stand, with her equally nervous twelve-year-old partner, in front of a full orchestra. She looked so small. She looked so vulnerable. Every internal organ inside my body was writhing and trying to wrap themselves into one tiny ball directly behind my left rib cage. But when she sang, she was grinning, because it sounded lovely and she knew it. She shared a secret smile with her duet partner, and they both looked like they were getting away with a really cool prank. They looked like they had just been offered a lifetime’s supply of chocolate Kinder eggs. Above all, they looked like they were having a lot of fun. Dear parents, so much of what we do involves guesswork. I can’t guarantee that you will absolutely know the moment they are ready to take a risk. I’m sorry to tell you that. Check your gut, pretend you’re sure, take their hand and step out together. I invite you all to share in the joy of music with her and the rest of the talented orchestra in their performances on Sunday, December 16, at 7pm at the American School of Puerto Vallarta or on Monday, December 17 at 7pm at Paseo de Cocoteros 67 in Nuevo Vallarta.

or those of you following my column, we have been remodeling a beautiful condo in Bucerias, Nayarit. This three-bedroom, ocean-front home was built and furnished in 2008. Our goal is to bring everything in on-time and on-budget so that the owners can list the condo for sale by January 1, 2019. Everything is ordered, in the process of being painted, stained and recovered. So far, the project is going along well, and we continue to check in with our suppliers to ensure things stay on course. While we await, let's go over some tips for staging a home. We will be using these principles as we start to add all furniture and decor items back in to the condo. Tips for staging your home for maximum results: • Make a great first impression. Whether you have a casa or a condo, the initial view of your home will set the tone. Potential buyers will decide in the first few seconds whether your place feels right for them. After that and during the rest of the tour they will be looking for evidence to reinforce their original decision. Make sure the exterior of your casa or condo is clean. Your front entrance should be appealing with nothing broken or old looking. If your front door needs a new coat of paint, do it! • Deep clean your home. Every

surface should sparkle. Windows, floors, counters, even grout should be scrubbed. If you have marble floors, have them polished, so they gleam. Hire someone to come in and do the cleaning you have been putting off. It is inexpensive in comparison to the returns you will reap. • Remove clutter. The less in your home, the better. Not sure how much you should remove? Stop in at a show home at a nearby new development to see how little clutter there is. Don't worry about having to throw out your favorite memories. That is why there are off-site storage companies. Since you are going to be moving and taking all personal items anyways, you may as well get a head start and box them up before you list your place. Most places sell within 30 days so even if you pay for off-site storage for a couple of months, it will quickly pay for itself. • Paint your interiors. Rich mid-tone neutrals are the way to go. Greys, beiges and taupe hues are excellent choices. Avoid all white unless you have an ultra-modern décor style. Avoid fun, bright colors that tend to appeal to a smaller number of people. • Remove personal items. New buyers do not want to see pictures of your grandkids or your pets. They want to picture themselves in the home. Cute and senti-

mental as they may be, these types of personal items are best tucked away while you are showing your home to potential buyers. • Pull your sofa and chair backs away from the wall. When you do this, your room will look more stylish and updated. • Style the table in your dining room. In the past, we decorated our dining tables with one oversized item. This approach can look uninviting and dated. Today's trend is to set the table as if you were getting ready to sit down to a full course dinner. You can also update it by lining up a few smaller pieces of décor down the center of the table. • Clean out your closets. Everyone looks inside closets when buying a home. Here is a rule of thumb: keep one-third of the closet space open so that it gives the impression of a lot more storage. • Move items off counter tops in kitchen and bathroom. Put away small appliances. Tuck away toothbrushes. It is always better to see more countertop space.

• Clean out the spare bedroom. The spare bedroom is often the catch-all for items we use from time to time such as beach floats and chairs, pool noodles and kid's toys. Shuffle them into storage. • Remove any pet toys, dishes, and beds. We all love our pets, but when buying a home, many buyers prefer one that has not animals. • Stage your outdoor areas. People move to the Bay of Banderas to live outside. Make sure you play up these spaces with beautiful toss cushions, rugs, candles, plants and flowers. They will spend their time outdoors, so it's important to make this space sing. Every owner wants to achieve the highest sale price so knowing how to present and stage your house is critical! n case you haven't noticed, I´m a massively oversized kid. Sure, masquerading as a philosopher is fun sometimes, but you know what's really fun? Going really fast in circles. That's why when I spotted this junior speedway pop up in the Macroplaza parking lot while hanging out an open bus window like an excited dog, I pushed all of my other planned Vallarta visits one slot down. No offense to any of the other fine establishments that will appear in this space over the coming weeks, it's just...y´know... go-karts, man. Go-karts. The Vibes: Despite my all-consuming need for speed, I had been bypassing the track on assorted errands and other adult appointments for about a week, which is about 3.6 years in impatient child time. In fact, even as of last Sunday night I found myself headed home after a long afternoon at a friend's house, where we spent hours eating brisket and space cookies. A perfectly legitimate and downright enjoyable use of a day, don't get me wrong--thanks yet again for the invite, Jimmy and Frankie--but as I stood on the Libramiento and watched every bus but mine roll by for about half an hour, I couldn´t help but feel a twinge of disappointment that I had let two weekends slip through my fingers without taking the wheel in them. At least, that's what would have happened if my recent hosts had not passed by in their car on the way to the store or something. They offered me a ride to a nearby dropoff point of my choosing, and thinking quickly, I chose Macroplaza instead of my home in Versalles. I even found a nice, mature excuse in the form of a trip to Wal-Mart for...um... kale and paper clips, yeah that's it. So responsible. After a short ride, we pulled into the parking lot and there it was... flashing lights, the strangely acceptable scent of gasoline, and that familiar lawnmower drone. I had arrived.

My friends, being people I choose to spend my time with, retain some youth in their spirits as well, and so the new attraction also appealed to their interests. While they deliberated on whether they had time for a few laps, my ears were listening out for a call to action. It came. ¨Tenemos un kart individual libre, quien quiere?¨ Yo. Seizing the opportunity, I tossed my backpack to the side, brushed past a waiting family of two-seat suckers and took my place at the starting line. After a quick sobriety test in the form of handing over 60 pesos in exact change, I was ready to make a run at the checkered flag in the Vallarta 5.

spend on the simulator. I took full advantage of their inexperience, weaving into the tiniest passing lanes at speeds that were just enough to put a bit of flutter into my head tassels. I masterfully protected the inside with precision turns and a very sparing use of the brake. I even gently nudged a rival into the wall because as any NASCAR fan knows, if it ain't rubbin´, it ain't racin´. Captain Falcon was here for Victory Lane. Lap 3 went as smoothly as the first...better even, as I began to pass a few drivers for a second time. The gap between yours truly and the next kart began to widen, and as I hit the turn to pass the starting line for a fourth time I couldn't have been feeling more in control...that is, until a miscalculated hair adjustment sent my racing goggles flying. They hung in the air for an instant, then an eternity before hitting the speedway surface with the sound of a meteor strike. Instantly, panic set in. These weren't just any racing goggles, they had sentimental value...a painstakingly crafted custom pair made from about 150 pesos and a piece of my perspective...this was no place for our time together to end. Skidding to a stop, I leaped out

I even gently nudged a rival into the wall because as any NASCAR fan knows, if it ain’t rubbin´, it ain’t racin´. The Vices: It was all SnG until I actually stepped onto the track... that's when things got cinematic. My vision narrowed to widescreen as I lowered myself into the seat, choosing a kart behind the one in front of the pack to have a better chance at a red shell to knock out the leader on the home stretch. Veteran move. Through my racing goggles I cast a gaze around the track...a crowd of spectators too young or ‘too old’ to compete looked on with interest as the drivers began to take their marks. My grasp on the wheel tightened to a white-knuckle grip-okayfine, not so much--but I did feel my heart start to pump faster as I awaited the signal. No mistaking it...I was alive and feeling lucky. The moment the starter twitched, I stomped a size 12.5 on the gas pedal and leaned into the first turn. I was pleasantly surprised to feel the engine accelerate gamely under my ideal 100kg test weight. The rest of the field was mostly populated by smaller children, who should be ashamed of their driving skills with all those hours they

of the driver's seat and onto the track and scrambled frantically back to the point where they had fallen. Luckily I was so far ahead of the pack that I had time to accomplish the task before hopping back into the Mach 5 and placing the pedal to the floor once more. As I climbed out of the kart after a grueling 10-minute race, I couldn't help wishing the ride had been longer...which, I guess, is a fairly positive review of a go-kart track in and of itself. The Verdict: I mean, sure...I would love some quarter-mile course with multiple elevation changes and non-lethal booby traps, but this will do just fine until that comes to town and we should all support it in the meantime. One may or may not be able to slip an attendant a crispy cien for a few dozen extra laps. All I know for sure is whenever I have some time to kill in the area of Macroplaza, I´ll be honing my championship skillset in high-performance superkarts...bet you can't catch me there. Hola, soy Marcella Castellanos. I´m a bilingual Mexican - Californian, living in Puerto Vallarta for a decade. 6 Steps for Transitioning to a Vegan Lifestyle

I

f you want switch to a vegan lifestyle but you find it difficult in a meat-centric country like Mexico, the following steps will help you feel more empowered and confident to make the change: 1) Know your why Is it to take a stand against animal cruelty? You want to mitigate the environmental impact raising animals for food can have the planet? Or you want to improve your health and vitality? - all of those reasons are valid. Think about what the reason is for you and then write it down. Referring back to this will be important to keep you on track when challenges come up. 2) Even though it's the cultural norm, times are changing The indigenous people of Mexico enjoyed a largely plant-based diet until the Spanish conquest of the 16th century when Europeans brought over domesticated animals - cows, pigs, goat, chickens, sheep. Since then, eating animals has been going on for hundreds of years. Undoing years of cultural and media conditioning in your life can be done and it starts with your own intention to do so. I grew up with my parents owning a Mexican restaurant, and I'm now vegan anything is possible. 3) You don't have to give up Mexican food you love It seems I've been witnessing a compassion renaissance that began a few years ago here in Puerto Vallarta. You can find traditional Mexican dishes such as carnitas, tacos al pastor, and pozole made from "yaca" (jackfruit in English), delicious vegan chilaquiles, and vegan cheeses that don't make you miss a thing. Becoming vegan isn't about giving up your favorite foods. It's about getting creative and adding back delicious foods to nourish your body.

4) Ask the waiter when eating out If you're at a restaurant that is not specifically vegan or vegetarian, don't be afraid to ask for vegan options on the menu. Since beans are usually present on the menu "frijoles sin manteca"(beans without lard) are a common request. Avocados grow in abundance and are very affordable and corn tortillas are typically made from crushed corn and water. Many restaurants are already starting to carry delicious plant-based options. 5) Join your local vegan/ vegetarian facebook group There you will find options, inspiration and people that are likeminded probably having similar challenges and triumphs. Vegetarian and Vegan Puerto Vallarta is a Facebook group that has grown steadily since its inception. Healthy Living Meetups are also another option. Seek out local resources, and people to help you on your journey. 6) Support veggie stores and restaurants Planeta Vegetariano, Pinche Vegano, Macai, Playa Detox, Organic Select, Salud Superfood, The Green Place, Mary's Vegetarian, Gingerveggie, Xtreme Performance are just a few establishments that cater to veggie lovers. Every time you shop, you are voting with your dollars. The more you move your money towards compassion and justice, the more of that you'll see in your lifetime.

We have small size t-shirts that are just perfect for young people. The caps are quite a hit this season as are our 2019 calendars. This coming Saturday say hello to our stellar volunteers Pat and David. Thanks so much in advance for your purchases and donations. It is a win-win for everyone! ntreamigos is the name of the wonderful Community Centre in San Pancho, an hours drive north of Puerto Vallarta. The word translates to “Between Friends” and the place translates much volunteer help from the community into making San Pancho a better place to live. Four friends and I, all members of the International Friendship Club, visited Entreamigos a couple of weeks ago and were amazed at the thought and action that has gone into the recycling program at the centre and around town. If they can do it, why cant we? If we want to preserve and protect the places our kids play and swim why don’t we care about recycling and preserving the planet? In San Pancho, Entreamigos is the centre for recycling. They have

Dec. 13 - 19, 2018 www.vallartatribune.com

constructed and distributed more than a hundred garbage and recycling bins around the streets of this small town and, every morning, a couple of employees make a run in a pick-up truck to empty the bins. They haul their treasures back to Entreamigos and sort the plastic from the glass and the cardboard. When the centre has enough to warrant a collection by the recycling company they call and arrange for it to happen. Entreamigos organizes recycling pick ups at local restaurants, businesses and schools and residents can drop off their recycling at the the Recycling collection centre ,at the back of Entreamigos, or in one of the many recycling canisters located around San Pancho. The centre also has a gift shop that sells products made by

staff and volunteers from recycled material. There are dogs, cut out of plastic bottles, with strings attached that can be pulled by toddlers. Beautiful glasses are made from recycled wine bottles and etched with company logos or birthday wishes. Ladies in the workshop make belts, bracelets and purses from soda can tabs. All the proceeds from the sales go to support the Entreamigos centre. The picture attached to this article shows the bottle drop a couple of weeks ago. Imagine that to be 140 larger than shown here. Puerto Vallarta’s population is, according to the lates statistics I could find on the internet, 140 time larger than that of San Pancho. They recycle bottles, plastic and cardboard but, as far as I know, nobody here does . Not the timeshares, not the condos, not individuals and not the hotels. Imagine all of our recyclable material being recycled and reused. Why is that not happening? Is it because we don’t care about each other or about the planet? I don’t think so. People in San Pancho are only different to those in Puerto Vallarta. They take action and we don’t. Does anyone have any ideas? If so please send them to the International Friendship Club by visiting their website http://www.ifcvallarta.com/class_contact.cfm. That seems to be one way to collect good ideas that could be acted upon.

collars, harnesses and leashes; toys and more toys! both stuffed and hard plastic (no soft plastic as they can chew off pieces and swallow); large towels; blankets; sweaters and coats; post-surgical cones (both the cone shaped and donut inflatable ones). Our rescues are now fed a total raw diet so please refrain from bringing any dog food or treats. The mission of SPCA de PV is to help fund and promote sterilization, adoption and healthcare efforts for companion animals in the Puerto Vallarta area, with the goal of eliminating the euthanasia of healthy and adoptable animals. An Implausible Partnership

By Victor Adrian Aguirre

“We’re all working together; that’s the secret.” -Sam Walton

W

hat do a retired businessman/ former U.S. Army lieutenant, a Mexican Police Commander and an ex-gang member have in common? Everything, it seems. This unlikely of trios started Educacion y Deportes Para Una Vida Mejor (Education and Sports for a Better Life) recently with great ideas in mind. Their non-profit is currently in the process of becoming registered in Mexico as a charity (Asociacion Civil). The founders of the association, Victor Adrian Aguirre Roman (ex-gang member), Thomas Mueller (former Army Lieutenant) and Puerto Vallarta Police Commander Agustin Ramirez have created a program that offers free educational and sports opportunities to kids living in some of the poorest areas of Puerto Vallarta. The organization offers children from low income families educational and sports opportunities that would otherwise not be available to them. Through these education and sports activities they teach values, discipline, character, self- respect, respect for others and service to the community. They also encourage and motivate children to stay in school and to stay away from drugs, gangs and violence. The initial program was the establishment of a soccer league called Club Deportivo Vallarta. During 2018 this soccer program has worked with over 300 boys and girls, mostly living in the

lower income neighborhoods between Magisterio, Volcanes and Coapinole. Their league’s soccer seasons correspond to the school year. The first season starts in late August and ends in mid-December. The next season runs from January to June, and during the summer vacation, they offer a more informal session called Mundialito. During the regular seasons, players are divided into teams based on age; 9- 10-year old’s (Peewees), 11-13 and 14-17. They typically have 15 to 20 teams total. Each team has practice two hours per day, two or three times per week. Each Saturday every team plays in at least one game and at the end of each season there is a championship tournament with the winning teams receiving trophies. Their 8 coaches are all salaried and selected based on their skills as youth soccer coaches and their commitment to teaching the values of the organization. Practices are held at various neighborhood soccer fields close to where the kids live and games are played at a soccer field accessible to everyone. In conjunction with Children’s Shelter of Hope Foundation (U.S. non-profit), The Seaver Foundation (from England) and La Vina church (here in Mexico), this association has also begun a before-and-after school educational program to help children and teenagers with their homework or with subjects

they are struggling with. There are currently 59 students enrolled in this educational program. All the kids enrolled in this program come from an area known as “the dump” because the city dump used to be there. At La Vina church, these boys and girls have 2 paid teachers, a volunteer/representative from The Seaver Foundation and Beatriz Flores, a psychologist, working with them. They attend classes Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. They also get a hot meal every day sometimes this is the ONLY meal they eat during the course of the day. The educational programs will be expanded to include computer classes for teenagers once funding is obtained. This unlikely trio is reaching out to the Puerto Vallarta community and the international community to ask for financial support for their worthwhile program. The financial needs to operate this program fully and help the kids in these areas are many: teacher salaries; food to feed the 59 students in the before/ after school program; coaches’ salaries; referee salaries; uniforms; practice vests; soccer balls; practice cones; nets; field maintenance, etc. The “escuelita” is also in need of white boards, a CD player, games and puzzles, books in Spanish, children’s scissors, and other basic school supplies. If you have any of these items to donate please contact Beatriz Flores at 322-205-3313.

f you don’t yet know them yet, Media Luna is a group made up of two brothers, Caleb and Jair Cabrera and their cousin Jonatan Gibran. The young men, originally from the state of Hidalgo, started their career together in 2014 and had been setting their adopted home of San Miguel de Allende on fire for the past several years combining gypsy rumba, flamenco, rock and huapango when they arrived last January and took Puerto Vallarta by storm with their original compositions and innovative arrangements of traditional pieces. Last year’s shows in the cabaret at Incanto were extremely popular. Caleb enjoys surprising his audiences with invited guests who make the show even more spectacular. Media Luna will perform at Incanto (Insurgentes #109) this year every Thursday evening at 7:00 PM and December 27 at 9:30 PM. Along with the great music that they have thrilled listeners with in the past, Jair tells us that we can expect some completely new musical creations. In addition to their performances at Incanto, the group will perform Sundays from 1-3 in the luscious natural setting of the relatively new venue Babel Bar on Isla Cuale (Aquiles Serdan #437 next to the River Cuale). There they light up the setting with their incredible energy and guitar skills with pieces ranging from Jair’s dramatic composition, El Bravo, to the fiery Mexican traditional, El Cascabel. A wonderful way to enjoy a Sunday afternoon. Of course we don’t want to leave out Cuates y Cuetes next to the

pier in the Romantic Zone where they will entertain us on Tuesday evenings from 6-8 PM. No better way to watch the sunset than with their exciting and charged guitar music accompanying the extravagant show of color we regularly enjoy as the sun descends over the Banderas Bay. People of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle rejoice! Media Luna will play at Tree House Bar (Coral #66) on December 15 and 31. Call for details: 322 182 4026. For those who have been following my articles regarding the fiery flamenco group Tatewari and their 12th anniversary party and CD release I can report that both the concert at Tree House Bar on Thanksgiving in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle and the December 8th concert at Incanto in Puerto Vallarta left audiences floating on clouds! The beauty of the original music and the camaraderie of the group had fans clamoring for more. Many of my friends said the concerts were the best they had seen. As a special treat in Puerto Vallarta at Incanto, Tatewari brought as a guest performer the renowned flamenco guitarist Wolfgang “Lobo” Fink. Together they gave us a performance we will not forget. Dancer Gabriela Raigaza joined them for a magnificent performance of Asturias. We hope to see much more of this! Tatewari has their next concert at Tree House Bar in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle on December 17 at 7:00PM and Lobo and Esaú will thrill us with several concerts in 2019 beginning at Incanto on January 13. Let’s get those dates on our calendars!

Dan Lauzon:

The World’s Best Sinatra

I

n the 40s, crooner Frank Sinatra was “the idol of the bobbysoxers”. He became popular first with the Harry James big band, then beginning in 1946, as a solo artist. Over the next five decades, he sold more than 150 million records and became one of the top selling recording artists of all time. In the 50s, Las Vegas became the “go to” place for gambling and entertainment and its showrooms needed big name artists who would appeal to mature, adult audiences. Frank Sinatra fit the bill and soon became a top attraction. He and other stars like Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford became known as “the rat pack”, often making impromptu appearances at each others shows, to the delight of audiences.

Over the next four decades, he appeared in numerous movies and TV specials, winning eleven Grammys. To exercise more control over his career, he formed his own production company and record label and invested in real estate, night clubs, and casinos. He liked to say “I did some things right and some things wrong, but at least I did it my way”. Toronto based tenor Dan Lauzon, a popular figure in the Canadian entertainment scene, has had a long and illustrious career as an actor, singer and band leader. And at a point in his life when most people think of retiring, he launched a second career to pay tribute to his greatest influence, Frank Sinatra. Dan's Sinatra tribute has become far more successful

Merv Buchanan merv@uvs.com than he had ever dreamed. It has given him the opportunity to sing with some of the world's greatest orchestras, as a solo artist in small, intimate lounges and supper clubs, on television and on tours throughout the Americas and overseas. But his biggest thrill as a tribute artist came in 2018 when he won first prize in an international Frank Sinatra Tribute Artists competition, in Sinatra's home town, Hoboken New Jersey. It just doesn't get any better! On December 20, Dan performs his 30-song tribute to Sinatra at The Luna Lounge, in Bucerias and on December 22, at the Incanto Theatre, in Puerto Vallarta. SHANIA

Annette Lafond’s award winning tribute to Shania Twain Merv Buchanan merv@uvs.com

S

he's beautiful and she's talented. She could be country music superstar Shania Twain's stunt double. And since 1999, she's fooled the eyes and ears of audiences across Canada, the US and Mexico with her wonderful interpretation of Shania Twain in concert. Of course she has the songs down pat and wears Shania's trademark wardrobe, right down to those impossibly high heels, but

there's more to her show than that. Thousands of performances have also allowed Annette to master Shania's mannerisms, stage banter and uniquely Canadian sense of humour. From Legion talent contests to television shows like Dick Clark's “Your Big Break”, there's been no stopping Annette. Audiences loved her stage presence, friendly, outgoing style and easy way with a song. Concert promoters

took notice too. And it wasn't long before her phone was ringing with a steady stream of booking offers. Over the past 20 years things haven't changed much. Annette's success has been aided in no small part by her husband Richard who leads their five piece band and manages their business affairs. Together, they have toured extensively, playing everywhere from casinos, clubs and rodeos, to festivals, fairs and

corporate events. “Shania” is an accurate reflection of Shania Twain's musical career as it developed, covering the hit songs her fans all know and love. Whether in concert with her band, or solo in a small supper club, Annette performs each song with style, panache and a touch of humour. And it's not unusual for her to occasionally belt one out while sitting on a red-faced audience member's lap.

Attend one of Annette's shows and you will soon agree that “Shania” is the definition of highenergy, on your feet, crowd pleasing fun! Shania appears at The Luna Lounge in Bucerias on Sunday, December 16 and at Incanto, in Puerto Vallarta on Wednesday, December 19. Busing Banderas Bay Bruce Howells

busbanderasbay@gmail.com

Bruce is a retired Canadian, who along with his wife Velma, took a “mulligan” on life and escaped the cold of Canada and settled in the Vallarta area. Fulfilling a retirement dream of not driving anymore, Bruce will use public transportation to tour the bay and tell his tales here. Tips and itineraries welcome.

Sampling Vallarta’s Rock Music

Kelly’s Pour Favor - Live Music Schedule

V

allarta maintains an excellent system of public transportation, with many routes running thru Centro and ending up in Old Town. We are impressed with the rock music venues available from our one bus ride. Some have great food, some, so-so food, all have cold beer, tequila, and live music. My mission is to help you discover the talented bands and ambiance of Vallarta’s music scene that enable a “Disney” for adults’ environment courtesy of any Centro bus. STOP1: Plaza Peninsula for McCarthy’s Irish Pub featuring live rock music, highlighted currently by Tequila Rush on Saturdays at 9 pm. STOP2: Continuing towards the Malecon, we arrive at Blake’s, near the Villas Vallarta block where Wednesday afternoons

(3 – 6 pm), Tres Cuatro hosts an open house on the sidewalk. Always interesting and entertaining. Recent rumors have more afternoon music on its way. Entering the cobblestoned roads of the 5 De Decimbre colonia, the former “Pemex”, now “Shell”, is an important landmark. STOP3: Lukes Bar is located past the Shell on Peru and Honduras and features afternoon music. STOP4: Captain Don’s, at 129 Honduras, one block from the Shell, towards the ocean, sponsors music Tuesday and Thursday afternoon (3 – 6 pm) as well as Wednesday and Friday evening (8 – 11 pm). Great food specials and buckets of beer, this is a must visit. STOP5: When the bus arrives on Morelos Ave, disembark at

“Allende”, and heading towards the Malecon, you encounter the Jazz Foundation at 116 Calle Allende. I am not currently aware of their music schedule, but check it out. STOP6: Devils Live Bar and Grill, at 527 Morelos features live bands, karaoke, sports bar and pub food. Excellent location, cool décor, sometimes early music, sometimes late, sometimes both. STOP7: Murphy’s Irish Pub, at 484 Morelos, a third-floor walkup that supports hard rock and late night music from Vallarta’s own Tres Cuatros and others. STOP8: Crossing the bridge into Old Town, disembark at the first chance, cross the street and look for El Sonador, 229 Ignacio L. Vallarta. Recent changes to noise bylaws have canceled music at this venue. STOP9: Two doors down is the Roxy Rockhouse, a Vallarta legend, with a normal start for music around 11pm. With the recent success of the Gecko band packing the house Thursdays at 8 pm, plus the new noise by-laws, perhaps additional 8 pm music is around the corner at the revered Roxys? STOP10: Disembark past Roxys, at Lazaro Cardenas, turn right and welcome to Kelly’s Pour Favor, showcasing live music seven days a week. Great homey food, free popcorn, plus a smokefree environment with music 8 - 11 pm MT (Mexican time). Three of my favorite bands play here, another must visit location. STOP11: Two blocks past Kelly’s at 287 Basilio Badillo and welcome to Nacho Daddy, home to live music, live theater, and Tex-Mex food. STOP12: A block up from Insurgentes, at 403 Francisco I Madero, Gringo Loco, another local favorite with live music, pub grub and a cozy setting. These are most of the live rock venues we have visited via the “R12”, Centro bus except for Nacho Daddy; we had to walk two blocks. Since I started this column, one venue has fallen victim to new noise bylaws (Stop8), two others are currently not open (Stop5/6). Keep on Rockin’, No country covers. Remember to view the Tribune’s Live Music Calendar in print or online. Ask your favorite bars to keep their listings up to date. Ed. Note: you can view all the live music listings on page 37 of this week’s newspaper or online at vallartatribune.com

O

ne of the best-attended shows I have seen in years was ‘The Nutcracker’ at Teatro Vallarta. I saw more people I knew at this one production of the Jalisco State Ballet than two seasons rolled into one. It was dreamy with gorgeous costumes and metallic snow. Nutcracker is on every budding dancer’s list; one may start as a mere mouse but one day? Who knows? A Baryshnikov of the future? Therein lies the magic of this ballet, performed every Christmastime. ‘Nutcracker’ was also the first “Sher” Production by Teatro Vallarta’s Director, Salvador Luna. We can expect more classic entertainment from Sher Productions. Bravo, Salvador. For the first time, Miss Conception is in Vallarta for Christmas and has a new show to celebrate that milestone. Canadian Kevin Levesque, has been an integral part of The Palm Cabaret for years and he has never looked more at home than in this newly renovated space. You can catch ‘Twas the Night before Miss Conception’ Thursdays and Mondays until the end of December. Over at Incanto, ‘Naked Boys Singing,’ has been held over, and rightly so. I have to be honest: there are a couple of cast members that I just wanted to see naked, okay? I was fully prepared to be forgiving as far as the singing goes – one can’t expect everything to be good,

right? I was so impressed from start to finish. Both Bob Bruneau and Jean-Guy Comeau had their work cut out for them to whip these Mexican (and one Salvadorian) young men into English-singing parts that were clearly enunciated and devoid of Spanglish-isms. There was no faltering and certainly no shyness! The lyrics were clever and well-sung by all. The staging was inventive, the accompaniment by Jay Gee on piano, wonderful as only he can do, and roars of laughter filled the theatre all night long. This is a deliciously fun production: Go. Still at Incanto, Media Luna, has returned to Vallarta from San Miguel de Allende and have brought more family musicians to help round out the sound. They tell me more special guests will be added every week, so no reason to just see them once! If you appreciate fine guitar work, you will adore Media Luna. COMINGS: To the Boutique Theatre, Saturday, December 15, at 8:30 pm. Those crazed Princesas Desesperadas get together for ‘La Noche - ¿Buena?’ I can’t imagine the script changes which is why I am compelled to go after seeing the PD’s more times than is probably healthy. A funnier group of four would be impossible. Do yourself a favor and go. Yes, it’s in Spanish. Above Nacho Daddy on Basilio Badillo.

Geo and Luna Rumba Return

Life in the Slow Lane Kelly Wilson

mybucerias404@gmail.com

Upon retiring in Ontario, Kelly and her husband finally arrived in Puerto Vallarta. Via a one way ticket during the summer of 2017, they now call Bucerias home. As avid adventurers, they enjoy exploring the entire Banderas Bay area. Kelly owns an on-line career coaching business, and spends time volunteering for various local organizations.

M

K

ind, humble, considerate and talented beyond words; you’ll find Geo’s backstory on my blog. Today I’m excited to share the big news for this season… the triumphant return of ‘Luna Rumba’. Geo shared; “After a three year hiatus my music focus was to find a different path. Always very interested in applying technology in music I dabbled with ‘loopers’ allowing me to record a phrase and play it back instantly. To my knowledge, nobody in the world had used this as a primary function to produce music. My other band ‘Duende’, a fantastic musical experiment seems to hit a positive nerve with the audience. However; I and the rest of the band, started to miss the “organic” nature of the Luna Rumba experience. When a new singer/guitarist that we like emerged and expressed interest in joining us, Luna Rumba was revamped, commitments for this season were made and I considered new music. Travel inspires me. Last year, I incorporated my experience from Africa to Duende’s music. African rhythms and melodies inspired me to always share experiences that impress me from my travels with the audience. In fact, it could be considered a core intention. I believe that sharing is a way to give a more meaningful gift of music… hoping that by re-creating these experiences through music allows others to feel close to “being there” with me vicariously. This summer we had the incredible opportunity to sail around the Mediterranean on our new catamaran. From Spain to Sicily visiting port to port; through strokes of luck and intention we found ourselves, again, exposed to incredible music. Luna Rumba has always been about World Music and here it was. In fact, the opening song for the new Luna Rumba is inspired by an event we witnessed in Valencia,

Dec. 13 - 19, 2018 www.vallartatribune.com

Spain - a parade that occurred during the “Festival of Moros and Christians” where elaborately costumed Spanish people of Arab decent marched and danced to epic and timeless music from long ago. So much inspiration for the new music… from the dancing horses of Spain, to the bouzouki of Greece, to a lovely young lady who showed up to jam at our boat in an anchorage playing incredible Celtic fiddle. We’re excited to continue producing music with Duende and to reignite Luna Rumba. I’m delighted to get to play with the great Lobo and our Arte Puro concept; no rehearsals and everything created “in the moment”. La Cruz has been the perfect place to incubate the music, thanks in no small part to the history of music in this village that, I believe, is unique in many ways. From the

beginnings with Willie & Lobo, Latcho & Andrea, Philo’s Bar and other live music venues, to the birth of local acts like Tatewari, La Cruz has been an oasis for live music of all kinds. Again this season expect creative, different and innovative sounds.” Speaking of an Oasis, fabulous news is that all of Geo’s bands will perform concerts at Los Arroyos Verdes located in Bucerias; The Moonlight Concert Series! “Our dedication to innovation and quality has brought new entertainment ideas and possibilities. I love to look into the faces of our audience… believing the music has connected us together in joy, in sadness or reflection and wonder. It is a gift that gives back immediately and I love that. I don’t know how long I can do this, but I hope I can continue for a long time.” Geo Uhrich

y husband and I vacationed around Banderas Bay for several years. Of course, we knew this is where we would retire. In July 2017, that blessed day came. We took the leap and moved from Ontario, Canada to beautiful Bucerias, Nayarit. We sold our home, our two vehicles and our five children. I have found this move to be very rewarding, and at times, quite educational. I am so pleased to have this opportunity, and I look forward to sharing stories with you. We recently drove to Sam’s Club, me with shopping list in hand. We’d previously spotted the pork ribs displayed at the meat counter and decided this will be the day we bring some home for dinner. I’d been daydreaming of the wonderful aroma and flavour of freshly BBQ’d ribs. Oh no, the stars are not aligned, there are no ribs for sale today. We needed plenty of other things so continued with our shopping. Without ribs, though, I still had to figure out tonight’s dinner. We toured the store, adding necessary (and unnecessary) items to our cart, including potatoes. That particular day I had a hankering for comfort food. Mmmm, potatoes. Cooked any which way, always delish! (We dab on fat free yogurt and pretend it’s sour cream). As our merchandise passed through the cash, the cashier was animatedly chattering away to us in Spanish. Of course, we’re looking at her like we don’t have a clue what she’s saying - ‘cause we don’t. I apologized in Spanish and explain, “No hablo Español”. She holds up a pointer finger (international language) and leaves for what seemed like quite a few Mexican moments. The customers in line behind us were not impressed, having to wait. Haven’t you always been that shopper? The one who inevitably

waits in the wrong, long line? After a while the cashier returned with a roasted chicken. Umm, we’re confused. Through her hand signals we came to understand that the case of Coca-Cola we bought comes with a free roasted chicken. Aha! Dinner was decided on the spot...cold chicken with potato salad! Speaking of apologizing in Spanish, have you tried the language learning app, “Duolingo?” I’ve been using the app to practice Spanish for over a year now. I can’t say I’m a fast learner. I am still limited to ordering food and drinks, oh, and, “Donde esta el bano?” I get a kick out of ordering my meal completely in Spanish, feeling proud of my second language accomplishment. Then the server will reply, “Would you like your eggs over easy? Or medium?”. Difficult to practice when there’s so many English speaking people. Anyway, one thing I’ve straightened out is my misuse of the word “doscientos”. For the longest time I thought that meant, “I’m sorry”, used when you accidentally bump into someone in a crowded market. I’ve since learned doscientos, translated to English, means “two hundred”. When bumping into people in a crowd, the correct apology is “lo siento”. All this time I’ve been bumping into people, saying, “two hundred, two hundred”. Now I understand the strange glances I received, so unusual from such a friendly populace. I can’t wait for Arte y Vino at Sandrina’s Restaurant & Boutique on Lázaro Cárdenas in Bucerias this weekend. It’s always a great time painting and chatting, and making new friends. And, don’t forget to vote for your favourite person, place or thing in the 2nd Annual Vallarta Tribune Readers’ Choice Awards, until January 12, 2019. w w w. v a l l a r t a t r i b u n e . c o m / best-in-Banderas-Bay-2019
