Do YOU have the time? After much consideration, an interactive sundial was selected as the project by members of the Ford Institute Leadership Program— Forest Grove Cohort 2. The interactive sundial met all the criteria the leadership class wanted the project to fulfill including a place for people to convene, provide community participation and expression and would bring more art to Forest Grove. The bonus with this project is that it will also be educational. The sundial, being built at Thatcher Park, will be interactive in You can watch the construction progress on the sundial as you pass that a person will stand on the month of the the intersection of Thatcher Road and David Hill Road. year and (if it’s a sunny day) their shadow will fall on the correct time of day. 2014 Chalk Art Festival

By 4 pm on Saturday, September 20th, more than 450 chalk drawings adorned the sidewalks of downtown Forest Grove. People from all over the Portland Metro area came to Forest Grove to participate in drawing or just to gaze at the amazing art work taking place before their eyes. Great entertainment was provided by Kirk Larson, Don Patch, Conner Vietzke, and Big Mama Gayle and her Sugar Daddies. Joe Mishkin (Not Your Average Joe), provided balloon creations, flute playing and funny antics throughout the morning. Our greatly appreciated volunteers from Valley Art, Forest Grove High School, Pacific University, and the community helped to make this event possible. If you missed the fun this year, The Sidewalk Chalk Art Festival will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary Saturday, September 19th, 2015 next year so mark your calendars now! If you would like to volunteer to help please call Roylene Read at 503-357-0311.

Caught my eye... Two years ago a long-time volunteer, Jerry, had an idea to paint a mural on to the exterior wall of the Valley Art building. Over the last two years a small committee has been fundraising, researching and planning to bring this piece of art to the community. The committee researched other similar projects—one of them being the mural collection in Carlton. A plan was hatched! This summer you may have noticed the wall transforming into a beautiful piece of art. The mural artists, Emily Lux and Nate Marcel, assisted by some wonderful brush-wielding volunteers, brought Forest Grove and Valley Art together in a beautiful array of colors. Please stop by the gallery to see this masterpiece! —Dana Zurcher, Valley Art Board President
