Black History Month (from page one) on molding his views on freedom and human rights. • Douglass secretly began teaching other slaves to read, a practice that went unnoticed for some months. When it was discovered, he was sent to a farmer who was well-known as a mean-spirited “slave-breaker.” After repeated beatings and punishing discipline, Douglass’ spirit was nearly broken, and he began to plot his escape. After one failed attempt, he was finally successful at age 18 by boarding a train posing as a free black sailor. • Less than 24 hours later, Douglass was sheltered in the safe house of a New York abolitionist. Eleven days later he married a free black woman who had helped him escape, a union that would endure for 44 years. He spent the remainder of his life speaking out on racism, editing a black newspaper, writing three autobiographies, and gaining fame worldwide as an inspirational speaker. • On Independence Day, 1881, the doors of “Tuskegee Normal School for Colored Teachers” opened with a young principal named Booker T. Washington in charge. At 25 years of age, this ambitious young leader began classes in a run-down old church building. The institute was founded by former slave Lewis Adams and George W. Campbell, an Alabama banker and former slaveholder, who were both

Dogs can’t converse with us, but they speak canine just fine. They talk, howl, whine and chat. They yip and yap. Much of it sounds like nonsense to us, but some of it transcends the communication gap. If your dog looks at you and whines, or whines while pacing in front of a door, you’d be smart to let him out. If he barks while play-bowing in front of a ball, you’d be kind to accept his invitation to a game of fetch. If he employs his deepest bark prefaced by a throaty growl, you’d be wise to flip on the exterior lights and have a look around. Some dogs sing at the sound of sirens. By the dog’s perception, the siren is the song of another dog, a member of the universal pack, and his mournful response is both a matter of politeness and of unity. I’m here. You’re not alone. We’re in this together, pal. Dogs bark out of excitement, concern, territorialism, fear, alertness, loneliness, boredom, playfulness and even pain. You probably love the sound of your dog’s voice. I know I do. Within reason. Excessive noise from a dog is annoying. It’s grating. And left unchecked, it can be enraging. More and more people are working from home. More and more homes are being crammed into neighborhoods. Yards are getting smaller. Neighbors are getting closer. Is it just me, or is it hard to breathe in here? If your beloved dog makes so much noise that it’s irritating to you, it’s at least 10 times more irritating to everyone around you. Don’t let excessive noise go unchecked. Figure out the trigger and make a plan. For example, if your dog barks at that squirrel in your tree every morning, you have two choices: train the squirrel to exit the tree on command, or train the dog to be quiet. My money’s on the dog. Teaching your dog to simmer down requires precision timing, loads of praise and possibly some high-value rewards: a favorite toy, cheese or meaty delights. I don’t typically train with food, but you aren’t a professional trainer and a squirrel is tough competition for your dog’s attention. Next time your dog is barking, say in a calm, firm voice: “Quiet.” Once. Probiotics: Good Germs Come to the Rescue DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 69-yearold woman, writing to you for information on probiotics. After taking antibiotics for a sinus infection, I developed diarrhea and bloating. I had many tests and scans. Ever ything was OK. My symptoms continued. On my third visit, they took a stool specimen, which showed yeasts. The doctor suggested I go to a healthfood store and buy probiotics. I did, and a miracle happened: My diarrhea stopped. Is yogurt considered probiotics? For how long and how often should you take probiotics? -- N.A. ANSWER: Probiotics contain live microorganisms that promote health when eaten. Microorganisms are bacteria and fungi. The thought of swigging down bacteria or fungi might be a turnoff. However, these microorganisms are the good kind, not the kind that causes infections. They work for us. Probiotics can restore to the digestive tract the normal balance between good and bad germs. They also appear to have a stimulatory effect on the immune system. Probiotics come as tablets, cheeses, milk,

yogurts, juices and other drinks. The labels on these products must say “live and active cultures.” The names of the organisms most often used are lactobacillus, bifidobacterium and sacchromyces. Some brand names of probiotics are Culturelle, Align, Floraster and the yogurt Activia. Curbing diarrhea is only one use for these products. They’re also used for irritable bowel syndrome and other conditions. Yogurt is a probiotic if it contains live cultures. How long can you take them? That’s a question that can’t be answered. The studies haven’t been done. The side effects from probiotics are few. It seems to me that you can use the yogurt probiotics forever. The others are probably equally safe for long-term use, but definite statements aren’t possible. The labels on the products ought to tell you how long they can be used and in what doses to use them. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I would like to comment on your article on bed-wetting. I am 68 and was a bed-wetter when I was little. It was during an era when children were supposed to be potty trained at young ages. I remember the rituals my parents went through to break me of this habit that, I suppose, was embarrassing to them. I eventually outgrew it. My first-born daughter also was a bedwetter. I resolved not to make a big deal of it. Ever y morning we removed the sheets and pjs, and washed her ... never harping about her “problem.” She outgrew it. Two of her five children were bed-wetters, too. She never dwelt on it. Perhaps bed-wetting has a genetic basis. Parents ought not to grumble and blame their children. Brain Training Really Does Work

Research on seniors who underwent brain training shows that the effects were still there 10 years later. The 3,000 seniors, with an average age of 74, only had to participate in a dozen or so training sessions lasting about an hour each to get years of gain. The study, done by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, was called the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly study, or ACTIVE. Participants were divided into four groups: three receiving training in memory (word lists), processing speed (identifying objects) or reasoning (looking for number patterns), plus a group who didn’t get any training. They were tested at intervals of one, two, three, five and 10 years. More than half got additional training to increase the effects. The results: Memory gains seemed to drop off after five years, but processing speed and gains in reasoning ability still were evident 10 years later. Compared to those who didn’t get the training, participants were more able to handle daily activities such as cooking, money and medications. More than 73 percent of those who’d had reasoning training still scored above their pre-training levels. In processing speed, some 70 percent scored at or above their pre-training levels. When it came to memory, however, the trained group and the control group scored equally.
