FELINE ETYMOLOGY
• Attab was a Moslem general and contemporary of Mohammed who had the distinction of having a city named after him: Attabieh. Attabieh became a sector in Bagdad famous for its richly colored striped silk cloth, also called attabieh. The word was passed into other languages as ‘attabi’ and entered into English as ‘tabby.’ Those cats with striped coats similar to striped silk became known generically as ‘tabby’ cats. • A male cat is called a tom cat because of a popular story published in 1760 called “The Life and Adventures of a Cat.” The hero of the story was named Tom. • The word for cat in the ancient Egyptian language was ‘miu’ and in Chinese it’s ‘mao.’ In Arabic it’s ‘qittah’ which is very similar to the English ‘kitty.’ In German it’s ‘kata’; in French ‘chat’; in Polish ‘kot’; and in Spanish ‘gato.’ KINDS OF CATS

• Although dogs have a better sense of smell and hearing than humans, their sense of taste is awful. They only have 1,700 taste buds whereas humans have 9,000. Cats come in last with only 473. This helps explain why dogs so willingly eat garbage: ‘smells interesting, can’t taste it.’ • The myth that dogs see only in black and white has been disproved. They can see some colors such as blue and yellow but tend to have the same sort of red-green colorblindness that some humans have. Dogs have better night vision than humans.

Cats (from page one) spring survive, can produce 65,536 kittens in just five years. • There are 41 breeds of pedigree cats recognized by the Cat Fanciers’ Association. While breeds of the domestic dog differ greatly in size, form, and shape, there is no equivalent of the Great Dane or dachshund in the domestic cat family. The smallest full grown cat weighs about three pounds, and the largest average about 18 pounds -- a difference factor of about six. A St. Bernard, however, can weigh 300 times more than a Yorkshire terrier. • One study showed that neutered cats live an average of three years longer than unneutered ones. Crossbred cats tend to live longer than purebred cats. • The manx, a tailless cat, is not a true breed. The special characteristics of a true breed must hold true through many generations of breeding. Manx cats, when bred, almost always produce at least one kitten with a tail. Furthermore, a tailless kitten may show up occasionally in a litter of any breed of cat. FELINE FACTS

Everyday CHEAPSKATE
®
by Mary Hunt
By Samantha Weaver
Two Options When Your Social Security Number is Compromised DEAR MARY: About a month ago, my Everyday wallet was stolen out of my handbag while in the supermarket. I filed a police report, but CHEAPSKATE they advised me it’s not likely I will ever get it
* It was 20th-century American historian, sociologist, philosopher and literary critic Lewis Mumford who made the following sage observation: “A man of courage never needs weapons, but he may need bail.” * In the 1960s, American spies in the Soviet Union had a novel way to eavesdrop on conversations: They used cats. The CIA agents placed listening devices on the felines in order to hear conversations that might take place on a park bench or near an open window.
®
by Mary Hunt I reported this to my back -- or the contents. bank and credit-card company. Those accounts were closed and reopened with new account numbers. But I am sick with worry because my Social Security card was in the wallet. I don’t know what to do. What can I do? I so appreciate any guidance that will help give me some peace of mind. I’ve learned my lesson to never carry that with me. Just wish I’d been smarter sooner. -- Marissa
* Polar bears and grizzly bears are similar enough genetically to successfully mate. Any offspring produced from such a union is known as a “pizzly.” * If you’re a book lover who is fortunate enough to be planning a trip to Japan’s capital sometime soon, then Book and Bed Tokyo needs to be on your agenda. For a mere $30-$40 per night, you can sleep in a bunk surrounded by bookshelves and have access to free Wi-Fi and a vending machine. The bathrooms and a large seating area (furnished, reportedly, with deep, comfy couches) will be shared with other guests -- but that’s just an opportunity to meet likeminded literary travelers! You can bring your own reading material, of course, but with 1,700 titles provided in both English in Japanese, there’s no need.
get to see it in action, almost daily. Faithful readers may recall from a past column that one of my staff members, Max, has been contending with identity theft since he was a teenager. His SSN was stolen, and over the past decade, hundreds of people have attempted to use his name and SSN to apply for jobs, file for tax refunds, sign up for health insurance, apply for passports and get credit. Max’s problems have not ended, and they will not end anytime soon. But Max no longer worries about it. Lifelock moves into action the moment his SSN is ever used in any kind of application. In one week during the holidays, Max received three alerts from Lifelock, with information on three people trying to open credit card accounts using his SSN. Lifelock put a stop to them immediately before those thugs could even complete the first step. And that’s in just one week. OPTION TWO. You can take all the steps yourself that are necessary to manage your SSN. If you choose this option, there are several steps you’ll need to take right away. Contact one of the three major creditreporting agencies Equifax (888-766-0008), TransUnion (800-916-8800), or Experian (888-3973742) to place a fraud alert on your credit file. That agency will contact the other two. Renew the fraud alert every 90 days until you’re satisfied the matter has been settled. It could take years. Contact the Social Security Administration only to get a replacement card. Tell each of the three agencies that your SSN has been stolen. They’ll give you free copies of your current credit reports. Review those reports for unfamiliar accounts and unknown inquiries from companies. Report the theft of the SSN to the IRS by calling 800-908-4490. That will prevent tax-fraud thieves from filing tax returns in your name and collecting your tax refund. File an identity-theft report with your local police. The police report will be necessary to help clear your records and your name in the future. Keep track of, record, report and close all fraudulent accounts by contacting both the companies holding the accounts and the credit-reporting agencies. This will keep your credit as clean as possible going forward. If several years pass after the theft of your SSN, and the problems arising from the theft continue, you may want to apply for a new SSN. But before you do, there are several things to consider: It’s not easy. In fact it is nearly impossible, that’s how rare it is. Even by some miracle it does, your old SSN will never go away completely. The Administration never invalidates an SSN once it’s been used. I wish you well, Marissa. Whichever way you choose to go with this, time is of the essence. You have no time to waste. Take care of this today, without fail.
DEAR MARISSA: I am so sorry to hear about this. But worry is the wrong response because that is totally unproductive. Worry doesn’t fix anything. Before I give you the advice that will restore your peace of mind, I think it’s important that all of us understand that our Social Security numbers are much different than say a credit card or debit card. A Social Security number is the single most important piece of government-issued identification an American citizen can have. It is the most valuable piece of identification that cybercriminals can get their hands on. A valid SSN can be sold to undocumented workers or to people trying to hide their true identities. A stolen SSN allows the thief or his or her customers to do almost everything that you or I can * It’s common knowledge that the osdo with our legitimate SSNs. Baby-Proof Your Pup Authorities may never know what provoked Labrador puppy in Tulsa, Okla., to fatally maul 2-month-old Zane Alen Earles. According to The Oklahoman, the child’s grandfather placed him in an infant swing in the dining room before he and the baby’s father left the house Monday morning a little after 8 a.m. The boy’s mother and grandmother were asleep in their bedrooms at the time. A couple of hours later, Earles’ mother found her son dead in his swing. Tragic. And utterly preventable. Reportedly, there were two dogs in the household: the Lab and a pug. Both were taken to the Tulsa Animal Shelter, where the Lab pup was euthanized. Does this mean the Labrador retriever --America’s favorite dog for decades running -- will now plummet in popularity, as did the Rottweiler, as did the American Staffordshire terrier, as did the Doberman with each new attack? Does it mean we had this gentle breed pegged wrong all along? Absolutely not. It means breed is largely irrelevant. It means we as dog owners must be aware of the dangers of mingling infants or small children with dogs. It means we as parents must be vigilant in ensuring our kids are safe around the family pet. A 2-month-old child left alone with a dog -- any dog -- doesn’t have a chance if that dog suddenly feels threatened and decides to act on it. Babies are particularly vulnerable: They are physically fragile. They lack the strength and coordination to defend themselves or get away. They wail, they flail, they kick and scream -- all of which can be irritating to the canine sensibilities. And when baby starts to crawl, the dog simply sees one of its own down on the ground on all fours. A little confused roughhousing is all it takes for a small child to be seriously wounded -- even by a small dog. CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10

Editor's Note: The Tom Margenau Social Securitiy column was not available this week at presstime, and a recent column will run in its place. His regularly scheduled column will resume again next week. We apologize for any inconvenience. -- Ed.
Mailbag Miscellany This week, instead of concentrating on just one topic, I’m going to dig into my mailbag and answer random questions. I will try to keep my answers short and sweet so I can squeeze in as many questions as my column space will permit.
Q:
I took widow’s benefits at 60, intending to switch to my own at 70. When I was about to turn 70, I called Social Security to make the switch. The man on the phone talked me into taking 6 months retroactive benefits. So I didn’t get my full age-70 rate. That was about a year ago and I’ve been losing sleep about it ever since. Did I make a huge mistake?
A:
Stop worrying and get a good night’s rest. You did what you did and that’s that. And in my opinion, you didn’t make a mistake. Had you started your benefits at 70, you would have received an ongoing monthly benefit equal to 132 percent of your full retirement-age rate. By taking benefits six months early, your ongoing rate will be 128 percent of your FRA benefit. So you lost four percent. But you gained the six months of retroactive benefits. I hope you took that money and had a good time with it!
Q:
I am 60 years old and have been getting disability benefits for about 5 years. When can I start getting some of my ex-husband’s Social Security? He is 66 years old and has been on Social Security for many years.

Final Changes DUE:
I am 69 years old. I get $1,348 per month from my own Social Security. I was married just one time. I was married Nov. 21, 1974 and divorced on Nov. 1, 1984. My exhusband married several more times after he divorced me. Is there any way I can get any extra Social Security from his record? I sure could use the money.
A:
I’m sorry, but you aren’t due any extra Social Security from your ex. The law is very specific. It says you must have been married at least 10 years to qualify for benefits as a divorced spouse. Or to be more precise, the law says your marriage must have reached its 10th anniversary. And if the dates you gave me are accurate, you came up just 20 days short of reaching that anniversary. And I’m afraid that means you also come up short in trying to get extra Social Security benefits.

Circa 1900 Piano Stool is Unusual
This mark is on the bottom of a vase that I have. It stands about 10 inches tall and is decorated with a bird against a gold background. There are four loop like handles about halfway down from the top. It is in mint condition. I know nothing about its origin, maker, age or value. Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Q:
I have been reading your column for many years and occasionally find an “I have one of those!” A couple of months ago, you made my day with your Q & A about a piano stool. I have a similar one and I have been looking for information about its histor y for a long time. Enclosed is a picture of mine. It was given to me by my m o t h e r - i n - l a w. I can’t find an identifying mark anywhere, so I have no idea of who made it. It is in ver y good condition. I think the back is unique and it also has glass ball and claw feet. Can you tell me more about my piano This unique Piano Stool was stool, and should made in the early 1900s. I just go with the $150 to $350 price range you gave to the one in an earlier column?

You have an example of art nouveau pottery. It was made by the Amphora Porzellan Fabrik in Turn-Teplitz, Austria. Hans and Carl Riessner, Rudolf Kessel and Edward Stellmacher founded their pottery factory in 1892. Your vase was made around 1900 and would probably be worth $300 to $400. * * * Address your questions to Anne Mc-

Bunker Blues All Rights Reserved
We’ve all had that experience of getting into a deep greenside bunker, only to spend two to three swings before finally expelling the ball onto the green. It usually starts with a poor lie, or sometimes stems from an uncertainty of the texture of the sand. For many seasonal golfers who play northern courses in the summer, this may be especially true. But a lot of amateurs simply hit too far behind the ball where all of the clubhead speed is absorbed by the extra sand. They think they’re hitting two inches behind the ball, but unfortunately are entering more like four to five inches instead. Many times I’ve coached golfers to try to feel like they are going to hit right behind the ball on a downward blow. Their eyes should pick a spot perhaps even at the back end of the ball. The reality is that even though they’re trying to hit that visual spot, the club really enters the sand one to two inches behind the ball. In practice, make a mark near the ball’s position in the sand and compare where your club really hit relative to that mark. When you can consistently hit two to three inches behind the mark, you’re bunker game will dramatically improve!
