ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Soni Irawan was born on 15 January 1975 in Yogyakarta. He studied in the Visual Art Faculty, Fine Arts Department, majoring in Printmaking in the Indonesian Art Institute situated in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A musician and one of the founders of a Jogjakarta experimental band Seek Six Sick, Soni’s art is greatly influenced by the spirit and energy of rock music. His choices of artistic techniques and medium are in line with his musical practice. Like jamming sessions, his canvases are filled with spontaneous strokes, sketchy figures and cut out pieces. He chooses oil bars to draw his lines since the medium gives him the similar feel of roughness and boldness as the sound created by a guitar - the instrument he plays in the band. His subject matters, however, are largely personal that revolve around his family and his environment with the underlying interest in capturing the spirit of human survival in everyday life.

ANTI/TRANSMEDIATATION : FROM ANALOGUE TO DIGITAL AND BACK

Soni’s methods for making paintings belie his printmaking background, primarily in the medium of woodcut. In this process, the linear elements are carved into the obdurate surface to create a negative mirror image. Once the plane has been cut into, it is inked so that the color or medium coats the entire surface and fills the carved wells. A paper is then pressed onto the engraved support to transfer the image from the wood to the paper. If desired this can be done multiple times on the same surface using different colors or states of the cuttings. Making woodcuts requires a certain type of thinking about how to build up the work up, an inherent understanding of its various states and layers as distinct and interacting entities. Welcome to Soni's world.
