• A staff of 100 wardrobe fabricators began working on the costumes for the movie a year before the filming even started, in order to complete more than 100,000 costumes and 1,000 suits of armor. The costume making was an international project as leather workers hand-tooled items in the United Kingdom, while Italian shoemakers worked on boots and sandals. Silk was imported from Thailand, with West Germany contributing the armor. Woolens were manufactured and costumes embroidered in the United Kingdom, and lace came from France. DEAR MARY: My mother passed away in April, and she had a credit card balance of $3,500. I paid her bills while she was in a nursing home and had no income. As her son, am I now responsible for this credit card debt because she has passed away? -- Frank G.

* An armadillo’s shell is so hard that it can deflect a bullet, as a Texas man discovered to his chagrin when he took aim at one. The bullet ricocheted into his jaw and he had to be airlifted to a hospital, while the armadillo strolled away unscathed. * “Pants” was considered a dirty word in Victorian England. * Two conductors have died while conducting the second act of Wagner’s opera “Tristan und Isolde.” They collapsed from heart attacks at exactly the same point in the music due to its technical demands! * Had Georgie Fletcher of Australia never signed on to play the mobile game “Words With Friends,” her husband, Simon, might be dead. Georgie struck up a friendship via the game’s chat feature with frequent opponent Beth Legler from Missouri. One day, Georgie told Beth that Simon hadn’t been feeling well. Beth relayed his symptoms to her husband Larry, a doctor, who insisted that the Fletchers go to the hospital immediately. A 99% blockage was discovered near his heart, which, left untreated, would have certainly been fatal. * In 2015, Legoland became the first theme park to create its own currency. * Writer Guy de Maupassant frequently lunched in a restaurant at the base of the Eiffel Tower. Why? It was the only place he could go where he didn’t have to look at it. * Our senses of taste and smell are cut by 50% and 20%, respectively, during flights, which is why airplane food has never tasted so great. (“That’s what I’ve been telling you!” said every airplane food chef, ever). *** Thought for the Day: “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” -- Oliver Wendell Holmes (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc. I offered to pay for Hunt any additional floral costs by Mary as my wedding gift to the couple. Unfortunately, I underestimated the additional cost for the flowers, and it looks as if I will be going way over my budget for this gift. Dear Frank: No, you are not, unless you are named on the account as a joint owner. If your mother was the only person on the account, the credit card company, upon notification of her death, will look to her estate for full payment. Even if your drug plan was satisfactory for your needs this year, you will want to review the 2021 medication costs, and new deductibles that will be starting January 1st. REMEMBER---December 7th is the LAST DAY to make any changes to your plan. I have the knowledge, and tools to compare many eligible plans for your zip code to find which plan, and pharmacy might give you the best prices for 2021. All drug plans have what they call “preferred, standard, and not-in-network” pharmacies. These distinctions will usually make a big difference in how much your medication(s) will cost. From a reader: “I was taught as a toddler: When around a new dog, hold still and present your hand palm up for the dog to sniff. Recently, I had a vet tech breeze up to my dog, Ruby, and lower her hand down over Ruby’s head. Ruby jumped up and “air bit” at the vet tech’s hand. “Also, when I walk Ruby, people encourage their kids to come up and pet her whether or not I say it’s OK, including toddlers who want to grab her to steady themselves. I was taught to ask permission to approach someone’s dog. It’s the sensible thing to do. What is wrong with people?” My advice: Don’t reach out to pet a strange dog, even with the owner’s permission. Dog owners do not always provide the most accurate assessment of their dog’s temperament. This is sometimes a byproduct of denial, but by and large, it’s ignorance. A dog owner who does not grasp the importance of socialization won’t understand that Fido’s good manners and sweet disposition at home aren’t guaranteed to hold true out on the streets with the rest of us. When a stranger asks for permission to pet Fido, his owner might give the go-ahead -- not realizing Fido’s inner Cujo hasn’t been tamed when it comes to strangers. And the strangest of the strangers to a pooch? Children. Children are awkward. They walk funny, fall over, flail their arms, shriek, clap, and their heads wobble all over the place. To a dog that hasn’t been raised around children, any of this may feel threatening. I have four fantastic dogs at home. One of them has never been around children, and one of them gets nervous around quick, jerky movements. When my small nephew visits, I keep those dogs away from him. This is not about aggression; it’s about fear. And it’s the kind of “better safe than sorry” judgment call that responsible dog owners should be equipped to make. If you must pet a strange dog, curl your dainty digits down like a knuckle sandwich. This Cody's Corner: Turn to Page 8

How to Recognize and Stop Elder Abuse in the COVID Era DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: Can you write a column on how to recognize elder abuse and what to do if you suspect it? -- Concerned Relative Dear Concerned: Elder abuse is a big problem in the United States that has escalated during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the National Council on Aging, as many as five million seniors are victims of abuse each year, but studies suggest this crime is significantly under-reported. Only 1-in-14 cases of elder abuse ever get reported to the authorities because victims are usually too afraid, too embarrassed, too helpless or too trusting to call for help.
Page 13
abuse cases and providing help and guidance. Call the Eldercare Locator at 800-677-1116 to get the agency contact number in your area, or visit NCEA.acl.gov/Resources/State.aspx.
It’s also important to know that while elder abuse does happen in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, the vast majority of incidents take place at home where the senior lives. And tragically, the abusers are most often their own family members (usually the victim’s adult child or spouse) or hired caregiver.
The agency will ask what you have observed, who was involved, and who they can contact to learn more. You don’t need to prove that abuse is occurring; that is up to the investigating professional.
How to Recognize Abuse So, how can you tell if an elderly relative or friend is being abused, and what can you do to help?

A change in general behavior is a universal warning sign that a problem exists. If you notice that your relative or friend has become very depressed, withdrawn or gets upset or agitated easily, you need to start asking questions. Here are some additional warning signs on the different types of elder abuse that can help you spot a possible problem:
If, however, you feel the person is in immediate danger, call 911 or the local police for immediate help. It is extremely important to be observant in all matters of your loved one's care, and to be alert to any mistreatment you suspect may exist. The sooner abuse is detected the sooner it can be corrected.
• Physical or sexual abuse: Suspicious bruises or other injuries that can’t be explained. Sudden changes in behavior (appears troubled, nervousness, withdrawn, fearful), bent or broken eyeglasses, refusal to allow visitors to see an elder alone without the caregiver also present.

small porcelain vase that I have. I bought it at an antiques shop at least 40 years ago. It is decorated with a mountain scene of a home along a stream. It stands about five inches tall. It is a cylinder shape and has small handles to the top. Does it have any value?
by Anne McCollam
A: The mark you provided was used by the Morimura Brothers. They had offices and showrooms in New York City and imported porcelain from Japan.”Nippon” is the Japanese word for “Japan.”
Nineteenth-Century DIY Child’s Chair Q: This is a photo of an antique child’s chair. It stands about 18 inches tall, and the seat is 11 inches by 11 inches. I think the thick seat is oak. The frame and spindles are some type of hard wood. I was told that the frame, legs and spindles were sold by traveling salesmen in rural areas. All the buyer had to do was provide the wood plank for the seat and then glue it all together. We think it has sur vived in our family since the late 1800s. The chair is in excellent condition. Anything you can tell me about our chair will be appreciated.
Nippon vase was made in Japan
In 1890, the McKinley Tariff Act was passed. It raised taxes on goods from foreign countries and required all objects exported to the United States to bear the mark of the country of origin. William McKinley was the chair of the Ways and Means Committee and led the push to pass the act. He later became president of the United States. In Japan in the late 1800s, brothers Ichizaemon and Toyo Morimura established their exporting business, Morimura Gumi, in Japan. They began exporting fine china marked “Nippon.” The Morimura had showrooms in both New York and London. The name was later changed to Noritake, and they continue to be in business. Your Nippon vase was made between 1891 and 1921. It might be worth $50 to $75.

Child’s smoker’s bow chair is circa 1900.
A: The design of your smoker’s bow child’s chair is rooted in the Windsor chairs made in the early 1800s. The curved back, also known as a smoker’s bow, was supported by spindles. It was made by softening the wood with hot steam to create the bow. In the full-sized chairs, the back was called the smoker’s bow because the curved arms were the right size to support a person’s arm when smoking a pipe. The legs, stretchers and spindles were turned by the maker. A variety of woods was used, including beech, elm, ash, walnut and maple. Your circa-1900s chair would probably be worth $275 to $375.

* On Oct. 26, 1984, at Loma Linda University Medical Center in California, Dr. Leonard Bailey performs the first baboon-to-human heart transplant, replacing a 14-day-old infant girl’s defective heart. “Baby Fae” survived the operation, but died of heart failure after 20 days. * On Oct. 27, 1659, William Robinson and Marmaduke Stevenson, two Quakers who came from England in 1656 to escape religious persecution, are executed in the Massachusetts Bay Colony for their religious beliefs. The colony had banned Quakers under penalty of death. * On Oct. 28, 1886, President Grover Cleveland dedicates The Statue of Liberty, a gift of friendship from the people of France, in New York Harbor. Originally known as “Liberty Enlightening the World,” the statue was to commemorate the Franco-American alliance during the American Revolution. * On Oct. 29, 1971, Duane Allman, leader of the Allman Brothers Band, is killed when he loses control of his motorcycle and hits a flatbed truck in Macon, Georgia. He was 24. One year later, the band’s bassist Berry Oakley died in a very similar motorcycle accident just a few blocks away. * On Oct. 30, 1890, Oakland, California, enacts a law against opium, morphine and cocaine. It allowed only doctors to prescribe these drugs, which had been legal for cures or pain relief. * On Oct. 31, 1957, Toyota hopes to saturate the American market with its inexpensive Toyopet Crown sedans. It was a flop: The car could barely meet California’s roadworthiness standards, guzzled extraordinary amounts of gas and oil, and tended to shake violently, overheat and stall. * On Nov. 1, 1765, despite widespread opposition in the American colonies, Parliament enacts the Stamp Act, designed to raise revenue for British military in America. The Stamp Act was designed to force colonists to use special stamped paper in the printing of newspapers, pamphlets, almanacs and playing cards. (c) 2020 Hearst Communications, Inc. Deadly Headly
There are several movements in the very beginning of the golf swing that can be quite detrimental to the success of the rest of the swing. One of these deadly moves is when the head moves toward the target as a result of poor body movement or weight shift. As a matter of fact, no great player in the history of golf has ever moved their head toward the target in the takeaway. The takeaway should be a culmination of club, arm, shoulder, and body movements away from the target. The head does not have to move more than a few inches, but it should never go against the grain of the club and arm movement. To get a better awareness of your own takeaway, place something on the ground in front of you where it aligns with the shadow of your head (left ear preferred). Watch your shadow to see that you don’t move toward the target!
