• The word “dolphin” comes from the Greek “Delphis,” which translates to “womb,” leading to an interpretation of the meaning as “a fish with a womb.” Yet they aren’t fish at all, but mammals who breathe air, give birth to live young and nurse them with milk. Dolphins are warm-blooded, maintaining a constant body temperature. They do have hair, but only when they are first born. It falls out within two weeks, and doesn’t grow again for the remainder of their lives.

• Dolphins are exceptionally intelligent animals, second only to human beings. MRI scans show they have a large brain with an intricate neocortex, giving them the ability to reason and experience emotions. They are highly trainable, and actually pass their learned knowledge on to fellow dolphins. They exhibit concern for other animals by helping the injured, and in many documented cases they have saved the lives of humans by nudging them along with their noses or towing them safely to shore. • Living in the wild, a male dolphin will have a lifespan of 40 to 45 years, while a female can live to age 50. • The orca killer whale is actually a member of the dolphin family, the largest member of Delphinidae category. 

Now I am not sure I made the right choice. Please tell me which one you feel is better. I am in my early 60s. -- Aline

Number 6: Buy enough term coverage to fulfill your needs. Life insurance is no place to skimp, especially with rates at historic lows. A good rule of thumb is a policy that’s 8 to 10 times the gross annual income of the primary breadwinner in the family, and 5 to 8 times the secondary earner’s gross income.

Myth Number 4: If you are due two benefits, you get them both. Anyone who is married or has ever been married is potentially due two Social Security benefits. But as a general rule, if you are due two Social Security benefits, you don’t get them both. You get only the one that pays the higher rate. There is a twist to this rule however. It can best be explained with an example. (And to keep my math simple, I’ll just assume everyone waited until age 66 to file for Social Security.) Husband Hal is getting $2,000 in retirement benefits. Wife Wilma didn’t work very much outside the home. So she just gets a small $600 Social Security check. But as Hal’s wife, she is due $1,000 in spousal benefits. She doesn’t get a $600 retirement check AND a $1,000 spousal benefit. She gets the higher benefit, or $1,000. But there is a rule that says if Wilma is due anything on her own record, she must be paid it. So Wilma will get $600 on her record and another $400 off of Hal’s account to take her up to the $1,000 level. In other words, at least on paper, Wilma is getting benefits from two Social Security accounts. But in reality, she is just getting one check for $1,000. Please review carefully. Myth Number 1: You must do something with your Social Security by April 30. The April 30 Social Security filing deadline that everyone has heard or read about, and, if my emails are any indication, that everyone is panicking about, is meaningless to most people. It only impacts a very small percentage of potential Social Security beneficiaries. But you wouldn’t know that if you listen to commercials on TV and radio, or get flyers in the mail from financial planners with messages like this: “If you don’t act by April 30, you could be missing out on tens of thousands of dollars in Social Security benefits.” I am going to devote an entire column next week to this topic. But for now I will just say this: Only people who are already 66, or will be 66 by April 30, and who want to delay taking benefits until later (usually age 70), AND who want to employ the “file and suspend” strategy discussed ad infinitum in this column, will have to sign up for benefits, and then suspend those benefits, by April 30. Again, I will explain this in detail in next week’s column. But for now I just want to send this message: For the 99 percent of people reading this column that this does not apply to, you don’t have to do anything with respect to Social Security by April 30.

Booster Shots Recommended for Seniors Dear Savvy Senior: I just turned 65 and would like to find out what types of vaccinations are recommended to Medicare beneficiaries, and how they are covered. -- Health Conscious Dear Health Conscious: Most people think that vaccinations are just for kids, but adults, especially seniors who tend to have weaker immune systems, need their shots too. Here’s a rundown of what vaccines the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend for seniors 65 and older, and how they’re covered by Medicare: Flu (Influenza): While you probably already know that flu shots are recommended every fall to all seniors, you may not know that those over 65 also have the option of getting a high-dose flu vaccine instead of a regular flu shot. This vaccine – known as the Fluzone HighDose – has four times the amount of antigen as a regular flu shot does, which creates a stronger immune response for better protection. Egg Cup is Excellent Buy

Enclosed is a photo of an egg cup with an under plate. I am an egg cup collector and recently found this one at my local Goodwill store. I paid 50 cents for it and I’m hoping it’s a real Henriot Quimper faience piece. Marked on the back of the plate are the words “HR -- Quimper.” I know there are fakes, so I would like to know if there is any definitive way to discern if this is the real thing? If so, could you tell me the approximate value?

Jules Henriot’s Quimper Pottery was founded in 1904.

The mark you described is authentic. It was used by Jules Henriot for Quimper Pottery from around 1904 to 1926. Quimper Pottery fakes can be recognized by inferior design quality and are often made in countries other than France. Quimper pieces are made of tin-glazed earthenware or enamel, and are named for the town Quimper, located in Brittany, France. Abundant quantities of red clay were available in the riverbed that runs through Quimper. Beginning in the 1860s, Quimper pieces were decorated with male and female figures of Breton peasants. The under plate appears to be biniou-shaped. “Biniou” is French for bagpipe. Look at it closely and you can see the shape of a bagpipe. The mark “HR” was changed

Rosalene pieces include compote, candy dishes, animal figures, fairy lamps, bowls and ewers. Fenton filed for Chapter 11 in 2008, reopened in 2009 and made a limited production of pieces for gift shops. Eventually, the company became Fenton International and is now manufactured in China.
