VOTING FOR A HEALTHY PLANET THROUGH PATRONAGE & RECOMMENDATIONS
U
ntil recently, most of us have associated the numerical sequence “20/20” with eyesight more so than with a calendar year. As we begin the year 2020, we may wish to look forward with hope and commitment toward improvement over human society’s collective impact on the planet. This past century, we’ve treaded quite heavily and appear to be in a rut of consuming far more than nurturing or encouraging renewal. However, here in the Banderas Bay region, “though much is taken, much abides,” to quote Tennyson. As we enjoy the abundant natural splendor surrounding us, we can make commitments from small daily decisions to impactful lifelong choices that set our collective course toward a future of hope and sustainability. After resolving to these kinds of daily decisions and lifelong choices, we can vote with our wallets through our purchases. Through the Vallarta Tribune, we also have a way to influence other people’s choices through our recommendations. In the last two winter seasons, we’ve surveyed thousands of people whose votes determine the Best Restaurant, Best Happy Hour, Best Art Gallery, Best Real Estate Agent, Best Tour Guide, and much, much more.
In all, we cover over 150 categories of favorites all across the region from Cabo Corrientes through Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta, continuing past Banderas Bay to Riviera Nayarit destinations like Sayulita and San Pancho. Beginning the first week of December 2019, we will start the voting on the third Reader’s Choice Awards, so share your favorites with us locals and our visitors from all around the world! Sincere thanks to you who voted, and with that, have shared your love of Puerto Vallarta. This guide is loaded with information about local businesses that help keep our region a leading tourist destination worth returning to time and time again. As you support the winners through your patronage, be sure to tell them that you found them through the Vallarta Tribune and the Best of Banderas Bay Reader’s Choice Awards Guide.

WELCOME TO
PUERTO VALLARTA & RIVIERA NAYARIT TIME ZONE: The entire state of Jalisco is on Central Time, as is the southern part of the state of Nayarit. BUSES: A system of urban buses can take you from one end of the bay to the other and all the spots in between. If you’re going further north than San Pancho or south past El Tuito, you’ll need to head to the main bus terminal to catch a bus. TAXIS: There are set rates within defined zones of town. Do not enter a taxi without agreeing on the price with the driver first. Make a note of the taxi number in case you leave something behind. Drivers often do not carry change. UBER: New in 2017, Uber is typically cheaper than a taxi. The benefits of using Uber are set fares and the ability to follow up directly with your driver if there is an incident or you leave an item behind. DRINKING WATER: While Puerto Vallarta’s water has been awarded a certification of purity for the past two decades, the quality of the water tested at the source varies greatly from what
comes out of the tap at the other end. So do be careful. If you want to be doubly sure, you can pick up bottled water just about anywhere. MONEY EXCHANGE: Usually a bank will give you a higher rate of exchange than the exchange booths (Casa de Cambio). You will need your passport. Better yet, use- your bank card to withdraw funds from any ATM. Note that ATM’s in the banks are the safest to -use and charge lower fees.
attention to your surroundings. Know where you are going. Pay your bills (and don't forget to tip). And have fun! DRINKING AND DRIVING: First off – just don’t. The consequences are not worth it. There are many checkstops on the weekends, and you will be asked to blow if they suspect you have been drinking.

Shopping for Furniture for Your Home
R
iviera Nayarit is experiencing another boom in real estate. Developers are building; Mexicans, Americans, and Canadians are buying. Some purchase to retire here full or part-time. Some buy as a vacation home and rent it out when not in use. Some are purchasing purely as a rental property from a business perspective. No matter how you prefer to use your new home in Riviera Nayarit, you will likely be in the market for furniture. Outfitting a new home is a daunting task. The average home includes close to 2000 items when you add up all the things you need to make it operational! That includes all the big-ticket items such as a sofa or sectional, coffee and end tables, dining table and chairs, bedroom suites, artwork, rugs, lighting and lamps, and appliances. It also includes all the small items such as glassware, dishware, silverware, bed linens, towels, pots and pans, and décor items. That is a lot to purchase and can result in a lot of stress. First, most people have limited time. It is near impossible to get everything purchased, delivered, and set up in that time frame. Most folks do not speak fluent Spanish to be able to converse with salespeople. Almost all new furniture buyers are unfamiliar with where to find reputable furniture and décor stores in Vallarta or Guadalajara. That will most certainly take stress levels up a couple of notches! Luckily, there are some options available to make furnishing your home not only a more relaxed experience, but also a more enjoyable one. There are numerous interior decorators and designers in Riviera Nayarit.
10 | VALLARTA TRIBUNE BEST OF BANDERAS BAY WINNERS 2019
Many have been here for over ten years, are familiar with the best materials to use for furniture, and are available to assist with creating a unique interior décor design based on your needs and décor preference. If you are looking to make your home in Mexico a standout, and you have the budget for design services, an interior decorator is an excellent way to go. Another easy yet less expensive way to furnish your home with a designer look is to purchase from a retailer who sells furniture packages. Furniture packages are generally available either by room or for the entire house. An interior decorator selects all the furniture and decor to create a complete look. It’s the best way to get a designer look at a fraction of the price. Whichever you choose, both handle the logistics of ordering the items on your behalf from manufacturers and getting them shipped to your home in Mexico. Most new furniture buyers underestimate how much of a service this is. The manaña approach of Mexico you enjoy when you are on holiday will frustrate you immensely when living here. Ask any person who has waited around their home for days for a delivery to arrive, and they will quickly tell you their horror stories. Shipments and deliveries come late, incorrect, and items are often damaged even if they do arrive. Having someone in charge of this for you will save you time, money, and stress. F

Protecting
Pacific Sea Turtles Four protected species lay eggs locally: the Olive Ridley, the green sea turtle, the leatherback, and the hawksbill.
O
ver one million sea turtles are liberated every year in Banderas Bay and Riviera Nayarit, which have become a sanctuary for these little chelonians thanks to the many turtle camps that dot its coastline. The sea turtle is so essential, in fact, that it is the official icon of Riviera Nayarit. Four protected species lay eggs here: the Olive Ridley, the green sea turtle, the leatherback, and the hawksbill. The most common is the Olive Ridley, which lays eggs three times a year producing an average of 100 eggs per nest, 80 percent of which hatch, though only one in one thousand turtles go on to reproduce. As each new generation of female turtles reaches maturity, they return to their beach of origin to lay their own eggs. The male turtles never return. Biologist Hermilo Esparza, Director of the Nuevo Vallarta Sea Turtle Protection and Conservation Center, explains that the official sea turtle release season begins during early August and ends in December. He explained the turtles arrive to lay their eggs in June; the hatchlings come 45 days later. Before they do, though, the staff from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) along with local volunteers set up watch on the beaches during the night to collect the eggs, protect them, and incubate them. Historically, Nuevo Vallarta’s beach registers the most significant number of arrivals in the region. The turtle camp is 14 km (8.6 mi) long (it’s been open for 25 years by the National Commission for Protected Natural Areas), registering an average of 5,500 nests,
12 | VALLARTA TRIBUNE BEST OF BANDERAS BAY WINNERS 2019
releasing between 300 thousand and 400 thousand hatchlings every year. According to data from the National Program for the Conservation of Sea Turtles, there were 51 thousand Olive Ridley nests registered in the Mexican Pacific in 2012; about ten thousand of these were on the beaches of Nuevo Vallarta. In Jalisco and Nayarit in 2017, over 3 million eggs were collected, hatched and released. Hermilo Esparza points out, however, that even though it might seem a large number, the truth is very few of them survive. It’s estimated that only one or two of every thousand hatchlings reaches maturity and returns to reproduce. This is why it’s so important for local residents and tourists to take simple actions to ensure the beaches are safe for returning mothers by avoiding pollution, especially with plastic bags and soda bottles. Sea turtles often confuse them with jellyfish, eat them, and die of asphyxiation. If you see a turtle emerge from the sea, it must be left alone, do not touch it as it can lose its sense of smell and get disoriented. The turtle should be treated with respect, watched quietly and left to its own devices. Besides the Nuevo Vallarta turtle camp, there are another ten camps strung out along the coastline and offer visitors the opportunity to release hatchlings. If you are interested in learning more, volunteering or participating in a turtle release event, you can speak with your hotel concierge or visit one of the local Turtle Rescue Camps.

Connecting Puerto Vallarta's Residents and Visitors with Nature at the Vallarta Botanical Garden
Robert Price
P
erhaps the most quoted phrase of Dr. Juan Luis Cifuentes Lemus, one of Mexico’s most distinguished biologists, and someone who has long called Puerto Vallarta home is, “Lo que se conoce, se quiere y lo que se quiere se cuida.” Translated to English, “That which we know, we love, and that which we love, we care for.” Since our very lives rely on nature, fostering this knowledge, love, and care is essential. This has become even more imperative as now over half the world’s population lives in cities—and most projections show this trend increasing to over two-thirds by 2050. Even as natural areas continue to suffer loss, deterioration, and fragmentation as a consequence of our increasing footprint on the planet, we are also ever more distanced from nature by our urban environments and lifestyles.
In an attempt to remedy this concerning trend, we at the Vallarta Botanical Garden are both conserving nature and fostering the knowledge, love, and care, as mentioned earlier. Chief among the most direct ways we are conserving nature is by expanding our forest preserve. Through the support of our members and specifically through a few critical donations, we have increased this area from about 8 hectares to nearly 30 in the last three years— that’s almost a 300 percent increase—and our goal is to keep this going with additional purchases. Our strategic priority is acquiring land with virgin forest along the Río Los Horcones, an essential local river whose future protection has been called into question by recent developments. When it comes to fostering knowledge, love, and care of nature, we, as staff of a botanical garden, provide a range of programs covering topics such as horticulture, botany, medicinal plants, to name just a few. But we realize that not everyone is as wild as us about plants. For this reason, we have developed a new tour of our forest preserve to explore the habitat and learn about the habits of one of the most charismatic wild animals in our hemisphere—the mighty jaguar! The jaguar is the largest predator in the Americas found from northern Argentina to the southwestern United States. But their size and power are not enough to save them in a human-dominated landscape. Because jaguars need vast stretches of healthy forests to survive, their numbers have been diminishing over the past several decades. Natural corridors connecting jaguar populations are at risk of being severed. Amazingly, despite proximity to the urban hub of Puerto Vallarta, jaguars are still present in our local forests. Just three kilometers away from the Vallarta Botanical Garden, and upstream of us along the Río Los Horcones, our neighbors in the Ejido of Emiliano Zapata routinely capture images with their camera traps, through a partnership they’ve had with CONAFOR for the past three years. Since August of 2018, Garden staff and volunteers have been camera trapping in the VBG’s forest preserve as well, through a partnership with Panthera México.

Photo: Grégoire Dubois As these dedicated conservationists review images each month, they’re eagerly awaiting the first documented proof of a jaguar on this property. In the meantime, they’ve captured dozens of pictures of various birds, deer, raccoons, coati, and even ocelots. So while their prize species still eludes them for the moment, they’re compiling essential data about the jaguar prey. Considering that a male jaguar’s territory can span over 100 square kilometers, and their preferences for travel and hunting along the forested edges of rivers, it’s only a matter of persistence, patience and perhaps a little luck before the jaguars documented in the nearby Ejido Emiliano Zapata trigger the camera traps in the Garden’s preserve and grace our photographic equipment with their likenesses. Now through the Garden’s new tour, “A Trip to Jaguar Country,” residents and visitors can explore this habitat with guides trained to interpret these forests through the perspective of the jaguar. Participants will hike along trails in this preserve, go tracking along the shores of the Río Los Horcones, and visit camera traps off the beaten path to download the latest images. The Garden does not keep wild animals in cages, so the chance of seeing a jaguar during this adventure is slim to none, but guests F
will go away with new knowledge and appreciation for this mighty cat and its critical importance to maintaining the ecological balance of our tropical forests. And remember: just because you didn’t see a jaguar doesn’t mean the jaguar didn’t see you! If the next time you talk about the Vallarta Botanical Garden and someone tells you they think plants are boring (they have lots to learn), tell them about “A Trip to Jaguar Country” and see if that’s more up to their speed. The more we learn about and appreciate the delicate complexity of our natural world, the more we stand a chance at protecting wildlife and preserving it as a legacy for future generations. This isn’t just the job of trained scientists and government officials—nature needs you to care too! To leave you with another quote by Vallarta’s celebrated Dr. Juan Luis Cifuentes Lemus, “No es un biólogo el que ostenta un titulo sino el que ama la vida.” Translated to English, “Being a biologist is not a matter of holding a title but of loving life.” “A Trip To Jaguar Country” and the “Botanical Delights Tour & Culinary Adventure” are both available to book by visiting: www.vbgardens.org VALLARTA TRIBUNE BEST OF BANDERAS BAY WINNERS 2019 | 15

Mosaic Workshops at Parque Lázaro Cárdenas
T
he largest art installation in Puerto Vallarta was launched in 2017 with the intent to mosaic tile the fixed installations and benches of the entire Lazaro Cardenas Park.
Spearheaded by Natasha Moraga, one of the most recognized names in the Puerto Vallarta art community for her signature mosaic style. Moraga’s public art installations can be seen all over town, from the Puerto Vallarta sign as you enter the city, to murals in the marina and the benches on the walkway to the pier.
Efforts to finish the project resume in November with the completion of the park scheduled for late spring. They offer workshops that will focus on the newly retrofitted planters that line the perimeter of Parque de los Azulejos. Last year they tiled the columns with designs reflecting the unique personalities and the things held dear by those who contributed; think peace signs, rainbows, dogs, roosters and butterflies, and Frida. This year, it’s all about the abstract in their planter workshops. Designs that flow, moving seamlessly from one thing to another, with less focus on depicting objects and more emphasis on colors and patterns.
The massive undertaking of reshaping and transforming Lazaro Cardenas Park is their most substantial undertaking yet. This exciting project invites visitors and residents to volunteer to helpFor more information on how you can participate For more information on how you can participate create this public art installation.

very year from late November until early April, the Humpback Whales make the Bay of Banderas their home. They come here to mate and return the next year to deliver their young and teach them how to swim in our calm and safe waters. Whether you witness one of these 40-ton gentle giants take to the air or experience a newborn calf learning to swim, every encounter will be etched into your memory forever.
But, as spectacular as the Humpbacks are, they aren’t the only game in town: dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays, seals, and more either pass through or stay yearround. Think of a day here as the equivalent of an African Safari ‌ on the water!

n keeping with the theme of this magazine, you should know about the best places to spend your tour budget. Sure, there are plenty to choose from; sightseeing, tequila tasting, swimming with the dolphins, and the list goes on. How about a genuine glimpse into the lives of local entrepreneurs, spending time in interior towns, decorating a piñata, tasting pure honey, and participating in food preparation?
Since 2014, Human Connections has found great success in promoting responsible tourism while introducing visitors to their various partners, whose talents range from making hammocks, rugs, ceramics, jewelry and carved wood, to catering, beekeeping, and farming.
Human Connections, based in Bucerias, is not your average tour operator. Open year-round under the leadership of a board of directors, a small handful of enthusiastic employees, and a group of dedicated volunteers, this non-profit organization offers a unique and enriching experience. Their pledge is this:
Both the Bucerias Cultural Tour and the Heartland Traditions Tour are interactive, giving adult and young visitors a hands-on approach as artists and restaurateurs share their personal histories and showcase their expertise. Hailing from many parts of Mexico, they have varied backgrounds, some having faced significant challenges, including learning to speak Spanish. Marie Heim came to Human Connections as a Global Fellow and now holds the position of Administrator.

The Beaches of Vallarta
OLAS ALTAS You may find the waters suitable for surfing or boogie boarding near the River Cuale. Olas Altas starts at Daiquiri Dick's excellent restaurant and runs north to the River. It attracts fewer sunbathers then Los Muertos but gets lively during holidays.
PLAYA CAMARONES Sometimes rocky, sometimes sandy, this beach hosts Barracudas and El Solar, two great beachfront places to hang, day or night. 28 | VALLARTATRIBUNE.COM/BEST-OF-BANDERAS-BAY-2020 28 | VALLARTA TRIBUNE BEST OF BANDERAS BAY WINNERS 2019
EL HOLI Located at the mouth of the Pitillal River in front of Plaza Peninsula. Occasionally has a good surf break.
BOCA DE TOMATES
A great spot to see crocodiles, eat fresh caught seafood and visit the Turtle Rescue Camp. The beach isn’t great for swimming as the Rio Ameca runs just north of it, making the waters muddy and the bottom silty. FB.COM/VTATRIBUNE F
GARZA BLANCA LOS MUERTOS Puerto Vallarta’s original beach, Playa los Muertos (Beach of the Dead), is action central for both locals and tourists alike. The flat stretch of sand starts south of the River Cuale and runs about 1.5 km (one mile) south while hugging the Romantic Zone. There is a non-stop parade of vendors hawking grilled fish on sticks, jewellery, sombreros and sarapes. You can take a banana-boat ride, rent a stand-up paddle board, try out the jet boots or go para-sailing. A string of restaurants run the length of the beach, most with umbrellas and lounges for daytime and romantic tables for candlelight dining.
White pristine sand, beautiful beach in front of the ritzy Garza Blanca resort.
PLAYA LAS GEMELAS The cleanest and most accessible beach south of Vallarta. A huge swath of fine white sand with lots of families having picnics on the weekends.
CONCHAS CHINAS South of Vallarta, this beach features hidden coves with crystalline water and millions of white shells broken and polished by the waves. The individual coves are ideal for secluded sunbathing and snorkeling. FB.COM/VTATRIBUNE F

COLOMITOS
LAS ÁNIMAS
Many in the know, hike to this beach, which is moderate 45 minute hike.
Because of its shallow waters, Playa las Animas is ideal for children and often fills up with families on weekends and holidays. Seafood restaurants line the sand.
QUIMIXTO Charming tiny town with just a couple restaurants and a beautiful waterfall hike. Rent horses and make a day of it.

BOCA DE TOMATLÁN Mostly a boat launch, there is a small beach/tributary. This is where you hire water taxis to the beaches further south. Beaches south of Boca de Tomatlan are only accessible by boat or hiking, depending on your fitness level.
PLAYA MISMALOYA
Where the movie, The Night of the Iguana was filmed. Located in front of the excellent dive and snorkel spot of Los Arcos you can book snorkeling and jet skis off the beach. A couple beach restaurants and vendors will keep you content throughout the day. FB.COM/VTATRIBUNE F
LAS CALETAS Former home of John Huston, this beach is the home of the Rhythms of the Night as well as a popular spot for weddings and a stopping point on many Vallarta Adventure tours.
MAJAHUITAS Often touted as the best snorkeling and dive spot in the bay. The waters here are clear and there is plenty of fish and sea turtles to spy on. This is where the Pirateship day tour stops.
YELAPA This once tiny hippy haven has boomed in recent years and now sports both electricity and cell phone towers, but remains only accessible by boat. Still a treat for a day or a week, the beach is lovely. The town is charming and there are two relatively accessible waterfalls. If you’re a nature enthusiast, the flora and fauna around Yelapa are amazing. FB.COM/VTATRIBUNE F

BEST BEACH FOR FRESH SEAFOOD AND MARGARITAS PLAYA LAS ANIMAS
BEST BEACH FOR A ROMANTIC WALK PLAYA DESTILADERAS Our choice for “Most Romantic Beach is Playa Destiladeras, located about 45 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta at km 9 along the highway to Punta de Mita. This long, flat, white sand beach is perfect for strolling hand in hand with your loved one as you watch the sun set behind Las Marietas Islands. To walk from one end of the beach and back takes about 50 minutes but we like to stop at the stylish beach club of Los Veneros for a midway cocktail to enjoy the full experience.
Just before Playa Majahuitas on the south shore lies our choice for the best beach to go to for the freshest seafood and coldest margaritas in the bay, Playa Las Animas. This golden sand beach is lined with five or six beachfront, thatched roofed restaurants to choose from. We recommend ordering the local specialty of Huachinango Zarandeado, which is whole red snapper rubbed with spices and cooked over a wood grill. Delicious! To get to Playa Las Animas, you can take the same water taxi from Boca de Tomatlan. Or for the more adventurous, you can hike along a well-marked path from Boca to Las Animas. It takes approx. two hours and is of moderate difficulty.
BEST BEACH FOR BOOGIE BOARDING PLAYA PUNTA DE MITA Most visitors to Punta de Mita head to local favorite Playa El Anclote, which is located in front of the main street and lined with seafood restaurants. However, our favorite is the lesser known Playa Punta de Mita that is located south of the small marina and is the perfect spot for playing in the gentle waves. Take the stairs across from Hotel La Quinta del Sol and spend the day enjoying the surf rolling in along this lovely white beach.
