Notice of Annual Meeting

Illuminating Life...

Yellow Plums by Linda J. Baker

2 September/October 2014

After spending years developing her painting style in the Midwest, she moved to Portland, Oregon. In the Pacific Northwest she has served as President of Painter’s Showcase of Portland, and is a member of Lake Area Artists. Her paintings hang in private collections and enjoys national recognition. As Linda puts it, “My art is an attempt to use my skill as a painter to capture and illuminate truths about the world around me. I want to communicate what I see when I stop looking at the world in a casual and remote way and instead see things intensely and immediately.” “When I paint, I try to create an emotional experience that comes from seeing some elusive or unrecognized beauty in an object or person or scene. Art for me is finding the beauty of everyday things. I love to paint from life, whether in the studio or plein air. This gives me an immediacy of experience— of form, light and color—that I can translate into paint on a canvas.” Linda is attracted to “representational forms of fine art” and she studies the Old Masters passionately. To her, the nature of oil painting is fascinating because the paint itself becomes an important part of how the artist communicates his or her vision. Linda finds expressing a threedimensional world on a two-dimensional canvas—with paint—provides a challenge and never ending source of occupation.

Manzanita Beach Grass by Susan Curington

Susan Curington is a third generation owner of her rural wooded land near the small town of Gaston. She attended Western Oregon University in Monmouth where she earned a Bachelor of Arts (with honors) and interdisciplinary studies in health, psychology and art. She has worked as a Licensed Massage Therapist and is now marketing director for North Woods LLC, finding reclaimed or sustainably harvested hardwoods for wood artisans and turners. At age 13, Susan juried in Portland’s Contemporary Crafts Gallery and has since studied with Roberta St. Louis and other well known watercolorists. Working in watercolor and acrylics, she has been featured in many shows in Oregon art galleries. Susan says, “I am in love with— smitten by—nature. I thrill when I see light dancing through a backlit leaf or flower petal, or the radiance of a butterfly wing. Color and luminosity in hundreds of vivid and subtle hues surprise me and valleyart.org

move me in the way music moves others. It goes beyond words and straight to my heart. Similarly, I love the surprises inherent in creating art, both in looking closely and carefully, and in applying paint to canvas.” At her home are particular trees she has known since childhood. She says that “living in the thick of nature daily and seeing the stars at night. I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything.” Through her paintings she hopes to express the profound gratitude she feels for the power and beauty of nature. A Corvallis artist, Ginny Gibson,

Forest Path by Susan Curington

has loved working with her hands, building with tools, drawing and painting since childhood. She took various art classes in high school and then received a master’s degree in teaching with an art minor. As an adult she has taken numerous art classes. When Ginny moved to

Valley Art Association

Corvallis four years ago she found wonderful ceramics teachers and began working with clay exclusively. She says, “I love the creative process that enables me to infuse my work with depth and meaning, be serious yet whimsical, and capture the best of the human spirit and womanhood.” “I make women because they bear hardships and carry burdens, they love unconditionally, they cheer when a friend gets an award, their hearts break when a friend dies, and they know that a hug and a kiss can soothe someone’s pain. The heart of a woman is what makes the world keep turning. They are joy, hope and love.” On her website, Ginny says it eloquently. “There is mystery involved in making things with clay. It’s as if my hands and heart connect with the Earth without interference. There’s surprise and joy, disappointment and wonder. I want my work to provoke and to share the mysteries of shaping a piece of the Earth into something that touches others. The creative process for me is accessing the hidden places within my soul that have no words.
