Diabetics across the world can be grateful for the tremendous research of Sir Frederick Grant Banting and John James Rickard Macleod. Banting was a scientist, doctor, and painter who was the primary discoverer of insulin. Macleod worked alongside Banting and spent much of his career researching carbohydrate metabolism. Banting was just 32 years old when he was awarded the prize and received a lifetime annuity from the Canadian government to continue his research. King George V knighted Banting in 1934. In 2004, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation program The Greatest Canadian declared Banting as fourth onSENIOR their list of the greatest Canadians of all time. DISCOUNT

Nobel Prizes (from page one) holes for mining. In 1866, he received a patent for his invention, which he called
“dynamite.” This was closely followed by the invention of the blasting cap, a detonator used to set off the dynamite using a lighted fuse. His innovation was so successful that he set up 90 factories in more than 20 countries. • Although Nobel had several romantic relationships, he never married. He lived much of his life as a very wealthy recluse who was prone to depression. By the time he died at age 63, he held 355 patents.

They are awarded each year to those who, “during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind.” Some Nobel scholars suggest it was Nobel’s way to compensate for developing such destructive forces, since his inventions of dynamite and ballistite were used for violent purposes during his lifetime. • His relatives vehemently contested the will, and it took four years for the executors to cut through the red tape necessary to adhere to Alfred Nobel’s wishes.
59 years. The youngest recipient is Lawrence Bragg, who at age 25, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1915 jointly with his father “for their services in the analysis of crystal structure by means of X-rays.”

Dollars $and $en$e$ by David Uffington
By Samantha Weaver
● It was historian Barbara Tuchman who made the following sage observation: “War is the unfolding of miscalculations.” ● You might be surprised to learn that a polar bear’s skin is black and its fur is colorless. The transparent strands are so dense, though, that the fur takes on the color of the light around it. ● Unless you’re a literary scholar, you’ve probably never heard of the novel “Cup of Gold.” It was American author John Steinbeck’s first novel, and it was a flop. He was issued a $250 advance to write the book, and the sales didn’t even make that much money for the publishing house. Of course, early failure was no indication of talent; Steinbeck continued writing and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. ● Domestic diva Martha Stewart once dated actor Sir Anthony Hopkins. After seeing “The Silence of the Lambs,” though, Stewart broke it off. She just couldn’t get past the image of him as Hannibal Lecter. ● You might think of glaciers as lifeless places, but that’s not true. In addition to the polar creatures that live on and around these sheets of ice, there is one that actually lives in the ice. Though they’re only found in glaciers in certain areas of North America, the ice worm actually spends its entire life within the ice. In fact, the worms are so well-adjusted to the cold that when they are exposed to temperatures even slightly above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, they will liquefy. ● The banana and the telephone were introduced to North America at the same time, at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. *** Thought for the Day: “Progress always involves risk. You can’t steal second base and keep your foot on first.” -- Frederick Wilcox (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: Can you tell me if Army Wives will be back on Lifetime? I loved that show. -- Cheryl, Boise, Idaho
A:
“Army Wives” was not renewed after seven successful and record-breaking seasons on Lifetime. For all of us who need some sort of closure, Lifetime has come through with a two-hour special, “Army Wives: A Final Salute,” which premieres Sunday, March 16, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The retrospective provides a look back at the program with members of the cast and production team as they come together for a final, heartfelt goodbye to “Army Wives.” The special features interviews with original cast members, including Wendy Davis, Kim Delaney, Sally Pressman, Brigid Brannagh, Sterling K. Brown, Brian McNamara, Terry Serpico, Drew Fuller and Jeremy Davidson, who reunite to offer exclusive insight into Wendy Davis the show and their characters. ***
Q:
Can you tell me what happened to “Golden Boy”? I never saw a finale episode for
“Golden Boy” -- which aired on CBS for one season -- followed the meteoric rise of Walter Clark, an ambitious cop who became the youngest police commissioner in New York City’s history. The show starred Theo James, Chi McBride, Kevin Alejandro and Bonnie Somerville, and was very well received with glowing reviews from critics and audiences alike. However, the show fell victim to the old “mediocre ratings” syndrome, and was canceled after its freshman season. ***
Q: I was glad to read in your column
that “Game of Thrones” is returning to HBO on April 6. Does that mean season 3 will be out on DVD soon? -- Doug C., via email
A:
Season three of the adventure-fantasy series was released Feb. 18 on DVD. So now you can now catch up on what you’ve been missing, just in time for season four. But keep all spoilers, including “The Red Wedding,” close to the vest. *** READERS: I’ve discovered a wonderful new book series, and I want to share it with you. New author Em Barrett has written “Leaving Green Island” and “The Almosts,” which follow three 20-something girlfriends as they navigate the present day -- trying to find the right job, the right boyfriend and the right life. We also get a glimpse into the past to see how they got where they are today. I tell you, I couldn’t put these books down, and now, five of my readers won’t be able to either. I am giving away five sets of these books in e-book form (if you don’t have an ereader, you can still read them on your computer). Simply send an email to letters@cindyelavsky.com and tell me to enter you in the book giveaway contest, or send a letter to: Cindy Elavsky, King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475. Deadline is April 30, 2014.
Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com.

Everyday CHEAPSKATE
®
by Mary Hunt
Turning Off the Light Can Save a Bundle Just when I think I’ve heard every possible way to save time and money, I open my mail only to find new and clever ideas I’d never thought of. ® No doubt about it, I have the smartest readers in the world. (And good-looking, too!)
Everyday CHEAPSKATE by Mary Hunt
DIM SEARCH. I learned this tip by accident, and it has saved me a bundle. If your kids are constantly in and out of the refrigerator eating the food faster than you can replenish it, remove the light bulb. If they are really hungry, they will take the time to search, otherwise it won’t be worth the bother. -- Leslie M., Massachusetts SILVER CLEANER. To clean your silver without harsh commercial chemical products, use the miracle powder in your pantry: baking soda. I used it on my silver candleholders when I was in a pinch and it worked wonders. Make a thick paste of baking soda and water, and massage in gently with an old toothbrush. Rinse under warm water, or if the piece is too big, wipe off with a wet cloth and buff to a shine with a clean cotton towel. I will never go back to $10 cleaners now that I’ve found the 50cent solution. -- Angela H., California DRY ERASE BOARD. Instead of paying $20 for a small, white dry-erase marker board, we purchased an 8-foot sheet of white tub paneling. It works just the same as a white board and it’s HUGE! The best part: It cost only $15. We did not frame ours, but you could, of course. -- Debbie P., Mississippi
Tidbits of Coachella Valley
CHEAPER THAN STARBUCKS. One of our favorite haunts is a local college coffee shop. We can buy good coffee and lattes for about a third of the cost of other coffee shops. The food on many campuses is good and very reasonable, and you do not have to be alumni or a student to patronize. I have even found, at certain times of the year, that the bookstore has some great sales. -- Mary Beth D., Washington

Education Benefits: New Tool for Vets
TUITION SAVER. Most colleges and universities offer their full-time employees free tuition as part of their employment benefits package. But it can get even better. Many extend free or reduced tuition to the employees’ dependent children as well. This is working so well for my son and me. I work at an Ivy League school, so free tuition represents a tidy sum. The university I work for will even pay up to 40 percent of the cost of the tuition if my son attends another university. -- Paulette A., Pennsylvania
Whether you’re a veteran or a family member using GI Bill benefits or the DoD Military Tuition Assistance Program, if things go wrong, it’s hard to know where to turn. The Department of Veterans Affairs has launched a new complaint system online, in partnership with the Departments of Defense, Education and Justice, as well as the Federal Trade Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau -- big guns all of them. For the past few months, “Maggie,” our 2-anda-half-year-old Shar Pei-Boxer mix, has been getting really aggressive toward my boyfriend, his mom, his 2-year-old nephew and me. Lately, she’s been growling at our nephew when he tries to hug her and at our smaller puppy when he’s merely playing with a toy. Last night, she jumped on the bed and woke me. When I sat up, she started snarling at me. I took her downstairs to the cage, and she was fine until it came time to actually go into the cage. At that point, she snapped at the smaller dog and then turned toward me and snarled. Initially, I yelled at her, but then I tried to calm her down by saying in a soothing voice, “Maggie, it’s OK. Maggie, calm down.” I reached in slowly to pet her, and she bit me and drew blood for the third or fourth time now. Until today, I blamed her for acting that way. But I realize now that it is our fault. The “punishment aggression” description covers basically everything we have done to discipline her. I never knew that my behavior could affect a dog so much. I grew up seeing my parents discipline our dogs that way. Now I have no idea what I can do for her since her aggression is probably our fault. Do you have any advice? I really, really want to try to fix the situation. But I just can’t keep her around if she is going to snap at our nephew. There’s a lot to learn from a letter like this. The letter writer demonstrates the importance of leading by example. She learned from her parents the only methods they knew of disciplining a dog -- outdated, uninformed punishing tactics that involve yelling, bullying and possibly worse. Minute by minute, her nephew was learning the same. Her story illustrates the value of personality testing and training. Getting a feel for a dog’s personality before making him your dog empowers you to select the best fit for you, your family and your lifestyle -- and enables you to judge his ability to relate to children, if necessary. Your dog’s personality also determines the necessary method of training and discipline. You don’t train or discipline a shy dog the same way you would a dominant dog. Everything is different, right down to the tone of your voice. Many dog owners in similar situations never own up to their role. Instead, they deny a problem exists or dance around it with a litany of excuses. CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 12

Nannies, Maids, Babysitters and Social Security Q:
We are going to hire a nanny to help care for our two small children. We have heard different opinions about whether we will have to deduct Social Security taxes from the wages we will be paying this person. Can you please clarify this?
A:
I’m a retired Social Security guy. We know all about the output side of the program (Social Security benefits), but not much about input side of the ledger (Social Security taxes). This is actually a question for the Internal Revenue Service. IRS is responsible for all tax matters, including the payment of Social Security taxes. But I know enough about the issue to get you thinking in the right direction. Whether or not you have to deduct Social Security taxes from your nanny’s pay depends on several circumstances. Some nannies are self-employed. In other words, they run a business that supplies nanny services. If that is your case, then it is probably the nanny’s responsibility to pay selfemployment Social Security taxes out of the money you give her. But if you have simply hired a woman to serve as your nanny, then you may have some tax obligations. If you will pay her at least $1,900 in 2014, then you must deduct Social Security AND Medicare taxes from her pay. And you must report those tax payments to the federal government. To learn how to do that, you should read an IRS publication called “Household Employers Tax Guide.” You can find it at their website. Here is a link: www.irs.gov/publications/p926/index.html. * * *
